TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE BRAKING TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT, BOTH THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR BECAUSE OF HIS FOOT, A SIZE TEN, WAS FAIRLY LARGE. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THERE WAS AN UNUSUAL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS AND ONCE THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE, THE BRAKES WERE UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH SPACE BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 40,000. UPDATED 05/13/10. *LJ
2006 COROLLA 4DR SEDAN HAS A FAULTY ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (COMPUTER) THAT CAUSES COMPLETE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. DIAGNOSTIC CODE P2716 FOR THIS MODEL YEAR GETS 40,000 HITS ON GOOGLE AND YET THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS DEFECTIVE PART. DEALER REPLACEMENT WITH UPDATED ECU PART COST ME $830 ON THIS 3-YEAR OLD CAR (WE'RE AT 83K MILES SO OUT OF WARRANTY). *CN
2006 TOYOTA LE - A FEW MONTHS BACK WE HAD A STALL OUT THAT WE TOOK IN TO TOYOTA DEALER TRICOUNTY TOYOTA, LIMERICK, PA AND THEY SAID IT WAS CAUSED BY COMPUTER MODULE. NOW WE HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LITE ON THAT WE HAVE TO TAKE IN. WITH THE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS ASKED FOR THE BRAKE OVERRIDE SYSTEM WHICH THEY WOULD NOT PUT IN AS IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM THEY SAID IS THIS CAR ON THE RECALL LIST FOR THE FUEL PUMP AND BRAKE PROBLEMS? I DO NOT SEE IT LISTED ANYWHERE, AND EMAILED TO TOYOTA ABOUT THIS TONITE. *TR
FAULTY PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID OR ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE FOR THE TRANSMISSION ON A 2006 COROLLA TOYOTA STARTING WITH A 17337 MILES. DASHBOARD INDICATE ENGINE LOGO WITH "CHECK" LIGHT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH THROUGH AN INTERSECTION WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE BODY SHOP TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED BASED ON THE SPEED AT WHICH THE IMPACT OCCURRED. THE MANUFACTURER REQUESTED PICTURES TO DETERMINE WHY THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS INVESTIGATING THE FAILURE AS WELL. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 64,000.
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTO COROLLA ,ENGINE EG053-06. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH IT BEING A SLOW CRANK OR NO START CONDITION, AS LISTED ON THE TSB UPDATE HOMEPAGE. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS, AND PURCHASED A NEW BATTHERY, TESTED THE STARTER,IT WAS FINE, ALTERNATOR WAS FINE. TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC WHO SAW THE PROBLEM AND PULLED UP THE TSB WEBSITE AND IT IS ON THERE OWN SITE. THE TITLE OF THE NOTICE IS 1ZZ-FE ENGINE "NO START" OR EXTENDED CRANK" CONDITION. IT AFFECTS COROLLAS AND MATRIXES. SURPRISE HERE. ANYWAY, IT STATES THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY MANUFACTURING PROCESS HAS BEEN IMPROVED TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION. THE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 60,000 MILES. I HAVE 66,000. I THINK CONSUMERS SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS SINCE THEY KNOW IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM OR IT WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN ON THEIR SITE. NOW THEY WANT 1200.00 TO FIX THIS. OBVIOUSLY THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE TO START WITH OR THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO CORRECTED IT.IT IS ALSO IRONIC THAT THE OTHER INVESTIGATON YOU ARE DOING IS ON THE SAME YEARS AND MODELS, COROLLA AND MATRIX. MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON INDICATING P2716-TRANS SHIFT SOLENOID ERROR-REFER TO TSB FOR ECM REPLACEMENT. MY MECHANIC EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THIS WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY FOR THE 2005 MODEL YEAR BUT I WAS TOLD BY THE TOYOTA DEALER THAT THE MFG DATE OF MY CAR WAS 12/2005.
