NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I am writing regarding the defective condition of the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder (approx. 16,431 miles) purchased on Nov 10, 2025. With the onset of spring, the A/C system has failed, blowing only ambient air. This aligns with known manufacturer defects: Jump Tube Defect (PC899/PC939): Faulty seals causing refrigerant leaks. A/C Amplifier (NTB23-033A): Irregular airflow and spontaneous surges. Notably, I reported HVAC and mechanical concerns within the 90-day warranty period. On Dec 20, 2025, I notified the dealership of whistling sounds/airflow bursts and clicking noises in the steering system. Although technician dismissed these as "normal" at the time, reporting them within the warranty period preserves my right to repair. While previous issues (loose bolts/chassis vibration) were resolved, the HVAC irregularities persist. On April 18, 2026, I returned to report the A/C failure and was denied a complimentary diagnostic, despite the vehicle being sold in a defective condition. Requested Actions: Full Diagnostic: A comprehensive, no-cost inspection of the entire HVAC system. Complete Repair: Replacement of the condenser, jump tube, seals, A/C amplifier, and related components under dealer responsibility/manufacturer goodwill. System Service: Full evacuation and recharge of refrigerant to manufacturer specs. Confirmation that the vehicle is returned in fully functional and safe condition at no cost due It was reportes during warranty period.
While driving down the road or a smooth road 60 mile an hour 60° weather, it sound like a bomb went off inside my car after walking around my car I saw nothing wrong and then before I got in I noticed something on top of the car and it was my panoramic window blown up
My 2022 Nissan Pathfinder was purchased new and now has 27150 miles. On April 9 2026, I was having my summer tires installed and was told by the tire shop that the rear brakes were worn out and needed replacement. I contacted the Nissan dealership who quoted a cost of $570 for brake replacement. There was no warning lamps or other symptoms but there is only 3mm of brake pad left. Per the dealership, at 2mm the pads will begin grinding on the rotors. The vehicle has not been used to tow or used off road and the brake pads should last much longer then 27K miles. They, or the brake system components installed by Nissan, are obviously defective.
Vehicle has 65k miles on it and has already been through 2 sets going on 3 of brakes there has been maybe 6k miles put on it and the brakes are going and possibly rotors it feels like the brakes aren't fully releasing. I've seen alot of people complaing so I know its just not my imagination.it makes the vehicle seem like it takes longer to stop
I am submitting this complaint to report a serious safety issue involving the airbag system in my vehicle. The airbag warning light has illuminated on the dashboard, and I also received a notification indicating that the airbag system may not function properly in the event of a crash. This creates a significant safety risk, as the airbags may fail to deploy when needed. I contacted an authorized Nissan dealership regarding this issue. The dealership informed me that they have received similar complaints from multiple vehicles of the same generation as mine. However, they advised me to wait for a potential recall rather than proceed with immediate diagnostic and repair, stating that repairs at this time would be very expensive despite the vehicle being only three years old. Given the critical safety function of airbags, this situation is extremely concerning. A potential failure of the airbag system could result in serious injury or death in the event of an accident. I am requesting that this issue be investigated promptly to determine whether a defect exists that warrants a safety recall. It appears this may be a broader issue affecting multiple vehicles, not an isolated incident
⸻ My 2022 Nissan Pathfinder experienced a catastrophic engine failure at approximately 70,000 miles. The vehicle suddenly developed severe engine knocking and required a complete engine replacement. There were no engine warning lights or oil pressure warning lights prior to the failure. The vehicle had been maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals, including oil changes using full synthetic oil. The Nissan maintenance system indicates oil changes at approximately 10,000 mile intervals. Because there were no warning indicators prior to the failure, the issue occurred without any notice to the driver. A sudden engine failure without warning could present a potential safety risk if it occurred while driving in traffic or at highway speeds. The repair required a full engine replacement at a cost exceeding 8,000. The vehicle was just slightly outside the manufacturer’s powertrain warranty at the time of failure. Given the relatively low mileage and lack of warning indicators before the engine failure, I am submitting this complaint so the issue can be documented and evaluated for potential safety concerns or patterns of engine failure in this vehicle model.
