NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact had received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V653000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) and 24V729000 (STEERING, EXTERIOR LIGHTING); however, the parts to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool shows no open recall.
The uconnect 4 system that controls everything on the vehicle will randomly reboot while being driven, disabling safety systems like reverse cameras during the reboot, and leaving the UI for uconnect incomplete after restart is completed so vehicle settings are not available until vehicle has been turned off for over 10 minutes. I believe that this is due to bugged wifi drivers since it seems to reboot when it tries to connect to android auto. I have video of a reboot showing my truck in reverse for exponentially longer than the required two seconds for the camera to come on but it is too large to upload here.
Vehicle shuts off and engine stalls at slow speeds, then applies electronic e brake for no reason. I have seen multiple reports online for same issue. Then voltage drops until restarting Vehicle which then resets. Went to dealership and they have found code p032f with no fix.
TRUCK WILL STALL. TRUCK PARKING BRAKES INGAGE. THEN TRUCK BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON. HAVE TO RESTART TRUCK. TAKE OFF PARKING BRAKE. WHEN YOUUCAN GET OUT OF TRAFFIC MUST TURN OFF THEN ON TO REMOVE BATTERY LIGHT THAT IS ON
I had an single vehicle accident while visiting Oregon that I have not been able to explain. I have a 2023 Ram Eco Diesel that has a newly issued recall for the Electronic Stability Control failing. My vehicle left the road way and down an embankment after braking for some Wildlife crossing. When I applied the brakes my vehicle went off the left side of the road. The brakes never locked up. After the accident occurred my Electronic Stability Control warning light stayed on, and my Four Wheel Drive unavailable warning light came on as well. My Truck is still undecided as to weather it is totaled or not. It is sitting in a local repair shop waiting on further diagnosis. I had the accident in late August (XXX) and this new ESC recall was sent out and received in early October (03). I think my accident has now been explained. I am having some minor back pain, neck pain and dizziness from my neck stiffness but do not feel painfully injured. But this accident has caused me a whole lot of aggravation. I had to leave my travel trailer in Oregon. I had to pay storage for my travel trailer for a year. $1000. I had to pay for enough repairs to get my vehicle home. $500. I am without a vehicle for, well, nobody knows how long. I will be sending a copy of the recall to my State Farm Claims team. Can I file a lawsuit against Stallantis? (Ram)? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
When using the left turn signal the blinker does not reset after making the turn. Could potentially lead to an accident if other drivers think I intend to turn left and don't. Has not been inspected yet. No system warning lights.
The contact owned a 2023 RAM 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed, however, the vehicle failed to stop as intended. The contact's vehicle rear-rear-ended the vehicle in front of the contact's vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact was informed of an unknown recall repair with a similar failure description. The dealer confirmed that the VIN was associated with the unknown recall repair and the repair was performed. The vehicle was repaired. The other driver's vehicle was towed to a local tow yard, where it was later condemned for total loss. The police and paramedics were at the scene. The contact did not sustain any injuries. The other driver was treated by paramedics. A police report was filed, however, the information was unavailable. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,743.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated that on two occasions while driving approximately 60 MPH, the traction control warning light illuminated and the message "Parking Brake Deactivated" was displayed. The contact stated that during the first failure, the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road, turned off, restarted the vehicle, and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the residence and then to a dealer, where the failure could not be duplicated. During the second occasion, while driving up a bridge, the vehicle lost automotive power and the vehicle decelerated to 28 MPH. The vehicle then coasted down the bridge, and it was pulled over to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted. The check engine warning light became illuminated. The vehicle was parked for several hours during a class, the vehicle was restarted and reset independently, and the warning light was no longer illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
I was in downtown Atlanta traffic, moving around 10 miles per hour. The truck suddenly shut off and applied the parking brake. Once restarted the battery light was displayed on the dash. This has happened approximately 10-12 times in the last year. I was lucky this one did not result in an accident. Please help in getting Ram to realize there is a problem. Thank you!
Automatic Emergency Braking, Is available 2 different occasions, the emergency brakes were engaged at low speeds in traffic areas, the first time was merging into an empty center turn lane at 10 mph or less. The second was approaching a red stop light with vehicles already stopped, again was less than 10 mph when emergency brake engaged I was approximately 30' from the vehicle in front of me. Has not been looked at by dealer No warnings before emergency brake engaged to my knowledge.
