THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE ENGINE QUITS. THIS HAS HAPPEND FOUR TIMES THE FRIST TIME IT STOPED IN THE MIDDLE OF I95 AFTERNOON RUSH. IT HAS HAPPEND THREE OYHER TIMES.*AK PE04077_CAT
WHILE SITTING AT AN INTERSECTION VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD, THEN HESITATED. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY ACCELERATE. CONSUMER'S FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKES, WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER. THEN, VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE TRANSMISSION IN MY NISSAN MURANO FAILED ON APRIL 25 2004. THE DEALERSHIP AND NISSAN, TO THIS POINT ,HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY UNCOOPERATIVE. THE CAR AS OF THIS DATE MAY 25 2004 IS STILL SITTING ON THEIR LOT UNTOUCHED. *NM
LOWER MPG REALIZED (20%) THAN STATED ON VEHICLE WHEN BOUGHT. ACTUAL MPG IS 16 CITY, 20 HIGHWAY. WHEN VEHICLE PURCHASED NEW IN SUMMER, MPG WAS 21-24 UNTIL NOVEMBER. DURING WINTER MONTHS DROPPED TO 16-20 MPG. UPON OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE ABOVE 50 DEGREES IN APRIL, MPG HAS RETURNED TO 21-24.
ALTERNATOR FAILED WHILE DRIVING NORMALLY. NO PRIOR WARNING. HAD TO REPLACE BATTERY TO GET CAR HOME. PARTS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY.*AK
ALTERNATOR FAILED IN 2003 NISSAN MURANO LEADING TO UNEXPECTED LOSS OF ALL ELECTRICAL POWER. THIS RESULTED IN LOSS OF POWER ACCESSORIES (BREAKS, STEERING, LIGHTS ETC). THE ENGINE WAS NON-RESPONSIVE TO THROTTLE INPUT. TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND WAS ABLE TO PULL TO SIDE OF THE ROAD SAFELY.*AK
LOWER MPG REALIZED (20%) THAN STATED ON VEHICLE WHEN BOUGHT. ACTUAL MPG IS 16 CITY-20 HIGHWAY. COMPLAINT TO DEALER RESULTED IN NO SATISFACTION.*AK
WHILE DRIVING HOME WITH AROUND 5000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, THE BATTERY AND BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH TURNS ON. I CALLED THE DEALER TO SEE WHAT IT MEANT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT WAS THE WARNING SIGN OF A FAILED ALTERNATOR. THEY ADVISED ME TO TOW THE CAR TO THE NEAREST DEALER BECAUSE THE CAR WAS BASICALLY RUNNING OFF THE BATTERY. THE DEALER WAS CLOSING, SO I HAD TO LEAVE IT THERE OVERNIGHT WITHOUT A RENTAL CAR. THE NEXT DAY THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO SWAP THE ALTERNATOR WITH A NEW ONE.*AK
THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS CANNOT BE RAISED TO WIPE OFF ACCUMULATING SNOW AND ICE WITHOUT OPENING THE HOOD. THIS IS NOT SIMPLY AN INCONVENIENCE, BUT, ON HIGHWAYS DURING A SNOW STORM, A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD.*AK

HOWEVER I HAVE READ THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEIR ALTERNATORS BUT HAVE NOT REPORTED TO A GOVERNENT AGENCY.*AK

2003 NISSAN MURANO SL AWD , ALTERNATOR DEFECTIVE. BATTERY LIGHT COMES UP. *AK
