TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING INSPECTED, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL FUEL LEAK AND ALSO FUEL WAS VISIBLE ON THE GROUND. THE FUEL ODOR EMITTED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED BOTH FUEL TANK SENDER UNITS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
A LITTLE LESS THAN 2 YEARS AGO, VEHICLE'S SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM FAILED. IT WAS REPLACED BY MERCEDES DEALER WITH A RE-MANUFACTURED UNIT UNDER THE TEN YEAR WARRANTY FOR THAT BRAKE SYSTEM. THAT SYSTEM IS VERY WELL KNOWN TO BREAK DOWN WITHOUT WARNING WHICH RENDERS CAR A MOVING HAZARD TO OCCUPANTS AND OTHER MOTORISTS. ON MB FORUMS, IT IS STATED BY COMMENTATORS/OWNERS THAT UNIT HAS A LIFE SPAN OF 300,000 ACTUATIONS; BRAKE PUSHES. THIS IS NOT ANYWHERE IN THE MB LITERATURE OR OWNER'S MANUAL. CAR ELECTRONICS HAVE NO METER TO MEASURE OR GAUGE THOSE ACTUATIONS, SO A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE COULD OCCUR WITHOUT ME THE DRIVER BEING PREPARED FOR IT. MERCEDES BENZ NEEDS TO WARRANTY THIS SAFETY RELATED DEFECT FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR. *TR
COUPLE OF MONTHS BACK, I STARTED TO GET THE STRONG GAS SMELL EVERY TIME I FILL UP THE GAS TANK. THE SMELL STAYS THERE FOR 2-3 DAYS. IT'S SO STRONG THAT IT FILLS UP THE WHOLE GARAGE WITH THAT FOUL GAS SMELL. SOMETIME WE CAN EVEN SMELL IT IN OUR LAUNDRY. THE ENTIRE CAR CABIN GETS FULL OF FUEL SMELL AFTER I FILL UP THE TANK AND MY KIDS REFUSE TO SIT IN THE CAR. I ALWAYS FILL UP GAS AT CHEVRON AND IT COMES WITH TECHRON. I WAS THINKING THAT IT'S THE TECHRON SMELL AND SINCE IT USED TO GO AWAY IN A DAY OR TWO, I NEVER WORRIED ABOUT IT MUCH. BUT TODAY WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO FIX SOME OTHER THINGS, HE ALSO NOTICED THE GAS SMELL AND TOLD ME THAT THE LEFT FUEL SENDING UNIT ON MY CAR IS LEAKING AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT. IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH E CLASS CARS AND MB SHOULD RECALL OR REPAIR IT FOR FREE. *TR
MY CAR REMITS STRONG GASOLINE ODOR EACH TIME THAT I REFUEL MY TANK. WHEN I NOTICED THIS SMELL I THOUGHT IT HAD TO DO WITH THE GAS CAP. I TOOK MY CAR IN TO BE INSPECTED BY A LOCAL MERCEDES DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD MY FUEL TANK IS LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MY CAR HAD ABOUT 45000 MILES ON IT WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THE SMELL. A CAR WITH THAT LOW OF MILEAGE SHOULD NOT BE EXPERIENCING A FUEL TANK LEAK. I AM SERIOUS CONCERNED ABOUT MY CAR CATCHING FIRE AND EXPLODING. PLEASE HELP. *TR
AFTER FILLING UP MY CAR AT THE GAS STATION THE INSIDE OF THE CAR SMELLED LIKE GASOLINE SO BADLY I HAD TO DRIVE HOME IN THE RAIN WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. THE SMELL HAS NOT DISSIPATED AND AFTER DOING RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE AND THAT THE NHTSA IS INVESTIGATING MERCEDES FOR THIS POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD. I WANT THIS PROBLEM FIXED BECAUSE I DO NOT FEEL THAT IT IS SAFE TO INHALE GAS FUMES WHILE DRIVING AND THAT A FUEL LEAK IS A DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD FIX. *TR
FOR THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS WE HAVE SMELLED A GAS ODOR IN OUR GARAGE AND ON THE INSIDE OF OUR 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E-320. SINCE AN ODOR OF GAS CREATES THE POSSIBILITY OF A FIRE OR ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN WE SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR 01/22/2013 (TODAY). THE CAR IS CURRENTLY IN FIELDS MOTORCARS - 209 S. LAKE PARKER AVENUE, LAKELAND, FL 33801. WE ARE ALSO HAVING THE ANNUAL SERVICE DONE AT THIS TIME. AFTER INSPECTION THIS MORNING, THE MECHANIC ADVISED OUR SERVICE WRITER THAT THERE IS A LEAK IN THE FUEL TANK. BASED ON THEIR RECOMMENDATION THE FUEL TANK IS BEING REPLACED. ANY FUEL LEAK HAS A POTENTIAL FOR DANGEROUS AND FATAL CONSEQUENCES. THE COST FOR THIS IS APPROXIMATELY $2000.00. