NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The air ride system automatically inflates and deflates while driving, the truck tilts to one side because it only raises one side. It effects driving and the vehicle pulls to one side
My suspension didn't work. It was riding on the frame. The power steering is very difficult to turn. The front control screen is not turning on.
The transmission control valve is taking over the truck. It is a huge safety concern. You have NO CONTROL over the vehicle when it happens.
Ram 1500 Exhaust Manifold Exhaust in passenger cabinet causing sore throat, headache and asthma exacerbation. Loud ticking sound when starting and acceleration.
the failed component is the ABS control module. this is very common with these trucks. parts have been on back order for years. The result of this failed component is no ABS and no traction control which is a huge safety issue. the Engine fault code is C2200.
My 2017 Ram 1500 suffered a complete failure of the electronic power steering (EPS). The truck became unsafe to drive — steering assist cut out suddenly, and warning lights appeared. A professional mechanic removed the rack-and-pinion and found it completely filled with water and mud, despite no external damage. This is a sealed electronic unit — contamination like this points directly to a manufacturing defect. FCA issued Recall S19 (NHTSA 16V-167) for this same EPS failure in 2015–2016 models, yet they refuse to help because my VIN isn’t “covered.” This is unacceptable. Same part, same failure, same safety risk. The truck only has 63k miles, and an active NHTSA investigation (2023) and recent class actions (2024–2025) confirm this is a widespread problem. I’m asking NHTSA to push for a full recall expansion and hold FCA accountable. This is a serious safety issue with real consequences. My steering wheel completely locked up while I was driving with my 5 year old daughter in the truck on Christmas Day no less. It could have been much worse.
In my 2017 dodge ram 1500 big horn, the rack and pinioning computer system failed while driving it. Dealer ship stated it was a pretty common failure and the parts are normally in high demand. After doing research it appears that the years around 2017 have had recalls on the same part but the 2017 does not. If the system failed while someone unfamiliar with driving a car with no power steering it could cause wrecks and serious health problems.
While driving several times since purchasing it the vehicles steering had completely locked and I've had to slam on brakes in middle of traffic before i crash several times, very close to causing serious injuriesto myself or others and possibly death. This has happened numerous times since i bought it. I took it to the dealership where I purchased it, they said they fix it in 2021 it has happend several times since then also, im scared to drive it. Or it will get super lose like a joy stick, but won't turn at all. Ive taken it to several other dealerships for diagnosis with similar results. Now when i brought it to the dealership where i purchased they're saying they have to charge to diagnosis it again when I have several other diagnosis stating same problem plus i brought it here in 2021 same problem. so there own diagnosis which should be in system, ive went to another dodge dealership for diagnosis and auto separate auto repair shop who confirmed the same electrical power steering issues. They even printed papers stating the 2015-2016 ram had same problem and recalls on same steering wheel issues.
Truck was lowered to the entry/exit position using the adjustment buttons for the factory air suspension while in park when picking up my daughter from school. When attempting to raise the truck back to the normal ride height setting, the rear of the truck raised but the front did not and will not. Also the rear will not lower back down to match the front now either.
experiencing total power steering loss, and intermittent loss of power steering
Driving truck down the road heard a loud pop, engine stalled. Found oil leaking under truck. Dealer said it’s a known issue with the engine and would not cover replacement cost. Truck only has 90k miles. Engine failure while driving could have resulted in a major accident.
The contact owns a 2017 RAM 1500. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the "Immediate Air Suspension Service Repair Required" warning message Illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle and the warning message functionality returned. The vehicle was taken independent mechanic where there was an unknown diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to a lawsuit article he read online. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving on a neighborhood street at 28 MPH and approaching a stop sign, the vehicle experienced a loss of automotive power, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle coasted and came to a stop while the contact was pumping the brake pedal. The contact restarted the vehicle. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,035.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds in a parking lot, the power steering function was inoperable. There was loss in communication with the rack and pinion. The power steering service message was displayed. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V167000 (Steering). The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that a power steering rack replacement was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed there was no recall on the VIN for the failure. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,851.
Vehicle has 55k miles on it. Started leaking oil out of the blue over 6 oz per day. Looked around to try and identify where the leak was coming from and it was on the upper end of the engine. Thought it may have been the oil filter gasket, but my mechanic said the oil cooler was cracked. and he claimed that it is a very common failure for this make/model due to the part being made mostly of plastic components. Plastic parts in constant contact with 240 degree oil seems to be no bueno.
