TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH ON CRUISE CONTROL THE VEHICLE CONTINUED BRAKING ON ITS OWN. THE CONTACT DEACTIVATED THE CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO ENGAGE ON THEIR OWN. WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS TURNED OFF, THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD AND ALMOST HIT A ANOTHER VEHICLE. TWO WEEKS AGO THE CONTACT SURGED FORWARD WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND SUGGESTED THAT IT WAS THE COMPUTER IN THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE COMPUTER DID NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HER STEERING WHEEL BECAME STIFF SEVERAL TIMES AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH HER POWER STEERING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42800.
ON 2/10/2010 I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON HEADED TO WORK. I MADE A COMPLETE STOP AT A STOP SIGN AND PROCEEDED TO TURN RIGHT DOING ABOUT 5 MPH.ONCE I TURNED THE CORNER MY CAR ACCELERATED AND WENT UP ON THE CURB AND HIT A FIRE HYDRANT. I WAS THE ONLY PERSON OCCUPYING THE VEHICLE AND I WAS NOT HURT.I HAVE SINCE THEN HAD THE RECALLS FIXED ON MY CAR BY THE DEALER, BUT THEY FAILED TO TELL ME IF MY ACCELARATOR PEDAL WAS DEFECTED!
WHEN SLOWING MY 2006 AVALON FOR TURN, SPEED BUMP, ETC. AND THEN ACCELERATING THERE IS OFTEN A LAG IN THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGING AND WHEN IT DOES THE CAR LURCHES. I HAVE COMPLAINED MANY TIMES TO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS ABOUT THIS SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. AFTER A YEAR OR SO 1 DEALER SAID THAT TOYOTA HAD ISSUED AN ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE WHICH THEY PERFORMED. THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR A WHILE BUT HAS RETURNED. IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT RECALLS AND STORIES ABOUT POSSIBLE ELECTRONIC PROBLEMS WITH THESE CARS I WANTED TO ADD MY STORY TO THE LIST. I CONSIDER THIS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE LAG IN TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WHEN MAKING A LEFT TURN, ESPECIALLY IF IT WORSENS. FURTHER, THE ONLY WAY I KNOW ABOUT THIS LATEST RECALL IS THROUGH THE NEWS - TOYOTA HAS NOT NOTIFIED ME DIRECTLY. THIS MAKES THE THIRD RECALL ON THIS CAR - FLOOR MATS, VVT-I OIL HOSE AND NOW ACCELERATOR! NEEDLES TO SAY - I AM NOT HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE AND WILL SERIOUSLY TRY TO CONVINCE MY WIFE TO TAKE OUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE IN THE FUTURE! *CN *TR
THE VEHICLE DOES NOT WANT TO STOP. WHILE DRIVING 1 BLOCK FROM AN OFFICE TO AN INTERSECTION AT A SPEED OF LESS THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR I HAD TO PLACE BOTH FEET ON BRAKE PEDAL AND MASH THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR TO STOP THE VEHICLE AT A STOP LIGHT. MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE IS 23,000 AND I HAVE TOLD TOYOTA THIS WAS OCCURRING SINCE I OWNED THE VEHICLE. I HAVE CONSISTENTLY HAD TOYOTA CHECK FOR PROBLEMS AND NONE ARE FOUND. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT ONCE EVERY THREE MONTHS. THE CAR IS AN AUTOMATIC AND THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE. IF YOU WERE DRIVING A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE AND WERE ON A HILL TRYING TO MAINTAIN YOUR POSITION YOU WOULD BE ENGAGING THE CLUTCH AND THE GAS PEDALS, ONE WOULD BE FIGHTING THE OTHER. THAT IS WHAT THIS FEELS LIKE, THE BRAKE FIGHTS THE GAS PEDAL. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED. ON 2 OCCASIONS, WHILE IN CRUISE CONTROL, I ATTEMPTED TO UPTICK THE STALK TO INCREASE SPEED ONE MPH. THE CAR ACCELERATED RAPIDLY WELL OVER ONE MPH WHEREUPON I CANCELED CRUISE CONTROL AND EVERYTHING BECAME NORMAL. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME IN MY GRANDMOTHER'S 2006 TOYOTA AVALON AT 5:00 A.M. ON JAN. 23, 2010 ON SOUTH LAMAR IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT-HAND TURN ON TO BARTON SKYWAY, I RELEASED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR, THE ACCELERATOR GOT STUCK, AND MY VEHICLE SPED UP WHICH CAUSED ME TO CRASH INTO A TRAFFIC LIGHT POLE. I SUFFERED A FRACTURED HUMERUS AND BROKEN NOSE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT HAD TO PLACE BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHO INFORMED HIM TO CALL AAA. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FLOOR MAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FLOOR MATS WERE NOT POSITIONED TO DO SO. THE CONTACT IS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000. UPDATED 2/17/10 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS REPAIRED 4 TIMES. UPDATED 02/22/10
PROBLEMS WITH 20006 TOYOTA AVALON: ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, THE CAR HAS ACCELERATED SPONTANEOUSLY AND THE BRAKES HAVE NOT STOPPED THE CAR WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. LUCKILY, NO ACCIDENTS YET. RECENT PROBLEMS WITH ENGINE MALFUNCTION AND VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL MALFUNCTION. TOYOTA DEALER DENIED ANY PROBLEMS, EXCEPT FOR "SPARK PLUGS" AND OIL LINE DEFECT. DEALER DENIED CAR WAS ON RECALL LIST. COMPLAINED THAT I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT THE MAT, GAS PEDAL OR OTHER RECALL. DEALER DENIED THAT CAR WAS ON RECALL LIST. DEALER CHARGED $1,100.00 (4 TIRES INCLUDED) FOR WORK . ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE CAR WAS PURCHASED: GAS CAP IS DIFFICULT TO REPLACE AFTER FILL-UP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON IF CAP IS NOT "CLICKED" SEVERAL TIMES. CAR MUST BE TAKEN TO DEALER TO BE TURNED OFF. IT WILL NOT GO OFF EVEN IF GAS CAP IS ON PROPERLY. DEALER CHARGED $135.00 FOR EACH TIME. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION POSES SAFETY PROBLEMS BECAUSE IT IS VERY UNEVEN AND UNPREDICTABLE, SHIFTING WHEN YOU DON'T EXPECT SHIFTING, AT LOWER AND HIGHER SPEEDS AND IN CRUISE CONTROL. *TR
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2006 AVALON XLS. THE STEERING COLUMN WILL SUDDENLY COLLAPSE. *TR
MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON HAS BEEN GIVING ME PROBLEMS WITH THE FLOOR MATS AND ACCELERATOR GETTING STUCK FOR OVER TWO YEARS AND NOW THE ACCELERATOR GETS STUCK ON ITS OWN. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT BACK AND FORTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND HOPE THAT TOYOTA WOULD REPLACE IT WITH A RENTAL CAR UNTIL IT CAN FIX IT. *TR

2006 TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED - TELESCOPIC STEERING COLUMN COLLAPSES UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. *TR
