2003 NISSAN ALTIMA ENGINE SHUTS DOWN AT SLOW SPEEDS AND WHILE AT STOP LIGHTS. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIME WHILE DRIVING AND HAS NEARLY RESULTED IN 2 ACCIDENTS. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 12 OCCURRENCES THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT CAME ON WITH A CODE INDICATING CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT IS FAULTY. THERE IS A SIMILAR RECALL FOR 2002 VEHICLES BUT NOT FOR 2003. WAS TOLD NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM THIS YET TO WARRANT A RECALL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH UPHILL, THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, BUT THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG DID NOT. AS A RESULT, HE SUSTAINED CHEST AND HEAD INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 50,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER IN THE VEHICLE, BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY PARKED AT THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,746 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.

MY 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA LOST POWER ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE I WAS TRAVELING AT 55-60MPH ON 7/11/2007. MY BREAKS DID NOT WORK AFTER THE FAILURE BUT I WAS ABLE TO STEER. THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THE CAM AND CRANK SENSOR FAILED AND SAID I NEEDED A NEW "CAM AND CRANK SENSOR KIT." THIS IS THE EXACT PART THAT WAS DEFECTIVE IN 2002 NISSAN ALTIMAS (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 03V455000) AND RESULTED IN A RECALL. WHEN I POINTED THIS OUT TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THEY INVESTIGATED IT AND SAID THAT WHILE SOME 2003S WERE ALSO INVOLVED IN THE RECALL, MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED. MY '03 ALTIMA'S PRODUCTION DATE IS 11/07/2002 AND THE DELIVERY AND IN-SERVICE DATE IS 12/12/02. I THINK THE PART SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED IN 2003 NISSAN ALTIMAS TO SEE IF THE RECALL OF THE CAM OR CRANK SENSORS IN THE 2002 NISSAN ALTIMAS (REFERENCED ABOVE) SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MORE 2003 MODELS.

THE DEALER CHARGED HER $190.13 TO REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR. SHE THOUGHT THE COST WAS COVERED BY THE RECALL AND FELT THAT SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CHARGED. THE RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE. NO FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED AT THIS TIME. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 57,300 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS INAPPLICABLE.
DRIVER'S DOOR INSIDE LATCH RELEASE BECAME INOPERATIVE, CAUSING INABILITY TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. IN ORDER TO EXIT TH EVEHICLE KEY HAD TO INSERTED IN THE IGNITION, WINDOW LOWERED AND DOOR LATCH RELEASED WITH OUTSIDE HANDLE. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN EMERGENCY SITUATION.*AK

SHE WAS NOT DENIED REIMBURSEMENT, BUT THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED HER PAPERWORK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE SUBMITTED THE PAPERWORK SEVERAL TIMES. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 67,458 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.

THE 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5 S DIED WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 50 MPH AND I HAD TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN TRAFFIC WITH NO POWER STEERING OR BRAKES. THE CAR WOULD THEN NOT START UP UNTIL COOLED OFF AND THEN STALLED AT SEVERAL TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON THE WAY HOME. THE CAR HAD HALF AS MUCH POWER AS NORMAL AND CONTINUED TO STALL. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND I TOOK IT TO NISSAN WHERE THEY FOUND THE PROBLEM TO BE THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. I HAD IT REPLACED AND NOW THE CAR IS FINE. THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL BECAUSE IT IS A SERIOUS RISK TO INJURY TO THE DRIVER OF THE CAR AND OTHER CARS AROUND. *AK

