SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. I HAD ALMOST COMPLETED A U TURN (BUT NOT COMPLETELY) TO SLOWLY PULL INTO A PARKING SPOT PARALLEL TO THE SIDEWALK WHEN THE CAR ALL OF A SUDDEN LOUNGED FORWARD (SEE SKID MARKS). IT ONLY SLOWED AFTER HITTING AND DAMAGING THE BRICK WALL.I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES, THE SCREEN FLASHED SOMETHING LIKE: YOUR AUTO PARK IS NOW DISABLED. I WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY EASE INTO MY INTENDED PARKING SPOT AND COME OUT AND ASSESS THE DAMAGES. IT ALL HAPPENED OVER A SPLIT SECOND. THE COLLISION DEFINITELY FELT LIKE THERE'S A MAJOR FAULT WITH THE CAR'S COMPUTER SYSTEM - INSTRUCTING IT TO LURCH FORWARD AT RAPID SPEED AND NOT ABLE TO AUTOSTOP WITH AN OBJECT (BRICK WALL) IN FRONT OF IT. I WAS AT A RESIDENTIAL AREA WITHIN A GATED COMMUNITY. WHEN CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL CAME, THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FILE A REPORT WITHIN PRIVATE PROPERTY. *TR
APPROXIMATELY 5 YEARS AFTER PURCHASING MY TESLA MODEL S, THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET (DOING A REBOOT DUE TO SOME SYSTEM FAILURES). MUCH OF THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE CAR BECAME INOPERABLE BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE, INCLUDING CLIMATE CONTROL, NAVIGATION, MUSIC AND MORE. A WEEK LATER TESLA'S MOBILE TECHNICIAN DID A HARD REBOOT, WHICH THEN ELIMINATED THE ABILITY OF THE CAR TO CHARGE (MAKING IT EFFECTIVELY INOPERABLE). WHEN I FINALLY GOT AN IN-SHOP APPOINTMENT, A WEEK LATER, I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THE MCU, AS MY WARRANTY PERIOD WAS OVER. EVEN NOW, THERE ARE CONTINUING ISSUES WITH THE VOICE RECOGNITION SYSTEM. *TR
CAR WAS STATIONARY. STARTED TESLA AND MAIN NAVIGATION AND CAMERA SCREEN. MCU FAILURE RESULTS IN LOSS OF AUDIBLE AND VISUAL FEATURES PROVIDED BY THE TOUCHSCREEN, SUCH AS INFOTAINMENT, NAVIGATION, AND WEB BROWSING. THIS INCLUDES LOSS OF REAR CAMERA IMAGE DISPLAY WHEN REVERSE GEAR IS SELECTED, RESULTING IN REDUCED REAR VISIBILITY WHEN BACKING. *TR
REGARDING TESLA MODEL S VEHICLES (MODEL YEARS 2012-2018) THAT HAVE AN MCU FAILURE DUE TO A DEFECTIVE MEMORY CHIP DESIGN, IN ADDITION TO LOSING THE BACKUP CAMERA WHEN THIS FAILS, THE TURN SIGNALS ALSO BECOME INOPERABLE. THIS HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED. *TR
RANDOM FAILURE INCLUDING LOSS OF CONTROLS USING MCU1. FREQUENT RE-SETTING / RE-BOOTING REQUIRED TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE USING MCU 1 CONTROLS.
THE MCU IN MY CAR WENT OUT. I WAS PARKED WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I WAS A FEW MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY. I PAID $1795.00 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. WHEN MY MCU WENT OUT THIS DISABLED MY BLINKERS. THIS IS THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED THAT THE NHSTA IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING.
