GAS PEDAL STICKS AND CAUSES VEHICLE TO "LURCH" WHEN PROCEEDING FROM A STOP. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO HIT THE ONE IN FRONT IF MOVING FORWARD FROM A STOP LIGHT. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER WHEN UNDER WARRANTY- SHORT TEST DRIVE SAID "NOTHING WRONG", NOW OBVIOUS SOMETHING IS WRONG. THE PURPOSE IS NOT TO "PILE ON" TOYOTA, BUT TO BRING ATTENTION TO A SAFETY ISSUE. DT:THE CONTACT STATED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE ENGINE RACED AND THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THIS HAPPENED WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AND WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES, BUT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN CONTACTED, AND THEY RECOMMENDED TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP.*AK UPDATED EVOQ 10/08/10 THE CONSUMER STATED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES, SINCE THE FALL OF 2005. UPDATED EVOQ 04/19/12 THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION FROM 2005-2010. IT APPEARED TO BE A PROBLEM MOSTLY LIKELY CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE MICROPROCESSOR. UPDATED 04/09/14
TRANSMISSION HESITATION WHEN PRESSING GAS PEDAL. AFTER 2 OR 3 SECONDS THE CAR THEN LURCHES FORWARD VIOLENTLY. THIS NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS I ATTEMPTED TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN DEFECT THAT WILL CAUSE MANY ACCIDENTS IF NOT CORRECTED VERY SOON. *JB
I HAD MY NEW 2005 CAMRY INTO THE DEALERSHIP (LONGO TOYOTA, EL MONTE, CA) THREE TIMES IN THE FIRST MONTH AFTER I PURCHASED IT. I EXPLAINED THAT THERE WAS A MAJOR SURGE IN ACCELERATION WHILE BREAKING. I ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR ?JUMPING? FORWARD WHILE AT A COMPLETE STOP, AND ANOTHER ISSUE WITH A LAG IN ACCELERATION. ALL THREE OF THESE ISSUES HAVE HAPPENED MORE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY TIMES THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO ACCELERATE AT FIRST, ONLY TO FIND MYSELF TRYING TO BRAKE (AND NOT SUCCEEDING) AS SOON AS THE ACCELERATOR KICKS IN SECONDS LATER, SENDING THE CAR SURGING FORWARD. I'VE TAKEN THE CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND EACH TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM - THAT WHATEVER MY ISSUE MIGHT BE, IT COULD NOT?T BE REPLICATED, AND THAT ANY ?TIMING? CONCERN WAS ONLY THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE ? AND THAT THIS WAS COMPLETELY NORMAL. THE ISSUES WITH THE CAMRY?S ACCELERATION & ELECTRONIC THROTTLE ARE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS, AND WERE ALMOST THE CAUSE OF A MAJOR ACCIDENT (MY 3 YEAR OLD SON WAS IN THE CAR AT THE TIME), AND COUNTLESS OTHER MINOR NEAR-ACCIDENTS. I AM A SAFE, 33 YEAR OLD FEMALE DRIVER WITH 17 YEARS OF DRIVING-EXPERIENCE, AND ONLY ONE ACCIDENT ON MY RECORD (A MAN REAR-ENDED ME ON THE FREEWAY IN 2003). TOYOTA IS SUCH A POPULAR BRAND, AND IF THERE ARE OTHER CAMRY OWNERS, THEN NONE OF US ARE SAFE. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO BE INJURED OR DIE BEFORE TOYOTA OWNS UP TO THEIR MISTAKE? MY ONE WEEK OLD TOYOTA CAMRY'S SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T SHOW THE CORRECT SPEED. BELL ROAD TOYOTA TOLD ME THERE'S A 10% TOLERANCE SO IF IT'S NOT OFF BY MORE THAN THAT THEY WON'T FIX IT. MINE IS OFF BY 10% AND I THINK THAT'S A HAZARD. EVERY TIME I LOOK DOWN AT THE SPEEDOMETER I HAVE TO DO THE MATH TO FIGURE OUT HOW FAST I'M ACTUALLY GOING. IT'S DISTRACTING TO ME AND IT'S A DANGER TO OTHER DRIVERS WHEN I'M GOING SLOWER THAN ALL THE OTHER TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF THE SPEEDOMETER BEING INCORRECT. I THINK THE TOLERANCE SHOULD BE LOWER. *NM
