THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO ACTIVATE THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS BY HOLDING THE TURN SIGNAL BAR. THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT CONTROL MODULE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,800.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO HAVE THE HEADLIGHTS INSPECTED AND THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE HEADLIGHT SENSOR MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
I WAS DRIVING HOME AND MY HEADLIGHTS CUT OFF WITH NO WARNING AT NIGHT, THEY CAME ON AGAIN FOR A MIN., BUT CUT OFF THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES SINCE. I HAVE TO HOLD MY BRIGHT SWITCH DOWN FOR A 30 MIN DRIVE HOME. I HAVE HAD A FUSES CHECKED, AFTER LOOKING ON LINE IT LOOKS LIKE SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE, THIS IS SCARY, CONSIDERING I HAVE 3 CHILDREN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS INSTRUMENT PANEL SHOWED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED, THE LIGHTS WERE NOT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER HOWEVER THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE DEALER DID SUGGEST THAT THE MODULE WAS FAULTY AND THAT THE CONTACT COULD REACH UNDER THE DASHBOARD AND TAP IT, AND THE LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE. THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL THE REMEDY WAS REASONABLE OR SAFE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUED HOWEVER, OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE PART WAS NOT IN STOCK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000. I WAS DRIVING AROUND 11 PM ON APRIL 15, 2012 WHEN HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED. BLINDLY SWERVED OFF ROAD ONTO GRASS. SHUT CAR OFF AND RESTARTED. HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO ENGAGE. DROVE REMAINING DURATION OF TRIP WITH HIGH BEAMS ENGAGED. THIS IS THE THIRD OCCURRENCE IN TWO WEEKS. THE FIRST TWO OCCURRENCES WERE AT AROUND 15 MILES PER HOUR. THE THIRD INSTANCE ALMOST RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. *JS
HEADLIGHTS WILL ACTIVATE AND DEACTIVATE WITHOUT CONTROLS BEING MANIPULATED. WHEN THEY ARE ACTIVE, THEY ONLY STAY ON BRIEFLY. COMMON PROBLEM AMONGST THAT YEAR AND MODEL AFTER PERFORMING AN ONLINE SEARCH FOR THE ISSUE AND POSSIBLE RECALL ACTION BY MERCURY/FORD MOTORS. *JS
HEADLIGHT FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. *TR
AT APPROXIMATELY 11:00 PM ON 3/24/12, I SUDDENLY LOST MY HEADLIGHTS AS I WAS DRIVING SOUTH THROUGH NORTH CAROLINA ON INTERSTATE-95. I PULLED INTO A REST AREA, AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES, MY HEADLIGHTS CAME BACK ON WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR. I DROVE FOR A FEW MORE HOURS WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. AT APPROXIMATELY 8:00 PM ON 3/25/12, I LOST MY HEADLIGHTS AGAIN WHILE DRIVING THROUGH FLORIDA. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ONLY A FEW MILES AWAY FROM MY MOTEL WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE NEXT MORNING, 3/26/12, I TOOK MY CAR TO AN INDEPENDENTLY-OWNED GARAGE, AND THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A DEFECTIVE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE. HE WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN A NEW MODULE FROM A NEARBY FORD DEALERSHIP AND SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL THE MODULE INTO MY CAR. THERE IS NO QUESTION THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE BECAUSE THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO RESTORE MY HEADLIGHTS BY FIRST TRYING TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH OR THE HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH. WHAT'S MORE, HE WAS UNABLE TO GET THE DEFECTIVE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE TO RESPOND TO AN EXTERNAL COMPUTER COMMAND. THE REPAIR COST $816.77. I WAS CONCERNED THAT I SUDDENLY LOST MY HEADLIGHTS WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, BUT EVEN MORE CONCERNED WHEN I HEARD A PARTS SPECIALIST AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT PROVIDED MY NEW REPLACEMENT LIGHT CONTROL MODULE CLAIM HIS DEALERSHIP WAS REPLACING AN AVERAGE OF THREE OF THESE MODULES WEEKLY ON FORD CROWN VICTORIA PATROL CARS BEING DRIVEN BY LOCAL POLICE. THE IDEA OF POLICEMAN LOSING THEIR HEADLIGHTS DURING HIGH SPEED PURSUITS AT NIGHT MADE ME VERY CONCERNED. MY CONCERN WAS HEIGHTENED WHEN I STARTED INVESTIGATING THE MATTER ON THE INTERNET AND READ MANY STORIES SIMILAR TO MINE. A NUMBER OF THESE STORIES SUGGESTED THAT FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THESE DEFECTIVE LIGHT CONTROL MODULES FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND THAT A RECALL HAS LONG BEEN IN ORDER. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, HE WAS PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER AND INFORMED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH INDICATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE HEADLIGHT MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
DURING EARLY MORNING TRAVEL, BOTH HEADLIGHTS STOPPED WORKING AT THE SAME TIME. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE HEADLIGHTS WORKED FINE FOR A WHILE, THEN SUDDENLY STOP WORKING AS YOU DRIVE. FORD DIAGNOSED TO BE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE AND TO REPAIR IS ALMOST A THOUSAND DOLLARS. THIS MANUFACTURERS DEFECT IS COMMON FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL VEHICLE AND IS VERY DANGEROUS!! HEADLIGHTS ARE A SAFETY NECESSITY AND THIS MANUFACTURER DEFECT IS ABOVE AND BEYOND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHERE THE DEALER REPLACED THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH. THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A SECOND DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE MODULE WHICH CONTROLLED THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING WAS DEFECTIVE. THE DEALER DID NOT REPLACE THE MODULE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,000.
DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPLAINT: LCM KNOWN DEFECT: BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED, IN BOTH DIM AND HIGH-BEAM POSITIONS. THEY WILL NOT COME ON IN EITHER THE AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL DASHBOARD SWITCH POSITIONS. (THE BULBS ARE STILL GOOD.) THE PARKING LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS, TAIL LIGHTS, AND BRAKE LIGHTS CONTINUED TO FUNCTION. THIS HAPPENED AT NIGHT. IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS THAT THIS FAILURE WILL *ALWAYS* OCCUR AT NIGHT, OR DURING STORMY WEATHER, THREATENING SAFETY, BECAUSE HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT NORMALLY USED DURING THE DAYTIME. LATER TESTING REVEALED THE PROBLEM TO BE INTERMITTENT. AT ONE POINT, THE AUTOMATIC DASHBOARD SWITCH POSITION WORKED FOR BOTH DIM AND HIGH-BEAMS, BUT THE MANUAL SWITCH POSITION DID NOT WORK. THE NEXT MORNING, BOTH THE AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL POSITIONS WORKED. WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED, NEITHER POSITION WOULD WORK. THIS INTERMITTENT PROBLEM IS CONSISTENT WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AND REPORTS FOR THE 2003-2005 MODEL YEARS, AND THE PROBLEM IS THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE. THIS MODULE IS SO UNRELIABLE THAT IT HAS BEEN NAMED THE "LIGHTS OUT MODULE" ON THE INTERNET. HE COULD RUN INTO A PARKED CAR, HIT A PEDESTRIAN, HIT A BICYCLIST, HIT A TREE OR OTHER OBSTRUCTION, ETC. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION! *TR

IT WAS APPROX. 2:30AM [NIGHT TIME] AND I WAS DRIVING ON A RURAL STATE HIGHWAY @ 65MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET. THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS SUDDELY WENT OUT. THE SWITCH WAS SET TO AUTOMATIC ON / OFF. VISIBILITY INSTANTLY BECAME ZERO IN THE PITCH BLACK.. AS I WAS 20 MILES OUTSIDE OF TOWN ON A STATE HIGHWAY IN AN UNPOPULATED AREA WITH NO LIGHTING.. NOT EVEN MOON LIGHT. I SLAMMED ON MY BREAKS RUNNING OFF THE ROADWAY INTO THE DRAINAGE DITCH.. TAKING OVER 100 FEET TO STOP. AFTER GAINING MY COMPOSURE, I NOTICED THAT MY DASHLIGHTS WERE STILL WORKING ALONG WITH MY YELLOW WARNING LIGHTS. I TRIED THE HEADLIGHTS SWITCH BY CHANGING IT FROM OFF, TO FULL ON- TO AUTO... WITH NO SUCCESS AT FIRST. BUT AFTER 3-4 MINUTES THE LIGHTS SUDDENLY CAME BACK ON AND WORKED IN BOTH THE AUTO & IN THE SWITCHED 'ON' POSITIONS FOR 20-30 SECONDS AND