IN A PARKING LOT TRAVELING 5MPH RAN OVER AN ELEVATED SPEED BUMP ON LEFT SIDE OF CAR WHEN HEARD A SNAP IN DRIVER REAR WHEEL AREA. PULLED OVER INTO PARKING SPOT AND TIRE WAS CANTERED. CONTROL ARM HAD SNAPPED. HAD 65K MILES AND TESLA TOLD ME IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY YET THE NEW CONTROL ARM LOOKS MUCH STURDIER AND DIFFERENT THEN THE OLD ONE. I HAVE PICTURES OF BOTH BUT THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM FOR THESE 2015 AND BEFORE MODELS. PLEASE HELP. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MAIN SCREEN TURNS OFF - REBOOTS ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES OFF- WHILE OFF- TURN SIGNALS ARE NOT AUDIBLE INSIDE CAR ALL OTHER SAFETY PARAMETERS ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE: COLLISION AVOIDANCE, BRAKE ASSISTANCE, THIS HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES - I MUST TAKE A PICTURE WHILE OCCURRING WHICH HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING. TESLA HAS FULL ACCESS TO LOGS. DIAGNOSTICS BY TESLA REPRESENTATIVE TELLS ME THAT MY MEMORY CHIP IS WITHIN PARAMETERS AND THUS NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE REPLACED. ALTHOUGH I MUST CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE THE REBOOTS THAT SHUTDOWN MOST OF ITS FEATURES WHILE IT OCCURS. NOT TO MENTION MY DAILY OCCURRENCES: - CHARGING SYSTEM ADJUSTMENT PANEL DOES NOT DRAW ON SCREEN PROPERLY; WHICH CAUSES INCORRECT SELECTION OF AMOUNT OF CHARGE NEEDED. CENTER ARROW WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO SHOW DOESN'T UNTIL AFTER SELECTED.
FAILURE OF MCU CONSOLE LEADING TO LOSS OF BACK UP CAMERA, CLIMATE, RADIO AND ALL CONTROLS RELATED TO CAR SETTINGS INCLUDING SAFETY SETTINGS. TESLA UNABLE TO REPAIR FOR WEEKS WITH NO LOANER LEADING ME TO DRIVE IN THIS QUESTIONABLY SAFE SITUATION. MCU REPLACED WITH MCU THAT HAS THE SAME MEMORY CHIP ISSUES AND WILL LIKELY FAIL SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE. IN ADDITION SINCE REPLACEMENT CAR HAS HAD ISSUES WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER RESETTING. AFTER THE 12V BATTERY ON OUR CAR DIED, IT WAS REPLACED BY TESLA SERVICE. AFTER THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED, THE CENTER SCREEN (MCU) WOULD NOT COME ON. THIS SCREEN CONTROLS ALMOST EVERYTHING IN THE CAR, INCLUDING BACKUP CAMERA, PARK DISTANCE CONTROLS, AUTO-PILOT, DOOR LOCKS, SUSPENSION, ADJUSTING BRAKING AND COLLISION WARNINGS, OPENING AND CLOSING SUNROOF, CHARGING (IT'S AN ELECTRIC CAR - NONFUNCTIONAL IF WE CAN'T ADJUST CHARGING), CLIMATE CONTROL, REMOTE COMMUNICATION, SOFTWARE UPDATES, ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM, ETC. WE CONTACTED TESLA, AND THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD US THESE SCREENS REGULARLY FAIL AT AROUND 4 YEARS (OUR VEHICLE IS 4-1/2 YEARS OLD). IN ADDITION, FAILURE IS APPARENTLY ACCELERATED BY THE FAILURE OF THE 12V BATTERY. AFTER WAITING MANY WEEKS FOR A "REPLACEMENT PART," WE WERE CONTACTED AND TOLD THEY HAD ACCIDENTALLY ORDERED A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT, WHICH WOULD COST $2,700 (WE HAD BEEN QUOTED $1,300). THE CAR HAS BEEN UNDRIVEABLE FOR MONTHS. IN ADDITION, IF THIS IS A PART THAT REGULARLY FAILS, IT SEEMS LIKE TESLA SHOULD COVER THE REPLACEMENT. WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY $2,700 TO REPLACE A PART THAT IS APPARENTLY KNOWN TO PREDICTABLY FAIL. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.