WHILE PARKING CAR AND APPLYING BRAKE, VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SLOWLY ACCELERATE AND PUSHED IN A TIN WALL HOUSING THE FURNANCE ROOM OF A GYM. CAR RESTED ON THE FURNANCE AND A GAS LINE. TOYOTA DIST. MANAGER SAID HE COULDN'T FIND ANY DEFECTS AND COULDN'T DUPLICATE PROBLEM SO SAID THEIR HANDS WERE TIED. NOTHING DONE. *JB

DT: THE CRUISE CONTROL TOOK OFF AND ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. WENT TWO YARDS AND HIT A TELEPHONE POLE. UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS DID DEPLOY. CONTACTED TOYOTA, THERE WERE SUPPOSED TO CALL BACK, COME AND LOOK AT VEHICLE. . THIS HAPPENED ON AUGUST 12, 2005. THE CONSUMER DID NOT WANT TO GIVE PHONE NUMBER.*AK
I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE, 4 CYLINDERS IN JULY 2005. THE FUEL ECONOMY IN THE CAR WAS APPROXIMATELY 21 TO 23 MPG 70% FREEWAY, 30% LOCAL. OR 330 MILES PER 15.5 GALLONS. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO TOYOTA DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THEY DIDN'T FIND ANY DEFECTS. BUT NOW, I AM STILL DRIVING THE CAR WITH ONLY 21 TO 23 MPG WHICH WAS NOT GAS EFFECTIVE. I KEPT ALL THE RECEIPT OF GAS FOR PROOF. *AK
I BOUGHT A NEW 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY SE 3.3 5 SPEED AUTO. IT HAS A HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A SLOW DOWN. WHEN TRYING TO MERGE IT IS VERY UNNERVING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE FIRST 3000 MILES AND A AIR/FUEL SENSOR WAS REPLACED. THE HESITATION IS STILL NOT PREDICTABLE AND STILL OCCURS. A SULFUR SMELL SOMETIMES OCCURS ALSO. *JB
I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2005 4-CYLINDER CAMRY IN 2004 AFTER OWING A 1988 WITH 256,000 MILES AND BEING EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH IT. HOWEVER, I WAS DISSATISFIED WITH MY NEW CAMRY ONLY AFTER HAVING IT FOR A WEEK WHEN I STARTED NOTICING HOW IT WOULD HESITATE FROM TAKING OFF FROM A DEAD STOP AND WHEN TURNING CORNERS. I STILL CAN??T FIGURE WHAT TURNING CORNERS HAS TO DO WITH SPEED. I HAD TO CHANGE MY DRIVING HABITS BECAUSE IT WAS GETTING DANGEROUS. I NOW HAVE TO ALLOW LONGER A FEW MORE SECONDS TO TURN IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC, IN CASE IT HESITATES SINCE IT DOESN'T DO THIS CONSISTENTLY. I TOOK IT IN TO TOYOTA, THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM, 60 MILES FROM WHERE I LIVE, TWICE AND THEY COULDN'T SEEM TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY SEEMED TO KNOW OF THE PROBLEM, DUE TO OTHERS REPORTING IT AND THEM SENSING IT THEMSELVES, BUT JUST ACKNOWLEDGED IT WASN'T AN ISSUE TO BE FIXED. THEY GAVE US THE NAME OF THEIR CUSTOMER RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE IN CALIFORNIA TO CONTACT, WHICH WE DID. WHEN FIRST CONTACTING HIM, HE TOO MADE IT SOUND LIKE IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT AND HE WOULD IMMEDIATELY TAKE CARE OF THIS ISSUE AND GET BACK WITH US. THE NEXT THING WE HEARD FROM HIM WAS THE SAME THING WE HAD ALREADY HEARD, THIS ISN'T A PROBLEM, THIS IS NORMAL, THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO FOR YOU. THIS MAY NOT BE PROBLEM FOR THEM BUT IT IS FOR ME AND IT SURE SOUNDS LIKE IT IS A PROBLEM FOR AN AWFUL LOT OF OTHERS OUT THERE THAT ARE COMPLAINING ON THIS WEBSITE TOO. DT: THE CALLER SAID TWO WEEKS AFTER SHE BOUGHT VEHICLE IT STALLED AT AN INTERSECTION. SHE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND THEY HAD IT FOR 2 DAYS. DEALER