THERE WAS NO WARNING. DRIVE CAR 400 MILES PER WEEK. ONE DAY I DROVE CAR TO COMMUTER PARKING LOT WITH NO PROBLEM, THAT EVENING IT STARTED FINE THEN STALLED WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR. TOOK A WHILE TO START THE 2ND TIME AND STALLED AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 4 TIMES THEN I HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER. DEALER SAID THE ENGINE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WITH NO REAL EXPLANATION. I EVEN ASKED TO SPEAK TO THE MECHANIC WHO COULD NOT PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION OTHER THAN IT HAPPENS. COMPUTER WAS REPLACED AND THE CAR RUNS FINE. THEY SAID IT WAS ONLY WARRANTIED FOR 1 YEAR. AS I WAS AWAY FROM HOME I HAD TO RENT A CAR FOR 2 DAYS WHILE THEY MADE THE REPAIRS. *TR
ONE SATURDAY AFTERNOON, MY 2006 COROLLA WITH ONLY 32K MILEAGE ON IT JUST STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY (I-880 SOUTH BOUND) IN OAKLAND, CA JUST AFTER THE OAK EXIT. TO MAKE THINGS WORSE, THE AREA WHERE IT STOPPED HAS NO SHOULDER. THE CHP PUSHED THE CAR TO THE NEARBY OFF RAMP AND I HAD IT TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN HAYWARD. THE SERVICE ATTENDANT TOLD ME MY CAR HAD A COMPUTER PROBLEM WHICH HAPPENED IN 2005 AND 2006 MODELS OF COROLLA. THEY DID SOME FIXES ON IT. WHEN I WAS PICKING IT UP, SETTLED THEIR EXORBITANT FEES AND WAIT ON THE SIDE FOR THE CAR, IT TOOK ME OVER 20 MINUTES TO WAIT. IT TURNED OUT THE CAR BROKE AGAIN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOLD ME TO WAIT ANOTHER 15 MINUTES SO THEY CAN FIX SOMETHING IN THE COMPUTER OF THE CAR. MY CONCERN IS, IF THEY KNEW THERE WERE SOME ISSUES WITH THEIR 2005 OR 2006 COROLLAS, THEY SHOULD HAVE NOTIFIED THE CUSTOMERS TO PREVENT DANGEROUS THINGS TO HAPPEN. AND WHY WOULD THE CAR WITH ONLY 32K MILES ON IT SUDDENLY STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY? IT WOULD BE A DIFFERENT STORY IF THE MILEAGE IS OVER 100K. *TR
ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) IS DEFECTIVE. CAR LOSES POWER AND SOMETIMES DIES WHILE DRIVING, ALSO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS VERY HARD GOING INTO EACH GEAR. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET FINDS THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH MANY TOYOTA MODELS FOR 2006-2007. DEALER HAS OFFERED A WARRANTY FIX FOR CARS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY ONLY. THIS IS A SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY ISSUE AND IS DUE TO A DEFECTIVE PART , NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THIS ISSUE SHOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A RECALL A LONG TIME AGO! ITS TIME THAT OUR GOVERNMENT WATCHDOGS START PROTECTING THE CONSUMER, NOT THE CORPORATIONS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO YIELD FOR A VEHICLE AHEAD OF HIM WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL FROM SPEEDS OF 10 MPH. THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE DID THIS REPEATEDLY UNTIL COMING TO A STOP WITHOUT DRIVER INTERFERENCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD SEND AN INVESTIGATOR TO FURTHER EVALUATE THE FAILURE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY REFUSED ANY REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE UNTIL THEY WERE CONTACTED BY THE MANUFACTURER WITH A DETERMINATION OF THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 80,640.
