TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 30 MPH HE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLIDE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A CURB. NO ONE WAS INJURED AND THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 30,000.
2007 TOYOTA AVALON. *CW WHILE DRIVING, THE CONSUMERS WIFE ENCOUNTERED A CURVE. SHE SOON REALIZED SHE COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN. SHE WENT OFF THE ROAD AND HIT SOME TREES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND THE CONSUMERS WIFE WAS INJURED. *JB UPDATED 03/09/10
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. HE STATES THAT WHEN DRIVING AT 70 MPH, WHICH WAS THE SPEED LIMIT, A SEMI TRUCK PULLED IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE STILL ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN WHILE HAVING HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE. HE THEN PUT THE VEHICLE ON NEUTRAL AND THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED. HE THEN TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE. WHEN HE PICKED UP THE VEHICLE THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND THAT HE SHOULD TAKE IT TO HIS NEAREST DEALER ONCE HE GOT HOME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55992. UPDATED 2/22/10 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE GAS PEDAL BECAME STUCK. THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED WITHOUT INCIDENT. UPDATED 06/11/10.*JB
IN JANUARY 2010 MY TOYOTA AVALON LTD WITH APX 36K MILES FORCED FORWARD AND I COULD NOT SHUT IT DOWN I HAVE A VERY BAD BACK AND NECK WITH MULTIPLE DISCS REPLACED WITH A METAL PLATE IN MY NECK AND LOW BACK BAD DISCS. I WENT AND HAD MY LOW BACK INJECTED FROM INTENSE PAIN BROUGHT ON AFTER I WAS BANGING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE - GOT DOWN TO PULL UP THE GAS PEDAL WHICH WAS NOT STUCK - FINALLY GOT THE CAR OFF... AFTER RECOVERING FROM THE RESIDUAL EFFECTS AND REST REQUIRED AFTER THE SHOT, I TOOK MY CAR TO TOYOTA REPAIR IN ST GEORGE. I WAS RIDICULED BY SOME ARROGANT EMPLOYEES (YOUNG) WHO SAID THAT THE RUG GOT THE PEDAL STUCK. I ASSURED THIS YOUNG WHIPPER SNAPPER THAT THE RUG WAS NOT THERE WHEN THE CAR WANTED TO HAVE A MIND OF ITS OWN BUT HE DID NOT LISTEN. I WENT INSIDE AND SPOKE TO THE SUPERVISOR WHO WAS VERY ACCOMMODATING AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE ATTITUDE AND HARASSMENT OF HIS EMPLOYEES. MY CAR WAS SERVICED THE NEXT DAY AND THEY ADDED A METAL PLATE SOMEWHERE IN THE GAS PEDAL. I TOLD THE SUPERVISOR A FEW DAYS LATER THAT THE GAS PEDAL NOW GENTLY SLAPS MY FOOT WHEN I LET MY FOOT OFF THE GAS. I WAS TOLD I WOULD GET USED TO IT. I CALLED TOYOTA AGAIN TO TELL THEM THAT WHILE DRIVING MY CAR IS ACTING LIKE IT IS CHANGING GEARS AS IF I WERE DRIVING IT LIKE A SPORTS CAR STYLE (WHICH I DO NOT DO). HE IMMEDIATELY SCHEDULED MY CAR FOR ADDITIONAL REPAIRS A) DIFFERENT GAS PEDAL AND B) RE PROGRAM MY ELECTRONICS COMPUTER FOR SOMETHING I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. I AM 62 YEAR OLD AND WORRY ABOUT DRIVING MY CAR EVERY TIME I TAKE IT OUT OF THE GARAGE NOW. I WANT TOYOTA TO GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY. I PAID CASH FOR MY CAR IN 2007 IT WAS MY FIRST BRAND NEW CAR IN 40 YEARS. I KEEP IT IN MINT CONDITION. I SERVICE IT AT TOYOTA EVERY 3,000 OR SO MILES. I TOLD TOYOTA REPAIR NUMBER OF TIMES CAR ACTING STRANGELY. THEY SAY NO PBM. I PLANNED ON DRIVING THIS CAR FOR THE REST OF MY DRIVING YEARS ON THIS EARTH. I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA AVALON ON ROUTE 80- EAST IN NEW JERSEY TOWARDS NEW YORK AT HIGHWAY SPEED APPROXIMATELY 65 TO 70 MPH. THE CAR ABRUPTLY LURCHED FORWARD AND ACCELERATED FOR A FEW SECONDS. I DID NOT REACT EXCEPT TO PRESS ON THE BRAKES. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS LIGHT TRAFFIC AT THE TIME. I REPORTED THIS TO TOYOTA AND WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER 1001134776. I RETURNED THE CAR TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND WAS GIVEN A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT VEHICLE. *TR
