NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2009 Nissan Rogue. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I have a 2009 Nissan Rogue and a couple years ago the passenger airbag sensor indication on the dash continually flashes and the airbag light shows it is turned off. After a lot of research it looks like this has been a problem in 2008 and 2010 Nissan Rogues and a recall was issued. The same airbags and sensors were used in the 2009 but no recall. This could be catastrophic if the vehicle was in an accident and the airbag did not deploy.
-The car was driving it started to smell burn. car was parked. 10 minutes later took fire. total loss. -Safety was at risk due to fire. -Car is a total loss -File a case with Nissan America on 6/2024 with pictures, police report and all, no solution as of today. Case #51927325 2009 Nissan Rogue -No warning only fire odor
The dashboard airbag light is blinking and will not shut off. I have tried to reset it and it goes off but comes right back on. I have took it to an auto part shop for a diagnostic reading and no code comes up. I see on the internet where nissan has recalled 2008 and 2010 Rogue for this problem but not the 2009.
My air bag warning light is flashing on and off. I’m told by my repair man that the air bag is defective and the entire passenger seat needs to be replaced.
The seat belt doesn't always lock when pulled all the way as it should.
I have a 2009 Nissan Rouge. The CVT TRANSMISSION is failing. I know there was a recall on certain 2009 Rouges for this. Mine is not on the recall list but I think it should be. Its leaking fluid bad, just all of a sudden. It won’ t accelerate after I stop at a traffic light , it’s sluggish, sometimes it feels like the engine is going to fall out when I do finally get it to go, it smells hot, it sputters and jerks when on freeway and in traffic I’m not sure what it’s going to do. I’m a 67 year old woman who is on a fixed income. I can’t afford a new car or to have another transmission put in this one. Nissans are suppose to last forever. They are supposed to be reliable cars. I need help
The automatic transmission CVT is jerking when accelerating and it is a problem when in traffic. This could cause an accident. It is a risk to use. No other vehicle and have to work. I will continue to use it. Took it to AAMCO and repairs are over $5000.00 and can't afford it. New transmission or repair the one on the vehicle.
The driver's side seat is laying flat back and will not come up when I press the button. It has been like this for about two weeks. I am not comfortable driving the car but I need to have my mobility. I have a small special needs child and have not had her in the car since and have used uber on occasion. I live within public transportation in NYC so I have been taking a chance and driving like this to the subway and using the trains. I would like to see if my vehicle can be repaired under the recall #R21B9 regarding electrical issues, because based on what I am reading my issue is exactly as noted. Please review my incident and assist me in having the issue repaired. Thank you
A vehicle was purchased from Pristine Auto Sales in Hopkinsville, KY. Following the purchase, the vehicle was inspected by a licensed mechanic and he reported the following, "I/We ("Licensed Mechanic Shop") inspected "Owner's" 2009 Nissan Rogue vin# XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX today due to her hearing grinding when applying her brake to stop and the vehicle is pulling to the left when applying the brake to stop. I also noticed the airbag light is on as well. Upon inspection the brake pads, the pads in the rear of the vehicle are metal to metal (on the inside) and the front pads are 1mm thick. According to NHTSA vehicles should not be on the road or even be sold from a dealer with brake pads any thinner than 3mm. It is a MAJOR safety concern as it will cause an accident. Also, after inspecting why the airbag light was on, it is found that one or more of the occupant sensors are defective and therefor causing the airbag system to be disabled. In the event of an accident the airbag system will not work. It is also against NHTSA for a vehicle to be sold with a defective Safety system such as Airbag system." The issues were present upon purchase. The purchaser is not knowledgeable about vehicles. Given that the vehicle was sold with the safety concerns already present, it appears that this auto sale business is not in compliance with NHTSA and mechanic has spoken with the business and they were unwilling to cooperate to ensure repairs were made on vehicle.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated, and the "Passenger Air Bag Off" warning message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed with occupant sensor unit failure. The front passenger seat and the occupant sensor unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer, Nissan of Melbourne (440 S Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32901) and Mike Erdman Nissan (4640 FL-520, Cocoa, FL 32926) were made aware of the failure and informed the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 126,000. Consumer called 3 different Nissan dealers in our local area (Pat Fischer Nissan, Nissan of Melbourne, and Mike Erdman Nissan) and they concurred you cannot just buy the sensor, you must order the seat which contains the sensor (seat part #873A2JM30B). The list price is $1,630.45—even with Nissan dealer installation, the seat must be ordered and paid for in advance and is not returnable as it is part of the Air Bag System. The labor cost is approximately $230-$250 when you add in additional shop fees and taxes, the total repair cost is in the $2,000 range.
