CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO A RECALL ON HIS 2006 TOYOTA AVALON *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL, BUT WHEN HE CONTACTED THE DEALER TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT, HE WAS INFORMED THE NEXT AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT WASN'T UNTIL MAY. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING BETWEEN 50-55 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHAKE ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE IGNITION COILS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,208 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81,763.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE DRIVER WAS DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED WHEN THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD, RESULTING IN A CRASH. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE DRIVER WAS REPORTED INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 78,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE BRAKE TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN AND THE VEHICLE SURGED. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED SO FORCEFULLY THAT THE CONTACT HAD TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND IT COASTED TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS IMPOSSIBLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,609.
POWER STEERING PUMP LEAKING. TOLD BY DEALER IT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
THIS CARS ENGINE HAD TO BE PULLED OUT FOR HEAD GASKETS. I WAS CHARGED 4000.00 WHEN IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. A YEAR LATER THEY GAVE ME THE MONEY BACK. THEN I HAD EXTERNAL HIGH PRESSURE OIL LINES REPLACED AND THE GASKETS SEVERAL TIMES. THIS CAR IS ONE OF THE WORST CARS I HAVE EVER OWNED.I TAKE CARE OF MY CARS TO THE EXSTREME.I AM A DIESEL SPECIALIST FOR THE STATE.I FINALLY HAD TO GET RID OF THE CAR.I WROTE TOYOTA A LETTER AND GOT ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPATHY OR UNDERSTANDING WHATSOEVER. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE. THE SECOND TIME, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED THROUGH A STOP SIGN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIANS STATED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED SHE DID NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AFTER REPAIRS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000.
TELESCOPING STEERING WHEEL COLLAPSES WHILE DRIVING CREATING HAZARDOUS CONDITION. FRICTION RELEASE DOESN'T STAY LOCKED, AND DRIVER MUST CHECK IT REGULARLY WHILE DRIVING. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. AS SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL GEAR THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL IT CRASHED INTO THE MEDIAN. SHE WAS INJURED BUT DID NOT GO TO THE HOSPITAL. THE POLICE WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED PREVIOUSLY PRIOR TO THE CRASH AND WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALER WHO REMOVED THE FLOOR MATS BUT DID NOT REINSTALL A NEW SET. THE DAMAGE WAS TO THE LEFT FRONT STEERING AREA. THE REPAIR COST WAS $3,000. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND A REPRESENTATIVE INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND NO MANUFACTURING DEFECTS WITHIN THE VEHICLE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY ASSUMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,300 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,645.
MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON XLS EXHIBITS LOUD KNOCKING NOISE WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL AT LOW SPEEDS. DEALER SAID THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 AVALON AND CAN BE FIXED BY REPLACING THE STEERING COLUMN AT A COST OF $911. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL TO FIX SINCE THEY KNEW ABOUT IT SINCE 2004 AND HAVE ISSUED VARIOUS SERVICE BULLETINS ON SUBJECT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: ACCELERATOR PEDAL) AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. AFTER RECEIVING THE VEHICLE BACK FROM THE DEALER, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THEY HAD IN FACT REPAIRED THE RECALLED COMPONENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
THE DASHBOARD HAS BECOME VERY SHINY, STICKY, AND CRACKED DUE TO HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY LIVING IN THE SOUTHEAST US. WHEN THE SUN HITS THE DASHBOARD, IT CREATES A REFLECTION THAT BLOCKS THE VIEW OF THE DRIVER. THAT IS MY CONCERN FOR SAFETY. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND MILLIONS OF OTHER OWNERS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS SAME ISSUE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO STICK BY THEIR CLAIM TO CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS AND REMEDY THIS ISSUE.
MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON STEERING WHEEL WAS GETTING STUCK WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON. I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE TO TRY AND TURN THE WHEEL IN ORDER FOR IT TO RELEASE. ADDITIONALLY THE CAR WAS LEAKING FLUID. ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2010 I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHO IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS "STEERING RACK LEAKING FROM RIGHT SIDE CAUSING SUBFRAME TO BE WET WITH POWER STEERING FLUID. REPLACE THE STEERING RACK AND ALIGN". SO AT A COST OF $1338.85 THE STEERING RACK WAS REPLACED. I AGREE THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL TO FIX SINCE THEY KNEW ABOUT IT SINCE 2004 AND HAVE ISSUED VARIOUS SERVICE BULLETINS ON SUBJECT. ON JANUARY 7, 2012 I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I AM STILL EXPERIENCING AN OIL LEAK THAT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR IN NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE WITH NO RESOLUTION. NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THERE IS A LEAK AT TWO RETURN HOSED IN THE POWER STEERING COLUMN AND ARE CHARGING $500 FOR REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR. SO NOW IN A YEAR AND HALF I HAVE SPENT APPROXIMATELY $2000 TO REPAIR THE STEERING ON A FAIRLY NEW CAR. WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS 2006 AVALON STEERING ISSUE. APPARENTLY TOYOTA HAS NEVER RECTIFIED THE PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING AND CONTINUES TO MAKE MONEY ON SUBSTANDARD, DANGEROUS PRODUCTS. THIS IS THE SEVENTH TOYOTA THAT I HAVE OWNED AND THE ONLY ONE THAT I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH AND RECALLS FOR. YOU WOULD THINK THAT FOR THE COST OF THIS CAR, YOU WOULD GET BETTER QUALITY. I MAY HAVE TO RECONSIDER BUYING TOYOTAS IN THE FUTURE IF THIS IS THE QUALITY OF CAR THEY ARE PRODUCING. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY ISSUE THAT I HAVE HAD TO DATE. I HAVE ALSO GONE ON-LINE AND RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
WE SPOTTED DROPS OF OIL COMING FROM OUR TOYOTA AVALON 2006. A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO BE A SLOW OIL LEAK FROM THE FRONT TIMING COVER. THE DEALERSHIP ESTIMATES IT WILL COST OVER $2,200 TO RESEAL OR REPLACE THE COVER WHICH COSTS ABOUT $50. WE HAVE DECIDED, AS OF NOW, TO NOT SPEND THE MAJOR DOLLARS INVOLVED, AND KEEP A EYE ON THE OIL IN THE CAR. WE HAVE ALSO RESEARCHED THAT PARTICULAR PROBLEM IN THE 2006 AVALON, AND HAVE FOUND NHTSA TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, ITEM NUMBER 10021531, AND 2006 TOYOTA AVALON, SERVICE BULLETIN #: 01907. THE SUMMARY OF THIS BULLETIN READS: "ENGINE OIL LEAK FROM FRONT TIMING COVER." THE BULLETIN SEEMS TO BE DESCRIBING OUR PROBLEM EXACTLY. WHEN A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MONEY INVOLVED WITH THE REPAIR ($2,200) TO THE PART TOYOTA WILL REPLACE ($50), THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE 2006 AVALON'S DESIGN AND/OR THE SITUATION CALLS FOR A TOYOTA RECALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT WAS ACCELERATING 10 MPH FROM A COMPLETE STOP AND TO AN INTERSECTION WHEN THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP OR DECREASE IN SPEED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF A TRUCK. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION, FRACTURED WRIST, FRACTURED TUBULAR AND A LACERATION ON HIS LEFT LEG. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE DEALER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD FILE A COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
DASHBOARD ON THIS VEHICLE CRACKED IN 2010. IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS, SEVERAL PLACES CRACKED AND BECAME STICKY TO THE TOUCH WHERE AIR BAGS DEPLOY. CONCERNED THAT AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WOULD BE A PROBLEM WITH PIECES OF DASHBOARD BEING THROWN. BROUGHT TO DEALERS ATTENTION. ADVISED OUT OF WARRANTY SO NOTHING COULD BE DONE. BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEM - REPLACED THE DASHBOARD AT A PERSONAL COST OF $2000. THIS WAS A DEFECTIVE PART AS SHOWN ON THE THOUSANDS OF OWNERS WHO HAD THE SAME ISSUE. TOYOTA SHOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR COST TO REPLACE THIS SAFETY ISSUE DEFECT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN RECALL 10V499000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: FOUNDATION COMPONENTS: MASTER CYLINDER). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR TWO WEEKS. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 53,000.