Hi as I was driving my car on a clear road no cars near my car all of a sudden my sunroof exploded as if it was shot my a military tank we panicked thankfully tried to maintain calm and it didn’t hurt my children and thankfully no car was around as the sound did put us at panick mode which could have resulted in a car crash from the cause of the incident
Front collision sensor has failed, on a vehicle that had 40,000 miles. This keeps the adaptive cruise being able to be used as well as automatic emergency braking.
While driving at a moderate speed of 65 mph, the back portion of my panoramic sunroof spontaneously shattered. There was a very loud noises followed by rattling of the glass on the sun roof cover. I pulled over immediately and pulled the sunroof cover half way back to see a hole the size of a softball through the sun roof. There is no debris that was flying in the air, on the road, or any signs of an object hitting my car. On inspection there was no body damage from my car and when i looked into the hole of the sunroof there was no object within it. There was also no vehicles directly in front of me, only a vehicle 150 feet in front. The weather was cloudy, but no rain or wind.
First Incident- volume kept rising on its own. Would turn it down, it would go right back up. Would turn the radio off, it would turn on by itself and would keep rising until full blast. Vehicle was parked, came back from work, turned vehicle on and the volume was fine on it. Second Incident- (this has happened twice) about a month after the volume incident. This time the vehicle would accelerate by itself. No cruise control was on, vehicle would keep going faster and faster. First time this happened the vehicle needed to be towed, cops were involved. I finally was able to stop the vehicle at a red light (where it eventually broke down and would not start). Extended warranty covered the tow. There was no check engine light on. Replaced the battery as I was told the errors were pointing back to low voltage. After battery was replaced, maybe three weeks later the vehicle did the same thing on the highway again. Car speed kept increasing on its own, no cruise control or pedal input. Vehicle kept speeding. I took this vehicle to Moon Township, PA Nissan Cochran dealership and they could not replicate the issue. I have video proof the first time this happened where the vehicle kept increasing in speed without pedal input. I have two kids under the age of [XXX] , This is an unsafe vehicle and it has lost my trust completely. The extended warranty company for this vehicle said they can’t do anything since the dealership says no check engine light is on. Third incident- got into vehicle, turned the vehicle on and the parking brake would not release. The parking brake was never applied in the first place so I have no clue how or why it was on when I turned the vehicle on. I just recently called the dealership on this issue now (Moon Township, Nissan Cochran) and will see what they say. Again, no check engine light is present. I am at a loss on this vehicle. 2022 with only 45k miles on it and have never experienced this many issues with a vehicle before! It is unsafe. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I also have noticed the gurgling sound from the passenger's side when raining and/or when I have had my vehicle washed, and as of this morning 12/02/2025, I have a leak inside the cabin of my vehicle from the middle upper console and over the passenger side window. I am taking it to a windshield repair place to be inspected to see if it is an issue with the windshield or the moonroof. I will then be taking it to the Nissan dealer.
While driving at normal speed, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted itself into neutral twice without any driver input. During both incidents, the vehicle suddenly lost propulsion in traffic, creating a safety risk for the occupants and surrounding vehicles. Prior to and after these events, the vehicle displayed a “SERVICE A/T” message and a check engine warning light. The vehicle has been inspected by a dealership. They identified an engine-related concern (including a failed mass air flow sensor) and an electrical concern requiring attention. However, the dealership reported that they were unable to duplicate or diagnose the unintended shift into neutral, and the cause of the neutral engagement remains unknown. This issue has occurred more than once shortly after purchase of the vehicle. The warning lights and messages have been reproduced by the dealer, but the loss-of-drive event has not. The unresolved transmission or powertrain malfunction poses an ongoing safety concern.
On 10/12/25, while driving on the interstate, the sunroof of our 2022 Nissan Pathfinder suddenly exploded. As of today (10/13/2025), the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. When the sunroof failed, the interior roof shade was closed. I was driving at interstate speeds with my wife and children in the vehicle. The sound of the sunroof exploding was very loud and came without warning, startling all of us - luckily, I managed to keep control of the vehicle. We could hear shards of glass bouncing around above us - had the roof shade been open, we would have had a large amount of sharp glass shards fall on us. This event happened yesterday (10/12/25), and I will be calling our dealer today (10/13/25) to confirm the issue - I have provided a photo of the sunroof, taken after we safely left the interstate. As of today (10/13/25), the vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives; it has been inspected by me and my wife. There were no obvious signs of anything striking the sunroof: the only loud noise was the glass shattering, and there was no apparent damage to the fabric of the interior roof shade (which was closed when the sunroof exploded). The interstate was clear of debris when the incident took place and there were no indications of rocks, gravel, etc. Before the sunroof exploded, there were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.
