This complaint is about other cars affecting me while I’m driving at night. Around 50% of oncoming traffic is using dangerously bright headlights. It is so bright that it’s physically painful to my eyes and leaves a blind spot in my field of vision that lasts for several minutes after each encounter. The head lights are so bright that when highbeams are switched off manually, there is barely a difference. They are so bright when they are NOT on high beams that the turn signals are very difficult or literally impossible to see. Some amount of vehicles are using automatic highbeams that do not adapt properly. They are sometimes on full high beam brightness during daylight hours (and are just as painful to look at in daylight). They do not register my vehicle’s headlights or approaching traffic so instead of automatically dimming, I am being blinded by full high beams. Sometimes flashing my highbeams will trigger them to dim, but their vehicle has to be pretty close to mine for it to work. Their automatic highbeams do not dim when they are behind my car, causing my rear view and side mirrors to be completely unusable. Flipping the rear view mirror does not help. While sitting at a stoplight at an intersection, vehicles opposite to mine often maintain their highbeams and are too far from mine for flashing my highbeams at them to do anything. Some of the bright headlights (not on high beams) I believe are LED retrofit and this is probably why turn signals are barely or not at all visible with some vehicles. Some of these suspected LED retrofits are as bright as the ones on a fire truck or ambulance. I saw them side by side tonight, prompting me to finally write this complaint. This problem needs to be regulated for the safety of everyone, especially night drivers and cars that sit lower to the ground than SUV/trucks. My windshield and my eye level is at the same height as an SUV’s headlights. Maybe a lumens test as part of the yearly inspection would help.
The rear axel beam on the vehicle cracked on the drivers side. It separated at a weld and caused the entire wheel assemble to lean inward (extreme negative camber) and rub against the wheel well. Fortunately I was off the highway when the incident occurred and barely made it safely to my work place. If this had happened at a greater speed I fear for what may have happened to myself and others. It is UNKNOWN if this problem has been reproduced in other circumstances. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer or police. It was inspected by an independent service provider (mechanic). It is available for additional inspection if needed. There was no warning, message or any other symptoms prior to the issue occurring.
MY WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH ARE COMING ON AND CAUSING THE CAR TO LOCK UP, JERK, AND STALL WHILE IN MOTION IN SLOWER SPEEDS USUALLY WHEN AT A STREET SIGN AND GOING INTO A TURN, A STOP LIGHT ALSO GOING INTO A TURN ON MAIN HWYS AND WORSE OF ALL IN NEIGHBORHOODS PRIOR TO MY GETTING TO THE HOSPITAL. I'M NOT IN GOOD HEALTH AND GO FOR TESTING AND TREATMENT REGULARLY. PLEZ HELP I KNOW Y'ALL ARE AWARE OF THIS THING BUT IT'S NOT A RECALL YET. PLEZ FIX MY CAR. I'M ON DISABILITY DUE TO CANCER.
NOTICED RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS LEANING INWARD. FOUND THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY CRACKED. WE THEN HAD IT WELDED AND CHECKED THE OTHER SIDE. NOTHING WAS VISIBLE, BUT WAS INFORMED THAT ASSEMBLY COULD BE RUSTING FROM INSIDE OUT. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, WHILE TRAVELING THE HIGHWAY, CAR STARTED MAKING NOISE AND HAD A HOT TIRE SMELL. PULLED OVER AND LEFT REAR TIRE HAD LEANED IN AND CUT THE TIRE ALL THE WAY AROUND. LEFT SIDE HAD ALSO CRACKED. WE FEEL TOYOTA SHOULD REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR OF OUR CAR.
TAKARA RECALL LETTER RECEIVED AMONG OTHER 2. AFTER CHECKING ON AIRBAGRECALL.COM AND VERIFYING THAT MY CAR DEFINETALY HAVE A RECALL, I CALLED DEALER, AFTER BEING TRANSFERRED TO 5 DIFFERENT REPS, I WAS TOLD THAT ONLY ONE RECALL WAS FOUND ONLY FOR MASTER SWITCH. PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP AS I AM VERY CONCERN FOR MY FAMILY SAFETY. MY DRIVER SEAT MOVES BACK AND FORT WHILE IN MOTION AS WELL.
