WE DRIVE A 2003 NISSAN MURANO AWD. AFTER STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE WILL "STALL" IN TRAFFIC (RPMS DROP TO IDLE, AND THE CAR STOPS MOVING) WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS PRESSED. WITHIN 2-5 SECONDS THE ENGINE WILL REV UP (PRESUMABLE AS FAR AS IT GOES, BUT WE TAKE OUR FOOT OFF THE PEDAL BY THEN), AND THE VEHICLE WILL LURCH FORWARD AND DRIVE NORMALLY UNTIL WE STOP AGAIN. BY THE NATURE OF CITY DRIVING THIS OFTEN HAPPENS IN INTERSECTIONS AND OTHER LIKE DANGEROUS PLACES. I'VE ASKED MY WIFE NOT TO DRIVE IT IN TRAFFIC ANYMORE AS I THINK THIS IS DANGEROUS. THIS HAPPENS REPEATEDLY NOW AT 66K MILES. WE'VE TAKEN THIS TO TWO DEALERS WHO HAVE RECOMMENDED EVERYTHING FROM REPLACING THE VALVE BODY TO REPLACING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. *TR
THE DRIVER SEAT BEGAN "ROCKING" WHEN TAKING CORNERS. IT WAS NO LONGER ATTACHED TO THE FRAME AS APPARENTLY SOME WELDING WAS PERFORMED INSUFFICIENTLY. IT REQUIRED A NEW SEAT ASSEMBLY, WHICH WOULD HAVE COST ALMOST $1000. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET I REALIZED THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND WANTED TO FILE A REPORT SO THE NHTSA CAN HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE QUANTITY OF THESE ISSUES. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE ELECTRIC SEAT FAILED TO MOVE.ADJUST. I WAS REFUSED WARRANTY AS THE VEHICLE HAD 33000 MILES ON IT. I WAS TOLD THE COST OF THE PART WAS $1500 AND INSTALLATION ADDITIONAL. IT IS MY WIFE'S CAR AND SHE WEIGHS 100LB SOAKING WET. I FOUND THAT THERE IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THIS DESIGN AS THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF REMARKS POSTED ON THE INTERNET. PLEASE HELP. THIS SEAT NEEDS FIXED; HOWEVER, IT IS NOT COST EFFECTIVE FOR US TO FIX IT AND WE CAN NOT SELL IT AS IS. *TR
WHEN THE CAR FIRST STARTED ACTING UP I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE ON MY WAY TO WORK. IT ALL OF A SUDDED STARTED STALLING. I HAD TO PRESS THE DRIVING PEDDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN AND THEN IT WOULD TAKE OFF WITH A VERY HARD JOLT. THIS WOULD HAPPEN OFF AND ON ESPECIALLY IF I WAS IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC OR CAME TO A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT. THE CAR WOULD STALL BEFORE TAKING OFF. I TOOK IT TO THE DELEARSHIP AND THEY KEPT IT FOR THREE DAYS AND SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING. THIS IS WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WAS UNDER WARRANTY UP TO 120,000 MILES. THEY SAID THE CAR WOULD HAVE TO DO IT WHILE IN THER SHOP OR THEY COULD DO NOTHING. I JUST FOUND IT SO HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE CAR SHOWED NO SIGNES OF DOING ANYTHING THAT I DESCRIBED WHILE THEY HAD IT AND DROVE IT FOR THREE DAYS. WELL OF COURSE I GOT THE CAR BACK AND IT WAS STILL DOING THE SAME THING. I TOOK IT BACK TO THEM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION AND THE REPAIR ON IT ALONE WAS GOING TO COST ME 3600.00 ALL BY ITSELF. THE CAR WAS DOING THE VERY SAME THING WHEN I TOOK IT IN TO THEM THE FIRST TIME BUT SURPRISINGLY AFTER THE WARRANTY WAS OFF THEY ALL OF A SUDDEN FOUND THE PROBLEM. SOMEBODY REALLY NEEDS TO LOOK INTO ALL OF THESE COMPLAINTS AND GET THESE SITUATIONS UNDER WARRANTY SO THAT THESE CARS CAN BE FIXED PROPERLY. ITS NOT FAIR TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT A PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN FIXED UNDER WARRANTY TO TAKE IT BACK TO THEM FOR THE EXACT SAME THING AND THEY TELL YOU THAT THE REPAIR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND YOU NOW HAVE TO PAY FOR IT.
