I HAVE A 2005 CAMRY. I KNOW IT IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL, BUT FOR THE PAST 2-3 YEARS I HAVE HAD THIS SPORADIC PROBLEM. WHEN I AM STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT SOMETIMES IT SURGES FORWARD...NOT ALWAYS A LOT, BUT SOMETIMES QUITE HARD. I STARTED KEEPING TRACK AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT IS COLD ENGINE OR WARM ENGINE. THEN JUST THE OTHER DAY MY RADIO SHUT OFF AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WHILE I WAS DRIVING, AND CAME BACK ON WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. BECAUSE IT IS SO SPORADIC, LIKE IT WILL DO IT FOR 2-3 DAYS AND THEN NOT FOR 2-3 DAYS, TO HAVE SOMEONE CHECK IT THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE IT IN THE SHOP AND I NEED A CAR TO GO TO WORK. TO HAVE IT CHECKED INVOLVES A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE IT MUST BE ELECTRICAL...HOW DO I KNOW???? *TR
CAR IS TOYOTA CAMRY 2005 50K MILES, STILL UNDER POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. DISCOVERED RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. TOOK CAR TO THE DEALER. DEALER DIAGNOSED BROKEN DIVERTER INSIDE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. I WAS ADVISED THAT BROKEN DEBRIS FROM DIVERTER MAY FALL INTO THE ENGINE AND CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE. TOYOTA REFUSED TO MAKE REPAIR UNDER POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. THIS PART WAS COVERED UP TO THE 2004 YEAR MODEL. FOR 2005 MODEL TOYOTA EXCLUDED THIS ITEM FROM POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, KNOWING THAT THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT REPEATING IN THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES. I SEE INTERNET FLOODED WITH COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN MODELS STARTING FROM 2002 AND UP. I AM SURPRISED WHY NHTSA DOES NOT MAKE AN ACTION TO FORCE MANUFACTURER TO FIX WELL KNOWN AND REPEATING FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, MAJOR SAFETY DEFECT, AS VEHICLE'S MOTOR MAY FAIL AND BLOW ANY MOMENT IN CASE METAL DEBRIS FROM DIVERTER FELL INTO THE ENGINE. *TR
I AM HEARING A KNOCKING SOUND COMING FROM MY STEERING WHEEL. I ONLY HAVE 45,000 MILES ON MY CAR. I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY THEY TOLD ME THAT MY STEERING COLUMN IS LOOSE AND THAT IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ASAP; WITH THE COST OF $500 DOLLARS. AFTER CHECKING ONLINE I SEE THAT THERE IS SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM/COMPLAINT. THEY ALSO HAVE A TOYOTA CAMRY. I TAKEN MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP PREVIOUS WITH COMPLAINTS, OF COURSE BEFORE MY WARRANTY WENT OUT AND TOLD THEM THAT I FELT LIKE MY CAR WAS PULLING AND WAS STEERING WEIRD. THEY TOLD ME NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR AND THAT IT WAS NORMAL. WELL I'M SURE IT WASN'T NORMAL, AND NOW I DON'T HAVE A WARRANTY ON MY CAR. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED! HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE ENGINE HAS STARTED ACCELERATING THREE TIMES, THE LAST BEING 2/14/09. EACH TIME THE BRAKES WERE ABLE TO KEEP THE CAR FROM SPEEDING UP AND, AFTER A FEW SECONDS, THE ENGINE WENT BACK TO AN IDLE. TWO TIMES I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER (AND TALKED OTHER TIMES) AND THEY CHECKED IT OUT. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM AND AFTER CONFERRING WITH THEIR "HEADQUARTERS" IN CALIFORNIA, SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. AFTER READING THE FIRST ARTICLE IN A NEWSPAPER ABOUT THIS CONCERN I CHECKED THE FLOOR MAT. THE FLOOR MAT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FOR THE PAST YEAR THE VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED BRAKING PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25 MPH. THE BRAKES FAILED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN OVER A SPEED BUMP OR UNEVEN PAVEMENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. DURING A REAR END CRASH, THE SEAT BELT IN THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE FAILED. AS A RESULT, THE CONSUMER'S WIFE STRUCK THE STEERING WHEEL AND SUFFERED HEAD AND CHEST INJURIES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT FAILED TO WORK PROPERLY. ON TWO OCCASSIONS I THOUGHT I WAS STEPPING ON THE BRAKE BUT THE CAR SURGED BACKWARDS. I WAS ABLE TO STOP BUT NOT BEFORE HITTING A CAR BEHIND ME. THE SECOND TIME I HIT A FENCE IN A SCHOOL PARKING LOT WHILE PICKING UP YOUNG CHILDREN. IT WAS DISMISSAL TIME SO THERE WERE MANY 3-4 GRADE CHILDREN AROUND. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THE TIRES LEAKED AIR SOON AFTER PURCHASE AND AFTER 6000 MILES THERE WAS UNEVEN WEAR. AFTER 25000 MILES THE DEALER INDICATED THAT NEW TIRES WERE NEEDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60000.
