MY WIFE AND I WERE PULLING INTO A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY AT 9:30 PM IN THE EVENING, AFTER FINISHING DINNER. ONCE WE HAD APPROACHED HIGHWAY SPEED OF ABOUT 45 TO 50 MPH, OUR FRONT HEAD LIGHTS WENT OUT. IMMEDIATELY MY WIFE PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY WITH OUR LIGHTS OUT, I GOT OUT OF THE AUTO TO INSURE THE LIGHTS HAD INDEED GONE OUT...YES, THEY WERE OUT BLACK AS MIDNIGHT. I ASKED MY WIFE TO SEE IF THEY WOULD COME BACK JUST FOR THE HECK OF TRYING SOMETHING. YES THE LIGHTS DID COME BACK ON AND REMAINED ON FOR THE REMAINDER OF OUR 25 MINUTE DRIVE. AS MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING HOME, SHE INDICATED TO ME THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME, ONLY ONE OF SEVERAL TIMES AS SHE WAS DRIVING, IT MIGHT BE IN THE RAIN DAY OR NIGHT, SHE NEVER KNEW WHEN IT WOULD HAPPEN, HOWEVER AT THIS TIME, THE LIGHTS SEEM TO GO OUT ON A REGULAR BASIC. I'M GOING TO SEE IF THE DEALER CAN REPAIR, WHAT I HAVE BEEN LEAD TO BELIEVE IS THE LCM, AND TO EXPECT A CHARGE UP TO $800.00+, THIS IS A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT WAITING TO OCCUR, AND A EXPENSE THAT I THINK MERC. SHOW ABSORB, WITH ALL OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW, I WOULD HOPE A NATION WIDE RECALL SHOULD TAKE PLACE, BEFORE THE IS LOSS OF LIFE. I DID OWNED A 2005 FREESTAR VAN UNTIL I TRADED IT OFF, WHILE DRIVING THE MOTOR JUST QUIT RUNNING AFTER GETTING THE VAN RESTARTED WITH NO TROUBLE THE TRANNY WOULD NOT GO FORWARD OR IN REVERSE. THE TRANNY LIGHT CAME ON SO I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANNY REBUILT AT MY COST PLUS THE TOLL BILL. FORD SHOULD TAKE OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS A FATAL ACCIDENT AND REIMBURSE OUT OF POCKET MONEY TO ALL THAT FILE A COMPLAINT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND AFTER COOLING OFF, THE HEADLIGHTS BEGAN OPERATING AS NORMAL. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,000. UPDATED 06/14/11
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55-60 MPH, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FAILED AND THE CONTACT HAD TO UTILIZE THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE LOW BEAM MODULAR FAILED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 52,500.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 44 MPH, THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS AND THE ENGINE ROARED LOUDLY. THE VEHICLE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE BUT THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES ABRUPTLY. THE VEHICLE THEN GRADUALLY BEGAN TO DECELERATE TO APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. HE THEN DISENGAGED THE OVERDRIVE FEATURE AND ONCE THE VEHICLE REACHED A SPEED OF 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE OPERATED AS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 8,770.
WHILE TRAVELING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT NIGHT WITH MY 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING MY HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF AND I WAS SCARRED TO DEATH,I"M A 65 YEAR OLD LADY AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO SCARED!I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND AFTER 5 MINS THEY COME BACK ON I MAKE IT HOME BUT IN A 15 MILE TIME THEY TURNED OFF EVERY COUPLE OF MINUTES. *TR

2005 MERC., HEAD LIGHTS GO OFF OR DON'T COME ON FOR A MILE OR TWO. SWITCH ON MANUAL OR AUTO. DEALER HAD CAR FOR TWO DAYS, SAID ALL CHECKED OK. *TR
TIRES FROM WALMART STORE#1541, WITH LESS THEN 10,000, ROTATED & BALANCED,AT 45-55 MPH TIRES WOBBLE & SHAKE. THEY REBALANCED THEM TODAY X2 BUT STILL NOT CORRECT AT 50-60 MPH THEY STILL WOBBLE. I JUST COULDN'T GO BACK A THIRD TIME. THE STORE MANAGER JUST SAID FIX THEM TO HIS STAFF AND WALKED AWAY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS AND TAILLIGHTS FAILED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON A INTERMITTENT BASIS. