TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE CONSUMER SWERVED AND CRASHED INTO A TREE AND FINALLY STOPPED. UPDATED *BF UPDATED 07/06/10.*JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK TWICE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ONE TIME IN THE FALL AND AGAIN WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH IN THE SUMMER. WHEN THE CONTACT TAPPED THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO DECREASE IN SPEED EACH TIME. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WEATHER WAS NOT A FACTOR AND THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF VEHICLE EACH TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHO STATED THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD BE MADE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000.
I OWN A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE SPEAKER GRILLS ARE PLASTIC AND NOW HAVE CRUMBLE INTO LITTLE PIECES. MY CONCERN IS THIS MAKES THE CAR LOOK TERRIBLE BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR.. FOR EX. I WAS RIDING WITH FRIENDS AND WERE GETTING IN THE CAR. MY FRIEND EXCLAIMED "WHAT HAPPEN TO YOUR SPEAKERS?" SECONDLY, THE SPEAKERS SOUND LIKE THEY ARE BUSTED BECAUSE THE PIECES ARE FALLING INTO THE SPEAKER.LAST, THIS COULD POSE AND SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE THE PIECES ARE SMALL ENOUGH TO BE INGESTED BY A SMALL CHILD. SOME MAY SAY THIS IS FAR REACH .. BUT I HAVE SEEN STRANGER THINGS HAPPEN. HELP !!!PLEASE MAKE TOYOTA STAND BY THERE PRODUCTS. *TR
HESITATION IN ACCELERATION AFTER DEPRESSION OF ACCELERATOR. CAR WILL EVENTUALLY RESPOND BUT ONLY AFTER A SECOND OR TWO. UPON PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE WITH THE INTENT OF MOVING SLOWLY UP TO THE BUMPER CURB IT CAN SUDDENLY SURGE (JUMP) AHEAD UNCONTROLLABLY. IF THE DRIVER IS WAITING IN A LEFT HAND TURN LANE AWAITING FOR TIME TO MAKE A SAFE TURN IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO ASSUME THAT YOUR CAR WILL PROCEED WHEN APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR SO THAT YOU CAN PROCEED THROUGH THE TURN IN FRONT OF THE TRAFFIC OR WILL THE CAR HESITATE MOMENTARILY AND THEN SURGE AHEAD JUST IN TIME TO BE BROADSIDED BY THE ONCOMING CAR. THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS!! I DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO BE FORCED TO DRIVE THIS CAR.. WE HAVE HAD TWO INCIDENTS IN PARKING SPACES WHERE THE CAR HAS SURGED AHEAD AND WE CAUSED DAMAGE IN ON CASE TO THE CAR IN THE OPPOSING SPACE WHERE WE BUMPED A SHOPPING CART INTO THE OPPOSING CAR. THAT ONE CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CAR THAT WE HIT WHICH WE PAID FOR AND DAMAGE TO OUR CAR. THE SECOND TIME MY WHILE MOVING INTO A PARKING SPACE WITH A SIGN AT THE END OF THE SPACE WE SURGED INTO THE SIGN CAUSING $700 WORTH OF DAMAGE TO OUR CAR. I HAVE HAD THREE TRIPS TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR IS PERFORMING TO SPECIFICATIONS. THEY COULD ONLY STATE THAT THEY THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE DRIVER ERROR. I EVEN WENT TO ARBITRATION WITH THE SAME RESULT. I SIMPLY DO NOT BUY THIS RESULT. I ALSO OWN A '07 RANGER WHICH PERFORMS PERFECTLY AND MY DRIVING HABITS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME IN BOTH VEHICLES. *TR
VEHICLE WILL EXCEL AFTER LIGHTLY TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL FROM STOPPED POSITION. *TR