BACKING OUT OF PARKING SPOT AT A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL AFTER DROPPING OFF MY GRAND DAUGHTER FOR SOCCER PRACTICE. WHEN I PUT MY 05 TOYOTA CAMRY IN "REVERSE", IT BOLTED AT WHAT SEEMED LIKE MAXIMUM SPEED "BACKWARDS" GRAZING ONE CAR AND SMASHING INTO ANOTHER PARKED CAR ABOUT 25 FEET AWAY. TOTAL LOSS ON MY CAR AND MUCH DAMAGE TO OTHERS. LUCKY THERE WERE NO KIDS WALKING IN THE LOT AT THE TIME OF ACCIDENT. I READ AN ARTICLE LAST NIGHT THAT DESCRIBED THE SAME "STICKING ACCELERATOR" PROBLEM OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED. I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE DEFECT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, AND GOT "CHASTISED" BY LAW ENFORCEMENT FOR DRIVING RECKLESSLY. *TR
IMPENDING FAILURE OF INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINTS THAT CURRENTLY CAUSES 'CLUNKS' IN STEERING BUT IS PROGRESSING AND COULD CAUSE FAILURE OF STEERING SHAFT AND LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF VEHICLE OR BINDING OR LOCKING OF STEERING ASSEMBLY. TOYOTA HAS A VOLUNTARY PROGRAM TO REPLACE FAULTY DESIGN, BUT ONLY EXTENDS THAT DURING THE ORIGINAL 3/36 WARRANTY. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THUS FAR TOYOTA IS OF LITTLE OR NO HELP. ANECDOTALLY, THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS SERIES OF CARS AND SEVERAL OTHER LINES OF TOYOTAS OF SIMILAR VINTAGE. *TR
2005 CAMRY DELAYS, THEN LURCHES FORWARD, WHEN ACCELERATING FROM UNDER 10 MPH. WHEN CAR IS DRIVEN ABOVE 10 MPH THEN IS DECELERATED TO UNDER 10 (I.E. TO MAKE LEFT TURN) THEN ACCELERATED, THE ENGINE WILL REV AND AFTER A .25 TO .5 SECOND DELAY THE TRANSMISSION CATCHES AND THROWS THE CAR FORWARD. *TR
WE ARE WRITING TO EXPRESS OUR DISCOMFORT AND DISAPPOINTMENT WITH OUR 2005 CAMRY. THIS IS THE THIRD CAMRY THAT WE HAVE OWNED, AND UNTIL NOW, WE HAVE BEEN EXCEPTIONALLY PLEASED WITH ALL OF THEM FROM THE STYLE, THE PERFORMANCE, AS WELL AS THE MAINTENANCE. ON DECEMBER 23, 2009, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD, ACCELERATED, HIT A PARKED VEHICLE, AND UPON MY (LILLIE) TRYING TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, AND THUS THE BRAKES DID NOT CATCH. I MANAGED TO MANEUVER THE CAR TO AN EMPTY LOT AND BRING IT TO A STOP. THERE WERE TWO OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CAR WITH ME INCLUDING A CHILD. I WAS DISTRAUGHT. OF COURSE, DAMAGE WAS DONE TO BOTH VEHICLES. WHEN MY HUSBAND ARRIVED, HE TRIED THE BRAKES, AND THEY DID NOT CATCH. AFTER REPORTING THIS INCIDENT TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY, WE CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TO TOW IT IN TO BE CHECKED. THE BRAKES WERE TESTED, AND ACCORDING TO THE MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT, THERE WAS NO PROBLEM FOUND AT THIS TIME. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST ACCIDENT WITH THE BRAKES FAILING. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR IN AUGUST OF 2005, AND AGAIN ATTEMPTING TO PARK, THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AND WENT THROUGH THE WALL OF A LOCAL RESTAURANT. FORTUNATELY, THE RESTAURANT WAS CLOSED, AND NO ONE WAS INJURED, HOWEVER, EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO BOTH THE CAR AND THE RESTAURANT. I WAS SURE THE BRAKES FAILED, BUT THINKING THIS WAS PROBABLY UNUSUAL, I CONVINCED MYSELF THAT PERHAPS SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW, I WAS NOT QUITE ACCUSTOMED TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKES. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THIS HAPPENED AGAIN, THAT I KNEW THE BRAKES HAD CERTAINLY FAILED. THESE WERE TWO FRIGHTENING, EXPENSIVE EXPERIENCES. THE FIRST ONE WAS REPORTED TO THE POLICE. 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY - I [XXX] HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE SAME ACCELERATION PROBLEMS AS THE 2007-2010. TWICE I HAVE BEEN IN TWO ACCIDENTS DUE TO ACCELERATION PROBLEM AND HAD TO GO THROUGH MY INSURANCE COMPANY FIX, THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE 2007, MY DAUGHTER HAS ALMOST BEEN IN WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN TWO MAJOR COLLISIONS. I FEEL LIKE I AM DRIVING A DEATH TRAP. I HAVE WRITTEN TOYOTA REGARDING THIS MATTER WITH NO RESPONSE FROM THEM. BRAKE FAILURE WHEN BRAKING ON SLIGHTLY UNEVEN SURFACE. 