CRASH WAS FATAL HEAD-ON COLLISION INVOLVING POWER STEERING PROBLEM IN 2003 AND 2004 MURANOS. MURANO DRIVER WAS ROUNDING SWEEPING RIGHT-HAND CURVE ON FAMILIAR ROAD AND ENDED UP IN ONCOMING LANE. DRIVER APPARENTLY TRIED TO STEER BACK INTO PROPER LANE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO, APPARENTLY BECAUSE STEERING UNEXPECTEDLY BECAME VERY STIFF AND HARD TO TURN WHEN TRYING TO TURN QUICKLY TO AVOID CRASH. CRASH KILLED MURANO DRIVER INSTANTLY, AND INJURED DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS OF ONCOMING PICK-UP TRUCK. EXTENSIVE RESEARCH IN PUBLIC SOURCES HAS FOUND THAT CIRCUMSTANCES OF THIS ACCIDENT MIRROR PROBLEMS WITH SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING-ASSIST EXPERIENCED BY NUMEROUS MURANO DRIVERS IN ACCIDENTS AND NEAR-ACCIDENTS AT NORMAL DRIVING SPEEDS, AS IN OTHER COMPLAINTS ON NHTSA WEBSITE AND NISSAN OWNER WEBSITES, AND AS FOUND BY CONSUMERS REPORTS ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE MANEUVER TESTING. THIS IS A DESIGN ISSUE,WITH STEERING PUMP BASED ON LIGHTER ALTIMA UNABLE TO KEEP UP WITH QUICK STEERING INPUTS. INTERPLAY OF CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION AND DRIVE-BY-WIRE THROTTLE MAY ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO PROBLEM BY CREATING POSSIBILITY OF RAPID DROP IN RPM WHEN DRIVER QUICKLY TAKES FOOT OFF ACCELERATOR, AS IN EMERGENCY. IT IS NOT CLEAR WHETHER OTHER PROBLEMS WITH CAR'S STEERING PERFORMANCE ALSO LED TO INITIAL CROSSING INTO ONCOMING LANE. NISSAN CHANGED STEERING PUMP IN 2005 AND LATER MODELS TO DEAL WITH PROBLEM. DRIVERS OF 2003 AND 2004 MODELS ARE STILL AT RISK FOR LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHEN THEY MOST NEED IT. WHEN LOSS OCCURS IN PARALLEL PARKING IT IS AN INCONVENIENCE; WHEN IT HAPPENS UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, IT IS LIFE-THREATENING, AS IN THIS CASE. BECAUSE IT IS A DESIGN FEATURE, ALL 2003 AND 2004 MURANOS ARE SUBJECT TO THIS PROBLEM. MURANO OWNERS (AND DEALERS) SHOULD BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY OF THIS DANGEROUS DESIGN DEFECT. I PURCHASED A NISSAN MURANO NEW IN 2003. SINCE NEW IT HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THROTTLE RESPONSE LAG. I WILL BE IN TRAFFIC OR SITTING AT A LIGHT AND WHEN I PRESS THE THROTTLE TO ACCELERATE THE CAR RESPONDS VERY SLOWLY. I HAVE NEARLY BEEN HIT AT INTERSECTIONS WHERE I AM TURNING. THE DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AT MY EXPENSE . THIS WAS NO HELP. THE DEALER THEN WANTED TO REPLACE A VALVE IN THE TRANSMISSION AT MY EXPENSE( $2600). I ASKED IF OTHER OWNERS HAD REPORTED SIMILAR PROBLEMS TO NISSAN AND THE ANSWER FROM THE DEALER WAS THAT NO ONE HAD EVER REPORTED THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND NISSAN SEEMS TO IGNORE THE OWNER COMPLAINTS. I GUESS SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET KILLED TO GET THEIR ATTENTION. THIS HAPPENS REGULARLY AND REPEATEDLY SINCE NEW IN 2003. IT'S STILL HAPPENING TODAY, IN 2010. *TR
