(1) I OWN A MERCURY SABLE, 4 DR. SEDAN [XXX] WITH APPROXIMATELY 35,550 MILES ON IT. LAST WEEK, 06/03/05) WITH NO OBVIOUS CAUSATION (I.E. DID NOT RUN OVER A HUGE POTHOLE OR ROCK/CURB), I BEGAN TO HEAR A RUBBING NOISE FROM THE REAR WHEEL - IT SOUNDED A BIT LIKE A BRAKE SHOE DRAGGING OR A TREE BRANCH STUCK IN THE WELL RUBBING THE TIRE. ON IMMEDIATE ROADSIDE INSPECTION, I COULD NOT SEE ANY OBVIOUS PROBLEM. (2) LATER WHEN I REMOVED THE WHEEL I DETERMINED THAT THE REAR COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN OR SLIPPED DOWN OVER THE LOWER RETAINING CUP AND A SHARP END OF THE COIL WAS PROTRUDING OUT FROM UNDER THE RETAINING CUP AND IT WAS CUTTING A NEAT GROOVE IN THE SIDEWALL OF MY TIRE. THE TIRE HAD NOT YET LOST PRESSURE BUT WOULD HAVE IN A VERY FEW MILES WITH POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. (3) I CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE FOR FORD MOTOR CO. ON 06/06/05 AND 06/07/05 AND SPOKE TO A REPRESENTATIVE AND A SUPERVISOR AND THEY REQUIRED THAT I HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED BY A DEALERSHIP WHICH I DID. AFTER HAVING THE DEALERSHIP VERIFY THE PROBLEM (FRACTURED RIGHT REAR COIL SPRING) THEY REFUSED TO OFFER ME ANY ASSISTANCE IN THE REPAIRS AND WOULD SAY ONLY THAT THE RECALL (2000 MERCURY SABLE GS NHTSA RECALL ID NUMBER: 04V332000 RECALL DATE: JUL 15, 2004 COMPONENT: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS) COVERED ONLY THE FRONT SPRINGS AND THAT THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO OPERATE WITHOUT REPAIRS. I AM TAKING THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL TECHNICIAN FOR REPLACEMENT OF BOTH SPRINGS WITH NON-FORD MOTOR COMPANY, AFTER MARKET PARTS. I WILL HAVE THEM RETAIN THE OLD PARTS AND WILL BE PLEASED TO MAKE THESE AVAILABLE TO YOU FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER SAID THAT HE WILL PUT FRONT SHIELDS AROUND THE FRONT SPRINGS BECAUSE THE SPRING BREAKS AND PUNCHES THE FRONT TIRE. CONSUMER COMPLAINED THAT THE REAR SPRING BROKE AND PUNCHED THE REAR TIRE. DEALER SAID THERE WAS NO COVERAGE.*AK
REAR COIL SPRING FAILURE (FRACTURE) CAUSING BLOW-OUT OF REAR DRIVER-SIDE TIRE. TEMPORARY LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE. EXISTING RECALL FOR FRONT COIL SPRING FAILURE, THIS OCCURED ON THE REAR. BOTH REAR SPRINGS AND CUT TIRE REPLACED AT OWNERS EXPENSE.

DT: LEFT REAR SPRING BROKE AND BLEW THE REAR TIRE. CONSUMER WAS NOT DRIVING WHEN THIS HAPPEN. WHEN THE CAR WAS A YEAR OR TWO OLD AND WAS DRIVEN WITH 2 ADULTS IN THE BACK SEAT THE CONSUMER HEARD A CLANKING NOISE WHEN TURNING A CORNER OR HITTING A BUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWICE BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. THEY PUT BUSHING ON THE FIRST TIME AND THE SECOND TIME THE DEALER SAID THEY FOUND NOTHING. IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED AT THE COST OF $489.000 *AK *NM
MY 2000 MERCURY SABLE WAS PARK AT MY PLACE OF BUSINESS....LEAVING FOR HOME, STARTED UP THE CAR (BOOM) SMOKE FOR UNDER THE HOOD. THE PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD COVER EXPLODED (TOP OF THE ENGINE) . IT'S GOING TO COST ME OVER $600 TO REPAIR AND REPLACE. HAS THIS PROBLEM HAPPEN TO EVERYONE ELSE..
