NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
ABS module failed, locked up the brakes and almost caused and accident
Power steering quits working while driving.
Have been forced to drive my truck without ABS and also with all the ABS, Brake and Check Engine lights on due to a faulty ABS Module. RAM has been saying for years they had a fix coming and still nothing. Several components will not work due to this issue. Ram service said its ok to drive even without Anti-Lock Brakes. When I said the thousands of owners who are forced to do this are committing insurance fraud and are at risk liability wise they said no worries. The forums are full of owners with the same issue. To add insult to injury they have adjust the software on our RAM vehicle heath report to not show the owner alert for the failure so less informed owners are unaware of exactly what the issue is. HELP!!!!
Power steering (EPS) warning flashes when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. Wheels immediately become difficult to turn.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. Additionally, after stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle fishtailed while the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the cruise control feature was inoperable. The ABS, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), and brake warning lights were illuminated. The "Service Traction Control" and "Service Trailer Brake System" messages were displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the ABS control module needed to be replaced, but the part was on backorder. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V653000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic, Electronic Stability Control (ESC); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
In January 2025, the “Check ABS” warning light illuminated in my 2016 RAM 1500 Laramie. I promptly brought the vehicle to the dealership where it was purchased. Upon inspection, I was informed that the required part for repairs was on back order. I was assured that I would receive an update from the dealership in March 2025 regarding the status of the part, but I did not receive any communication. On June 20, 2025, I contacted the dealership for an update and was informed that the part remains on back order and is no longer being manufactured. However, no solutions or alternative options were provided to address this issue. A representative from the Service Department stated they would escalate the matter to the Parts Manager, but no further plan or resolution was discussed. Given that the vehicle ABS is a key safety feature, I am very concerned that a necessary safety component is unavailable.
Power steering completely went out, without warning, while driving 55 mph. No prior warning - all of a sudden a red light came on with exclamation point saying the power steering must be serviced. Incredibly difficult to steer / drive it to a certified Dodge dealership. A quick inspection found the problem to be: Electric power steering gear unit must be replaced. Estimated price quote for MOPAR replacement part and labor is $3000+
Steering issues with power steering not working properly.
I've read many problems with not being able to put fuel in the truck, I am experiencing that exact problem. You can't pump gas into the tank. The nozzle shuts off immediately, after .15 cents or so. No engine codes to help diagnose the problems.
The vehicle has an air ride suspension that has failed and after researching the issue it seems that this is an ongoing problem for a lot of owners. Without the air ride suspension the vehicle is difficult to control and until fixed it is also my only mode of transportation.
I started hearing a clunk coming from the front of my truck and had it checked and the CV shaft broke. My truck isn’t even 10 years old
My truck was in the dealer for a 66A recall on the crankshaft positioning sensor. The recall states the magnetic material attached to the tone wheel if lost the engine loses its ability to synchronize injector pulse and cam timing. The fix was a PCM reprogram to maintain engine operation if signal is lost. There is a prior recall W68 which address the tone ring for replacement on 2014-2016 model code DS W68 states loss of crankshaft position. the fix under this recall is to replace tone wheel and crank shaft positioning sensor. Because they could lose magnetic material on the tone wheel causing loss of signal from the crankshaft positioning sensor to the PCM. my truck loss power and showed throttle positioning sensor fault and engine light came on . i brought my vehicle into the dealer they diagnosed code po336-00 crankshaft positioning sensor performance. on further inspection found tone wheel has chunk of material missing causing code. they replaced tone wheel as instructed by W68 recall so why is my truck not covered under this recall for the exact same problem.
ABS control module malfunction. No parts available.
While driving almost complete loss of steering. Very hard to turn. After a battery reset, it corrected, but very short lived. I was able to get the vehicle home, but has been undriveable since. Now there is absolutely no steering at all, the rack and pinion is completely locked. The only warning light is the "service power steering" light on the dash, no codes in the computer. Through research, I found that there is a known issue with the computer board on the rack and pinion which is known to cause this problem. The only solution is to replace the rack and pinion with a new one. There is already a recall for vehicles that predate mine, but mine is not included. I have just ordered a new rack and pinion and am having it replaced, but there is a significant core charge, so I will not be keeping the old one.