TAKATA RECALL - TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ARE REFUSING TO REPLACE AIRBAGS. THEY ARE STATING THAT LETTER I RECEIVED FROM TK HOLDINGS INC. AND THE WEB-SITE THEY REFERRED ME TO (WWW.AIRBAGRECALL.COM) ARE FRAUDS. THEIR STATEMENTS SUGGEST THAT EVERYONE IS "GETTING ON THE BANDWAGON" TO DEFRAUD CONSUMERS. THEY STATED THAT SINCE THE TOYOTA WEB-SITE IS NOT INDICATING MY CAR'S AIRBAG IS DANGEROUS THEY ARE NOT GOING TO REPLACE IT. I AM OUTRAGED!!!

THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER (STEVE LANDERS TOYOTA, 10825 COLONEL GLENN RD, LITTLE ROCK, AR) WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
I WAS TURNING ON A LEFT ON A MAJOR STREET TO SMALL STREET. ALLL CARS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION WAS STOPPED DUE TO A STREET LIGHT A BLOCK AWAY. IT WAS A 2 LANE STREET ALONG WITH STREET CURB PARKING. BOTH CARS ON EACH LANE HAD STOPPED FOR ME N AS I WAS TURNING LEFT ANOTHER CAR APPEARED SUDDENLY AND AS I PRESSED THE BREAK IT DIDN'T WORK RIGHT CAUSING ME HIT THE CAR
RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE APRIL 2017. CALLED LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR APPT. WAS TOLD 3-5 DAY TIMEFRAME FOR PARTS. NO RESPONSE SO CALLED AGAIN JUNE 2017. WAS TOLD PARTS WOULD BE IN ON THE 23RD. JULY 2017 WITH NO RESPONSE WENT TO NEXT LEVEL & CALLED SCION CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER. PERSON I VOICED MY CONCERNS TO PUT ME ON HOLD & CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER WHO TOLD HER SOME PARTS CAME IN & SOME DID NOT. WILL CALL ME WHEN THEY DO. CASE # GIVE TO ME FOR REFERENCE BY SCION CENTER IS 1707180347. THERE ARE 3 RECALLS. AUGUST 2017 STILL NO UPDATE & TOOK IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL BY WRITING TO NHTSA IN WASHINGTON, DC. DUE TO MY CONCERNS FOR THE SAFETY OF MY DAUGHTER WHO UTILIZES THIS VEHICLE & ONE OF THE RECALLS REFERS TO BRAKES. IT IS NOW SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 & NO RESPONSE TO ANY OF MY INQUIRIES & STILL NO WORD ON MY REPAIRS BEING MADE. I HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL MEANS TO GET THESE PROBLEMS RECTIFIED. THE RECALL NOTICE SPECIFICALLY STATES TO HAVE THE REMEDY PERFORMED ASAP! IT IS NOW 5 MONTHS SINCE MY FIRST ATTEMPT TO REMEDY THIS & STILL NO REPAIRS. WHAT IS MY NEXT OPTION TO GET THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED & PROTECT THE WELL BEING OF MY FAMILY?
SLOW LEAK OF AIR PRESSURE. I HAD TO KEEP ADDING AIR. LOCAL BRIDGESTONE TIRE PEOPLE SAID IT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. THEY TOOK IT OFF RIM AND THE BEAD WAS TORN.
THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG SHOWS THAT THE AIRBAG & SEAT BELTS WAS DEPLOYED (WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT ). THE MANUFACTURING AND DEALER DECLINES COVERAGE FOR THIS DEFECT. THE COST TO FIX THIS ISSUE IS ON THE VEHICLE OWNERS BURDEN AND I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS FAIR IF IT A DEFECT FROM THE MANUFACTURING. THE SENSOR LIGHTS SHOWING THE AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED SHALL BE AT MANUFACTURERS COST NOT CONSUMER. THE SENSOR LIGHTS ARE ON AT ALL TIMES,STATIONARY, IN MOTION , EXCEPT . I WHEN THE CAR IS TURN OFF. I DECLINE THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE OF $150.00 JUST TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG PLUS ADDITIONAL CHARGE IF ANY TO FIX IT.
THIS IS THE FOURTH INCIDENT, AND THE FOURTH TIME I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER WHO CANNOT FIND OR DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. I HIT THE BRAKES, AND INSTEAD OF SLOWING OR STOPPING THE CAR, THE CAR ACCELERATES. ONE TIME, IT DAMAGED A TIRE, THIS TIME IT HAPPENED WHILE MERGING ON A HIGHWAY AND NEARLY CAUSED A DANGEROUS COLLISION. THIS LAST INCIDENT, I WAS TRAVELING AROUND 30 MPH. THE TWO TIMES BEFORE, I HAD BEEN ATTEMPTING TO COME TO A STOP FROM 25-30 MPH, AND THE FIRST TIME I HAD BEEN TRAVELING BETWEEN 30-35 MPH WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO BREAK TO AVOID ANOTHER VEHICLE SWITCHING LANES. TOYOTA DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TWO YEARS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS REMEDIED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN 12V491000 (VISIBILITY). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 135,000.
TAKATA RECALL, DUE TO THE AGE OF VEHICLE AND BEING IN A HUMID CLIMATE, THE AIRBAGS ON PASSENGER SIDE HAS BECOME HAZARDOUS. DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY MAY OCCUR TO PASSENGER IF AIRBAG INFLATES.
RIGHT FRONT CLUNK NOISE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS. WHEEL REMOVE AND SUSPENSION INSPECTED. INSPECTION REVEALED LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHING AND BOLT FAILURE.
I HAD AN ACCIDENT IN JUNE 2016. AIRBAG FAILED. THE BRAKE HAS BEEN GIVING ME PROBLEMS. IT WOULD RANDOMLY WORK AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T WHERE THE CAR JUST SKIDS WITH THE PEDAL ON THE FLOOR.
THE SUSPENSION JUST SUDDENLY DIED ON MY CAR. KNOWING A BIT ABOUT CARS I WOULD SAY MY AXEL BOOTS HAVE GI C EN OUT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XD. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE BEARING TO THE WATER PUMP FRACTURED AND CAUSED THE DRIVE BELT TO FRACTURE. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP BEARING FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000.
PURCHASED CAR USED FROM DEALERSHIP IN MARCH 2013 WITH 38,900 MILES. WATER PUMP REPLACED AT 43,739. JANUARY 2015 ENGINE REPLACED BY DEALER DUE TO OIL LOSS AT 55,285 MILES. INSTALLED FRONT BRAKES LATE JUNE 2015 AT 58,652. MID JULY 2015 EXPERIENCE CLUNKING SOUNDS COMING FROM DRIVER'S SIDE UPON ACCELERATION. CLUTCH FEELS "LOOSE." INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INSTALLS BOLT AND NUT ON MOTOR MOUNT. PROBLEM CONTINUED OVER WEEKEND. MECHANIC SAID DRIVER'S SIDE CONTROL ARM IS LOOSE AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT. TOOK CAR TO DEALER WHO SAYS NEW MOTOR MOUNT IS BEING ORDERED, DESPITE NEWNESS OF ENGINE AND NO EVIDENCE OF CRACKING. THEY DENY CONTROL ARM NEEDS REPLACEMENT. VEHICLE FEELS UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN CITY OR FREEWAY.
