THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE BLEW, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A CEMENT PILLAR AND WAS THROWN TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE BEFORE CRASHING INTO A SECOND CEMENT PILLAR. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION AND WHIPLASH. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED CHEST INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED AND WAS DESTROYED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

A SPARE TIRE WAS INSTALLED AS A REPLACEMENT. APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH LATER, THE SAME FAILURE OCCURRED ON THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURES DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE ON THE TIRES WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000. ON 9/24/08 I WENT TO TOWN FAIR TIRE AND HAD FOUR TIRES REPLACED AT A COST OR $539.12. I WAS TOLD YOKOHAMA TIRES WERE THE BEST AND HAD THE BEST MILEAGE UP TO 80,000 MILES. AT THAT TIME I HAD THE FOUR TIRES REPLACED WITH THE MILEAGE ON MY CAR AT 74,000 MILES. ON 6/3/09 I BROUGHT MY CAR WHICH NOW HAD 81,000 MLS. ON IT WITH A BUBBLE ON MY TIRE AND HAD TO REPLACE IT AT A CA COST OF $134.51. FIVE MONTHS LATER ON 11/02/09 I WENT BACK TO TOWN FAIR TIRE WITH 83,000 MILES ON MY CAR AND ANOTHER BUBBLE ON MY TIRE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR FORTY TWO YEARS AND NEVER HAD A BUBBLE ON A TIRE AND IN A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AND LESS THAN 10,000 MILES I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE TWO OF THESE TIRES BECAUSE OF BUBBLES. TOWN FAIR TIRE SAYS ITS MY DRIVING, I SAY THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE TIRES AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN MY CAR. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THEM AGAIN. I AM ON DISABILITY AND DO NOT DRIVE TO OFTEN BUT I LIKE TO FEEL SAFE WHEN I DO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY THAT I BOUGHT NEW.AT PRESENT THE CAR HAS JUST 20,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE CAR CAME EQUIPPED WITH GENERAL HP 400 A/S TIRES. AT PRESENT THE TIRES HAVE APPROXIMATELY 3/16 TREAD DEPTH.MY COMPLAINTS ARE: 1. WHILE DRIVING ON A WET BLACKTOP ROAD AT ABOUT 30 MPH , I GENTLY APPLIED THE BRAKES FOR A CHANGING TRAFFIC SIGNAL.AT THAT TIME THE TIRES LOST TRACTION AND THE CAR SLID INTO THE INTERSECTION. PREMATURE TIRE FAILLURE. I RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE MY TIRES ON A 2001 TOYOTA CAMARY. THE CAR HAS 47000 MILES ON IT. THE TIRE DEALER INDICATED THAT HE HAD EXPERIENCED THSI PROBLEM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. OTHER CUSTOMERS HAD SIMILAR COMPLAINTS INVOLVING SEVERAL BRANDS OF TIRES. HE INDICATED THAT THERE WAS PREMATURE OUTER EDGE WEAR INDICATING A POSSIBLE SPECIFICATION PROBLEM.
THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL OF OUR 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY SUDDENLY CAME OFF FROM THE AXEL WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (AROUND 65 MPH). THIS HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE 78 HIGHWAY IN PA. THIS LEAD TO CAR SINKING TO THE LEFT AND HITTING THE GUARD RAIL, THEN SPNNING ACROSS THE HIGHWAY, HITTING THE OTHER GUARD RAIL. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. PEOPLE WERE INJURED, ONE PERSON AT THE BACK SEAT HAD HEAD INJURY, ONE HAS HAD CHRONIC NECK PROBLEMS SINCE THEN, OTHERS KEEP HAVING NECK TROUBLES OFF AND ON. THE WHEEL JUMPED THE MEDIAN AND FLEW OFF TO THE OTHERSIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE COMING OFF OF THE WHEEL WAS SUDDEN, GIVING NO TIME TO THE DRIVER TO DO ANYTHING TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE CAR ONLY HAD ROUGHLY 55,000 MILES ON IT AND WE HAD GOTTEN AN OIL CHANGE AND MULTIPOINT INSPECTION SERVICE ON THE CAR ABOUT 1000 MILES BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. THERE WAS NO AXEL RELATED PROBLEM INDICATED IN THE SERVICE. THAT SERVICE WAS DONE BY A TOYOTA DEALER. THE ACCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO OTHER VEHICLE AROUND US ON THE HIGHWAY OR THE WHEEL COMING OFF WOULD HAVE HAD FATAL RESULTS.*AK
TIRES SKIDED ON WET ROAD AND WHEN CHECKED I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE ONE OR MORE OF THE TIRES. I ROTATE MY TIRES EVERY 5,000 MILES AND HAVE HAD THEM BALANCED AT LEAST ONE TIME. THESE ARE THE ORIGINAL TIRES SHIPPED WITH THE VEHICLE. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY WOULD FAIL IN LESS THAN 30,000 MILES.