FUEL DOOR LOCKS AND DOES NOT OPEN,ACTUATORS DEFECTIVE 2003 NISSAN MURANO. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 NISSAN MURANO. THE CONTACT NOTICED TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKING FROM THE TRANSFER CASE. HE HAD NOT NOTICED ANY ISSUES, SUCH AS DIFFICULTY SHIFTING. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE INNER SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER WHO STARTED A CASE AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD GET BACK TO HIM WITH THE RESOLUTION. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 49,700 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 49,000. UPDATED 11/12/08 *BF UPDATED 11/13/08. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 NISSAN MURANO. THE CONTACT TOOK HER VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE SEALS FAILED AND CAUSED OIL TO LEAK. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER REPAIRED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE FAILED. THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY $3,100 FOR THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, BUT HAS NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000. UPDATED 07/14/09. *LJ THE INNER SEALS WERE LEAKING. UPDATED 07/15/09.*JB
PREVIOUSLY IN LOVE WITH MY 2003 NISSAN MURANO, WITHIN THE LAST 4 MONTHS (100,000 MILES) I HAVE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS. THROTTLE BODY, CV BOOTS, AXLE SEALS, FRONT AND BACK MOTOR MOUNTS, RADIATOR, AND MOST RECENTLY NEEDS A 4,000 TRANSMISSION REPAIR. JUST AS OTHERS HAVE REPORTED, MY CAR GETS TO THE POINT WHERE IT WILL NOT ACCELERATE, EVEN IF I PUSH THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR, THEN IT SUDDENLY LUNGES FORWARD. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED AND REFUSE TO SPEND ANOTHER DOLLAR ON THIS CAR, WHICH IS FALLING APART AT AN EXPONENTIAL SPEED. THIS IS ONLY A 6YEAR OLD CAR! *TR
PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE WITH 20,000 MILES ON IT, KEPT WELL MAINTAINED, DROVE 90% HIGHWAY MILES MOSTLY COMMUTING TO CARE FOR ELDERLY PERSON. FRONT STRUTS LEAKED AND FAILED WITHOUT WARNING AT APPROX 60,000 MILES, THEN HAD LOSS OF POWER, TRANSMISSION/DRIVESHAFT BEGAN "HOWLING NOISE" AND WE COULD SMELL FAINT OIL SMELL, TOOK TO DEALER WERE TOLD IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY WHICH THEY FIXED UNDER WARRANTY, THAT THEY COULD DETECT NO OIL SMELL OR SOURCE FOR SAME, AND THAT CVT HOWL WAS JUST THE NORMAL SOUNDS OF THAT TYPE OF TRANSMISSION. WE SPECIFICALLY ASKED WHETHER THERE ARE ANY KNOWN PROBLEMS OR FAILURES WITH DRIVETRAIN ASSEMBLE COMPONENTS, BECAUSE WE HEARD OF MANY OTHER STRUT FAILURES BY MURANO OWNERS AFTER OUR STRUTS FAILED PREMATURELY. WE WERE TOLD THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF ANY TROUBLE, NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. THE HOWL NEVER WENT AWAY, AND THE OIL SMELL CAME AND WENT. SEPT. 4, WE PULLED OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY DROVE ABOUT 50 YARDS DOWN THE STREET AND HEAR A HORRIBLE THUMPING NOISE, LIKE A FLAT DRIVE, WE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AND CHECKED, NO FLAT TIRE. WE STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND DROVE A FEW FEET, SAME NOISE. WE PARKED THE CAR AND HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER. WE ARE TOLD THE TRANSFER CASE "GRENADED" THAT WE MUST HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT HARD (WE WERE GOING ABOUT 10 MPH), THAT IT WOULD BE $4000 TO REPAIR! THE TECH ASKED IF WE HAD BEEN HEARING ANY