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER CRANKSHAFT SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 06V242000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) WAS REFERENCED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 47,136 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,136.
ON SEVERAL INSTANCES THE ENGINE CUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. EVENTUALLY, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, AND DEALER INFORMED ME OF RECALL CAMPAIGN TO REPROGRAM THE ECM. ALSO, THEY FOUND ERROR CODES P0725 AND P0335. THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO REPLACE MY CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR (AT MY COST -- THIS WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL). AFTER THE DEALER COMPLETED THE RECALL WORK, THE CAR STILL STALLED THAT VERY DAY ON THE WAY HOME. TOOK THE CAR TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS CLEARED BY MECHANIC AND HAS NOT LIT UP AGAIN, HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED WHILE DRIVING AGAIN. THIS SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO THE SYMPTOMS WHICH LED TO THE RECALL OF THE 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA'S. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN DECEMBER 2002, BUT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 2002 RECALL. THE 2003 RECALL ONLY CONSISTED OF REPROGRAMMING THE ECM -- WHICH DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AS THE VEHICLE STILL CUTS OUT AT RANDOM TIMES IN MOVING TRAFFIC. PLEASE INVESTIGATE -- THIS IS SIMILAR TO HUNDREDS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS UNDER 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA'S THAT I FOUND READING THROUGH THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE -- PLEASE CONNECT THE DOTS AND MAKE NISSAN OWN UP TO THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE GAS CAP REMAINS OPEN AND I HAVE SEEN IT ON MANY OF THE SAME MODEL ALTIMA. HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL ON THIS? THE GAS CAP DOOR DOES NOT SHUT. *TR
TWO DAYS AGO, MY CAR STALLED WHILE I WAS TURNING LEFT INTO A PARKING LOT. THANKFULLY, I WAS ABLE TO COAST THE CAR TO A SAFE LOCATION SINCE I AM SIX MONTHS PREGNANT AND UNABLE TO PUSH A CAR. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO NISSAN OF ELK GROVE, WHERE THE NEXT DAY THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAILED CRANK POSITION SENSOR. I WAS UPSET, BECAUSE I HAD THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR REPLACED LAST YEAR AFTER MY CAR STARTING CUTTING OUT ON ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND THE SAME DEALER DETERMINED THE CRANK SENSOR NEEDED REPLACING. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE THE CRANK SENSOR YESTERDAY AND ASSUMED THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED. HOWEVER, AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT, MY CAR STALLED AND I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART IT. I PROMPTLY INFORMED THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR NISSAN OF ELK GROVE, AND HE MANAGED TO START MY CAR AFTER WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY. HE DROVE IT AROUND FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR ALMOST "CUT-OUT" ON HIM A FEW TIMES AND THAT THE RPM NEEDLE WAS "STIIF" AND "ACTING STRANGE". PRESENTLY, MY CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALER WHILE I AWAIT AN UPDATE ON THE CAUSE.
I OWN A 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA WITH A 2.5 LITER ENGINE. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM NISSAN. THE NOTICE STATED THAT THERE IS "THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE ENGINE MIGHT STOP RUNNING WHILE BEING DRIVEN DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM BETWEEN THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR AND THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. THIS MAY ALSO RESULT IN THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT COMING ON. IF THE ENGINE STOPS RUNNING WHILE DRIVINE, THIS COULD RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING." THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT DID COME ON, AND THE CAR BEGAN HESITATING WHILE BEING DRIVEN. IT ALSO WAS DIFFICULT TO START AFTER DRIVING FOR A FEW MINUTES. AFTER CALLING THE NUMBER ON THE NOTICE, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE THE ECM WAS REPROGRAMMED. THE NEXT DAY THE PROBLEMS RE-OCCURRED. WHEN MY HUSBAND CALLED THE DEALER THEY SAID THE SENSOR MUST HAVE GONE OUT, AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $140.00. HE CALLED NISSAN, WHO SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR, EVEN THOUGH THE PART WAS OBVIOUSLY FAULTY. THE REPAIRS WERE DONE BY AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR $40 LESS THAN NISSAN QUOTED. I FEEL THAT NISSAN PLACED A FEW DOLLARS ABOVE THE WELL BEING OF THEIR CLIENTS. I DID NOT THINK TO ASK FOR THE OLD PART. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS, THEY WENT DOWN TO THE FLOORBOARD. SHE HAD TO RUN INTO THE CURB IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CRANK SENSOR FAILED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. THERE IS RECALL # 06V242000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY BE ABLE TO REPROGRAM THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE SENSOR AS PART OF THE RECALL. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REPROGRAM THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE BECAUSE IT FAILED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 88,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT HALF A MILE FROM THE DEALER, HIS VEHICLE BEGAN FLASHING LIGHTS, THE DOORS LOCKED AUTOMATICALLY, AND THE WINDOWS AUTOMATICALLY OPENED AND CLOSED PARTIALLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THE CONTACT TOOK HIS VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS COINCIDENTAL. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE IS NOT RELATED TO THE COMPUTER SYSTEM. THE ENGINE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 35,427.
THE ENGINE LIGHT PERIODICALLY FLASHED ON/OFF. WE HAD THE CAR SERVICED AT A NISSAN DEALER WHICH COST $1000. 3 MONTHS LATER,WE SPENT $300. FINALLY,2 MONTHS LATER THE MOTOR GOES OUT AND WE SPEND $5000 TO REPLACE IT IN A CAR LESS THAN 4YRS OLD(BOUGHT BRAND NEW -NOT A USED VEHICLE). THE DEALER STATED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH IT IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 36,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.

