THE CHROME PLATED WHEELS WERE PURCHASED FROM & INSTALLED BY TOYOTA DEALER WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. THE PLATING STARTED TO PEEL OFF SINCE EARLY 2000. THEN, MY TIRES (NO MATTER WHAT BRAND OF THE TIRES I USED) SHOWED LEAKING ON TWO OF THEM DUE TO THE SERIOUS CORROSION OF THE RIMS. I HAVE TO PUMP THE AIR EVERY WEEK IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE CORRECT PRESSURE AS OF TODAY. IT'S GETTING WORSE... I BELIEVE THIS IS THE ISSUE CAUSING BY THE WHEEL MANUFACTURER TOYOTA AUTHORIZED AND THE CHEAP MATERIALS THEY USED. I BOUGHT THE TOP OF THE LINE MODEL WITH THE CHROME WHEELS INSTALLED BY TOYOTA. OBVIOUSLY, I DIDN'T GET WHAT I'VE PAID FOR!
I HAD A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IT AND SHE IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE CAR. 1) SHE STOPPED AT HIGHWAY, SINCE ALL CARS IN FRONT OF HER STOPPED. 2) A 98 NISSAN HIT HER CAR FROM BEHIND AROUND 50-60 MILES/H. MY WIFE'S CAR HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER, AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER CAR HIT ANOTHER CAR. 3)EVEN THE FRONT SECTION OF MY WIFE'S WAS SERIOUS DAMAGED, NON OF THE FOUR AIRBAG DEPLOYED. THIS ONE IS NOT MY COMPLAINT HERE, JUST PROVIDED AS A REFERENCE INFORMATION. 4)THE DRIVER'S SEAT BECAME FLAT (BEEN DAMAGED BY MY WIFE'S BODY, AND SHE IS ONLY AROUND 130 LBS) RIGHT AFTER THE IMPACT, AND NO MORE SUPPORT FOR THE BODY, (AT THIS SITUATION, SEAT BELT DOES NOT HELP AT ALL), AND SHE SLIPPED OUT OF THE SEAT, AND HER HEAD HIT SOMEWHERE INSIDE THE CAR. SHE GOT SERIOUS CONCUSION. 5) I ONLY SAW TOYOTA TESTED FRONT IMPACT, SIDE IMPACT, DID NOT SEE ANY REAR IMPACT. THE DRIVER'S SEAT IS SUPPOSED TO SUPPORT THE BODY AT THE TIME, AND IT FAILED TO STAY, AND LET THE BODY SLIP OUT OF IT, WITH SEAT BELT ONLY HOOK THE LEGS. 6) THE STRENGTH OF THE DRIVER SEAT (POWER SEAT) NEEDS TO BE EVALUATED, AND I WANT AN ANSWER FROM TOYOTA. 4)
MY TOYOTA 2000 CAMRY HAD AN ACCIDENT WHICH RESULTED IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, SIMILAR TO THE RECALL, YET IT WASN'T RECALLED AND TOYOTA EXECUTIVE COMPLAINTS AND THE DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR REFUSE TO ASSIST ME. MY INSURANCE IS WITH GEICO, 800- 424-3426, CLAIM NUMBER 0115001950101329. THERE WAS PROPERTY DAMAGE IN AMOUNT OF 447.00 AND THERE WAS AN INJURY. I WAS A GAS PUMP, BACKING UP, TO LEAVE THE HESS/WILCO STATION IN KEMPSVILLE, VIRGINIA, WHEN MY CAR ACCELERATED FOR NO APPARENT REASON, OUT OF CONTROL. HIT A POLL, AND LUNGED FORWARD AND DID THE SAME THING. *TR
THE CONSUMER STATED THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD UPGRADE THE AIR BAGS IN THE VEHICLE OR DISABLE THEM.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V154000. I AM EXPERIENCING THIS DEFECT WITH MY 200 TOYOTA CAMRY AS DESCRIBED IN YOUR RECALL (REAR SUSPENSION, HUB ASSEMBLIES). WHEN I CONTACTED TOYOTA TO INFORM THEM OF THE PROBLEM I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE VIN NUMBER WAS NOT ON THE LIST. I EXPLAINED THAT THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AND THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY AS IDENTIFIED IN THE RECALL. PERHAPS TOYOTA NEEDS TO EXPAND THEIR RECALL CAMPAIGN. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. *NM