2007 TOYOTA AVALON [XXX], 21,000 MILES, THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE "SMART KEY SYSTEM". PARKED VEHICLE AT LOCAL WALMART STORE LOCKED DOORS WITH PUSH BUTTON AT EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE, I HAD LEFT THE KEY FOB IN THE VEHICLE! ! THE DOORS SHOULD NOT LOCK IN THIS SITUATION, HOWEVER THEY DID! AFTER SHOPPING I RETURNED TO VEHICLE AND TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO UNLOCK DOORS, THE DOORS DID NOT UNLOCK. HAD TO HAVE FRIEND DRIVE ME HOME TO PICK UP SPARE FOB. THE SPARE FOB UNLOCKED THE DOORS. NOTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER (NOURSE, CHILLICOTHE OHIO) WHO ADVISED ME TO GO TO LOCAL RADIO SHACK AND PURCHASE A NEW BATTERY FOR THE FOB. I PURCHASED AND INSTALLED NEW BATTERY AND THE FOB BEGIN TO WORK AGAIN. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY WARNING THAT THE BATTERY NEEDED CHANGED! I COULD HAVE BEEN MANY MILES FROM HOME WHEN THIS HAPPENED, SCARY THOUGHT. I MUST SAY THIS IS THE ONLY TROUBLE I'VE HAD WITH IS VEHICLE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA AVALON ON I-95 S IN VA WHEN IT ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS WELL AS THE EMERGENCY BRAKES WHICH SLOWED THE CAR TO AROUND 30/35 MPH. IT WOULD NOT STOP BUT CONTINUED PULLING AS IF IT WANTED TO GO FASTER. AFTER PULLING TO THE SHOULDER I CALLED 911 BECAUSE MY CAR WAS ABOUT TO GO DOWN A HILL AND I WAS APPROACHING A MERGING ENTRANCE /EXIT RAMP. IN ORDER TO AVOID THIS AS WELL AS STOP THE VEHICLE, I DROVE INTO A DITCH. THE CAR WAS CLEARED BY FIREMEN AND TOWED AWAY. THE POLICE GAVE ME A RIDE HOME. *TR
FRONT WINDSHIELD IS GETTING MANY,MANY,MANY LITTLE CHIPS IN THE VIEWING AREA. *TR
I OWN A 2007 AVALON. WE RECENTLY HAD A LIGHT SNOWFALL OF TWO INCHES. UPON TURNING INTO MY DEAD-END STREET (A VERY SLIGHT DECLINE),I HEARD A BEEP. AFTER THAT,I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT COASTED DOWN THE STREET,PAST THE LEFT-HAND TURN I NEEDED TO MAKE AND CAME TO REST ON THE ROAD. THANKFULLY,THIS WAS A SMALL DEAD-END STREET,I WAS GOING SLOWLY PRIOR TO LOSING POWER (5-10 MPH),AND THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES NEAR ME. IF NOT,I EASILY COULD'VE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. AFTER COASTING TO A STOP,I TRIED TO GO IN REVERSE (SLIGHT INCLINE) TO GET BACK TO THE TURN I NEEDED TO MAKE. HOWEVER,THE ACCELERATOR WAS UNRESPONSIVE WHEN I TRIED TO DO SO AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WAS ON. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS,I DECIDED TO GO FORWARD AND MAKE A U-TURN IN ORDER TO GET BACK TO THE STREET IN WHICH I NEEDED TO TURN. I WAS ABLE TO GO FORWARD AND TURN AROUND BUT AFTER DOING SO,AGAIN THE ACCELERATOR WAS UNRESPONSIVE (FACING VERY SLIGHTLY UPHILL NOW). AFTER TRYING THE ACCELERATOR SEVERAL TIMES,I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED IT BUT THE ACCELERATOR REMAINED UNRESPONSIVE. I THEN PUT THE CAR IN "DRIVE 2" AND WAS ABLE TO INCH MY WAY UP SLOWLY TO THE (NOW) RIGHT-HAND TURN I NEEDED TO TAKE. UPON MAKING THE TURN ONTO THE LEVEL STREET,POWER RETURNED TO MY VEHICLE AND I WAS ABLE TO GET TO MY HOUSE. AFTER THE INCIDENT,I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO NORTHWAY TOYOTA (PLACE OF PURCHASE) AND HAD THEM CHECK IT OUT. THEY SAID THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WAS WORKING AS IT SHOULD AND THAT THERE WAS NO WAY FOR ME TO SHUT IT OFF. I ALSO ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE TIRE TREAD THINKING THAT THIS MAY HAVE LED TO THE PROBLEM AND THAT SNOW TIRES WOULD POSSIBLY HELP THE SITUATION. THE SERVICE DEPT. TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50% TREAD LIFE LEFT IN THE TIRES (THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 23,000 MILES ON IT) AND THAT THE TIRES I HAD SHOULD BE FINE AND SNOW TIRES WOULDN'T BE HELPFUL. THIS INCIDENT COULD OBVIOUSLY BE VERY DANGEROUS SHOULD IT OCCUR AGAIN. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION. *TR