THE DEALER REFUSED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIR FOR FREE UNTIL THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS REPLACED. NHTSA RECALL # 06V242000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) WAS FOUND. THE 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA RECENTLY STARTED STALLING FOR NO APPARENT REASON. INITIALLY IT HAPPENED WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT, THEN PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION THERE WAS MINIMAL RISK OF AN ACCIDENT. THEN YESTERDAY AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE CAR HESITATED BRIEFLY BEFORE ACCELERATING AND THEN WITHIN SECONDS ALL POWER WAS LOST. IT TOOK NEARLY 15 TRIES TO RESTART, AT WHICH POINT, I PARKED IT AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHO WA STELLING ME THAT THERE WAS NO SIGN THAT THE CRANK SENSORS NEED TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WAS WHAT I WAS TOLD WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM), AND THEREWAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO IF THEY CAN'T GET IT TO REPEAT WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY. A MONTH AGO, I HAD II AT DEALER WHEN THIS PROBLEM ORIGINALLY OCCURRED AND THE COMPUTER WAS REPROGRAMMED. I WAS TOLD THAT IT TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM IN ABOUT 85% OF THE CASES. I' WAS AT A LOSS. I HAVE ONLY ONE CAR AND I NEED IT TO BE RELIABLE. I COULD NOT TAKE A CHANCE OF BEING ON THE INTERSTATE AT RUSH HOUR IN A CAR THAT MIGHT DECIDE TO STALL ON ME. I HAVE SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME NATURE ,AND WAS WONDERING WHY NO ONE SEEMED TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. ANY HELP YOU COULD PROVIDE WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED. *AK

THEY PERFORM THE RECALL WORK, BUT CONTACT CONTINUED TO HAVE THE SAME FAILURE THAT IS STATED ON THE RECALL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE CRANK SENSOR ASSEMBLY, BUT IT WOULD BE AT CONTACTS EXPENSE.
NISSAN 2003 ALTIMA 2.5 S. THE CAR TURNED OFF WHILE IN TRAFFIC. THERE HAD BEEN A RECENT RECALL BASED ON REPROGRAMMING THE CHIP THAT DESCRIBED THE CONDITION. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IT WAS THEN DIAGNOSED AS A CORRUPTED TIMING CHAIN SENSOR. WHEN REPLACED IT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. WHEN I ARGUED ABOUT THIS REPAIR BEING COVERED BY THE STANDARD 60 MONTH 60,000 MILE DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY IT WAS NOT. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT "WOULD NOT BE FAIR TO ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT PAID $180 TO GET HIS REPAIRED. A CAR THAT STOPS IN TRAFFIC AND WILL NOT TURN BACK ON FOR 5 - 45 MINUTES IS VERY DANGEROUS. *TR

THE DEALER MADE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS TO THE SENSORS TO MAKE THE LIGHT DIM. WHEN THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR ROUTINE BRAKE MAINTENANCE, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE VEHICLE WAS RUSTED. THE CONTACT WAS HESITANT TO TOUCH THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF RUST AND FEARED THAT SOMETHING WOULD FAIL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 98,000. I HAVE A 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA 3.5SE WITH A 5SPD MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I HAVE A RECURRING PROBLEM THAT MY CLUTCH WILL LOSE PRESSURE AND FALL TO THE FLOOR. MY WIFE'S 2003 NISSAN ALTIMA DIED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. SHE HAD TO GET OUT AND PUSH THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH MY 8 YEAR SON TRYING TO STEER THE CAR. THEN THE CAR WOULD NOT START. WHEN I ARRIVED I GOT THE CAR STARTED AND ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE IT TO THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP SINCE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT WAS ON. WHILE CROSSING THE INTERSECTION TO GET INTO THE DEALERSHIP PARKING LOT, THE CAR DIED ON ME. I HAD ENOUGH SPEED TO COAST THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND UP TO ENTRANCE TO THE PARKING LOT. THE NEXT DAY THE SERVICE ADVISOR FOR THE DEALERSHIP CALLS ME AND TELLS ME THE CAR NEED 2 RECALLS ( ONE OF WHICH I KNEW ABOUT -HEADLIGHTS, THE OTHER WAS TO REPROGRAM THE ECM. AFTER READING THAT THE RECALL INVOLVING THE ECM REPROGRAM WAS TO REPAIR A PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM BETWEEN THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR AND THE ECM - ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. I CALLED 1-800-NISSAN1 AND LOGGED MY COMPLAINT THAT MY WIFE (OR MYSELF) COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED AND THE VERY LEAST THAT NISSAN COULD DO WAS COVER THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY.
