2002 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE - ENGINE SURGE UNEXPECTED ACCELERATON I HAVE BEEN OPERATING THIS VEHICLE FOR TWO YEARS WITHOUT INCIDENT. HOWEVER, IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE ENGINE SURGE/RACING PROBLEM. THE FIRST EPISODE TOOK PLACE 2 MONTHS AGO AS I WAS IN REVERSE AND BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY; I WAS ABLE TO STOP BY APPLYING THE BRAKES. THE SECOND INCIDENT TOOK PLACE AS I WAS BEGINNING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP LIGHT; THE VEHICLES AHEAD OF ME WERE SLOWING DOWN AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RACE. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR WITH THE BRAKES BUT DID LIGHTLY HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO EITHER VEHICLE OR ANY INJURIES. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY DEALER THIS MORNING AND REPORTED THE INCIDENTS. THE DEALERSHIP TEST DROVE THE CAR AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM . I DID HAVE PASSENGER IN CAR DURING THE MOST RECENT EPISODE WHO CAN ATTEST TO THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHEN DRIVING AT AN UNDETERMINED SPEED VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. *AK
WHILE WAITING AT AN INTERSECTION VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. DRIVER'S FOOT WAS PLACED ON THE BRAKE AT THIS TIME OF THE INCIDENT. DRIVER TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE ,AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART, AND DRIVE IT TO THE TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE OR RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 5 MPH VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. *AK
CONSUMER WILL PROVIDE DETAILS INFORMATION ON THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE PARKING VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND HIT TWO PARKED VEHICLES IN THE PARKING LOT. DEALERSHIP WAS CONTACTED.*AK SEE 10080050. *DSY
WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH AND PULLING INSIDE OF A PARKING LOT VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE BY APPLYING THE BRAKES. CONSUMER CONTACTED A DEALER BY PHONE, AND TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE. *AK *LA
WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE SURGED UNCONTROLLABLY, AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A FENCE. NO REPORT OF INJURIES. *AK *JB
02/23/04, DEALER'S INVOICE TOCS12154: 04/19/04, DEALER'S INVOICE TOCS14794. THE CD AND TAPE PLAYER WENT BAD BEFORE THE CAR WAS TWO YEARS OLD. I DID NOT DISCOVER THIS UNTIL THERE WAS 37,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 35,000 MILES. THE CD/TAPE PLAYER PART OF THE RADIO WAS NOT EVEN USED FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, SO I WAS NOT AWARE THERE WAS A PROBLEM UNTIL AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. THE DEALER CHARGED ME $250.00 FOR A "USED" RADIO THEY ORDERED FROM THE MANUFACTURER (A NEW RADIO WAS GOING TO COST $850.00). THEY WERE KIND ENOUGH TO NOT CHARGE ME FOR THE INSTALLATION. SINCE TOYOTA DOES NOT MAKE THE RADIOS INSTALLED IN THEIR VEHICLES, TOYOTA WOULD NOT HELP ME WITH MY PROBLEM. 03-08-04, DEALER'S INVOICE TOCS12900:I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM THAT CONCERNS ME MORE THAN THE RADIO MALFUNCTION. THERE IS A VIABRATION WHEN I SLOW DOWN TO STOP THE CAR. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THIS CHECKED. THEY RECOMMENDED THAT THE FRONT ROTORS BE TURNED (FOR $170.00) AND THAT THE REAR BRAKE DRUMS BE RESURFACED (FOR $127.50) BY THE TIME THE DEALER CHECKED THIS FOR ME, THE CAR HAD 38,363 MILES. THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 35,000 MILES! NEITHER THE DEALER NOR TOYOTA WILL DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE BRAKES. THEY CONSIDERED IT TO BE "NORMAL" WEAR AN TEAR. I HAVE NEVER HAD A RADIO GO BAD IN ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE OWNED. MY SUBARU IMPREZZA IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD! THE IMPREZZE STILL HAD ITS ORIGINAL BRAKES!*AK
