NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Data synced from NHTSA on May 4, 2026
1.The components that failed were the entire rear dif. It will be available for inspection and I will make certain that my mechanic takes photos. 2. My brakes completely locked up on me TWICE and the vehicle stalled. I was left in the middle of the road on a downward slope and on a curve, a blind spot. I was extremely fortunate that this didn't take place on the interstate and that there wasn't a tractor trailer following behind me!! 3. My mechanic verified that it was in fact the rear differential that was destroyed. The inside of the casing was "chewed up" by the gears. He called around and was able to locate a slightly used one to attempt to save me money and it was easier for him to complete the task of replacing it. 4. There are no police reports or insurance claims. 5. There were no warning lamps to alert me that anything was wrong. The only thing that took place was the truck lost power TWICE while traveling on the interstate where I was forced to stop in the break down lane. Both situations could have ended MUCH WORSE for me.
Took to the shop explained that our EGR was replace at the fresno crystler dodge dealership with same OEM part not the new fix because it didn't exist they closed the account and now EGR went out again and they refuse to replace the original recalled part truck because it has been 4 years since replaced and is sitting in the north knox dodge dealer with the EGR completely malfunctioned leaking coolant blowing smoke and smells like it's about to catch fire and both dealerships refuse to replace the part
Ram has known for years that they have Exhaust Manifold issues but will not recall any of the Hemi engines affected. Many complaints start in 2015 and go into 2020 models. They say it is a known issue, but no recall. This defect causes a ticking noise when a cold start and goes away, what doesn't go away is the leaking of exhaust from the manifold that can enter the cabin. This could be very serious.
The cruse control comes one when it wants to this is an intermittent problem and gives no warnings it has happened several times since we bought the truck
I pulled in a parking spot came back an hour later started my truck put it in reverse I had no steering, I pulled forward put in park then reverse. My steering was not there. Turning the trick off and back on no warning lights. After sitting for 2 hrs I turned the truck on a red light started flashing. Service power steering . I just bought the truck so I took it back to the dealership big Joe's auto. My dad attempted to drive it and put it in the ditch because he could not steering. The dealership would not send a tow truck.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the steering wheel became stiff. The power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the local dealer along with Vaden Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Brunswick (912) 456-8371), and Jacksonville Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Arlington (904) 414-4746) were notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 179,955.
Was driving my truck on vacation and the steering locked up and is stuck! Rack and pinion fail diagnosed by the dealer.
It's muffler is totally broken
I was driving my truck and out of no where started to lose speed, pulled over immediately and lost all power. I didn’t drive my truck anymore because I noticed a knocking noise when I was able to get it back on. I contacted mopar and was advised to take in my truck for open recalls because of the High pressure fuel pump seemed to be exactly what happened to my ram. I took in my truck for the recalls, was called three days later and told I needed to replace all 6 fuel injectors costing me $5000.00, recall states high pressure fuel pump has to be replaced along with any damaged fuel components. Dealer tells me high pressure fuel pump was not broken. I know it was failing because of what happened to my ram.
Truck was consuming coolant and you could smell it but can't see a leak then the service electronic throttle control light came on a few weeks later with a code reading P0402. This was a recall and has been replaced but was replaced before they had the proper fix for it. Dropped it off at dodge dealer this morning for further diagnosis.
The electrical power steering completely went out. Thankfully right before getting on interstate. It is locked up with no give at all. The dealership it is at says he hasn't had 1 like this hardly at all where you can't steer what so ever. This happened at an intersection. Recalls on 2014 to 2016 of these trucks were done and why if the steering completey locks up like this is there not one on this year?
Power steering suddenly stopped working. Same description as the other model years involved in the recall. Electric power steering goes out randomly, replacement part is extremely expensive, and nearly impossible to find available. This truck was this truck was produced in 2016 although model year 2017. Electric power steering is the same for the 13’-16’ model years. 2017 should be included in the recall.
I was involved in an accident where a car pulled out in front of me causing my truck to T-bone them. I estimate I was traveling at 40 mph or so at the time of impact. My airbags did not deploy during this impact. I have never had an issue with the air bag system on this vehicle, but believe the dealership had performed a recall or flashed some software within the last 3 years pertaining to the airbag. I'm not sure if the computer detected the impact and decided not to deploy the airbags, or if they should have deployed and the system was faulty? I am a larger man and am glad the seatbelt restrained me, but am afraid someone with smaller stature, or unable to brace themselves before impact would not have faired as well. As it is, I am on day 4 of neck, back and whole body aches and whiplash which has caused a constant unbearable headache with light and sound sensitivity in the harsh summer that probably could have been lessened had the airbag stopped me?