IN 2018 TESLA NOTIFIED ME OF NEEDING TO INSPECT AND REPLACE 5 BOLTS SECURING MY STEERING BOX AND POWER STEERING UNITS. THEY DID THAT AND LEFT. I HAD SERIOUS MEDICAL ISSUES, SO MY TESLA MODEL S HAD ONLY 7,590 MILES. IN 2020 WITHIN JUST A FEW MILES BUT NEARLY 2 YEARS FROM THAT 5-BOLT REPLACEMENT, I WAS DRIVING ON I89 TOWARDS A TESLA SUPERCHARGER, I FELT THE CAR WAS WANDERING EVER SO SLIGHTLY WITHIN MY LANE, SO I WAS UNEASY, BUT ATTRIBUTED IT TO MY 4 STUDDED SWEDISH SNOW TIRES. ARRIVING AT THE SUPERCHARGER, NOTICED MUCH STEERING EFFORT TO BACK INTO CHARGING POSITION. WHEN LEAVING, IT HAD MORE EFFORT TO STEER, AND IT DIDN'T BOTHER ME MUCH ONCE I WAS ROLLING ALONG. SAME WANDERING PROBLEM ON THE INTERSTATE. LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THE 38 PAGE SERVICE BULLETIN FROM TESLA. #SB-18-32-002 R1 SEVERAL TIMES IN IT TESLA WARNED THAT IF AT ANY POINT MORE THAN 1 BOLT IS REMOVED AT A TIME, THE STEERING BOX MUST BE REPLACED. THEY DID NOT ELABORATE AS TO WHY. IT SEEMS NOW WE KNOW. ANOTHER ISSUE I MENTIONED TO ELECTRIFIED GARAGE IN SEABROOK, NH IS THE REAR OF THE CAR SETTLES DOWN TO NEARLY TOUCHING THE REAR WHEELS OVERNIGHT. I SUSPECTED AN AIR LEAK AND THEY REPORTED THAT I NEEDED TWO REAR AIR SHOCK ASSEMBLIES AND A NEW STEERING BOX. THEY SAID TESLA OFFERED NO REAR SHOCK REBUILD KIT CONTAINING NEW IMPROVED SEALS. I AM IN SHOCK OVER BOTH THESE PROBLEMS AT 7,600 MILES AND SENT 2 EMAIL LETTERS OFF TO TESLA, AND NO REPLY FROM EITHER LETTER. EACH TIME THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES OR SLOWS DOWN/STOPS, IT MAKES A LOUD THUMP NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE, USUALLY AUDIBLE AT BACK RIGHT PORTION OF VEHICLE. TESLA HAS DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE ON THIS VEHICLE AS A CRACKED REAR SUBFRAME. UPON RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ONLINE, MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS AND EVEN RECALLS/CLASS ACTION SUITS HAVE BEEN FILED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. IN CHINA, FOR INSTANCE, THERE ARE MULTIPLE RECALLS SET UP TO ADDRESS THIS KNOWN ISSUE. HOWEVER, THERE HAS NOT BEEN A SUCCESSFUL FILING IN THE US AS FAR AS I CAN FIND. ULTIMATELY TESLA SHOULD COVER THE COST OF THIS REPAIR SINCE ITS A KNOWN ISSUE ON THIS YEAR AND MODEL, BUT THEY ARE FORCING US TO PAY ($2917.50, NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY). THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO STEM FROM WHAT TESLA CALLS A HARD POTHOLE OR SUSPENSION EVENT, ALTHOUGH THERE HAS NOT BEEN ONE ON THE VEHICLE SINCE WE PURCHASED IT, PRE-OWNED. REGARDLESS, IF THE ISSUE IS KNOWN, WHICH IT CLEARLY IS, BY THE MANUFACTURER, THEY SHOULD COVER THE COST OF REPAIR OR RECALL.
