NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Ram 3500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
0N 4/4/2022 while traveling on interstate 64 E in WV ,towing an R V camper , no warning signals on the dash screen, my truck started losing power and went completely dead, just missed by a tractor trailer rear ending me, as I rolled off to the side of the road. Iwas towed to the nearest Dodge dealership. When I arrived at the dealership a mechanic came and open the hood, he found diesel leaking and a metal rod of the camshaft sitting on top of the engine, which he stated shot through the engine block. Warranty company doesn't want to tear down engine after I gave approval to investigate issue. This is my work truck and source of income. Four weeks later, I am not getting help from dealership that sold me the truck and warranty. Warranty company is trying to use loop hole to get out of paying. I found similar complaints, reported to the NHTSA, engines falling apart while driving down the road. I had to pay for my truck to tow from WV to Charlotte NC to my driveway. I have a case# with the Dodge Customer Care Department and they are just informing me that the truck has recalls, but parts are not avaible at this time.
While towing 5th wheel vehicle check engine light came on I was out of state in arizona vehicl then started to stall I canceled my trip checking all fluids headed back to California as I was nowhere near a dealership made a appointment at ram dealer when I got there light went out I talked with technician he said would have to leave it for 3 weeks before they could look at vehicle needless to say I took it home then in early Feb about 3 weeks after the first incident the check engine light came on again made appointment which was 3 weeks away just to check it in shop and a week before they even looked at the issue they found a cracked hose on inter cooler dealer stated vehicle ok well again on March 4 2022 vehicle again has check engine light on I took to auto store to check code same as before vehicle regeneration frequency it Regenerates ever 100 miles runs poorly uses excessive fuel hesitates when pedal depressed and long cranking time so now I have to be without a vehicle again
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated that she locked the vehicle with the key fob, and the auto start system started the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted and suggested that the manufacturer of the battery be contacted. The manufacturer provided no additional assistance. The failure mileage was 16,000.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving to his residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on three separate occasions to be repaired; however, the repair failed to correct the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000.
DEF reservoir got low and light came on indicating about 300 miles until truck goes into limp mode 5 MPH. Added 1 gallon of DEF and the guage showed to be in the safe zone. The computer system never registered that fluid was added and truck went into limp mode on the way home. When in limp mode you are unable to move vehicle off the roadway in a safe manner or even drive on any roadway without major risk of getting hit. Truck has to be towed to a dealership to have the computer reset. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Ironic that first responder and government vehicles with this same engine ect are omitted from the limp mode function due to safety concerns but not the general public.
The contact owns a 2020 RAM 3500. The contact stated that while driving at 15 MPH, the oil warning light was illuminated, and the vehicle made abnormal sounds. Additionally, there was smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The contact pulled over and refilled the oil reservoir; however, the failure recurred with oil leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with engine damage and connecting rod failure, which punctured the engine block. The engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V511000 (Engine and Engine Cooling, Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 213,000. The oil light did not come on until after the engine had started knocking rapidly. The engine oil also ran out quickly as well. Consumer immediately refilled the oil and drove for 5 minutes and the engine stopped knocking for a few seconds before there was louder knocking, smoke and spewing oil. Consumer had previously reported to the customer care FCA group 2 times last August about metal shavings on the fuel filter. The fuel pump continued to produce metal shavings in the filter every time the filter was change.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal ticking sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with high-pressure fuel pump failure, but the vehicle was not repaired at the time. The contact stated that upon pulling into a parking lot, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had imploded, causing damage to the fuel system. The dealer related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V880000 (Fuel System, Diesel), and the vehicle was repaired; however, the contact later became aware that the dealer had replaced the high-pressure fuel pump with the same part. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic to be serviced, the mechanic informed the contact that the high-pressure fuel pump installed on the vehicle was not the recall part, but the same defective part. The mechanic recorded the high-pressure fuel pump and part number, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was confirmed that the recall part had not been installed on the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The contact stated that the dealer delayed performing the recall repair free of charge, which required the contact to pay for the replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump with the correct part. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer failed to complete the recall repair free of charge. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V880000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted and it was confirmed that the part was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced hard starting and a loss of power while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced; however, the part was not yet available. The failure mileage was 5,900. As I was preparing to travel for the holidays comíng up, I was traveling to Texas to see family. I was driving around 65 mph when suddenly the truck started jerking and slowing down when the gas pedal would not give it power. The car behind slammed the brakes and in order to avoid hitting me had to went the the side of the highway. Before coming to a complete stop the truck a 2020 ram 3500 shut off and will not come off. The tow truck was able to scan the truck and the codes are for low fuel pressure and fuel pump. This was a very scary situation because I’m with all my family and not only did I put them in danger by this truck failing with out a notice of any kind but also put others like the vehicle behind in danger because the truck failed. I have look up and this seems to be a common issue with all the “new ram trucks” not sure why there is no recall yet. Hoping this gets looked at and something can be done for the safety of others
I was on my way home from the local RAM Dealer last night, where I wanted to sell my truck (after inspecting it, they offered me $82K for it), when, spontaneously, my truck started to smoke from under the hood and literally burst into flames! I had to pull over and jump out to avoid being burned alive! I am so traumatized. I'm attempting to tow what's left of this truck to the dealer this morning. I hope FCA will take responsibility for this!

VIN tool confirms parts not available. UPDATE AS OF 6/24/22: Normandin Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, San Jose CA has put owner on a waiting list for parts. Service Director says that the manufacturer will only allow them to order one (1) parts kit for the Y78 / NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V880000 (Fuel System, Diesel) recall once every 7 business days. The dealer says they have a waiting list of approximately 40 customers waiting for repair of this recall. Has told contact that it is expected to be several months before the Y78 recall can be fixed on the contact’s 2020 Ram 3500. Contact finds that this is unacceptable to have such an extreme delay in parts availability for the recall.

I was towing a light trailer (4000 lbs) on I-5 in Oregon on 10/22 when I slowed from ~58 mph to about 45 mph to allow a hasty SUV to merge from the right. When I tried to resume speed the truck seemed "stuck" at 45mph for quite some time. I gave it full throttle and it didn't accelerate. I tapped the brakes, turned off cruise control and it felt like there was no power at all, like it was freewheeling. Finally the motor 'caught' and it accelerated to highway speed. I looked for the problem online and believe this may be related to the CP4 fuel pump issues. Is it safe to continue driving or should I take the truck to a dealer or what? There is no recall yet and I hear the dealership people are telling owners that it is from bad fuel and not covering it! I only have 12128 miles on the truck, please advise!

The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated while hauling his fifth-wheel travel trailer driving up a hill the vehicle lost all power. The contact stated he had to maneuver over several lanes of traffic to move off the road safely. The police department was contacted and had the vehicle towed. The tow truck driver had to unhitch the trailer from the contact's vehicle to tow the truck to a dealer. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with a fuel sensor failure. The fuel sensor was replaced. The vehicle failed to start and was diagnosed with a fuel injection pump failure which had imploded sending metal fragments throughout the whole fuel system and into the fuel tank. The entire fuel system including the fuel tank and all fuel parts needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the dealer informed him of a notice that was sent to the dealer by the manufacturer of a fuel pump failure. The contact stated that he researched the failure online and found NHTSA Action Number: PE21021 (Fuel System, Diesel). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 25,700. Replacement parts are same defective CP 4 injector pump that already failed and now metal shavings are contaminating fuel system leading to another implosion and possible accident or death FCA has no fix available making truck unsafe to operate. STELLANTIS, FCA and STAR are well aware of this CP 4 safety issue in 2019 and 2020 trucks.
