MCU1 MEMORY CHIP PROBLEM STARTING TO SHOW SYMPTOMS OF SLOWNESS, REBOOTING, NON RESPONSIVENESS AND NEEDS REBOOTING WHILE DRIVING TO GET IT TO WORK. WHEN IT CRASHES WILL BREAK BACKUP CAMERA, TURN SIGNALS, AND ABILITY TO CONTROL DEFOGGERS WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
THE TOUCHSCREEN IS FINALLY DEAD, WOULDN'T TURN ON. ALL SETTINGS RELATED TO THE TOUCHSCREEN IS ALL GONE, THUS ALL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS CONTROLLED BY THE TOUCHSCREEN IS OFF, INCLUDING BACKING UP CAMERA. I FELT VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE CAR WOULD TAKE A VERY LONG TIME TO TURN ON. WHEN I SLOWED DOWN AND STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT, IT ROLLED BACKWARD SINCE I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE CREEP MODE WAS DISABLED WITH THE DEAD TOUCHSCREEN. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO NOTICE THE CAR ROLLING AND STOPPED IN TIME BEFORE HITTING SOME OTHER CAR.
MY TOUCHSCREEN HAS FAILED COMPLETELY AND I AM UNABLE TO USE MY BLINKERS OR CONTROL MY LIGHTS THIS IS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN AND TESLA HAS STATED THAT IT'S NORMAL FOR COMPUTER SYSTEMS TO FAIL.
THE MCU WENT OUT. TURN SIGNALS, BRAKE LIGHTS, BACKUP CAMERA, HVAC CONTROLS, ALL WENT WITH IT. CAR WOULD DRIVE, BUT WOULD NOT
CENTER CONSUL SCREEN TURN OFF AND WON'T COME BACK ON CAN'T USE NAVIGATION BACKUP CAMERA NO TURN SIGNAL SOUND OR RADIO SOUND OR ANY SOUND INVOLVE THE CENTER COUNSEL
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 TESLA MODEL S. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT TOUCH SCREEN WAS INOPERABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY, THE SYSTEM FLICKERED AND FAILED TO CHARGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BACK-UP CAMERA WAS ALSO INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS UNDRIVABLE. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WENT TO THE RESIDENCE TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,586.
THE ISSUE IS RELATED TO MCU (MEDIA CONTROL UNIT). BACK IN JUNE 2020, MY VEHICLE HAS ISSUE WITH MCU. THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE UNIT AND TYSONS CORNER ,VA SERVICE CENTER PERFORMED THE SERVER TO REPLACE IT. ON 11/09/2020 TESLA ISSUED THE WARRANTY ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT (HTTPS://WWW.TESLA.COM/SUPPORT/WARRANTY-ADJUSTMENT-PROGRAM) AND IT WAS STATED THAT IT ONLY APPLIES TO THE ORIGINAL OWNERS, BUT NOT SECOND (TRANSFERRED) OWNERS - WHICH IS UNFARE. WE BROUGHT IN FEB 2019 AND THE CURRENT MILLAGE IS AROUND 37K. PLEASE REVIEW THE REQUEST AND HELP TO GET THE REFUND FOR THE CHARGES INCURRED FOR REPAIRING THE MCU
THE MCU ON MY 2015 TESLA IS STARTING TO SHOW EARLY SIGNS OF FAILURE. IT SOMETIMES REBOOTS AND TAKES SEVERAL MINUTES TO COME BACK, THE BLUETOOTH CONNECTION TO MY PHONE FAILS OFTEN, AND THE SCREEN IS STARTING TO FLICKER. THIS MCU FAILURE IS DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ERROR CAUSING MULTIPLE REPLACEMENTS. AS THIS PROBLEM GETS WORSE IT WILL RENDER THE CAR INOPERABLE AS THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WILL FAIL.