Electrical system stops charging, and stalls out the whole truck causing the truck to die in the middle of road and shift into park.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently shifted to a lower speed. The vehicle was driven to the shoulder of the road and the contact turned the vehicle off. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the system was reset. The contact stated that the failure had occurred several times. In addition, the contact stated that the failure occurred while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was scheduled for an upcoming diagnostic test. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Four times the truck has powered down while driving - all were when slowing to turn. No prior warning lights or out-of-spec conditions - battery level reading normal prior to shutdown. Truck shut down the engine automatically. Restarting the truck prompted the battery light but no check-engine light. Emergency brake auto-deployed, stopping the car. In all cases I was stopped in traffic (most recently while crossing a highway), but no accidents. Truck is currently at dealership for diagnostics - preliminary code investigation appears related to the auto-start system causing the engine to shut down. Per dealer, they require input from RAM engineering.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH on the highway, the "Push to Start" message was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to a dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle with fuel pump and fuel pump regulator failure. The fuel pump was replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,900.
While driving I was making a left hand turn to another roadway. All of a sudden I was unable to make the turn because my steering went completely out. I had to make an immediate stop, if not I would have driven into the ditch. Had there been oncoming traffic this steering failure could have caused a fatal accident. The dash warning lite was activated, message was power steering failure. I had the truck towed to the dealership. After two weeks the dealer called and said the electric power steering failed and a new unit would need to be installed. I was told it could be several months before they get a replacement unit in. The vehicle has approximately 1700 miles and I purchased it new approximately 8 months a go. This is certainly a major safety issue that could cause a fatal collision.
275 / 65 R 17 Driving home and when tire popped.
While driving approximately 45mph electronic emergency brakes engaged almost causing wreck. At approximately 20 mph they disengaged and I was able to continue driving. No traffic I'm front of me and no debris to trigger "near miss".
Truck stalled suddenly, indicating a flashing message of electrical error of stability assistant. Truck restarted with a yellow engine light on, but would not allow dial to shift into drive. Automatic correct transmission would pull it back into park. Turned engine on and off several times. Once responsive to Drive option, attempted to leave congested traffic area. Moving for 5 minutes now at 35 mph with emergency lights, Truck stalls again. Engine can be restarted but will not hold in Drive. RAM 1500 is new, owned for 4 weeks now.
Vehicle loses power, then shifts to park and applies the parking brake. This has happened several times in different driving scenarios. Once this happens, the battery fault light appears on the dashboard.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while either starting the vehicle, driving, or parking, the steering wheel was loose and then became tightened. Additionally, there was a burning odor near the front of the vehicle while driving 25 MPH. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the steering rack had failed, and the steering rack lubricant had leaked out, resulting in the burning odor. The dealer replaced the steering rack, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to a second dealer, Nielsen Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram of East Hanover (175 NJ-10, East Hanover, NJ 07936), who replaced the steering shaft and column, as well as the steering rack twice; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Just before I was completely stopped at a red light, the engine died, the transmission shifted to park, and the emergency brake was set. After several minutes and several attempts, the engine started and I was able to drive it home. The only indication something was wrong was the “Check Engine” light was on. That light was off the next morning. I took it to the local Ram dealer to be checked out. The result of the computer diagnosis was “Nonplausable codes.” They said there was nothing they could do. Our fear was (and remains) is that this might happen again while driving at a higher speed in heavy traffic. That could possibly cause serious injury or death, or both. Due to that serious concern, we took it back to the dealer and ask them to keep it for a while to see if it happened with them. While they had it, different personnel drove it over 400 miles, but the problem was not reproduced. Also, no recall has been issued for this model truck. However, there has been a recall for other models with the Etorque engine because of unexpected stalling. We are concerned every time we drive it. In fact, my wife will not drive it nor take the grandkids anywhere in it.
Started vehicle up cold. Drove two miles. Stopped at stop sign for a few seconds, then pull out onto highway. Vehicle stalled and would not accelerate; engine still barely running but no power. Pulled on to shoulder. Vehicle seem to correct it self after about 30 seconds.
While driving and slowing for a traffic light, my 2023 Ram 1500 Limited 4X4 began to immediately slow, and I observed the gear selector engage from drive to park, back to drive and back to park, and engaging the emergency brake. The vehicle ceased operating. I was able to engage the emergency flashers and restart the vehicle. All of this occurred while in traffic. This is the second occurrence. The vehicle has approximately 4000 miles. The first time this occurred I took the vehicle to the dealer. They dealer indicated there was no codes found indicating any trouble of this sort. The first time the vehicle had approximately 1,489 miles (Moss Brothers of San Bernardino, Ca) Invoice #[XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Truck stalls and immediately goes into park and throwing trucks parking brake on. While driving on the road and in traffic.