SHORTLY AFTER RECALL WAS COMPLETED FOR FRONT SPRING SHIELDS I NOTICED THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION SAGGING. TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER WHICH DISCOVERED THAT THE RIGHT REAR SPRING WAS BROKEN. CAR IS LIGHTLY DRIVEN, NO TOWING, AND HAS ONLY 80,000 MILES. DEALER IS RECOMMENDING REPLACEMENT OF BOTH REAR SPRINGS AT MY EXPENSE ($380). AFTER READING OTHER CONSUMER COMPLAINTS WITH SABLE SPRINGS, SEEMS TO ME THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WITH DEFECTIVE SPRINGS.*AK
2000 MERCURY SABLE WITH DURATEC V6 24V ENGINE. STARTED CAR; LOUD BANG; INTAKE MANIFOLD EXPLODED. NO PREVIOUS PROBLEMS WITH STARTING OR DRIVING THE VEHICLE. ALL MAINTENANCE DONE IN TIMELY MANNER. WHEN INTAKE MANIFOLD EXPLODED PIECES OF PLASTIC FLEW AND INSULATION UNDER HOOD WAS ACTUALLY SHREDDED. COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY HAD SOMEONE HAD HOOD OPEN WHEN CAR WAS STARTED. CAR CURRENTLY AT NEW BRIGHTON FORD WAITING FOR REPAIR.*AK
FRONT SPRINGS WHERE IDENTIFIED AS A POSSIBILITY OF BREAKING AND WAS NOTIFIED BY FORD, THE SPRINGS DID BREAK PENETRATING INTO THE TIRE. SPRINGS WHERE REPLACED BY MANUFACTURER. FORTUNATELY THIS HAPPENED AT A LOW SPEED NOT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT WHEN THE TIRE BLEW OUT FROM THE SPRING ENTERING THE TIRE. FIVE MONTHS LATER, A REAR SPRING HAS BROKEN AND AGAIN WAS FORCED TOWARD THE TIRE, THIS TIME NOT PENETRATING IT, BUT CREATING A DEEP GOUGE IN THE TIRE. CAR IS NOW IN DEALER SHOP FOR REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF SPRING, STRUT, AND TIRE. FORD NOT AWARE OF PROBLEM WITH REAR SPRINGS SO COST OF REPAIR WILL BE AT OWNERS EXPENSE. I HAVE REQUESTED THAT THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT RETURN ALL PARTS TO ME AFTER REPLACEMENT. IT WAS OF THE OPINION OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL PARTS WERE ORDERED AND REPLACED. CONCERN NOW IS THE INTEGRITY OF THE OTHER REAR SPRING.*JB

FRACTURED LEFT REAR COIL SPRING RUPTURING LEFT REAR TIRE RESULTING IN RAPID AIR LOSS. *NM
WHILE STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AT FULL THROTTLE, EVEN WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED AGAIN, AND THE IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF. VEHICLE ACCELERATED THROUGH AN INTERSECTION, AND ONLY STOPPED WHEN THE FRONT AXLE BROKE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP, BUT THEY COULDN'T INDICATED WHY THE ACCELERATION FAILURE OCCURRED, EVEN WHEN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PERFORMED.*AK CAR KEPT LUNGING AND HOPPING FORWARD WHILE THE BRAKES WERE ON. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE D THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *BF *NM
THIS VEHICLE IS USED MOSTLY AROUND TOWN AND IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF INCLUDING FREQUENT WASHINGS. THERE WAS ABSOLUTLEY NO WARNING OF ANY TYPE PRIOR TO FAILURE. THE SPRING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT STRUT BROKE, AND A JAGGED PORTION LODGED INTO THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, COMPLETLEY DESTROYING IT. THE SIDE OF THE CAR DROPPED CONSIDERABLY. THIS ALL OCCURED WHILE THE CAR WAS AT REST IN MY GARAGE. THE CAR HAS LOW MI. AND NO RUST, THIS INCLUDES THE SPRING. MERCURY REFERED ME TO A DEALER TO HAVE THE SPRINGS REPLACED, NOTING THAT THEIR COVERED TO 150,000MI. I WAS TOLD TO SUBMIT A RECIEPT FOR POSSIBLE RE-IMBURSEMENT FOR THE DAMAGED TIRE AND TOWING. (THE CAR WAS UNDRIVEABLE) I KEPT A PIECE OF THE SPRING THAT BROKE OFF. I'M NO METALURGIST, BUT THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE OF THE SPRING, IM THANKFUL IN MY INSTANCE NO ONE WAS HURT.*AK