THIS ADMINISTRATION SHOULD DEMAND THAT TOYOTA FIX THE PEDAL ISSUE IMMEDIATELY. CURRENT OWNERS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME FIX AS ALL NEW MODELS WITH RESPECT TO THIS PEDAL ISSUE. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS PEDAL ISSUE ABOUT 2-3 YEARS AGO. I WAS TOLD AT THAT TIME BY THE TECHNICIAN THAT IT WAS A FUEL ENERGY SAVING DEVICE. HE MADE IT SOUND THAT MY CAR WAS SAFE. THEREFORE, I THINK TOYOTA'S RECORDS ARE FLAWED AS TO THE EXACT NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS CONSUMERS (CURRENT OWNERS) HAVE MADE TO SERVICE DEPARTMENTS. IN ADDITION I PURCHASED AN ADDITIONAL 7 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH MY CAR THROUGH A TOYOTA DEALER. TOYOTA SHOULD BE MANDATED BY US GOV TO FIX THE ISSUE FOR ALL CURRENT OWNERS, REGARDLESS IF CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY. A TOTAL REPLACEMENT IS NECESSARY IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE ALWAYS SUSPECTED THAT THE PEDAL WAS NOT SAFE. I HAD MANY CONCERNS ABOUT SOMEONE HITTING ME IN THE BACK END OR ME HITTING SOMEONE ELSE ON MY FRONT END. TOYOTA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS ISSUE TOO LONG AND THEY SHOULD IMMEDIATELY FIX IT!! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 3 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN SPINNING AROUND. WHEN THE DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES, IT ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO THE FENCE. THE DEALER REPAIRED THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE DEALER TOLD THEM THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIX THE VEHICLE A SECOND TIME WHEN THE FAILURE RECURRED SINCE THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO TRADE THE VEHICLE IN FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE BY PAYING $1,600 ON THE LEASE OF THE FAILED VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS EXPECTING TOYOTA TO REFUND THEM THE $1600. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 300 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
THE TELESCOPING STEERING COLUMN LOCK LOOSENS DURING NORMAL DRIVING. USUALLY THE LOCK LEVER ONLY DROPS LOW ENOUGH TO HIT YOUR KNEES AS YOU EXIT THE CAR AFTER A DRIVE, BUT DOES NOT LOOSEN ENOUGH TO RELEASE THE COLUMN TELESCOPE. TODAY IT DROPPED ALL THE WAY DOWN WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THE COLUMN (WHICH I HAVE FULLY EXTENDED NORMALLY) COLLAPSED FORWARD (COMPRESSED). I LOST SOME VEHICLE CONTROL AS I REACHED DOWN TO SECURE THE HANDLE UPWARD. THIS SEEMS TO BE A FRICTION DEVICE AND HAS NO POSITIVE LOCKING DETENT. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER HAVE MORE TROUBLE WITH IT THAN I DO AS THEY CANNOT FORCE IT UP AS FAR, SO IT RELEASES MORE OFTEN. A POOR AND DANGEROUS DESIGN. THE DEALER WANTS $79 JUST TO LOOK AT IT. WE HAVE GOTTEN INTO THE HABIT OF CHECKING THE LOCK FREQUENTLY BUT WHENEVER WE FORGET IT WILL RELEASE THE TELESCOPE AND COLLAPSE THE WHEEL UNEXPECTEDLY AFTER ABOUT 2 HOURS OF HIGHWAY DRIVING. WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. IT IS HAPPENING ABOUT ONCE A WEEK NOW IF WE FORGET TO CHECK IT. MY WIFE IS 65 AND DOES NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO TIGHTEN IT FULLY NOW. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT APPROXIMATELY 80 MPH WHEN SHE NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONSIVE WHEN APPLIED. THE VEHICLE DID NOT BEGIN TO SLOW DOWN UNTIL THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DISENGAGED. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE DEALER OF THE FAILURE BUT THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 58,800.