TESLA MODEL S CENTER CONSOLE SCREEN GOES BLACK AND WILL NOT RESTART. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. WITH IT BEING THE BRAINS OF THE CAR, ITS USELESS. APPARENTLY TESLA KNOWS ABOUT IT, BUT NO RECALL IS BEING ISSUED. THE REPAIR IS AROUND 2,000. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
MEDIA CONTROL UNIT (MCU) FAILURE
MCU1 TOUCHSCREEN HAS AN EXPECTED SHORT LIFE SPAN DUE TO TESLA'S LOGGING PRACTICES. THIS PRACTICE SHORTENS THE LIFESPAN OF MCU1 (MAIN CONTROL UNIT) DEVICES SIGNIFICANTLY AND HINDERS TOUCHSCREEN CAPACITY, REMOVES AUTO PILOT CAPABILITIES, AND PREVENTS AIR CONDITIONING CONTROL OR MEDIA CONTROL. *TR
2015 TESLA MODEL S WITH 39,000 MILES HAD CENTRE SCREEN FAIL. CAR IS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. NO CONTROLS ARE ACTIVE. KNOWN ISSUE WITH EMMC CHIP. CAR WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME, WILL NOT RESET. *TR
THE CENTER SCREEN/MCU SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING (WENT BLACK). TRYING REBOOT/STANDARD TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS HAS NOT YIELD ANY SUCCESS. AFTER A FEW DAYS, MANY OTHER FEATURES, INCLUDING BLINKERS (EXCLUDING EMERGENCY/FLASHERS LIGHTS, WHICH ACTIVATE BUT LACKING SOUND) STOPPED WORKING. MADE AN APPOINTMENT THROUGH TESLA APP, WITH DESCRIPTION OF THE ISSUE, ON 6/24 FOR 6/30 (EARLIEST AVAILABLE DATE); ON 6/26, I RECEIVED AN EMAIL THAT THE APPOINTMENT HAD BEEN MOVED TO A SERVICE CENTER FOR 7/7. ON THE SAME DAY (6/26/2020) AND ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER INITIAL RMAIL, I RECEIVED ANOTHER EMAIL THAT MY APPOINTMENT HAD BEEN CANCELED "PER YOUR REQUEST", BUT I HAD NOT REQUESTED A CANCELLATION. I VISITED TESLA'S SERVICE CENTER IN SAN DIEGO - MIRAMAR BETWEEN 7/7-7/10 TO INQUIRE ABOUT SERVICE CANCELLATION AND REQUEST A SERVICE FOR MY CAR, BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD CANCELLED MY APPOINTMENT DUE TO PARTS UNAVAILABILITY AND I WOULD BE CONTACTED LATER ONCE PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE TO SCHEDULE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT; HOWEVER, THE SERVICE CENTER REFUSED TO LOOK AT/EVALUATE MY CAR WHATSOEVER "DUE TO COVID" AND TOLD ME THAT BASED ON OTHER SITUATIONS, THEY'RE VERY SURE THE MCU NEEDS TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED (~$1500 OUT OF POCKET COST) BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE A REPLACEMENT YET; I EXPLAINED MY BLINKERS AND MANY OTHER SAFETY FEATURES (REARVIEW CAMERA, CLIMATE CONTROL, "AUTO-PILOT", ETC.) ALSO NOT WORKING AND THEY MENTIONED THOSE SHOULD TYPICALLY CONTINUE TO WORK AFTER A MCU MALFUNCTION BUT THEY WILL NOT TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR UNTIL THEY RECEIVE REPLACEMENT MCU. IT'S NOW PAST 8/3 AND I STILL HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM TESLA ON PATH TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE/NEW SERVICE APPOINTMENT. IT'S ALSO WORTH MENTIONING I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING CAR'S CURRENT MILEAGE (LAST UPDATE ON APP FROM 6/23 READS 103,683 MI) OR OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE DUE TO THIS ISSUE AS WELL.
TESLA SCREEN WENT COMPLETELY BLACK AND WILL NOT COME ON. NO BACK UP CAMERA, NO TURN SIGNAL, NO RADIO, NO A/C. THIS HAPPENED ONE MORNING WHEN I WENT TO TURN THE CAR ON. HAVE TRIED RESET. MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH TESLA TO REPAIR BUT IN THE PROCESS OF RESEARCHING PROBLEM, HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE A KNOWN FAILURE OF MANY TESLA'S BETWEEN 2014-2017. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND TESLA SHOULD BE DOING A RECALL. I AM AFRAID TO EVEN DRIVE MY CAR TO THE SERVICE CENTER FOR REPAIR THAT IS 15 MILES FROM MY HOME. *TR
THE MAIN SCREEN ON THE CAR (MCU) HAS HAD ISSUES FOR OVER A YEAR. IT WOULD SOMETIMES JUST GO BLANK WHILE DRIVING, OR NOT TURN ON WHEN GETTING IN CAR OR THE RESPONSE TIME SO SLOW (WHICH WOULD BE A REAL SAFETY CONCERN AND CAUSED ME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD SEVERAL TIMES) THE REAR CAMERA WOULD STOP WORKING. I JUST PAID $1639.00 TO HAVE THE UNIT REPLACED, I WAS INFORMED IT WAS PAST IT'S USEFUL LIFE AND WOULD FAIL IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THESE FAILURES BEGAN HAPPENING IN APRIL OF 2019 FROM PARKED TO 75 MPH. *TR
APPROXIMATELY 6 WEEKS AGO THE COMPUTER WOULDN'T RESPOND AND WOULDN'T REBOOT WHEN I STARTED THE CAR. I CAN'T CONTROL THINGS CONTROLLED BY THE SCREEN (BACK UP CAMERA,ETC). I'VE HAD TWO REPAIR APPOINTMENTS BUT NO PART AVAILABLE SO NO REPAIR. I HAVEN'T BEEN DRIVING THE CAR FOR 6 WEEKS NOW. THEY KEEP REPORTING "PART PENDING".