AFTER NOTICING THAT REAR LEFT TIRE WAS FLAT CONSUMER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE REPAIR SHOP, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT BOTH REAR COIL SPRINGS BROKE. DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED.*AK THE RESULT OF THE TIRE BEING FLAT WAS BECAUSE THE SHARP EDGES OF THE COIL SPRING CUT THE RUBBER ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE. CONSUMER AWARE OF THE FACT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE FRONT COIL SPRING AND DISAPPOINTED THAT THERE NOT A RECALL FOR THE REAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. *BF
VEHICLE EXPERIENCED STALLING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKES TO HAVE NO CONTROL. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BY CONSUMER.*AK
WHILE DRIVING ONE OF THE VEHICLE'S COIL SPRINGS BROKE AND PUNCTURED ONE OF THE TIRES. *NM *JB
CAR HAD SOUNDED CREAKY IN THE BACK - HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT, BUT NOTHING WAS FOUND. RIGHT REAR SPRING BROKE AND FELL OFF THE SHOCK - PUNCTURING THE TIRE. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED, THE SPRING AND TIRE BOTH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
WE WERE NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL ON THE FRONT SPRINGS OF THE 2000 MERCURY SABLE IN AUGUST OF 2004. WE WENT TO THE GARAGE TO ASK WHAT WE SHOULD DO. THE GARAGE SAID THEY WOULD CALL WHEN THE PARTS WERE MADE AND WHEN TO COME IN FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE SPRINGS. WE WERE NEVER CALLED TO BRING THE CAR IN. ON JANUARY 23, 2005 WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE THE FRONT SPRING EXPLODED WITH SUCH A FORCE IT BLEW OUT THE FRONT TIRE. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO THE FORD GARAGE WHERE IT WAS REPAIRED. THEY PUT NEW SPRINGS ON THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND REPLACED THE TIRE AT NO COST. WHILE IN THE GARAGE THEY FOUND A REAR SPRING THAT WAS BROKEN. THE SERVICE MANAGER CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO SEE IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED AT NO COST ALSO. FORD SAID NO BECAUSE THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE REAR SPRINGS. WE HAD TO PAY FOR THE REAR SPRINGS. WE FEEL AT THE VERY LEAST THE COST OF THE REAR SPRINGS SHOULD BE PAID FOR BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY. IF WE HAD BEEN DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY INSTEAD OF BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS SINCE THE TIRE ACTUALLY BLEW APART. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN AT THE VERY LEAST FORCING FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO PAY FOR THE TOTAL SPRING REPLACEMENT. THANKS. *NM
CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE COIL SPRING SHIELD, AND TO DATE NO FURTHER NOTIFICATION FOR THE PART WAS MADE BY THE MANUFACTURER. COIL SPRING SHIELD NHTSA RECALL 04V332000. *AK
NOISE IN REAR, WORSE WHEN TURNING RIGHT AND BRAKING. PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED TO BE BROKEN REAR COIL SPRINGS AND THEY WERE REPLACED. IT APPEARS UNDER INVESTIGATION # PEO5054 THAT A NUMBER COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THE 2000 MERCURY SABLES. WE WOULD LIKE REIMBURSEMENT OF OUR $374.28 REPAIR BILL FOR REPLACEMENT OF THIS DEFECTIVE PART AND LABOR INCURRED REPAIR DATE 1/7/05. *JB
THE RIGHT SIDE COIL SPRING SHEARED OFF WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED INSIDE OF THE GARAGE. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE COIL SPRINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CORROSION. *AK IT WAS THE REAR COIL SPRINGS WHICH FAILED. *ER *JB
04 V 332 000/FRONT COIL SPRING: WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE CONSUMER HEARD A CRUNCHY/GRINDING NOISE AND THEN NOTICE THAT THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS DEFLATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE FRONT COIL SPRING HAS BROKEN AND PUNCTURE THE RIGHT SIDE TIRE. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE BOTH NOTIFIED.