AVALON 2007 XLS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS A PROBLEM. WHEN I PARK TO THE GARAGE, I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. THE BRAKE DID NOT WORK. THE GAS PEDAL WAS HARD, NO CONTROL .I HIT TO THE GARAGE WALL. MY FRONT BUMPER WAS BROKEN AFTER THE HIT. THE HIT IMPACT CAUSED A BIG SHAKE ON MY 2 BABIES ( BOTH UNDER 2 .5 YEAR OLD). *TR
IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS I HAVE EXPERIENCED 5 EVENTS WHERE THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN PRIOR TO THE FINAL EVENTS LEADING UP TO THIS REPORT. SEVERAL TIMES I EXPERIENCED THE CAR ACCELERATING WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL AS I DROVE THROUGH TOWN. THE CAR WOULD GO BACK TO ITS CORRECT RPMS AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES OR AFTER THE CAR WAS STOPPED AND PUT INTO PARK. AFTER EXPERIENCING THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION THE THIRD TIME I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO BE CHECKED AT MY LOCAL AUTO SHOP. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. AFTER 2 MORE INCIDENTS I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO BE CHECKED. AFTER KEEPING MY CAR FOR 2 DAYS THEY FOUND NO UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEMS AND CONFIRMED THAT THE FACTORY MATS WERE INSTALLED PROPERLY. ON 12/28/09 I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. AS I PUSHED ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. AT THAT TIME I WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP MY VEHICLE BY PRESSING HARD ON THE BRAKE. THE ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN WAS TO PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL. I TOOK THE NEXT EXIT WHICH WAS THE EXIT FOR THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER TO MEET ME OUTSIDE BECAUSE I WAS EXPERIENCING ACCELERATION PROBLEMS. I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES BY ALTERNATING FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE AND PRESSING VERY FIRMLY ON THE BRAKES. AS I PULLED INTO THE FRONT OF THE DEALERSHIP I PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND EXITED THE CAR. WITH THE BRAKES SMOKING FROM THE EXCESSIVE BRAKING AND THE CAR'S RPM'S RACING THE MNGER ENTERED MY CAR. HE CONFIRMED THAT THE MATS WERE PROPERLY IN PLACE AND CONFIRMED THE RPM'S WERE VERY HIGH. THEY CONTACTED A TOYOTA TECH TO LOOK AT MY CAR, AFTER 1 1/2 WEEKS WITH MY CAR THEY WERE TOLD BY TOYOTA TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AND ACCELERATOR ASSEMBLY INCLUDING BOTH SENSORS. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR AND I AM NOT CONVINCED THAT TOYOTA HAS FOUND THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR RECEIVED BILL INVOICE FROM CUSTOMER. UPDATED 01/26/10.*JB
WE HAVE HAD THREE INCIDENTS IN THE PAST WITH OUR TOYOTA AVALON....ALL AT TRAFFIC LIGHT APPROACHES. THE FIRST RESULTED IN OUR HITTING THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF US. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE NOR INJURIES SO BOTH PARTIES LEFT SATISFIED. THE SECOND OCCURRED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT A FEW MINUTES LATER AT WHICH TIME MY HUSBAND GOT THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL. THE THIRD OCCURRED SEVERAL WEEKS LATER NEAR OUR HOME. MY HUSBAND MANAGED TO GET THE CAR UNDER CONTROL BY SWERVING INTO A DRIVE NEARBY BY. IT WAS AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT ALSO. THOUGHT IT WAS MY HUSBANDS DRIVING (HA)) BECAUSE HE SEEMS TO BE ACCELERATING INSTEAD OF BRAKING BUT HE WAS ASSURING ME HE WAS BRAKING. *TW