Airbag light just came on today 10/2/25 Electronic emissions control will turn on and off the same day every few months.
The rear brakes are failing at unusually low miles with no indicator on the dashboard that they needed service. Basically we just started hearing a grinding noise. The Nissan dealer says this is normal for that vehicle, but I have never seen brakes begin to fail this soon under normal driving conditions and no indicators.
The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that after stopping at a gas station, the vehicle was restarted but stalled. There several unknown warning lights flashing on the instrument cluster. The vehicle was unable to be restarted and was towed to a local dealer. The contact stated during the failure the transmission was in drive(D) and could not be shifted to park(P) or neutral(N). The dealer recharged the 12-Volt battery and had difficulty diagnosing the failure. The dealer determined that the transmission control module needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the vehicle was losing motive power while driving. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was stopped, turned off and restarted to regain normal operation. The contact stated that the failure had occurred several times. The failure recently recurred with several unknown warning lights illuminated and the vehicle was towed to the same dealer. The contact became aware that in March 2024 another dealer replaced the fuel pump for a previous vehicle owner. The dealer had not yet diagnosed or repaired the vehicle. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,607.
The vehicle has just under 20,000 miles and when reversing is getting a high pitched squeak. There are a ton of online forums where other owners of a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder are stating they're being told that the rear brake pads are literally worn down to metal while the front brakes are perfectly fine. This is clearly a defect of some sort where the brake system should not be malfunctioning like this.
Car caught fire when off and parked.
The vehicle AC has stopped working. This is the ongoing problem in which can cause a fire anytime a leak occurs or a failed AC compressor without anybody knowing can cause a fire oppose a threaten Safety to the community.
Panoramic moonroof shattered without warning. No impact. This is the second time this has occurred—first in October 2022, now again in July 2025. Glass exploded outward, creating a severe safety hazard
Very excessive brake wear causing numerous replacement of pads and warping rotors.
Front brake calipers get hot and started smoking. During simple highway travel No hard bracing and cruise control set. I’m not sure if the issue is with the two front calipers themselves or with the master cylinder or some other components that would cause both front brake calipers do this at the same time!
For the past couple of months we noticed the car is swaying to one side when it accelerates. We took the car for an alignment and the problem persists. The car is now swaying aggressively to one side when driving at higher speeds. This occurs while driving in the highways. We have to be extra cautious because it can hit another car driving in the next lane. We took the car to the Weston AutoNation dealer repairs and they informed the car needs to repair tie rods and control arms. The car has never been in an accident. The car has less than 35,000 miles.
I have 44K miles and had to replace my rear brakes 4 times. I paid for them twice and Nissan covered the cost the first time when they ran out at 7K miles and the last time the replaced the rear brakes and rotors. There is something seriously wrong with the rear brake being undersized. I had a 2015 Pathfinder and on average got 41K per brake set.
My vehicle has experienced recurring water intrusion due to a clogged sunroof drain, causing significant moisture buildup, mold growth, and persistent odors inside the cabin. I purchased the vehicle in February 2024 and brought it in for this issue three times during the warranty period a few months later, where fixes were proposed each time. The fourth visit, five months past the warranty period in May 2025, still revolves around the same poor sunroof drainage system, which the dealership claims works fine, and they will perform repairs but refuse to cover them under warranty, offering only to clear the drain lines without a more in-depth repair or remediation for the mold and odor.
Gas Pedal broke completely off while accelerating to merge. Took it to the dealership and they ordered a new gas pedal and made the repair. There was no prior warning of anything wrong. This could have caused us to have a wreck when we were accelerating to merge and all of the sudden the gas pedal just busted off and the car dramatically slows down. Definitely a safety issue.
Transmission started slipping when I was getting on the Interstate. It was revving very loud but car would not move. I almost got hit from behind. This car is not even 3 years old. I am very concerned for my safety. I should still be in warranty for this issue.