CAR: 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S. PROBLEM: UNEXPECTED REDUCED BRAKING POWER. OCCURRENCE: 1 TO 2 TIMES EVERY 6 MONTHS. DESCRIPTION: BRAKES ONLY APPLY ABOUT 50 TO 70 % NORMAL STOPPING POWER. LOW BRAKING POWER UNTIL BRAKE PEDAL HAS BEEN DEPRESSED SEVERAL TIMES. NEAR REAR-END COLLISION OCCURRED ABOUT 3 MILES FROM HOME AT ABOUT 7:10 AM ON 3/3/10. *TR
MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA BEGAN STALLING ON THE HIGHWAY LAST NIGHT AND ULTIMATELY LEFT ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER SITTING FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND TRYING TO RESTART, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WOULD SOMETIMES RESPOND AND OTHER TIMES WOULD NOT MOVE WHEN THE KEY WAS TURNED TO START THE ENGINE. WHEN THE GAUGE DOESN'T MOVE THE CAR WILL NOT START. WHEN THE GAUGE DOES MOVE THE CAR SOMETIMES STARTS BUT WILL ONLY GO A FEW FEET BEFORE STALLING AGAIN. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON PERMANENTLY. THERE IS NO SIGN OF OVER HEATING OR OF AN OIL LEVEL PROBLEM. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT A GARAGE AWAITING ANALYSIS. *TR

WHEN THE SHIFTER WAS IN THE "DRIVE" POSITION THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK WITHOUT WARNING. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RELEASED IMMEDIATELY ONCE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON FORTY SEPARATE OCCASIONS FOR DIFFERENT COMPONENT DEFECTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 47,000. UPDATED 07/28/10. *LJ

THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON AND THE VEHICLE STARTED. THE VEHICLE STALLED WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO RESTART IT LATER THAT DAY. THE CONTACT DID TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT HIS ELECTRONIC MARGINAL WAS NOT READING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE CONTACT THEN CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY INFORMED HIM THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL AND THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE CONTACT INFORMED HIS INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED; HOWEVER, IT IS AT AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 90,000.

WHEN SHE DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC, IT SHUT OFF FOUR TIMES AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD APPEAR ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ECM AND MASS AIR FILTER CENSOR AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59900 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60000.
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) LETTER TO TOYOTA 02/24/10 I'VE HAD INTERMITTENT ISSUES WITH MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA ACCELERATING UNEXPECTEDLY. MY DEALER SAID THERE'S NO PROBLEM, BUT AFTER EXPERIENCING A LIFE-THREATENING SPINOUT ON THE HIGHWAY LAST WEEKEND (THE 4TH SUCH INCIDENCE), I'M FRIGHTENED TO DRIVE THIS CAR. IT KEEPS GETTING BANGED UP FROM THESE PROBLEMS AND MY INSURANCE RATES ARE GOING SKY-HIGH. BUT MORE SERIOUSLY, I DRIVE 36,000+ MILES PER YEAR, WHICH MEANS THAT MY EXPOSURE TO RISK IS GREATER THAN MOST DRIVERS. WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? WILL YOU COMPENSATE MY DAUGHTER IF I DIE AS A RESULT OF YOUR PARTS FAILING WHEN THEY ARE USED AS INTENDED? I'VE CONTACTED THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY BOARD AND THE INDIANA STATE POLICE HAVE RECORDED SUNDAY NIGHT'S INCIDENT. IRONICALLY, I WAS COMING BACK FROM CHICAGO WHERE I HAD HELPED MY EX-WIFE TO PURCHASE A 2008 TOYOTA COROLLA. I'M ALSO WORRIED ABOUT RISKS TO HER LIFE, AND MY DAUGHTER'S, BUT SHE TRUSTS YOUR REPUTATION MORE THAN MY ADVICE. THANKFULLY FOR ME, I HAD JUST HAD MY BRAKES REPLACED AND TIRES ROTATED BY MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER LAST WEEK. HAD THAT NOT HAPPENED, I WOULD BE DEAD TODAY FROM THE SPINOUT OFF THE HIGHWAY ON SUNDAY, BECAUSE WITHOUT GOOD BRAKES, I WOULD HAVE VEERED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND NOT BEEN ABLE TO PULL THE CAR AWAY TO THE OTHER SIDE. I DO NOT RECALL HITTING ANYTHING. BUT STRANGELY, NOW THERE ARE 2 DENTS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR OF THE CAR AND THE TRUNK FAILS TO LATCH PROPERLY. IT'S AS IF THE METAL BODY OF THE CAR WAS PULLED SO FAST THAT IT BENT. THERE ARE NO POSTS OR TREES IN THE AREA THAT I COULD HAVE HIT, AND I CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY IN DAYLIGHT TO PHOTOGRAPH THE SCENE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT GEAR IN REVERSE THE GEARS FAILED. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT IN REVERSE AND IT LUNGED FORWARD. SHE ALSO NOTICED THAT IT WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO FIRST, SECOND, OR THIRD GEAR. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL GARAGE WHO STATED THAT THE SOLENOID CAUSED THE FAILURE TO OCCUR. THE MANUFACTURER FILED REPORT NUMBER 1002148-131 AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE; THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. SHE WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 101,044.