At 28,000 miles my vehicle in the middle of the Highway going up a hill stall and suddenly lose boost or was inoperable to safety get out of the road. i was able to do a unsafe maneuvering to get out of the way with the momentum of speed that i have at the moment When this happened a message on my screen said power boost service require, contact your dealer. Later and after the poor customer service in moreno valley ca. And yuma az my local dealer provide., i found out that my fuel pump(cp4) went down, completely destroyed on the inside sending metal particles trough the entire fuel system. 93,000 and again my vehicle went out of service exactly for the same reason(cp4) And now at 135,000 miles my vehicle is down again the reason is idle pulley broke and my serpentine belt got damage at the same time serpentine belt damage my crank sensor and i found out today that is on back order until the 3th week of november I have all documents in order to support the complaints im here to submit today
The component that failed was the CP4 high pressure fuel pump. Currently the truck is at RAM dealer in Champaign IL. If I need the part, I can ask for it. When the fuel pump failed, the engine quit running and I lost power steering and brakes. I was not in a high traffic area at the time and was able to get the truck w/42 foot 5th wheel travel trailer to side of highway safely. The issue with the fuel pump has been confirmed by Hendershot Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM' Has the vehicle component been inspected by manufacturer? UNKNOWN Just prior to the engine shutting off, the following message appeared on the dash, Exhaust Service Required — See Dealer Now— This message indicates regeneration has been disabled due to a system malfunction.
The contact owned a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated that the vehicle would surge whenever he depressed the accelerator pedal while driving. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V880000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The contact notified several unknown dealers of the failure. The dealers informed the contact that though the failure was associated to the recall, they could not assist as the manufacturer had not authorized them to repair the vehicle. The contact then inquired assistance with obtaining the parts for repair and the dealer informed the contact that the manufacturer did not authorize them to sell the parts for repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they would not assist as the vehicle was safe to drive. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact later sold the vehicle to an auction. The failure mileage was approximately 13,300.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle independently went into limp mode and would not accelerate above 20 MPH. Due to the failure, the contact took the vehicle to a dealer where they discovered that a defective fuel pump had caused metal shavings to enter the fuel line, fuel rail, fuel tank, and fuel injectors. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 111,363.
I WAS DRIVING ON I-44 10 PAST MIAMI OKLAHOMA HEADING EAST BOUND AND THE TRUCK LOST ALL POWER THE DODGE 3500 2020 HAD 35,000 MILES ON IT HAD IT TOWED TO THE DODGE DEALER IN MIAMI OK THEY SAID THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP EXPLODED
Good afternoon, As I was traveling down the interstate today my tailgate unexpectedly opened with no action of mine. A passing traveler signaled to me that this happened, and I was very lucky that nothing came out of my bed to strike a vehicle behind me. I was towing a travel trailer and the tailgate sustained damage from striking the trailers jack. Not sure if this is a new issue, but I have seen similar recalls on Rams from years past.
Large air bubble on inner sidewall of tire
CP4 fuel injection pump and entire fuel system. The original part was replaced by the dealership under warranty. I am 400 miles away from that dealership and the truck has broke down with another suspected CP4 failure and will need a full fuel system replacement again. I do not know if it would be available for inspection upon request. It put my safety and my passenger’s safety at risk as it died while moving on a freeway at night. The problem was confirmed at the first dealership, it is currently pending at the current dealership. The part was inspected at the first dealership that did the warranty work. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The incident date below, mileage, and invoice is from the FIRST incident. The second incident occurred on 10/18/2021 at approximately 101,300 miles and is currently waiting to be inspected at a dealership.
We have had the truck a year, it started as pulling to the right, we kept track of tire pressure and there had been no tire pressure differences. The passenger front tire wears unevenly. We have had 2 alignments, we replaced the tires due to severe wear damage and 2 weeks later the tire had significant wear damage again. The front end continues to pull to the right with correct tire pressure and correct alignment.
Truck was with high pressure pump issues, spent $2600 in rental truck, $400 i. Towing truck and about one month with no truck, Chrysler still doesn't want to pay me back, this is my second truck with same issue, previous truck was a 2019 3500 ram having the same problem when truck was with only 4,000 miles on it. Now they repaired my truck but now i feel like my truck lose already torque, is using more diesel and more DEF.