I WAS DRIVING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CHECK ENGINE WOULD COME ON AND THE VEHICLE WOULD START SHAKING AND SLOW DOWN FOR MAYBE A COUPLE OF SECONDS THEN IT WOULD DRIVE NORMAL, SOMETIMES EITHER THE SAME DAY OR IN A COUPLE OF DAYS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD SHUT OFF AND VEHICLE WOULD DRIVE NORMAL AGAIN, THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 4/5 TIMES, I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, BUT WHEN I DID THE CHECK ENGINE WAS OFF AND HE FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, (NOT REALLY SURE IF HE EVEN DID A DIAGNOSTIC ON IT) HE STATED MAYBE IT WAS JUST A TEMPORARY GLICHE. THIS SUNDAY 9/6/2015, I WAS DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHAKE BUT THIS TIME IT FELT IT WAS ABOUT TO STOP, THIS IS HAPPENING WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT WAS SCARY BECUASE A PERSON DRIVING BEHIND ME AT 40MPH DOES NOT KNOW THAT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF THEM MIGHT COME TO A FULL STOP AND THEY MAY CRASH INTO ME.. VERY SCARY.. LUCKILY THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF TRAFFICE BUT STILL IT WAS VERY SCARY. THIS TIME IT TOOK LONGER TO GET BACK TO A NORMAL SPEED I HAD TO CIRCLE AROUND, STOP THE CAR, HIT THE GAS A LITTLE TO SEE IF THAT WOULD HELP AND IT DID BUT I WAS ONLY 5 MINUTES AWAY FROM MY HOME. THIS IS VERY SCARY ESPECIALLY IF YOUR DRIVING IN A FREEWAY OR IN A BUSY STREET. I WANT TO KNOW IS THIS A TOYOTA SCION PROBLEM AND IS THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER SCION XD 2008 DRIVERS AND WHAT'S CAUSING THIS?
I HAD BEEN HEARING CLUNKING NOISE FROM RIGHT FRONT WHEEL FOR A FEW WEEKS, THAT SEEMED TO BE GETTING LOUDER OVER TIME. MOST PROMINENT DURING BRAKING OR HITTING POTHOLES. FATHER LOOKED AT WHEEL WHILE I BACKED OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND NOTICED WHEEL SHIFTING FORWARD/BACKWARD WITHIN THE WHEEL WELL ABOUT AN INCH WHEN STARTING AND STOPPING. TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL TIRE SHOP AND WAS TOLD BOLD ATTACHING LOWER CONTROL ARM TO BODY HAD CORRODED AND BROKEN OFF. SUGGESTED I TAKE CAR TO DEALER FOR REPAIR, AND MENTIONED THERE WAS A TSB ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM THAT EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 7 YEARS/100,000 MILES. DEALER REPAIRED VEHICLE AT MY COST ($422), SINCE THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED (MILEAGE). I BELIEVE THIS PART SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY MY FATHER NOTICED THE WHEEL MOVEMENT OR THE WHEEL MAY HAVE COME OFF AT HIGHWAY SPEED. *JS

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY COME AND STAY ON. MANUAL TRANSMISSION XD. ABS/BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON BOTH AT HIGHWAY AND CITY SPEEDS, STAY ON FOR HOURS, THEN GO OFF, THEN COME BACK ON FOR A FEW DAYS, THEN GO BACK OFF. SOMETIMES THE ABS/BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON WHEN I START THE CAR, THEN EVENTUALLY GO OFF, SOMETIMES THEY COME ON WHILE DRIVING AND GO OFF THE NEXT DAY OR SO. TEMPERATURES ARE COOL AND WET (40 DEGREE F) OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS. ABS DOES NOT ENGAGE WHILE DRIVING, BUT DOES NOT ENGAGE PROPERLY WHILE ABS/BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON AND DURING BRAKING. WHEN ABS/BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OFF, ALL BRAKING IS NORMAL. BRAKES AND ASSEMBLIES ARE NOT WORN OUT, BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IS SPOT ON. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 SCION XD WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION HOME FROM ERRAND RUN, CLOSE TO HOME. NEAR A BUSY INTERSECTION, THE GEARS FAILED. NO WARNING, NO ENGINE LIGHT. A KIND GENTLEMAN HELPED ME PUSH THE CAR INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT. DURING THE AUTOPSY, MY MOST EXCELLENT MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE THROW-OUT BEARING IN THE CLUTCH BROKE. THE CAR HAS ONLY 24,300+ MILES. THE PART'S FAILURE WAS NOT CAUSED BY IMPROPER USE OR EXCESSIVE WEAR! THIS WAS A FAULTY PART. I CAN ONLY THANK A HIGHER POWER THAT I WAS NOT ON A HIGHWAY OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN THIS HAPPENED, BECAUSE THERE WAS FULL LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE STEERING SYSTEM & MOBILITY. GUESS IT WASN'T MY DAY TO DIE IN A HORRIBLE CAR CRASH. CALLED TOYOTA TO ASK FOR REMUNERATION FOR THE $1,350 REPAIR JOB AND THE $140 FOR THE RENTAL CAR BECAUSE THE REPAIR TOOK A WEEK. THE PART IS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY, BUT TOYOTA REFUSED TO PAY FOR ANYTHING BECAUSE THE REPAIRS WERE NOT PERFORMED AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP! APPARENTLY TOYOTA PUTS THE "T" IN STUPID - AND HOW MANY CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS ARE THEY FIELDING THIS WEEK? LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS, I CONTACTED STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE HELP LINE. HOPEFULLY THE AG'S CASE WORKER WILL BE A BETTER RESOLUTION THAN "NO, WE WON'T PAY FOR THE FAULTY PART THAT IS UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE ONLY PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL TOYOTA DECODER RINGS ARE ALLOWED TO FIX IT." RIDICULOUS. ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL AND IN THE DARKNESS BIND THEM! *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE SEAT WAS ADJUSTED FAR BACK BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS NO FAILURE PRIOR TO THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,644.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH FAILED, LOCKING UP THE VEHICLE AT A DANGEROUS INTERSECTION. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS BEGINNING TO FAIL. UPON REPAIR, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ONE OF THE METAL COMPONENTS WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION BROKE AND CAUSED THE IRREPAIRABLE DAMANGE TO THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. *JS
AS I WAS DRIVING, MY ABS, BRAKE LIGHT, VSC LIGHTS ALL CAME ON . THEY FLASH CONSTANTLY. I HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO REPLACE MY ABS SENSORS BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE. NOW AGAIN THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND I'M TOLD THAT THE WIRE HARNESS HAS TO BE REPLACE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
WHENEVER I USE THE BRAKES IN MY CAR, THEY LOCK UP. THERE'S BEEN MANY TIMES WHEN I'M APPROACHING A STOP SIGN/LIGHT AND I GET EXTREMELY CLOSE TO HITTING A CAR BECAUSE MY CAR IS ACTING UP, ITS BEEN DOING THIS FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF. I DECLINED. A MONTH AFTER MY VISIT, EVERY TIME I USE MY BRAKES, IT MAKES A WEIRD CLICKING NOISE, PEOPLE SAY IT'S MY ANTI LOCKS KICKING. NO CLUE WHY SOMETHING SO SERIOUS ISN'T UNDER RECALL. *TR
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON IN CAR, ALONG WITH CODE C0210. DIAGNOSIS INDICATES THAT BRAKES ARE FUNCTIONAL, BUT ABS IS NOT FUNCTIONAL. HAVE ALREADY HAD HUBS WITH SENSORS REPLACED ONCE AND, WHEN THE PROBLEM RECURRED, HAD THE HARNESS FOR THE RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR REPLACED. BASED UPON INTERNET SEARCHES AND SEARCHES OF THE COMPLAINTS DATABASE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AND YEAR OF THE SCION XD. SINCE ABS FUNCTIONALITY IS COMPROMISED, THIS REPRESENTS A SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
AFTER CAR WAS SITTING OUTSIDE AFTER SNOWSTORM, CAR WAS STARTED AND AS I PULLED OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT, SEVERAL LIGHTS (BRAKE, TSC, ABS) APPEARED ON DASHBOARD. ONCE I BEGAN DRIVING ON THE SLIPPERY ROAD SURFACE, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES NO LONGER FUNCTIONED AS THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY, LEADING TO INCREASED SLIDING. THIS SEEMS LIKE A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE. THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AFTER DRIVING FOR SEVERAL MILES, BUT RE-APPEARED SPORADICALLY OVER THE REST OF THE WINTER. *TR