I TOOK MY 2006 AVALON IN TO NALLEY TOYOTA FOR AN OIL LINE RECALL. I ASKED THEM IF THEY COULD ALSO LOOK INTO THE FLOOR MAT RECALL FOR ME. THEY TOLD ME NO DECISION HAD YET BEEN MADE ON THE FLOOR MAT ISSUE BUT WENT AHEAD WITH THE OIL LINE RECALL. I PICKED MY CAR UP THAT AFTERNOON, DROVE 15 MINUTES TO MY MOTHER'S APARTMENT. WHILE SLOWLY GUIDING MY WAY INTO A PARKING PLACE, MY CAR ACCELERATED VIOLENTLY PROPELLING ITSELF UP OVER A CURB AND THROUGH A WOODEN FENCE, LANDING WITH MY BACK TIRES ON THE FRONT CURB OF THE PARKING PLACE. MY BRAKING HAD NO EFFECT AND UPON LANDING ON THE DOWNSIDE OF THE SLOPE, MY ENGINE DIED. I CALLED TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY ASKING WHAT THEY COULD HAVE DONE TO CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN SINCE MY CAR HAD NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN BEFORE IN THE 4 YEARS I HAD IT, AND YET HAPPENED 15 MINUTES AFTER THEY HAD WORKED ON IT. THEY SAID NOTHING WAS DONE THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS. WE COMPLAINED TO THE AREA TOYOTA REP AND AN INSPECTOR CAME AND LOOK AT THE CAR AT THE NALLEY REPAIR SHOP WE HAD IT TOWED TO. TOYOTA SAYS MY CAR CHECKS OUT FINE AND ANY PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE FLOOR MATS /DRIVER. THE SERVICEMAN DID NOT ADVISE ME TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MATS THAT WERE IN PLACE WHEN THEY WERE WORKING ON THE CAR. THEY RELEASED IT TO ME WITH THE FLOOR MATS IN PLACE. FURTHERMORE, I CONTEND THAT THE FIRST THING I CHECK AFTER THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION WAS THE LOCATION OF THE FLOOR MAT,WHICH WAS FLAT AGAINST THE FLOOR. *TR
I WAS ACCELERATING WHEN I WAS CHANGING LANES. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE HARD ON ITS OWN FOR ABOUT ONE HALF OF A SECOND. THE GAS PEDAL DID NOT STICK ON THE CARPET. I DO HAVE THE CORRECT CARPET AND IT WAS PROPERLY INSTALLED IN PLACE. *TR
2006 TOYOTA AVALON. HINGES ON BAR IN TRUNK THAT HOLDS THE TRUNK OPEN BROKE OFF IN NOVEMBER 2009 (RIGHT AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED). IF YOU DON'T HOLD THE TRUNK OPEN WITH ONE HAND IT CAN SLAM DOWN ON YOU. ALREADY HAVE HAD IT SLAM DOWN ON MY HEAD, ARM AND SON'S ARM. VERY PAINFUL, NICE BIG BRUISES AND MILD CONCUSSION. TOOK IT TO TOYOTA AND THEY WERE NOT VERY HELPFUL AT THE END 2009 AND THEN AGAIN IN AUGUST 2010 AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY AT LEAST $500.00 TO GET IT FIXED. I ONLY USE THE TRUNK NOW IF I HAVE SOMEONE ELSE WITH ME AS IT IS HARD TO HOLD OPEN WITH ONE HAND WHILE LOADING AND UNLOADING GROCERIES. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT INTENTION. CONSEQUENTLY SHE CRASHED INTO CEMENT AND A FENCE INSIDE OF A PARKING LOT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP. SHE WAS ADVISED BY THE MANUFACTURER TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MATS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 12,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON XLS. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN MADE A CLUNKING NOISE. THE DEALER OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE WHEN CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 27,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 17,000. I HAVE BEGUN TO NOTICE A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL AT LOW SPEEDS, GOING FORWARD OR IN REVERSE. I AM NOW READING ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER AVALON 2006 OWNERS. THE CAR HAS 35,000 MILES ON IT AND THIS STARTED SHOWING UP AT AROUND 30K. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BRAKE PADS KNOCKING, BUT I'M ALMOST CERTAIN IT IS THE STEERING SHAFT FROM WHAT OTHERS ARE DESCRIBING. IT GOES IN THE SHOP TOMORROW FOR THE VVT OIL RECALL FIX AND I WILL DISCUSS THIS UNACCEPTABLE AND PERHAPS DANGEROUS CONDITION WITH THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT. *TR
I WAS TURNING LEFT AT ABOUT 20 M.P.H. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE WITH THE GAS PEDAL ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE BUT VERY, VERY, SLOWLY. *TR