HEARD A THUMPING NOISE IN THE DRIVE SHAFT OF THE STEERING WHEEL. IT WOULD NOT GO AWAY, TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER TO LOOK AT. MY CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED BY A TOYOTA DEALER THERE IS A PART IN THE DRIVE SHAFT THAT LINKS TO THE CONTROL ARM OF THE WHEELS, THIS PART HAS FAILED AND COULD HAVE CAUSED ME TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND DISABLED MY ABILITY TO TURN MY WHEELS, AND CAUSE A DEADLY ACCIDENT, TOYOTA MOTOR CORP, HAS FAILED TO NOTIFY THERE CUSTOMERS OF THIS TSB BULLETIN, AND THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS NOT A RECALL ITEM. I SPOKE WITH THE DEALER AND THEY HAVE HAD OVER 100 AND 1000'S OF 2005 CAMRY'S WITH THIS PROBLEM. YET NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. DOES SOMEONE NEED TO BE KILLED OR TOYOTA SUED TO HAVE THIS PART REPLACED. THE PART IN THE DRIVE SHAFT FAILED, THERE IS A TSB ON THIS, BUT TOYOTA REFUSED TO FIX THIS DUE TO THAT MY CAR HAS OVER 36K MILES ON IT, AND UNDER 50K, NOT ONE PERSON AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WOULD FIX THIS FOR ME, WITHOUT CHARGING ME, YET THIS PART HAS BEEN PUT ON A TSB BULLETIN. THE DEALERSHIP NOR TOYOTA DID NOT INFORM ME OF THIS SITUATION. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALLED ITEM. I HAVE MY CAR SERVICE AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS AND I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, YET THE LACK OF TOYOTA TO DUE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, IS IRRESPONSIBLE. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I TOOK MY CAR TO PRIORITY TOYOTA, BECAUSE THE SERVICE BEING PROVIDED BY THE OTHER TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS IN THE AREA WAS SUBARU. I DO NOT BLAME PRIORITY TOYOTA FOR NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM, IN FACT THEY WERE THE VERY FIRST DEALERSHIP TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THE OTHER TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS IN THE AREA FAILED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, EVEN THOUGH I TOOK MY CAR TO THESE OTHER DEALERSHIPS FOR SERVICE. FIRST TEAM TOYOTA WAS THE MAIN DEALER THAT SERVICED MY CAR WHEN THERE WAS LESS THAN 36K MILES ON IT. I USE TO BRING IT TO THEM AND HAVE THEM CHECK EVERYTHING, AND THE ONLY TSB THEY TOLD ME ABOUT WAS THE BELT PULLEY, TSB, WHEN I ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY OTHERS, THEY SAID THAT WAS IT. *TR
REAR SPEAKER COVER BROKE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING AND HAD TO MANEUVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM FAILED. BOTH OF THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARMS WERE REPLACED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 76,937 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,900.
WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THE STEERING WHEEL "CLICKS" WHEN CHANGING DIRECTION. THERE IS ALSO AN INCESSANT AND RANDOM VIBRATION THAT FEELS ALMOST LIKE "DRIVING OVER BUMPS" ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THERE IS ALSO EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DEALER DID NOT COVER THIS UNDER THE TSB, BUT INSTEAD CHARGED ~$500 FOR THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT REPLACEMENT. CAR IS 2005, WITH 44K MILES. *TR