THE ABS WARNING LIGHT AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING MY 2008 SCION XD, THE ABS STOPPED WORKING. EMERGENCY BRAKE AND BRAKES SEEM TO BE WORKING NORMALLY . MY LOCAL TOYOTA/SCION DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS TWO FAULTY REAR WHEEL SENSORS, INCLUDING ONE THAT WAS REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO (JAN. 2011) FOR THE SAME REASON. ALL FAILURES OCCURRED DURING BELOW FREEZING/ HEAVY SNOW CONDITIONS - EXACTLY THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH ONE WOULD NEED ABS. PROPOSED REPAIR INCLUDES REPLACING THE WIRE HARNESS/SENSOR, BUT NO MEASURES TO PROTECT THE NEW PARTS FROM FREEZING OR CORROSIVE ROAD DEBRIS. REPAIR ESTIMATE IS APPROXIMATELY $1,200. MANY OTHER SCION XD OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS IDENTICAL PROBLEM. SOME SCION OWNERS CANNOT AFFORD THIS REPAIR AND WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE THEIR VEHICLES WITH INACTIVE ABS SYSTEMS, AS I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT I COULD DO TO SAVE MONEY. IT APPEARS THAT TOYOTA IS NOT ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM WITH A REPAIR BULLETIN OR REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR PARTS THAT WERE NOT DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND THE VERY WEATHER CONDITIONS IN WHICH THEY ARE NEEDED MOST, OR ISSUING A RECALL TO HELP COVER THE COST TO REMEDY THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DEFECT WHEN THE PARTS FAIL. VERY DISAPPOINTING FOR WHAT HAS OTHERWISE BEEN AN EXCELLENT VALUE AND RELIABLE VEHICLE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING TO A JOB INTERVIEW. INITIALLY THERE WAS A SLIGHT GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR. THIS SOUND WOULD OCCUR ONLY WHEN THE ACCELERATION PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. WHILE STILL ON THE FREEWAY, THE GRINDING SOUND PROGRESSED AND THERE WAS INCREASED RESISTANCE (WITH PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND MAKE A TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE). WHILE STILL ON THE FREEWAY, AND IN 5TH GEAR, THE TRANSMISSION GAVE OUT, AND BEING IN 5TH GEAR WAS AS IF BEING IN NEUTRAL (NO ACCELERATION AT ALL, ENGINE WOULD REV WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL). I WAS LUCKY THAT I DID NOT GET IN A CRASH AT 70 MILES PER HOUR. AFTER PULLING OVER, I TRIED THE REMAINING GEARS AND THEY MADE THE SAME TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER. AFTER INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD THAT THE BEARINGS AND GEARS CAME APART WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION, AND THAT IT WAS DUE TO AN INTRINSIC DEFECT OF THE TRANSMISSION. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE CAR AND HAVE MAINTAINED THE CAR RELIGIOUSLY. IT HIS HIGHLY UNUSUAL TO HAVE A 2008 SCION XD MANUAL 5-SPEED TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY FAIL AT 86,000 MILES. I HAVE NOT ABUSED THE CAR AND IT WAS IN GREAT CONDITION. I HAD TO PAY $4,000 DOLLARS FOR THE DEALER TO INSTALL A NEW TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH. I FEEL THAT I GOT RIPPED OFF BUYING THIS CAR AS THERE IS NO WARRANTY THAT WOULD COVER THIS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE AND HIGHLY DANGEROUS FAULTY TRANSMISSION. I THINK IT WOULD BE PRUDENT TO HAVE THIS TRANSMISSION RECALLED, AND CEASED FROM PRODUCTION AS SERIOUS BODILY HARM AND DEATH COULD HAVE RESULTED TO MYSELF AND OTHERS FROM THIS TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON ANY ORDINARY DAY MY CAR BEGAN MAKING LOUD NOISES IN THE FRONT AND MADE THE CAR FEEL AS THOUGH IT'S JERKING WHEN I BRAKE. AFTER LOOKING FOR THE PART ONLINE MY SEARCH RESULTS WERE MAINLY OTHER SCION OWNERS WHO WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING UNFORTUNATELY. *TR
THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM ON 2007-PRESENT TOYOTA YARIS AND 2008-PRESENT SCION XD HAVE A DESIGN FLAW. THE #2 BOLT RUSTS BADLY ON SOME VEHICLE STARTING FROM AS EARLY AS 20000 MILES, AND SOME EVEN SNAPS OFF AND CAUSES THE CAR TO LOSE CONTROL WHILE DRIVING. TOYOTA HAVE ISSUED A TSB TO REPLACE THE WHOLE CONTROL ARM WITH A NEW DESIGN, YET HAVE ONLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO THE #2 BOLT. THE ARMS ARE STILL RUSTED, AND THE FLAWED DESIGN STILL CAUSES THE #2 BOLT TO RUST PREMATURELY. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT AND TOYOTA STILL REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL. *TR

OUR LOCAL TOYOTA/SCION DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS FAULTY REAR WHEEL SENSORS AND CORRODED WIRING. PROPOSED REPAIR INCLUDES REPLACING BOTH REAR HUBS AND REPLACING THE WIRE HARNESS THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE FAULTY HUBS. REPAIR COSTS APPROXIMATE $1,500. MANY OTHER 2008 SCION XD OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS IDENTICAL PROBLEM. SOME SCION OWNERS CANNOT AFFORD THIS REPAIR AND WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE THEIR VEHICLES WITH INACTIVE ABS SYSTEMS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE IGNITION COIL HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61,000.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGED WHILE TRAVELING AT LOW SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CONTINUE THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. ABS AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL MORE MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO SAID BOTH REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSORS HAVE CORRODED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE WIRES. SINCE BOTH REAR WHEEL SENSORS FAILED AT THE SAME TIME, THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A RANDOM PART ISSUE BUT SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN ISSUE. TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND HAS ISSUE A SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS SAME FAILURE ON THE YARIS MODEL. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT APPROX. 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STOPPED RUNNING WITHOUT ANY PRIOR NOTICE OF AN ISSUE. NEEDED TO CROSS, BE COASTED ACROSS 3 LANES OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FREEWAY TO THE EDGE OF THE ROAD. CAR WOULDN'T START, APPEARED THAT BATTERY WAS LOW ON POWER. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. VEHICLE WOULDN'T START AFTER NEW BATTERY INSTALLED, TECH INDICATED FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEM. AFTER $400 COST TO INVESTIGATE PROBLEM, DETERMINE THAT THE CAR WAS OUT OF FUEL EVEN THOUGH TANK STILL REGISTERED AT LEAST A 1/4 OF A TANK. SERVICE REP. INDICATED THAT THE MECHANISM TO DETECT FUEL LEVEL WITHIN THE TANK HAD BECOME STUCK AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. I WILL HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR 4 YEARS NEXT MONTH AND IT HAS LESS THAN 35,000 MILES. SCION ONLY PROVIDES A 3 YEAR / 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. I AM PLANNING TO CONTACT TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY WILL COVER ALL OR PART OF THE REPAIRS. *TR

ABS AND VSC LIGHTS CAME ON. ABS AND VSC NOT WORKING. DEALER STATES IT IS THE RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR THAT HAS A SHORT IN THE WIRING HARNESS. DEALER SAID IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL I GET IT FIXED, BUT THE ABS AND VSC WOULD JUST NOT WORK. AFTER HITTING LARGE BUMP RIGHT BEFORE BRAKING WAS REQUIRED, THE BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. THE CAR IS UNSAFE AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY PER SCION. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

THE WARNING LIGHT CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. THE TECHNICIAN STATED ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC TEST HAD TO BE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE REASON THE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000.