THEN SHUT OFF. SO I KNEW THE PROBLEM WASN'T WITH A BLOWN FUSE. THIS CONTINUED TO BE THE CYCLE.. THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD COME ON FOR 20-30 SECONDS AND THEN SHUT OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE WORKING AGAIN. BY PULLING THE TURN CONTROL / HIGH BEAM LEVER TOWARD ME, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE PASSING LIGHT SETTING OF MY HEADLIGHTS TO WORK AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE BACK HOME... BUT THIS CREATED A DANGER TO VEHICLES I MET.. AS IT BLINDED THEM. I COULDN'T TURN OFF THE BRIGHT PASSING BEAM WITHOUT GOING DARK ON THE ROADWAY. NEXT MORNING I CHECKED THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND DISCOVERED THAT 1000'S OF OTHER MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM.. THAT MERCURY HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS... WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS PRIOR TO 2005. NOT ONLY HAS MERCURY KNOWINGLY ENDANGERED MY AND THE OTHER OWNERS [AND THEIR FAIMLIES] LIVES.. MERCURY HAS CREATED A VERY PROFITABLE INCOME CHARGING ITS CUSTOMERS CLOSE TO $700 FOR A REPAIR THAT THEY KNOW IS THE RESULT OF A FAULTY FACTORY INSTALLED HEADLIGHT CONTROL MODULE. THIS RATES A RECALL! *TT
AS I WAS DRIVING THE HEADLIGHTS WENT COMPLETELY OFF, SWITCHED TO MANUAL, WORKED FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN WENT OFF AGAIN. TRIED TURNING CAR OFF AND BACK ON, NO LIGHTS, HAD TO HOLD DIMMER SWITCH FORWARD TO GET LIGHTS. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE THE FIRST ONE. NOW NOT EVEN HOLDING THE DIMMER SWITCH FORWARD ALWAYS WORKS. TODAY WE WERE STOPPED BECAUSE TAIL LIGHTS WERE OUT (DRIVER WAS HOLDING DIMMER SWITCH FORWARD). TAIL LIGHTS ALSO FLICKER AT TIMES WHEN HEADLIGHT GOES OUT AND CONTROL PANEL FLICKERS TOO. WE HAVE GONE TO LOCAL INDEPENDENT REPAIR SERVICE AND ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY GETTING CONTROL MODULE DUE TO LARGE BACK ORDER. SO WHAT ARE WE TO DO IN THE MEANTIME? THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO THOSE IN THE CAR AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. I UNDERSTAND RECALLS ARE WHEN THERE IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND THIS DEFINITELY QUALIFIES! SO WE NOW OWN A CAR THAT WE CAN'T DRIVE WHENEVER HEADLIGHTS ARE NEEDED, WHICH IS VERY LIMITING. SO FAR I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET HOLD OF FORD DIRECTLY TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS. WE ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNERS, BUT THAT SHOULD NOT MATTER ON SUCH A SERIOUS ISSUE! THIS COMPLAINT IS ABOUT A 2005 GRAND MARQUIS. *TR
UPON STARTING UP 2005 MERCURY MARQUIS (~24000 MILES) AND PLACING CAR INTO DRIVE, CAR ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND CRASHED INTO A GAS STATION PUMP. THE CAR ACCELERATOR MALFUNCTIONED AND WAS IN A "JAMMED STATE". THE DRIVER IMMEDIATELY PUT RIGHT FOOT THEN BOTH FEET ON BRAKE TRYING TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THE CAR WOULD NOT SLOW MUCH LESS STOP. DRIVER SUFFERED VERY SERIOUS EYE INJURY AND CURRENTLY HAS NO SIGHT IN INJURED LEFT EYE. THERE IS THE RISK OF LOSING LEFT EYE. PASSENGER SUFFERED FRACTURED STERNUM AND OTHER BRUISING. BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER ARE TRAUMATIZED FROM THIS CAR ACCELERATOR MALFUNCTION. *TR
HEADLIGHTS FAIL TO COME ON OR SUDDENLY SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. OTHER LIGHTS, INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR FUNCTION. HEADLIGHTS WILL BURN ONLY IF THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER IS HELD BACK. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS MALFUNCTION THAT IS BEING EXPERIENCED BY MANY FORD CROWN VICTORIA AND MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS OWNERS, MODEL YEARS 2004-2005. DEALERS WILL REPLACE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE FOR $500 WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. I KNOW OF SEVERAL FORD OWNERS WITH THE SAME IDENTICAL PROBLEM. MANY WRECKING YARDS ARE SOLD OUT OF THE SALVAGED LCMS (DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM ANYWAY.) *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 79,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000.