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THAT FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECT IN THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 61,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON I-81 AT NIGHT, I OPERATED MY LEFT TURN SIGNAL WHILE ACCELERATING TO ABOUT 75 MPH TO PASS A TRUCK AND MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. I ACCIDENTLY FORCED THE HIGH BEAM ON BY FLIPPING THE TURN/HIGH BEAM LEVER AND I HELD THE LEVER IN THAT POSITION UNTIL I COULD RETURN TO THE RIGHT LANE BEHIND THE TRUCK AND STOP ON THE ROADSIDE. TO SAY I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE IS NOT SIMPLY DRAMA. THE WORST PART WAS NOT KNOWING IF MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE WORKING. WHILE OFF THE ROAD, I COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. I PUT ON THE LOW BEAM AND PROCEEDED ON I-81. AFTER SOME MILES, I AGAIN TRIED THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL AND AGAIN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT. THIS TIME I WAS READY, AND USED THE HIGH BEAM LEVER TO GET TO THE ROADSIDE. AGAIN I COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. I EXITED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, RUNNING ON LOW BEAM, AND THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AGAIN ON THE RAMP WHEN I OPERATED THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL. I CONTINUED TO OCALA BY WAY OF ATLANTA, RUNNING IN DAYLIGHT ONLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO OCALA FORD AS SOON AS I ARRIVED IN OCALA. THE DEALER HAD THE CAR SEVERAL DAYS AND FINALLY DUPLICATED THE FAILURE. THEY REPLACED A MODULE AT THE COST OF $786.00 AND SAID THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. NO REPAIR WAS DONE TO THE TURN SIGNAL. I GOT THE MODULE FROM THE DEALER AND SENT IT TO NHTSA FOR TESTING TO DETERMINE IF IT ACTUALLY WAS DEFECTIVE. IF NOT, THEN MY CAR PRESENTS A RISK TO EVERYONE SHARING THE HIGHWAY WITH ME AT NIGHT, BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WOULD STILL BE THERE. IN MY OPINION, SUDDEN AND CATASTROPHIC FAILURE SUCH AS THIS PRESENTS FATAL RISK TO ANYONE INVOLVED IN A CRASH, INCLUDING THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THIS FAILURE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH REASONABLE WEAR AND TEAR, IT IS A DESIGN/MANUFACTURING DEFECT, WORSENED BY A FAILURE BY FORD TO PROVIDE A DIAGNOSTIC PROGRAM. SINCE THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT, PEOPLE MAY HAVE ALREADY DIED AND NO TRACE OF THE FAILURE WOULD BE FOUND BY EXAMINING THE WRECK. UPDATED 01/19/11/*JB UPDATED 01/20/11 *BF
I OWN A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS, WHILE DRIVING, THE HEADLIGHTS WILL GO OUT WITHOUT WARNING. ALL OTHER OUTSIDE LIGHTS STAY ON AND PASSING LIGHTS WORK. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND FOUND ALL SOURCES SAY IT IS A FAILED LCM, LIGHT CONTROL MODULE. I HAVE NOT FOUND A SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT HAVE FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS. OF ALL THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, FAILED HEADLIGHTS IS NUMBER ONE. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO PAY TO HAVE A SAFETY ISSUE LIKE THIS REPAIRED. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD AND MERCURY DEALERS CONCERNING THIS, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM KEEPS HAPPENING MORE OFTEN AND MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE THE CAR AT NIGHT. YOU CAN USE THE PASSING LIGHTS, BUT THAT IS VERY DANGEROUS, BECAUSE IT BLINDS OTHER DRIVERS. *TR

WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO USE THE HAZARD LIGHTS. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED BUT WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 59,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS SHUT ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY; HOWEVER, THE HIGH BEAMS CONTINUE TO FUNCTION. THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WAS REPLACED, BUT THAT DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT HEADLIGHT MODULE CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY ISSUE. TL- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT AFTER TRAVELING 25 MILES OR MORE, THE HEADLAMPS WOULD FAIL, CAUSING REDUCED VISIBILITY FORCING THE USE OF HIGH BEAMS. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED WHO WAS UNAWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE LIGHT SWITCH; HOWEVER SHE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER NOR HAD THE VEHICLE BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000.