As of a week ago I was driving and had a message come up on my dash stating that the engine is running hot. After looking I noticed half the coolant was missing, so I added more. A few days later I decided to check and yet again it’s low, shortly later the check engine comes on. I did a check on codes and my sensors are mostly being affected by what’s happening.Fast forward to June 16, 2024 I drive to work after adding more coolant that was down by half. After all this time I never seen a leak but only smelled it in my exhaust. I tried to move the vehicle into the shade and the vehicle won’t turn over
Complete loss of power steering resulting in a near head on collision with another motorist. Cause of the loss of power steering was determined to be electronic components of the circuit board located inside of the steering rack had short circuited.
I am writing this letter about a vehicle I purchased in November 2023. The vehicle purchased was a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 Diesel from Rick Chevrolet in Virginia Beach VA. The truck has many defects. The first month I took it back for a leaking tire, broken windshield, oil leak and because it drove funny and I did not know what was wrong with it, but I knew something was wrong. They kept the truck for approximately a week or two. In April I hit a pothole in Norfolk off [XXX] and I didn’t know what had happened to the truck. I left it in Norfolk until the next morning because I could not get a tow truck to come out that night. I had my truck towed to Dodge, Ram and FIAT in Norfolk VA. They told me the Tie Rod, Axle, had broken. The Dealer then, told me that the truck would not align so they sent it to the Collision Center. The collision center told me that the truck had a bent frame and it did not happen due to the pothole. That the truck was a death trap and I need not to drive it that the dealer should not have sold me that truck. I went and talked to the Manager at Rick Chevrolet named Kerry and he said we could swap the truck, but I had to make a down payment of an excessive amount due to my credit. I did not know that this truck was a nightmare and I feel why should I have to pay for someone selling me a truck that can kill me and whoever is riding with me. I bought the truck because they are supposed to be safe. This is ridiculous and the dealership is not trying to help me out of this by putting me in a safe vehicle. I am paying for something that is going to cause me bodily harm or my life, and they want me to pay more to get into a safe vehicle. This truck should not have been sold and because it was, they need to take responsibility and swap me out of this death trap. Can you please look into this matter. The collision center gave me copies of what they did, and what they found wrong with the truck and a picture of frame being bent. Suddenly and without any warning my power steering started to get unresponsive and difficult to safely navigate corners or stay in my lane. The truck only has 59,000 miles on it and I wouldn't think that is enough to make the steering rack fail. I know that there was a recall for the 2014 -2016 1500s so I was wondering if my 2017 was affected by the same issues? I am feeling unsafe driving this vehicle but it is my only transportation to work. What is the the best next step for me to resolve this without any out of pocket expenses if this is a recall issue?
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 45-50 MPH, the vehicle started shuddering violently and was pulling to the left and to the right. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the front lower control arms had detached and the front subframe was fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. An unknown dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Vehicle is a 2017 RAM 3.0L ECO-DIESEL. Vehicle's electronic throttle control service light came on. Vehicle was taken to dealership for diagnostic. Safety recall 66A/NHTSA 23V-411 was performed for software. Transmission was diagnosed with a bad Tone Wheel (RAM recall X94-Warranty Extension. Applies to RAM vehicles built on or after June 13, 2014 and on or before March 26, 2018 equipped with a 3.0L Turbo Diesel Engine). My vehicle is the make, type, model, and engine specific vehicle, however; it does not meet the VIN specificity for the X94 extended warranty coverage. I would like to know why.
The power steering went out while driving. I don’t know why. All I know is it’s not safe for that to happen. I guess that why the recall was about. This truck did not get the steering issue fixed.now it definitely should be taking care of since I’m unable to drive without it. I’ve had shops look at it and they found the recalls
Power steering stop work and takes extreme force to turn it. Almost drove off a t-intersection when came time to turn with no warning.
Electronic power steering intermittent failure w service light. Dealer informed no parts available for replacement. Previous recalls on other models ram 1500 with same issues.
Out driving and power steering stopped working making it very difficult to turn the steering wheel especially on slow turns. Having it in the repair shop tomorrow to see what issues and cost to fix.
was driving stopped at stop sign. went to turn left and message popped up stating " service power steering" truck lost power steering had to break and reverse due to almost hitting pole and not being able to turn left. put truck in park. turned truck off turned truck back on and power steering message still was there. no prior warnings prior to driving truck. no other issues prior to power steering failure. My safety was at risk where I could of crashed vehicle into pole. my husband called dealer and is awaiting a call back. As of 4/16 no call back yet. Vehicle is sitting in driveway now due to not being able to drive safely with it with power steering loss.