CP4 High Pressure Fuel pump failed @17,500 miles. I was pulling an 18,500 LB 5th wheel trailer on a 2- lane state highway. Stranded family for 6 hours in 106 degree heat until multiple tow trucks arrived to move both vehicles. 85 miles to nearest dealer. Most expenses covered by Good Sam Platinum coverage. Replacement parts and service covered by Cummins. 35 gallons of diesel NOT replaced by FCA, 5 days lodging and towing expenses denied by FCA. No warning lights or messages prior to failure. No prior issues. 3 identical trucks delivered same day to Redding, CA dealer. Crown Motors with same issue. Blame placed on Low Sulfur diesel mandated by State of CA.
The contact owns a 2020 RAM 3500. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, he depressed the START/STOP button several times however, the vehicle failed to start. After waiting for approximately 45 minutes the vehicle started. The contact also stated the vehicle failed to recognize the key fob inside the cabin of the vehicle. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
My wife was driving on a highway with a trailer. Power steering went out. It was near impossible for her to pull over as the vehicle was extremely hard to turn. Not safe!
My truck like all 2019-2020 trucks have the plagued CP4 pump that could fail without showing any symptoms. FCA has failed to step up and have ownership and integrity on this issue. I have asked multiple times to RAM Cares and all I have received is cookie cutter answers from them. I do not know if mine will be next to go or ever will go but FCA has a solution in the 2021 HD Ram trucks and that is the CP-ISB21 fuel pump which looks like the old reliable CP3 fuel pump. Companies out have a solution and that is the CP3 swap but it voids the warranty on the vehicle. The warranty is what is holding me back from having the CP3 pump swap done. Can you please pressure FCA to step up have integrity to replace the plagued CP4 fuel pump with the CP-ISB21 pump. I have challenged FCA on their integrity and ask them if they have it because of the cookie cutter answers I have received from them. I have even asked them to look up what integrity is and to follow the integrity example from the Naval Nuclear Power Program because that program is built on integrity. That program has safely steamed on Nuclear Power for over 60 years. Please again force FCA’s hand on this because this is unsat of them. Look at the forums online and you will see people posting their trucks that have a failed CP4 pump. With that failure FCA is just replacing it another CP4 pump. Also people’s HD rams are down for weeks up to months waiting on the repair. I have also talked to dealership service managers about this issue and they are stumped on why FCA has not issued a recall. Thank you.

The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V398000 (Wheels) and 21V880000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated while at a standstill the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was restarted and functionality returned for several seconds before the failure recurred. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed from the scene and diagnosed with a high-pressure fuel system failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 31,296.
This Laramie trim level truck has an electronic drop tailgate with a button to drop the tailgate on the overhead console and one on the key fob. The tailgate on my truck was closed during my pre-trip and entering the vehicle. I had a trailer hooked to the receiver hitch and drove ten miles before realizing the tailgate was now in the down position and caused significant damage to the tailgate because the tailgate made contact with the trailer. With the electronic release tailgate on this particular year truck there is not a warning message alerting the driver that the tailgate is ajar. There is such an alert on newer models (2021-2022) I went to a local dealership to check. I’m sure the tailgate drop button somehow was pressed on the key fob while in my pocket entering the truck. But I did not receive any alert on the instrument cluster or even hear the tailgate open because the tailgate has a soft open feature. I see this being a serious safety concern to possibly lose cargo and cause a more serious accident.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 RAM 3500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ATTACHED TO A TRAILER. AFTER DRIVING AND ARRIVING AT THE RESIDENCE, THE CONTACT BECAME AWARE THAT THE TAILGATE HAD FALLEN INADVERTENTLY WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE TAILGATE AND THE TRAILER. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AUFFENBERG CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (176 AUTO CT, O'FALLON, IL 62269, (618) 622-4546) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE KEYFOB WAS UNINTENTIONALLY DEPRESSED WHILE IN HIS POCKET, CAUSING THE TAILGATE TO OPEN INADVERTENTLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.
