The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the recall was marked closed by the dealer without performing the recall repair. The manufacturer was contacted, and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Pontiac G8. The contact stated that after turning off the vehicle, the ignition key could not be removed from the ignition switch. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
WAS DRIVING ON BOTH HIGHWAY & NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS AND THE AIR BAG FAULT LIGHT & WARNING TONE CAME ON. AFTER MANY DIAGNOSIS DRIVE TESTS, I LEARNED THAT EVERY TIME MAKING A COMPLETE LEFT U-TURN THE AIRBAG FAULT INDICATOR WOULD DISAPPEAR. HOWEVER ONCE COMPLETING THE FULL LEFT U-TURN, AND DRIVING STRAIGHT CENTER WHEEL POSITION, THE AIRBAG FAULT INDICATOR LIGHT AND WARNING TONES WOULD REOCCUR. WHEN CONTACTING MY ONSTAR MONITORING SERVICE, THEY WERE ABLE TO DO AN OVER THE AIR DIAGNOSTIC FAULT CODE TEST. IT CAME BACK AS FAULT CODE B0012 FOR CLOCKSPRING, DRIVER STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT LOOP FAILURE. WHENEVER THE AIRBAG FAULT INDICATOR IS ACTIVATED ON THIS MODEL, THE ENTIRE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY DISABLED AND NONFUNCTIONAL IN PREVENTING MAJOR INJURIES WHICH CAN LEAD TO FATALITIES. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE OF THE REPLACEMENT CLOCKSPRING PART COST, AND WAS QUOTED IN THE $450.00 RANGE PLUS LABOR TECH INSTALL. IN ADDITION, WAS TOLD THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER. IT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A KNOWN DEFECT ON THIS MODEL AND SINCE IS AIRBAG RELATED, SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY THE MANUFACTURER, WHICH IS GENERAL MOTORS. I COULD BE LIKE THOUSANDS OF OTHER OWNERS TO MISINTERPRET THE SEVERITY OF THIS DEFECT, AND BE DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT WILL FAIL TO SAVE MY LIFE IF EVER INVOLVED IN A MAJOR COLLISION. THIS SHOULD NOT GO UNNOTICED & SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED & RESOLVED JUST LIKE THE ONE THAT WAS FOR OTHER MAJOR CAR MANUFACTURERS FOR FAULTY AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT ISSUES. KEEP GETTING AIR BAG LIGHT ON CODE U0170 AND B0081 SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A BIG SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE PONTIAC G8 NEEDS A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM AND REPLACED THE REAR ABS SENSORS AND STILL HAVE THE ISSUE WITH IT NOT WORKING AND REPLACED THEM 2 TIMES WITH NEW SENSORS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 PONTIAC G8. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN WAS STRETCHED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000.
PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY MODULE - FAILURE THE FAILURE OF AN ELECTRONIC MODULE LOCATED UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT, DEFAULTS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM TO "OFF". COST IS JUST UNDER $1,000 FOR DEALER REPLACEMENT. DEALER INDICATED THERE WAS NO METHOD TO TURN ON THE AIRBAG SYSTEM - REGARDLESS OF PASSENGER OR NOT. BECAUSE OF THIS FAILURE (MANY FAILURES RECOGNIZED SINCE THE 2006 SOLSTICE MODEL) ANY PASSENGER IS SUBJECT TO AN UNSAFE CONDITION WITHOUT ACTIVE AIRBAG. THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE NEGATES THE DEALER COST TO REPAIR. COMPLAINT FILER FEELS THE COST OF THE REPLACEMENT MODULE SHOULD BE HALF OF THAT QUOTED BY THE DEALER SINCE GENUINE GM PARTS ARE AVAILABLE AT $275 INSTEAD OF DEALER COST OF $417 AND THAT LABOR OF 2.5 HOURS TO REPLACE MODULE UNDER THE SEAT IS EXCESSIVE BASED ON TIME TAKEN BY OTHERS SELF-CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. AIR BAG FAULT LIGHT COMES ON WHEN CAR IS STARTED, WHICH MEANS THAT THE AIR BAGS WILL NOT WORK. THERE IS AN AIR BAG RECALL TO THIS CAR, BUT THEY WILL NOT FIX MY CAR'S FAULT LIGHT PROBLEM. MY CAR HAS JUST OVER 100K AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON WITH CODES B0081 AND U0170. THE AIRBAGS ARE NOW NOT FUNCTIONING BECAUSE OF A FAULTY PASSENGER PRESENCE MODULE. IT HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY TIME I START THE VEHICLE (ABOUT 95% OF THE TIME). THE AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATES, STAYS ON, AND THE VEHICLE SHOWS AN AIRBAG FAULT WARNING. FROM THE RESEARCH I'VE DONE, THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THE PONTIAC G8 AND THE ENTIRE AIRBAG SYSTEM IS INOPERABLE ONCE THIS MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THERE ARE DOZENS, IF NOT HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS MODULE AND THE FACT THAT IT DISABLES THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND THE END CONSUMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO FOOT THE BILL TO REPLACE THIS MODULE, CONSIDERING THAT GM KNOWS ABOUT THIS DEFECT AND THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS.