SUBJECT:2005 CAMRY LE STEERING SHAFT PROBLEM I WANTED TO FIND OUT WHETHER THERE'S BEEN ANY CONSUMER COMPLAINTS OR PROBLEMS REPORTED IN REGARDS TO A CLUNKING, POPPING OR KNOCKING NOISE REPORTED IN TOYOTA'S 2003-2006 CAMRY'S AND THE 2004-2006 SOLARA'S STEERING COLUMNS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT, OR GOING OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD. MY 2005 CAMRY LE BEGAN EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM BACK IN EARLY 2008 AND IT IS PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. I TOOK MY CAR INTO MY MECHANIC AT HARBOR AUTO CENTER IN COSTA MESA, CA ABOUT A YEAR 1/2 AGO TO GET THE PROBLEM CHECKED. (I DON'T TRUST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPAIR SERVICE OR THEIR PRICES). UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION HE WAS ABLE TO DISCOVER WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND EVEN FOUND A TOYOTA TECHNICAL SEVICE BULLETIN TITLED "STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT NOISE", REFERENCE # ST001-06, DATE OF ISSUE 2/16/06 THAT OUTLINED THE EXACT PROBLEM WITH MY STEERING COLUMN. I THEN CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO WHERE I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, BUT SINCE MY CAR WAS PAST THE 72,000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THIS WAS NOT A RECALL ITEM, THEY WOULD HAVE TO CHARGE ME. OBVIOUSLY TOYOTA CORPORATION IS VERY AWARE THAT THERE IS A MECHANICAL PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING SHAFT ON THESE TWO MAKES & MODELS, SINCE EVEN THE DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF THE SERVICE BULLETON. EVEN THOUGH MY MECHANIC THOUGHT MY CAR WAS PROBABLY OK TO DRIVE, I AM VERY CONCERNED, BECAUSE THE CLUNKING NOISE IS GETTING MORE PRONOUCED THE LONGER I DRIVE THE CAR, ESPECIALLY WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL, GO OVER SPEED BUMPS OR BRAKE AND TURN. I'M NOT SURE WHAT RECOURSE I HAVE TO GET THIS FIXED, BUT WITH ALL THE CURRENT PROBLEMS TOYOTA IS EXPERIENCING, IT MAKES ME VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE DEPENDABILITY OF MY OWN CAR. LTR TO SECRETARY REQUESTING AN INVESTIGATION OF A FATAL ACCIDENT INVOLVING HIS MOTHER IN LAW, IN HER 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. *KB THE CONSUMER WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ALL OF THE READINGS OF THE EVENT DATA RECORDER AND WHETHER VEHICLE MALFUNCTION AND/OR VEHICLE CRASH WORTHINESS CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT. JUST PRIOR TO END OF 36 MONTH WARRANTY REAR SPEAKER COVERS DISINTEGRATED, AT THE SAME TIME DAMAGING THE SPEAKERS. BOTH WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
I HAD TROUBLE WITH MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY WHILE STOPPED AT A LIGHT WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT THE ENGINE STARTED RACING AND IT WANTED TO LUNGE FORWARD. I KEEP MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE VERY HARD, PUT IT IN PARK AND KEPT IT IN PLACE. I HIT THE ACCELATOR SEVERAL TIMES AND WAS AFRAID TO PUT IT BACK IN TO DRIVE WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED. LUCKILY IIT WAS OK THEN. I AM NOT SURE IF IT WAS 2007 OR 2008 AND NOT SURE OF MONTH AND DATE BUT THIS FORM INSISTS YOU PUT ONE IN SO I PUT IN ANY DATE. I REALLY DON'T REMEMBER THE TIME FRAME. I HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER HAVING THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE AND THE RPMS SEEM HIGH WHEN NOT ACCELERATING. *CN
2005 TOYOTA CAMRY STALLED WHILE DRIVING. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE WARRANTY WAS OVERDUE BY 120 DAYS. *KB
BACK SPEAKERS FALL APART AFTER TWO YEARS AND COST $500.00 TO REPLACE. *TR
WHEN PARKING THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT HAS A CLUNKING NOISE,THE NOISE BECOMES MORE PRONOUNCED AS THE YEARS GO BY. *TR
REAR SPEAKER COVERS BECOME BRITTLE AND FAIL AFTER 2 YRS OF USE, DAMAGE SPEAKERS AND REQUIRE REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF OVER $500. NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