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. IN DECEMBER 2009, WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH ON A BRIDGE THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO FISHTAIL BUT SHE WAS ABLE TO CONTROL IT. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE SUDDENLY AND ALTHOUGH SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL SHE HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. THE ABS AND SKID ASSIST LIGHTS WERE BOTH ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN. SHE ALSO STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. SHE HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER OR THE DEALER TO-DATE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 32,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH DURING SNOWY WEATHER, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED. HE ENGAGED THE BRAKES YET THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A GUARD RAIL. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE HEAD AND SHOULDERS. A PASSENGER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE SHIFTING GEARS FROM PARK TO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL BACKWARDS. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON LEVEL GROUND . THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SINCE A CRASH COULD OCCUR. DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH AND HAD TO STOP FOR A PEDESTRIAN CROSS WALK. SUDDEN ACCELERATION OF MY TOYOTA AVALON. WAS ABLE TO STOP BY SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL AND HITTING BRAKE HARD. STOPPED AGAIN A FEW BLOCKS LATER AND GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO DETERMINE THERE WAS NO FLOOR MAT INVOLVEMENT. *TR
WE OWN A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED. WE HAVE RECEIVED RECALL NOTICES ON THE FLOOR MATS,ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND AN OIL SUPPLY HOSE. ALL ARE TO BE CORRECTED NEXT WEEK. THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF LETTING YOU KNOW THAT NEITHER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL NOR THE FLOOR MAP IS THE CAUSE OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I SAY THIS BECAUSE MY WIFE DRIVES WITH HAND CONTROLS WITH A STEEL PLATE GUARDING AND PROTECTING THE ACCELERATOR FROM BEING USED BY HER. THEREFORE IT IS NOT THESE ITEMS CAUSING THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. WE HAVE HAD IT HAPPEN ON 3 OR 4 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS SO IT WAS NOT ISOLATED NOR WERE THESE RECALL ITEMS AT FAULT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. ON DEC 3, 2009, THE CONTACT PULLED INTO DRIVEWAY. WHEN HE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE VEHICLE JERKED FORWARD. SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE HIT THE CORNER POST OF A FENCE FOLLOWED BY A TREE AND FINALLY STOPPED. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE OR AFTER THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST PRODUCED NO ERROR CODES. THE SERVICE MANAGER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. LATER, THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, FLOOR MAT AND OIL HOSE RECALLS (RECALLS 09V388000 & 10V017000). THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALERSHIP ALSO PERFORMED AN OVERRIDE ON THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000. WE HAVE A TOYOTA AVALON 2007 & HAVE NOTICED THAT AFTER WE REENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL THERE IS A SUDDEN ACCELERATION UP TO THE PRESET SPEED, THERE HAS ALSO BEEN NUMEROUS INCIDENTS WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATES PAST THE PRESET SPEED & WE HAVE TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL & THEN RESET IT. *TR