Turn signal stock fails to shut off turn signal after turning left same problem as recall 23V-799 for 2023 standard 1500
Twice I have pulled out into traffic and the engine lost all power and I was almost rear ended by another vehicle. After a few seconds the engine recovered and was driving normal. I’ve taken it to the dealer where it was purchased twice for this issue but they say they can’t duplicate the issue. No warning lamps ever came up.

Tailgate unlatched and dropped into open position while driving without any action to cause the tailgate to open. Resulting in damage to tailgate from a trailer which was being towed.
I was sitting at a green light yielding to oncoming traffic while waiting to turn left. When I had the ability to safely turn left, I attempted to hit the gas and accelerate. However, the vehicle died shifted into park automatically and set the electronic parking brake I had to restart the truck and manually undo the electronic parking brake before I could move when I contacted the dealer they acted like they have never heard of this issue before.
The truck was purchased brand new and from day one I have complained of a petal hesitation. From a stop if you start very slowly you have normal acceleration. If you are rushed and step down fairly quickly nothing happens so you step down some more and you get a very abrupt jackrabbit starts and will spin the tires. It is bad on dry pavement but becomes a serious safety problem on a slick road. I also know of three 2023 ram trucks that have the same problem that I do. The dealer has not been able to diagnose or fix the problem. They replaced the transmission with less than 10,000 miles on the truck and it did not solve the problem.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated that on three separate occasions, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle downshifted to the first gear inadvertently. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and restarted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the failure could not be replicated. Additionally, the ERS was disengaged. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 14,000.
I brought the 'new to me' truck to the dealership 2 weeks after purchase to address a known recall and a Customer Satisfaction Notification. The latter related to the PCM software to address an issue of staling (08A). No problems were experienced before the service nor were any services noted on the Carfax for stalling before purchase. Four days after the recall and Customer Satisfaction Notice were addressed, I approached a stop sign with intentions to turn right. I slowed, but not to a complete stop, as I could see that no one was approaching from either direction and rolled thru the stop. I took my foot off the gas as I slowed (guessing to 3 mph) and applied the brake to make the turn when the engine stalled and engaged the parking brake and flashers. I was able to restart the vehicle following the dash instructions, however, this could have been a disaster if someone had been coming from my left of an impatient driver was behind me. The issue has not recurred since happening 3 days ago and the vehicle was taken to the dealership today (records of original visit and second visit attached). No warning message or sounds before the incident. Auto start/stop was turned on at the time.
Left turn signal does not disengage. Brights flash randomly.
Truck stalls when slowing to a stop and continuing to drive before fully stopping. The truck shuts down and the emergency brake is activated. It needs to be switched to Park, restarted, emergency released and then switched to park. Being stalled on the road has been dangerous.
It was very cold and the vehicle was moved to the drive from the street and left running by [XXX] in Eagle, CO. It was loaded with ski gear and driven 28 miles to Vail by [XXX] . It was unloaded and driven one mile to a parking lot, parked, and turned off. After skiing the keys were not found so the truck could not be started and five passengers were stranded in Vail. Eventually the keys were found on the kitchen counter in Eagle. The vehicle ran over 25 miles without the key or warning that the key was not in the truck. Had this been a wilderness snowshoe trip without cell coverage, the results could have been deadly. It was a rental vehicle and the products [XXX] and [XXX] drive do not allow driving without the key. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I purchased this vehicle from the dealership on Nov 24, 2023. On Dec 9th, 2023 I found evidence of mice chewing and droppings. I checked the air cabin filter and there was evidence of mouse droppings and chewing as well. I set traps and caught three mice. I took the vehicle to the dealership to identify where they were coming in from and to assess what kind of damage was done to the vehicle, as it was smelling very bad even after changing the air filters. The dealership stated that this was not covered under warranty because it is not a mechanical problem and that I had to go through my insurance and submit a claim before they could proceed with removing the dashboard to investigate damage to the firewall. I received approval from my insurance after submitting a comprehensive claim and the dealership took apart the entire dashboard as well as several other components. They stated that they found evidence of mice droppings, but could not identify where they were coming from, so they put everything back together and returned the vehicle to me. Yesterday (March 6th), I again saw new evidence of chewing near the gas/brake pedals as well as at the air cabin filter. I called Ram to complain about this but they stated that it is not a mechanical issue. However, I believe they need to investigate and fix this problem because it is a structural issue that is permitting mice to enter and damage my vehicle and children's car seats, and the firewall between the engine and cabin could be compromised. More importantly, it is a health hazard with the mouse droppings and urine propagating throughout the ventilation system. Your feedback and support would be greatly appreciated to have Ram resolve this issue with my vehicle. Thank you
Check engine light blinks on and off intermittently, vehicle shakes and feels as if it’s going to stall. From time to time when going to accelerate I pulled out on a main roads and the vehicle lost all power my kids and I flew forward. While idling at a red light, the vehicle started to shake as if it was going to stall and jerked forward and hit the car in front of me. I brought this to the attention of the dealer. I purchased it from and They stated they cannot find any issues. I have pictures and videos of the check engine light coming on in intermittently. I also called when it lost power, pulling into the intersection. This all should be recorded with Jerry Ulm dealer in Tampa.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while attempting to proceed from a RED traffic light, while driving approximately 4 MPH, the automatic parking brake engaged, and the vehicle stalled. The low voltage warning light was illuminated. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact stated that the dealer failed to provide a diagnostic result for the failure. The contact stated that almost a year later the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 13,000.