Abs module has electronic fault requiring repair or replacement there is no modules available to repair with some remanufactured ones are available with prices very high also has to be programmed by a dealer making it a very costly repair if you can find one. This is a safety issue as abs will not function till repair complete chrysler is well aware of issue there is thread after thread about it online.
The ABS module has a fault which is preventing the ABS system from functioning resulting in increased potential for braking mishaps. The module scan shows a c2200-49 code indicating a fault in the module. The RAM dealer states they are unable to get replacement parts from the manufacturer or a non-factory party. From internet searches it appears this is a longstanding problem potentially putting drivers at risk of serious injury or death. Strongly recommend NHTSA ensure a recall is issued to ensure manufacturer resolution of this serious safety problem.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 25 MPH, the check engine warning light was illuminated and the fuel gauge suddenly was inoperative. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank strap and the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The contact researched and discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 102,841.
On [XXX] my power steering system completely froze in sub-0 temperatures. The wheels were unable to steer right or left. After idling for some time, it unfroze resulting in a grinding noise and very stiff steering. This has continued where the steering freezes in cold temperatures and continues to grind. The vehicle was brought to Main Motor in Johnstown NY (dealer) to inspect this and they determined that the Steering Rack (which includes the EPS) had failed- mainly the steering gear. The truck has 88,000 miles. This is a sealed, unserviceable system and should not fail at this point. The dealer price for a replacement part was $3010 plus labor. As the truck had been out of warranty for a month, I brought it to an independent shop for confirmation and they will be completing the repair. These steering systems are a known issue, I spoke to the consumer complaint department at Ram and through the dealer. Neither wanted to rectify the situation at their own cost. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Seat belt disengages randomly while driving on the drivers seat. Everyday since December 25, 2024
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle became difficult to maneuver. The failure occurred on several occasions. The contact stated that the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 11,238.
Intermittently failure of my power steering. Fluid is full, all components appear fine when inspected by mechanic. Upon further research discovered could be an issue with the circuit board. Unable to drive my truck due to the lack of power steering causing a major potential safety issue.
There’s numerous reports with the same year , make, and model regarding power steering issues and Dodge doesn’t seem to do anything regarding it . My power steering is out and it’s a huge safety issue because it went out on me while driving on the freeway and it’s happend to thousands of more Drivers as well from what I’m reading
Issue with the relay controlling the fuel pump located in the fuel tank(lift pump) When the relay stop working, the engine cannot be started or don't supply fuel to the High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) forcing to stop on the road. Could lead seriously to an unsafe situation like the HPFP can do. This issue can be reproduce easily by the dealer. No DTC or check engine ON for this type of issue. The dealer fix it yesterday and the damage was under the TIPM (Total integrated Power Module) The wires connectors under the relay were melted by overheat. This issue lead to an OFF and ON electrical contact between the fuel pump and the relay. This issue is largely documented over internet and can be fix for under 200$ usd with an external relay. But the first FCA option is to replace the TIPM board for 1200$ usd. Actually no recall for this major issue present in many FCA models since many years. The first time this issue happend was december 20, 2024. The date of repair is february, 12 2025. Between those two dates, I got the crank nostart problem many times.
The power steering goes in and out intermittently, while making aturn the power steering went out making it difficult to steer, i crossed the double yellow line stopping just short of the curb. if there was a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction i definitely would of collided. it was 5 am and traffic was slow. it appears this is a known problem for RAM trucks . And there appears to be a NHTSA investigation open.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 25 MPH, the message "Check Brakes" was displayed, and the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. The air suspension went out on my ram 1500, and i cannot drive the vehicle. This happened when I was on the highway, and it almost made crash. After the service suspension light came on, the truck was incredibly hard to control. I had the vehicle towed from Atlantic Expressway to my home. Now the truck doesn't move and is now stuck in the lowered position.
Since buying our 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel, we have had nothing but problems. In 2020 there was an EGR/coolant leak that was supposedly done. Upon getting the recall done, they said that the manufacturer has not yet made any equipment to fix the issue. They replaced our hose, but we have had to get it fixed almost annually since then. This is a lemon of a truck and FCA should be ashamed releasing a vehicle with so many issues and no fix in sight. It says our recall was "remedied", but even the service department said that there is no guaranteed fix because FCA has not released anything to actually fix this issue. We were without our truck for almost a month. Ridiculous. DO NOT BUY THIS TRUCK, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!