DRIVER SIDE WINDOW DID NOT ROLL SMOOTHLY. SQUEAKED BUT WAS ONLY FIXED AFTER TAKING THE CAR A DEALER A THIRD TIME. SPUTTERING/RATTLING SOUND SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHEN THE CAR IS IDLE OR UPON COLD START. SOUND GETS PROGRESSIVELY LOUDER. DEALER CLAIMS THAT NO SOUNDS WERE HEARD. CAR ALSO HESITATES WHEN RESPONDING TO ACCELERATION. IN RESEARCHING FOR ANSWERS, I FOUND THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG HAS A RECALL. I WAS IN DISBELIEF WHEN I FOUND THAT NO EFFORTS WERE MADE IN CONTACTING ME ABOUT AN AIRBAG RECALL! I FEEL UTTERLY DISAPPOINTED. I'D COME FROM A "HONDA" FAMILY AND DECIDED TO GIVE TOYOTA A TRY. I HAVE LEARNT MY LESSON NOW THAT BUYING A BRAND NEW TOYOTA MEANS HAVING TO CHECK UP ON RECALLS AND PROBLEMS.*AK
WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, AND IT LANDED ON THE HOOD OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. *AK CONSUMER ALSO STATED THAT APPLYING THE BRAKES DIDN'T HELP STOP THE VEHICLE. *LA
AT JUST OVER 17,000 MILES ON THE SPEDOMETER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALERSHIP, WHICH INFORMED ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A SHIFT SOLENOID. UPON REPLACING THE SHIFT SOLENOID, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM MAY BE THE TORQUE CONVERTER ON THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THE TECHNICAL EXPERT WAS CONTACTING TOYOTA BECUASE HE COULD NOT DEFINITIVELY PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. I ENQUIRED WHETHER THE PROBLEM COULD BE RELATED TO THE CURRENT INVESTIGATION OF THE THROTTLE VALVE ON 2002 SOLARA'S AND COULD NOT GET A STRAIGHT ANSWER FROM THE SERVICE MANAGER. IN THE MEANTIME, I HAD BEEN TOLD THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVABLE WHEN THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO BE THE SHIFT SOLENOID SO I HAD BEEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A WEEK WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, ASSURED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE PROBLEM HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DRIVABILITY OF THE VEHICLE. UPON DISCOVERING THE PROBLEM MAY BE RELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION, THEY INSISTED ON KEEPING THE VEHICLE, AND HAVE BEEN "RUNNING TESTS" ON IT SINCE YESTERDAY, WITH STILL NO ANSWER AS TO THE EXACT PROBLEM. MEANWHLE, I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE.*AK
WHILE SITTING AT A RED LIGHT WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON THE CAR SURGED FORWARD. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, ALTHOUGH NO INJURIES OR WRECKS HAVE STEMMED FROM ANY OF THIS INCIDENTS. ALSO WHEN I PUT THE CARE IN DRIVE FROM REVERSE SOMETIMES THE CAR SURGES FORWARD WITHOUT APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR.*AK
DRIVER WAS SITTING AT A CAR WASH WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD STRAIGHT THROUGH THE CAR WASH DOOR OPENING. NO ONE WAS INJURED. NO PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED. THE DRIVER SAYS THE VEHICLE HIT A SNOW BANK.*AK
1992 TOYOTA CAMRY WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAD TO PUSH THE SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE BUTTON TO GET THE GEARS TO WORK. WHILE DRIVING ON A 4 LANE ROAD, WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, THE CONSUMER CAME UPON A RED LIGHT WITH CARS STOPPED. HE TOUCHED THE BRAKES TO DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE, BUT INSTEAD THE ENGINE REVVED UP. THE HARDER HE PUSHED THE BRAKES THE FASTER THE ENGINE RAN. HE FINALLY PUSHED THE CRUISE BUTTON ON THE STALK AND THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER CONTROL. THE DEALER FOUND THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH HAD AN OPEN CIRCUIT. *JB
WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH, I PLACED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN A BIT. THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN, INSTEAD IT SPEED UP TO ABOUT 75 MPH. I HIT THE BRAKES HARDER, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP. *AK I QUICKLY PULLED ON THE HAND BRAKE AND SHIFTED THE GEAR TO PARK, THEN SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I HADE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO MAKE A REPAIR. I HAVE ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA.