THIS IS IN REGARD TO OUR 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY, WHICH WE HAD PURCHASED NEW. OUR CAMRY HAS AROUND 100K MILES ON IT. ON 2/20/08, MY WIFE REPORTED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER STOPPED WORKING, WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING TO WORK IN RAINY CONDITIONS. LATER THAT MORNING, I LOOKED AT THE CAR, AND VERIFIED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE WIPER MOVED INDEPENDENTLY OF THE OTHER. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, I NOTICED THAT THE WIPER ARM ALIGNMENT WAS OFF, AND THAT THE WIPER ARM HAD A WITNESS MARK FROM HITTING AGAINST THE HOOD OF THE CAR. I THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE RETAINING NUT (WHICH HOLDS THE WIPER ARM TO THE SPLINED SHAFT) WAS ONLY FINGER TIGHT. (I HAD NEVER DISASSEMBLED THIS IN THE PAST). UPON DISASSEMBLY I OBSERVED AN OBVIOUS COLLECTION OF METAL SHAVINGS AROUND THE BASE OF THE SPLINED SHAFT, AND ON THE SHAFT ITSELF. I NOTED THAT THE CAST ALUMINUM WIPER ARM HAD LOOSENED UP (DUE TO THE LOOSE RETAINING NUT), STARTED TO BACK ITSELF UP OFF THE SPLINED SHAFT, AND ENDED UP BEING REAMED AND STRIPPED OUT, SUCH THAT THE WIPER COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVEN BY THE SPLINED SHAFT. FROM MY OBSERVATION, THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM IS THAT THE RETAINING NUT HAD NOT BEEN TIGHTENED AT (FACTORY) ASSEMBLY. THIS SYSTEM FAILURE CAUSED A SAFETY HAZARD INASMUCH AS THE WIPER BECAME INOPERATIVE WHILE ON THE ROAD, DURING RAINY CONDITIONS. THE WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. I STILL HAVE THE FAILED PART. I WANTED TO REPORT THIS, IN CASE THERE WERE ANY OTHER 2005 CAMRY OWNERS WHO MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY CAMRYLE 2005 INTO THE APTOS POST OFFICE PARKING AREA, I APPROACHED A PARKING SPOT AND THE CAR JUMPED THE CURB, HIT A SMALL LIGHT POST AND STOPPED IN THE SOFT WET DIRT PLANTING AREA. THE POST OFFICE PERSONNEL TOOK A REPORT AND PICTURE AND I WAS PULLED OUT BY AAA. I HAD SOME OF MY CAR DAMAGE REPAIRED A FEW MONTHS LATER, NOT KNOWING WHAT THE REASON OF THE MALFUNCTION WAS.
I HAVE HAD OVER 20 BRAKING INCIDENTS WITH MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. ALL BETWEEN THE SPEEDS OF 10 TO 40 MPH. EVERYTIME I GO TO APPLY THE BRAKE, THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE, AND FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES AREN'T CATCHING OR SOMETHING. ESPECIALLY WHEN ON A POORLY PAVED ROAD. I HAVE NOW BEEN INVOLVED IN 2 SEPARATE REAR-END COLLISIONS WHERE I COULD NOT STOP AND ENDED RAMMING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. A THIRD TIME I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE, AND CLIPPED A METAL SIGN. I BOUGHT THE CAR AS A TOYOTA CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED WITH 29 K MILES ON IT, IN OCTOBER 2006. I BEGAN ENCOUNTERING THIS BRAKING PROBLEM AFTER ONLY HAVING THE CAR A WEEK. THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. SO I BOUGHT ALL NEW BRAKE PADS EVEN THOUGH THE OTHERS WERE PRACTICALLY NEW. DIDN'T HELP. HAD THE BRAKE LINES BLED AGAIN, AND THE ROTORS RESURFACED. DIDN'T HELP. I FEEL THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THESE VEHICLES, AND SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT. THIS BRAKING PROBLEM HAS ALREADY COST ME OVER 2,000 IN REPAIRS AND PROPERTY DAMAGE. YET STILL I MAKE MY $450 A MONTH PAYMENT, WITH NO WORD FROM TOYOTA ON WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