Loss of steering in cold weather. Electronic Power Steering warning light comes on saying service power steering. This is the same issue that Ram 2013-2016 models were already recalled for. Safety issue when power steering goes out while driving in cold weather, extremely hard to turn the steering wheel to get the truck off the road to a safe place. Parts are not readily available, long back orders, and $3k repair quote. Problem is reproducible by the dealer.
I was driving my truck one day and it went into limp mode. Took it to the dealership and they diagnosed the engine and came to the conclusion it's the egr. But I had the egr recall done in 21, but now this egr has malfunction and has totalled my engine. Now my powertrain warranty won't cover this issue and I believe the solution was never fixed but a band aide in the matter. Is there anything yall can do.
Rear Sliding window stuck open and unable to get window to close. Checked online and found that this is an issue that multiple people are reporting. Contacted Dodge and they inform since vehicle is out of warranty that they cant assist. This vehicle is garage kept and is very well taken care of. Non-working windows are a safety issue. There could be multiple reasons that the window is non-functional. This should be a recall for Ram.
Fuel sensor issues. 100's of complaints on Fuel Sensors and many reported to NHTSA. The gas gauge will not work and check engine light on, when checking code it is P0463,that is fuel sensor issue. It is dangerous not to know how much fuel is in tank. Again very common issue on Rams with 40K miles and less. Ram know about all these cases. It is a common problem that is ignored by Ram.
I keep getting the service electronic stability control along with abs, no traction control,no remote start and no power whatsoever when I drive it happens mainly when it's cold outside but we have had this issue before and it was in and out of the dealerships garage for 8 months and the problem eventually went away after it got warm outside again. It is getting cold and now we can no longer drive our vehicle safely. I have heard of the recal of the 2019 and 2021-2025 models but I'm very confused as to why the other models aren't also recalled as there are thousands of complaints about the same or similar problems with my specific year of truck and others. Please fix this I am at a loss with my 40,000 truck that has 6 years left until it's paid off and I can't even drive it again.
There is an extended warranty on the defective gas tank strap bracket, “X75”. When this part broke it caused damage to my driveshaft and to my fuel tank. The dealer says only the strap bracket is covered. This should be a recall, not an extended warranty. Damaged fuel tanks are a safety concern, and all damage caused by the failed bracket should be covered.
Hemi 5.7 lifters and ate up crank had to replace engine with 79000 miles and now I keep getting random misfire ordered ecm and it want let alt charge they say it’s in our wiring
ABS control unit failure. Part number is 68295368AA. Dealer cannot fix problem due to no part being available. I've researched this issue online and found that they've issued 2 additional part numbers to replace the unit with, both are on backorder with the manufacturer. I managed to search online for all 3 part numbers and was able to locate one of them, the latest version actually and have ordered it. Here's the main issue. This is a well known and wide spread problem with the 2017-2018 Ram 1500 trucks, also why parts are not available at the dealer. When the ABS control unit fails, the ABS, traction control, trailer brake assist, and cruise control are INOP. This is a major safety issue while driving the vehicle and problematic when you can't easily get the problem repaired. I am out of warranty coverage as are most who have the same problem. I feel FCA should step up and do a Recall of these trucks and fix with a quality part before someone gets killed.
Front gas tank strap pulled through frame while driving down highway, after checking the spot in the frame was severely corroded/rusted. Gas tank was hanging off bottom of truck, with strap hitting against driveshaft. Vehicle was purchased about 3 months ago from dealership with no notation of this issue. No warnings or signs prior to event happening.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated the gear shift/rotary dial had seized in place. The vehicle failed to shift into park, and the key failed to release from the ignition switch. While driving, the vehicle jumped from park to reverse and then drive. The drive, reverse, park, and neutral warning lights were illuminated. While at a stop, the vehicle locked. While depressing the accelerator pedal, there was an abnormal revving sound detected. The vehicle was hesitating and was slow to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed as an electrical failure. The dealer informed the contact that the control module was not communicating with the TCM. The dealer scheduled an appointment. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also called Marion Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram 44 Worley Rd., Marion, NC 28752, Auto Star Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat of Waynesville (280 Hyatt Creek Rd., Waynesville, NC 28786), and Crossroads Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Henderson (120 US-158, Henderson, NC 27536). The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 140,829.
There is a recall 66-A for this vehicle that was repaired Nov.21,2023. This recall for this Vin truck is a system update on the electric throttle control. There is another part of this recall that some vehicles have then had the crankshaft position to be off due to the tonewheel magnetic strip to break. This happened after the initial system update was done last year. This vin should also be covered under the recall for the tonewheel breaking. I am requesting it to be covered under the recall and reimbursement for the 1837.82 cost.