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THE FUEL TANK LEAK IS NOT COVERED BY THE FACTORY WARRANTY, NOR IS THERE A GOVERNMENT MANDATED RECALL. THE VEHICLE IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED AND RETURNED TO US TOMORROW, 01/23/2013. IN RESEARCHING THE FUEL TANK LEAK IN OUR VEHICLE, I HAVE FOUND THERE IS AMPLE INFORMATION INDICATING THE FUEL TANK LEAKING ISSUE IS NOT LIMITED TO MY VEHICLE. I ALSO NOTED THAT IN FEBRUARY, 2012 THE NHTSA HAS OPENED UP AN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER. IN ADDITION, THE TEXAS LAW FIRM WIGINGTON, RUMLEY DUNN & RITCH ALONG WITH GEORGIA LAW FIRM CONLEY GRIGGS PARTIN FILED A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ON JULY 18, 2012, AGAINST MERCEDES-BENZ, USA AND ITS GERMAN PARENT CORPORATION DAIMLER ON BEHALF OF THOUSANDS OF CONSUMERS WHO PURCHASED MODEL YEAR 2003-2009 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS VEHICLES. AS A CONSUMER PLACED IN THESE DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES WITHOUT RELIEF BY THE MANUFACTURER, I DESIRE TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH NHTSA TO ASSIST THEM WITH THEIR INVESTIGATION REGARDING THE 2003 ' 2009 MERCEDES BENZ E CLASS FUEL TANK LEAKS. SINCE I GOT THE CAR, STRONG ODOR OF GAS AFTER FILL UP CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON MANY TIMES UPON INSPECTION , MECHANIC FOUND LEAK ON TOP OF FUEL TANK LOCATED UNDER BACK SEAT. *TR
THE FUEL SENDING UNITS EVENTUALLY GET CRACKS WHICH ALLOW FUEL TO LEAK AND POOL THROUGHOUT THE REAR OF THE CAR. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN ADDRESSED ON MY CAR TWICE PREVIOUSLY. MAY 2010 BOTH FUEL SENDING UNITS REPLACED AND FUEL RING ($2200) FEB 2012 BOTH FUEL SENDING UNITS REPLACED AND THE RING AGAIN (ONLY $1953 THIS TIME) I HAVE BEGUN SMELLING FUEL AGAIN SO I KNOW THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED FOR A 3RD TIME. THIS SMELL IS NOTED AT HOME AWAY FROM ANY FUEL SOURCES. I HAVE A 500HP CAR THAT STORES FUEL OUTSIDE OF THE FUEL TANK....ITS LIKE I'M DRIVING AROUND A MOLOTOV COCKTAIL. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM DEVELOPED LEAK, MAKING IT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. LEAKAGE STILL IS OCCURRING, HOWEVER. *TR
SRS SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. *TR
1. FUELING THE VEHICLE- AFTER FUELING THE VEHICLE AND FILLING UP THE TANK, A VERY VERY STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE/FUMES STAYS IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE DAYS OR UNTIL GAS TANK DROPS DOWN TO UNDER HALF A TANK. 2. FUMES ARE SO STRONG, CAUSES OCCUPANTS HEADACHES AND NAUSEA 3. VEHICLE STOPPED ON IDLE- WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, VEHICLE BEGINS TO CHOKE, AS IF ITS ABOUT TO TURN OFF. NEED TO PUT THE CAR ON NEUTRAL AND PRESS THE ACCELERATOR TO STOP THE CAR FROM CHOKING. 4. TURNING- WHEN MAKING TURNS- THE VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY CHOKE AS IF NOT RECEIVING ANY GAS, AND AS IF ITS ABOUT TO TURN OFF. THE POWER STEERING ALSO GOES INACTIVE, LEAVING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE THE TURN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY ON LEFT HAND TURNS AT INTERSECTIONS. I HAVE STOPPED TURNING IN FRONT OF ONCOMING VEHICLES BECAUSE I DO NOT TRUST THE VEHICLES RESPONSE. I CANNOT PREDICT WHEN THESE EPISODES OF NON-RESPONSE TO ACCELERATION WILL OCCUR. *TR
THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE WITH THIS PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE-THE FUEL SENDING UNIT IS LEAKING ONCE AGAIN WITH THE FIRST REPLACEMENT OCCURRING AROUND 75K MILES AND NOW AGAIN AT 123K MILES. I WILL PURSUE SOME CLASSIFICATION WITH THIS MATTER. EVEN THOUGH THE FUEL LEAKAGE IS CONTAINED BENEATH THE REAR SEAT, THE FUMES ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAR. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E-320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, GASOLINE FUMES WERE EMITTED IN AND AROUND THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,300.