GOT IT STARTED AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. WHEN THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD HER TO DRIVE IT, AND IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN ,TO LEAVE IT WHERE IT WAS, AND THEY WILL COME AND GET IT. THE SECOND TIME THEY HAD IT THEY REPLACED THE CRANK SENSOR, BUT SAID THEY FOUND NOTHING AGAIN AFTER DOING A DIAGNOSTIC. MANUFACTURER SAID THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED. THE CALLER STILL HAD CONCERNS ABOUT THE VEHICLE BEING SAFE. CALLER HAS ONE CLOSE CALL.*AK
PURCHASED NEW CAR - NOTED SPEEDOMETER READING 9% OFF - VERIFIED VIA STOPWATCH/MILE MARKER METHOD, GPS, AND RADAR. DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE ALLOWABLE AT ANY SPEED IS PLUS OR MINUS 10% (I.E. SPEEDOMETER SAYS 70 GOING 63 TO 77 MPH). SAFETY HAZARD IN TRAFFIC FLOW PLUS I AM SPENDING LOTS OF TIME WHILE DRIVING WATCHING SPEEDOMETER AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW FAST I AM GOING AND WHAT THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE SHOULD BE POINTING AT TO BE CORRECT. MANUFACTURER AND DEALERSHIP HAVE REFUSED TO ATTEMPT TO CORRECT PROBLEM. NOT SURE WHAT THE FEDERAL REGULATIONS ALLOW, BUT 10% DELTA SEEMS EXCESSIVE. DEALERSHIP NOTED THAT A NEW CAR OF THE SAME MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR FOR THE LOT WAS ALSO TESTED AND HAD THE SAME SPEEDOMETER DELTA FROM ACTUAL. NOT SURE IF THIS IS A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA CAMRY. 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA WAS TESTED AND FOUND TO BE ABOUT 5%. ALSO NOTED THAT THE ODOMETER READING IS INCORRECT BY A SIMILAR PERCENTAGE (I.E. ODOMETER READING NOT ACCURATE FOR ACTUAL MILEAGE ON VEHICLE).*JB
2005 TOYOTA CAMRY SE DEVELOPED A PROBLEM WITH BUILDING UP ACCELERATION AFTER SLOWING DOWN.*MR WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A LOW SPEED THE CONSUMER NOTICED HESITATION WHILE TRYING TO REGAIN SPEED. *NM
PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE AND I AM EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. AT ABOUT 24-30 MPH IT WILL REV TO ABOUT 3000-4000 RPMS BEFORE IT SWITCHES TO 2ND GEAR. ALSO WHEN SLOWING DOWN THE CAR WILL JERK INTO GEAR. ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN TRYING TO PASS CARS IT WILL JUST IGNORE MY REQUEST FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CAR!!! TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY STATED IT IS WORKING AS DESIGNED. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND TOYOTA NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. JB
THE CAR STARTED WANDERING AND WEARING TIRES ABOUT 5000 MILES ,I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT. I GOT IT LINED UP, THE CAR STARTED WANDERING AGAIN, THE DEALER SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG THAT THEY CAN SEE. BUT THE CAR IS WEARING TIRES OUT ON THE INSIDE FRONT. THE CAR IS WANDERING FROM SIDE TO SIDE PRETTY BAD AND IF YOU HIT A DIP IN THE ROAD IT WILL FOLLOW IT. IF THAT IS TOYOTA'S ANSWER TO A GOOD RIDE THEN I WONT BUY ANOTHER ONE. I ALSO HAVE A GAS PEDAL PLAY PROBLEM. *JB
IT IS SURPRISING THAT THERE IS ONLY NOW PUBLICITY ABOUT TOYOTA BRAKES. I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. IF I HIT A BUMP OR GOES OVER WASHBOARD PAVEMENT WHILE BRAKING, THE BRAKES GO OUT FOR A SECOND OR SO. DT: ON JULY 29, 2005 WHEN THE CONSUMER PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THIS HAD OCCURRED 3 TIMES. THE VEHICLE HAS A LITTLE OVER 1000 MILES ON IT. THE MANUFACTURER GAVE THE CONSUMER A REFERENCE NUMBER TO GIVE TO THE DEALER WHEN HE TAKES THE VEHICLE TO THEM. *NM