I, LIKE MANY OTHERS LOCATED IN COLD CLIMATES, SEEM TO HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP AN ODD GRINDING, SOMETHING-ENGAGING, MOTORIZED SOUND COME FROM THE BRAKES FOLLOWED BY VERY SOFT, EXTENDED BRAKING AND THE 'ABS' AND 'BRAKE LIGHTS' COMING ON. DURING THE COLD MONTHS, THE LIGHTS SIMPLY NEVER GO OFF AND THIS ISSUE HAPPENS SPORADICALLY. NOW THAT IT IS WARMER, THE LIGHTS ARE ON AND OFF ALL THE TIME AND THE SOUNDS AND GRINDING HAPPEN A DOZEN TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF A 15 MILE DRIVE. I'VE LEARNED TO EXPECT IT AND AS SOON AS I HEAR THE ENGAGING NOISE WHILE IN MOTION; I KNOW THE BRAKING MAY BECOME DIFFICULT. THE ISSUE SO FAR HAS DISAPPEARED EVERY EARLY-SUMMER ONLY TO RETURN, AS EXPECTED, EVERY LATE-FALL. IT FIRST BEGAN SEVERAL YEARS AND CONTINUES TO OCCUR. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE REGARDING FAULTY REAR-HUB SENSORS AND/OR WIRING HARNESSES, AND THEY ARE NOT ISOLATED INCIDENTS. TOYOTA/SCION IS SURELY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS I DON'T HAVE UPWARDS OF $1200 TO FIX THIS ISSUE, AND I DON'T BELIEVE IT FALLS UPON ME TO DO THIS, EITHER. HEARD CLUNKING NOISE FROM FRONT RIGHT OF CAR WHILE ACCELERATING/DECELERATING, WHEN BRAKING AND WHILE DRIVING OVER UNEVEN ROAD SURFACES. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, THERE THEY FOUND #2 SUB-FRAME BOLT HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND THE HEAD HAD FALLEN OUT ONTO MY GARAGE FLOOR. LOOKS AS IF #2 SUB-FRAME BOLT TAKES ON A LOT OF WATER CONDENSATION DRIPPING FROM THE A/C UNIT. WILL REPLACE ALL SIX SUB-FRAME BOLTS ONCE THE BACK ORDERED PARTS COME IN, AFTER DRILLING OUT THE REMAINDER OF THE #2 SUB-FRAME BOLT. #2 SUB-FRAME BOLT LOOKS TO HOLD TOGETHER THE RIGHT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM TO THE BODY/SUB-FRAME. *TR

WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND BEFORE ANY DIAGNOSTICS WERE DONE, I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS A CORRODED SENSOR ON THE REAR DRIVER'S-SIDE DOOR. AFTER RECEIVING A QUOTE FOR $787 FOR THE REPAIRS, I WAS TOLD THAT THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS DESIGNED SO THE PROBLEM WOULD NOT OCCUR AGAIN ON THAT WHEEL. OF COURSE, THERE ARE THREE MORE WHEELS THAT COULD EXPERIENCE THE SAME FAILURE. THE POSSIBILITY OF BRAKES BECOMING SUDDENLY "MUSHY" AND SLOW TO RESPOND IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. MY CAR HAD 34K MILES WHEN THESE PROBLEMS OCCURRED. *TR