AFTER FILLING UP THE TANK, THERE WOULD BE VERY NOTICEABLE GAS VAPORS ESPECIALLY IN ENCLOSED SPACES LIKE THE GARAGE. AT HALF A TANK, THE GAS SMELL GOES AWAY. I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO THE MERCEDES DEALER. THE ADVISOR ASKED ME TO SIT DOWN BEFORE HE DELIVERED THE BAD NEWS. THE GAS TANK HAS WARPED! THIS IS A GARAGE KEPT LUXURY CAR WITH ONLY 42,000 MILES. HOW CAN ITS GAS TANK WARP I ASKED HIM AND HE SAID IT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED TO 8 OTHER CARS IN THE DEALERSHIP. THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING. MERCEDES WILL NOT HELP ANY AND IT WILL COST $2,550 TO CHANGE THE TANK TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. HE SAID HE CAN BRING IT DOWN TO $2,300 AFTER DISCOUNTS. I HOPE MERCEDES BENZ STEPS UP TO THE PLATE TO ADDRESS THIS CRITICAL ISSUE. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55 AMG. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL FUMES WERE EMITTED INSIDE AND AROUND THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND THE FUEL SENDER WAS LEAKING FUEL AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,000. NOTICED A FUEL SMELL IN CABIN OF VEHICLE. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO AUTHORIZED MERCEDES SERVICE CENTER WHO DETERMINED A SEAM IN THE PLASTIC FUEL TANK HAD SPLIT ALLOWING VAPORS INTO THE CABIN. REQUIRED COMPLETE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT. UPDATED 9/19/13 *CN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED, HE NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE FUEL SMELL. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT GASOLINE FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.
STRONG GAS SMELL AFTER FILLING UP TO MAX EACH TIME, BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE OF THE CAR. GAS SMELL ONLY GO AWAY WHEN THE FIRST BAR OF GAS METER IS GONE. NOT SAFE TO PARK THE CAR IN THE GARAGE IT MIGHT CAUGHT ON FIRE. *TR

ASKED MY MERCEDES BENZ MECHANIC, HE CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL TANKS ON THESE CARS AND BENZ REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THEM! COST ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC IS APPROX $2000. *TR
I GET A GAS SMELL OUTSIDE THE CAR ONLY AFTER I FILL UP THE CAR WITH GAS. I DO NOT TAP IT OFF I WAIT UNTIL THE GAS PUMP CUTS OFF. THE GAS SMELL ONLY LAST UNTIL THE 1ST BAR IS GONE ON THE GAUGE. *TR
THE FUEL PUMP AND/OR GASKET IS LEAKING GASOLINE INTO THE AREA UNDER THE BACK SEAT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE FIRST TIME WE NOTICED THE PROBLEM WAS ON NOV 1, 2012, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN. WE CAN NO LONGER FILL THE TANK TO THE FULL POSITION WITHOUT FUEL LEAKING. WE HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL GASKET, BUT IT HAS SINCE LEAKED AGAIN. THIS IS A GREAT SAFETY CONCERN TO ME, AND IT SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY MERCEDES BENZ AT NO COST TO ME. *TR
AFTER COMPLETELY FILLING UP MY FUEL TANK AND DROVE AWAY, I WAS OVERWHELMED BY A STRONG FUEL FUMES. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY RESIDENCE, I FOUND THAT SOME FUEL HAD LEAKED ONTO THE GROUND. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND ALL OVER THE INTERNET THAT OTHER OWNERS OF THIS CLASS OF VEHICLE HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE FUEL SENDING UNITS LOCATED UNDER THE BACK SEAT. WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE SEAT THE PAD HAD FUEL THROUGH TO THE FOAM UNDER THE SEAT. I ALLOWED IT TO AIR OUT, AND CALLED MBZ AS I NOTICED THAT DOT HAD FILED A REPORT IN 04/2012 IN REGARDS TO THIS PROBLEM IN ALL W211 E CLASS MERCEDES IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE RECALL FOR THE E55 2008-020001. I CALLED MBZ AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT NO MATTER HOW DOCUMENTED BY OTHER OWNERS. WE HAVE A TWO YEAR OLD THAT SITS IN A CAR SEAT, THIS IS CLEARLY UNACCEPTABLE IF A KNOWN ISSUE ON BEHALF OF MERCEDES. *TR
THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IN THE VEHICLE AFTER FILLING THE FUEL TANK. I HAVE VERIFIED THAT GASOLINE PUDDLES ON TOP OF FUEL MODULE UNDERNEATH ACCESS COVER ON DRIVER'S SIDE UNDER REAR SEAT. THE CAR ALSO CAUSES A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE OUTSIDE VEHICLE WHEN PARKED IN AN ENCLOSED GARAGE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE CAR CATCHING FIRE OR IT CAUSES A FIRE IN MY HOUSE WHEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE. THE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGES THIS DEFECT, BUT INDICATED THERE IS CURRENTLY NO RECALL TO FIX IT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, SHE COULD SMELL GASOLINE BUT THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A FUEL LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FUEL PLATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS COMMON BUT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
AFTER FILLING UP THE GASOLINE TANK, THE CAR WILL BEGIN TO EMIT A VERY STRONG FUEL ODOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL WHICH WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY 2-3 DAYS UNTIL THE GASOLINE TANK BEGINS TO EMPTY OUT, THEN THE FUEL SMELL WILL GO AWAY UNTIL THE I FILL THE TANK AGAIN. *TR
IN THE ORIGINAL INSTANCE, WHICH HAPPENED ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, EVERY TIME THAT I WOULD DO A COMPLETE FILL UP WITH GAS, THE CAR WOULD SMELL LIKE GAS HORRIBLY IN THE CABIN AS WELL AS OUTSIDE THE CAR. AFTER THAT STARTED HAPPENING, I REFRAINED FROM FILLING THE CAR UP COMPLETELY TO AVOID THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED AND MY CAR HAS ROUGHLY 132000 MILES ON IT. I FILLED UP MY CAR AND NOTICED A HORRIBLE GAS SMELL. I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND NOTICED VERY LARGE PUDDLES OF GAS LITERALLY RUNNING AWAY FROM MY CAR. MY CAR IS LEAKING GAS PROFUSELY ONLY UPON COMPLETE FILL UP. IT IS COMING FROM BENEATH THE CAR UNDER WHAT WOULD BE THE REAR PASSENGER'S SEAT, NEARLY IN LINE WITH THE REAR WHEELS. THIS ITEM WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED ONCE BEFORE BY THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP IN BAKERSFIELD, CA. I PAID FOR THE ENTIRE REPAIR IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY. *TR
REFERENCE NHTSA ACTION# PE12001 FUEL SMELL STRONGEST IN LEFT REAR SEAT AREA. REMOVED SEAT, OPENED COVER OVER FUEL PUMP AND FOUND FUEL SITTING EXPOSED. REMOVED THE SITTING FUEL, AND DID RESEARCH. FOUND MANY SUCH COMPLAINTS THAT MATCH MY SITUATION. IF I DON'T FILL THE FUEL TANK FOR AN EXTENDED TIME, THE FUEL SMELL DISSIPATES, BUT ANY TIME I FILL THE FUEL TANK, THE NOXIOUS FUEL SMELL RETURNS WITHIN HOURS AND IS OBVIOUS AS SOON AS OPENING THE LEFT REAR DOOR. PREVIOUS OWNER HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM AND HAD FUEL PUMP/SENDER REPLACED APR. 2012 COSTING $1000. *TR
STRONG GASOLINE SMELL IN THE CAR, TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS, GAS LEAKING FROM TOP OF GAS TANK WHICH WAS UNDERNEATH THE BACK SEAT. REMEDY WAS TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP. WHICH I DID AT A COST OF $479.63. *TR
STRONG GAS SMELL IN THE CABIN AND IN MY GARAGE AFTER I'D FUEL UP. RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND MANY WITH SIMILAR EXPERIANCE. SENDING UNIT. *JS