UNUSUAL NOISES BEFORE THE FAILURE, WE TOLD HIM WE HAD, AND WE HAD REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER WHEN IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THEY REFUSED TO HELP WITH THE REPAIR COSTS. I CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AND SPENT 6 HOURS READING THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR TRANSFER CASE FAILURE STORIES ON MURANOS WITH ALL LEVELS OF MILEAGE ON THEM, MANY HAD BEEN TOLD, LIKE WE WERE, THAT WARNING SIGNS WERE NOTHING WHEN THEIR VEHICLES WERE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THE DEALER ALSO TRIED TO CHARGE US $2800.00 FOR THE PART, WHICH WE FOUND FOR $1518.00 FROM ANOTHER NISSAN DEALER. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM, HAS CAUSED VEHICLES TO STOP IN TRAFFIC AND SHOULD BE A RECALL DEFECT. THANK YOU *TR
MY 2003 NISSAN MURANO HAS TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE OF HOURS ON HIGHWAY, IT WILL NOT PULL UP A HILL, PASS A VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY IF I PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR HARD, IT JERKS, SLOWS DOWN AND ALMOST STOPS. IT ONLY DOES THIS WHEN WARM/HOT. IT WON'T DO IT WHEN COLD, SO THE NISSAN DEALER CAN NOT SEE THE PROBLEM. IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE WITH AGE. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION. I DARE NOT LET ANYONE DRIVE IT IN THE FAMILY EXCEPT ME. NISSAN SHOULD REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. IT IS OBVIOUSLY A COMMON DEFECT FROM WHAT I READ ON THE INTERNET. *TR
TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH 2003 NISSAN MURANOS. VERY WIDESPREAD. CAR NEEDS NEW VALVE BODY AND POSSIBLY NEW TRANSMISSION. UP TO $7000 TO FIX CARS THAT MAY ONLY BE WORTH TWICE THAT. *TR
WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 75MPH (NORMAL SPEED FOR INTERSTATE TRAVEL IN MONTANA) WHEN OUR MURANO STARTED RUN AT 4000 RPM ABNORMALLY. IT RAN AT THIS RATE FOR AWHILE THEN IT FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION WAS LOOSING POWER AND I HAD TO TAKE IT OFF CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE IT COULDN'T KEEP UP AND MAINTAIN CONSTANT SPEED. VEHICLE START TO JUMP IN SPEED AND THEN LOOSE POWER AND CONTINUED TO DO THIS UNTIL I PULLED THE VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY. WHEN I HAD STOPPED I TRIED ACCELERATING TO GET BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY WITH NO SUCCESS. I HAD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND HAD NO POWER. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF/ON AND HAD SLIGHT ACCELERATION ENOUGH TO PULL BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY BUT ALMOST GOT HIT BECAUSE TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T ACCELERATE PROPERLY AND FAST ENOUGH. TOOK MURANO BACK TO DEALER TO CHECK OUT ENGINE/TRANSMISSION AND THEY SAID AFTER CONDUCTING DIAGNOSTIC IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I SAID THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS AROUND 65,000 MILES I'VE NEVER HEARD OF A 5 YEAR OLD CAR NEEDING A NEW TRANSMISSION. WHAT'S WORSE THEY SAID IS THE TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE ORDERED DIRECTLY FROM NISSAN AND COST $4200! TOTAL COST FOR THE REPAIR WOULD BE $5600!!! THIS IS NO SMALL REPAIR PROBLEM! A 2003 VEHICLE WITH ONLY 65K MILES ON IT SHOULD NOT NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION!!! NISSAN SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SUCH A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT THAT HAD THE POTENTIAL TO KILL MY FAMILY ON THAT HIGHWAY IF ALL POWER HAD BEEN LOST SUDDENLY CRUISING AT 75MPH IN TRAFFIC!!!!! *TR