2000 TOYOTA CANRY XLE, PURCHASED FROM NEW ROCHELLE TOYOTA, NEW ROCHELLE , NY AS CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED WITH 40K MILES ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS OVER THE COURSE OF 5 YEARS BEGINNING IN 2005 -- I HAVE EXPERIENCED ACCELLERATOR REVVING OR STICKING, AND SOMETIMES BOTH TOGETHER. SOMETIMES JUST KICKING IT STOPPED IT, ANOTHER TIME I HAD TO THROW THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND PULL UP THE PEDAL WITH MY FOOT UNDER IT, ANOTHER TIME I THREW IT INTO NEUTRAL AND IT EASED UP. EACH TIME I PULLED OVER, SHUT OFF THE CAR AND RESTRATED AND IT DIDNLT HAPPEN AGAIN FOR QUITE SOME TIME. MENTIONED IT TO TOYOTA AND THEY MORE OR LESS BLAMED ME. TOLD MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO AT LEAST CHECKED THE BRAKES AND SNESORS, BUT HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL ME BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SERVICE WARNING. NO REPAIR WAS EVER DONE.
WHILE DRIVING THE HEAD REST CAUSED POOR VISIBILITY. THE HEAD REST CAN NOT BE REMOVED WHILE DRIVING. THE DRIVER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT THE HEAD REST ARE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS VEHICLE. *NM *SC *JB
VEHICLE WAS PARKED OVERNIGHT. UPON ENTERING THE VEHICLE THE NEXT MORNING CONSUMER SMELLED SMOKE. HE DISCOVERED THE SMOKE HAD COME FROM THE PASSENGER'S DOOR PANEL WHICH WAS NOT BURNING ANYMORE.*AK
THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR FAILED TO OPERATE PROPERLY. THE DRIVER TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR AND WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. THE DRIVER CALLED THE DEALER FOR AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT DAY. THE CONSUMER SPOKE TO A MECHANIC, AND THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE LOCK MECHANISM MALFUNCTIONED, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK THE LOCK MECHANISM WAS REPLACED. *SC *JB
GOODYEAR, AQUATREAD, 205/65R15, DOT# MDUP3MHP4301. ALL FOUR TIRES ARE WEARING ON THE OUTER EDGES. THERE IS ONLY 28,000 MILES OF TREAD WEAR ON THE TIRES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN COMPLETELY ALIGNED HOWEVER, THE TIRES CONTINUE TO WEAR EXCESSIVELY ON THE OUTER EDGES. OWNER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND IS STILL WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. *AK THE CONSUMER FELT THE TIRE WERE UNSATISFACTORY IN RAIN OR WET ROADS. THE VEHICLE WOULD SLIDE AND SKID IN WET WEATHER. *BF *NM
I HAVE A TOYOTA SOLARA, 2000. HAD TO GET ENGINE REPLACED AT 77,000 MILES. NOW THEY SAY IT NEEDS $3800 IN EMISSION REPAIRS. MANY OTHER VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD ENGINES REPLACED ARE NOW EXPERIENCING EMISSION PROBLEMS. THIS MATTER NEEDS INVESTIGATED!
WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND REMAINED ON. SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE STALLED. DRIVER WAS NOT ABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE, AND HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED ON TWO OCCASIONS THE BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP HIS VEHICLE. THERE WAS A PULSATION WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE FIRST TIME THE BRAKES FAILED THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE HIT A VEHICLE THAT STOPPED IN FRONT. THE DEALER EXAMINED THE VEHICLE, AND SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES. AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT HE REPLACED THE ROTORS. HE FOUND THAT A CRACK HAD FORMED ON THE OLD ROTORS. HE BELIEVED THE CRACK WAS THE REASON FOR THE VEHICLE NOT STOPPING WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. *AK UPDATED 11/16/2005 - *NM
CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT A SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH AND APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT WARNING, AND HITTING A GUARD RAIL. UPON IMPACT, AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *AK
AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON AT START UP AND STAYS ON WHEN WEATHER GETS COLD. DEFECT DOES NOT OCCUR IN SUMMER. ALSO IF VEHICLE IS WARMED UP OR KEPT IN A HEATED BUILDING OR THE WEATHER IS WARM THE AIR BAG LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON AT START UP AND STAY ON. DEALER SAYS MUST REPLACE SENSOR. *JB

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE REAR AXLE OR WHEEL BEARING. TOYOTA ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE IN 2004 AT 29,000 MILES; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED IN DECEMBER OF 2007. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN PROPERLY CORRECTED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 74,811.
CONSUMER'S VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE VERY SAME PROBLEM AS MENTIONED IN RECALL 01V012000 CONCERNING SPEED CONTROL CABLE/ACCELERATOR STICKING. *AK
THE ABS ON MY CAR ACTIIVATED WHEN I WAS TRAVELING ROUGHLY 26 MPH CAUSING ME TO ENTER AN INTERSECTION 2000 TOYOTA MR2 SPYDER. *AK
CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN ANOTHER VEHICLE STRUCK IT IN FRONT. UPON IMPACT, AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *AK
CAMRY TIMING BELT BROKE AT 46,700 MILES, TIMING BELT NOT EVEN RECOMMENDED TO BE REPLACED UNTIL 90,000 MILES. *BF *SC
THE BRAKE LIGHT STOPPED OPERATEING WHILE BRAKING. THIS ALMOST CAUSES ANOTHER VEHICLE TO REAR END CONSUMER'S VEHICLE. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. *AK
MY DAD WAS ON HIS WAY TO WORK AND HE STRUCK A 2000 POUND BULL, HIS AIR BAG ON HIS 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY DID NOT DEPLOY AND HIS NECK WAS BROKE WHICH RESULTED TO HIS DEATH. *NM

MY ACCIDENT/INJURIES BECAUSE THE DEFECTS/FLAWS OF MY CAR: BRAKE SYSTEMS, ACCELERATOR PEDAL, UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, SPEED OUT OF CONTROL, CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS, ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEMS...I HAVE THE CAR FIXED, REPAIRS SOMETIMES (RECORDS AT DEALERSHIP). THEY REPLACED COMPUTER BOARD...BUT STILL HAVE A PROBLEMS... MY ISSUES ARE ABOUT MY TOYOTA CAMRY/MODEL 2000 GOT ACCIDENT/INJURIES ON OCT. 2004 BECAUSE THE CAR HAD MANY PROBLEMS ARE: ROUGH OF CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS, ROUGH SPEED/RPM, GAS PEDAL, BRAKE, ROUGH IDLE, SUDDENLY ACCELERATED - WITHOUT PRESSING A GAS PEDAL. I HIT THE CAR AND MY FRONT BUMPER IS ALMOST FELT OFF. IT COSTS OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPLACE BUT MY INJURIES IS NO MONEY TO REPLACE ITS BACK TO NORMAL, MY AUTO INSURANCE NOT PAYING MY MEDICAL BILLS ANY MORE... *TR
WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO CONSUMER'S VEHICLE HEAD ON. UPON IMPACT, BOTH AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE SEAT BELT BROKE, CAUSING IT TO HIT THE GLASS WINDSHIELD. VISOR INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE SHEARED OFF AND FELL ONTO OF THE DRIVER HEAD AND CAUSED A DEEP SCAR ON TOP OF THE DRIVER 'S FOREHEAD. THE DRIVER WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION.
TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, SHIFT CABLE FAILED. *BF THE CONSUMER PLACED THE SHIFTER IN PARK AND STARTED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO MOVE FORWARD. THE CONSUMER LOOKED ATT HE INDICATOR ON THE DASH WHICH INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL IN DRIVE. THE CONSUMER THEN TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. IT WAS LATER DETERMINED THAT THE SHIFT CABLE BROKE. *NM
THE VEHICLE HAS WHITE SMOKE WHEN STARTING CAR. CAR IS PARKED INSIDE GARAGE WHEN NOT IN USE.HITE SMOKE COMING FORM MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE. TOYOTA TECH. SUGGESTED THAT CUSTOMER REPLACE STEM SEALS AT CUSTOMERS EXPENSE.*AK
VEHICLE SEEMS TO HAVE TROUBLE WITH TRANSMISSION (AUTOMATIC). ROUGH WHEN DRIVING IN REVERSE. TOYOTA TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED THAT TRANSMISSION BE REPLACE AT COST OF OWNER. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, NO WARNING LIGHTS OR TEMPERATURE LIGHTS WENT OFF, BUT A RATTLING SOUND OCCURRED, PRIOR TO A "POP", WHICH WAS THE ENGINE "BLOWING" UP. THIS LATER WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE BLOW UP OF ROD #4, WHICH TORE THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK, WITH CURRENT REPAIR COST ESTIMATED AT $6000. THE VEHICLE HAS RECEIVED REGULAR MAINTENANCE INCLUDING OIL CHANGES WITHIN MANUFACTURER GUIDELINES. SINCE THIS YEAR AND MODEL WAS PART OF THE "OIL SLUDGE" MESS, I INQUIRED WHY I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS POTENTIAL FOR THE ENGINE TO SEIZE SUDDENLY WITH NO WARNING. THEY INDICATED MY VIN SUPPOSEDLY IS NOT PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN AND SINCE THE MILEAGE IS 96000 MILES, I AM NOT COVERED. TOYOTA TOTES A "QUALITY" PRODUCT, YET THIS IS THE FIRST CAR IN MY LIFE THAT HAS NOT MADE IT TO 140,000 MILES OR MORE. TOYOTA TO DATE HAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE WITH NO EXPLANATION OF WHY THE ENGINE WOULD SUDDENLY DIE WITH SO FEW MILES. THEY INDICATE THAT THIS IS NOT RELATED TO THEIR OIL SLUDGE NIGHTMARE OR ENGINE DESIGN PROBLEMS.*AK
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) MY MOTHER OWNED A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY AND SHE HAD TWO ACCIDENTS IN HER CAR WHILE IN PARKING LOTS DUE TO SUDDEN ACCELERATION. SHE DID NOT TELL THE FAMILY AT THE TIME BECAUSE SHE WAS 84 AND THOUGHT SHE MIGHT LOSE HER LICENSE. ONE ACCIDENT CAUSED $3,500 IN DAMAGE. SHE HAS SINCE PASSED AWAY AND I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT IT. IT HAS CRUISE CONTROL [XXX] . OUR FAMILY STILL OWNS THE CAR. I CALLED A LOCAL DEALER AND GOT THE NATIONAL NUMBER FOR TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THAT THE CAR HAD A MECHANICAL ACCELERATOR SYSTEM. WE HAD A MECHANIC CHECK IT OUT AND HE SAID IT WAS A HYBRID SYSTEM, PARTLY ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM. TOYOTA MISLEAD US. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT TIME WINDSHIELD BECOME HAZY AND WAS OBSTRUCTING THE DRIVER'S VIEW. DEALERSHIP INSPECTED VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES, AND INDICATED TO THE CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM WAS VINYL OUT GASSY.*AK THE CONSUMER INDICATED THAT THERE IS A HAZE ON THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE'S WINDSHIELD. THE CONSUMER HAS CLEANED THE WINDOWS BUT THE HAZE REAPPEARS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO INDICATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS VINYL OUT GASES PER TOYOTA TECH ASSISTANCE. THE DEALER ALSO INDICATED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD LAST FROM 6 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR AND COULDN'T BE CORRECTED. THE HAZE IMPAIRS THE CONSUMER VISION ESPECIALLY AT DUSK AND AT NIGHT. THE CONSUMER ALSO BELIEVES THIS PROBLEM IS A HEALTH ISSUE AND DRIVES WITH THE CONVERTIBLE TOP DOWN. *NM