NISSAN MURANO HAS DANGEROUS DESIGN DEFECTS COMPOUNDED BY UNRESOLVED ELECTRONICS PROBLEMS. DESIGN FLAWS: 1) INEFFECTIVE DEFROSTER SYSTEM , 2) LONG-ARMED WIPERS CLOG EASILY, 3) ALL DOORS MUST BE UNLOCKED TO GET GAS (INVITING CARJACKERS). THE DEFROSTER-WIPER PROBLEM WAS MADE WORSE BY ELECTRONICS. WHILE I WAS CLEARING WINDOWS THE CAR LOCKED IN 13 DEGREE WEATHER. *AK THE CAR: 1) LOCKS DOORS AT RANDOM INTERVALS , 2) PUTS THE WINDOWS DOWN WITHOUT WARNING (THE SERVICE MANAGER SAYS, "DON'T NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN THIS CAR!"), 3) THE REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM OFTEN DOES NOT BEEP REQUIRING THAT I CHECK ALL DOORS (ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE OTHER PROBLEMS WITH LOCKS), 4) NOW THE CAR SOMETIMES TELLS ME THAT THE DRIVER'S DOOR IS OPEN (WHEN IT IS NOT). THE CAR IS VIRTUALLY NEW (LESS THAN 6,000 MILES). NISSAN KNOWS THEY HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THERE IS AN INTERNAL SERVICE MEMO IT. BUT WHEN CONSUMERS COMPLAIN THEY ARE "STONE-WALLED" WITH, "WE COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM." LAST FRIDAY MY CARACTED UP AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE MANAGER ACKNOWLEDGED IN WRITING ON NISSAN LETTERHEAD. THIS PROBLEM EXISTS AND IT IS IN A NUMBER OF MODELS -- MAXIMA, ALTIMA, TITAN TRUCKS, AND MURANOS. NISSAN SHOULDRECALL ALL OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES, PROVIDE RENTAL CARS WHILE REPAIRS ARE MADE, AND TO ISSUE CREDIT VOUCHERS FOR ALL OF THE PAST AGGRAVATION THEY CAUSED BY THEIR FAILING TO PROVIDE GOOD-FAITH SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS THEY KNOW EXIST.
REAR BRAKES ARE SQEAKY. STARTED SOON AFTER I PICKED UP VEHICLE IN NOV 2003. TALKED TO SERVICE DEPT ABOUT IT TOLD ME TO BE MORE AGRESSIVE WITH BRAKES....FINALLY AFTER ANOTHER CUSTOMER COMPLAINED OF SAME PROBLEM THEY REPLACED PADS.....BRAKES ARE AGAIN SQEAKING....ONCE AGAIN TOLD TO BE MORE AGRESSIVE WITH BRAKES.....MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM.*AK
COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING AT LOW RPM'S. WHILE SLOWING DOWN AND GOING AROUND A TURN, THE POWER STEERING WILL COMPLETELY FAIL. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED 6 ACCIDENTS IN THE LAST 4 MONTHS. ONLY HAPPENS AT LOW RPM'S.*AK
BRAKE PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE TO NO EFFORT. DURING A PANIC STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BEFORE THE CAR STOPS. ALSO, WHILESTANDING AT A STOP LIGHT, THE PEDAL WILL SLOWLY SINK DOWN TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE TO NO PRESSURE ON THE PEDAL. *AK
OVER 20 DIFFERENT RATTLE, SQUEAK, TAP, CREAK NOISES COMING FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR. NOISES COMING FROM WINDOW AREAS, DOOR PANELS, B-PILLAR (REAR SEAT AREA), CEILING, FLOORBOARDS, CARGO AREA, DASH BOARD, UNDERNEAT THE FRONT END OF THE CAR (FRONT WHEELS), TAILGATE AREA, FRONT SEATS, REAR SEAT BELT AREA, AND MORE EVERY DAY. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP MORE THAN THREE TIMES (TOTAL OF 21 DAYS IN THE SERVICE BAY) TO ATTEMPT REPAIR, BUT NO RESULTS....THE NOISES KEEP COMING. NOISES OCCUR WHEN HITTING BUMPS OR ANY SLIGHT IMPERFECTION IN THE ROAD, ALSO OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS FLEXING OR WHN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 40 DEGREES.....IT GETS EVEN WORSE! DEALER CAN'T FIX IT.*AK