My ABS module is bad. I have no traction control, or cruise control. My truck shows service trailer brake system, service electronic braking system, and service antilock brake system. I took it to my mechanic in October 2024 and he said there is no part available from Dodge. I took it to a Dodge dealer April 6, 2025 and they were going to send the ABS module off to be rebuilt, said it would take 3 to 4 days. They then called and said it would take one month to rebuild. I went and got my truck back, since I can’t be without it for a month. There are many owners on a forum for Ram 1500 with the same issue. Some are trading theirs in for a different vehicle because of this issue.
Lost eps while pulling my Travel Trailer. Was able to get stopped without incident. Restarted vehicle and had eps. On another occasions ,started vehicle and no eps. This has become a problem any time the outside temperature is below 65 degrees. Can usually get eps after letting engine warm up.
Experiencing intermittent loss of power steering making it difficult to turn or maneuver the vehicle, which is more prevalent during colder temperatures. A safety issue is created by the inability to react quickly or control the vehicle in certain situations, such as icy or snowy road conditions where loss of traction occurs. A diagnostic scan has been performed and a code was recorded for a short circuit, or low voltage, to the power steering. Code for power steering was first noticed in July, 2024. Intermittent loss of power steering was first noticed in October, 2024. Code was cleared and has not returned. However, the most recent diagnostic run is now showing a code for, “Battery Voltage - circuit voltage below threshold” (C2129-16). Other codes are present for open/short circuit for the passenger door module as well. Between July and October other electrical related issues were experienced. This includes incorrect reading of heading/direction displayed on dash (showing N when driving S) and complete loss of function of radio controls in center stack. Both issues occurred at seemingly randomly instances and were often corrected by turning the vehicle off and back on, have not occurred since October, 2024.
I drove from NC to Philadelphia in early October 2024. I parked at Delta Hotel near Philadelphia airport and stayed the night for a 6am appointment with my physician. At approx. 5:30 am, I exited the hotel to drive to my physician appointment. When I started the truck, a dashlight flashed (service power steering) and I had no power steering. The weather was about 40 degrees and winds about 20 mph. Without power steering, I drove approx. 10 miles to my physician appointment. I parked in a parking garage. At approximately 10 am, I had completed my physician appointment. I went to the truck and started it up. Service light was now off, and I drove back to NC without incident. For the past 1.5 months, I assessed the problem. Basically, if the temperature is less than 50 degrees, I have no power steering. if it is over 50 degrees, steering operation is normal, and the (service power steering) is not illuminated. Currently the truck is in the garage attached to the house. Typically the garage temperature is 58 degrees. In the garage, the steering operation is normal and no warning messages are displayed. When the vehicle exits garage and encounters cooler than 50 degree air, the problem resurfaces.

The NTSB requires that the manufacturer install ABS and SRS systems on the vehicle. The manufacturer, Ram is having issues supplying repair parts, the Anti Lock Break Control module is on national backorder with no idea of when it will be available. This is a serious safety issue and someone needs to review and determine if this can be corrected. I as well as many other vehicles are on the road without this important safety feature.
Lights are on for the abs system and stabilizer. Took car to mechanic and they indicated that the module needs to be replaced as described by the information posted.from other cars similar issues. No recall has been posted for my module and it costs over $1,200 TO FIX. My 2017 ram 1500 laramie needs to be on recall list to fix the same issues. This issue presented it self when I was make a left turn. Abs and stable control Lights went on.
The car has hit the brakes multiple times by itself on the highway. The car also does not have traction control anymore and I almost lost control with both of my kids in the car when I went to speed up and pass someone. Since the car is rear wheel drive, I almost spun out but I let go of the gas and kept my wheel straight and it aligned itself back to normal. I’ve been in contact with the dealership about the abs problems and they said it’s a computer that is on back order for someone reason. This is very dangerous and I’ve read many reports online of how it’s happened to many folks. I constantly have an abs, brake, and traction light on. In addition, the problem Can’t even Be fixed since they don’t have the computer at the dealership. Dodge needs to fix this dangerous problem. It happened today, the spinning out, which is why I am sending this now. But I’ve had multiple issues driving in the highway with the car braking by itself due to the abs computer having an issue that dodge knows about.