Airbag malfunction light flashes on dashboard. Passenger side airbag deactivated light lit next to gear shift. Have been told that OCS sensor in the passenger seat has malfunctioned.
I contacted Nissan July 2018 and was told there were no reports of the issue I was having... Unfortunately what I've experienced seems to be common. I occasionally work as a self employed artist and on long trips my Rogue will refuse to speed up. It doesn't matter how hard I press the gas pedal. It's like something isn't connecting. Nissan said they couldn't find any reports of this happening but I see many complaints. The suv refuses to go over 20mph, sometimes even lower. This issue has put my life at risk many times and I'm wondering what it will take for something to change!? It happened going uphill multiple times and seems to happen when traffic is at a stop and go. The only recall issue I saw had to do with snow and salt getting in somewhere. This seems to happen when it's warmer outside.
The passenger side airbag indicator light flashes continually on the dash and stays illuminated on the console. This same issue was recalled for the 2008 and 2010 Nissan Rogues but for some reason not the 2009. My vehicle only has 62,000 miles on it currently and this is a safety issue.
The airbag light comes on and does not turn off.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the air bag warning light was flashing on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the occupant classification system sensor needing to be replaced in the passenger’s side seat cushion. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact that the Vin was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 84,200.
AIRBAG LIGHT BLINKING ON INSTRUMENT PANEL AND PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG LIGHT ON. NISSAN OF BOWIE IN MARYLAND WANTS TO CHARGE ME OVER $2474.56 TO TRIM, SEAT CUSHION FRONT. VEHICLE FAILURE 11/04/2020 AT 90,090 MILES. OP CODE BS119.
The airbag light turned on and wouldn’t turn off.
2009 NISSAN ROGUE WITH LESS THAN 60,000 ORIGINAL MILES WON'T ACCELERATE EVEN WHEN PUSHING DOWN THE THROTTLE PEDAL. ON THE HIGHWAY, ONCE DRIVEN FOR A WHILE, IT WILL NOT MAINTAIN SPEED NO MATTER HOW MUCH THROTTLE IS APPLIED. RESEARCH SEEMS TO INDICATE A TRANSMISSION DESIGN FLAW. THERE ARE LOTS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS THAT CAN BE FOUND ON-LINE. I FEEL THIS IS VERY MUCH A SAFETY HAZARD.
THE AIRBAG WARNING LAMP TURNED ON OUT OF NOWHERE WHEN I STARTED MY CAR.. JUST A REGULAR DAY.. SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE SENSOR AND THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL FOR 08 AND '14 MODELS WITH THE SAME ISSUE.. HOWEVER THE NISSAN DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEY GET A LOT OF CLIENTS WITH THIS ISSUE FOR 09 MODELS.
ENGINE
THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME OUT FLASHING TAKE TO THE MECHANIC NOTHING ERROR WITH THE VEHICLE
THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT BLINKS ALL THE TIME. THIS ALSO TURNS OFF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG. IT APPEARS THAT 2008 THROUGH 2013 HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WHY IS 2009 NOT RECALLED FOR THE SAME DEFECT?
WHEN THE TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW 32 DEGREES WHEN TRYING TO OPEN THE DRIVER DOOR HANDLE THE CABLE HAS CAME OUT OF THE HOUSING. WHICH NOW THE DOOR CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHED CONTINUOUSLY AT START-UP. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT SEAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000. *BF
TOOK CAR TO DEALER FOR AIRBAG LIGHT AND DIAGNOSTIC SAYS AIRBAG SENSOR ON PASSENGER SEAT. COST OF $2,000 TO REPLACE. MANY REPORTS OF THE SAME AND DEALER SAYS NO RECALLS FOR THIS.