DEAR NHTSA, I BOUGHT THE TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED EDITION 2007. MY WIFE IS THE MAIN DRIVER FOR THIS VEHICLE. SHE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED THE GAS ACCELERATION ON THIS VEHICLE FOR THE PAST 6 WEEKS. I TOLD THEM THAT WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATES BY ITSELF ON AND OFF SOMETIMES, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE TECHNICIAN TO IDENTIFIES THE ISSUE. THE CONSUMER REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD HIM TO CHECK THE FLOOR MAT. SHORTLY AFTER, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL AGAIN. SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 11:30 AM, I DROVE ABOUT 4 MILES, GOT ONTO A FREEWAY (NORTHBOUND I-5) IN SAN DIEGO, AT WHICH TIME MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE, WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I LOOKED DOWN AT MY FEET, SAW THAT THE FLOOR MAT WAS CORRECTLY IN PLACE. THE CAR BEHAVED AS THOUGH "CRUISE CONTROL" WERE ON, SO I TOGGLED CRUISE CONTROL ON, THEN OFF. I ALSO DEPRESSED THE BUTTON FOR TURNING THE CAR OFF (IT HAS A "SMART KEY" IGNITION), BUT THE CAR DID NOT STOP. ENGINE SPEED CONTINUED TO INCREASE. MY BRAKES COULD SLOW THE CAR A BIT (FROM 70 MPH DOWN TO 65 MPH, BUT THE CAR QUICKLY ACCELERATED BACK UP TO 70 MPH AND HIGHER. I DOWN-SHIFTED (INTO ONE OF THE "MOUNTAIN-DRIVING" GEARS, THEN DOWN-SHIFTED AGAIN AS I CONTEMPLATED HOW TO NAVIGATE AROUND TRAFFIC AND OFF THE FREEWAY. THE ENGINE TACHOMETER INDICATED THAT THE SPEED WAS INCREASING. I TRANSITIONED OFF THE I-5 AND ONTO THE EASTBOUND I-8 FREEWAY, AND SLOWED ENOUGH, WITH ALL MY WEIGHT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, TO THE NEAREST OFFRAMP. I COULD NOT BRING THE CAR TO A COMPLETE STOP, BUT FINALLY SHIFTED INTO PARK BEFORE HITTING ANYTHING. I NOW SHUT OFF THE CAR. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR, IN PARK, AND THE ENGINE SPEED METER INDICATED 4500 RPM IN A FEW SECONDS. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND PHONED AAA TO TOW ME TO THE NEAREST DEALER. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND A CAUSE FOR THIS UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CALLED. THEY SAID TO PICK UP THE CAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THAT NORMALLY SERVICES THIS VEHICLE, AND THEY HAD THE CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS. THEY DID SOME MINOR REPAIR ON THE THROTTLE, BUT SAID THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE NOR FIX THE CASE OF THIS. THEY ALSO REPAIRED THE BRAKES, WHICH WERE BADLY BURNED. I WAS APPREHENSIVE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, AND FINALLY TOLD THE DEALER TO GET ME A REPLACEMENT, WHICH I AM NOW DRIVING. THE CAR WHICH HAD UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION IS AT THE DEALERS LOT AS OF YESTERDAY. *TR UPDATED 11/18/09
DEFECTIVE HOSE IN THE ENGINE/OIL SYSTEM FAILED CAUSING ALL OF THE OIL IN THE CARS ENGINE TO DRAIN IMMEDIATELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MY TOYOTA DEALER WHERE THEY EXPLAINED THAT SOME AVALONS HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN. TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGES THIS BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. MY CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND WAS FIXED FOR FREE AS IT WAS COVERED. HOWEVER, MY DRIVEWAY IS LOADED WITH ALL OF THE OIL FROM MY ENGINE. IF THIS HAPPENED ON THE ROAD I WOULD HAVE LOST THE ENGINE. *TR

TECH USED TOYOTA SCAN TOOL FOUND CODES P0024 P0012 FOR VVTI TIMING MALFUNCTIONS.TTECH REPLACED BOTH VVTI CAMS AND CAM HOUSINGS, CAM GEARS, INTAKE GASKETS, OIL PUMP GASKET, OIL PAN GASKET, HEAD GASKETS, TIMING COVER GASKET. INITIAL ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR WAS @ $6400 AS CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO MILEAGE. AFTER DISCUSSION, THE DEALER GOT TOYOTA TO PICK UP THE COST OF MOST OF THE PARTS. I PAID $2527 FOR LABOR AND $28.57 FOR PARTS. SUBSEQUENTLY THE DEALER ADVISED ME THAT THE PROBLEM HAD OCCASIONED A TOYOTA RECALL. I SUBMITTED A CLAIM A MONTH AGO TO TOYOTA FOR A REFUND, BUT HAVE HAD NO REPLY FROM THE COMPANY.