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE - CURRENT 50K MILES WHILE DEPRESSING BRAKES ON A SMALL BUMP OR POTHOLE, IT BRAKES MAKE A GRINDING NOISE AND DO NOT WORK FOR A FEW SECONDS. AFTER THE SURFACE IS EVEN THE BRAKES WORK FINE. THIS IS NOT SIMPLY ABS AS OCCURS WITH SLIGHT BRAKE PRESSURE AND ON VERY MINOR BUMPS ON THE ROAD. FOR SAFETY, MUST USE EMERGENCY 'HAND BRAKE' TO PREVENT MAJOR ACCIDENTS WHILE ON UNEVEN SURFACES. ONE INCIDENT, BRAKE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE TRYING TO STOP AT RED LIGHT AND A SMALL BUMP ON ROAD NEAR STOP LINE CAUSED CAR TO NOT STOP AND JUMP THE CURB ON STREET. THANKFULLY NO PERMANENT DAMAGE OR BODILY INJURY. SINCE I HAVE MANAGED TO AVOID ACCIDENTS WITH HANDBRAKE OR BRAKING WAY AHEAD OF TIME WHEN I SEE AN UNEVEN SPOT IN FRONT OF ME.. HOWEVER, ACCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED WITH THIS PROBLEM ON OTHER SAME MODEL YEAR CARS. THIS OCCURS REGULARLY WHILE ON UNEVEN SURFACES STARTING NEAR PURCHASE DATE. HAVE TAKEN TO DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND REPORTED AS 'NORMAL'. SUSPECT CURRENT BRAKE RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED BY TOYOTA. *TR
WHILE SLOWLY PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AND WITH MY FOOT RESTING ON THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED AND THE CAR BOLTED FORWARD OF ITS OWN ACCORD. DESPITE EFFORTS TO BRAKE HARD, THE CAR WOULD NOT CEASE TO MOVE FORWARD AND HIT A POLE. NOT UNTIL THE CAR WAS PUT IN REVERSE AND BACKED OUT OF THE POLE DID THE ENGINE STOP. THERE WAS NO CONFUSION DURING THIS INCIDENT OF WHICH PEDAL WAS BEING PUSHED. AS I WAS ALREADY HALF INTO THE SPACE AND HAD STARTED TO DECELERATE, MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, NOT THE ACCELERATOR. ALSO, A QUICK CHECK AFTER THE INCIDENT TO ENSURE THAT IT WAS INDEED THE BRAKE THAT I WAS PUSHING PROVED TO BE ACCURATE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING NEARLY TWENTY YEARS WITH NO AT-FAULT ACCIDENTS AND A CLEAN DRIVING RECORD. I HAVE NEVER ONCE DURING THAT TIME MISTOOK THE ACCELERATOR FOR THE BRAKE, AND, EVEN IF THAT WAS THE CASE HERE, I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT HAVE PUSHED IT SO HARD WHEN I WAS ALREADY HALFWAY INTO A PARKING SPACE THAT IT WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO REACT THE WAY IT DID. I AM IN MY MID-THIRTIES AND STILL HAVE ALL OF MY FACULTIES, AS WELL AS A QUICK RESPONSE TIME. FEARING TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORM ME, AFTER WHAT THEY CLAIM TO BE EXHAUSTIVE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, THAT THEY CAN FIND NO PROBLEMS. I WILL TRY TO GET RID OF THIS VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS I DO NOT WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S DEATH/INJURY WHEN THIS OCCURS AGAIN. MY SISTER AND HER BOYFRIEND, BOTH OF WHOM HAVE TOYOTAS, HAVE TOLD ME THAT THIS HAS OCCURRED ON THEIR VEHICLES AS WELL. SHE HAS A 2007 CAMRY AND HE HAS A 2009 MATRIX. *TR

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS BEGAN COASTING ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING THE VEHICLE RESPONDED NORMALLY WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THE HESITATION AND SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE RAPIDLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED THREE TIMES AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. A LOCAL MECHANIC STATED THAT THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR WAS OUT OF RANGE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SENSOR WAS REPLACE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED THERE WAS MINIMAL HESITATION WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AT LOW SPEEDS. HE HAS NOT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 33,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,363.