TESLA MODEL S 2015, THE MAIN SCREEN (MCU) GOES BLACK ON/OFF. THE MANUFACTURER SUGGESTED DOING A REBOOT, BUT IT DID NOT HELP. NOW MCU IS PERMANENTLY BLACK (NON-FUNCTIONAL) AND THE CAR HAS LOST MANY FUNCTIONALITIES, INCLUDING TWO THAT ARE SAFETY RISKS, THERE IS NO REARVIEW CAMERA AND TURN SIGNALS DON'T WORK. *TR
WELL DOCMENTED FAILURE OF A MEMORY CHIP THAT HAS BEEN DOCUTETED TO FAIL AFTER A CERTIN AMOUNT OF READ/WRITE CYCLES, TESLA HAS BEEN WELL AWARE OF THIS FAULT FOR YEARS AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES LEAVING OWNERS SOMETIME STRANDED OR REDUCLED VEHILCE FUNCTIONALTY. TESLAS RESPNOSE HAS BEEN TO REPLACE THE FAULTY SYSTEM WITH A REFURBISH UNIT THAT WILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE IN THE FUTIURE AND CHARGING THE CUSTOMER BETWEEN 1500-2000 TO REPLACE.
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2015 MODEL S DIRECTLY FROM TESLA. UPON RECEIVING THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED THAT THE MUSIC PLAYER REPEATS SONGS EVEN THOUGH IT IS SET TO PLAY A PLAYLIST, THE LTE CONNECTION IS VERY WEAK REGARDLESS OF LOCATION, I COULD NOT USE THE TESLA APP TO REMOTELY CONTROL THE CAR, AND VARIOUS ISSUES WITH THE USER INTERFACE REQUIRING A FULL REBOOT OF THE MAIN CLUSTER THIS OCCURS RANDOMLY, SOMETIMES WHEN DRIVING WHILE OTHER TIMES STATIONARY. TESLA HAS ALREADY TROUBLESHOOTED THE ISSUES AND EVEN SENT A SOFTWARE UPDATE YET THE ISSUES REMAIN. *TR
8:15 AM, 6/19/20, I HEAD A SICKENING THWACK FROM THE STREET FROM ABT 300 YDS AWAY. EERILY, BEC SOMETHING VERY LARGE WAS HIT WITH NO SOUND OF SQUEALING BRAKES OR CRIES, I WENT OUT FRONT TO LOOK LEFT WITHOUT SEEING ANYTHING. THEN I LOOKED RIGHT AND SAW A MAN CROUCHED TO THE GROUND BESIDE A CAR. I IOOKED FURTHER RT & SAW THE BACK OF A MAN THROWN FACE-FIRST INTO MY TREES. I DIDN'T IMME REGISTER WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT UNTIL I RECOGNIZED THE BODY AS MY HUSBAND, SCREAMED, & RAN TO HIM. HE WAS SNORING LOUDLY. I WAS AFRAID TO TOUCH HIM, SO I HOVERED OVER HIM CALLING HIS NAME. HE DID NOT RESPOND. I TURNED TO THE STREET, SCREAMING AT PASSERS-BY TO CALL 911. THE CROUCHING MAN SAID HE HAD, BUT I WAS FEARFUL OF HIM & THOUGHT, "HOW DO I KNOW YOU HAVE? WHY ARE YOU SO FAR AWAY? DIDN'T YOU EVEN COME OVER TO CHECK ON HIM?" I KEPT SCREAMING AS DRIVERS STOPPED THEIR CARS AND PEOPLE GATHERED. OUR 19-YR-OLD DAUGHTER CAME RUNNING OUT OF THE HOUSE, FOLLOWED BY OUR 17 AND 15-YR-OLD SONS. AN AMBULANCE CAME AND TOOK MY HUSBAND, REFUSING