CAR HAS DEVELOPED A SHUDDER WHEN SHIFTING, AT TIMES IT IS VERY SEVERE ON ONE EPISODE WHILE PASSING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAR BEGAN TO VIBRATE SO VIOLENTLY THAT CONTROL OF THE CARE WAS LOST UNTIL VIBRATION SUBSIDED. *TR THIS VEHICLE HAS 38,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS HAD THE SHUDDER FOR ABOUT 10,000 MILES, THERE HAVE BEEN TWO OF THE VIOLENT EPISODES, IN THE LAST 10,000 MILES, HAVE TAKEN CAR TO DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR THE SHUDDER. THIS VEHICLE IS UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY DEALER HAS REPROGRAMMED THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER, HAS HAD NO EFFECT ON SHUDDER AND THE VIOLENT EPISODES TOOK PLACE AFTER THE REPROGRAMMING OF THE COMPUTER.
2007 TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED. DEFECTIVE LASER CRUISE CONTROL. NOTE: VEHICLE HAS KEYLESS IGNITION. WHEN ACTIVATED THE UNIT WOULD REGISTER OBSTRUCTIONS THAT WERE NOT THERE OR WOULD NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE A VEHICLE DIRECTLY IN FRONT. WHEN THE UNIT RECOGNIZES THE OBJECT IT STARTS TO SLOW DOWN, APPLY THE BRAKES, AND WHEN THE OBSTRUCTION IS FAR ENOUGH AWAY IT RESUMES SPEED. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN IT RESUMES SPEED. THE ACCELERATOR IS ALMOST PUSHED TO THE FLOOR AND ACCELERATION IS RAPID. THE BEST WAY TO DISENGAGE THE SYSTEM IS FROM THE CONTROL STALK ON THE STEERING COLUMN. I HAD THIS PROBLEM FROM THE TIME I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2007. AFTER TWO YEARS OF COMPLAINING TO THE DEALER THE UNIT WAS RECOGNIZED AS BEING DEFECTIVE AND REPLACED IN JUNE 2009. THE DEALER CLAIMED THAT HE HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY DIRECTIVE FROM TOYOTA USA CONCERNING A PROBLEM WITH THE UNIT. WITH ALL THE PUBLICITY THAT TOYOTA IS RECEIVING CONCERNING ACCELERATOR PROBLEMS, I THOUGHT THAT IN SOME CASES THE CAUSE MAY BE RELATED TO COMPUTER PROBLEM IN ADDITION TO A 'JAMMED" OR STUCK ACCELERATOR. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ,WITHOUT WARNING, THE "V V T I OIL LINE" BURST, DRAINING ALL THE OIL FROM THE ENGINE. THERE IS LOSS OF POWER WITH POSSIBLE ENGINE FAILURE. DASH INDICATOR ON MY 2007 TOYOTA AVALON SIGNALED THAT WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID WAS LOW. I FILLED THE TANK WITH FLUID. THE NEXT DAY A POOL OF WASHER FLUID WAS ON MY GARAGE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR SERVICE ON 2/14/2009. I WAS TOLD LEAKING WAS A COMMON PROBLEM BECAUSE THE OE LINE USED TO CARRY FLUID THROUGH THE SYSTEM WAS THE WRONG SIZE. THE DEALER REMOVED THE INCORRECT LINE AND REPLACED IT WITH THE RECOMMENDED CORRECT SIZED LINE. I WAS CHARGED $78.26 FOR PARTS AND SERVICE. WHEN I COMPLAINED THAT THIS WAS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THE OE WAS NOT THE RIGHT SIZE, I WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT TOYOTA CORPORATE FOR RELIEF. WHEN PARKING MY 2007 TOYOTA AVALON IN A PARKING GARAGE, I ENTERED THE PARKING SPACE AND I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SO THE CAR WOULD COAST INTO THE SPACE. HOWEVER, WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE CAR, INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN. SUDDENLY ACCELERATED INTO THE BARRIER CABLES AT THE END OF THE PARKING SPACE, CAUSING $2392.86 WORTH OF DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. UPDATED 03/30/10.