MY AUTOMATIC LOCKS ON MY 2008 PONTIAC G6 QUIT WORKING ON THE BACK DOORS. MY HAZARD LIGHT BUTTON WILL GO ON BUT WILL NOT SHUT OFF WHEN YOU SHUT IT OFF. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, MY POWER STEERING LIGHT ON MY RADIO COMES ON. IT HAS FLASHED OFF ONCE AND THEN THE OTHER DAY, IT CAME ON AND STAYED ON UNTIL I SHUT MY CAR OFF. I HEAR A SQUEAL ALSO THAT IS GETTING WORSE. AND THE OTHER DAY I WENT TO GO UP A HILL COMING OUT OF TOWN AND IT MADE A WEIRD NOISE; I LEFT OFF THE GAS AND IT QUIT. IT ONLY HAS 54,500 MILES OR SO ON IT.

PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT FAULT REMAINS ILLUMINATED INDICATING THAT THE SYSTEM IS DISABLED. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR IS KNOWN BY GM AS BEING DEFECTIVE AND THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY. THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND STABILITY CONTROL INDICATORS ARE ILLUMINATED AND WILL NOT FUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER SUGGESTED TO CHECK ALL FUSES, THE WIRING HARNESS, REPLACE WHEEL BEARINGS, AND CHANGE ALL WHEEL SENSORS. ALL ITEMS WERE REPLACED AND THE FAILED SYSTEM REMAINS INACTIVE. THE AIRBAG SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT IS RECOMMENDED TO BE REPLACED BY REMOVAL OF THE SEAT, CUTTING INTO THE SEAT AND INSTALLING A NEW SENSOR. THEN THE VEHICLE MUST BE REPROGRAMMED BY AN AUTHORIZED GM SERVICE FACILITY. THIS REPAIR IS IN EXCESS OF $1,200.00. THE FAILED SYSTEMS OCCUR IF MOVING OR NOT AND IS A LIFE SAFETY CONCERN.