ME BECAUSE OF COVID. THEN I SPOKE WITH 1 OF 2 POLICE WHILE THE OTHER SPOKE TO THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA. HE SAID THE DRIVER ADMITTED TO BEING ON HIS PHONE AS THE CAR DROVE ITSELF, NEVER SEEING MY HUSBAND AND DRIVING 45 MPH. WHEN HE SAID I COULD LEAVE, I WENT TO THE ER WHERE I WAS IMME TOLD MY HUSBAND HAD SUSTAINED SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE TO BOTH SIDES OF HIS BRAIN AND CATASTROPHIC OTHER INJURIES. A POLICE INVESTIGATOR MET ME AT THE ER. INVESTIGATION OF THE VEHICLE & DOWNLOAD OF THE COMPUTER WERE COMPLETED AT POLICE STATION. I WAS TOLD THE TESLA HAD BEEN IN 1 PRIOR AX, BUT HAD NOT REGISTERED "AN EVENT" ON 6/19. LAWYER PRESENT DID SAY THE CAR WAS IN "AUTOPILOT" & SEV SYSTEMS HAD MALFUNCTIONED: AIRBAG, BRAKING, WARNING SOUND, VEERING AWAY, ETC. I WAS LATER TOLD HE WAS DOA, BUT BROUGHT BACK.10 MOS LATER, HUSBAND IS A NON-COMMUNICATING QUADRIPLEGIC, SEVERE TBI, FEEDING TUBE.
MEDIA CONTROL CENTER TURNS BLACK AND WONT ALLOW ME TO OPERATE THE CAR PROPERLY. VERICHLE HAS DONE THIS ON START UP AND WHILE SITTING AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS/WHILE DRIVING.
THE TOUCHSCREEN MEDIA CONTROL UNIT HAS COMPLETELY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. TESLA SAID IT WAS THE MCU AND THAT I HAD TO DRIVE IT TO THE SARASOTA SERVICE CENTER FOR REPAIRS WHICH IS 2 HOURS DRIVE FROM MY HOME. THE BACK UP CAMERA, TURNING SIGNALS AND THE DASH BOARD WEREN'T WORKING DURING THE DRIVE. *TR
A WEEK AGO THE TOUCHSCREEN FAILED TO COME ON UPON ENTERING THE CAR WHICH CAUSED A LACK OF MANY NAVIGATION AND COMFORT FEATURES. UPON CALLING FOR SERVICE WAS TOLD THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY APPEARED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG AND OFFERED NO EXPLANATION. MY CAR IS DRIVABLE BUT LACKING CERTAIN SAFETY FEATURES SUCH AS TURN SIGNALS. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OF PENDING FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. I HAVE TALKED WITH FELLOW TESLA OWNERS AND THEY ALL HAVE HAD THE SAME FAILURE AT THE SAME TIME MINE OCCURRED. FEEL THIS IS A TESLA PROBLEM THAT SHOULDN'T BE INFLICTED ON MANY OWNERS WITH NO EXPLANATION OFFERED. THE PRICE TO REPLACE WITH "NEW AND IMPROVED" COMPUTER IS $2,500 OR I CAN REPLACE WITH THE SAME MODEL CURRENTLY IN THE VEHICLE FOR A MERE $995. THEY WON'T TELL ME WHY, OR IF, I "NEED" THE NEWER MODEL AND THERE'S NO INDICATION HOW LONG THEY WILL HONOR THE REPLACED $995 MODEL.