THE LIGHTS WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING IN THE CITY AT NIGHT. I PULLED OVER AND PLAYED WITH THE LIGHT SWITCH UNTIL THEY CAME BACK ON. I HAD TROUBLE WITH THE LIGHTS SEVERAL TIMES, BEFORE I REPLACED THE LIGHT SWITCH ON 01/04/12. ON A TRIP TO THE STORE TONIGHT, THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AGAIN. AFTER CHECKING ON THE INTERNET, IT SEEMS IT MUST BE THE LCM MODULE, AT A COST OF $700, TO $900. DOLLARS. IT SEEMS THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH FORD MOTOR CO, VEHICLES. *TR

WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT ON NJ HIGHWAY 29 IN TRENTON THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OFF. THEY WOULD NOT TURN ON EXCEPT WHEN I HELD THE "BRIGHTS" LEVER UP. AT SOME POINT THEY WOULD COME BACK ON, BUT THEN THEY WOULD GO OFF AGAIN. I WAS AT SPEED AND IN TRAFFIC ON A LIGHTED ROADWAY. TOOK CAR TO FORD DEALER BUT DID NOT GET REPAIRED BECAUSE COST IS EXORBITANT (OVER $800). THE PROBLEMS CONTINUES SO I DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR AT NIGHT. THIS APPARENTLY HAPPENS FREQUENTLY TO THIS MAKE/MODEL/YEAR BUT MANUFACTURER DOES NOT SEE IT AS A PROBLEM (I CORRESPONDED WITH THEM ON THIS MATTER). BEFORE I REALIZED THE SEVERITY I CONTINUED DRIVING AND THE LIGHTS CUT OUT ON A POORLY LIGHTED CITY STREET AS I WAS TURNING THE CORNER AND I ALMOST HIT A PEDESTRIAN I COULD NOT SEE. *TR
LET ME START BY SAYING THIS IS A SAFETY RISK THAT COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF LIFE. WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. INSTRUMENT ILLUMINATION STAYED ON. HEADLIGHT SWITCH WAS CYCLED AND THE HEADLIGHTS CAM BACK ON. THEY TURNED OFF MINUTES LATER. AFTER PULLING OVER AND CYCLING THE BRIGHT LIGHTS AND THE HEADLAMP SWITCH, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT DRIVING WITH THE SIGNAL LIGHT PULLED BACK INTO BRIGHT-FLASH POSITION WAS THE ONLY WAY TO DRIVE. THIS WAS AFTER SEVERAL PULL-OFF-THE-ROAD EVENTS. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC, WHO DETERMINED THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH TO BE BAD. $300 AFTERWARDS, THE INTERMITTENT SYMPTOMS WENT AWAY. HOWEVER, THE HEADLIGHTS NEVER ILLUMINATED. FROM 12/11 THROUGH 5/12, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN ONLY DURING THE DAY -- OCCASIONALLY AT NIGHT, BUT WITH THE TURN SIGNAL PULLED BACK TO HIGHBEAM FLASH. AFTER REVIEWING MANY INTERNET POSTS, I DISCOVERED THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE (LCM) WAS THE SUSPECT COMPONENT. THE DEALERSHIP PRICE FOR THIS COMPONENT, AS OF 5/12, IS $521.67. I REMOVED THE LCM AND OPENED IT TO INSPECT. AFTER NOTHING WAS FOUND (BURNED COMPONENTS, COLD SOLDER JOINTS, ETC.), I REASSEMBLED AND REINSTALLED IT. AFTER AN OPERATIONAL CHECK TO SEE IF RESEATING THE CONNECTORS FIX IT, I DISCOVERED THE HEADLIGHT SYSTEM FULLY FUNCTIONAL. WE'LL SEE IF THE PROBLEM REPEATS ITSELF. THIS PROBLEM WAS REPORTED AN MANY INTERNET REPAIR POSTS FOR 2003-2005 FORD CROWN VICS AND GRAND MARQUIS. *TR