MY MURANO HAS A LOSS OF POWER AFTER SITTING IN TRAFFIC. AFTER STOPPED IN TRAFFIC, I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR DOESN'T MOVE FOR ABOUT 6 OR 7 SECONDS. THEN IT TAKES OFF QUICKLY. THIS DANGEROUS BECAUSE SOMEONE MAY HIT ME FROM BEHIND WHEN THE LIGHT TURNS GREEN AND THE MURANO DOESN'T GO. NISSAN DEALER SAYS THE CAR DOESN'T SHOW ANY FAILURE CODES, BUT THINKS THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS REPLACING. 84,000 MILES. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 NISSAN MURANO. THE CONTACT STATED SHE LOOSES POWER WHEN YOU SHE IS SITTING STILL. WHEN SHE ACCELERATES THE GAS PEDAL DOES NOT MOVE. THE SUDDENLY IT SURGES AND TAKES OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE FAILURE OCCURRED FROM A NEW VALVE PROBLEM WHICH RELATES TO THE TRANSMISSION AND THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE VALVE. THIS HAS BEEN A CONTINUOUS FAILURE FOR OVER A YEAR. THE MANUFACTURE WAS NOTIFIED THAT HER VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE IS NO RECALL THAT INCLUDES HER VIN NUMBER. THAT FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 121,700. BL
WHILE DRIVING ON BUSY ROAD, BRAKE LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON. AT THE SAME TIME, THE CAR LOST POWER (THOUGH IT DID NOT STALL). WHEN GIVING IT THROTTLE, THE ENGINE REFUSED TO SPEED UP. IT WAS LIKE BEING IN A "FAIL SAFE" MODE, LIKE WHEN SPEED SENSORS GO OUT. COULD NOT SAFELY PULL OVER OR DRIVE...MANAGED TO GET TO SIDE OF ROAD AND CALL FOR A TOW. NISSAN DEALER SAID IT WAS THE ALTERNATOR. THEY HAD ALREADY REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR UNDER A RECALL. *TR

HAD IT INTO DEALER WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. CAR IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY, PROBLEM IS WORSE. NOW THEY SAY IT IS VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY OF NISSAN CVT TRANSMISSION. COST IS $2100 FOR REPAIR. *TR
AT ABOUT 61,000 MILES, MY 2003 MURANO (BOUGHT NEW IN 2004) BEGAN HESITATING WHEN I ACCELERATE FROM A STOP IN TRAFFIC. THIS OCCURS EVERYTIME I'M IN STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES. WHEN I PRESS ON THE GAS, THE CAR DOESN'T MOVE AND THEN A FEW SECONDS LATER SURGES. IT'S VERY SCARY, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO TURN LEFT IN TRAFFIC. VERY DANGEROUS. I'VE SEEN MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. I HAVE NOT YET BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP. *TR
THE FAILURE OF THE DRIVERS SEAT FRAME ON MY 2003 NISSAN MURANO. ALTHOUGH THIS FAILURE DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT, IT COULD CERTAINLY COULD HAVE CAUSED ONE. THE LEFT REAR SUPPORT STRUCTURE ON THE LOWER SEAT FRAME GAVE WAY SUDDENLY CAUSING THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SEAT TO DROP ABOUT 8 INCHES. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE SUDDEN SHIFT IN POSITION AND LOSS OF BALANCE COULD HAVE LED TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
MY 2003 MURANO HAS BEEN SLOWING TO 35 - 40 MPH ON THE FREEWAY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAY I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION FOR $5,500. MY CAR HAS 61,000 MILES ON IT. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS VEHICLE. RATHER THAN PAY THIS, I AM FORCED TO TRADE IT IN FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE WHICH WILL PUT ME UPSIDE DOWN. *TR