My power steering started to get "sticky points" and then today I lost all power steering. After a Google search I checked the fuses and both were fine. But it seems to be a issue with this generation of trucks. And I saw that they're looking into the problem and may issue a recall in the future
Intermittent electric power steering loss. One minute it is easy to turn then the next it is like it is fighting against you and is hard to turn. It happens at slower speeds more often .
I was driving on a highway on a rainy day when I felt a small vibration in the front end of my truck. Suddenly, the service electric steering system light comes on my dash and I can't hardly turn the steering wheel. I lost all power steering in my truck, occasionally it would try to turn on while trying to drive it home, then the service steering light would come on and jerk the steering wheel in my hand, which is very hard to hold on to and I'm a big guy. If this were to happen to a smaller person, I'm not sure how they would be able to keep from going in the ditch or worse, rolling the truck. This I was told by a ram dealership is due to a faulty rack and pinion steering system, which is a $2800 fix. I'm honestly glad it wasn't my wife or kids driving the truck, this could have been way worse!
When turning right or left a continuous speeds, the vehicle loses power steering altogether or snaps the steering wheel back
While driving to work this morning the power steering went out with no warning. I was driving on the highway and the steering wheel started jerking and then became very stiff. Had I been in a curve when this happened I could have easily gone off the road or into oncoming traffic. I was able to slow down and limp my truck to work. I am on shift for 24 hours so I have not been able to have a mechanic look at it yet but I have done a lot of research today and multiple people have had very similar problems. There was even a recall on the 2016 ram 1500 for the exact same problem. When I began investigating my own vehicle I checked all associated fuses which were good. I also checked to make sure power was getting to the electronic power steering module plug and determined that it was. While I was under the truck checking I discovered that the rack and pinion had already been replaced. This is a very serious safety issue that is apparently happening in multiple vehicles, multiple times. This component and my truck are available for inspection as long as I have them.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 10 MPH, the vehicle began to make an abnormal sound. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel tank was detaching. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
The NTSB requires that the manufacturer install ABS and SRS systems on the vehicle. The manufacturer is having issues supplying repair parts , the Anti Lock Break Control module is on national back order with no idea of when it will be available. This is a serious safety issue and someone needs to review and determine if this can be corrected. I as well as many other vehicles are on the road without this important safety feature.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle hesitated to respond. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure recurred intermittently. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V475000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
I was driving down the road at 30 mph and my steering wheel seized, I got a check steering alarm on my dash.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that after pulling out of the driveway and making a turn, the steering wheel failed to return to the center. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while turning. The contact stated that it was increasingly more difficult to turn the steering wheel back to center manually. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.
The power steering is intermittently getting very difficult control. There seems to be "tight spots " turning right and left. This issue is getting progressively worse. I have not lost control of the vehicle yet but it is getting worse and I rely on this vehicle for transportation to and from work
The ABS module on my vehicle is causing warning lights on my dashboard. I ran an analysis and it says the ABS Electronic module is bad. I have tried to obtain a replacement module and have been unable to locate one. The part number is 68295368AB. Two Dodge dealers have told me the part is under engineering review and they cannot even order the module until May 15, 2024 if then. What is a consumer supposed to do? Drive a possibly unsafe vehicle because Dodge is "reviewing" an obviously frequently failing part? That would seem to place a lot of potentially dangerous vehicles on the road. The part seems to have been produced without any kind of gasket around the edge of the unit, and it is housed next to the front wheel well, where dust and dirt would be present. I have no choice other than to drive this vehicle as is, because I have no other transportation available. I plan to bring this to news media for consumer awareness.
I have water leaking out of both front grip airbags. My warranty started in 2019 as I bought the vehicle new from the dealer. They said this is not covered under the warranty. It is a safety issue and I believe it should be covered.
My daughter and I was parked eating our lunch. When we pulled out onto the busy highway, the power steering completely went out making it impossible to turn. Barely avoided a crash.
A recall was received in June, 2022, regarding High Pressure Fuel Pump failing prematurely. “Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of motive power, which can cause a vehicle to crash without prior warning.”No remedy was available. Today I received another recall notice for the same issue which said to schedule my free repair. I called my dealership at Winter Haven Dodge and was told they were only allowed to order 1 part per month and they had 15 vehicles ahead of me and he will schedule my repair on my turn. I feel that15 months is an unreasonable length of time to wait since I have been waiting for resolution of this matter since June, 2022.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH he observed that a symbol of a steering wheel with an exclamation point appeared. The contact felt the steering wheel had become very hard to turn. The contact pulled off of the road and turned the vehicle off and on several times, however, the power steering functionality did not reengage. The contact drove the vehicle to a dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined the rack and pinon gears and electric power steering gears needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact had researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19E077000 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.