NOTICED THAT THE DISPLAY ON MY TESLA MODEL S NOT WORKING AS I PULLED MY CAR OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. TRIED REBOOTING BUT SCREEN DID NOT COME UP. WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER THOUGH IT FELT A LITTLE UNSAFE AS MANY OF THE CONTROLS ARE ON THE DISPLAY. AFTER DIAGNOSIS, TESLA SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THE MCU FOR MY MODEL S HAS FAILED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I PAID ~$2000 FOR A NEW MCU. AFTER READING RECENT ARTICLE ON SIMILAR FAILURES REPORTED BY OTHER TESLA MODEL S OWNERS, DECIDED TO REPORT THIS AS FAILURE OF THE DISPLAY UNIT WHILE DRIVING CAN BE A SAFETY RISK. *TR
ON JUNE 9 AT APPROXIMATELY 10:30PM, THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS OFF, AS SUCH, SO WAS THE DRIVER ASSIST MODE. IN ADDITION, WITHOUT PROMPTING, THE SUNROOF OPENED AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TURNED ON. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT WAS TO REBOOT THE COMPUTER. THE FACT THAT TESLA DENIES THIS IS A PROBLEM IS RIDICULOUS. THERE IS CLEARLY A SOFTWARE ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN RECENTLY INTRODUCED. I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR MORE THAN 5 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM UNTIL NOW. *TR
MCU DEGRADATION. OBTAINED THE CAR IN 2019 AND BY 2020 THE UNIT HAS DEGRADED TO DANGEROUS STATES. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR IN REVERSE THE CAMERA SPLIT INTO TWO IMAGES INVERTED, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO SEE WHILE BACKING UP. ALSO THE SYSTEM NAVIGATION FAILED DURING ONE OF MY TRIPS CAUSING ME TO SOFT RESET IT AT NIGHT WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR SHUT OFF THE HEADLIGHTS IN A DARK AREA WITH NO STREET LAMPS, FORCING ME TO PULL OVER USING THE HAZARDS TO PARK. THE SYSTEM NEVER SHUT OFF THE HEADLIGHTS OR PREVENTING DRIVABILITY WHEN RESETTING IN THE PAST. MENU FUNCTIONS HAVE STARTED TO SHOW UP CRYPTIC AND UNUSEABLE FORCING MORE COMMON RESTARTS WHILE DRIVING. MULTIPLE TRIPS TO TESLA SERVICE CENTERS WILL NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE STAFF IGNORE IT AND SAY ITS NORMAL. THEY KEEP SAYING THE CACHE IS FULL AND ONLY THEY CAN FULLY CLEAR THE CACHE. IN ALL CASES THE VECHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND EACH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT.
THE CENTER CONSOLE DISPLAY OF MY TESLA MODEL S HAS ABRUPTLY STOPPED WORKING. I CAN NO LONGER ACCESS THE MAJORITY OF THE FEATURES OF MY VEHICLE, SUCH AS TURNING ON A/C, ACCESSING GPS, CONTROLLING THE SUNROOF, ADJUSTING VEHICLE SETTINGS, ADJUSTING MY SIDE MIRRORS, DEFOGGING THE WINDSHIELD, ACCESSING THE REARVIEW CAMERA, AND ANY OTHER SETTING THAT IS CONTROLLED BY THE CENTER DISPLAY. THIS HAS MADE DRIVING THE CAR NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. BECAUSE OF THE LOW VISIBILITY OF THE REARVIEW WINDOW, I HEAVILY RELY UPON THE REARVIEW CAMERA. SINCE CENTER CONSOLE DISPLAY WAS OFF AND HENCE NO REARVIEW CAMERA, I ENDED UP DAMAGING MY BUMPER INTO A LOW-PROFILE OBJECT THAT OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE BEEN VISIBLE HAD THE CAMERA BEEN ENABLED. I ONLY DROVE MY VEHICLE ONCE AND DAMAGED IT ON THE FIRST DRIVE WITH THE CENTER CONSOLE OFF. I CONTACTED TESLA TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED, BUT WAS TOLD I WOULD NEED TO PAY APPROXIMATELY $1,500.00 TO REPLACE THE MCU WITH THE EXACT SAME VERSION. FURTHER, THIS REPLACEMENT WOULD LIKELY TAKE A MONTH TO BE FIXED, RENDERING MY VEHICLE EFFECTIVELY USELESS.