IN OCTOBER 2011, I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT WHEN MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OFF. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM. I GOT OUT AND TOOK A WALK AROUND THE CAR AND ALL THE LIGHTS WERE WORKING EXCEPT THE HEADLIGHTS. I TURNED THE LIGHTS SWITCH OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. THE PROBLEM WORSENED AND I FOUND THAT I COULD HOLD THE "MOMENTARY" HIGH BEAM SWITCH ON AND THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD WORK -- AS LONG AS I HELD THE SWITCH IN THE HIGH BEAM POSITION. THE SITUATION WORSENED, AND NOW THE HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT COME ON FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. THE PROBLEM HAS ESCALATED FROM OCTOBER 2011 UNTIL LATE MAY 2012. IF I NEED TO DRIVE THE CAR AT NIGHT, I MUST HOLD THE "MOMENTARY" HIGH BEAM SWITCH WHILE I DRIVE. ONCE IN A WHILE YOU CAN SEE THE HEADLIGHTS COME ON BECAUSE THE LIGHTS GET EXTREMELY BRIGHT. THEN I CAN RELEASE THE "MOMENTARY" HIGH BEAM SWITCH. THE LIGHTS WILL ONLY STAY ON FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS AND THEN GO BACK OFF. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT MANY MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS AND FORD CROWN VICTORIA'S AROUND THE MODEL YEAR OF MY CAR HAVE THIS PROBLEM. HE HAS TRACED THE PROBLEM TO SOMETHING CALLED THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS AN ENGINEERING PROBLEM. FORD WANTS $600.00 JUST FOR THE PART. THE HEADLIGHTS DO NOT TURN ON AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY, DAY OR DARK AT NIGHT, UNLESS YOU USE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. HE LIGHTS WILL NOT TURN ON BY THE CONTROL LEVER. THE LIGHTS WILL ONLY WORK BY PULLING AND HOLDING THE LIGHT CONTROL LEVER TOWARDS THE DRIVER THEREBY TURNING THE BRIGHT LIGHTS ON. WHILE DRIVING MY CAR AT IN THE VERY EARLY MORNING BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED ON A CURVY DOWNHILL ROAD. I SWITCHED THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH FROM THE AUTOMATIC POSITION TO THE MANUAL "ON" POSITION, BUT THE HEADLIGHTS DID NOT COME BACK ON. I PUSHED THE HIGH BEAM SWITCH FORWARD TO THE HIGH BEAM POSITION BUT THIS FAILED TO TURN ON THE HIGH BEAMS. I PULLED THE HIGH BEAM SWITCH BACK TO THE HIGH BEAM "FLASH" POSITION WHICH DID ILLUMINATE THE HIGH BEAMS. I HELD THE SWITCH BACK IN THIS POSITION (TO THE DISPLEASURE OF APPROACHING DRIVERS) UNTIL I FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. I CYCLED THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH NUMEROUS TIMES WITH NO EFFECT. THE LIGHT DID FINALLY COME BACK ON THEIR OWN FOR A SHORT TIME, BUT THEM WENT OFF AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES UNIT THEY FINALLY DID SOME BACK ON FOR A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME. THE HEADLIGHTS WERE CHECKED BY THE FORD DEALER ON AUGUST 5, 2011. TESTS REVEALED NO CAUSE BUT THE MECHANIC SUSPECTED THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE. HE ADVISED FURTHER DRIVING, WHICH I DID THAT SAME EVENING ONLY TO EXPERIENCE REPEATED HEADLIGHT FAILURE WHEN USING EITHER TURN SIGNAL OR ACTIVATING THE HIGH BEAMS. THEN I DISCOVERED A NUMBER OF INTERNET POSTINGS IN WHICH DRIVERS EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH GRAND MARQUIS' OR FORD CROWN VICTORIAS MADE IN THE 2000'S. THEN I FOUND A WEBSITE WHICH STATED THAT THE ORIGINAL LIGHT CONTROL MODULE HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM INVOLVING A BAD CIRCUIT THAT IS THE DEFINITIVE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE LOCAL FORD DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEM (EVEN CITING SEVERAL CROWN VICTORIA POLICE INTERCEPTORS THAT REQUIRED LCM REPLACEMENT), BUT BECAUSE FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL, THEY WANTED OVER $1,000 FOR DIAGNOSIS, PART, AND LABOR. A WEBSITE ALSO NOTED THAT FORD RECENTLY COMPLETELY REVISED THE LCM WITH AN INTERNAL REDESIGN BY FORD ENGINEERS SO THAT THE NEW LCMS WILL NEVER FAIL. THE WEBSITE ALSO NOTED THAT SOME DEALERS CONTINUE TO SELL THE OLD DEFECTIVE LCM WHICH WILL ONLY FAIL AGAIN. MY OPINION: BESIDES NOT WANTING TO PAY AN EXHORBITANT AMOUNT TO REPLACE ONE COMPONENT OF A VEHICLE'S LIGHT SYSTEM, IT APPEARS FORD IS FULLY AWARE OF A POTENTIALLY DEADLY DEFECT AFFECTING MANY THOUSANDS OF GRAND MARQUIS' AND CROWN VICTORIAS CURRENTLY IN USE, BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY DEFECT MUST BE ADDRESSED! IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE FATAL ACCIDENTS HAVE ALREADY OCCURRED BUT WERE MISATTRIBUTED.
BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED, IN BOTH DIM AND HIGH-BEAM POSITIONS. THEY WILL NOT COME ON IN EITHER THE AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL DASHBOARD SWITCH POSITIONS. (THE BULBS ARE STILL GOOD.) THE PARKING LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS, TAIL LIGHTS, AND BRAKE LIGHTS CONTINUED TO FUNCTION. THIS HAPPENED AT NIGHT. IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS THAT THIS FAILURE WILL *ALWAYS* OCCUR AT NIGHT, OR DURING STORMY WEATHER, THREATENING SAFETY, BECAUSE HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT NORMALLY USED DURING THE DAYTIME. LATER TESTING REVEALED THE PROBLEM TO BE INTERMITTENT. AT ONE POINT, THE AUTOMATIC DASHBOARD SWITCH POSITION WORKED FOR BOTH DIM AND HIGH-BEAMS, BUT THE MANUAL SWITCH POSITION DID NOT WORK. THE NEXT MORNING, BOTH THE AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL POSITIONS WORKED. WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED, NEITHER POSITION WOULD WORK. THIS INTERMITTENT PROBLEM IS CONSISTENT WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AND REPORTS FOR THE 2003-2005 MODEL YEARS, AND THE PROBLEM IS THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE. THIS MODULE IS SO UNRELIABLE THAT IT HAS BEEN NAMED THE "LIGHTS OUT MODULE" ON THE INTERNET. HAD TO PULL OVER IN A PARKING LOT BECAUSE IT WAS DARK. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE LIGHTS STARTED TO WORK AGAIN BUT SOON FAILED AGAIN.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE SEAT BELTS WERE REPLACED BECAUSE THE PRETENSIONERS HAD FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,450. UPDATED 05/08/12*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE FRONT AND REAR SEAT BELTS WERE REPLACED. UPDATED 05/14/12

THE DEALER ADVISED HIM THAT HE NEEDED TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,000. LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE FAILED. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT DRIVING IN TRAFFIC OR ON THE FREEWAY AS MANY OF THE COMPLAINTS I FOUND ON THE INTERNET. THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFECT AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED AS THIS ISSUE OCCURS NORMALLY BETWEEN 50,000 AND 100,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM IS SO LARGE THAT JUNK YARD OPERATORS TOLD ME THAT ALL THE WRECKED 2005 MODELS HAVE BEEN STRIPPED OF THIS ITEM. THIS IS THE FIRST COMPLAINT I HAVE EVER REGISTERED BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND MUST BE ADDRESSED BEFORE TRAFFIC DEATHS OCCUR OR HAVE OCCURRED.
