I entered 14 freeway by sierra hwy entrance, as soon as I got in the fwy and left the pedal gas to slow down to get into traffic my van lost power and the shut off complete, i was very fortunate that it happened at the entrance and the cars behind me were able to stop on time and nobody got hurt, also today as soon I exit the cvs store get in into traffic, 1 minute after the van lost power and got stuck in traffic, this is very scary for me and my kids, my mechanics are not able to find the problem, please help
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 NISSAN QUEST. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
ONCE STARTED, THE ENGINE MAKES A TICKING SOUND. OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS, THERE HAVE BEEN OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE WILL RAPIDLY DECELERATE, ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND NOT BEGIN ACCELERATING ADEQUATELY UNTIL IT IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE PROBLEM HAS ESCALATED TO COMPLETELY STALLING AND THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES. AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE WILL RESTART, BUT THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY. A LOCAL MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE TIMING CHAINS NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH, I HAVE DISCOVERED CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS IN SOME STATES FOR PREMATURE FAILURE OF TIMING CHAINS ON 2004-2009 NISSAN QUEST, AMONG OTHER MODELS.
WHILE DRIVING IN THE FREEWAY, THE ENGINE SUDENLY STALLED, PULLED OVER AND TRIED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND ENGINE STARTED AGAIN, AFTER THAT THE STALL COTINUES HAPPENING WITH NO SIMPTOMS AT ALL, IT HAPPENS AT ANY TIME AND ANY CONDITION; DURING TRAFFIC DRIVING OR DURING HIGH SPEED DRIVING, DAY OR NIGHT. REALLY DANGEROUS BECAUSE SOME TIMES OTHER DRIVERS HAVE PROBLEMS TO AVOID CRASH WITH MY VAN THAT DOES NOT START AND CAN NOT BE MOVED AWAY. ALL KIND OF REVIEWS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED AND NO SUCCESS TO FIX THIS ISSUE. I HAVE READ THIS IS A VERY FREQUENT FAILURE FOR NISSAN QUEST VEHICLES; CAN YOU DO ANYTHING TO ASK NISSAN FOR A SOLUTION? 2004 NISSAN QUEST. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO A FAULTY DESIGN/ INSTALLATION OF ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE ECM WAS INSTALLED DIRECTLY UNDER THE WINDSHIELD PLASTIC COWL. THE OPEN MESH COWL WOULD DRAIN ALL THE WATER DIRECTLY ONTO THE ECM. IT WAS HOW WATER DRIPPED ON THE ECM'S ENCLOSURE, THAT CAUSED THE CORROSION PREMATURELY. THE REPAIRMAN EVEN DECIDED NOT TO INSTALL THE REPLACEMENT IN ITS ORIGINAL BRACKET TO AVOID ACCUMULATING MOISTURE.
QUEST WILL JERK EXTREMELY HARD AFTER SLOWING DOWN OR LETTING OF ON THE GAS AND THEN RETURNING TO NORMAL SPEED. *TR

I RESEARCHED THIS AND SEE THAT IT IS A FREQUENTLY VOICED COMPLAINT AND IS HAPPENING VERY PREMATURELY 50 -90 THOUSAND MILES.. RIDICULOUS EXPENSIVE AND DANGEROUS, ALSO ! NEED REPLACEMENT OF CONTROL ARMS AT A COST OF 800 DOLLARS! MY NISSAN QUEST HAS BEEN MAKING A RATTLING NOISE THAT IS PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. I TOOK IT IN TODAY AND WAS TOLD THAT I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TIMING CHAIN AND THAT I SHOULD TAKE IT TO A DEALER OR ENGINE SHOP THAT IS EQUIPPED TO FIX SUCH AN ISSUE. ONE OF THE REASONS I FAVORED BUYING THIS CAR WAS BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT NISSAN USES A TIMING CHAIN RATHER THAN A TIMING BELT. THUS, I WOULDN'T HAVE THE EXPENSE OF REPLACING A TIMING BELT IN THE FUTURE. I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE THAT TIMING CHAINS WOULD NOT BE SOMETHING THAT I WOULD NEED TO FIX. BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM IS PREVALENT AMONG QUEST OWNERS, I BELIEVE THAT NISSAN SHOULD RECALL THEIR VEHICLES THAT SUFFER FROM THE SAME DESIGN FLAW. IF NISSAN DOESN'T ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET INJURED OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF ONE OF THEIR FAULTY TIMING BELTS BREAKING WHILE ONE OF THEIR FAULTY CARS IS BEING DRIVEN. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN OF THE MALFUNCTION DETECTED BY THE TROUBLE CODE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WE WERE GOING OVER LOVELAND PASS IN COLORADO. AS SOON AS WE STARTED GOING BACK DOWN THE ENGINE FAILED. I HAD TO DRIFT WITH NO POWER TO A SHOULDER TO PULL OFF ON. MY TWO KIDS WERE IN THE CAR AND WERE SCARED ABOUT ME HAVING NO POWER. HAD TO WAIT AN HOUR TO TOW IT. THE GARAGE SAID THE TIMING BELT BROKE, $1900 TO FIX....... *TR
MY CAR ENGINE HAS BEEN MAKING A CLICKING NOISE FOR THE PAST 10,000 MILES AND SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. ON TAKING IT INTO THE DEALER AT APPROX 95,000 MILES, THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO HAVE THE TIMING CHAIN REPLACED WITH OTHER INCIDENTALS FOR A COST OF APPROX $3200., $2300 ALONE FOR THE TIMING BELT ASPECT. I DID NOT FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THE TIMING CHAIN REPAIR BUT ONLY THE REPAIR OF THE HIGH SPEED STEERING HOSE. I HAVE BEEN REVIEWING THE TIMING CHAIN REPORTS AND IT DEFINITELY SEEM THAT NISSAN HAS A PROBLEM WITH FAILING TIMING CHAINS AND IT DOES SEEM LIKE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND AS SUCH SHOULD BE RECALLED. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT NHTSA START AN INVESTIGATION INTO RECALLING ALL THE NISSAN TIMING CHAIN VEHICLES. *TT

UPON DOING SOME RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON ISSUE WITH 04 QUESTS AND IT APPEARS TO HAPPEN BETWEEN 60 -90,000 MILES (MINE IS JUST OVER 80,000). TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER BROKE CAUSING TIMING CHAIN TO RATTLE LOUDLY. NISSAN SAID THE REPAIR WOULD BE ABOUT $2,400.00. APPARENTLY THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE NISSAN 3.5 ENGINE AND SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO A RECALL. *JS
THE TIMING CHAIN GUIDES (TEFLON BASED MATERIAL) IN THE VQ35 ENGINES WERE PREMATURELY CAUSING AUDIBLE RUBBING AND BANGING UPON START UP AND EARLY WARM UP IDLE CONDITIONS. THIS PREMATURE WEAR OF THE TENSION GUIDES IS A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE TIMING CHAIN HAS UNDO SLACK FROM EARLY DEGRADATION OF TENSION GUIDES WHICH MAY CAUSE THE TIMING CHAIN TO WEAR/BREAK PREMATURELY AND WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY AND PUT THE LIVES OF THE VEHICLES OCCUPANTS IN DANGER OF POSSIBLY BEING STRUCK MY ONCOMING VEHICLES. *LN