PRIMARY TOUCHSCREEN FAILURE (MCU). THE CAR WAS STATIONARY PARKED IN GARAGE. THE PRIMARY TOUCHSCREEN FAILED AND WOULD NOT START. AIR CONDITIONING, TURN SIGNALS, AND BACKUP CAMERA STOPPED WORKING, ALONG WITH ALL OTHER SETTINGS BECAUSE NON-FUNCTIONAL. CAR IS 5 YEARS OLD AND 45,000 MILES. THE MCU TOUCHSCREEN HAD TO BE REPLACED. *TR
TESLA HAS BEEN UNABLE TO HELP US NAVIGATE THROUGH THIS EMMC 8GB RECALL AND PROVIDE US WITH EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. THEY HAVE ATTEMPTED TO DENY OUR REIMBURSEMENT REQUEST BASED ON INACCURATE INFORMATION AND EVEN SHARED UNRELATEDINVOICES AS THE BASES FOR THE DENIAL. OUR MCU WAS REPLACED DUE TO THE EMMC 8GB CARD FAILING LAST YEAR. THE SYMPTOMS AND REPAIRS NOTED ON THE INVOICE ARE IDENTICAL TO THE RECALL INFORMATION. FURTHERMORE, THE TECHS AT THE SERVICE CENTER TOLD US VERY CLEARLY THAT IT WAS DUE TO THE MEMORY ISSUE, BUT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AT THE TIME. I AM VERY FRUSTRATED THAT I CANNOT CALL ANYONE TO RESOLVE THIS AND AM REACHING OUT FOR HELP!
THE MCU/SCREEN STOPPED WORKING AND I WAS ABLE TONDRIVE, BUT NOT USE ANY SAFETY FEATURES, INCLUDING BLINKERS, BACK-UP CAMERA, OR NAVIGATION. IT TOOK OVER A WEEK TO GET A SERVICE APPOINTMENT AND THE ITEM WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, SO I HAD TO PAY OVER $1600 OUT OF POCKET. THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, AND I WAS ABLE TONDRIVE, THOUGH NOT AS SAFELY AS EXPECTED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 TESLA MODEL S. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE DISPLAY SCREEN STOPPED FUNCTIONING. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V035000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, VISIBILITY, EXTERIOR LIGHTING). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TESLA SERVICE - LATHAM (326 OLD NISKAYUNA RD LATHAM, NY 12110) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE EMBEDDED MULTI-MEDIA CARD (EMMC) CONTROLLER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 118,398.*LN CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER TO GET REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR, BUT THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THEM THAT THEY HAD NO RECORD OF THE REPAIR.
THE VEHICLE HAD COMPUTER ISSUES DURING OCT10-FEB1. LOSS OF CONNECTIVITY, REBOOTS OCCUR WHILE DRIVING. NO SPEEDOMETER. NO TURN SIGNAL INDICATORS, NO PARKING BRAKE ABILITY, I PARKED VEHICLE FEB1 FOR SAFETY REASONS. ATTEMPTED TO GET SERVICE. VEHICLE BY APRIL[15] HAD GONE FROM INTERMITTENT TO PERMANENT. NO VISIBILITY OF COMPUTER SCREEN.NO FUNCTIONS. NO HIGH HEADLIGHTS, JUST LOW HEADLIGHTS, NO CRASH IMMINENT BUZZER, NO AUTOBRAKING. DRIVE&REVERSE ONLY, STEERING DIFFERENT, SLIGHTLY STIFFER, NO HANDS FREE PHONE & NO GPS ABILITY. EASY TO GET LOST OR CONFUSED AS TO WHERE TO TURN OR WHETHER TO TURN OR GO FORWARD. ARM OUT WINDOWS FOR TURNING, REDUCED SPEED CONTROLS. NO LANE DEPARTURE BUZZER. CHANGING LANE REFUSAL W