FRONT DRIVERS SEAT WAS LOSE ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO, DEALER LOOKED AT IT AND TOLD ME THAT THE ENTIRE SEAT ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR $1100. I CALLED NISSAN AS THE CAR WAS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY AND NISSAN WOULD NOT COVERED SEAT REPLACEMENT. RECENTLY THE ENTIRE SEAT FRAME IS DAMAGED/CRACKED. THUS CAUSING THE SEAT TO SIT INCORRECTLY. THIS FINALLY CRACKED FULLY WHILE DRIVING. WHICH STARTLED ME INITIALLY AS THE CAR WAS MOVING AND IT FELT AS IF I FELL OUT OF MY SEAT. *TR
2003 NISSAN MURANO-STALLING OUT AND BARELY GOING-TOOK TO LOCAL MEC. AND HE REPLACED MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR @ APPROXIMATE 83,227MILES. THIS PROBLEM STARTED AFTER THE MURANO WAS IN THE GRAY DANIELS NISSAN SHOP HERE IN JACKSON,MS FOR AIR FILTER AND BRAKE WORK. NO HELP FROM THEM ; JUST MY PROBLEM. WELL I WILL VOICE MY THOUGHTS TO EVERYONE ON NOT BUYING A NISSAN. EDMONDS HAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM . JUST ANOTHER TAKE YOUR MONEY WITH NO SERVICE. WKP *TR
MY 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING MY 03 NISSAN MURANO TO SCHOOL WHEN SHE STOPPED TO PAY A TOLL. WHEN SHE TRIED TO TAKE OFF AGAIN THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. ONCE THE CAR GOT TO 4000 RPM'S IT TOOK OFF AGAIN. THE PROBLEM STOPPED OCCURRING FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. AFTER THAT IT STARTED TO HAPPEN FREQUENTLY. AFTER TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALER I WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT SURE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT BECAUSE A LOT OF DIFFERENT CODES WERE COMING UP. EVENTUALLY I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO GET A WHOLE NEW CVT TRANSMISSION. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY UNSAFE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED MY CHILD TO HAVE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE CAUSED HER , HER LIFE. THE OLD TRANSMISSION IS NOT AVAILABLE BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP I BROUGHT IT TO TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE GOING TO REPAIR IT AND RE SELL IT! I THINK THAT GIVING THE TRANSMISSION TO ANYONE IS A VERY DANGEROUS IDEA. *TR

THIS APPARENTLY IS HAPPENING TO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF MURANO OWNERS AROUND THE SAME MILEAGE. IT IS A WONDER THAT NISSAN ENDS THE WARRANTY AT 60,000 MILES. IN ALL OF THESE SITUATIONS I HAVE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH THAT THE OTHER DRIVERS WERE OBSERVANT AND DIDN'T HIT ME. I HAVE NOW NOTICED THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AT ANY TYPE OF STOP AND GO TRAFFIC SITUATION. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO COME AND GO. IT WON'T HAPPEN FOR DAYS OR WEEKS. THEN IT'LL DO THE SLOW AND JERK EVERY DAY AT EVERY STOP EVEN IF I DO TURN IT OFF AND RESTART. NISSANUSA SAYS THE DEALERSHIP WAS CORRECT IN NOT RETURNING THE CAR WITHOUT COMPLETING THE REPAIR, BUT THEY DO NOT CONSIDER THE REPAIR COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AS A COVERED COMPONENT, NOR A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. WHILE THE CAR HAS 77K MILES, THEY ARE PRIMARILY HIGHWAY MILES DRIVEN BY ME. I CAN COUNT ON MY TWO HANDS THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE SEAT HAS BEEN ADJUSTED. THE DEALERSHIP SAID A PIECE OF METAL IN THE SEAT ADJUSTER BROKE AND IT WOULD SOON PUNCTURE THE SEAT AND POSSIBLY CAUSE THE SEAT TO MALFUNCTION. DOESN'T THIS SOUND LIKE METAL FATIGUE? *TR