MY 2015 TESLA MODEL S WITH 33,270 MILES HAS A NON WORKING TOUCH SCREEN OR MCU1 THAT CONTROLS THE CAR. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS A BIT ONLINE IT SEEMS ITS A MUCH TOO COMMON PROBLEM AND MORE OF A DEFECTIVE PART OF THE CAR. IT IS VERY HARD FOR THE OPERATOR TO US E THE CAR WITHOUT IT SINCE IT CONTROLS MOST OF THE CAR. REPAIR TIMES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF CAUSING QUITE A BIT FRUSTRATION FOR THE CAR OWNER. AFTER A BIT OF ONLINE RESEARCH, IT TURNED OUT THAT THIS IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS IN TESLA MODEL S'S AND X'S. IF I HAD LET THE PROBLEM PROGRESS, THE LIQUID IN THE SCREEN WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY FLOWED OVER OTHER COMPONENTS BEHIND THE DASH AND STARTED DRIPPING OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE DASH ONTO THE DRIVER'S LEGS OR CARPET. TESLA CHARGES ABOUT $1400 TO REPLACE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SCREEN WITH AN IDENTICAL UNIT THAT MAY DEVELOP THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER ABOUT 4 YEARS SERVICE. I OPTED TO REPLACE THE SCREEN MYSELF FOR ABOUT $300 FOR A NEW OEM SCREEN SOLD BY AN ONLINE ENTREPRENEUR, AND A FEW OF HOURS OF WORK TO DISASSEMBLE THE DASH, REMOVE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER COMPUTER, REPLACE THE SCREEN, AND REASSEMBLE THE DASH. TESLA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. TESLA SPEC'ED A SCREEN THAT DOESN'T ALWAYS HOLD UP TO THE CLIMATE RIGORS OF A CAR INTERIOR. THIS MAY NOT WARRANT A FULL RECALL, BUT TESLA SHOULD OFFER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS COMPONENT, AND PERFORM THE REPAIR AT NO COST THE THE OWNER
FIRST IT STARTED WITH THE BACK UP CAMERA NOT DISPLAYING WHEN I WOULD PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE, SO I HAD TO REBOOT THE SYSTEM. FEW DAYS PASSED THEN IT DID IT AGAIN SO I REBOOT ED THE SYSTEM AGAIN BUT THIS TIME MY ENTIRE SCREEN WENT BLACK AND IT WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON AFTER DAYS OF REBOOTING THE SYSTEM. I TOOK THE CAR INTO TESLA TO CHECK AND THEY SAID MY MCU NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PROBLEM WITH THE MCU GOING OUT IS THAT IT CONTROLS EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE BACK UP CAMERA AND IT ALSO CONTROLS THE A/C AND WHEN THE MCU WENT BAD IT LEFT MY A/C 24/7. IT TOOK A WEEK FOR MY TO GET MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE SO MY CAR HAS THE A/C RUNNING 274/7 FOR A WEEK. IT TOOK ANOTHER 2 WEEKS FOR THE SERVICE CENTER TO GET THE MCU IN STOCK TO REPAIR MY CAR. I AM CURIOUS WHY THE MCU WENT OUT ONLY AFTER A MY WARRANTY ENDS. *TR

MY MCU STOPPED WORKING AND I WAS UNABLE TO USE A LOT OF THE CARS FUNCTIONS. WHEN MY SCREEN WENT DARK I WAS UNABLE TO SEE ANY DISPLAY OF THE REVERSE CAMERA AND WAS UNABLE TO ADJUST SUSPENSION SETTINGS. THIS HAPPENED AS I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH FAMILY MEMBERS WALKING AROUND THE AREA. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TESLA REPAIR FACILITY AND I WAS TOLD THEY WERE ABLE TO GET MY MCU WORKING BUT THE PROBLEM WILL LIKELY RETURN.

