This page combines three types of NHTSA data: recall campaigns (official manufacturer or government actions), owner complaints (unverified consumer reports), and crash test ratings (where available). A vehicle with many complaints is not necessarily less reliable — complaint volume correlates with sales volume and vehicle age. Recalls indicate identified defects, not overall quality. To compare this model year with others, use the year navigation in the sidebar or return to the model overview page.

These vehicles are equipped with air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, used as original equipment or replacement equipment (such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags), that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
Remedy Status
Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, or replace the air bag assembly. The recall began February 15, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Over time, the brake hoses in these kits may fatigue and fail.
Remedy Status
Toyota will notify all known owners of the Scion xB and Scion tC vehicles upon which an involved optional TRD Brake Kit could have been installed. If the vehicle is equipped with one of the TRD brake kits, it will be replaced with a standard equipment brake kit, free of charge. The recall began November 16, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0U.

The car is giving problems in the engine, it's consuming way too mucho oil. I found out that there was a recall this Monday oct 18, 2021, and they told me that I can not participate because my car exceeds the miles limit by 6k miles, which I know, but if I knew that, I would've taken the car to a Toyota Dealer earlier. Is it possible to have it repair by some empathy and understanding of not receiving anything on mail or alert whatsoever. Please I beg for help, it's my only vehicle, the one I go to work to. I will loose my job if this don't get fixed because I can't afford to pay an engine repair on my own at this moment! Thank you for understanding!
THE BRAKES FAILED
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 SCION XB. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S INSURANCE COMPANY TO DETERMINE THE CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
LAST NIGHT WE WENT OUT. THE CAR WAS PARKED AT AN EVENT FOR A COUPLE HOURS, THEN WE WERE HEADED FOR DINNER WHEN THE DASHBOARD LIT UP, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER. FORTUNATELY WE WERE ON A LOW TRAVELED CITY STREET AND WERE ABLE TO PULL OFF FOR SAFETY. IF WE HAD BEEN ON THE FREEWAY, I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT, IN THE DARK, ON A SATURDAY NIGHT, THIS INCIDENT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN INJURY OR WORSE. THE PICTURES OF THE WIRING ARE ATTACHED. SOMETHING HAD EATEN THEM - THESE WIRES, DUE TO ANOTHER INCIDENT, HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED AS BEING THE EDIBLE ONES THAT ARE CAUSING SO MANY PROBLEMS IN MANY CARS. THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN REGULARLY, INCLUDING DURING THE DAY OF THE LATEST INCIDENT, WITHOUT PROBLEMS. IT APPEARS, BASED ON THE TOTAL SEPARATION OF THE WIRES FROM THE ALTERNATOR THAT SOMETHING GOT IN WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED AT THE EVENT. ALSO, WE WERE ONLY A COUPLE MILES AWAY WHEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. LAST TIME, SOMETHING ATE THE AC WIRES, SO THERE WERE NO SAFETY ISSUES. THIS TIME, THE CAR BECAME SUDDENLY UNSAFE WHILE DRIVING. AT THIS POINT, I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE IT UNLESS I DO A THOROUGH INSPECTION OF THE WIRING SYSTEM BEFORE EVERY USE, WHETHER I AM LEAVING HOME OR RESTARTING THE CAR WHILE ON AN ERRAND. AS I AM NOT A LICENSED MECHANIC, I MAY MISS SOMETHING. I UNDERSTAND THAT THESE "GREEN WIRES" ARE THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE, BUT IF THEY ATTRACT RODENTS WHO WILL CHEW THEM, POSSIBLY SUDDENLY LOSE POWER AT SPEED, ON A FREEWAY, I CAN'T SEE HOW THIS CAN BE A GOOD THING. WHATEVER ATE THE WIRES LAST NIGHT DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF SEVERING THEM. NEXT TIME, WHAT IF THEY ARE ONLY PARTIALLY CHEWED AND THE CONNECTION DOESN'T BREAK UNTIL I'M ON THE FREEWAY? WE HAVE HAD MANY OTHER VEHICLES AND NEVER HAD RODENT PROBLEMS. THIS IS ROUND 2 WITH THE SCION IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS.
TWICE MY CAR UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED. THE FIRST TIME, MY CAR WAS IN REVERSE, AND MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. THE SECOND TIME, I WAS IN DRIVE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. NEITHER TIME DID MY CAR MOVE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. BECAUSE I NO LONGER FELT SAFE, I SOLD THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 2,200 MILES ON IT. THE CAR COST ABOUT $18,000. THE DEALER BOUGHT IT BACK FOR $12,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON A LIMITED ACCESS HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE PASSENGER BUMPED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CONTROL WITH HIS LEG, MOVING THE VEHICLE FROM AUTOMATIC MODE INTO MANUAL MODE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR, AND CAUSING A CORRESPONDING ABRUPT SLOWDOWN OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ACTUATION OF THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO WARN FOLLOWING VEHICLE OF THE SLOWDOWN. A FOLLOWING VEHICLE HAD TO BRAKE HARD TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH MY SCION XB, WHILE I CORRECTED THE SITUATION BY SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL BACK INTO AUTOMATIC MODE. I BELIEVE THERE IS AN INSUFFICIENT DETENTE MECHANISM TO RETAIN THE VEHICLE IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MODE, AND THAT ACCIDENTAL SHIFTS INTO MANUAL MODE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ARE NOT ADEQUATELY PREVENTED. AN UNINTENDED DOWNSHIFT CAUSED BY A PASSENGER COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT CAUSING GREAT INJURY IF IT WERE TO OCCUR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE COULD ALSO BE DAMAGED BY THESE UNINTENDED/UNCOMMANDED DOWNSHIFTS, CAUSING A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE VEHICLE DURING SUBSEQUENT EXCURSIONS.