The engine would shift out of drive into neutral while driving on the road. It one time shifted into park while pulling out of my driveway and left me stuck in the middle of the road for several seconds before it would allow me to shift back to drive. This has been continuous throughout. I reported to Nissan with no action from them. Sunroof leaks At 93,000 miles and regular maintenance (at home) the engine seized and they are saying sludge. I know it has been maintained so there has to be a separate cause. We had routine maintenance, the report from Nissan all along provided no engine issues or no oil pressure issues.
The rear brake pads as well as the rear brake caliber on these model vehicles and brakes keeps going bad extremely fast. This car is only 2 1/2 years old and I’ve already had to spend $1100 on parts for brake calibers. It is a known fact that the manufacturer Does not have the parts in stock. They are back order for 2 to 3 weeks. This is extreme safety issue and can prevent for cars from operating and stopping safely it’s smoothly I’ve had to replace my rear brake pad four times within a year.
vehicle shut down mid intersection turn. Had to be towed away to the dealership. 5 days later after having "issues" with diagnosing they said it has oil sludge and the engine seized due to this. The vehicle has been maintained and has less than 100,000 miles. I find this very concerning and believe there is an issue with the quality of the engine
At 42,000 my rear breaks failed. Needing to replace all components of my rear breaks. Now there is a national back order on parts which shouldn’t be a problem for this new of a vehicle.
Since purchasing this vehicle new i have had several issues : - While driving on the highway the engine will switch into neutral -One time while pulling out of my drive way I got stuck in the middle of the road because it placed me in park for no known reason. - Sunroof Leaks, - Most recently at 93,000 miles my engine failed and I needed a full engine replacement. They didnt cover this replacement and left it in me to pay for the full replacement. (over $10K) - The Breaks needed to be fully replaced before $20,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that the seat belt alert system failed to operate as needed. The contact stated that even though all the occupants in the vehicle were wearing their seat belts, the system indicated that the seat belts were not in use, causing an audible warning chime to sound throughout the driving trip. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was purchased; Dimmitt Chevrolet (25485 US Hwy 19 N, Clearwater, FL 33763), and the contact was informed that the repair would not be covered under the warranty purchased by the contact through the dealer and was provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was then taken to another dealer; Crown Nissan (5151 34th St N, St. Petersburg, FL 33714); where a diagnostic test was performed on the vehicle, and it was believed that the failure might have started after removing the third-row seat. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer unrepaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 32,400.
I was driving and all of a sudden my car flipped into neutral mid drive. I couldn’t put it in park. I couldn’t put it in drive and I couldn’t put it in reverse. I had to sit on the road with my foot on the pedal until someone could tow it. My kids and were stuck in the dark on dangerous corner of a windy road. This is a serious safety deficit. We are still covered under warranty. We got it home and turned it off. Then we turned the car back on and we were able to put it in gear and park it, but the check engine light stayed on. The next day when I turned it on to take it to the dealership, the check engine light was off. The technician took it for a test drive and it did the same thing to him. The technician can’t figure out what is wrong or why it’s doing what it is doing, but that it is unsafe to drive.
Sunroof leak- causing issues throughout the car. Mold which is very serious and dangerous. This HAS to be addressed.
The front passenger seat in my 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is too low making the seat uncomfortable to sit in. Nissan told me to call the safety board to start a recall.
Heated seats appear to be on, but do not heat up. The door lock sensors on the exterior door handles do not work consistently.
On Sunday September 8 2024 at 3:01 pm while driving my car down the road my car suddenly started flashing the Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection system warning light. The warning started flashing then the engine shut down. The engine shut down for about five minutes then I was able to start it again. But My check engine light was on. My Nissan Connect sent me a message via email that my "PATHFINDER's engine may have an emission control system malfunction." I moved the car from the middle of the street to a parking lot and initially called for a tow truck. However, after sitting in the car for about 40 minutes waiting for a tow truck I started the vehicle again and it started and the check engine light was off. I subsequently took my vehicle to two Nissan dealerships and they could not find an issue or a resolution to the problem. Today, November 17 2023, at 4:23pm I was on my way home driving west and my car began to flash the same indications that I received during the initial incident. The common thread between both incidences was that I was driving west during dusk and the sun was shining brightly in my direction. I believe that the brightness of the sun is causing the AEB system to malfunction and can cause the vehicle to shut down while driving. This is definitely a hazard if driving.
My sunroof exploded going down the road, no object hit it.