TRUCK CAUGHT FIRE IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I HAD JUST GOTTEN ON THE FREEWAY AND REACHED 70MPH WHEN I COULD SEE SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. PULLED OVER AND IT QUICKLY BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. STATE FARM CLAIM 28-18Q6-12R ELIZABETH ANDERSON, CLAIM SPECIALIST, 844-292-8615X2539126712
WE WERE DRIVING OUR 2020 RAM 3500 DIESEL WITH A 2000-POUND TRUCK CAMPER IN THE BED ON A CITY STREET ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN THROUGH A YIELD SIGN WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED COMPLETELY WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO RESTART IT. THIS RESULTED IN SUDDEN LOSS OF ACCELERATION, POWER STEERING, AND POWER BREAKS, LEADING TO A NEAR COLLISION WITH A LARGE POLE AND POSSIBLY OTHER VEHICLES IN THE IN THE INTERSECTION. ALTHOUGH WE MISSED THE POLE AND OTHER VEHICLES, IT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO AVOID DUE TO LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKING. HAD OUR SPEED BEEN SLIGHTLY HIGHER, A COLLISION WOULD HAVE BEEN UNAVOIDABLE. AFTER HAVING OUR TRUCK INSPECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE ENGINE BREAKDOWN WAS THE BOSCH CP4.2 INJECTION PUMP CATASTROPHICALLY FAILING (OR "GRENADE-ING" OR "IMPLODING" AS THE DEALERSHIP PUT IT) RESULTING IN THE COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM, STOPPING ALL FUEL FLOW TO THE ENGINE. AFTER THIS HAPPENED TO US, WE DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THE BOSCH CP4.2 INJECTION PUMP HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE INCOMPATIBLE WITH DIESEL FUEL FOUND IN THE USA DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICITY, AND HAS OTHER FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN DEFECTS THAT TOGETHER MAKE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE ALMOST INEVITABLE IN VEHICLES DRIVEN IN THE USA. MOST PREVIOUS RAM 3500'S USED A RELIABLE BOSCH CP3 INJECTION PUMP, BUT STARTING IN 2019 MODEL YEARS SWITCHED TO THE LESS EXPENSIVE CP4.2 EVEN THOUGH THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN KNOWN TO RAM AND CUMMINS DUE TO THE COUNTLESS INCIDENTS OF CATASTROPHIC FAILURE IN OTHER VEHICLES USING THE SAME PUMP FOR MANY YEARS. HAD WE KNOWN THIS PRIOR TO PURCHASING OUR TRUCK, WE WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT. WE WERE SURPRISED AND DISAPPOINTED TO FIND OUT THAT VEHICLES USING THIS DANGEROUS INJECTION PUMP HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was restarted and the functionality returned however, the failure recurred after several seconds. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed from the scene. The vehicle was diagnosed with a high-pressure fuel system failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,018.
The contact owns a 2020 RAM 3500. The contact stated while her husband was making a right turn, the vehicle began to stall. The contact stated do not turn off the vehicle until arriving at destination warning message was illuminated. The driver was able to continue driving under 15 MPH until arriving at a local dealer. The local dealer was unable to duplicate or diagnose the cause of the failure. The contact was informed that a specialist was needed to diagnose the vehicle. The contact stated that the dealer called back 2 days later and stated that some unknown cables needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but continued to experience the same failure. The contact stated that the failure had been experienced a third time. The VIN was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V880000 (Fuel System, Diesel) and 21V398000 (Wheels). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.
POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WARNING COMES ON THE DISPLAY ADVISING THAT THE POWER STEERING NEEDS TO BE SERVICED. STEERING WHEEL BECOMES VERY STIFF.
MY 2020 RAM 3500 CUMMINS 6.7 LOST THE INJECTOR PUMP (CP4.2) AND I'M TOLD IT'S ABOUT 15K TO FIX AND WILL TAKE 2 MONTHS TO FIX DUE TO BACK ORDERED PARTS.