WHILE TRYING TO JACK MY CAMRY TO CHANGE A TIRE ON DRY, LEVEL CONCRETE, THE TOYOTA PROVIDED JACK SLIPPED OUT FROM UNDER MY CAR TWICE. I WAS USING THE JACK IN THE TOYOTA MANDATED POSITION, AND WAS NOT ON ANY TYPE OF LOOSE OR UNSTABLE SOIL. THE TOYOTA JACK HAS A VERY SMALL BASE THAT IS EASILY ROCKED SIDE TO SIDE WITH NO STABILITY. THE JACK IS EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS AND VERY MUCH A POTENTIAL HAZARD TO ANYONE USING IT BECAUSE OF ITS PRACTICALLY CONVEX-SHAPED BASE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED ABS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND STAYED ON UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. THERE WAS A SCREECHING NOISE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACED THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND THE REAR DRUMS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. *AK UPDATE 4/9 *TR
HAD TO PAY O FIX THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE NEWS PAPER SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON TOYOTA CAMRY'S. WHY DOES TOYOTA NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR AND RE-IMBURSE THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THIS REPAIR SINCE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RUN PROPERLY OR AT ALL WITHOUT THE REPAIR. THIS IS A KNOW PROBLEM AND I FEEL THE COMSUMER IS PICKING UP THE BILL FOR THE MANUFACTURERS MISTAKE.*AK
ALLOY WHEELS ON MY VEHICLE ARE SO CORRODED THAT IN ORDER TO KEEP AIR IN TIRES THE WHEELS MUST BE SEALED WITH A RUBBER SEALANT.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED REAR AXLE PRODUCED A LOUD GRINDING NOISE RECALL 00V154000 WAS ISSUED. HOWEVER, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK

THE ENGINE DEVELOPED EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE SLUDGE SO MUCH SO THAT THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED.*AK
I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE, WHICH HAS 51.565 MILES. ON JULY 31, 2004 THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I CALLED THE DEALER AND BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO BE CHECKED ON AUGUST 04, 2004. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME IT WAS THE FUEL EVAPORATOR VALVE THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $220, BUT THEY NEED TO ORDER THE PART, SO WE SET ANOTHER APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED ON AUGUST 10, 2004. I PICKED THE CAR UP TODAY (JULY 31, 2004) AND PAID $114.50 FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS (I AM HOPING MY NEXT BILL WILL BE AROUND $110 SO I DO NOT GO TO FAR OVER THE ESTIMATED PRICE, BUT LOOKING AT THE BILL THEY ARE ESTIMATING $99.07 TO INSTALL AND 48.85 FOR THE PART SO I AM GUESSING I WILL BE WELL OVER THE $220 PRICE QUOTED). I THEN WENT OUT TO THE WEB TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHAT THIS PART IS AND I DISCOVERED MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS NATURE ON THE WEB. DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND SEE DOZENS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM TOYOTA USERS. CANT TOYOTA CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, AS ITS OBVIOUSLY A DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING FLAW? *AK
THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE STALLED. THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A SHUT DOWN, AND IT BECAME DIFFICULT TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC DISCOVERED THE EGR VALVE WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STALL OUT. *JB