ADJACENT CAR PRESENT IN LANE INOPERATIVE. COMP. NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY, WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, THE REPAIR WAS DECLINED, STATING 'IT MUST BE COMPLETELY DEAD BEFORE IT CAN BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY' BY APR15 COMP. WAS COMPLETELY DEAD BUT I HAD DECLARED WARRANTY INADEQUATE UPON FIRST REFUSAL TO COVER IT, JULY, NO PARTS AVAILABLE, SO MANY WEEKS OF WAITING. DEALER UNABLE TO FIND AN UPGRADE PART TO SELL TO ME. WAITING FOR A $2500 INSTALL OF A NEW PART THAT I AM WILLING TO PAY FOR BUT CANNOT PROCURE QUICKLY ENUF, NO MATTER WHAT. DRIVING WITHOUT CONTROL OF HEADLIGHTS OR WITHOUT TURN SIGNALS HAS BEEN CURTAILED BUT FOR EMERGENCY FOOD PROCUREMENT. DOCTOR VISITS, MASK&GLOVE REPLACEMENTS FOR THE COVID SITUATION REQUIRES THOSE. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY I GUESS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED PERMANENTLY AT HOME & ONLY A FEW SUDDEN TIMES TEMPORARILY ON THE ROAD. MEDIA CONTROL UNIT WENT COMPLETELY OUT AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF TROUBLE. CAR TOOK LONGER TO START UP AND CONTROLS OF SAFETY FEATURES WERE NOT WORKING. THIS HAPPENED WHILE STARTING CAR AND ALSO WAS NOT AVAILABLE WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHICH CAUSED A DANGEROUS CONDITION. *TR
MY MCU OR MAIN TOUCH SCREEN HAS FAILED. I NO LONGER HAVE CONTROL OF NAVIGATION, MUSIC, HVAC CONTROLS, BACK UP CAMERA, TURN SIGNALS, AUTOPILOT, ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, HEADLIGHT CONTROLS, SUNROOF CONTROLS, OR ANY FUNCTION BESIDES DRIVING, STEERING, AND BRAKING, THE CAR WAS AT MY HOME WHEN IT WAS RECEIVING AN OVER THE AIR UPDATE. THE CAR THEN NOTIFIED ME THAT THE DOWNLOAD HAD FAILED. I WENT OUT TO THE CAR TO FIND THE SCREEN COMPLETELY BLACK. TRYING TO RESET THE SCREEN DID NOT WORK AND TESLA DIAGNOSIS LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE MCU NO LONGER WORKS. DOING MY OWN RESEARCH I HAD MY EMMC CHIP LOOKED AT AND FOUND THE FILES WERE CORRUPT AND THE CHIP WAS 90% FULL. TESLA WILL NOT REPLACE JUST THIS CHIP AND ONLY THE MCU IN FULL. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN MY CAR SINCE THIS ISSUE. *LN*JB *TR
CONCERNING NHTSA RECALL 21V-035, FOR TESLA MODEL S EMMC MEMORY. I HAD MY MCU REPLACED IN APRIL, 2020 BY TESLA IN PEABODY, MASSACHUESTTS AT MY OWN EXPENSE, TO ADDRESS FAILING EMMC MEMORY AS COVERED BY RECALL 21V-035. UNDER THE TERMS OF THE RECALL, TESLA HAS PROMISED TO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAD WORK DONE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND PAID OUT-OF-POCKET. I WAS ONE OF THESE OWNERS. TESLA IS STEADFASTLY REFUSING TO REIMBURSE MY CLAIM, DESPITE BEING THE ONLY OPTION OFFERED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE WHICH SHOWED SYMPTOMS EXCLUSIVELY ASSOCIATED WITH FAILURE OF THE EMMC MEMORY. I WOULD LIKE NHTSA'S HELP WITH GETTING THE REFUND THAT TESLA OWES ME. THE INVOICE FOR THE WORK IS ATTACHED.