RECALL CAMPAIGN: THE DEALER REFUSED TO PERFORM THE RECALL (04S17) REPAIRS BECAUSE THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE FACTORY TIRES AND SPRINGS. *NM *SC *JB
FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT WILL NOT RETRACT. LEFT REAR SEAT BELT WILL NOT RETRACT.*AK
BOTH FRONT SEAT BELTS (DRIVER & PASSENGER) LOCK-UP ON THE ROTATION AND PREVENT YOU TO PUT ON SEAT BELT, WHICH CAN RESULT TO SEVERE INJURY IN A CRASH. *JB
MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT MY REAR SEAT BELTS, I USED THE MIDDLE REAR SEAT BELT FROM 2003 UNTIL IT BROKE IN 2004. THE MIDDLE IS WHERE I PUT MY SON'S CAR SEAT. I ALWAYS MADE SURE IT WAS IN RIGHT, IT MOVED NO MORE THEN AN INCH AND I ALWAYS LOCKED THE SEAT BELT. I DIDN'T TAKE THE CAR SEAT OUT MUCH SO THAT IS WHY I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT COULD BREAK SO FAST. I HAD TO MOVE MY SON TO A DIFFERENT SEAT UNTIL I COULD GET IT FIXED, AND THEN THE REAR SEAT BELT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE STARTED TO ACT UP, WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR THE SEAT BELT TO RETRACT IT WOULDN'T YOU HAD YOU USE YOUR FINGERS AND PUSH IT IN. I HAVE NOT GOTTEN IT FIXED YET. I CANT AFFORD TO AND FORD WONT PAY FOR IT. BOTH TIMES I HAD FORD TAKE A LOOK AT THE SEAT BELTS, AND THE ONLY THING THEY DID WAS GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE TO REPLACE THE SEAT BELT. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS IS THE SEAT BELT SHOULD LAST LONGER THEN THE CAR. *JB
WHEN TURNING THE KEY IN THE IGNITION A LOUD EXPLOSION SOUND WAS PRODUCED. THE ENGINE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAD MALFUNCTIONED. AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER TO FIND THE CAUSE. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB

WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE COIL SPRING PUNCTURE THE TIRE. THE CONSUMER NOTICE THE FLAT TIRE AND SEEN THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY THE "FRONT COIL SPRING". THE DEALERSHIP WILL BE NOTIFIED. THE CAUSE WAS NOT DETERMINED. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. 8NM

EVENT LEADING UP TO FAILURE: NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS (38,000 MILES) FAILURE: SUSPENSION--LINKAGE BECOMES LOOSE PREMATURELYAND RATTLES. HANDLING BECOMES LOOSE PRESENTING A SAFETY HAZARD. WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT FAILURE: 1 CAR HAD LINKAGE REPLACED. 1 CAR IS STILL IN NEED OF REPAIR
THE REAR COIL SPRINGS HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY. THE OWNER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. *JB THE STRUT WAS POINTING AND RUBBING THE TIRE. *SC
WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK *TC
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP IN TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED SUDDENLY AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A FRACTURED SPINAL CORD. *AK
ON RAINING DAYS, WHILE DRIVING THE AT ANY SPEED, THE SERPENTINE BELT WOULD FALL OFF AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP ON MANY OCCASIONS, AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *JB
MANUFACTURER ISSUED A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS. IT WAS ALSO STIPULATED THAT BOTH COIL SPRINGS WOULD BE REPAIRED. HOWEVER, THE LEFT COIL SPRING WAS REPAIRED IN DECEMBER. THIS OCCURRED BEFORE THE ISSUING OF THE RECALL. CURRENTLY,THE RIGHT SIDE NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED, AND THE DEALER WILL NOT REPLACE THIS SIDE UNLESS IT FRACTURED. *AK *SC *JB
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE, AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. MECHANIC ADVISED CONSUMER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED ON DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE, NO CODES WERE REPORTED. ALSO, MECHANIC INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. *AK

THE SWITCH TO TURN THE HEADLIGHTS ON AND OFF BROKE OFF IN THE CONSUMER'S HAND. *NM THE STATED THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE SWITCH, HOWEVER SHE WAS TOLD HER VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED BECAUSE THE PART WAS MADE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE. *JB
CONSUMER HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY ONLY IDENTIFIED THE FRONT COIL SPRING AS BEING A POSSIBLE PROBLEM WHICH WAS CURRENTLYBEING RECALLED. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN 04V332000 CONCERNING FRONT COIL SPRING. NO PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. *AK
COIL SPRINGS CORRODED. VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO DEALER FOR SERVICE. LATER, CONSUMER FOUND OUT THERE WAS RECALL 04V332000 ON THIS SUBJECT. SHE SPOKE WITH MERCURY FOR REIMBURSEMENT. THEY REFERRED HER TO THE DEALER WHERE SHE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. DEALER TOLD CONSUMER THAT IT MIGHT TAKE A WHILE FOR HER TO RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT. ON AUGUST 31ST, 2004 CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THE REIMBURSEMENT WAS SENT OUT. THERE WAS STILL NO RESPONSE WEEKS AFTER. THEY CONTACTED DEALER AGAIN, AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEVER HAD PAPER WORK DONE. BOTH MANUFACTURER AND DEALER GAVE CONSUMER A RUN AROUND. CONSUMER STILL DID NOT RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT.*AK
THE REAR COIL SPRINGS ON THE VEHICLE BROKE. IT WAS DISCOVERED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED. NO RECALL ON THE REAR. *JB
THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER ON THE COIL SPRING. THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPLACE THE OTHER COIL SPRINGS PER THE MANUFACTURE UNTIL THEY FAILED. *JB