I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA LE. EARLIER THIS MONTH, I LOST ALL BUT AN EXTREMELY MINIMAL AMOUNT OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. I NURSED THE CAR TO MY HOME AND CONTACTED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP BY TELEPHONE AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM. OVER THE PHONE, THE SERVICE PERSON WITH WHOM I SPOKE SAID THAT HE BELIEVED THE PROBLEM WAS WITH ONE OF THE CAR'S COMPUTERS. HE INDICATED THAT THE PROBLEM I DESCRIBED WAS NOT UNIQUE, BUT THAT I SHOULD BRING IT IN FOR FORMAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. WHEN I HAD THE CAR TOWED INTO THE DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE PERSONNEL VERIFIED THAT ONE OF THE CAR'S COMPUTERS HAD TO BE REPLACED. I SPOKE WITH TWO OF THE SERVICE PERSONNEL AT THE TIME AND BOTH GAVE ME THE IMPRESSION THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT UNUSUAL FOR THAT YEAR'S COROLLA LE. I BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT QUESTIONS REGARDING TOYOTA'S PROBLEMS AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT SOME OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS COULD HAVE AN ELECTRONIC ORIGIN. *TR
I RECENTLY ENCOUNTERED A POWER LOSS WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA, THE OPPOSITE OF THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM THAT IS IN THE NEWS. AFTER STOPPING TO FILL UP THE CAR WITH GASOLINE, I COULD ONLY GET THE CAR TO GO ABOUT 5 TO 10 MILES AN HOUR WHEN I USED THE ACCELERATION PEDAL. DESPITE USING THE HAZARD LIGHTS, I WAS CONCERNED THAT SOMEONE WAS GOING TO RAM INTO THE CAR AS I LIMPED INTO A GARAGE TO HAVE THE CAR LOOKED AT. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER WHO UNCOVERED (AFTER A COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM CHECK) AN INTERNAL ECU FAILURE...SOME SORT OF COMPUTER CIRCUIT FAILURE. THE ONLY ADVANCED WARNING ABOUT A COMPUTER FAILURE THAT I CAN RECALL RECEIVING OCCURRED EARLIER IN THE MORNING WHEN I NOTICED THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WEREN'T WORKING RIGHT. THE ECU WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER. I DO NOT HAVE THE OLD PART. *TR
DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEED IN TRAFFIC THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED AND THE ENGINE LOST POWER. IN LOS ANGELES TRAFFIC THIS CAN BE DEADLY. I WAS NEARLY REAR ENDED TWICE DUE TO THE INABILITY TO EVEN HAVE THE CAR ROLL TO A SAFE STOP. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED AS A KNOWN ECM FAILURE AND MANY OWNER FORUMS HAVE SAID THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN AND COMMON FAILURE. *TR
MY 2006 TOYOTA MATRIX COMPLETELY STOPPED RUNNING WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT TO WORK TO VIRGINIA FROM MARYLAND ON FEB. 18, 2010. I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART IT AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. HE INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THE ENGINE CONTROL- ENGINE NO START CONDITION AND THAT TOYOTA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR SINCE IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AGAIN TO 355 TOYOTA AND AM WAITING TO HEAR FROM THEM REGARDING THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. *TR

MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA EXPERIENCED A FAILURE WITH THE ECM THAT CAUSED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON AND REPORT A P2716 ERROR CODE. THE PROBLEM CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO LOCK UP SPONTANEOUSLY AND SHIFT VERY HARD. MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO READ THE CODE HAD AN ADVANCED ODC SCANNER THAT INDICATED THE CAR WAS IDLING WHEN THE PROBLEM SUDDENLY HAPPENED. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP PERSONNEL INFORMED ME THAT SEVERAL CARS HAD BEEN COMING IN WITH THIS REPORT, BUT THE COMPANY WAS ONLY ADDRESSING THE ISSUE FOR CUSTOMERS WHO WERE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. SEVERAL CUSTOMERS WHO DISCUSSED THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET REPORTED THAT THEIR CAR WOULD SUDDENLY STALL WHILE ON THE ROAD, AND IT SEEMS THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE ISSUING YET ANOTHER RECALL, BUT ISN'T. MY TOYOTA COROLLA HAS ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY SEVERAL TIMES, GENERALLY WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS AROUND 32 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED IT, I REAR-ENDED A PICKUP TRUCK AFTER A RED LIGHT HAD TURNED GREEN. THE THIRD TIME, NOTHING WAS BROKEN - I WAS THE ONLY PERSON ON THE ROAD - BUT IT SCARED THE BEJESUS OUT OF ME. I CALLED TOYOTA TO COMPLAIN AND THEY SAID THAT THERE IS NO RECALL ON MY CAR. MY BELIEF IS THAT THERE ARE ACCELERATOR / ELECTRONICS PROBLEMS WITH THE TOYOTA COROLLA THAT THEY ARE NOT ADMITTING.
THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT I'VE EXPERIENCE WITH AN ENGINE SURGE AND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 25MPH TOWARDS AN INTERSECTION. THE LIGHT AHEAD WAS RED, SO I TOOK MY FOOT ENTIRELY OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND LET THE CAR COAST. IT GRADUALLY SLOWED DOWN AS IT ALWAYS DOES, NOTHING UNUSUAL. AS I CAME UP ON THE RED LIGHT I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND ROLLED TO A SOFT STOP. I WAITED AT A RED LIGHT WITH MY FOOT RESTING ENTIRELY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ALL OF A SUDDEN--THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THE SOUND--THE ENGINE ROARED AND THE CAR TRIED TO RACE FORWARD DESPITE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE TO NO AVAIL. THE CAR WAS FIGHTING AGAINST ME WANTING TO RACE FORWARD. THERE WAS A STOPPED CAR AHEAD OF ME AND I WAS TRYING NOT TO CRASH INTO IT. IN DESPERATION I STOOD UP ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD AND THE CAR SKID. I HAD TO STEER INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO AVOID REAR ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND THE CAR CAME TO A STOP DIAGONAL ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO TOYOTA FOR A SECOND TIME. DEALER RAN EXTENSIVE TESTS ON ELECTRONIC AND ENGINE SYSTEMS AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THEY STATED THAT THE COMPUTER "HISTORY" SHOWED NO RECORD OF THE INCIDENT. THEY OFFERED NO EXPLANATION NOR ANY REMEDY. I AM FRUSTRATED BEYOND BELIEF THAT TOYOTA IS HIDING BEHIND "WE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG" AND IS NOT TRYING HARDER TO FIND THE CAUSE. THERE ARE NO FLOOR MATS IN MY CAR, AND THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE GAS PEDAL. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE VERY CLEAR THAT MY FOOT WAS ENTIRELY OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL FOR AT LEAST 15 SECONDS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. I AM CONVINCED THAT THIS INCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY A COMPUTER MIS-FIRE OR ELECTRONIC MALFUNCTION THAT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO OPEN FULL-THROTTLE WHILE THE CAR WAS STOPPED AND BRAKES ENGAGED. I HAVE OWNED MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S WITH A 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION SINCE JULY 2006. IN THAT TIME I HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY 5 INCIDENCES WHEN