2002 TOYOTA CAMRY BRAKE FAILURE. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES AN HOUR WHEN A CAR ENTERED THE LANE TWO CARS AHEAD OF ME. AS THEY STEPPED ON THEIR BRAKES, I ALSO DID. ONLY MY BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE PROPERLY AND THE CAR STARTED TO SKID OUT OF CONTROL. THE CONDITIONS WERE DRY. I WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER CAR - CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO MY RIGHT FRONT SECTION OF THE CAR. I CALLED THE TOYOTA BODY SHOP TODAY WHO TOLD ME THAT THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM IN THE ABS SYSTEM. I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN UNTIL I AM ABSOLUTELY SURE THEY DISCOVER WHY MY BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE. *AK
VEHICLE HAS A VERY LOW BRAKE PEDAL, WHEN APPLIED IT STOPPED BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. *LA THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE BRAKES WERE NORMAL. THE DRUMS WERE CLEANED. HOWEVER THAT DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. WHILE PARKED VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND ENGINE ROARED AND SURGED FORWARD. CONSUMER HAD TO USE EXTREME FORCE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING. ALSO, WHEN AIR CONDITIONER WAS ON AND TURNED OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN THERE WAS A FOUL ODOR COMING FROM THE VENTS. *AK
I'M VERY CONCERN ABOUT MY 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA VIN#[XXX] SINCE I NOTICED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS 02/18/04 BEING THE MOST RECENT ONE OF SOMETHING THAT CAUSES SUDDEN ACCELERATION EVEN WHEN IT READS SOMETHING DIFFERENT ON THE SPEEDOMETER. WHILE MAKING A TURN FROM A STOP SIGN, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL DESCENDED TO MORE THAN THE DRIVER HAD DEPRESSED, WHICH CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SUBSEQUENTLY HITTING A PALM TREE HEAD ON. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED INJURIES. ANN SAALBACH'S DAUGHTER CALERIE SAALBACH ISSUED THIS INFORMATION. PLEASE PROVIDE DETAILS.
WHILE WAITING AT A STOP SIGN CONSUMER PRESSED THE BRAKES AND VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. CONSUMER CONTINUED TO PRESS THE BRAKES AND APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SURGE FORWARD, EVENTUALLY COLLIDING WITH A SNOW BANK. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, AND NO POLICE REPORT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY. ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004 ON, THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER WERE BOTH INJURED. THE SPEED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED WAS 30 MPH. THE POLICE RESPONDED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. AN AMBULANCE REPORT IS ALSO AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AFTER THE CRASH OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO REPAIR FACILITY WHERE IT WAS REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS REAR ENDED AND PUSHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, DUAL AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, AND SEAT BELTS FAILED TO RESTRAIN THE OCCUPANT. (IN REFERENCE TO YOUR OPEN INVESTIGATION PE04021) I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY, RECENTLY I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP (15,000 MILES), MY COMPLAINT WAS THAT THE CAR HAS SUDDEN AND SHORT SURGES OF EXCELERATION WHILE AT A FULL STOP. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AVOID ACCIDENT OR INJURY TO OTHERS BY KEEPING MY FOOT COMPLETELY AND FIRMLY DEPRESSED ON THE BRAKE PETAL. THIS SITUATION HAS HAPPENED IN BOTH DRIVE AND REVERSE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT RE-CREATE THE CONDITION. DEALER STATED THAT THEY HAD NO PROCEDURE TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM AND THAT IF IT CONTINUED THEY WOULD HAVE TO CONTRACT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS FOR ADVISE. I REQUESTED THAT THIS BE DOCUMENTED ON THE CARS HISTORY. AFTER HEARING OF THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION, I CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER RELATIONS TO OPEN A CASE TO GET THIS PROBLEM RESOLVE. THE DEALERSHIP CUSTOMER RALATIONS MANAGER (COLLEEN) IS TO CONTACT ME BY THE END OF THE WEEK.
ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS BRAKES FAILED. ON 12/1/2003, WHILE DRIVING UPHILL, BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED, AND CONSUMER'S VEHICLE BUMPED THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. ON 1/27/2004, WHILE DRIVING DOWN HILL, BRAKES FAILED. VEHICLE WENT ONTO A SMALL INCLINE AND SLOWED DOWN, AND BRAKES STARTED TO OPERATE AGAIN. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *AK *MR
WITNESSES SAW MY PARENTS VEHICLE (A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY) COMING TO A STOP AND THEN SUDDENLY ACCELERATE.*AK UPDATED 03/05/10 *BF ACCORDING TO THE POLICE REPORT, THE DRIVER PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE ON THE FOURTH FLOOR, WHEN SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, DROVE OVER THE PARKING CURB, STRUCK THE CONCRETE BARRIER WALL KNOCKING IT OUT. WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE AND PUTTING IT IN REVERSE, THE VEHICLE SURGED BACKWARDS. CONSUMER WAS PREPARING TO BACK OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND PLACED THE GEAR SHIFT IN REVERSE AND THE VEHICLE SURGED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, LANDED ACROSS THE STREET AND COLLIDED WITH THE NEIGHBOR'S AIR CONDITIONING UNIT. EVER SINCE I BROUGHT MY 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE HOME IT VEERED TO THE LEFT. ON EVERY TRIP BACK TO THE DEALER I MENTIONED IT AND EACH TIME I RECEIVED A DIFFERENT REASON FOR THE PROBLEM. AFTER TWO YEARS IT IS NOW TOTALLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I DID AND PAID FOR ALL THE SOLUTIONS THE DEALER MADE AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. FROM WRONG TIRE PRESSURE TO ONE NEW AND OLD TIRE TO TWO NEW TIRES TO A WHEEL ALIGNMENT TO THE FACT THAT I PROBABLY DRIVE OVER BUMPS AND HOLES, THEY HAVE GIVEN MORE EXCUSES THAN ANSWERS. I AM AFRAID I WILL GET INTO A CRASH. THE STEERING WHEEL LITERALLY TURNS LEFT ON ITS OWN AND YOUR CAR SWERVES INTO THE LEFT LANE. *AK
1. LOUD CREAKING AND RATTLES: AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS AT REPAIRS, THE PROBLEM FINALLY TURNED OUT TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THEY LEFT PLASTIC ASSEMBLY GUIDES IN PLACE, WHICH THEY HAD TO REMOVE BY REMOVING THE WINDOW AGAIN (THIS WAS A SUPER SECRET SERVICE BULLETIN THAT WAS DIVULGED ONLY WHEN THE CUSTOMER ENGINEER FOR NEW ENGLAND SHOWED UP). BUT HE DEALERSHIP MANAGED TO CHIP THE PAINT IN THE PROCESS, REQUIRING THE ROOF TO BE REPAINTED. ONCE THE CREAK WAS GONE, THE INTERIOR RATTLES WERE UNBEARABLE FROM ALL THE QUALITY WORK COMPLETED. 2. TRANSMISSION ISSUE: I'VE BEEN ASSURED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER AT ME DEALERSHIP THAT IT IS NORMAL THE TRANSMISSION TAKE AT LEAST A MILE SHIFT OUT OF SECOND GEAR WHEN BELOW 30F AND TO A LESSER DEGREE DURING WARM WEATHER. THE CAR WON'T SHIFT INTO THIRD OR OVERDRIVEN UNTIL AFTER LEAST 1-2 MINUTE OF DRIVING, NO MATTER WHAT SPEED. 