I HAVE A SAFETY CONCERN WITH MY 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY PURCHASED THROUGH IRA TOYOTA IN DANVERS MASS. THE TIRES PULLED TO RHE LEFT AND SQUEALED GOING AROUND CORNERS. I KEPT CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE TO SEE IF THAT WAS THE CAUSE, NO. IN OCTOBER I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE THE TIRES ROTATED AT DUBE TOYOTA IN DOVER, NH. THE CAR HAD A LITTLE OVER 19,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS ASKED INTO THE SERVICE AREA TO LOOK AT THE TIRES BECAUSE THEY WERE VERY WORN. THE FRONT TIRES WERE VERY WORN ON BOTH THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE EDGES, THE CORDING WAS VISIBLE. THE REAR TIRES WERE WORN EVENLY. STARTED THE COMPLAINT PROCESS WITH IRA TOYOTA. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT BILL DUBE TALKED WITH THE DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE ABOUT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IN REPLACING THE TIRES. I REPLACED THE FRONT TIRES IMMEDIATELY. HAD ALIGNMENT CHECKED. CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SPOKE WITH CHRISTINA WOODS WHO INITIATED MY CLAIM/COMPLAINT I CALLED AGAIN AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND SPOKE TO ANOTHER PERSON, WAS TOLD TO SEND IN ALL MY WORK ORDERS/PAID RECEIPTS AND THEY WOULD REIMBURSE US FOR FOUR NEW TIRES AND THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT. I HAD THE REAR TIRES REPLACED. DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE SAID HE COULD REIMBURSE US FOR TWO TIRES. WHEN HE WAS INFORMED THAT TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID THEY WOULD PAY FOR ALL FOUR HE APPARENTLY BECAME LIVID, CALLED TOYOTA TO COMPLAIN BECAUSE THEY HAD USURPED HIS AUTHORITY. NEITHER PARTY WILL NOW REIMBURSE US FOR ANY TIRES. MY CONCERN AT THIS TIME IS THE SAFETY ISSUE. DURING MANY CONVERSATIONS WITH TOYOTA AND THE DEALER THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH CAMRYS. THE TIRES ARE MANUFACTURED WITH VERY SOFT SIDEWALLS (REASON FOR THE SQUEALING) TO IMPROVE RIDE. THE SIDEWALLS COLLAPSE ON CORNERS CAUSING EXCESSIVE WEAR, ESPECIALLY ON THE EDGES. IF THEY ARE NOW USING INFERIOR TIRES WHERE ELSE HAVE THEY CUT CORNERS OR USED INFERIOR MATERIAL THAT MIGHT WELL AFFECT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. TRYING TO WARN EVERYONE I CAN ABOUT THE POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEMS.

CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD PROBLEMS KEEPING AIR IN TIRES, UNTIL FINALLY ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING THERE WAS A SLIGHT THUMPING NOISE, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN INTO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE TIRES CHECKED AND THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS LOW, THE TIRES WERE THEN ROTATED AND BALANCED, CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE TIRES WERE VERY WORN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TIRE IS LOW-PROFILE DESIGN STANDARD ON PRIUS. EXPLOSIVE SEPARATION OCCURRED ON DRY ROADWAY WITHOUT DEBRIS. OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE WAS APPROXIMATELY 78 DEGREES. THANK GOODNESS THAT THE TIRE WAS ON THE REAR. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO INITIATE A CONTROLLED STOP FROM THE NUMBER ONE LANE TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE SEPARATION CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE LEFT REAR QUARTER-PANEL, THE ALLOY RIM AND OF COURSE THE TIRE. BRIDGESTONE CUSTOMER CARE WAS CONTACTED AT 800-847-3272 AND I WAS ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD SEND A CLAIM PACKAGE WITHIN 5 DAYS. THERE IS NO REFERENCE NUMBER ASSIGNED. THEY INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD PAY FOR REPAIRS. SERIAL NUMBER FOR ALL 4 TIRES IS: CHA3700. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS LOT OF TIRES IS ON ALL OF THE PRIUS VEHICLES SITTING AT THE LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA STORAGE FACILITY. THE TIRE PRESSURE ON THE VEHICLE WAS CHECKED THE DAY BEFORE THE INCIDENT AND ALL TIRES WERE INFLATED ACCORDING TO SPECIFICATIONS. *AK (DOT NUMBER: EL9P TIRESIZE: P17565 R14)