I AM ONE OF THE MANY 19-20 HD RAM OWNERS OUT THERE THAT HAVE THE PLAGUED BOSCH CP4 FUEL PUMP. IT IS ESSENTIALLY A TIME BOMB WAITING FOR OFF BECAUSE WHEN IT GOES IT SEND METAL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM MAKING THE VEHICLE INOPERABLE. THAT IS BAD ESPECIALLY THOSE OF US THAT TOW HEAVY. I HAVE ASKED RAM MULTIPLE TIMES ON WHEN THEY PLAN TO HELP US 19-20 OWNERS OUT AND I KEEP GETTING A COOKIE CUTTER ANSWER FROM THEM THAT NOTHING IS IN THE WORKS EVEN THOUGH THE 2021 MODEL HD RAMS HAVE THE RELIABLE CP3 FUEL PUMP AND IT IS A DIRECT SWAP OUT. LUCKILY NOTHING HAS YET HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE BUT I WORRY WHEN I DRIVE TOWING OUR HOME AROUND, FULL TIME LIVING IN AN RV, THAT THE FUEL PUMP WILL GRENADE ITSELF. WHEN THAT FUEL PUMP GOES ABOUT HALF OF THE TIME THE DEALERSHIPS ARE NOT HONORING THE WARRANTY CLAIM BECAUSE THEY BLAME IT ON BAD FUEL BUT HOW CAN WE CONTROL IF THE FUEL WE GET IS BAD OR GOOD, SPECIFICALLY WATER IN FUEL. OWNERS ARE BEING STABBED WITH A 10K TO 20K REPAIR BILL TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. PLEASE FORCE RAM TO ISSUE A RECALL TO REPLACE THE CP4 PUMP WITH THE CP3 PUMP SO THAT WE DO NOT DRIVE AROUND WITH A PLAGUED FUEL PUMP ANYMORE. TELL THEM TO DO THEIR JOB BECAUSE YOU EXPECT ME TO DO MINE. I AM NUCLEAR PROPULSION PLANT OPERATOR/SUPERVISOR FOR 20 PLUS YEARS IN THE NAVY AND WE SCRUTINIZE EVERYTHING TO ENSURE SAFE AND RELIABLE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR PROPULSION PLANTS.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the trailer brakes failed intermittently while the brake pedal was depressed. The turn signals and brake lights also failed to function properly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the rear bumper brake plugs were installed incorrectly causing water to fill the brake plugs. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the brake plugs were installed and functioned as intended. The manufacturer suggested that the vehicle be taken to another dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 7,000.
I BOUGHT MY TRUCK JUST OVER A MONTH AGO AND WAS TOLD I HAD TO ADD LUBRICANT TO MY FUEL IN ORDER TO KEEP MY FUEL PUMP FROM BLOWING UP, AS WELL AS ONLY PUT IN 'GOOD DIESEL.' I KNOW DIESEL CAN CHANGE FROM ONE GAS STATION TO ANOTHER, BUT TO ADD A LUBRICANT IN ORDER TO KEEP MY FUEL PUMP FROM BLOWING UP ON AND BRAND NEW $80000 TRUCK! ALL BECAUSE OF THE CP4 THAT RAM DECIDED TO USE FOR TWO YEARS, THEN WENT BACK TO THE CP3 IN 2021. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE HAVING THEIR PUMPS BLOW UP IN THE FIRST 10000 MILES, BEING LEFT STRANDED FOR MONTHS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO REDO THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AT A PRICE TAG OF $17000. I HAVE HAD SURGING ISSUES THAT ARE MAKING ME NERVOUS TO THE POINT THAT I'M WILLING TO TAKE A $10000 LOSS ON MY TRUCK AND TRADE IT IN FOR A DIFFERENT ONE. I DON'T WANT TO BE LEFT STRANDED ON THE WAY TO WORK ONE DAY BECAUSE FCA DOESN'T WANT TO RECOGNIZE THEY PUT IN A DEFECTIVE PART THAT IS CAUSE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND LEAVING US CONSUMER OUT OF A VEHICLE FOR MONTHS. THIS HAS TO CHANGE!
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED A ROD CAME THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK. I WAS FORTUNATE I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY BEFORE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. I WAS TOWING A TRAILER. THE ENGINE GAVE NO INDICATION ANYTHING WAS WRONG. THE ONLY NOTABLE THING WAS THE LOST OF FUEL MILEAGE THAT BEGIN TO DECREASE EARLIER IN THE DAY. THE RAM ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT IS HOLDING UP THE DEALER FROM REPAIRING THE ENGINE. THEY ALSO HAVE ANOTHER THERE WITH A SIMILAR ISSUE. THEY CAN'T PROVIDE A TIMEFRAME ON WHEN THE REPAIR WILL BE DONE. NO RENTAL OR LOANER VEHICLE IS GIVEN. THIS IS MY WORK TRUCK AND NO INCOME WHILE THE TRUCK IS DOWN.