My car jerks violently into first gear often. Slow acceleration. Exclamation mark inside a triangle warning light came on and my car wouldn't accelerate over tha 2 miles per hrs. When in park or at a stop light it idles roughly. Rear brakes have been prematurely expired. I have since replaced them
My 2022 Pathfinder had 34,725 miles on it when I left for the grocery store, on the way while driving on the highway I got an alert on my dash saying "check shift level position", which that seemed normal & fine, and vehicle was still driving normally at this point. That alert then went away as I was driving a moment or two later ( however I did get a photo of it). A very few moments later, I was driving along and the vehicle suddenly shifted into N(eutral)! I pulled over, shifted into park, turned off the car, restarted it, and the check engine light was on. However I shifted the car into D(rive) and proceeded to try to get back home, car seemed to be driving normally, but then no, it began again, the car suddenly shifted into N again as I was driving. I tried pulling over and restarting the vehicle again, but the same thing happened again. I decided to have my passenger take a video of our drive home so that it could be easily shown to the dealer what was happening, that way there would be no question of if the dealer could replicate the issue or not. During our aprox 6:07 minute trip home, it happened another 5 times! Once I was home I found that I had a email from MyNissan saying that there may possibly be an issue with my vehicle emmisions system. My husband has a code reader and he plugged into it and it showed a code of P0742, which is ("torque converter clutch circuit stuck on"). So the next morning 10/01/24 I called my dealership and spoke to service and let them know what was going on and that it needed to come in, I explained however that I would not be loaded my 3 kids in the car and making that hour + trip up there driving the car as this is a HUGE safety hazard. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. The next day the dealer did reach out to me and tell me they plugged into it, saw the P0742 code, but "didn't know what to do with that", so they were calling the Nissan "TechLine".
While driving my son to school, traffic began slowing and then accelerating in front of me. I was driving approximately 40 mph when I took my foot off the accelerator to slow down. Before I had a chance to press the brake, the vehicle shifted into neutral on it own without the shift level being touch and a steady Malfunction Indicator Light came on. At this point the traffic began speeding up and I was unable to accelerate until I manually shifted the vehicle back into drive.
The rear breaks wore off really fast at around 10,000 miles as well as all the tires. It was inspected and the mechanic said that it’s normal for the breaks in these cars to wear off quickly. I never recieved any warning lamps about the breaks needing to be changed.
The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that while the wife was driving approximately 60 MPH and attempting the stop, the braking system malfunctioned and the vehicle did not stop or reduce speed while the brake pedal was being pressed causing the vehicle to crash into the rear of a second vehicle. During the crash, the collision avoidance system did not activate and the air bag did not deploy. No injuries were reported. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 38,600.
The car ac doesn't work after 2 years, drivers side heated seats not working, computer for stereo and car will randomly shut down
My Toddler was seated (in the car seat that was buckled into ) the second row bucket seat. While driving the vehicle we hit a bump in the road which then launched the back passenger seat up and forward pinning my child between the two seats. His face smashed into the front passenger seat headrest which caused forced injury to his head. The EZ seat button could not have been reached by my child due to them being in a car seat. This has been reported to the manufacture of Nissan. There are no warnings for this feature.
Rear brakes on Nissan Pathfinder are wearing unusually fast resulting in brakes failing and vehicle failing to stop. I have now had to pay to replace the rear brakes twice in less than 30k miles. Brakes should last 30-50k miles. Also I have not had to replace the front brakes once yet.
the car is burning through brakes first brakes was repaired under warranty from nissan at 15k miles now the car needed
On numerous occasions while cruising at highway speeds ability to accelerate disengages. There is no ability to accelerate and RPMs drop, car loses speed until transmission and acceleration re-engages. When the car does this you are unable to shift gears to attempt to engage and the vehicle still shows as though it is in drive. Vehicle has gone to dealer service numerous times and they are unable to replicate the issue and allege that there are no “codes” in the computer. They are reluctant to dive deeper into the issue despite the fact that this is a safety issue.
It appears the rear brake pads degrade over a short amount of usage. My vehicle currently has approximately 28,000 miles and I have had to replace the rear pads twice. Once at 13k miles and another at 27,500 miles. Car vibrates violently upon heavy braking. This seems to be a known issue with the manufacturer; however, no recalls have been issued.