MY HUSBAND WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON OCTOBER 28, 2008. THE AIRBAG ON THE STEERING WHEEL DEPLOYED AS DID A KNEE AIRBAG. INJURIES TO HIS LOWER LEGS ARE EXTENSIVE AND I THINK THESE INJURIES WERE CAUSED BY THE EXPLOSIVE FORCE OF THE KNEE AIRBAG. HIS LEFT LEG SUSTAINED A LARGE LACERATION ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG BY 4 INCHES WIDE. AND A LARGE AREA OF TISSUE DAMAGE. THE LACERATION COULD NOT BE SUTURED AND HAS REMAINED OPEN FOR MORE THAN TWO WEEKS. A VERY LARGE AREA OF TISSUE HAS GANGRENE BECAUSE OF THE EXTENT OF THE INJURY. HIS RIGHT LOWER LEG WAS COMPLETELY ECCHYMOTIC AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND THERE IS NOW A LOCALIZED AREA OF TISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE DEBRIDED. (IT LOOKS LIKE A HUGE BLOOD BLISTER.) EXTENSIVE DEBRIDEMENT OF TISSUE WILL BE DONE ON BOTH LEGS NEXT WEEK. FOR THE FIRST DAY FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT, WE HAD NO IDEA HOW HIS LOWER LEGS COULD HAVE SUSTAINED SUCH INJURIES. SHORTLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT, MY HUSBAND MENTIONED THAT SOMEHOW HE COULDN'T STEP ON THE BRAKE AFTER FEELING THE IMPACT OF THE CAR THAT HIT HIM. WHEN I WENT TO VIEW OUR DAMAGED CAR I WAS VERY SURPRISED TO SEE THE AIR BAG THAT WAS LOCATED AT THE LEVEL OF THE DRIVER'S LEGS. BUT IT SEEMED TO EXPLAIN THE EXTENSIVE BILATERAL LOWER LEG INJURIES AS WELL AS MY HUSBAND'S INABILITY TO REACH THE BRAKE. THESE INJURIES HAVE BEEN VERY DEBILITATING. *TR

THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY JOLTED AHEAD AS IF THE CONSUMER PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR. THE TACHOMETER SUDDENLY JUMPED FROM 2,100 TO 4,800 RPM TO RAISE THE VEHICLE SPEED 6 OR 7 MPH. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER IT WAS A NORMAL OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. *JB

SERVICE ADVISOR TRIED TO TELL US IT HAPPENED BECAUSE THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT DRIVERS USING THE CAR. FINALLY A TECHNICIAN CAME IN AND TOLD THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN TO CORRECT SUCH PROBLEMS. THE CORRECTION WAS "PERFORMED ECM RECALIBRATION TO IMPROVE SHIFTING". I DIDN'T KNOW TO REPORT IT AT THE TIME, BUT I THINK OUR PROBLEM SHOULD BE COUNTED. THE DEALER DOWNPLAYED OUR COMPLAINT SAYING IT WAS HOW WE WERE DRIVING THE CAR, AND THAT THE CAR COULDN'T TELL WHICH OF US WAS DRIVING. THAT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I HAVE HEARD. 2007 TOYOTA AVALON WITH A GEAR SHIFTING PROBLEM. CONSUMER STATES THAT WHEN THE GEAR IS CHANGING IT FEELS LIKE IT IS GETTING STUCK AND THEN BUMPS REAL HARD WHEN IT SWITCHES TO THE RIGHT GEAR. *KB THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED WHEN SHE SLOWS DOWN, THE CHANGE IN THE GEAR IS ROUGH AND LOUD.