Stretch belt that run the water pump from the crankshaft failed while driving. Less than 10k miles on the vehicle
When trying to enter an interstate going at a slower speed, the car jumped from drive to park. The vehicle could not be driven. I was able to pull over safely. If it had happened in traffic or at a higher speed, it could have been very dangerous. The engine issue light came on shortly later. The vehicle is at the dealer now. They haven’t been able to reproduce the issue.
This Ram 2023 seems to have slipped from Park to DRIVE. Purchased New Aug 13, 2023 November 3 2023 I placed the vehicle, while on/running, in Park ...........exited the vehicle driver and shut the door, went into the passager compartment (opened the passanger door to remove an item from back area), closed that door, walked around and behind the vehicle ........................... only to return to the vehicle, approximately 6 seconds later, to see the vehicle moving on its own, and ended its travels into a parked Mercedes. No persons in either vehicle during collision. When I got in and placed my foot on brake- I shut down the vehicle and noticed it was in Park. (!).
12 inch head unit ( UConnect 5 System) This is a constant problem with all of the Uconnect 5 systems with various issues. All due to software issues. Sometimes it gets so bad that you can’t even connect with Uconnect service and SOS In case of an emergency.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle sputtered and stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and repaired under Customer Satisfaction Program: 18-08-A1-82 (Powertrain Control Module Software). The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the failure had become a persistent failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
There is a severe throttle delay when pressing the gas pedal in all situations. From a stop to go when you press the throttle there is a severe delay causing a massive safety problem when pulling out / pulling into traffic / merging into a highway or roadway / wven while driving at any speed and you press the pedal there is a huge delay. Its a big safety hazard This is an issue on many ram vehicles from what i am reading on forums and even the dealership has acknowledged the issue but says ram wont resolve it. I am still trying to through ram and the dealership but no luck so far. I believe this is a setup/ programming problem straight from the manufacturer. Please help resolve this before someone gets hurt or killed.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle unintendedly shut off. After restarting the vehicle, the battery warning light was temporarily illuminated, and the vehicle operated normally. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times, but no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of failure, and the contact traded the vehicle. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
The contact owns a 2023 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH, the vehicle independently shifted into park(P) and the steering wheel became stiff. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The mechanic was not able to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to call the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
Turn signal is not cancelling after turning. Brough vehicle back to dealership and they did not have the part to fix it and never called me back. Looked in the NHTSA recall listing and saw that issues with turn signals have been previously reported under 23V799000. What can I do?
There is a loud humming/tumbling sound when decelerating at lower roms. It is very loud, obnoxious, and distracting. It was so loud that I couldn’t hear an emergency vehicle coming up behind me to get over. I have found 100’s of complaints on forums with the same issue with the 5th gen rams. Regional mechanic said it is normal operating for the vehicle, dealership mechanic said this is not normal.
9/28/2023 - As I was slowing the vehicle down at a stop sign, the vehicle suddenly switched from drive to park, and the parking brake was activated. The motor stopped operating and the light indicating the engine was not operating was on. I was able to start the truck without further problem. The truck has a 5.7 e-torque. On 9/11/20213 the truck was left at Moss Brothers Dodge for diagnostic. The truck was there for 3 days. On 9/13/2023 I picked up the truck. The diagnostic evaluation was unable to retrieve codes errors.
FCW did not provide any audible alert, instrument panel alert, nor braking. I was forced to swerve around stopped vehicles that had stopped abruptly for a problem ahead, narrowly missing the stopped vehicles. Speed under 35 mph. Another instance was at freeway speeds vehicles preforming the " swoop and squat" maneuver to enter my traffic lane. Another instance was when a vehicle was parked (disabled?) in the driving lane and The FCW gave no warnings. I have since tried to make the FCW activate but have not been able to get the FCW to function. Have taken vehicle to dealer and they tell me the computer says the system is working and there are no codes. Really, if it isn't working, there would be not codes.