ALL CONTROLS WEREN'T USABLE OR FUNCTIONING LIKE AC, HEATING, RADIO, GUIDANCE MAPS AND NAVIGATION, CHARGING DOOR PORT WOUND OPEN, CHARGING SLOWS TO TAKE DAYS AND DAYS TO CHARGE THE CAR; LITERALLY MOST FEATURES ON THE CAR. REPAIR COST $2,326.44 ON 4/28/2020 CAR WAS IN OUR GARAGE. STUCK BETWEEN COMPUTER UPDATING. THIS IS A KNOWN TESLA ISSUE THEY HAVE KNOWN FOR A LONG TIME. MEMORY CHIP MCU GETS FILLED WITH INFO AND THE CAR'S COMPUTER STOPS WORKING. ALL EARLY MODEL S AND X 2012 TO 2017 ARE EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE AFTER A FEW YEARS OF OWNERSHIP.

SINCE THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS ON DURING MCU FAILURE, IT WOULD REMAIN ON, NO MATTER WHAT I DID, THEREBY (A) RUNNING DOWN THE BATTERY, AND (B) POTENTIALLY CREATING A MAINTENANCE OR FIRE HAZARD (AC RUNNING FOR 12 HOURS). ALSO NON-FUNCTIONAL WAS CRUISE CONTROL, RADIO, REAR CAMERA, AUDIBLE WARNINGS (LIKE TURN-SIGNAL CLICKS), INABILITY TO CONTROL BATTERY CHARGING, LOSS OF NAVIGATION, PARKING WARNING CHIMES, ENERGY USAGE GRAPH, CELL FEATURES, ETC. SIGNIFICANTLY, THE "CREEP" FEATURE, WHICH MOVES THE CAR FORWARD WHEN PEDAL IS LIFTED, ALSO DID NOT WORK -- CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO RELEARN CERTAIN DRIVE FEATURES, AND AT ONE POINT ALLOWING THE CAR TO ROLL BACKWARD WHEN IT USUALLY WOULD HAVE CREEPED FORWARD. IT'S UNKNOWN IF CERTAIN EMERGENCY BRAKING FEATURES WOULD HAVE WORKED. MAIN VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEMS FUNCTIONED (STEERING & BRAKES), BUT NOTHING ELSE DID, AND DRIVING WAS VERY CONCERNING. OCCASIONALLY THE MAPS ON THE SCREEN APPEAR TO HAVE A SEIZURE/ SKITTING AND FLICKERING WHICH IS HIGHLY DISTRACTING WHILE DRIVING DUE TO MAPS POPPING IN AND AND OUT (GOING FROM THE MAP TEXTURE TO A WHITE SCREEN AND BACK RAPIDLY). UNABLE TO ACCESS OR USE ANY BUILT IN SYSTEMS. UNABLE TO TURN ON OR OFF SAFETY FEATURES/ AIRBAGS. UNABLE TO MANUALLY CONTROL SUSPENSION HEIGHT TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO UNDERSIDE OF CAR ON ROADS WITH POT HOLES. UNABLE TO ACTIVATE SECURITY FEATURES LIKE PIN NUMBER TO DRIVE. UNABLE TO SYNC OR UNSYNC CLIMATE ZONES IN THE CAR. ESSENTIALLY ANY FUNCTION NORMALLY ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THE TOUCH SCREEN IS UNUSABLE. THE PROBLEM HAS DEVELOPED OVER TIME WITH INITIAL PROBLEMS WITH TOUCH SCREEN THAT WOULD BEGIN TO WORK AFTER A SHORT WHILE TURNING INTO A POINT NOW WHERE THE SCREEN NEVER WORKS.
The contact owns a 2015 Tesla Model S. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the main center display failed not allowing the contact to use the rearview camera, the turn signals, and all the electrical functions. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the eMMC flash memory device needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that a couple of days later he received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21V035000 (Back Over Prevention, Visibility, Exterior lighting). The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 49,274.