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE LCM HAS, WITHOUT WARNING, FAILED. THE FIRST TIME, WHILE DRIVING ALONG US1 AFTER DARK, ALL LIGHTS - HEADLIGHTS, TAIL LIGHTS, AND DASHBOARD LIGHT - WENT OFF!! THERE WERE NO STREET LIGHTS AND CARS COULD NOT SEE US FROM BEHIND AND WE COULD NOT SEE WHERE WE WERE GOING! WE WERE TERRIFIED. OUR LIVES WERE AT STAKE AS WE ANXIOUSLY AND EXTREMELY SLOWLY MADE OUR WAY HOME. THE REPAIR WAS OUTRAGEOUSLY COSTLY. AND, OF COURSE, WE WERE RESTRICTED TO DRIVING ONLY IN SUNNY DAYLIGHT HOURS AS LIGHTS ARE REQUIRED WHEN RAINING. NOW, THIS HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH THE PART HAS BEEN ORDERED FOR OVER 10 DAYS, THERE IS NO WORD AS TO WHEN IT WILL BE AVAILABLE AND WE ARE ABOUT TO TAKE A FOUR-DAY TRIP! WE HAVE CONTACTED THE FORD MOTOR CO. ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, BOTH BY PHONE AND BY EMAIL, AND ALL THEY CAN SAY IS THAT IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. EXCUSE ME! THIS IS A LIFE AND DEATH ISSUE!!! WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO A FAULTY LCM! IN ALL OUR YEARS WE HAVE NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN WITH ANY OTHER CAR. WE HAVE READ IN SEVERAL BLOGS THAT THERE ARE DEFECTIVE MODULES BEING USED - YES, FROM FORD MOTOR CO.! HOOD WAS OPEN WHILE CHECKING OIL ETC. IT SUDDENLY FELL DOWN ON ME WITHOUT WARNING, HAVE CUT ON MY RIGHT EYEBROW IT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY SERIOUS IF I WAS IN ANOTHER POSITION. WAS IN MY GARAGE AND NO WIND WAS CAUSE PROBABLY WEAK STRUTS. HAVE NOT YET CHECK IT OUT. *TR

IN ORDER TO KEEP THE LIGHTS ON HE HAD TO HOLD CONTINUE HOLDING THE HIGH BEAM SWITCH, UNTIL HE DROVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED HIM THAT THE FAILURE MAY BE CAUSED BY THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND ADVISED HIM THAT THEY WOULD CONFIRM WHETHER OR NOT THERE WERE ANY BULLETINS REGARDING THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 75,000. 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 85,000 MILES, HEADLIGHTS GO OUT AT ANY SPEED WHEN HITTING A BUMP OR POT HOLE. NO HIGH BEAM OR LOW BEAMS BUT FLASH TO PASS WILL LIGHT BOTH HIGH AND LOW IF TURN SIGNAL ARM IS HELD BACK. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE RAOD AT 70 MPH AND THE HEADLIGHTS BLINKED OFF, ALL THE LITES WENT OFF, HEADLITES, TAILITES, ALL. I TURNED THE HEADLITE SWITCH ON AND OFF AND NOTHING. I SLOWED AND DOWN AND BEGAN TO PULL OF THE INTERSTATE AND THE LITES BLINKED BACK ON AGAIN. THIS OCCURRED 3 MORE TIMES ON THE WAY INTO WORK. I NOTIFIED FORD, NO ASSISTANCE AND THE DEALER REPLACED THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE, STATED THEY HAD SEEN A FEW OF THEM. I SAW A CHRYSLER HAD A PROBLEM AND THOUGHT I SHOULD REPORT MINE. I NOTIFIED FORD THIS WAS A SAFETY ITEM AND THEY SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL. *TT
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH AT NIGHT, BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE UNIT. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE LIGHTS WERE REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 58,000. UPDATED 03/16/11
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT FAILED AND THE CONTACT HAD TO DRIVE USING THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS. THE LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACED THE RELAY SWITCH AND THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH, BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED AND THE CONTACT COULD ONLY USE THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED, WHICH LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE HEADLIGHT MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,000.
HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF WITHOUT WARNING, DRIVING ON DARK STREETS AT NIGHT COULD BE DANGEROUS. AFTER A SEARCH FOUND THOUSANDS OF SAME COMPLAINTS, LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE SEEMS TO BE THE PROBLEM. THE PART IS VERY EXPENSIVE, NOT COUNTING LABOR. *TR

WE HAVE A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS WITH AUTOMATIC HEADLAMPS. WHILE DRIVING ON SEPT 18,2010 IN THE EVENING I NOTICED DASH LIGHT WERE ON BUT IT DID NOT APPEAR TO HAVE HEADLAMPS ON. I TRIED MANUAL SWITCHING AND STILL NO HEADLIGHTS. I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE HOME WHEN I FOUND OUT HIGH BEAMS WORKED. 1ST TRIP TO DEALER WAS POSSIBLE LOOSE PIN. LOST HEADLIGHTS ON THE WAY HOME FROM DEALER. BROUGHT CAR BACK AND HEADLIGHTS STARTED WORKING AGAIN. DEALER JUST CALLED AND SAID HEADLIGHT MODULE WAS BAD AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. ONE WEEK WAIT BECAUSE DEALER SAID IT IS UNUSUAL. CHECKED ON LINE AND FOUND A COUPLE OF HUNDRED COMPLAINTS OF SAME EXACT PROBLEM AND REMEDY. $750.00 PLUS. COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS LATER IN EVENING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH. I AM REQUESTING OLD PART FROM DEALER THANK YOU *TR
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

THERE ARE SOME THINGS IN A CAR THAT SHOULD JUST WORK RIGHT FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR IF NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO THEM'AND HEADLIGHTS THAT COME ON IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS. I HAVE A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS (I HAVE OWNED LINCOLN MERCURY PRODUCTS FOR YEARS) AND WHILE DRIVING BACK FROM MY DAUGHTER'S HOUSE ONE NIGHT, MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OFF. I WAS TRAVELING 50 MPH AND THERE WERE NO LIGHTS ON THE ROAD. MY INTERIOR LIGHTS WERE STILL ON, BUT I SUDDENLY COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME AND I PULLED OVER (AND FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS A SHOULDER ON THAT ROAD). I FLIPPED THE LIGHT SWITCH BACK AND FORTH A FEW TIMES AND THEY CAME BACK ON. I FINISHED THE DRIVE HOME, WONDERING WHAT IN THE WORLD CAUSED THAT. A WEEK LATER, I WAS DRIVING HOME ON I-10 AT 9:00 P.M. WHEN SUDDENLY, THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AGAIN. THIS TIME I WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH AND WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A STEADY STREAM OF TRAFFIC. I'M ALIVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE REST OF THE TRIP HOME. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE AND WAS SURE THAT MOST OF THE CARS IN THAT 'PACK' HAD SEEN ME BEFORE THE LIGHTS WENT OFF. I LET EVERYONE PASS ME AS I SLOWED DOWN AND QUICKLY GOT INTO THE RIGHT LANE WHEN THERE WAS A BREAK IN TRAFFIC. I GOT ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD GOING ABOUT 50 MPH NOW AND SLOWED DOWN AFTER I GOT ON THE SHOULDER, SO I WOULDN'T BE HIT. THIS TIME I SAT THERE COUNTING MY BLESSINGS FOR A WHILE, THEN FLICKED THE SWITCH A FEW MORE TIMES AND THEY CAME BACK ON. I GOT BACK OUT ON THE ROAD AND ALMOST MADE IT TO MY EXIT BEFORE IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME I WAS GOING SLOWER SO I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER. I PUT ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND MADE IT TO MY EXIT THEN CAUTIOUSLY HOME. THE HEADLIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND WENT OFF THREE TIMES DURING THE REST OF THE RIDE HOME. MY POINT IN WRITING IS TO ASK FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO RECONSIDER ITS OPINION THAT THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE FIXED BY AN OFFICIAL RECALL. ACCORDING TO FORD IT IS THE AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT CONTROLLER AND IT COST 900 TO REPAIR. I ALMOST CRASHED DURING A RAIN STORM WHEN THE LIGHTS SUDDENLY WENT OFF AND UNABLE TO GET THEM TO COME BACK ON. DRIVING WITH HIGH BEAMS ON IS DANGEROUS AND HAVING TO HOLD THE FLASH LEVER WHILE DRIVING CAUSES A SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND REPAIRED; YET, THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 87,500.

HAD THERE BEEN A CAR IN FRONT OF ME OR A PEDESTRIAN CROSSING I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL SHOP ON THE SAME DAY, THEY DIAGNOSED IT AND COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. ON THE 19TH WE TOOK THE CAR TO A LINCOLN MERCURY DEALER WHO ALSO DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THEY HAD NO SUGGESTIONS FOR SOLVING THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION. ABOUT 10 DAYS AGO I HAD THE SAME THING OCCUR, HOWEVER, IT WAS NO MORE THEN 1 OR 2 SECONDS AND I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY.