FRONT DRIVERS SEAT FRAME WELD BREAKS CAUSING SEAT TO BECOME LOOSE AND GO DOWN INTO FRAME. *TR
ISSUE: AFTER A PERIOD OF APPROXIMATELY 2,000 DRIVEN MILES, THE LOCKING DEVICE ON THE TELESCOPING STEERING COLUMN WILL LOOSEN TO THE POINT WHERE IT BECOMES FULLY DISENGAGED. THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN WITH THE TELESCOPING COLUMN FULLY EXTENDED AND THE DRIVER IS UNAWARE OF WHEN THE LOCKING DEVICE HAS BECOME DISENGAGED. DURING HARD BRAKING SITUATIONS THE DRIVER NATURALLY APPLIES SUPPORT PRESSURE TO THE STEERING COLUMN CAUSING THE DISENGAGED STEERING COLUMN TO FULLY COLLAPSE. THIS SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED COLLAPSE OF THE STEERING COLUMN CAUSES THE DRIVER AN ADDITIONAL CONCERN AND AN EMERGENCY REACTION, UP TO AND POTENTIALLY INCLUDING THE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, TO AN ALREADY HAZARDOUS SITUATION (HARD BRAKING). THE ABOVE INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. REPORTING: THIS INCIDENT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AT EVERY SCHEDULED 5,000 MILE CHECK UP FOR AT LEAST THE LAST 2+ YEARS. THIS ISSUE IS NOT NEW AND AT MY REQUEST THE SERVICE AGENT CONTINUES TO ADD THE ISSUE TO THE SERVICE ORDER. TOYOTA RESPONSE; TOYOTA SERVICE PERSONNEL STATE THAT THEY CAN NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE SINCE THEY CAN NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE. AS WAS STATED ABOVE THE ISSUE OCCURS AFTER APPROXIMATELY 2,000 DRIVEN MILES. HOW TOYOTA EXPECTS TO REPLICATE 2,000 DRIVEN MILES BY DRIVING THE VEHICLE AROUND THE PARKING LOT IS ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE TO ANY REASONABLE PERSON. TWO MONTHS OF DRIVING CAN NOT BE CONDENSED INTO 10 MINUTES. FOR SAFETY ISSUES, ESPECIALLY FOR ONE CONSISTENTLY REPORTED OVER A PERIOD OF YEARS, TO BE DISMISSED AFTER A 10 MINUTE CURSORY INSPECTION OR NONE AT ALL, IS BEYOND WILLFUL NEGLECT AND IS EVIDENT THAT TOYOTA'S SAFETY CULTURE HAS NOT IMPROVED. THE ISSUE WITHIN TOYOTA REMAINS UNREPORTED, UNACKNOWLEDGED AND UNRESOLVED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE AT A STOP SIGN, SHE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL MOTOR WAS REPLACED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT NOTICED ANY FURTHER ISSUES SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,319.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED IN THE ENGINE AND SMOKE BEGAN TO COME FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND THE HIGHWAY PATROL APPEARED ON THE SCENE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED BUT NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INSURANCE COMPANY GARAGE WHERE AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 142,000.