DROVE HOME CAREFULLY, FOUND THE ELECTRIFIED GARAGE WHICH SPECIALIZED IN TESLA REPAIRS, IN SEABROOK, NH. THE TESLA WAS FLAT-BED TRANSPORTED TO THEM. THEY REPORTED THAT DURING THE MANY WEEKS THEY HAD IT, THAT THE STEERING BOX HAD TO BE REPLACED. I CONTACTED TESLA CUSTOMER SERVICE OF THE PROBLEM, AND THEY DID NOT RESPOND. AS A RESULT, I CANCELLED A NEW 2020 MODEL S DURING THE SUMMER OF 2020, AND BOUGHT A NEW LEXUS INSTEAD. I WAS TOO UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE ENGINEERING OF THE TESLA, AND THAT THE STEERING BOX SHOULD NOT FAIL IN 7,690 MILES SINCE NEW. I FOUND A SERVICE MESSAGE THAT DISCUSSED A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH THE 5 POWER STEERING MOUNTING BOLTS. THEY CAME TO MY HOME TO REPLACE THEM. I LOOKED UP THE 38 PAGE SERVICE BULLETIN AND FOUND SEVERAL WARNINGS IN IT ABOUT NOT TAKING MORE THAN ONE BOLT OUT AT A TIME. SINCE THEY HAD COME TO MY HOME TO REPLACE THE BOLTS, I THEORIZED PERHAPS THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT FOLLOW THE BULLETIN CONTENT EXACTLY. BULLETIN WARNED THAT IF YOU REMOVE MORE THAN 1 BOLT AT A TIME YOU MUST REPLACE THE STEERING BOX. SEE BULLETIN SB-18-32-002 R1 (AND REVISION 2 AND REV. 3) . TESLA MODEL S HAD BEEN SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR 2 YEARS, SUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION I HAD. AT NEAR THE END OF 2 YEARS I WALKED DOWN TO EXAMINE THE CAR, NOTICED THE CAR HAD SETTLED DOWN ONTO THE TIRES. I HAD IT CHARGING CONTINUOUSLY, BUT APPARENTLY THE CHARGING OPERATION HAD FAULTED, AND THE CAR WAS DEAD. I CHARGED THE 12V COMPUTER BATTERY, THEN CHARGED THE 400 VOLT TRACTION BATTERY. I TURNED IT ON BUT COULD NOT MOVE FAR BECAUSE THERE WAS SOME INTERFERENCE BETWEEN TIRES AND INSIDE THE FENDERS, WHEN I WOULD HIT A BUMP. I WAITED FOR THE AIR SUSPENSION TO BE PUMPED UP, AND DROVE THE CAR TO HEAD FOR A TESLA SUPERCHARGER STATION. THE TRIP THERE FELT SQUIRRELY AND ASSUMED IT WAS MY STUDDED SNOW TIRES. AT THE SUPERCHARGER THE STEERING GOT VERY DIFFICULT, AND WHEN I LEFT I HAQD TO DRIVE CAREFULLY TO FEEL COMFORTABLE TO MY HOME. I RESEARCHED ONLINE, FOUND THE ELECTRIFIED GARAGE IN SEABROOK, NH AND SET UP A SERVICE APPOINTMENT. THEY DISCOVERED I NEEDED REPLACEMENT REAR AIR SHOCKS AND A NEW STEERING BOX. THEY EXPLAINED THAT BECAUSE THE SHOCKS WERE NOT MOVING FOR 2 YEARS, THEY DEVELOPED A CORROSION BETWEEN DISSIMILAR METALS (STEEL AND ALUMINUM) ON THE SHOCKS. THAT RESULTED IN CORROSION ON THE STEEL, AND CORROSION ON THE ALUMINUM, ALLOWING LARGE O-RINGS TO EXPAND AND LEAK AIR. THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THEY ONLY SEE THAT WITH TESLAS THAT SIT UNUSED FOR A TIME. I EMAILED TESLA NOTIFYING THEM, BUT THEY NEVER RESPONDED, PERHAPS BECAUSE BY THEN I WAS 14 MONTHS BEYOND MY WARRANTY. I WILL PUT IN A DIFFERENT COMPLAINT FOR THE FAILED STEERING BOX. MILEAGE AT INCIDENT WAS 7,690. THE CORROSION AND RUST COULD HAVE BEEN DEFEATED WITH APPROPRIATE ENGINEERING, SUCH AS A PLASTIC SHIELD BETWEEN STEEL AND ALUMINUM.

THE 12V BATTERY ON OUR 2015 TESLA MODEL S STARTED FAILING LAST NOVEMBER. WE WERE ASSURED THAT TESLA THAT IT WOULD BE SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL THEY COULD REPLACE THE BATTERY (WHICH TOOK ABOUT 2 MONTHS). WE'VE COME TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS FAR FROM ACCURATE. AFTER THAT, OUR MCU (THE MAIN COMPUTER IN THE CAR) FAILED. THIS IS APPARENTLY A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM THAT TESLA REFUSES TO FIX. SCREEN NOW HAS NOTICEABLE FLICKER 6. CAR NOW HAS CHARGING PROBLEMS. THE ISSUES WITH THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS, FOG LIGHTS, AND GLOVE BOX WERE ABLE TO FIXED BY A DIFFERENT SERVICE CENTER THE SAME DAY (ALTHOUGH I HAD TO DRIVE APPROX. 30 MILES TO GET TO A DIFFERENT SERVICE CENTER). THE LOGGING ISSUE TOOK ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO TO FIX. THE SCREEN FLICKER AND CHARGING ISSUES WHERE THE CAR RANDOMLY SWITCHES TO A DIFFERENT CHARGING LEVEL WHILE DRIVING OR CHARGING WITHOUT ANY ERROR MESSAGES, IS ON-GOING. I'VE BEEN BACK TO TESLA OVER A DOZEN TIMES, AND THEY IKE TO CHARGE $100 EVERY VISIT "UNDER WARRANTY."