SINCE THE FIRST MONTH I PURCHASED MY 2005 4-CYLINDER CAMRY THE ACCELERATION PEDAL DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY ENGAGE AND THE TRANSMISSION OCCASIONALLY SLIPS THEN MAKES CONTACT FOR ACCELERATION. ESPECIALLY TROUBLESOME IN TIGHT AREAS SUCH AS PARKING LOTS WHERE I HAVE HAD CLOSE CALLS WITH OTHER VEHICLES CLOSE TO HITTING ME DUE TO THIS HESITATION. MY TOYOTA DEALER AFTER ABOUT 4 - 5 VISITS HAVE STATED THAT SINCE OTHER CAMRY'S IN PARKING LOT DO THE SAME, IT IS O.K. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES ON TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT THAT TRANSMISSION HAS SLIPPED MAKING IT HARD TO MOVE ALONG. THE DEALERSHIP DID REPLACE A SOLENOID VALVE AFTER CONTINUALLY BADGERING THEM AND THAT DIDN'T HELP. THEY SAY PROBLEM COULD BE IN COMPUTER BOX TO TRANSMISSION (THAT CANNOT BE ACCESSED BY TECHNICIANS) IS SET AT FACTORY AND CANNOT BE ADJUSTED. ALL THIS COMPUTERIZED HAS MADE IT DIFFICULT TO MAKE ANY CORRECTIONS THAT A CUSTOMER COMPLAINS ABOUT. THE OTHER ISSUE IS THE THUMPING NOISE ON DRIVER AND PASSENGER WINDOWS MAKE WHEN GOING DOWN. AGAIN THEY SAID THAT OTHER CAMRY'S DO IT, SO IT IS FINE. THAT IS NOT A WAY TO BUILD A CAR. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE FIRST MONTH I PURCHASED VEHICLE. *JB
WE PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY IN 2005. THE FIRST DAY I DROVE IT THE CAR HESITATED ON ACCELERATION TO CHANGE LANES IT WAS LUCKY THAT IT DIDN'T CAUSE A WRECK. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP (I DON'T REMEMBER WHY) BUT I ASKED THEM TO CHECK IT AND THE GUY I TALKED TO JUST SAID IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE FUEL INJECTION. THE GUY DIDN'T OFFER TO CHECK IT, HE JUST MADE THAT STATEMENT. THE HESITATION HAPPENS ANY TIME AND IT ALWAYS FEELS LIKE SOMEONE IS GOING TO REAR END US WHILE THE CAR IS DECIDING WHAT IT WANTS TO DO. ON THE FREEWAYS IN CALIFORNIA PEOPLE GO 70 MILES AN HOUR THAT MAKES IT A HAZARD TO DRIVE A TOYOTA ON THE FREEWAY. THE TOYOTA ALSO HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN, SOMETIMES WHEN I HAVE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PREPARING TO STOP THE ENGINE SEEMS TO BE TRYING TO OVERRIDE THE BRAKE TO KEEP GOING. IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR IS TRYING TO INCREASE THE SPEED WHEN I AM TRYING TO SLOW DOWN. I HAVE BEEN CONCERNED ABOUT IT BUT I JUST FIGURED TOYOTA WAS NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. NOW MY HUSBAND DOES NOT WANT ME TO DRIVE THE TOYOTA. *TR
MY 2005 4-CYLINDER TOYOTA CAMRY HAS DELAYED ACCELERATOR AND ROUGH SHIFTING OF TRANSMISSION. BY DELAYED ACCELERATOR I MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO PRESS ACCELERATOR PEDAL ABOUT 1/4" TO 1/2" BEFORE ENGINE ENGAGES. THIS HAS BEEN DANGEROUS IN PARKING LOTS WHERE SLOW DRIVING MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP ENGINE AT SAFE SPEED. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO SHIFTS ROUGHLY AND DOWNSHIFTS HARD WHEN DECELERATING DOWN A HILL. I CONTACTED DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASE MY VEHICLE AND SAY THAT IS THE WAY IT IS SINCE IT IS COMPUTERIZED. SINCE THERE ARE NO CABLES TO ADJUST, I AM OUT OF LUCK. I ALSO CONTACTED 800 NUMBER FOR TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY WERE NO HELP. THEY DID MENTION THAT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR SAME PROBLEM ON THE CAMRY V-6. IT SEEMS THAT THE 4-CYLINDER HAS SAME PROBLEM BUT NOT ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO WARRANT A TECHNICAL BULLETIN.