Husbands car started making a ticking noise and was loosing power while driving, so we brought it into the dealership. It will be $5796.58 to fix the rocker arms and camshaft. The estimate is for rocker arm roller failed damaging the camshaft. We are thankful that it has not caused any major incidents while driving that would casue serious harm to him and others on the road. Upon doing research we have found that this is a common issue with the engine that is in his Ram 1500, 2016. It was sold to us and we were not informed that this could be an issue. Again, we are thankful that he was not hurt before we were able to get it to the dealership.
The truck lost all steering capability - the RAM dealership said it needs a complete steering electric power steering system replacement, totaling over $4,000.
The tailgate fell open while in motion. Now it won't latch closed unless I hold it up and lock it with the mechanical key or the keyfob. Online research indicates that recal # U74 should have included this truck but I was never notified. I am the second owner and acquired this truck 05/05/2018.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle lost automotive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the crankshaft position sensor tone wheel had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V475000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 127,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving downhill 50-55 MPH and towing a boat, the brake pedal became hard. The brake pedal was hard to depress. The ABS and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V653000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic, Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who used a code scanner and determined that the failure was related to the ABS module. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 20–25 MPH, the steering became inoperable. The contact was unable to control the vehicle and crashed into the curb, and the passenger side tire popped. The driver continued to drive and parked. The contact changed the tire, and upon starting the vehicle, the tire and traction control warning lights illuminated. The contact noticed the passenger side fender and rim were scraped from the cement. The contact stated that the failure was due to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V167000 (Steering). There were no reported injuries, airbag deployment, or police report filed. The contact called the local dealer, who scheduled an appointment. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
Warning lights have illuminated for ABS, Traction Control and Brake. Same as Safety Recall Report 24V-896, but that Safety Recall Report does not currently include 2016 1500 RAM models. I believe that Safety Recall Report should be expanded to include the 2016 1500 RAM model.
Brake Warning light on, ABS light on, traction control light on, cruse control disabled, 4 wheel drive disabled. Appears to be same issue as NHTSA Recall Number24V-896 but on 2016 Dodge Ram 1500.
ABS system is lighting up on the dash clusters. Have the problem checked by the dealer in November and they are unable to make repairs until inspectors make approve the part.
I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with unrepairable brake problems. My ABS system went out in November 2024 and was told that I need a new control module to make repairs. the problem is there are no module in the United States. They need to come from a foreign country and that they need to be inspected. This was to be completed by January 15, 2025. I am still unable to get the repairs. Under Pa. inspection I will need the repairs. They are now saying some time by the end of April it may be available. This sound similar to the recalls to the 2017 Ram 2500 where there is a problem with the ABS System. This is putting me and my family at risk, but I need a vehicle. My dealer is Faulkner Dodge, Mechanicsburg, Pa. 17055
I am experiencing the loss of Power Steering I have the Electronic Power Steering issue that a lot of people are having. I have been to 2 mechanics and one being the dealer that says the power steering is faulty and its the same issue that a lot of others are having but Ram tells me that my truck is just out of the recall dates by a couple months and there is nothing they can do they say so I am reaching out to try and get help with this as it is the same issues on the recal
The ABS module has failed. As such, the anti-lock brakes, nor the electronic brakes for braking a trailer do not work. This is a safety hazard as when towing you might not be able to stop in time to avoid an accident. I tried to get this fixed at a RAM dealership, but was informed this item has been on backorder for over 1.5 years and there are several other customers waiting for this part. So, I escalated at RAM and the escalation representative replied stating that they are waiting for production approval. They have been waiting on production approval for over 1.5 years for this safety issue. What is going to take, someone getting seriously injured or killed to get RAM to provide this safety item? As I mentioned, RAM is aware of this issue, but are not doing what it takes to address. It would be great if you can put pressure on RAM to make this safety item a priority. Also, it would be great if it came in form of a recall, but being able to get this part so that I can safely operate my vehicle is my main priority. Anything that you can do in addressing this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
ABS Code C2200-49, anti-lock brake module internal electronic failure. Have not been able to source a new ABS control module for my vehicle. Apparently Dodge/Mopar/Chrysler has stopped producing this part. No ABS makes it dangerous to drive in the snowy/wet conditions prevalent during the winter months, especially in New York State. ABS, traction control, and brake lights are illuminated on dash. Owners manual states that the vehicle should not be driven with the brake light illuminated. Don’t really have a choice but to drive the vehicle, as I can’t afford to park the vehicle for an unknown period of time until the new module becomes available.