2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. REAR WINDOW SPEAKER GRILLS, BOTH OF THEM. THEY ARE CRACKING AND FALLING APART EVEN THOUGH NO ONE HAS TOUCHED THEM AN NOTHING HAS BEEN PLACED ON THEM. I UNDERSTAND THIS HAS BECOME A COMMON COMPLAINT. TOYOTA SAID I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE SECTION FOR ABOUT $500 FOR PARTS. (NOT INCLUDING LABOR) BUT OTHERS SAY THE REPLACEMENT PART FALLS APART TOO. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUMPED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION, BUT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WITHOUT RESOLUTIONS. RECENTLY, THE BRAKES FAILED AND CAUSED A CRASH. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,537 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 43,300.
WHILE IN PROCESS OF PARKING 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY 6 CYLINDER IN ONE-LEVEL PARKING SPACE TRAVELING AT LESS THAN 5 MPH, WITH FOOT ON BRAKE, VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND WENT OUT OF CONTROL, CRASHING INTO POLE, INJURING DRIVER SLIGHTLY. WAS SECOND SUCH INCIDENT ABOUT ONE YEAR APART, WITH STONE WALL STOPPING VEHICLE DURING FIRST INCIDENT, WHILE RIPPING OFF ENTIRE FRONT END. *TR
I HAVE HAD THIS CAR 2 YEARS.. THE STEERING COLUMN (SHAFT TO THE WHEEL) VIBRATES AT TIMES WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. OCCASIONALLY, WHEN GOING OVER CERTAIN OR DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE ROAD... IT IS LIKE A RATTLE VIBRATION. IT IS NOT CONSTANT BUT IS THIS NORMAL?? IS IT A DEFECT?? SHOULD IT VIBRATE AT ALL??? *TR THE CONSUMER FELT THE DEALER SHOULD HAVE INFORMED HIM ABOUT THE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE BEFORE HE PURCHASED IT. UPDATED 03/12/10
DIRECT FULL FRONTAL IMPACT @ 35-40 MPH INTO JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE TURNING LEFT IN FRONT OF ME. AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY - ENTIRE FRONT END DEMOLISHED (CAR WAS TOTALED). 2 INJURED AND STILL IN PHYSICAL THERAPY. ADVISED BY POLICE OFFICER THAT I PROBABLY "NOSE DIVED DURING BRAKING AND WHEN FRONT OF CAR DIPPED, IMPACT WAS ABOVE SENSORS". HAVE HEARD OF MANY OTHER INSTANCES WHERE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. *TR
THE CAR REVS FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND THE RPMS GO VERY HIGH. FIRST TIME IN OCT 2008 BACKING OUT OF A PARKING THE REVS SHOT UP. TOYOTA SERVICE FOUND NOTHING. SECOND OCCASION JULY 2009 WHILE AT A LIGHT THE RPMS SHOT UP FOR NO APPARENT REASON. FORTUNATELY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, SO NO DAMAGE DONE. ALSO NOTICED THAT EVEN AFTER LETTING FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL THE REVS WOULD NOT COME DOWN FOR SOME TIME. NON TOYOTA SERVICE STATION LOOKED AT IT, AND CLEANED THE THROTTLE PLATE. THIRD OCCASION IN JAN 2010 MY WIFE WAS DRIVING DOWNHILL WHEN SUDDENLY THERE WAS A SURGE AND THE CAR RPM'S SHOT UP FOR NO APPARENT REASON. SHE HIT THE BRAKES HARD AND EVERYTHING WENT BACK TO NORMAL. I TOOK THE CAR TO TOYOTA AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING. THEY BLAMED IT ON THE FLOOR MATS, WHICH I DISAGREED WITH AS THERE IS A REASONABLE CLEARANCE GAP BETWEEN THE GAS PEDAL AND THE MATS. HOSPITALIZATION FOR 7 DAYS, UNABLE TO EAT, ICE CHIPS ONLY FOR 6 DAYS. 30+ STAPLES UP MY STOMACH AND A NEW DIGESTIVE PROCESS FOREVER. I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY SE V6 3.3L . 