THE CAR BRAKES ARE SOFT AND HARD TO STOP THE CAR ON ROAD CONDITIONS. WET, SNOW, ICE, OR ANY OTHER SUBSTANCE OTHER THAN DRY THE BRAKES GO TO THE FLOOR AND GRATE. STANDING ON BRAKE TO THE FLOOR STILL DOESN'T STOP THE CAR. I TOLD THIS TO THE CAR LOT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE ALL LIKE THAT. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS AND HAD TO GO UP ONTO GRASS OR OTHER AREA TO STOP MY CAR. THE GRATING SOUND WHEN ON WET CONDITIONS IS AWFUL AND STILL DOESN'T CONTROL THE STOP. NEW DESIGN OR DIFFERENT BRAKES NEED TO BE PUT ON THESE CARS. IT DOESN'T SEEM SAFE TO NOT BE ABLE TO STOP. *TR
THE CLOCKSPRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN HAS GONE BAD CAUSING MY DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG TO NOT BE OPERABLE AND MY HORN NOT OPERABLE, NEITHER IS MY CRUISE, BUT THE FIRST TWO ARE MY MAIN CONCERN. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED OF NO MORE THAN 15 MPH OFF OF OUR HOUSING ESTATE ON AND HEADING TOWARDS A MAIN ROAD. THE ROAD WAS ICY AND MY WIFE IS A CAUTIOUS DRIVER WHO WOULD NOT BE DRIVING AT EXCESSIVE SPEED. AS SHE APPROACHED THE JUNCTION SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR AT THE JUNCTION THE CAR DID NOT SEEM TO SLOW. SHE MADE A SPLIT SECOND DECISION TO TURN RIGHT ON TO A CUL-DE-SAC RATHER THAN GO ACROSS THE MAIN ROAD. SHE ENDED UP DRIVING ACROSS THE CUL-DE-SAC BEFORE HITTING A LAMP POST AND THEN DRIVING INTO A NEIGHBORS GARAGE DOOR WHERE THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED. MY WIFE WAS NOT INJURED ALTHOUGH THE CAR WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE VISIBLE SKID MARKS ON THE CUL-DE-SAC WHERE YOU COULD SEE THAT SHE HAD APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE POLICE REPORT CONCLUDED THAT MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH EXCESSIVE SPEED, MY WIFE IS A VERY CAUTIOUS DRIVER WHO HAS NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT IN 20 YEARS. WHEN INTERVIEWED BY THE POLICE SHE WAS NOT SURE EXACTLY HOW THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED IT HAPPENED SO ALL SHE COULD DO WAS AGREE WITH THE POLICE REPORT. GIVEN THE MEDIA ATTENTION WITH NEWER TOYOTA MODELS RECENTLY WE THOUGH WE SHOULD REPORT THIS. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE- 6 CYLINDER, NEW IN FALL OF 2004. AT PRESENT I HAVE UNDER 22,000 MILES ON IT. DURING MY LIMITED DRIVING OF THIS VEHICLE I HAVE EXPERIENCED AT LEAST 5 EPISODES OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. I RECENTLY DISCOVERED THAT ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE WHILE DRIVING MY CAR. THE LAST EXPERIENCE HAPPENED ON 12/16/09. I HAD A PASSENGER IN THE CAR WITH ME AT THE TIME. EACH EPISODE IS MORE VIOLENT THAN PREVIOUS ONES. I HAVE HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT THOROUGHLY BY THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. THE FIRST TIME THEY LOOKED AT IT WAS JULY 6/09. IT HAD STARTED TO SNOW WITH ABOUT AN INCH OR LESS ON GROUND. SINCE MY STREET IS ON AN INCLINE AND BEING AWARE OF POSSIBLE SLIPPERY CONDITIONS I WAS DRIVING LESS THAN 10MPH AS I APPROACHED MY DRIVEWAY. I WAS JUST CREEPING ALONG. AS SOON AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO GET READY TO PULL INTO MY DRIVEWAY(VERY CAUTIOUSLY) THEY JUST DIDN'T WORK AND I SLID SLOWLY DOWN THE REST OF THE STREET (APPR. 200 FT) INTO THE CROSS ROAD, WHICH THANKFULLY HAD NO CARS APPROACHING, AND I ROLLED RIGHT INTO A TREE. BECAUSE I WAS GOING SO SLOW THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO MY CAR EXCEPT FOR DENTED LICENSE PLATE NOR WAS I INJURED, JUST SHAKEN UP. I WAS ALARMED BY THE TOTAL LACK OF BRAKE CONTROL THAT I EXPERIENCED. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THE SERVICE REP SAID THAT WAS THE WAY THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WORK AND THAT I SHOULD HAVE SNOW TIRES FOR WINTER DRIVING. I HAVE LIVED ON THIS STREET FOR SEVERAL YEARS. WHEN I HAD MY HONDA ACCORD BEFORE THE CAMRY I NEVER FELT FRIGHTENED THAT IT WOULD NOT STOP IN THE SNOW. I'M A VERY CAREFUL DRIVER. I'VE ALWAYS FELT CONFIDENT DRIVING IN SNOWY CONDITIONS AND HAVE NEVER OWNED A 4-WHEEL DRIVE CAR. THIS DIDN'T FEEL NORMAL TO ME EVEN THOUGH IT COULD HAVE BEEN THAT I WAS ON MY STREET AT JUST THE PERFECT MOMENT DURING A SNOWSTORM WHEN THE STREETS HAD ACCUMULATED JUST ENOUGH SNOW TO BE HAZARDESS. NOW, AS I AM READING ALL THESE PROBLEMS WITH TOYOTA I'M REMINDED AGAIN OF MY DISCOMFORT IN REGARD TO MY BRAKES AND AM WONDERING AGAIN IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS REMEDYING. THE RETAINING NUT FOR THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY CAME OFF THE SHAFT CAUSING THE PULLEY TO WOBBLE WHICH LED TO THE LOSS OF THE SERPENTINE BELT; WITHOUT THE BELT I LOST POWER STEERING, THE BATTERY BEGAN TO RUN LOW AND THE ENGINE STARTED TO OVERHEAT. FORTUNATELY I WAS 2 MILES FROM HOME AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT THERE W/O ANY DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, ~19,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, AND WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY - SEAT BELT RETRACTORS. AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT ON MY CAMRY WOULD OCCASIONALLY PARTIALLY FOLD OVER AT THE RETRACTOR GUIDE ON THE DOOR POST. AT 75,000 MILES, THIS NOW HAPPENS ABOUT 1/3 TO1/2 OF THE TIME AND I AM STARTING TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE BELT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE BELT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO STRAIGHTEN BECAUSE THE GAP IS TOO NARROW TO USE A WOODEN TOOL AND A METAL TOOL SUCH AS A SCREWDRIVER WOULD CUT THE BELT. I HAVE RECENTLY FOUND THAT I CAN LOWER THE MOVABLE ATTACHMENT POINT TO THE LOWEST LEVEL, FULLY EXTEND AND HOLD THE BELT AND THEN MOVE THE ATTACHMENT POINT TO ITS HIGHEST LEVEL. AGAIN SHE STATED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED REDUCING BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS AND ALLOWING THE ENGINE TO ACCELERATE THE CAR. I TEST DROVE THE CAR EACH TIME AND FOUND THAT IT OPERATED NORMALLY. THESE EVENTS HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE 2 YEARS WE HAVE OWNED THE CAR. THE ACCELERATION DURING THE LAST EVENT WAS STRONGER AND RESULTED IN A CRASH. MY WIFE HAS A GOOD DRIVING RECORD, KNOWS IF SHE IS DEPRESSING GAS PEDAL INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT A FACTOR. THE 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY WAS NEW WHEN WE PURCHASED IT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME TURNED RIGHT, THANK GOODNESS BECAUSE AS I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND UNTO THE GAS, MY CAR SHOT FORWARD SO FAST MY BRAKES WOULDN'T STOP MY CAR. UPON SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES WHICH WERE SHUDDERING SO BADLY, I THOUGHT MY CAR WAS NEVER GOING TO STOP AND HIT THE NEXT CAR (RUSH HOUR). I STOPPED SHORT OF HITTING THAT CAR. I WAS SO SCARED. MY SERVICE MANAGER SAID COULDN'T REPRODUCE AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY BRAKES OR CAR. HE TOLD ME THAT THE SHUTTERING IS NORMAL WHEN I SLAM ON MY BRAKES--A SAFETY FEATURE TO STOP THE CAR. COMPUTER SAID NOTHING WRONG. HAD THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM AT LEAST 3 MORE TIMES. I WAS AT A PARKING METER, 1ST SPACE. GOT INTO MY CAR, TURNED ON THE KEY, RELEASED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND UNTO THE GAS. I WANTED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. THERE WERE 2 PEOPLE ON THE SIDEWALK, AND THANKFULLY THEY DID NOT WALK IN FRONT OF MY CAR--I WOULD HAVE RUN OVER THEM. MY CAR TOOK OFF SO FAST FROM A STOPPED POSITION THAT I HAD A HARD TIME STOPPING MY CAR. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK MY 2005 CAMRY TO THE DEALER. AGAIN SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME COMPUTER SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR--THINK COMPUTER/SOFTWARE GLITCH. LAST WEEK TOYOTA CORP SAID WON'T FIX B/C NOT ON RECALL AND ONLY INTERMITTENT, WHICH IS THE PROBLEM. TOLD ME I OWN THE CAR, IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY WON'T PAY TO FIX. HELP! WHEN DRIVING IT'S LIKE RUSSIAN ROULETTE! *TR
THE AUTOMOBILE CONSISTENTLY HESITATES WHEN DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. THIS OCCURS WHEN LEAVING STOP SIGNS, MERGING AT MEDIUM SPEEDS AND PASSING ON 2-WAY OR DIVIDED HIGHWAYS AND ACCELERATING AFTER DECELERATING. IT THEN OVER ACCELERATES WHEN IT MAKES UP ITS MIND YOU WANT TO GO FASTER AFTER A SECOND OR TWO. TOYOTA CLAIMS THE CAR WORKS AS DESIGNED. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE IN THIS AUTOMOBILE, SINCE THE OTHER DRIVERS DO NOT REALIZE THAT THIS CAR IS A PIECE OF JUNK. *TR

VEHICLE SURGES, REVS WHEN ACCELERATING, STALLS WHEN DECELERATING, HAVE HAD PROBLEM SINCE CAR WAS NEW. NOW 19 MONTHS OLD. RETURNED TO DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES. THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM, TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM. "WITHIN DESIGN PARAMETERS" THEY SAY. TWO CONTACTS WITH TOYOTA H.O. REP. ACTUALLY CALLED IT A "DESIGN DEFECT". TOLD ME TO "PAT THE ACCLERATOR" WHEN I HAVE THE PROBLEM. ALSO TOLD ME "MULTIPLE DRIVERS" WILL HELP THE CAR PERFORM BETTER. THE VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS AND UNTRUSTWORTHY. THOUSANDS OF OTHERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. NO FIX AS THIS TRULY IS A DESIGN DEFECT, "DRIVE BY WIRE" SCHEME. WILL ANYONE WITH CLOUT STEP UP? PAID $30000 FOR THE VEHICLE. V6 XLE. JUNK. EVERYONE ADMITS THE PROBLEM, NO ONE ASSUMES THE RESPONSIBILITY.

ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY V6. IT WAS AN UNUSUALLY RAINY DAY IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA. AS I EXITED A FREEWAY OFF-RAMP TO COME TO A STOP, IT FELT LIKE THE ABS SYSTEM TOOK OVER THE BRAKING. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR BRAKED, THEN ACCELERATED RAPIDLY, FISHTAILING A BIT ON THE WET PAVEMENT. I PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND WAS ABLE TO STOP A FEW FEET PAST THE STOP SIGN. LUCKILY, THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS ON THE RURAL ROAD WHERE I EXITED--THE FRONT PART OF MY CAR WAS PAST THE STOP SIGN AND OUT IN THE ROAD FOR PERPENDICULAR TRAFFIC. I WAS PERPLEXED BY THE SHORT BURST OF ACCELERATION, BUT ATTRIBUTED IT TO THE ADVANCED BRAKING SYSTEM. I HAD NEVER HAD THAT TAKE CONTROL BEFORE. MAYBE THIS INFO CAN HELP IN YOUR CURRENT INVESTIGATION OF THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN TOYOTA CAMRYS. THIS WAS THE ONLY TIME I EXPERIENCED THE ACCELERATION. THE CAR HAS BEEN IN FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. I ASKED MY MECHANIC TO CHECK THE BRAKES SINCE THE PEDAL SEEMS TO BE "SOFT"--IT GOES DOWN A BIT BEFORE ENGAGING THE BRAKES. MECHANIC FINDS NO PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES. *TR