WHILE TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A LETTER REGARDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN #09V388000, I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM WITH CONTINUOUS ACCELERATION IS CAUSED NOT BY THE CARPET (WHICH IS A LUDICROUS STORY) BUT BY THE FAULTY CONTROL MECHANISM (PERHAPS, COMPUTER CHIPS) USED IN THE CRUISE CONTROL. MY 2006 AVALON HAS A LASER-GUIDED CRUISE CONTROL WHICH AUTOMATICALLY SLOWS DOWN MY VEHICLE WHEN IT APPROACHES TOO CLOSE TO THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF IT. AFTER A SAFE DISTANCE IS ATTAINED, IT THEN ACCELERATES TO KEEP UP WITH THE VEHICLE AHEAD. I HAVE NOTICED THAT SOMETIMES IN SO DOING, THE VEHICLE SURGES AS IF I WERE FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL. IT IS SCARY WHEN IT LUNGES FORWARD WITH SUCH A FORCE. I AM NO LONGER USING THE CRUISE CONTROL FOR THIS REASON. I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN CERTAIN CRUISE CONTROL DEFECT. CARPET HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SMOKE SCREEN. PLEASE INVESTIGATE VIGOROUSLY. *TR
THIS EVENT OCCURRED TWICE DURING ROUTINE DRIVING. MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON SEEMED TO HAVE SOME DIFFICULTY STRAIGHTENING THE STEERING WHEEL OUT AFTER A TURN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. IN NOVEMBER 2009 WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH ON A HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON JANUARY 16, 2010. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,500. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 47,262. *CN UPDATED 02/17/10

THE CONTACT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AS A RESULT OF THE CRASH. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 25,000.

THE TRANSMISSION HESITATES, JUMPS, AND BUCKS AND ACCELERATION IS VERY UNEVEN. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM 0 MPH (I.E. AT A RED LIGHT), THE CAR HESITATES, AND THEN AT APPROX. 20 MPH, WHILE KEEPING THE GAS PEDAL STEADY, THE RPM'S REV UP, AND THE CAR ACCELERATES WILDLY. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS AT AROUND 20 MPH, IT FEELS LIKE IT SHIFTS INTO A GEAR ABOVE WHAT IT SHOULD BE. THE CAR ALWAYS FEELS LIKE IT IS IN THE WRONG GEAR. ALL THE OIL DRAINED FROM THE ENGINE AS A RESULT, CREATING AN ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD. THE TOYOTA DEALER THAT REPAIRED THE LINE MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS A BULLETIN FROM TOYOTA ALERTING DEALERS TO THE PROBLEM BUT IT IS NOT A RECALL. A REVIEW OF EDMUNDS AND OTHER WEBSITES SHOWS A LONG LIST OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SPECIFIC ENGINE FAILURE. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON AND HAVE HAD THE ACCELERATOR GET STUCK FOUR TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. EACH TIME WAS WHEN I WAS PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR DOWN HARD TO GAIN SPEED. THREE TIMES I WAS FORCED TO PUT BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD TO SLOW THE ACCELERATION AND LUCKILY I WAS IN OPEN STRETCHES WHERE I DIDN'T HAVE INTERSECTIONS OR ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO CONTEND WITH. THE FOURTH TIME WAS JUST RECENTLY, AFTER I HAD HEARD ABOUT THE RECALL AND AFTER I HAD VERIFIED THE FLOOR MATS WERE SECURED PROPERLY. I ACTUALLY REACHED DOWN WITH MY RIGHT HAND AND UNSTUCK THE ACCELERATOR. THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT IN CONTACT WITH THE ACCELERATOR AT ALL. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION. WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED, IT HAS BEEN TERRIFYING AND I AM LUCKY IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON A BUSY STREET. I LITERALLY HAD TO PUT THE FULL FORCE OF BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED FOUR TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED FOR THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,000.