Tesla was to rebate the money for the VCM Daughterboard and did NOT. We have been trying to collect this money for over a year!
MY VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY TESLA'S SUNNYVALE SERVICE CENTER AND WHEN RETURNED, THEY OBVIOUSLY NEVER DID A SAFETY TEST. AFTER DRIVING DOWN THE STREET I FOUND THEY DIDN'T RECONNECT SEVERAL CABLES, INCLUDING THE FOG LIGHTS AND THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS. THEY ALSO DISABLED SEVERAL SAFETY FEATURES (LANE DEPARTURE WARNINGS, SPEED WARNINGS, DOOR LOCKS, CHILD LOCKS) WITHOUT TELLING ME ANY OF THIS!
MAIN CONTROL SCREEN (MCU1) WENT BLACK, DISABLING ACCESS TO MOST CONTROLS INCLUDING DEFROSTER. HAD REPAIR DONE (OUT OF WARRANTY) AT A COST OF $1800. PROBLEM IS POORLY DESIGNED ELECTRONICS CAUSING FAILURE OF MEMORY CHIP IN UNIT BECAUSE OF TOO MANY READ/WRITE CYCLES. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THOUSANDS OF 2014-2016 CARS HAVE SUFFERED THIS PROBLEM IN THE LAST YEAR.

THE CAR STARTED TAKING ABOUT 2 TO 3 TIMES LONGER TO BOOT UP AND AFTER A DAY OR TWO, THE SCREEN STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. AFTER DROPPING OFF AT THE TESLA SERVICE STATION, THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THERE WERE MCU ISSUES WITH THE MODEL S FROM 2016 AND EARLIER DUE TO THE MEMORY CAPACITY OF THE CHIP USED.
I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND THE SCREEN WAS BLACK. ALL THE CONTROLS WERE STUCK...FAN/AC...BACK UP CAMERA DID NOT WORK. MY TURNING SIGNALS DID NOT WORK. TESLA SERVICE CENTER WAS CLOSED SO ALL THE AC DID NOT TURN OFF AND DRAINED THE BATTERY ALL THE WAY TO 0 RANGE. TOOK A LOT OF TROUBLE TO GET TO THE SERVICE CENTER THE NEXT DAY. THEY CONCLUDED THE MCU WAS DEAD AND HAD TO BE REPLACED CLAIMING THAT IT WAS WEAR AND TEAR. WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE MCU CRASHED AND COMPRISED SAFETY OF THE CAR WITH THE TURNING SIGNALS, SUSPENSION AND REAR BACK UP CAMERA NOT WORKING AMONGST OTHERS SINCE THE MCU CONTROLS EVERYTHING. WE BELIEVED TESLA KNEW OF THE PROBLEM AND PUT IT ON OWNERS TO REPLACE AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE IF OUT OF WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN AROUND WHEN THE WARRANTY ENDS. WE HAVE 2 TESLAS AND BOTH THE MCUS DIED A LITTLE OVER 50K. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY RECALL AND THE MCUS REPLACED AT NO COST. TERRIBLE BUSINESS PRACTICE AND SERVICE FOR SUCH EXPENSIVE CARS. WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED IN TESLA.