3. TRANSMISSION ISSUE: WHEN LIFTING OFF THE THROTTLE FROM 60 TO 55MPH ON A DOWNHILL, THERE'S A "HITCH" OR BUCKING WHERE THE TRANSMISSION ABRUPTLY CATCHES, THEN RELEASES. ALMOST LIKE IT DOWN SHIFTING, BUT IT STOPS HALF WAY. THIS HAS BEEN AN ANNOYING PROBLEM SINCE DAY ONE. THE BUCKING PROBLEM IS ANNOYING AND PROBLEMATIC. IT WAS SOLVED BY RESET THE COMPUTER AND SHOWED UP AGAIN AT 42,000 MILES. THEY ARE BLAMING IT ON THE ADAPTIVE MICRO-PROCESSOR AND MY DRIVING STYLE. (WARRANTY) 4. DOOR RATTLES: DRIVER'S SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE DOORS RATTLE/TICK WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT WAS LET GO ABOUT THE RATTLE, AND HE EXPLAINED IT'S NORMAL FOR NEW CAMRY'S TO HAVE THE DOORS MAKE THAT MAKE NOISE. PROBLEM HAS EXISTED SINCE CAR HAD 10,000 MILES, NOW HAS 36,000 AND DEALER AND TOYOTA CLAIM IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. TOYOTA CLAIMS THAT CAR HAS NO BRAKE PROBLEMS, NO SAFETY PROBLEMS AT ALL, AND THAT ORIGINAL BRAKES ARE NOT DEFECTIVE IN DESIGN. THE FIRST TIME ,MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE ,I SHIFTED OUT OF PARK INTO D , WHEN I LET OFF THE BRAKE ,THE ENGINE RACED PAST 5000 RPMS. THE CAR JUMPED FORWARD ,BUT BECAUSE MY FOOT WAS STILL OVER THE BRAKE PEDAL I ONLY HAD TO PUSHED HARD AS POSSIBLE ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE RACED ON ,THE CAR WAS STRAINING TO COLLIDE WITH THE CAR PARKED IN FRONT OF ME. I SLAMMED THE SHIFTER INTO PARK.THE CAR STOPPED MOVING BUT THE ENGINE WENT TO REDLINE, I TURNED THE CAR OFF.I CHECKED WHICH PEDAL MY FOOT WAS ON AND IT WAS STILL PRESSED FIRMLY ON THE BRAKES. I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON,THE CAR BEHAVED NORMALLY. I THINK WHEN SHIFTING OUT OF PARK THE DRIVE-BY-WIRE COMPUTER IS MALFUNTIONING. RECALL THEM BEFORE SOMEONE DIES AND OR GETS HURT. I THINK TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND HOW TO FIX IT. WHILE DRIVING AT 25 MPH AND ENTERING A TURN LANE CONSUMER PRESSED THE BRAKES AND VEHICLE NEVER SLOWED DOWN. BUT, SURGED FORWARD, AND COLLIDED WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THERE IS A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM. *AK
I WAS IN "REVERSE" AND BACKED INTO A CONCRETE POLE IN MY OFFICE PARKING GARAGE. I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CAR JUMPED INTO "DRIVE," AND RAPIDLY ACCELERATED, AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO MY EFFORTS TO BRAKE. SOMETIME IN OCT. WHILE PULLING OFF OF I-74 ONTO 53RD ST. IN DAVENPORT, IA, WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT WHEN THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED THE CAR SPED UP RATHER THAN SLOWED DOWN. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN TOWARDS THE END OF NOVEMBER WHILE TRAVERSING FROM US-6 ONTO I-80 IN GENESEO. BOTH TIMES I HAD BEEN USING THE CRUSE CONTROL, DISENGAGED IT BY APPLYING THE BRAKE AND AS THE CAR SLOWED DOWN REAPPLICATION OF THE BRAKE CAUSED THE CAR TO SPEED UP. BY TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND THEN REAPPLYING THE BRAKE CAR SLOWED NORMALLY ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF DECEMBER I HAD A MORE SERIOUS INCIDENT WHILE PULLING INTO A CONVIENCE STORE OFF OF WOLF ROAD IN GENESEO. I DIENGAGED THE CRUSE AND PULLED INTO A