On [XXX], I received a "SERVICE ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM" error on my 2017 Ram 1500 and then "CHECK ENGINE" light came on. I did not drive the truck after that except to bring it to my dealer at first available appointment on [XXX]. I brought the truck to my dealer for repair and after system inspection was told the ABS module and HCU (hydraulic control unit) are faulty and need replacement. The parts are on backorder and not expected for months. This seems to be a known problem with the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. I am told I can operate the truck at my own risk without the repair. I live in Iowa with winter snow and should not have to be concerned with braking issues which put myself and my family at risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Fuel Sensor Failure, check engine light comes on, causes to gas gauge to read empty and will disable mileage and remote start. 57,000 miles.
WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK ON WET ROADS RAINED THE NIGHT BEFORE AND WAS RAINING THAT MORNING, I ROUNDED THE LAST CURVED ON A 30 MPH ROAD AND I WAS ONLY DOING BETWEEN 25 TO 28 I STARTED SLIDING AND TURNED MY WHEEL LEFT HANDED SO HARD THAT IT BROKE THE MULTI FUNCTION SWITCH AND HIT HEAD ON INTO A TREE IT LIFTED THE REAR OF MY TRUCK UP AND SLAMMED IT BACK DOWN I HAD 300 LBS OF SAND RATCHET STRAPPED WITH 2 RACHET STRAPS THE SAND BAGS ARE NOW AT THE CAB PART OF THE BED. NO MESSAGE LIGHTS OF ANY KIND WERE ON THE DASH PRIOR TO THIS ACCIDENT AND MY FRONT AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THAT'S POSSIBLE WITH HITTING A FIRM OBJECT AT 25 MPH TO 28 MPH. THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS INVOLVED WITH THE ACCIDENT AND THE TRUCKS WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP BUT NO WORK HAS BEEN PERFORM ON IT AS OF YET BECAUSE I REQUESTED THE AIRBAGS BE INVESTIGATED.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds up to 40 MPH and turning, the steering wheel was loose. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
Rear axle pinion gear broke causing lack of motion could cause me to wreck or get hit
At 125,000 miles my truck developed a Hemi Tick. Now upon research it is said it is normal, however I don't3 see how such a thing is normal when the possibility of your engine going from running to not running. There have been things stated to try and I have tried them all yet the tick still remains and has actually gotten worse. This vehicle is my main means of transportation to and from. Being a senior it is very difficult for me or my wife to travel to doctors appointments that are very critical to our existence. So what is left? The manufacturer says this is normal but it is not a normal thing for your engine to suddenly quit especially when you maintain regular service on it. This is going on with to many owners and to say it normal is just a way to get away with fixing the issue. Something needs to be done about this issue as so many folks are and have put in tremendous amounts of money in their vehicles to have to turn around and spend another 7500 or so into getting it going again because, "this is normal."
NHTSA 19V-757 recall was performed on 06/09/2020. Diesel EGR Cooler started leaking, again. I have a filing that dealer is still using defective part.
I was going maybe 25mph on wet gravel. I had just put the truck into part time 4x4 because it was starting to snow. With no warming maybe 4 min after part time was activated I got a warning ding and service power steering light and the truck wouldn't turn. I nearly lost control on the snow. Again no warning, it happened all at one and I was unable to control the vehicle. I stopped for maybe 5 min and turned the truck off... when I restarted it the steering worked long enough to turn around on the one way road before the steering once again went out.. no warning just couldn't turn and the light on the dash came on simultaneously. I limped down the mountain at about 10 mph with no power steering. I once again after 30 min or so shut the truck off. Once again when it restarted the power steering works as it should. I'm scared to drive it because it gives no warning before the steering wheele becomes almost impossible to turn. It has since worked on my last two short trips but for how long. And how fast will I be moving the next time it stops working.
while driving the electric power steering failed . light came on an lost power to the steering wheel . could have been killed because, it impossible to steer
The engine intermittently shuts down while running or at idle. This has happened over three months, starting with a two-second (twice) shutdown and restart on its own. In two later shutdowns (two months apart) I needed to restart the engine. The dealer has had the truck for 5 days without finding the problem.