2006 TOYOTA AVALON. CONSUMER STATES UNINTENDED ACCELERATION *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. THE CONSUMER STATED IT HAPPENED AFTER THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED. *JB
IN JULY 2010 I TOOK MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON TO WALDORF TOYOTA FOR THE 60,000 SERVICE AND REPORTED A PROBLEM WITH MY STEERING STICKING WHEN TURNING LEFT. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS RANDOMLY. THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS AN ALIGNMENT NEEDED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WHICH I HAD THEM PERFORM. HOWEVER, AFTER APPROXIMATELY A WEEK AND HALF I EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. I RETURNED THE CAR AGAIN IN EARLY AUGUST 2010 BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED, CONSEQUENTLY THE CAR WAS NOT REPAIRED. FAST FORWARD TO AUGUST 2011, MORE THAN ANOTHER YEAR LATER, I AM STILL EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE SAME EXPLANATION FROM THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED SO THERE HAS NOT BEEN RESOLUTION. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AS WHEN THE STEERING STICKS A VERY QUICK RESPONSE IS NEEDED TO CORRECT THE DIRECTION THAT YOU WOULD LIKE THE VEHICLE GO WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TURN. I NEVER KNOW WHEN I WILL BE SURPRISED WITH THIS UNFORTUNATE SITUATION. I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH TOYOTA AND CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY.
FAILURE OF THE HINGES AND TORSION BARS THAT ARE MOUNTED FOR THE TRUNK LID OF MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON, LIMITED. THE TORSION BAR ROTATES INTO THE TRUNK SPACE ABOUT 5 INCHES AND CAN HIT ITEMS IN THE TRUNK AND DISLODGE THE TORSION BAR AND DAMAGE A WEAK MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS FAILURE IS NOT GRACEFUL BUT IMMEDIATE. UPON OPENING THE TRUNK WITH THE TORSION BAR DISLODGED OR THE BAR BECOMES DISLODGED THE TRUNK CAN COME BACK AND HIT YOU IN THE HEAD OR A CHILD BEING HELD. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND TOYOTA OF THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE 36000/ 3YR WARRANTY WHICH I EXCEEDED. HOWEVER, AFTER SEVERAL MORE CONTACTS I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN BO030-06 ISSUED IN DECEMBER 2006. MY CONCERN IS THAT THERE WAS NEVER ANY WARNING ON LIMITING THE USEFUL SPACE IN THE TRUNK NOR ANY NOTIFICATION OF THE POTENTIAL FAILURE. MY CONCERN IS THAT TOYOTA NEW ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE AND WAS RELUCTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND THAT THERE WAS A POTENTIAL FIX THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT. NO CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS PROVIDED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED IN REVERSE INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE, SPUN AROUND AND CONTINUED INTO A BUILDING DOORWAY. THE CONTACT TRIED TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY FIRMLY DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE STOPPED AFTER REVERSING INTO THE BUILDING. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD REMOVE THE FLOOR MAT AND LOWER THE STEM. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 52,000.