I HAVE HAD TO BRING MY CAR IN 7 TIMES FOR DOORS RANDOMLY LOCKING THEMSELVES. IT HAS HAPPENED TWICE WHILE THE CAR WAS RUNNING AND 3 TIMES UPON FUELING THE CAR. NO RESOLVE TO THE ISSUE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD AT MY LATEST VISIT (YESTERDAY) THEIR CONCLUSION IS THAT IT IS ME LOCKING THEM SUBCONSCIOUSLY! *JB
THUMPING SOUND FROM REAR SUSPENSION WHEN DRIVING OVER UNEVEN SURFACES SUCH AS RAISED LETTERING/STRIPING IN THE ROAD. NOISE IS LOUD AND UNCOMFORTABLE. DEALERSHIP STATES THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. *LA
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REVERSE OUT OF DRIVEWAY VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE. CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER. MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT TRANSMISSION FAILED. *AK CONSUMER ALSO HAD DRIVESHAFT AND DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEMS. *PH
2003 MURANO. THE POWER STEERING FADES IN AND OUT WHILE TURNING AT SLOW SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN PARKING OR DRIVING IN TRAFFIC JAMS. ALL OF A SUDDEN, STEERING BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT AND REQUIRES MUSCLE POWER CAUSING A FEW NEAR COLLISIONS.*AK
DRIVER'S SEAT HAS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE TRACK. WHEN YOU STOP THE SEAT MOVES FORWARD AND WHEN YOU START TO DRIVE IT MOVES BACK. IT'S VERY NOTICEABLE. HAS GOTTEN WORSE, I NOW HAVE 11000 MILES ON IT. AFRAID THAT IF IN AN ACCIDENT THAT THE FORCE WOULD FORCE IT TO BREAK. *JB
LOCKED OUT OF VEHICLE 5 TIMES WITH KEY IN IGNITION, 2 TIMES WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING. DRIVER DOOR APPEARS TO LOCK SLIGHTLY WHEN PULLING DOOR HANDLE. I BELIEVE THE "PUSH-IN LOCK ABOVE THE DOOR RELEASE DOES NOT OPEN ALL THE WAY OR THE DRIVER'S HANDLE CAN EASILY PUSH IT PARTIALLY CLOSED ACCIDENTALLY. *JB
EVENT IS REPRODUCIBLE WHEN TURNED STEERING WHEEL AT A FAST RATE WHICH RESULTS IN A SUDDEN BUT TEMPORARY LOSS OF STEERING. DUE TO THIS DESIGN, WHEN TRYING TO MANEUVER THE CAR QUICKLY AT LOW SPEEDS MAKE IS VERY DANGEROUS TO CONTROL THE CAR WHEN THE POWER STEERING IS LOST, EVEN LOST TEMPORARILY.*AK
3 TIMES MY MURANO HAS STALLED WHILE DRIVING AND WOULD NOT RESTART. ALL 3 TIMES IT HAS TO BE TOWED (OVER A 2 MONTH PERIOD APPROX. 4K MILES NOW, STARTED AT JUST OVER UNDER 3K). THE FIRST 2 TIMES, THE ENGINE WOULD AT LEAST TURN, BUT NOT START. THE LAST TIME IT WOULD NOT EVEN TURN. IT SEEMS TO BE TEMPORARY BECAUSE WHEN THE DEALER LOOSK AT THE NEXT DAY, IT STARTS AND THEY SAY THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT.
