I do not feel engine braking effect when I apply brake instead I have to press brake hard to hold until engine idles. It is a serious issue in older cars. My car has 153000 miles.
Problem: Unintended Acceleration, air conditioner operating. Incident Scenario: Approaching driveway, stopped to allow pedestrian to pass. Resumed low speed turn into driveway, Abrupt acceleration of vehicle, launching vehicle over granite curb and into nearby tree. Damage: Passenger R.Front Fender, Passenger Headlamp Assy;Lower Control Arm Assy, Front Bumper cover, Passenger wheel rim bent, tire deflated. Unintended vehicle acceleration is a serious safety defect and can occur when the Idle Air Control Valve is defective or is provided incorrect engine rpm signal from Engine Control Computer causing sudden vehicle acceleration.
The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving at 25 MPH, she heard an abnormal sound emanating from the engine compartment, after which the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
After an alignment my steering wheel is not straight. If held straight, the car goes off the road to the right. Took it back, now it goes off to the left. Sitting still the steering wheel will turn 360 degrees around and hangs in spots when turning it back.
Air bag light is on and won’t go off. Toyota service department said the sensor was discontinued no longer available to make the repair.

I WAS EXCITING A FREEWAY. AS I USUALLY DO, I DISENGAGED THE CLUTCH EXPECTING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO ALSO DISENGAGE AND COAST TO THE STOP SIGN WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF MY BRAKE. INSTEAD, AS SOON AS I DISENGAGED THE CLUTCH, THE CAR ACCELERATED AS IF SOMEONE HAD PUT THEIR FOOT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKE HAD NO IMPACT TO SLOW THE ACCELERATION. I TURNED THE KEY OFF, HOPING THAT WOULD HELP - BUT THE MOMENTUM CARRIED ME FORWARD AT A GREAT SPEED. I MANAGED TO DODGE SOME CARS AND HEADED (AND LANDED) IN A DITCH ACROSS FROM THE STOP AT THE END OF THE EXIT.. THE ONLY POSSIBLE WARNING THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS MIGHT HAPPEN IS THAT I HAD EXPERIENCED SOME TROUBLE WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL GOING OFF COMPLETELY - AND HAVING TO RE-SET WHILE DRIVING. I HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH ACCELERATION PROBLEMS.

DUE, TO THE FACT THAT MY CAR HAD MADE A FULL STOP PREVIOUSLY WITHOUT ANY DAMAGES WARNING ANOTHER DRIVER AND OTHER WITNESS PRIVOUSLY. FOR EXAMPLE, MY 2001 TOYOTA SOLAR WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE ON THE RIGHT SIDE SLOW LANE THAT, YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO SIGNAL FOR WORKERS OR OTHER DRIVERS YET THAT IS GOING FASTER. TO INCLUDE, WHO MAY BE AT A RUSH. ALSO MOST OF THE TIME THE LEFT LANE IS FOR LIKE, CARPOOL AND SUCH ON. [XXX] WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED THAT WAS UNCONTROLLABLE PLUS THAT'S OVIOUSLY THAT CAUSED THE COLLIONS. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE LEFT SHOULDER AND HEAD THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOW LOT. MY AIR BAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON, ON MY DASH FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS NOW. I SEE NO RECALLS, BUT RESEARCHED IT. LOOKS LIKE MY AIRBAGS AREN'T WORKING PROPERLY.
VEHICLE 'RACES' OUT OF CONTROL WHILE STATIONARY AND IN GEAR, BOTH IN GARAGE AND OUTSIDE OF GARAGE PREPARING TO ENTER. SOLUTION: STEP ON BRAKE ON HARD AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT COLLISION AND TURN OFF IGNITION. ENGINE NO LONGER 'RACES' WHEN IGNITION IS TURNED ON AGAIN. 3 OCCURRENCES IN PAST 12 MONTHS. NO FURTHER DOCUMENTATION. SPOUSE WAS PRESENT ON ONE OCCASION.
THIS IS NOT A TAKAMA RECALL COMPLAIN. IT IS REGARDING MY CAR THAT HAS BEEN ID' THAT IT IS 2000 YEAR MAKE CAR, THE LOCAL DMV DID MADE AN INSPECTION AND CONCLUSION WAS THAT IS IT 2000 - DUE TO SOME STICKERS EVERYWHERE - ON THE DOOR, ON THE HOOD OF THE CAR AND OTHER PLACES.
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM THE DR. S AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS MAKING THIS LOUD NOISE AND THE PEDAL WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR BUT IT HAD A CRUNCHY NOISE AND I KNEW THAT THE BRAKES WERE NOT THE SAME WHEN I LEFT MY HOUSE. I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID WAS LOW AND I HAD TO GO BUY DOT 3 AND PUT IT IN THE MASTER CYLINDER. I KEPT DRIVING IT UNTIL I COULD FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS AN WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A BRAKE BOOSTER, BUT THE CAR ONLY HAS 87,546 MILE'S ON IT.
TWO DAYS BACK WHEN I WAS TRYING TO TAKE MY CAR OUT I HEARD SOME DIFFERENT SOUND.. THEN I STOPPED CAR AND OBSERVED THAT IT IS FLAT TIRE.. I TOOK THE TIRE OUT AND OBSERVED THAT THE TIRE GOT CUT BECAUSE THE SHOCK COIL SPRING GOT BROKEN INTO TWO AND THE SHARP EDGE OF THE SPRING IS CUTTING THE TIRE.. LUCKILY IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY .. A DAY BEFORE THAT I VISITED SANT CRUZ WITH FAMILY ( WIFE AND TWO KIDS ).. IF IT WAS, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN HELPLESS SITUATION.. I REPLACED ALL THE STRUTS AND SHOCKS ON NEXT DAY BY TOWING THE VEHICLE. TIRE HAS MORE THAN THREE CUTS.. I AM NOT SURE FROM HOW LONG THE SHARP EDGE SPRING WAS TOUCHING THE TIRE.
THE SEAT BELTS DON'T BUCKLE IN THE LATCH. ALL FIVE BUCKLE NOT WORKING.