I WAS EXPERIENCE WHAT I BELIEVED TO BE A "STICKY" STEERING WHEEL. I FIRST NOTICED IT IN DECEMBER OF 2009. IN 2010, I WENT TO TOYOTA NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT THIS ISSUE BUT THEY SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T LOOK IN TO IT BECAUSE 1. IT WAS INTERMITTENT AND 2. "LIKE LOOKING FOR A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK". I SAVED THE PAPERWORK OF WHERE I HAD CAME TO THE DEALERSHIP COMPLAINING OF SUCH ISSUE WHICH PROVED TO BE FRUITFUL WHEN TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL ABOUT THE PROBLEM IN JULY. I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY WITH MY PAPERS STATING MY PREVIOUS INQUIRES. STILL THEY WERE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE TOYOTA HAD NOT ISSUED ANY FIXES TO THE DEALERSHIPS. THERE WERE NUMEROUS TIMES I FELT LIKE THE CAR WOULD NOT COME OUT OF A TURN. I HAVE SINCE SOLD MY 2006 TOYOTA AVALON. 1. I WAS AT A STOPLIGHT, FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE, DOING NOTHING BUT WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO CHANGE. SUDDENLY I REALIZED MY CAR WAS MOVING FORWARD, SO I PUSHED THE BRAKES HARDER. THE PEDAL WENT DOWN FURTHER BUT THE CAR KEPT MOVING FORWARD. ALL OF THIS TOOK ONLY A FEW SECONDS. THEN I HEARD AND FELT THE ENGINE ACCELERATING VERY LOUDLY. JUST AT THAT MOMENT THE LIGHT CHANGED, AND TRAFFIC SPED AHEAD. WITHOUT THINKING, I PUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE STOPPED ROARING, THE CAR ACCELERATED NORMALLY AND THE BRAKES WERE RESPONSIVE. 2. THIS WAS THE ONLY INCIDENT. 3. I WAS ACTUALLY ON MY WAY TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, SO I CONTINUED ON MY WAY. WHEN I GOT TO THE DEALER, I HAD THE PERSON WHO MET ME AT MY CAR CHECK THE FLOOR MAT BEFORE I WALKED AWAY. HE SAID IT WAS FINE. TOYOTA PERFORMED ALL RECALL ACTIONS, ASKED IF I WANTED THE COMPUTER RE-PROGRAMMED TO ALLOW THE BRAKES TO OVERRIDE EVERYTHING ELSE (I SAID YES), AND FILLED OUT THE FORMS AND PERFORMED ACTIONS IN ACCORDANCE WITH AN SUA INCIDENT. THEY GAVE ME A LOANER AND THE NEXT DAY TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WOULD BE RELEASED. I ASKED FOR, AND RECEIVED A COPY OF THE FORM FOR AN SUA INCIDENT, BUT IT ONLY HAS INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TECHNICIAN AND NO WRITTEN RESULTS, SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS FOUND AND WHAT WAS DONE, OTHER THAN NORMAL RECALL WORK. I AM FILLING THIS OUT BECAUSE I NO LONGER TRUST TOYOTA, AND NOW I AM AFRAID. IT ONLY HAPPENED ONCE, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM, AND I WANT TO BE PART OF THE RECORD OF INCIDENTS. *TR
HAS ANYONE EVER CONSIDERED THE TOYOTA VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, VSC, SYSTEM AS A SOURCE OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION? A CODE P1578 MEANS BRAKE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION RELATING TO THE CRUISE CONTROL BRAKE SWITCH. IF THE BRAKE SWITCH DEVELOPS AN INTERMITTENT, STEPPING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL NOT CAUSE THE CRUISE TO DISENGAGE. THE DRIVER WILL FIGHT THE CRUISE CONTROL WITH THE BRAKES AND THINK ITS A SUDDEN ACCELERATION. THE TOYOTA VSC SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PROTOCOL FOR THEIR VEHICLE EXAMS AS WELL AS INDEPENDENT FORENSIC EXAMINERS. *TR

ON A TRIP FROM FLORIDA TO OHIO THERE WAS A HUMMING THAT STARTED BETWEEN 40 AN 60 MILES PER HOUR. WHEN IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER THEY IDENTIFIED IT AS A RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING THAT WAS DEFECTIVE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER SERVICE SHOP TO VERIFY THE DEFECT AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING THAT WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE FUNCTIONED FINE FOR A WHILE, BUT THEN THE SAME PROBLEMS QUICKLY RESURFACED. A TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE STATED THE PROBLEM WAS NOT A DEFECT; RATHER IT WAS THE WAY THE VEHICLE WAS INTENDED TO HANDLE DUE TO ITS DRIVE-BY-WIRE SYSTEM. THE REPRESENTATIVE WENT ON TO SAY THE DRIVE-BY-WIRE SYSTEM DID NOT HAVE A TRADITIONAL ROD THAT CONNECTED THE PEDAL TO THE ENGINE; RATHER, THE PEDAL WENT TO AN ELECTRONIC SYSTEM THAT SENSED THE INTENDED ACCELERATION AND CAUSES THE ENGINE TO ACCELERATE AS DIRECTED BY THE DRIVER. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE HESITATION HE COMPLAINED OF WAS NORMAL AS THE SYSTEM WAS DETERMINING HOW MUCH TO ACCELERATE. THE CONSUMER DID NOT BELIEVE THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION WAS DUE TO A STICKING PEDAL; RATHER A PROBLEM WITHIN THE ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, THROTTLE OR ONBOARD COMPUTER.*JB

THEN, RELEASE FOOT FROM GAS PEDAL. THE ENGINE RPM'S WILL DROP TO ABOUT 1000, THEN SPONTANEOUSLY SURGE UPWARD TO ABOUT 1500 RPM. AT THAT POINT, SOMETHING SEEMS TO LIMIT THE RPM'S FROM INCREASING FURTHER. THIS CANNOT BE THE CORRECT OPERATION; WHEN ONE IS NOT STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE ENGINE SHOULD SLOWLY REVERT BACK TO IDLE SPEED (OR BE GOVERNED BY 'ENGINE BRAKING EFFECTS' IF GOING DOWNHILL)...CORRECT? I THINK THAT IN A SITUATION WHERE THIS SPONTANEOUS LIMITATION OF RPM SURGING MIGHT NOT OCCUR, I COULD EXPERIENCE A 'WIDE-OPEN-THROTTLE' SITUATION THAT EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT. I WSA DRIVING 35 MPH, HAVING SLOWED FOR TRAFFIC, THEN CHANGED LANES, BARELY TOUCHED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE TOOK OFF LIKE A DRAGSTER. I WAS ABLE TO PLACE IN NETURAL AND BRAKE THE VEHICLE TO A STOP WHILE THE MOTOR WAS AT HIGH END REV. I CHECKED TO SEE IF THE FLOOR MATS WERE OBSTRUCTING THE GAS PEDEL. THEY WERE NOT. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND STARTED IT TWICE MORE, BOTH TIMES THE ENGINE WAS IN EXTREME HIGH REV MODE. AS I SAT ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ACCELERATOR "SPRANG" BACK ON IT'S OWN. I THEN STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND IT WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. I CALLED TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY AND WAS DIRECTED TO A CUSTOMER SERVICE REP IN CALIFORNIA. I EVENTUALLY MADE IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER IN TULSA, OK, WHERE THE ON BOARD COMPUTER WAS "FLASHED" AND PEDEL RECALL WAS PERFORMED. SERVICE TECH WROTE UP A FLOORMAT ISSUE AND STATED THE "SERVICE ENGINE" LIGHT WAS REPORTED BY ME TO BE ON, WHICH IT WAS NOT. THIS SHOULD BE VERIFIED BY THE INCIDENT REPORT #1002144206 OF 2-24-2010 AS TAKEN OVER THE TELEPHONE BY TOYOTA CSR DON LOMBARDO; PHONE # 800-225-2769. I WOULD BET MY LIFE THIS WAS NOT A MECHANICAL RELATED CAUSE, BUT A PROGRAMMING ISSUE WHICH CAUSED THE THROTTLE BODY TO GO WIDE OPEN. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE COMPUTER "BLACK BOX" INFORMATION WAS DOWNLOADED BY THE DEALER OR IF IT IS TOO LATE. WHEN THE DEALERSHIP GENERAL MANAGER WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN THERE WAS "ZERO" WEAR ON THE GAS PEDEL JOINT, HE WAS SPEECHLESS, BUT EVENTUALLY SAID TOYOTA NEEDS THE VEHICLE TO GO THROUGH IT FROM BUMPER-TO-BUMPER SINCE IT HAS SUCH LOW MILEAGE.
MY CAR HAS HAD THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION SINCE I PURCHASED IT. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN FOR THE REPAIR BUT MY CAR IS STILL ACCELERATING. WHILE DRIVING CAR SPED UP BUT SLOWED ITSELF BACK DOWN TO NORMAL SPEED. THIS IS HOW ITS BEEN SINCE PURCHASE. I NOTICE THIS LAST TIME THAT THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT REFLECT THE CHANGE IN SPEED SO I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY MPH THE CAR SPED OVER MY NORMAL SPEED OF 45MPH. I HAVE CONTACTED MAKER BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE AS OF TODAY. I AM THINKING THIS COULD BE THE PRELUDE TO MY CAR SPEEDING UP AND NOT STOPPING. *TR