I HAVE GOTTEN A "AIRBAG FAULT" WARNING EVERY TIME I START MY CAR. APPARENTLY THIS IS DUE TO A CENSOR GIVING OUT AND TO REPAIR THE ISSUE COSTS ABOUT $1000. THIS IS HIGHLY UNSATISFACTORY AS MANY USERS OF THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE HAVE REPORTED THIS ISSUE WHEN OPERATING THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. THIS IN A SENSE RENDERS THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO OPERATE AS DRIVERS (SOME UNAWARE), WHIVH I WAS NOT, ARE OPERATING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ANY OPERABLE AIRBAGS. THE COST TO REPAIR IS VERY HIGH FOR A FEATURE THAT IS A SAFETY STANDARD ACROSS THE INDUSTRY. THE AIRBAG SYSTEM OF A VEHICLE SHOULD NEVER HAVE ANY FAULTS OR FAILURES UNLESS IT HAS BEEN DEPLOYED OR TAMPERED WITH. IT IS QUITE DISAPPOINTING THAT A SYSTEM THAT HAS NEVER BEEN USED OR TAMPERED WITH CAN HAVE SUCH COSTLY FAULTS/FAILURES. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS SCARY. I FEEL LIKE SOME THING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. GM NEEDS TO RECALL THE MODULE THAT WILL FIX THIS ISSUE ASAP. THIS AIR FAULT IS PUTTING MANY FAMILIES AT RISK OF LOSS OF LIFE!!! REAR PASSENGER DOOR AND DRIVERS DOOR ARE NOT LOCKING WITH REMOTE KEY OR ELECTRIC POWER DOOR SWITCH. THIS BEGAN WITH ONLY THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR BUT HAS MIGRATED TO DRIVERS DOOR AS WELL. THIS PROBLEM COULD LEAD TO THEFT OF INTERNAL CONTENTS AND WORSE, VEHICLE ROBBERY. *TR
AIR BAG FAULT LIGHT COMES ON IMMEDIATELY UPON TURNING VEHICLE ON AND SYSTEM CHECKS RUN THROUGH. AFTER THIS OCCURS, THE AIR BAG DUMMY LIGHT INDICATOR TURNS ON AS WELL AND REGARDLESS IF A PASSENGER IS SITTING ON THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DOES NOT TURN ON. *TR
I AM INVESTIGATING A FIRE , THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS A 2008 PONTIAC G4. AFTER THE OWNER DROVE THE CAR HE PARKED IT IN HIS GARAGE. WITHIN 20 MIN. OF PARKING THE CAR IT WAS ON FIRE IN HIS GARAGE. THE FIRE LOOKS TO HAVE STARTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE CAR. THIS FIRE BURNED HIS HOUSE DOWN AND INJURED HIM. IGNITION KEY FELL INTO TWO PIECES. BOTH PIECES NEED TO BE TOUCHING TO EACH OTHER TO START THE ENGINE. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO START THE ENGINE IF YOU ARE STRANDED AND NERVOUS. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A PREVIOUSLY OWNED VEHICLE FROM WILLIAMS USED CARS, ELKTON, MD 21921 THE 28TH DAY OF MAY 2013. THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR A NEW KEY. SHALL I DO THAT?

AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO THE MEDIAN STRIP AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE KEY FOB CONTAINS THE IGNITION KEY AND UNFOLDS WITH A BUTTON PRESS, BUT THE SPRING MECHANISM HOLDING IT OPEN IS A BIT WEAK. WHEN YOU HAVE IT ATTACHED TO A KEY CHAIN, THE WEIGHT OF THE KEYS CAN FAIRLY EASILY MAKE THE KEY FOB FOLD OVER IN AN "L" SHAPE WITH THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING OFTEN, AND BEING 6 FT 1 IN TALL, MY KNEE BUMPED THE KEYS WHILE I WAS PUTTING MY FOOT BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE GAS PEDAL AND ON THE BRAKE. DUE TO THE FOLDED OVER KEY FOB ATTACHED TO THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THERE WAS ENOUGH LEVERAGE PLACED ON THE IGNITION SWITCH, TURNING THE IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION, AND THE CAR SHUT OFF WHILE ROLLING ALONG IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. *TR