CABLE HARNESS AND CONNECTORS IN STEERING COLUMN AIRBAG, POOR CONNECTION FROM USING STEERING WHEEL. ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS DISINTEGRATED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. FRONT THRUST ARMS WITH BUSHINGS HAD TORN BOOTS AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TRANSMISSION DATA LINK CONNECTOR WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
THE FUEL SENSOR FAILED, RESULTING IF FUEL LEAKS. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS AND MERCEDES DENIES THE PROBLEM. AMAZING THAT SUCH A BIG SAFETY ISSUE IS BEING IGNORED AND DENIED BY MERCEDES. IN READING MERCEDES' RESPONSE TO THE INVESTIGATION, IT IS ALMOST A JOKE. THEY CLAIM THAT SINCE THIS ISN'T DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE RECALL, THERE ISN'T AN ISSUE. THAT MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. PERHAPS IT ISN'T RELATED TO THE RECALL, BUT YOU HAVE 50+ COMPLAINTS FOR A CAR WHERE AROUND 1,500 WERE IMPORTED. ESTIMATING 1 IN 10 PEOPLE ACTUALLY COMPLAIN THAT MEANS THAT 1/3 OF THE CARS HAVE THE PROBLEM. IF IT IS 1 IN 20, THAN 2/3RDS HAVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER FILLING UP TANK WITH 93 OCTANE GASOLINE FUEL SMELL PERSIST UNTIL TANK AT 3/4 OF CAPACITY. PROBLEM HAS REPEATED ALL TIMES WHEN TANK FILLED UP. *TR
COMPLAINT # PE12001 I NOTICED OCCASIONAL FUEL SMELL ORIGINALLY 2-3 MONTHS AGO. INITIALLY SMELLS WERE MILD, NOW SMELLS ARE NOXIOUS AND GETTING WORSE. AT MY LAST 10K MILES OIL CHANGE, DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM AND PROGRESSION GETTING WORSE WITH MY MERCEDES CERTIFIED MECHANIC. THE REAR SEAT WAS REMOVED, TO FIND THE UPPER PART OF FUEL CELL UNDER PASSENGER SEAT, WITH DETERIORATION OF UPPER PART OF FUEL CELL PLASTIC. THERE WAS ACTUALLY A GAS "PUDDLE" VISIBLE THAT HAD SEEPED THROUGH THE TOP OF FUEL CELL/SENDING UNIT. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, RISK OF FIRE, AND ALSO CAUSING HEADACHES FROM NOXIOUS SMELL OF GAS !!! WHAT CAN BE MORE DANGEROUS, GAS LEAKING, AND SEEPING INTO THE INTERIOR CABIN OF AN AUTOMOBILE ??? PLEASE INTERVENE WITH THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH A RECALL BEFORE DEATHS OCCUR TO A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I FILLED MY GAS TANK AND THE NEXT DAY I SMELLED GAS BOTH NEAR MY DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL WELL AND INSIDE THE CAR IN THE REAR SEAT AREA. NOTICED A GAS SMELL OUTSIDE OF THE CAR WHEN IT WAS SITTING STILL AND I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND FUEL HAD PUDDLES UP UNDER IT. OPENED THE DOORS AND NOTICED A STRONG FUEL SMELL INSIDE THE CAR. PULLED OUT THE REAR SEATS AND LIFTED UP THE LINER UNDER THE SEATS AND NOTICED FUEL WAS POOLED UP IN THE PASSENGER SIDE BOWL UNDER THE SEAT. THE SEAL THAT IS BOLTED DOWN HAS PUSHED OUT AND IS ALLOWING FUEL TO COME INSIDE THE CAR AND HAS SOAKED INTO THE LINER UNDER THE SEAT. ALSO THE BOLT THAT HOLDS DOWN THE SENDING UNIT WILL NOT SCREW INTO THE HOLE DUE TO THE BOLT HOLE BEING STRIPPED OUT. I AM WANTING THIS TO AID IN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST MERCEDES BENZ IN THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE FUEL SYSTEM LEAKS IN THE 03-06 E SERIES MERCEDES BENZ CARS. *TR
THE FUEL TANK LEAKS FROM THE UPPER VENT WHEN FUEL TANK IS FULL. THERE IS A PLASTIC CONNECTION THAT A HOSE CONNECTS TO THAT IS UNDER THE FUEL LEVEL WHEN FULL. THIS FITTING IS PLASTIC WELDED TO THE TANK AND WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL ON EVERY 211 CHASSIS MERCEDES BENZ EVER MADE. (I WAS AN ASE MASTER MECHANIC THAT SPECIALIZED IN MERCEDES REPAIR FOR OVER 13 YEARS. ) *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHO STATED THAT THE MACPHERSON STRUT SUSPENSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,600.