I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH 62,000 MILES THAT HAS HAD THE OIL CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES OR LESS, AND HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE ROAD AND I DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS OIL EVERYWHERE. WHEN A PASSERBY STOPPED HE SHOWED ME A HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. WHEN THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER AND EXAMINED, THEY OBSERVED THAT THE ENGINE HAD THROWN THE #4 ROD. SINCE THE CAR WAS 2,000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY, AS A "GOOD WILL" GESTURE TOYOTA AGREED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, BUT I WAS STUCK WITH LABOR ESTIMATED AT AROUND $1,500. I HAVE WRITTEN TO TOYOTA AND ASKED THEM TO PAY FOR LABOR ALSO, BUT THEY HAVEN'T MADE A FINAL DETERMINATION AS OF YET. THE ROAD I WAS TRAVELLING ON LESS THAN 10 MIN BEFORE THE INCIDENT OCCURED (THE PA TURNPIKE) WAS HILLLY, CURVEY AND CROWDED. IF THE ENGINE HAD BLOWN ON THAT HIGHWAY AN ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE ENSUED DUE TO THE LARGE VOLUME OF TRAFFIC AND ABSENCE OF ADEQUATE SHOULDER SPACE. I PURCHASED A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY CE (VIN # 4T1BG22KOYU962183) WITH A 4 CYLINDER ENGINE, 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN FEBRUARY OF 2000. FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2004 AROUND 6:15AM I WAS DRIVING THIS CAR TO WORK ON RTE 495 SOUTH IN HUDSON, MASS. WITHOUT WARNING, I HEARD A POP UNDER THE HOOD AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION. WHITE SMOKE WAS POURING OUT THE REAR AND DARK SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I WAS DRIVING 65 MPH DOWN A STEEP GRADE, IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I QUICKLY BEGAN PULL INTO THE BRAKE DOWN LANE. I APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS ALSO TO THE FLOOR. I SLOWLY APPLIED THE PARKING BRAKE AND MANAGED TO GET THE CAR STOPPED. I HAD FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND SMOKE COMING INTO THE DRIVERS COMPARTMENT. THE TRAFFIC THAT WAS BEING BLINDED BY THE SMOKE AND THE ROAD HAD GUARDRAILS SO I COULD NOT PULL COMPLETELY OFF THE ROAD. I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT GETTING OUT OF THE CAR INTO TRAFFIC BUT I HAD TO GET OUT QUICKLY. I GOT AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CALLED THE AUTHORITIES. BY THE TIME THE FIRE TRUCKS ARRIVED THE FRONT OF THE CAMRY WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. WHAT OCCURRED THAT MORNING HIT ME LATER. I REALIZED THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. THANKFULLY I DID NOT PANIC AND CAUSE A BAD SITUATION TO BE WORSE. I THOUGHT WHAT IF SOMEONE ELSE HAD BEEN DRIVING THIS CAR, MY PREGNANT DAUGHTER OR MY WIFE. WHAT IF A FAMILY WITH A CHILD IN A CAR SEAT, A NEW YOUNGER DRIVER OR AN ELDERLY PERSON WAS DRIVING? UPON SLOWING DOWN TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY, THERE WAS A LOUD BANG FROM THE ENGINE. THE CONSUMER PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER. THEN SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND FLAMES WERE UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CONTACTED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. ANOTHER VEHICLE CUT IN FRONT OF ME AND SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES, I ALSO APPLIED MY BRAKES. THE BRAKES DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE AND I HIT THE HIGHWAY DIVIDER. THE REAR HUB ASSEMBLY BROKE OFF AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT. THE FRONT LEFT QUARTER PANEL WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED. I HAVE REPORTED THE BRAKE PROBLEMS MULTIPLE TIMES TO THE DEALER AND EACH TIME WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKES ARE "IN SPEC". HOWEVER, ANOTHER REPAIR FACILITY FOUND THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER PUSH ROD WAS TOO LONG CAUSING EXCESSIVE PRESSURE REQUIRED TO STOP THE CAR.*AK