THE 2019 TO 2020 MODEL YEAR RAM 2500 HEAVY DUTY EQUIPPED WITH A 6.7L CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINE HAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE A STALL AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. THE BOSCH CP4.2 FUEL INJECTION PUMP HAS A VERY HIGH RATE OF SUDDEN FAILURE LEADING TO IMMEDIATE STOPPAGE ON THE ENGINE AND ENGINE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE PUMP DESTROYS ITSELF AND TAKES OUT THE REST OF THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM LEADING TO REPAIRS IN THE $20,000 USD RANGE. FCA & RAM HAVE ATTEMPTED TO REVISE THE PUMP IN LATE (JULY) 2020 TO SOLVE THE ISSUE BUT THE FAILURES KEEP OCCURRING. FOR THE 2021 MODEL YEAR, FCA & RAM HAVE CHANGED THE PUMP ENTIRELY AND REVERTED BACK TO USING AN OLDER, SAFER, MORE RELIABLE DESIGN. NO PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS OF NEITHER THE PUMP REVISION IN 2020, NOR THE PUMP CHANGE IN 2021 HAVE BEEN MADE. THE ISSUE IS SO PREVALENT THAT THE REPLACEMENT PUMPS AND REPAIRS GENERALLY HAVE A 30-90 DAY WAIT PERIOD WHERE THE CUSTOMER IS WITHOUT THE PRIMARY VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM IS A SUBSTANTIATED SAFETY RISK. ACCORDING TO A TEXAS JUDGE IN A BOSCH CP4.2 LAWSUIT, WHEN ANOTHER AUTOMAKER, GM TRIED TO DISMISS THE CASE SAYING THE PUMP FAILURE IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, THE COURT RESPONDED: "THE WORST CASE SCENARIO OF A TRUCK SPONTANEOUSLY STALLING AT HIGH SPEEDS IS NOT A MERE INCONVENIENCE. NOR IS IT A MERE INCONVENIENCE TO SPEND BETWEEN $8,000 TO $20,000 ON REPAIRS TO MAKE THE TRUCKS FIT FOR THEIR ORDINARY PURPOSE. THE COURT REJECTS GM'S SUGGESTION THAT THE RISK OF SPONTANEOUS ENGINE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING IS NOT, AS A MATTER OF LAW, UNREASONABLY DANGEROUS, DEPRIVING THE VEHICLES OF FITNESS FOR THEIR PURPOSE OF TRANSPORTATION.". TOYOTA AGREES: "IF A VEHICLE STALL OCCURS WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS, THIS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH". FCA & RAM HAVE REMEDIED THE SITUATION FOR THE 2021 MODEL YEAR HOWEVER, THE 2019 AND 2020 OWNERS ARE STILL AT RISK. THE NHTSA NEEDS TO FORCE FCA TO RECALL THESE TRUCKS.
WHILE DESCENDING A MOUNTAIN PASS, TRAVELLING AT 75 MPH, PULLING A 20' ENCLOSED CAR TRAILER, MESSAGE IN CLUSTER SAID "POWER STEERING UNAVAILABLE" AND THE POWER STEERING WAS GONE. PULLED OVER, CHECKED FOR LEAKS, BLOWN FUSE, AND BELT CONDITION AND FOUND NO ISSUES. RESTARTED VEHICLE AND IT FUNCTIONED FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS AND QUIT AND DISPLAYED THE MESSAGE AGAIN. VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 3,200 MILES ON IT. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP ON 12/18/2020, HAVE MADE NUMEROUS CALLS TO RAM CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND THE BEST INFORMATION THEY CAN GIVE ME IS THAT THE PART WILL BE AVAILABLE ON 1/18/2021. I AM ON VACATION 2,000 MILES FROM HOME AND STRANDED.