I was driving and electric steering went out and almost crashed few to no way you can steer it cause front end damage
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH out of the driveway, the ABS warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
ABS system went down on my truck, brakes still work but no ABS system! Received no recall papers even though the truck is a 2017 Dodge Ram and 2017 trucks are under recalls.
1) Exhaust Manifold and exhaust bolts. Cause exhaust leak and puts me at risk of exhaust coming into passenger area. Ticking on cold start up til warms up. It's been reproduced and diagnosed at dealership. Exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold bolts are a well known issue that's has been reported multiple times and seems to be ignored. 2) Ignition Lock Cylinder on start up intermittently it sounds as if gets stuck turning over and will power up for 1-2 secs and shut off. Been reproduced at dealership. 3)Evap system code.
Power steering control not working. It's getting power but not engaging the motor.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the ABS, traction control, and brake warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who informed the contact that the module was not available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.
Loss of dash display engine shuts down and no control of anything including steering very dangerous
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle stalled. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was unable to pull to the side of the road. The contact stated that upon shifting to park(P) to restart the vehicle, the vehicle failed to restart, and the gear shifter remained stuck in park(P). The vehicle was dragged to the side of the road. The vehicle was then towed to Mike Creech Automotive, where it was diagnosed with the crank position sensor tone wheel failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V475000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the crank position sensor tone wheel had delaminated and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
Was driving down highway and steering wheel locked up and service power steering alarm came on, almost hit an oncoming car in opposite flow of traffic. Shut truck off and re started it and was able to limp the truck home on back roads with the steering still intermittently giving out. Got it home and called service to get it scheduled and had to have it towed as steering went fully out and the shop said the whole electronic power steering rack and pinion went out and needs replaced, now I have to cough up over $4300 to fix it on a new truck, let alone im scared to death to drive it as the shop said this is an ongoing problem with a lot of Ram pickups due to water getting into the EPS board and shorting it out. Ram needs to recall this!! I had my girlfriend and baby in the truck with me and we could have all gotten hurt when the steering went out down the highway.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road where the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the tone wheel and the crankshaft position sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer charged a repair fee and informed the contact that the repair could not be covered under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V411000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) because the recall only covered the PCM software update. The vehicle was being repaired. The contact related the parts replacement to Chrysler Campaign Number: D-21-10. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under the campaign. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.
The electronic power steering (EPS) system failed while driving down the road. Lost the ability to steer the vechical and came close to having a accident head on.we had to cost down the road way until we reached the shoulder. The truck has 80,000 miles . Yes the warning lamp lit up once the system stopped operating properly not before we lost the ability to steer, the warning was a steering wheel and ! Point. There was no pre warning. Had to have the truck trailered back home.
the truck drove just fine the day before, got into the truck and turned it on got a "service steering" light and message. tried to turn the steering wheel and it will not turn. IT read multiple codes as i have a code reader, checked power and fuses and everything was good but one code keeps coming up c2217 which seems to be associated with a recall for the 2015-16 and 2019 rams. my truck is stuck in my driveway and can not turn the steering wheel to drive safely. luckily i was not driving like some others have been.
Electric power steering failed suddenly while making a left turn, on a two lane highway, left me in the oncoming lane with risk for near head on collision. My [XXX] old old drives this truck, she would not have had the strength to turn the wheel enough to avoid collision or hit a tree. No signs of this problem before incident, took me by surprise. The service power steering light came on after and continues. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The electric power steering failed while driving with no warning. The first time while making a right hand turn, the steering very suddenly lost all power assist and it was near impossible to keep control through the turn. After a few seconds it began to work again. Several miles later while traveling approx 60 mph it happened again and I was barely able to keep it on the road until I could show down and pull off to the side. After shutting the car off for about 20 mins. I started the truck and it worked all the way home about 5 miles. For a couple days if I disconnected the negative battery cable for a while it would work again until I shut off the truck. And then it started happening intermittently while driving so I parked the truck until it could be fixed. After some research I learned there is a recall on the 2013's to 2016's for the same problem with many exact complaints about 2017's. For two weeks I've been searching for a new steering rack (part number 68628857AA) and there are none available with backorders of 45+ plus days with dealerships telling me they have customers who have been waiting 6 months for one. It's a $2000 - $3000 part depending on the dealership. They want you to pay for it and wait 6 months to get it which is absolutely absurd. Please help!
Power steering failed while driving. Replace the power steering rack (dealership replaced it). It still failing due to the torque sensor or the steering wheel, a steering wheel angle sensor being faulty,. Very dangerous if the vehicles power steering randomly stops doing its job while in motion.