DOOR LATCHES GET STUCK CLOSED. IT SEEMS THE PLASTIC AROUND THE LATCH IS THE CAUSE.

THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED AND STALLED, I STEERED IT TO THE ROADSIDE TO CALL FOR A TOW. SPEAKING WITH INSURANCE TOW SERVICE THE CAR STARTED TO SMOKE FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE UNDER THE HOOD. AS I SUPPLIED INFORMATION THE SMOKE VOLUME INCREASED FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE UNDER THE HOOD. SMOKE VOLUME CONTINUED TO INCREASE AND A CRACKLING/BURNING SOUND STARTED. I TOLD THE AGENT I HAVE TO GO AND CALLED 911. I SUPPLIED DETAILS OF THE AREA WHERE THE INCREASING SMOKE WAS COMING FROM, THE CAR LOCATION AND MY STATUS. IN THE CAR I PULLED THE HOOD LEVER, WENT OUTSIDE AND STOPPED SHORT OF OPENING THE HOOD. REALIZING I HAD NO MEANS TO PUT OUT THE INCREASING FIRE I HAD TO WATCH MY CAR BURN UNTIL FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THIS CAR , AND I HAVE LOVED IT UNTIL THE DAY THE ACCELERATOR DIDN'T WORK. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MOUNTAIN, NOT USING THE ACCELERATOR UNTIL I REACHED THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE PEDAL WOULD NOT MOVE. I COASTED INTO THE NEAREST TURNOFF. THE CAR WAS RUNNING , I PUT IT INTO" PARK", WHILE STILL RUNNING I CHECKED TO SEE IF THERE WAS SOMETHING (FLOORMATS) BLOCKING THE PEDAL. THERE WAS NOTHING. I TRIED MASHING IT AS HARD AS I COULD, NO MOVEMENT. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED. THE PEDAL WAS OK, ACCELERATED JUST FINE. I BELIEVE I REBOOTED THE COMPUTER. I CAREFULLY DROVE TO MY MECHANIC, HE CHECKED THE "PLATES" AND OTHER POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE , THEY ADVISED TAKING IT TO THE NEAREST DEALER. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST BUT I COULD BRING IT IN TO BE CHECKED. I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR THAT DISTANCE OVER 200 MILES ROUNDTRIP. I LATER RECEIVED A SMALL CHECK FROM "TOYOTA ECONOMIC LOSS SETTLEMENT ADMINISTRATOR " FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT. I DID NOT CASH IT. I WAS ADVISED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SELL IT BUT ETHICALLY CAN NOT BECAUSE I DON'T WANT SOMEBODY KILLED OR INJURED IN IT. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AT THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND A SOLUTION. BUT THEY CLAIM THIS PROBLEM COULDN'T HAPPEN AND WERE NOT HELPFUL. IT COULD BE SOLD TO A JUNK YARD AT A LOSS BUT AGAIN, IT COULD BE SOLD FROM THERE AND DRIVEN. ANY ADVICE?

THE CONTACT SUFFERED FROM STRAINED CHEST MUSCLES AND CRACKED RIBS, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 178,000.
A WOMAN PULLED OUT OF A SIDE ROAD AND WAS ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF ME AND I HAD NO WHERE TO GO SO I HIT HER IN BACK OF HER TRUCK. I HAD NO WHERE TO GO. SHE PULLED OUT FAST AND THEN SLOWED DOWN. WHEN I HIT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF AND I WAS WONDERING WHY. *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED ON, BLACK SMOKE EMITTED FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE WAS CONTAMINATED WITH OIL SLUDGE. AS A RESULT, THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,000.

THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND SANK TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND CRASHED INTO A SNOW BANK. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS 160,000.
MY CAR WAS STRUCK ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, BY A DRIVER THAT WENT INTO OUR LANE, RUNNING MY CAR OFF THE ROAD, WHICH CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO GO UP OVER CURB AND HEAD ON INTO A BRICK WALL. THE AIRBAG NEVER DEPLOYED FROM THE IMPACT OF BEING HIT AND CRASHING STRAIGHT INTO A BRICK WALL. I WAS INSTRUCTED THAT I NEED TO REPORT THIS AND FIND OUT IF THE AIRBAG IS FAULTY. MY CAR IS REPORTED TOTALED BY INSURANCE COMPANY. I HAVE PICTURES FROM THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT TO SHOW HOW THE CAR WENT INTO THE BRICK WALL AND NO AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED. *TR

I WAS HIT BY A SPEEDING DRIVER IN CROSS TRAFFIC. (A LOT OF PEOPLE A RUNNING THROUGH RED LIGHTS!) MY SEAT BELT DID NOT STOP ME FROM BEING THROWN FORWARD AND THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY, CAUSING MY HEAD TO HIT THE WINDSHIELD, BREAKING THE GLASS. I RECEIVED MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR MY HEAD INJURY. JUST WITHIN THE LAST MONTH, I HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY GETTING THE DRIVER SEAT BELT TO CLASP. IT TAKE A FEW TRIES, BUT FINALLY DOES. BUT, IT DOE NOT SEEM SECURE AND I AM AFRAID THAT IT MAY BECOME UNCLAPSED WHILE DRIVING. IN THE PAST IT ALWAYS WORKED FINE AND THE CLASP SEEMED MUCH MORE SECURE. I JUST STARTED THE ENGINE AND READY TO GO HOME WHEN I TRIED MY SEAT BELT, IT WILL NOT LATCH. AFTER SO MANY TRIES IT FINALLY WORK AFTER HAVING TO DEPRESS THE RED BUTTON PART OF THE SEAT BELT LATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN. IT HAPPENED AGAIN YESTERDAY 10/31/2014. *TR

I USED THE DATE OF 2/23/2013 BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN THE PROBLEM BECAME FULL BLOWN BUT ABOUT 2 MONTHS BEFORE THAT DATE THE CAR BEGAN SURGE WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN GEAR AFTER BEING PARKED AND WHILE AT A STOP SIGN. IT SOUNDED THEN AND STILL SOUNDS LIKE A FLY WHEEL OR SOMETHING UNDER THE HOOD IS RUNNING AT A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED. IF I HAD NOT HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE IT FELT AS THOUGH I WOULD HAVE GONE FORWARD INTO THE CAR AHEAD OF ME. FINALLY ON 2/23/2013 THE CAR STARTED SURGING AND THEN HESITATING NON-STOP. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND BEGAN TO BLINK SO I CREPT BACK HOME WITH FEAR. WHEN THE CAR HESITATES IT FEELS AS THOUGH IT LOSES POWER AND THERE'S A BACKFIRING SOUND IN THE REAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO AAA, THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC ON THE COMPUTER AND I HAD THE IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUGS CHANGED BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THE SURGING AND HESITATION HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN GEAR (BOTH DRIVE AND REVERSE) BUT NOT IN NEUTRAL OR PARK AND IT IS CONSTANT. I HAVE A FEAR THAT EITHER THE CAR WILL SURGE AHEAD WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND I WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR BE KILLED BECAUSE THE CAR MAY JUST COMPLETELY STOP. SYMPTOMS: 1. REAR LIGHTS OFF WARNING COMES ON THE DASHBOARD 2. CHECK WARNING LIGHT COMES ON WITH CODE 1780. (NEUTRAL SWITCH ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS A PROBLEM) 3. NO BRAKE LIGHTS OR REVERSE LIGHT ON IN THE TRUNK AREA ONLY WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. 4. BRAKES VIBRATE WHEN SLOWING DOWN AROUND 10MPH TO STOP LIKE YOUR TIRES ARE RIDING A VERY ROUGH SURFACES. 5. REVERSE LIGHT COMES ON IN THE SHIFT GEAR INDICATOR WHEN APPLYING BRAKES TO SHIFT FROM PARK POSITION. INITIAL ATTEMPT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM: CHANGING THE REVERSE LIGHT BULBS AND BRAKE LIGHT BULBS, BUT PROBLEMS CONTINUE TO REMAIN AS DESCRIBE IN THE SYMPTOMS. 2ND ATTEMPT BY MIKE GERBER FROM WEBSITE WWW:\\AUTOMOTIVEFORUMS.COM. HE REPORTED THERE IS A LOOSE WIRES CONNECTION OR FRAYED WIRES AT THE HINGE OF THE TRUNK ON THE DRIVER SIDE. AFTER CAREFUL INSPECTION ON THE WIRE HARNESS AT THE HINGE CONNECTION OF THE TRUNK, DISCOVERED AT LEAST ONE WIRE THAT WAS ABOUT THE BREAK OFF FROM OPENING AND CLOSING THE TRUNK OF THE CAR FOR MANY YEARS. AFTER FIXING THESE WIRES, ALL THE SYMPTOMS WERE RESOLVED. AMAZING!!! COULDN'T HAVE SOLVED THIS PROBLEM SO FAST WITHOUT THE READING THE ARTICLE FROM MIKE GERBER. THANKS!!!!!