I WAS TRAVELING ON THE NY I-87 IN MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES WHEN THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WITHIN A MINUTE OR SO, THE "CHECK OIL" LIGHT STARTED BLINKING SLOWLY AT FIRST, THEN AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS IT WAS ON CONTINUOUSLY. BY THIS TIME I HAD PULLED OFF INTO A GAS STATION. AS I WAS PULLING INTO THE STATION THE ENGINE WAS MAKING A LOUD CLICKING NOISE. AFTER IT WAS PARKED, I CHECKED THE DIPSTICK AND THERE WAS NO OIL REMAINING IN THE ENGINE. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR, INCLUDING INSIDE OF WHEELS AND BRAKES WAS COMPLETELY COATED WITH OIL AS WELL AS THE BACK OF THE TRUNK. PRESUMABLY FROM THE SPRAY UNDERNEATH WHILE TRAVELING @ 65-70MPH. I THEN PURCHASED 3 QUARTS OF OIL, PUT IT IN THE ENGINE AND IT DRAINED ONTO THE GROUND. THE MECHANIC STATED THERE IS A PIN HOLE IN THE RUBBER SECTION OF THE OIL LINE. THE USE OF A RUBBER HOSE FOR A PRESSURIZED FLAMMABLE LIQUID SYSTEM IN THIS LOCATION IS ABSOLUTELY RECKLESS. AT A MINIMUM, IT SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF ARMORED OR SHIELDED HOSE. I'M AMAZED THE CAR DIDN'T START ON FIRE FROM BEING DOUSED WITH FIVE QUARTS OF OIL LEAKING FROM THE RUPTURED HOSE. THE SERVICE PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2006 AVALONS AND HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ISSUED. I CALLED BACK THE EVENING AND WAS TOLD NOW THEY CALLED TOYOTA AS THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG BUT HAVE NOT HEARD FROM TOYOTA SO I WONT GET MY CAR UP UNTIL AFTER LABOR DAY WEEKEND- (HAD TO GET A RENTAL FOR A WEEK) NEXT WEEK, THEY TOLD BE THE GEAR SHAFT CRACKED AND GASKETS NEED REPLACEMENT AND A 16 HRS JOB AND WOULD COST APPROX $6000 TO REPAIR "BUT TOYOTA WILL COVER 50%" EVEN THOUGH I AM OUT OF 60,000 MILES WARRANTY. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THIS IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2009, HE STATED THAT THERE WAS A RETURN FUEL LINE IN THE FUEL PUMP AND WAS AT RISK OF CAUSING A FIRE IF THE LINE WERE TO BREAK. HE ALSO OBSERVED THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK ON THE FLOOR AND CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS NO OIL ON THE DIPSTICK AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF OIL LEAKED ONTO THE EXHAUST PIPE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD REPAIR THE VEHICLE PER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE PART NECESSARY TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE IS ON BACK ORDER. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY RISK AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT A FIRE COULD HAVE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 77000.
EXPERIENCED A LEAK IN THE "VVTI" OIL LINE TO THE REAR CYLINDER BANK IN THIS TRANSVERSE MOUNTED V6 ENGINE AT 78,000 MILES. FORTUNATELY, THIS WAS DISCOVERED BEFORE ENGINE FAILURE OR DAMAGE TO SURROUNDING EQUIPMENT OCCURRED. SEARCHING ONLINE, HAVE FOUND OTHERS WERE NOT SO FORTUNATE. THIS PROBLEM IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE IT COULD LEAD TO SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE AS WELL AS THE POTENTIAL FOR ENGINE FIRE AS OIL LEAKS ON HOT PARTS. THE REPAIR COST WAS $202 FOR LABOR. TOYOTA PAID FOR PARTS NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR AS PART OF A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RESPONSE AFTER A COMPLAINT WAS MADE. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL TO REPLACE THIS PART, AS MY RESEARCH ONLINE REVEALS IT TO BE OCCURRING TO MANY PEOPLE WHEN THEIR CARS ARE OVER 70,000 MILES AND THEREFORE OUT OF THE NORMAL WARRANTY PERIOD.