THE MCU AND THE SPEEDOMETER OF MY TESLA ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY BECAUSE THE CAR MANUFACTURER MADE A DESIGN ERROR WITH THE CHIP CARD AND ALSO ON THE WAY OF THE CAR CONTROLS THE HEAT COMING IN TO THE CABIN AND IT LITERALLY MELTS DOWN THE SCREEN AND THE SPEEDOMETER. GLUE COMES OUT EVERY MINUTE CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE IT GETS STICKY ON YOUR HANDS AND WHILE YOU TRY TO REMOVE IT THE SCREEN GOES BLACK OR FREEZES. THE MOST COMMON ONE IS THAT THE SCREEN OR MCU FREEZES UP CONSTANTLY AND THEN THE CAR CAN'T BE RUN. HARD RESET WORK SOMETIMES AND SOMETIMES WON'T . I CONTACT THEM AND THEY WANTED ME TO PAY $2600 FOR SOMETHING IT IS THEIR DESIGN FLAW . THIS IS A DANGER FOR THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESS BY TESLA REPLACING THE MCU AT NOT COST SINCE IT IS A DESIGN PROBLEM . NO WARNING WHATSOEVER, THE 17' TOUCHSCREEN GOES BLACK ON OUR MODEL S. I TRY THE REBOOT, BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. IT'S EARLY FEBRUARY, SO HERE IN ALABAMA, IT'S COLD. WE KEEP THE CAR IN THE GARAGE. NO CLIMATE CONTROL IS WORKING. WE PULL OUT, HEAD TO MY WIFE'S FAMILIES HOUSE 7-8 MILES AWAY, AND THE WINDSHIELD HAS A COUPLE OF INCH STRIP AT THE BOTTOM THAT VISIBLE. SO DRIVING BETWEEN 10-15 MPH, WE MAKE IT TO THEIR HOUSE. I FINALLY GET AHOLD OF TESLA A LITTLE WHILE LATER. AFTER ABOUT 30 MINUTES OR LESS ON THE PHONE WITH THEM, THEY SAID THEY SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THE LADY STATED THAT THE TESLA ENGINEERS KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE BEEN WORKING TO GET IT FIXED. I WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR REPAIR ON FEBRUARY, 17TH. THEY CONTACTED ME TWO OR THREE DAYS BEFORE THEN AND SAID THEY WERE ANTICIPATING THE PART TO ARRIVE ON FEBRUARY 27TH, SO THEY PROACTIVELY RESCHEDULED MY APPOINTMENT FOR FEBRUARY 28TH. AFTER CALLING, EMAILING AND THEN FINALLY CHATTING TESLA ON FEBRUARY 27TH, THEY SAID THE PART STILL HADN'T ARRIVED. THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE GOING TO ESCALATE MY CASE AND THEY ALSO RESCHEDULED MY APPOINTMENT FOR MARCH 13TH WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT THE PART WOULD BE IN BY THEN. A LOANER VEHICLE WASN'T OFFERED AFTER ASKING MULTIPLE TIMES. THE REASON WAS BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED FROM A THIRD PARTY, NOT TESLA. WE HAD THE VEHICLE ALMOST A YEAR AND A HALF BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. WE ARE ON RURAL TO COUNTRY (NOT DIRT) ROADS. THE HVAC DOESN'T WORK AT ALL, NOR DOES THE PARKING SENSORS. NAVIGATION IS OUT, PRETTY MUCH ALL THE EXTRA FEATURES (MOSTLY) YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT USING.

WITH THE RECENT NEWS ON NHTSA INVESTIGATING TESLA MODEL S TOUCHSCREEN UNIT PROBLEMS, I LIKE TO ADD MY EXPERIENCE FOR THE RECORD: ON 01/31/20, MY COMPUTER SCREEN DIED WHICH LIMITED THE CAR'S FUNCTIONALITY (E.G. NO HVAC, RADIO, BLUETOOTH, ETC). ON 02/06/20, TESLA CAME OUT TO INSPECT MY CAR, AND VERIFIED I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER. THE TECHNICIAN ADMITTED HOW BAD THE PROBLEM WAS FOR PRODUCTIONS WITH MCU V1 COMPUTERS. BUT BEFORE THE TECHNICIAN LEFT, HE PERFORMED A BATTERY DISCONNECT WHICH MADE IT WORSE. NOW THE CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO CHARGE WHICH FORCED ME TO TAKE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO TESLA TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER. ON 02/19/20, THE REPLACEMENT COMPUTER WAS INSTALLED AT THE COST OF $2,122.50.