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK APPROXIMATELY 3.5 MILES ON JULY 22ND 2004, I NOTICED THE BRAKE AND BATTERY LAMPS WERE ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD OF MY 2003 NISSAN MURANO SE AWD MANUFACTURED IN MARCH 2003. AFTER CONTACTING UNIVERSITY DEALERSHIP IN LANSING, MI ON JULY 23RD 2004, I WAS INFORMED TO BRING IT IN RIGHT AWAY. I DROVE IT ABOUT 10 MILES THAT DAY WITHOUT A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR FROM THE VEHICLE BUT THE LAMPS WERE STILL ON. LATER THAT DAY I WAS INFORMED IT WOULD NEED A NEW ALTERNATOR. I DID NOT HEAR ABOUT ANY PROGRESS UNTIL AUGUST 2ND 2004 WHICH IS 10 DAYS LATER. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THE ALTERNATOR WAS ORDERED THE PREVIOUS FRIDAY (30 JULY) AND SHOULD BE IN "LATE TODAY OR TOMORROW". I RECEIVED NO UPDATE UNTIL 7 DAYS LATER (AUGUST 10TH) WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THE ALTERNATOR HAD COME IN AND IT SHOULD BE DONE THE NEXT DAY. ON AUGUST 10TH, I WAS ALLOWED TO PICK UP THE REPAIRED VEHICLE. IN TOTAL I WAS WITHOUT THE VEHICLE FOR 18 CONSECUTIVE DAYS WHILE WAITING FOR A REPLACEMENT FOR A FAULTY ALTERNATOR WHICH ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY. I WAS STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING LOAN PAYMENTS DURING THE 18 DAYS I WAS NOT ABLE TO USE THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO ARRANGE ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION TO WHERE I WORK. THE NATURE OF THE FAILURE COULD HAVE LEAD TO A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AS THE ANTILOCK BRAKES WERE DISABLED, AND IF THE VEHICLE HAD LOST POWER (SOME DO, SOMETIMES DUE TO SIMULTANEOUS BATTERY FAILURE) CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE COULD HAVE BEEN LOST. IT IS ALSO AN IMPOSITION ON THE CUSTOMER TO HAVE TO WAIT AN EXTENDED PERIOD FOR REPLACEMENTS TO BE DELIVERED FOR COMMONLY FAULTY PARTS. THE ALTERNATOR FAILING IN THE MURANO IS NOT AN INFREQUENT OCCURRENCE, IT APPEARS TO HAPPEN IN A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF VEHICLES. BRAKES SQUEAK WHEN CAR IS IN REVERSE. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP TWICE, AND THEY TELL ME THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THIS NATURE FROM ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. NISSAN HAS NOT BEEN RESPONSIVE AT ALL TO THEIR DEALERS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *AK
CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE VIBRATES VIOLENTLY AT SPEEDS OVER 40 MPH. THIS HAPPENS ONLY WHEN REAR WINDOWS ARE IN THE DOWN POSITION. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO DEALER 4 TIMES, CANNOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE ADMITTED THE VIOLENT SHAKING. VIBRATION FELT CAN BE COMPARED TO RUMBLE STRIPS ON INTERSTATE.*AK
STEERING RUNS OF BOOST (POWER ASSIST) WHEN TURNING QUICKLY. THIS IS NOTICEABLE WHEN PARALLEL PARKING, BUT ALSO NOTICEABLE WHEN EVASIVE MANEUVERS ARE REQUIRED. I CAN SEE A CRASH OCCURRING BECAUSE OF THIS. MINE HAS ACTED LIKE THIS SINCE NEW, AND I BELIEVE THIS UNRELATED TO A BURST HIGH PRESSURE STEERING HOSE THAT MY MURANO ENCOUNTERED AT 52,600 MILES. CONSUMER REPORTS NOTED THAT 2003-2004 MURANOS ALL EXHIBIT THE LOSS OF STEERING BOOST ISSUE, YET NISSAN WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I SEE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS HERE ON NHTSA FOR THE SAME STEERING BOOST ASSIST ISSUE. *TR
VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY THEN DIES! DEALER CLAIMS IT IS THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. REPLACED SENSOR. HAPPENED 3-MORE TIMES UNTIL MANUFACTURER FINALLY AUTHORIZED COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF SENSOR TERMINAL CONNECTORS.IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP OVER 5-TOTAL WEEKS UP TILL NOW INCLUDING ALL 4 ATTEMPTS TO FIX. THEY ASSURED THAT THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON 3/11/04. WE HAVE GIVEN THE MANUFACTURER ITS FINAL OPPORTUNITY BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH OUR LEMON LAW RIGHTS, THEY SIMPLY REACTED BY TRYING TO FIND A LOOPHOLE IN THE PROCESS, SO WE ARE NOW PROCEEDING WITH LEGAL ACTION AGAINST NISSAN NOW ON OUR 5TH TIME OF THIS OCCURENCE.*AK

PROBLEMS WITH RELEASE BUTTON ON SEAT BELT. THE REAR SEAT BELT TIGHTENED AND FAILED TO UNLOCK, WHICH CAUSED THE CHILD TO BE INJURED, THE SEAT BELT HAD TO BE CUT IN ORDER FOR THE CHILD TO BE RELEASED. *MR *TS *JB
I JUST BOUGHT A 2003 NISSAN MURANO, RECENTLY I HAVE HAD A FEW PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. FIRST PROBLEM, AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 30 MILES AND THEN SHUTTING THE ENGINE OFF AND THEN TURNING ON THE ALARM. AFTER ABOUT TEN MINUTES I WOULD DISABLE THE ALARM AND START THE CAR. THE CAR WILL NOT START IT DOESN'T EVEN TURNOVER. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE ONCE WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IT AND WHEN I WAS DRIVING IT. LUCKILY IT HAPPENED TO START FOR MY WIFE AFTER SEVERAL TRIES. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS DEFECT? BY THE WAY, I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO DEALER AND IT IS STILL THERE.
THE ESTIMATED GAS MILEAGE WAS 20 MPG IN THE CITY AND 24 MPG ON THE HIGHWAY. WE ARE AVERAGING 13 MPG IN THE CITY, IN CENTRAL IL, WHERE THE TERRAIN IS FLAT. SQUEAKY WINDOWS/MOLDINGS. WE HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN 4 TIMES NOW TO HAVE THE SQUEAKES FIXED. *JB

I BOUGHT A 2003 NISSAN MURANO 6 DAYS AGO. AS I DROPPED MY CHILD OFF AT DAY CARE, AND WENT BACK TO THE VEHICLE, MY CAR WAS SMOKING AND RADIATOR FLUID WAS LEAKING EVERYWHERE. MY VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A STALK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN THAT CONTROLS THE HEADLIGHTS, FOG LIGHTS,LOW-HIGH BEAM FUNCTION AND TURN SIGNALS. THE HEADLIGHT/PARKING LIGHT/AUTOMATIC ON-OFF CONTROL IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ROTATING THE END OF THE STALK. THE FOGLIGHTS ARE CONTROLLED BY ROTATING ANOTHER RING FURTHER DOWN THE STALK. HIGH-LOW BEAM IS CONTROLLED BY PUSHING THE STALK FORWARD OR BACK, THE TURN SIGNALS ARE OPERATED BY MOVING THE STALK UP OR DOWN. IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO ROTATE THE FOGLIGHT RING WITHOUT ALSO INADVERTENTLY ROTATING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH, THUS TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF. ALSO WHEN USING THE TURN SIGNALS, PARTICULARLY FOR A LEFT TURN OR LANE CHANGE, IT IS TOO EASY TO ALSO CAUSE THE HEADLIGHT CONTROL RING TO ROTATE, AGAIN TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF. THIS OCCURRED LAST NIGHT ON I-80 IN HEAVY TRAFFIC BUT HAS ALSO HAPPENED ON SEVERAL EARLIER OCCASSIONS AND NEEDLESS TO SAY IS VERY DISCONCERTING, VERY SCARY AND OF COURSE VERY DANGEROUS. I FEEL THAT THE NHTSA SHOULD LOOK INTO THE FUNCTION OF THIS CONTROL TO SEE IF A RECALL OR RETROFIT IS WARRANTED. *AK