WASHER FLUID BOTTLE LEAKS, ALL FLUID LEAKED OUT DURING A 4 HOUR FAMILY TRIP TO KANSAS CITY. TRIED FILLING WITH BOTTLED WATER, THE WATER JUST RAN RIGHT THROUGH. BUGS ON THE WINDSHIELD MADE DRIVING TOUGH, HAD TO STOP AND CLEAN THE WINDOWS. *TR
THE BRAKE PEDAL SINKS SLOWLY ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WHEN STOPPED WITH PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, THAT IS A VERY DISCONCERTING FEELING WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL SINKS SLOWLY TO THE FLOOR; IT ACTUALLY STOPS ONLY AT THE BOTTOM MECHANICAL STOP FOR THE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THREE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERS, AND THE COMPLAINT HAS BEEN FILED WITH TOYOTA USA AND TOYOTA JAPAN. THE LOCAL DEALERS SAY IT IS A NORMAL CONDITION, THAT'S PREPOSTEROUS. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE TOYOTA AVALON AND CAMRY AROUND THE 2007 PRODUCTION YEAR. SUBJECT VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM IS BELIEVED TO BE AN INTERNAL LEAK IN THE ANTI-SKID SYSTEM. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERS WILL NOT MAKE THE NEEDED REPAIRS. I REQUESTED THAT TOYOTA USA SERVICE REPS INSPECT MY CAR ON THEIR NEXT VISIT TO THIS AREA, AND THAT REQUEST WAS REFUSED BY FINDLAY TOYOTA OF HENDERSON. I FILED A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT ON 7/6/2010 AND NO REPLY HAS BEEN RECEIVED TO DATE. I SUSPECT THAT NO ACTION WAS TAKEN. THE PROBLEM EXISTS TO THIS DATE, AND THIS IS A FORMAL REQUEST FOR THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THE ANTISKID SYSTEM ON MY VEHICLE. *TR

HE HAD JUST DROPPED MY SISTER-IN-LAW OFF AT THE AIRPORT AND WAS TRAVELING ON THE COURTNEY CAMPBELL PARKWAY WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED. HE EXITED ONTO A SERVICE ROAD, POSTED AT 15 MPH, AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, CRASHING THROUGH A GUARDRAIL AND PLUNGING INTO TAMPA BAY. HE DID NOT GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. WITNESSES SAY HE DID NOT APPEAR TO BRAKE BEFORE HITTING THE GUARDRAIL. NOBODY COULD DETERMINE AT THE TIME WHY THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED; HIS TOXICOLOGY REPORT WAS CLEAR. THE CAR HAS LONG SINCE BEEN SALVAGED SINCE TOYOTA'S ACCELERATION ISSUES WERE NOT PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE AT THE TIME TWO YEARS AGO. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL DEVICE REGULATES THE TIRES TO MAINTAIN THE SAME EXACT SPEED. WHEN DRIVING ON A RELATIVELY SMALL INCLINE AT 5 MPH IN INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE TRACTION CONTROL DEVICE SLOWS DOWN THE SPEED OF ONE TIRE TO MATCH THE SPEED OF THE SLIDING TIRE. THIS ABRUPTLY DECREASES THE OVERALL SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY IS INCREASED. THE DEALER STATED THAT SOME VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH AN OVERRIDE SYSTEM DUE TO THIS FAILURE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS NOT BUILT WITH THE OVERRIDE MECHANISM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000.