EVER SINCE I WENT TO HAVE THE REPROGRAM DONE ON MY AIR BAGS SYSTEM I HAVE GOTTEN A "AIRBAG FAULT" WARNING EVERY TIME I START MY CAR. I WENT TO GO ON A SHORT TRIP, AND AS SOON AS THE VEHICLE STARTED THE MESSAGE," AIR BAG FAULT" READ IN MY DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE PASSENGER PRESENCE MODULE WAS FAULTY, PART NUMBER 92225595. QUOTED ME ABOUT 800 DOLLARS FOR THE REPAIR. LIKE OTHERS HAVE POSTED ON THIS SITE, WHEN THAT MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED, THAT INDICATES THAT THE WHOLE AIRBAG SRS IS DEACTIVATED. I QUESTIONED HOW THIS WASN'T A RECALL SINCE IT IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ON A CAR THAT IS 5 YEARS OLD, AND THE RESPONSE WAS,"WE DON'T KNOW." I HAVE REPLACED THE MODULE MYSELF AND HAVE HAD A GM DEALER REPROGRAM IT DO MY VEHICLE. WHAT REALLY IRKS ME OFF, IS THAT THE PART NUMBER FOR PART THAT BECAME FAULTY, IS DIFFERENT THAN THE REPLACEMENT PART THAT WAS USED TO FIX THE ISSUE. THIS BLATANTLY INDICATES THAT GM IS WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE SINCE THEY ARE THE ONES WHO RECOMMENDED ME TO REPLACE THE FAULTY PART WITH THIS "UPDATED" PART. THIS WOULD NOT BE SUCH A BIG ISSUE BECAUSE I AM WELL AWARE OF THE FACT THAT SOME PARTS ARE SUBJECT TO BEING REPLACED BECAUSE OF NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, BUT THIS IS A MODULE THAT LITERALLY SITS UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT BOTTOM, AND IS NOT SUBJECT TO ANY KIND OF OUTSIDE ELEMENTS, MECHANICAL MOVING CAPABILITY, OR THE ELEMENTS, SO THE ONLY WAY THIS PART COULD FAIL IS BECAUSE OF AN IMPROPER DESIGN OR OTHER ELEMENT THAT THE CUSTOMER HAS NO CONTROL OVER. THAT REASON ALONE SHOWS WHY THIS MODULE, BEING A KEY PART IN THE SRS SYSTEM, SHOULD BE RECALLED AND INSTALLED WITH THE NEW UPDATED MODULE. UPPER RADIATOR NECK SNAPPED OFF OF RADIATOR, ALLOWING UPPER RADIATOR HOSE TO SEPARATE FROM RADIATOR. ALL COOLANT ESCAPED CAUSING ENGINE TO IMMEDIATELY OVERHEAT. "ENGINE EXTREME OVERHEAT" LIGHT ON DASH CAME ON. GM SAYS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS IS EVIDENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS, AND THE SIMILAR 2004-2006 GTO AS EVIDENCED BY ALL THE THREADS ON THE SUBJECT ON GRRRR8.NET AND G8BOARD.NET. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. THERE HAVE BEEN PRIOR RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROGRAMMING ON THE AIR BAG SYSTEM AND MY CAR HAS HAD AN AIRBAG MODULE REPLACED ONCE ALREADY. A QUICK SEARCH ON THE INTERNET SHOWS NUMEROUS OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE ON PONTIAC G8S THAT IN MANY CASES HAVE EVEN LESS MILES THAN MINE ON THEM. MANY OF THE STORIES ONLINE ARE LITTERED WITH DEALER ESTIMATES TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM, WITH REPAIRS RUNNING UPWARDS OF $900+ TO REPLACE ONE MODULE (GM PART NO. 92225595), AND THAT MIGHT NOT EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM. IN SOME CASES DEALERS ARE DIAGNOSING THE SENSOR (GM PART NO. 92220398) AS HAVING TO BE REPLACED AS WELL, WHICH IS ANOTHER $900+. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE (AT LEAST THAT ARE REPORTING IT ONLINE) AND THERE MUST BE MANY OTHERS AS WELL THAT HAVEN'T TAKEN TO THE ONLINE FORUMS TO REPORT THEIR PROBLEM. WITH A REPAIR AS COSTLY AS THIS ONE (ON A CAR WHOSE MARKET VALUE IS ROUGHLY $15,000) I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE MANY ARE MAKING THE REQUIRED REPAIRS AS THE COST TO DO IT IS SIGNIFICANT (AND IN MY CASE >10% OF THE TOTAL MARKET VALUE OF THE CAR). THE ELECTRONIC DOOR LOCKS ON 2008-2009 MY PONTIAC G8 VEHICLES ARE DEFECTIVE AND GM NEEDS TO ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL TO PERMANENTLY ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS ONLINE FROM G8 OWNERS REGARDING THE DOOR LOCKS FAILING ANYWHERE FROM THE FIRST YEAR TO SEVERAL YEARS LATER. THIS PREMATURE FAILURE MAY OCCUR ON ANY FRONT, REAR, LEFT, OR RIGHT DOOR. WITH LESS THAN 40,000 TOTAL PONTIAC G8 PRODUCED, IDENTICAL FAILURES ON MULTIPLE OWNERS' VEHICLES INDICATE THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED FAILURE. THE ELECTRONIC MOTOR WITHIN THE DOOR LOCK/LATCH MECHANISM IS NOT ROBUST ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND REPEATED LOCKING/UNLOCKING FUNCTIONS. THE RESULT OF THIS FAILURE IS THAT THE DOOR WILL NO LONGER LOCK/UNLOCK. GM USED TO COVER THE COST OF REPLACING THESE PARTS UNDER THE 3-YEAR, 36,000-MILE BUMPER-TO-BUMPER WARRANTY. THE AGE OF THESE VEHICLES HAS DETERMINED THAT THE PARTS ARE NO LONGER COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. OWNERS MUST REPAIR THE DEFECT AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. NEW OEM PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN REVISED TO IMPROVE QUALITY. OWNERS HAVE NO PERMANENT SOLUTION TO THIS FAILURE AS THE REPLACEMENT PART WILL AGAIN REQUIRE REPLACEMENT AT OWNERS' EXPENSE. THE PARTS ARE DEFECTIVE WHICH GM FAILS TO ACKNOWLEDGE, AND ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO ADVISED THAT THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WAS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SHIFTER CABLE HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT ENGAGE. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE CODE. NEITHER WINDSHIELD WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER DENIED ASSISTANCE WITH THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN 95 SOUTH NEAR BALTIMORE AT ABOUT 70MPH AT 7AM THIS MORNING WHEN MY 2008 PONTIAC G8 GT (WITH THE L76 6.0LV8 ENGINE) ALERTED ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS HOT. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND WHEN I POPPED THE HOOD I SAW THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE WAS NOT ATTACHED TO THE RADIATOR ANYMORE AND A LOT OF COOLANT HAD LEAKED EVERYWHERE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, I SAW THAT THE PASTIC RADIATOR FLANGE THAT THE HOSE ATTACHES TOO HAD BROKEN OFF OF THE RADIATOR AND WAS IN THE HOSE. SINCE THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM, WHICH I BELIEVE IS PART OF THE POWERTRAIN (GM WILL TRY AND TELL YOU OTHERWISE) WAS NO LONGER FUNCTIONING, I CLEARLY COULDN'T DRIVE ANYMORE, SO I WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF A VERY BUSY 95. BEING STRANDED IS A SAFETY ISSUE, RIGHT? BESIDES THE IMMEDIATE WARNING LIGHT/ALARM, I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR WARNING THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. IT WAS A SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED INCIDENT. I DID NOT HEAR ANYTHING BEFORE HAND. I SAW NO STEAM FROM THE HOOD OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. NOTHING. JUST THE IMMEDIATE WARNING LIGHT/ALARM. BESIDES AN OIL CHANGE AT ABOUT 62,000 MILES, I HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER SERVICES SINCE 50,000 MILES THAT WOULD HAVE TOUCHED THAT HOSE. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE HOSE AND THE BROKEN FLANGE AND I HAVE THE BROKEN PIECE OF FLANGE IN MY POSSESSION AND THE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY IS STILL IN MY CAR IF YOU'D LIKE TO SEE OR HAVE ANY OF THOSE PIECES. I HAVE A 3RD PARTY WARRANTY THROUGH AMERICAN AUTO AND THEY ARE NOW TELLING ME THAT THIS IS A PRE-EXISTING PROBLEM AND THEY WILL NOT COVER IT.