I SPEND MORE THE 2000 DOLLARS AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES MY CAR DON'T HAVE POWER WENT I STOP AND RUN 😫 😩 I TOOK TO NISSAN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES THEY TOLD ME FUEL PUMP I CHANGE AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUED I CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION OIL AND CONTINUES I CLEAN THE TROWBODY AND CONTINUES I CHANGE ENGINE OIL AND CONTINUES I DON'T KNOW WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO
AS OF YESTERDAY (9/3/2020) MY 2009 NISSAN ROGUE WITH 101,000 MILES HAS HER PASSENGER SIDE, AIRBAG LIGHT FLASHING ON THE DASH AND THE CONSOLE AIRBAG LIGHT ON. MY RESEARCH SHOWS THE AIRBAG SENSOR TO HAVE BEEN A RECALL ON '08 AND '10 ROGUES, BUT NOT '09. (THE TSB NO. IS 08-095D.) THIS MAKES ZERO SENSE TO ME, IT IS AN EXTREME DANGER TO ME AND MY FAMILY, AND UNACCEPTABLE. WHEN THE LIGHT CAME ON THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR, PRIOR IT HAD BEEN DRIVEN ABOUT 8 MILES FROM ITS PARKING SPOT. IT HAS SINCE BEEN PARKED AND TURNED ON AGAIN AFTER 12 HRS, LIGHTS ARE STILL ON AND BLINKING ON THE DASH. PLEASE RECALL THIS VEHICLE FOR RECALL OF THIS FAULTY EQUIPMENT. DEATH IS NOT AN OPTION FOR THIS CORRECTABLE PROBLEM.
THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR BECAUSE OF AN AIR BAG SEAT FAULT IN THE 2009 ROGUE CARS. THE 2008 AND 2010 ROGUE MODELS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM BUT A RECALL WAS ENFORCED ON IT. NISSAN ADMITTED THE 2009 SEAT SENSOR WAS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY BUT IT WAS A VIN PROBLEM. FOUND ON YOUR SITE AFFECTED VIN NUMBERS ALL START WITH JN8AS58 INCLUDING MINE. WE ARE ALL HAVING THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM OF THE AIR BAGS BEING SHUT OFF AUTOMATICALLY. NISSAN WANTS 2000 DOLLARS TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM ALSO PASSES THE SAFETY PART OF A NYS VEHICLE INSPECTION. I THOUGH AIR BAGS WERE PUT IN THE CAR TO SAVE LIVES, BUT IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE THEM NOT DEPLOYING. PLEASE PUSH FOR A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE DIES.
AIRBAGS PASSENGER WONT WORK BECAUSE OF FAULTY SENSOR IN PASSENGER SEAT.
THE AIRBAG SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE IN THE 2009 NISSAN ROGUE JUST LIKE THE 2008 AND 2010 ROGUE. THE AIRBAG WEIGHT SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT STAYS ON DISABLING THE PASSENGER AIRBAG TO WHOM EVEN SITS THERE. IT ALSO LEAVES A FLASHING AIRBAG LIGHT IN THE DASHBOARD. NISSAN IS WARE OF THE PROBLEM AND MAKES YOU PAY THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AT AN HOURLY RATE THEN CHARGE YOU OVER $2000 TO REPLACE THE SEAT LIKE THEY DID FOR THE 2008 AND 2010 MODELS IN A RECALL. THE PARTS ARE THE SAME IN THE 2009 MODEL. *TR
PASSENGER AIR BAG SENSOR FAILS RESULTING IN NO AIR BAG DEPLOYED IF ACCIDENT WAS TO OCCUR. THIS OCCURRED IN OTHER MODELS OF NISSAN ROGUE 2008, 2010 HAVE BOTH BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. 2009 MODEL HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS ISSUE YET, THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS PERTAINING TO THIS SAME YEAR MODEL FOR SAME ISSUE. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED THIS WAS NOTED ON ROUTINE SAFETY CHECK FOR STATE INSPECTION IS NOT COVERED BY NISSAN AND COST OVER 2000$ TO FIX.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HART NISSAN LOCATED AT (6564 MECHANICSVILLE TURNPIKE, MECHANICSVILLE, VA 804-417-0202) WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE VEHICLE OCCUPANCY SENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE 2008 AND 2010 NISSAN ROGUES WERE INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 08V521000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM), HOWEVER, THE 2009 NISSAN ROGUE WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. A CASE WAS OPENED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000. *DT*JB
FRONT PASSENGER AND DRIVERSIDE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE. WITH INTERMITTENT INSIDE DOOR OPENING ISSUE AS WELL. OCCURS IN COLD WEATHER FREEZING AREAS.
DRIVERS SIDE DOOR OCCASIONALLY WILL NOT OPEN. IT CAN NEVER BE OPENED FROM OUTSIDE, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL TIMES WHEN I'M INSIDE AND GO TO OPEN THE DOOR TO GET OUT, AND IT WONT OPEN. THIS IS WITH ENGINE TURNED OFF, CAR IN PARK, AND DOORS UNLOCKED. IN AN EMERGENCY, SUCH AS CAR STALLING ON A RAILROAD TRACK/CAR SINKING IN A POND/ENGINE ON FIRE - I COULD BE STUCK INSIDE!
FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCK STOPPED WORKING AND NOW ONLY WORKS MANUALLY FROM THE INSIDE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS WAS INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. GREENWAY NISSAN OF JACKSONVILLE, 1726 CASSAT AVE, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32210, (904) 779-3502, WAS CONTACTED BY PHONE AND INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED NOR INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 139,000.
MY NISSAN ROGUE 2009 PASSENGER AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT IS NOW BLINKING> I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY SAID THE SEAT SENSOR HAS WENT BAD. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS THE EXACT ISSUE AS THE NTB08-095 RECALL AFFECTING THE 2008 NISSAN ROGUE BUT IT IS NOT COVERED FOR THE 2009. THIS WARNING ALERT WAS RESET, BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. THE ESTIMATED COST TO FIX THIS IS $2000.
MY CAR HONK IS NO LONGER WORKING, THE TECHNICIAN CHECKED THE FUSE BOX BUT DID NOT SEE ANY ISSUES.
ONCE THE VEHILCE IS WARMED, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE FROM A STOP. WITH THE ACCELERATER PEDAL HELD DOWN IN ABOUT 15 SECONDS THE RPM WILL RISE AND THE VEHICLE WILL KICK INTO GEAR AND BEGIN TO ACCELERATE.
CVT TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SWITCH GEARS EFFICIENTLY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MOVE SLOW IN HIGH SPEED ROADS & HIGHWAYS.
I HAVE THE SRS LIGHT CONSTANTLY ON AND WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OCCUPANT SEAT SENSOR IS BAD AND NEED REPLACEMENT. THIS DEVICE STOP THE PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG FROM DEPLOYING EVEN IF THERE IS AN OCCUPANT, SO THEY ARE AT RISK. DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY USERS NEED TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A SAFETY DEVICE THAT SHOULD WORK. 2008 NISSAN ROGUE WAS RECALLED, SO WHY OTHER YEAR AREN'T IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT SOLVED.
PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ON. RESET BY DEALER, AND BACK ON WITHIN A DAY OR TWO. DEALER NOW SAYS THEY HAVE TRACED THIS BACK TO A FAULTY SENSOR IN THE SEAT CUSHION, AND THE COST OF THE PART ALONE IS OVER $2000.00 THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, THERE A NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON HERE FOR VARIOUS YEARS OF ROGUES. AND THAT IS JUST FROM THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO VOICE CONCERN.
FRONT ENGINE CRADLE SUBFRAME CROSSMEMBER BUSHING KITS HAVE ISSUES DUE TO WHICH I AM GETTING CONSTANT SOUND FROM THE ENGINE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A REGULAR COMPLAINT WITH MY KIND OF VEHICLE. WHICH IS NISSAN ROUGHER 2009 SL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT RESET THE WARNING INDICATOR, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED TWO WEEKS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
ONCE THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN CONTINUALLY FOR AT LEAST 45 MINUTES OR MORE THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT COMES AND THE CAR LOSES PRESSURE AND STARTS MAKING A WHINING NOISE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY.
BLINKING AIRBAG LIGHT ON DASHBOARD. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY CHARGED $115 FOR INSPECTION AND SAID THAT PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION NEEDS TO BE CHANGED WHICH HAS OCS SENSOR BUILT IN, WHICH WOULD COST ADDITIONAL $1965. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL NISSAN ROGUE 2009 AND THE COMPANY MUST RECALL TO RESOLVE THIS AS IF THE AIRBAGS DO NOT DEPLOY IN CASE OF ACCIDENT IT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATH
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V521000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 151,600.
TAKATA RECALL - FLASHING AIR BAG DASH LIGHT RENDERS THE AIR BAG SYSTEM SUSCEPTIBLE TO FAILURE. EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH 2008 AND 2010 MODEL NISSAN ROGUE COVERED UNDER RECALL. WHY NOT 2009 MODEL?! ISSUE A RECALL FOR 2009 MODEL NISSAN ROGUE TO FIX THIS ISSUE BY YEAR END.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving up an incline at various speeds, the stalled while depressing the accelerator. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shuddered without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the rotor was replaced on the passenger’s side front however, the failure persisted. The contact was referred by another mechanic to an authorized dealer to schedule an appointment for the vehicle to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
I WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT THE SEATBELT SENSOR WAS NOT OPERATIVE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY CAR. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE THAT MAY WARRANT A RECALL.