31,000 MILES. PURCHASED NEW. SINCE NEW THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTING. IT SEEMS TO GET CONFUSED ON WHAT GEAR TO SHIFT INTO WHEN YOU LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 20 AND 45. YOU CAN FEEL THE TRANSMISSION JUMP BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN GEARS. IT IS NOT SUTTLE AT ALL. IT FEELS LIKE THE TRANS IS ON ITS WAY OUT. I KNOW QUITE A BIT ABOUT CARS, ENOUGH TO KNOW EVENTUALLY THIS TRANS WILL FAIL IF IT CONTINUES TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THIS CAR LIKE MANY OTHER NEWER VEHICLE SHIFTS WHEN THE COMPUTER TELLS IT TO, AND IT ALSO HAS WHAT THEY CALL "THROTTLE BY WIRE" ACCELERATION CONTROL, WHICH MEANS THE ACCELERATION IS ALSO CONTROLLED BY COMPUTER AND NOT BY A CABLE CONNECTED TO THE PEDAL LIKE CARS ALWAYS HAD BEEN. I BELIEVE THE COMBINATION OF THESE TWO THINGS IS EXACTLY WHAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM. TWICE I HAVE TALKED TO SOMEONE AT THE DEALER. ONCE THEY TOLD ME SOME VEHICLES VIN #'S ARE QUALIFIED FOR A COMPUTER SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE AND OTHERS VIN#'S ARE NOT. TODAY I CALLED AND THE SERVICE GUY AND HE TOLD ME THERE IS NO SUCH RECALL AT ALL AND HE HASN'T HAD ANYONE COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN MAY WITH 48,000 MILES FROM THE LAKE CHARLES, LA TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I CURRENTLY HAVE 58,000 MILES AND HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING TO WAL-MART ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR WHEN OUR CAR APPEARED TO JUMP A FEW TIMES WITHOUT PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATION. AFTER COMMENTING ON THE JUMPS I NOTICED NO RESPONSE FROM THE PEDAL AND REALIZED THAT THE CAR HAD DIED. LUCKILY I MADE IT INTO A PARKING LOT WHERE A MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH OUR CARS COMPUTER. THE DIAGNOSTIC SAID IT WAS OUR THROTTLE BODY, AND THAT WE COULD MAKE IT HOME IF WE TOOK IT EASY. DURING THE 5 MILE TRIP THE CAR WOULD SURGE BETWEEN 1,500 AND 3,000 RPMS AND WOULD DIE AT STOP LIGHTS IN THE DRIVE POSITION. I LEARNED TO PLACE THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND LET IT RACE UNTIL THE LIGHT TURNED AND THEN PLACE IN DRIVE. THE REST OF THE WAY HOME I KEPT THE CAR IN HIGH RPMS >3,500 TO KEEP FROM FEELING THE SURGE. AT HOME I RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT I AM NOT THE FIRST, AND LUCKY THAT IT DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. OTHER SITES MENTIONED TO GET THROTTLE BODY CLEANER AND A SOFT RAG TO WIPE GRIME FROM THROTTLE BODY. AFTER DOING SO THE CAR WOULD IDLE AT 200 RPM. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I TEST DROVE AND FOUND THAT ANY MILD ACCELERATION WOULD BOG IT DOWN AND KILL IT. THEN LATER IT WOULD IDLE AT 2,500 RPMS IN DRIVE AND I WOULD HAVE TO PRESS VERY HARD ON THE BREAK TO KEEP FROM MOVING FORWARD. THIS CAR IS VERY DANGEROUS AND COULD HAVE EASILY HURT SOMEONE. *TR

I PURCHASED MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE IN AUGUST, 2005. AFTER ABOUT 3 YEARS, I STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH BOTH FRONT SEATBELTS RETRACTING PROPERLY. WHEN THE SEATBELT IS INITIALLY PULLED OUT TO PUT IT ON, IT DOES NOT RETRACT TO CREATE A SNUG FIT WHILE WEARING IT. THE FABRIC PART OF THE SEATBELT FOLDS OVER AND TWISTS, PREVENTING IT FROM RETRACTING. MOST OF THE TIME IT CAN BE CORRECTED WITH A LITTLE MANIPULATION AND MUCH FRUSTRATION. BUT, THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW INCIDENTS WHERE I HAVE HAD TO TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC TO FIX IT. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT FOR MY SPECIFIC YEAR, MAKE, & MODEL AND THEY SAID IT WOULD COST BETWEEN $300-$400 PER SEATBELT TO REPLACE THE PARTS OR I COULD JUST WAIT FOR TOYOTA TO ISSUE A RECALL. THAT WAS 4 YEARS AGO AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL FOR THE PROBLEM. I THINK IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT THERE SEEMS TO BE AN OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THE SEATBELTS ON THIS CAR, BASED ON THE # OF COMPLAINTS I'VE READ ON NUMEROUS WEBSITES REGARDING THIS EXACT ISSUE. I JUST HOPE TOYOTA IS NOT WAITING FOR A SERIOUS INJURY OR A FATALITY TO HAPPEN BEFORE THEY ISSUE A RECALL. IN JULY 2008 I WAS PULLING MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY INTO A PARKING SPOT AND HIT A STEEL FENCE (WHICH PREVENTED ME FROM HITTING A BRICK WALL). I REPORTED TO GEICO THAT MY BRAKES FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT SHE SHOULD CONTINUE TO JIGGLE OR "PLAY" WITH THE STEERING AND THE KEY UNTIL SHE IS ABLE TO TURN THE IGNITION TO START. THE WHEEL LOCKED AGAIN, BUT SHE WAS UNABLE TO UNLOCK THE STEERING COLUMN. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK THE STEERING COLUMN AND CHARGED THE CONTACT $75. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD BE DIAGNOSED FOR $65 AND STATED THAT THERE DID NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY FAILURES. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AS NORMAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,000.
ON 6/25/08 I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE BECAUSE THERE WAS TRAFFIC UP AHEAD BUT THE CAR DIDN'T SLOW DOWN AND KEPT ON GOING. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE HARDER AND FOUND THAT I HAD TO HOLD IT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO JUST SLOW DOWN. I NEARLY HIT SOME CARS TRYING TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE BRAKES ON THIS CAR. THEN BEING VERY CONCERNED I DROVE HOME SLOWLY ONLY USING THE GAS PEDAL AND SLOWING COMPLETELY AT AN INTERSECTION IN ORDER TO GET HOME SAFELY. THE NEXT DAY I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE TOYOTA DEALER IN TORRINGTON CT TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. THEY SAID THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $576.22. MY CAR HAD 67,266 MILES AT THAT TIME. IT WAS FIXED AND HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE SINCE THEN. I CHECKED CAR COMPLAINTS.COM AND FOUND OTHERS HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM. I FOUND THIS INCIDENT RATHER UNUSUAL BECAUSE I HAVE OWNED THREE TOYOTAS SO FAR AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. I AM POSTING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE THIS DEFECTIVE MASTER CYLINDER COULD HAVE CAUSED SOME VERY SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES FOR ME AND OTHERS AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER IF OTHERS ARE ALSO HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. WE OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. MY HUSBAND WAS THE DRIVER AND WAS INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WHEN HE WAS CUT OFF WHILE ENTERING A STATE HIGHWAY IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. MY 5 YEAR OLD SON WAS IN THE BACK SEAT BEHIND THE PASSENGER SEAT IN A BOOSTER SEAT WITH HIS SEAT BELT ON. DURING THE IMPACT, MY SON WAS UNRESTRAINED DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE SEAT BELT. THE SEAT BELT NEVER CAUGHT IN THE RETRACTING MECHANISM ALLOWING MY SON TO BE THROWN FORWARD INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT. MY SON HAD A MASSIVE HEAD TRAUMA AND WAS AIR-LIFTED TO JOHNS HOPKINS. HE WAS RELEASED THE NEXT MORNING WITH A SERIOUS CONCUSSION. THE OTHER PASSENGERS HAD VERY MINOR INJURIES.