TESLA DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAILED RIGHT FRONT FORE LINK ON MONDAY, JUNE 1ST, AND FIXED THE VEHICLE ON THE SAME DAY--(REPLACING BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT FORE LINKS). I WAS CHARGED $323.75 FOR LABOR, BUT DID NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE FORE LINK PARTS (2 X $205 = $410). FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL LINER WAS NOT REPLACED AS PART OF THIS REPAIR. I CALLED TESLA CLARKSTON ABOUT THIS WHEN I NOTICED IT AND SCHEDULED A ROAD SERVICE REPAIR FOR JUNE 15TH. I WAS CHARGED AN ADDITIONAL $167.00 (PARTS, LABOR, AND $4.50 TAX) FOR THAT SERVICE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 TESLA MODEL S. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE CENTRAL COMPUTER FAILED TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM, AUTO-PILOT, REAR BACK-UP CAMERA, AND SEVERAL OTHER UNDISCLOSED ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS WERE INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TESLA (140 UNIVERSITY TOWN CENTER DR #138, SARASOTA, FL 34243, (941) 866-6597) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND A CASE WAS FILED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,400. *LN*JB*DT*JB
I SUBMIT THIS AS ADDITIONAL DATA FOR NHTSA INQUIRY PE-20-010, TESLA MOTORS. THE CENTRAL SCREEN AND PROCESSOR THAT RUN MOST OF THE NON-DRIVING ELECTRICS IN THE CAR DIED. THE REAR CAMERA STOPPED WORKING. THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS STUCK ON THE SAME SETTING AND WOULD NOT GO OFF. I NEEDED TO KEEP THE CAR PLUGGED IN FOR 7 DAYS UNTIL IT WAS FIXED SINCE THE CLIMATE CONTROL WOULD DRAINING THE BATTERY. SOUNDS ASSOCIATED BLINKERS DIDN'T WORK. ODDLY, THE ODOMETER ALSO STOPPED LOGGING MILES. SINCE MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY I HAD TO PAY $1886 TO HAVE IT REPLACED DURING COVID. TESLA SERVICE CENTER WAS VERY HELPFUL, BUT IF THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, TESLA SHOULD BE FIXING THIS FREE OF CHARGE. THE CAR WAS DRIVABLE AT A BASIC LEVEL BUT IT WAS NOT FULLY FUNCTIONAL. THIS FIRST HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR STARTED ONE MORNING, THE CAR WAS STATIONARY. I HAVE ATTACHED REPAIR INVOICE. *TR
MCU WHICH CONTROLS THE MAJORITY OF THE AUTOMOBILE'S SAFETY AND SECURITY FUNCTIONS FAILED. I DID NOT FEEL THAT THE AUTOMOBILE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL THE FAILED COMPONENT WAS FIXED SO IT SAT IN MY GARAGE FOR 6 WEEKS, AFTER WHICH TIME IT WAS REPAIRED.
MCU FAILURE WITH LESS THAN 3,400 MILES ON CAR. TESLA CLAIMED IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE CAR CAN NOT CHARGE OR DO ANYTHING WITHOUT MCU. NO WINDOWS, NO CLIMATE, NO CHARGING, ETC. A SOLID STATE DEVICE LIKE THE MEMORY SHOULD NOT FAIL. IT IS BEING OVERWRITTEN TWO OFTEN AND TESLA SHOULD HAVE SPEC OUT BETTER MEMORY. FURTHER THE UNIT FAILED WITH VERY LOW MILES AND USAGE. I TRIED TO FIND THE INVOICE BUT IT SEEMS TESLA KEEPS THE INVOICE ON THEIR SERVER. A FAILURE OF MCU BECAUSE OF UNDER SPEC MEMORY SHOULD NOT BE THE CONSUMER ISSUE. TESLA SHOULD REPLACE THE MCU OR MEMORY FOR FREE. I AM VERY UPSET THE WAY THIS WAS HANDLED. FURTHERMORE I WAS TOLD I WOULD BE GETTING A NEW MCU WITH UPGRADED MEMORY BUT NOW I HAVE DOUBTS AFTER READING TESLAMOTORFORUM.COM THAT I WILL HAVE ANOTHER FAILURE IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE MCU CONTROLS MORE THAN ENTERTAINMENT BUT MANY CAR FUNCTIONS NECESSARY TO DRIVE. *TR