PARKING PLACE. THE CAR SLOWED NORMALLY AND WAS ALMOST TO A STOP WHEN IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE WHILE THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED. I TURNED THE CAR TO THE RIGHT, AND JUST MISSED THE BUILDING, BUT TOOK OUT A 4X4 SUPPORT FOR THE ROOF OVERHANG. DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO DENTS ON THE CAR AND THE 4X4. NO PERSONAL INJURIES WERE INVOLVED. AFTER THE FIRST OCCURANCE I THOUGHT IT WAS MY MISTAKE, I APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR WHEN I MEANT TO APPLY THE BRAKE. THE SECOND TIME I FELT IT WAS PROBABLY A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR, AND WOULD BRING IT UP WITH TOYOTA NEXT TIME I BROUGHT THE CAR IN. THE THIRD TIME I WAS SURE THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM FOR TOYOTA AND I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE TOYOTA DEALER. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND SAID NEITHER THEY OR THE DISTRICT OFFICE HAD HEARD OF A SIMILAR PROBLEM BEFORE. WE THEN CONTACTED THE TOYOTA OFFICE IN CALIFORNIA, AND THEY TOOK DOWN THE INFORMATION, INFORMING US THIS PROBLEM HAD NOT OCCURED BEFORE. LAST WEEK SCOTT YON OF THE NHTSA CONTACTED US AND ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE THREE OCCURANCES. I OWN A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH BRIDGESTONE TIRES WHICH WERE ON THE CAR WHEN WE PURCHASED IT IN FALL OF 2002. WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR INTO DEALERSHIP, HIGH COUNTRY TOYOTA IN SCOTTSBORO, AL, 3 TIMES AND PHONED OUR SALES REPRESENTATIVE APPROXIMATELY 6 TIMES FOR 3 PROBLEMS. #1 - RATTLING - WHICH WE WERE TOLD ON THE FIRST VISIT TO DEALER IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER HEAT SHIELD COVER AND THEY HAD FIXED IT BY BENDING IT OUT. IT'S RATTLING AGAIN, NOW. #2 - SMELL OF SULFER/ROTTEN EGGS - WHICH WE WERE TOLD THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM, SO THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT COULD BE. IT STILL SMELLS! #3 - MY HUSBAND TOOK THE CAR TO WAL-MART TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND THE TIRES BALANCED AND ROTATED BECAUSE WE NOTICED ALOT OF WEAR ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRES AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VIBRATING WHEN DRIVING. MY HUSBAND WAS PAGED BACK TO THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTION BY AN EMPLOYEE TO SEE THE TIRES HIMSELF BEFORE THEY TOOK THEM ALL OFF THE CAR AND TO WARN MY HUSBAND ABOUT DRIVING ON THE TIRES IF WE DIDN'T REPLACE THEM IMMEDIATELY. MY HUSBAND SAID THE INSIDE OF THE TIRES WERE SHOWING THE WIRES FROM SEVERE WEARING. MY HUSBAND TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED IT TO HAVE THEM INSPECT THE FRONT END FOR DAMAGE THAT COULD CAUSE THE TIRES TO WEAR IN SUCH A WAY SO QUICKLY. OUR VEHICLE IS 1 YR. OLD WITH 30,000 MILES ON IT. HE WAS TOLD IT WAS OK, BUT THE TIRES ON THE CAR AT TIME OF PURCHASE WEREN'T MEANT TO LAST VERY LONG, ANYWAY. HE TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL - TRUSTED - TIRE COMPANY AND HAD THE TIRES REPLACED.