I PURCHASED A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320 WHICH HAS BEEN GARAGED AND VERY LIGHTLY DRIVEN. (ONLY ON WEEKENDS OR DAYS OFF) AFTER SIX MONTHS AND REFUELING A FEW TIMES I STARTED TO NOTICE AN ODOR OF GAS IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ODOR HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND STRONGER OVER TIME. THE ODOR IS ALSO NOTICEABLE IN THE GARAGE AS WELL AS AROUND THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR. THIS SEEMS LIKE AN INDICATION THAT MORE GAS IS PRESENT AND POSSIBLY LEAKING SOMEWHERE NEAR THE GAS TANK. I AM FEARFUL OF DRIVING IT AS THE CONCERN OVER FIRE IS PRESENT AS MY KIDS RIDE IN THE REAR SEAT. UNITS ARE ACCESSIBLE INSIDE THE CABIN UNDER THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT. 2008 RECALL WAS PERFORMED TO REPLACE FAILED FUEL FILTER MODULE, BUT SAME SEALS ARE FAILING AGAIN. DEALERSHIP AND MB WON'T REPLACE AGAIN SINCE IT WAS REPAIRED UNDER PREVIOUS RECALL. ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE ENTIRE INTERIOR OF THE CAR HAS SMELLED OF FUEL. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF FUEL LEAKING ON THE GROUND DURING THESE EVENTS. THE SMELL WAS MOST EVIDENT AFTER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOTICED WHEN COMING TO STOP. THE SMELL IS STRONGEST INSIDE THE CAR AND IS VERY WORRY SOME. IN JUNE 2012 I WAS EXPERIENCING A STRONG GAS ODOR UPON FILLING MY TANK. OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT FEW MONTHS I VISITED 3 SHOPS TRYING TO FIND THE ISSUE WITH THE ODOR. THE FIRST TWO CLAIMED THERE WAS NO LEAK IN MY TANK AND THEY WERE NOT SURE OF THE PROBLEM. THE LAST SHOP SAID THERE WAS NO LEAK BUT COULD SMELL THE ODOR IN THE VEHICLE. AT THIS POINT IT COST ME, JUST LESS THAN $ 2000., TO FIX ISSUES RELATED TO THE SMELL. # REPLACED CANNISTER VENT CONTROL SOLENOID. # AUX SENDING UNIT # WIRING HARNESS FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR # WIRING HARNESS FOR VENT CONTROL SOLENOID. I WOULD NOT HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM, BUT THE SMELL OF FUEL CAUSED MAJOR CONCERN, ESPECIALLY DRIVING MY CHILDREN AROUND. THIS DID SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I READ A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE FROM THE NHTSA TODAY AND IT WAS TALKING ABOUT A LEAK IN THE TANKS, AS STATED ABOVE, I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE CASE. INITIALLY, AFTER TOPPING OFF THE FUEL TANK AND PARKING THE CAR IN MY GARAGE, I NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR. A CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE BAY, GAS CAP, AND UNDER THE CAR DID NOT REVEAL ANY NOTICEABLE LEAKS SO I SUSPECTED THAT SOME GASOLINE MUST HAVE DRIPPED DOWN THE OVERFLOW TUBE WHEN FILLING. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A DAY THE ODOR BEGAN TO DISSIPATE. THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURRED AFTER FILLING THE TANK AGAIN WHERE I WAS CAREFUL TO ENSURE THAT NO FUEL LEAKED OUTSIDE OF THE FILLER TUBE. OCCASIONALLY, I NOW RECEIVE AN INTERMITTENT EMISSIONS LIGHT ON MY DASH. THE WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT STAY ON LONG ENOUGH TO RECORD A CODE WHEN CHECKED AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE ODOR APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. I NOW NOW FILL IT TO NO MORE THAN 3/4 OF A TANK AND DRIVE IT VERY LITTLE UNTIL I CAN HAVE SOMEONE SUCCESSFULLY LOCATE THE SOURCE OF THIS LEAK. *TR