A DRIVEABILITY CONCERN WHERE THE OPERATOR INTENTIONALLY APPLIES THE THROTTLE PEDAL, IN EXPECTATION THAT THE VEHICLE WILL ACCELERATE, AND THEN EXPERIENCES A DELAY OR HESITATION IN VEHICLE RESPONSE. I REPORTED THE HESITATION THE NEXT DAY AFTER PURCHASING THE TOYOTA AND THE SALES PERSON SAID IT JUST NEEDED SOME ITEM TO WARM UP. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE READ ANYONE ELSE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH HESITATION. MOST PEOPLE SAY THE CAR TAKES OFF FAST ON IT'S OWN. MINE ALMOST GOT MY FAMILY KILLED SEVERAL TIMES NOT GETTING ON THE FWY WHEN NEEDED AND CAUSED ANGRY MORTOREST BECAUSE THEY ALMOST RAN INTO US. I OR MY HUSBAND WOULD STEP ON THE GAS TO PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC OR GET ON THE FWY IN CA. WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 2005, JUST READ THE OTHER PERSONS COMMENT AND DECIDED TO REPORT IT ALSO. WHEN COASTING TO A STOP FOR A TRAFFIC SIGNAL CAR COASTS TO BELOW 40 MILES A HOUR, GET A SLIGHT JERK LIKE THE CAR IS FEEDING GAS BY ITSELF AND DOES NOT COAST DOWN, IF I DO NOT HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL CAR WILL CONTINUE TO GO. 8JB

DT: CONTACT STATES AFTER READING THE OWNER'S MANUAL IT STATED NOT TO LET THE ENGINE IDLE FOR MORE THAN 20 MINUTES AT A TIME. CONTACT DID NOT KNOW THIS AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. HE HAS CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER OF THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE MANAGER FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS LISTED IN THE MANUAL. WAS SITTING IN MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE IN PARK IDLING WHEN I PLACED IT IN DRIVE IT SURGED QUICKLY FORWARD AND HIT MY BRICK GARAGE WALL
DT: 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE, CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT HOLD VEHICLE BACK. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM ON LEVEL GROUND OR UP HILL. WHILE DRIVING HOME THE CAR GAVE ME A FEELING OF AN IMMINENT STALL AS I WOULD PRESS THE GAS PEDAL FROM A DEAD STOP, AFTER COASTING AND UPON TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO CHANGE LANES. I HAD AN OCCASION TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER TO PICK UP SOME ACCESSORIES THAT I WAS MISSING INITIALLY. I BROUGHT MY DRIVING EXPERIENCE TO THE ATTENTION OF THE SALESPERSON WHO IN TURN ASKED A SERVICE TECHNICIAN. THE EXPLANATION I WAS GIVEN WAS THAT 'THIS YEAR MODEL CAR DOES NOT HAVE A LINKAGE CABLE BUT A SENSOR AT THE GAS PEDAL; UPON DEPRESSING THE PEDAL, IT SENDS A SIGNAL TO THE COMPUTER AND THE COMPUTER DOES ALL THE REST, HENCE THE HESITATION IS NORMAL'.