WArning light to service shifter, service electronic thorottle control and service ABS system, Computers not comunicating due to computer error, found fuse blown and high resistance in the power districution center. replaced and programmed the power distribution module to find anitlock brake model failed. Part is currenlty on engineering hold. We have not been able to ddrive the vehicle since 11/8/2024 and now they are telling us it may be February till part is realeased. There was a safety recall U07 that was repair but the ABS module is the part controlling all items that are failing.
While driving My Dodge Ram 1500 on the freeway at 65 MPH the steering wheel locked up and I had no control over my vehicle. The vehicle put everyone on the freeway in danger, including myself. Each time this happened the engine light and the light for the traction control system came on. This has happened multiple times and each time I have reported it to the dealership, they say they can not help me unless it happens while they are driving it. Please address this before someone gets hurt because of my steering column locking up.
Lost acceleration, check engine light and warning light came on ‘Service Electronic Throttle Control’ Diagnostic code P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Truck has issues starting, once running, it idles rough and is in limp mode Appears to correspond with Safety Recall W68 / NHTSA 20V-475
My steering wheel only turns violently to the right (I have a video that will not upload). My husband almost broke his thumb when it happened. Thankfully no one was injured. However, we were about to leave on a 1200-mile trip when this happened. This problem will not go away. Ram has refused to even look at the truck even though there is a recall on this in 1500 Ram trucks including diesels like mine, but not my vin#. There was absolutely no warning before this happened. We are grateful we were not on the highway when this happened, or I would not be able to write this to you today. I called Ram customer service on 11/6 and disconnected right when they were giving me the case number. I called back on 11/7 to get the case number and was informed that the last person never created one. She created 2 case numbers for me, 1 to look at the vehicle as this is a major safety issue and another one for my rental car expense and told me I would be contacted in 4 business days. On the 4th day I called customer support back and they told me to tow it to a local dodge dealership and confirmed which one to send it to that was close. I called to have it towed there and called customer service back to let them know and the women told me that they denied my claim on 11/8 and in addition she informed me that she also had me tow it to a non-authorized dealer. I was never notified and why did they have me tow my vehicle to a dealer if they never planned on looking at the vehicle. Also, they let me eat this cost and the cost to tow it out of there. I need my truck back and I can no longer afford the rental car in addition to $3800 (right now) to fix the truck so I am having "My Mechanic" (name of shop) fix this issue and I am paying out of pocket. However, they can only find an OEM part and I am afraid that this part may end up being faulty as well.
The power steering quit the steering was very different to use and make turns. There is a steering wheel icon in red and message that says to service power steering. I took into dealer after a day they got the code to reset I drove home and the code came back on and I lost power steering again and the steering icon is back on. The dealer says you will have to replace the power steering module which doesn’t seam right if they can temporarily get it to clear
The abs module has gone out and there's a nationwide hold on the part. The date keeps getting extended on release which tells me you all know there is a problem. Our truck has been sitting for months due to the issue but we are still expected to pay for something we can't even drive. Something needs to be done to correct this problem because there are lots of vehicles with the same issue which is very concerning seeing as how this is a safety feature.
the a pillar on the right side of the windshield is rusted and the trim falling off which could rollover safety and parts flying off and possibly striking other vehicles on the road.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 40 MPH, he heard the sound of the tailgate opening independently. When the contact stopped the vehicle, he observed that the tailgate was open and he was able to raise and secure the tailgate. The contact stated that later he was starting the vehicle and saw that the tailgate was again open, however, he was not able to secure the tailgate. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The contact called a local dealer and was informed that he would need to bring the vehicle in for a diagnostic check. The contact asked if there was an open recall. The contact was advised by the dealer that NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V486000 (Structure, Latches/Locks/Linkages) had been completed on the vehicle by a previous owner and he was no longer covered by the recall. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.
ABS module on the vehicle has failed. Took it to be diagnosed and was told the code was that there was an internal component failure and the module would need to be replaced as it is a common issue. Intermittent service power steering message while driving and power steering stops working making vehicle has to maneuver at low speeds. Power steering returns after the vehicle is shut off and restarted. Have not been able to be reproduced for dealer to diagnose.