THE ENGINE RACED UNEXPECTEDLY. THIS HAS ALWAYS OCCURRED WHEN I HAD THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED AND WAS BRAKING. I HAVE THOUGHT THAT MY RIGHT FOOT, WHICH I INTENDED TO BE ON THE CENTER OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, WAS ACTUALLY ON THE SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL SUCH THAT IT SIMULTANEOUSLY CONTACTED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS EXPLANATION IS PROBLEMATIC IN THAT EVEN WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED, IT IS STILL HIGHER THAN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE ONLY WAY I COULD BE DEPRESSING BOTH THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME IS FOR MY FOOT TO BE TWISTED AND OFF CENTER AT THE SAME TIME. MAYBE THIS IS POSSIBLE, I DON'T KNOW. WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS IS THAT THE ENGINE RACES(MAYBE 4000 TO 5000 RPM) BUT SINCE THE CLUTCH IS ALREADY DEPRESSED AND MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR DOES NOT SPEED UP. USUALLY THE ENGINE ONLY RACES FOR A SECOND OR TWO AND I DON'T KNOW HOW IT GETS SETTLED DOWN--MAYBE I REPOSITION MY FOOT A LITTLE--I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENS BECAUSE IT IS ALWAYS UNEXPECTED AND HAPPENS SO QUICKLY I AM LEFT CONFUSED AND SCARED. I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. ON 01-29-2010, I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA DOWN THE ROAD. SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, THE ENGINE STALLED. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT ON THE FREEWAY OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I ENDED UP HAVING MY CAR TOWED TO TOYOTA OF EL CAJON WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED AS A DEFECTIVE ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE). THEY REPLACED THE ECM FOR $841.00 WHICH FIXED THE PROBLEM. AN ECM FAILING ON A NEW CAR AFTER 3 1/2 YEARS IS VERY UNUSUAL (THEY ARE ENGINEERED TO LAST THE LIFE OF THE CAR). I WENT ON LINE AND WAS STUNNED TO FIND THAT ECM FAILURES WERE A KNOWN PROBLEM AND FREQUENTLY FAILED ON 2006 AND SOME EARLIER TOYOTA COROLLAS. TOYOTA EVEN CHANGED/RE-ENGINEERED THE ECMS AFTER 2006 MODELS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY OF THESE ECMS HAVE FAILED NATION WIDE AND WHY NO RECALL HAS BEEN DONE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I'VE TRIED TO GET AHOLD OF TOYOTA CORPORATE BUT I CAN'T GET THROUGH TO A PERSON AND THEY HAVE NOT ANSWERED MY E-MAIL BACK (GOING ON TWO WEEKS SINCE I SENT IT TO THEM). *TR

I BACKED MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA INTO A FRIEND'S DRIVEWAY, AND THEN PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE TO STRAIGHTEN IT A BIT. THE CAR SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING SHOT ACROSS THE STREET (PERHAPS AT 45-50 MPH), WENT OVER A 6" HIGH CEMENT RETAINING CURBING, AND ACROSS A LAWN INTO ANOTHER DRIVEWAY. ALL THE WHILE I HAD MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE (NOT THE GAS PEDAL). I SWERVED THE WHEEL TO AVOID HITTING A TELEPHONE POLE, AND THE HOUSE. I FINALLY GOT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, AND AT LAST THE BRAKES ENGAGED, AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR AVOIDING A PICK-UP TRUCK IN THE DRIVEWAY AND A TREE. DURING THIS ENTIRE TIME THE ENGINE WAS LOUDLY REVVING. OTHER THAN 3 SHREDDED TIRES AND 2 RUINED RIMS, THE CAR SEEMS TO BE INTACT. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA AND HOPE FOR A SUCCESSFUL RESOLUTION. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, HOWEVER, SAID THAT SINCE IT IS NOT UNDER RECALL THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. MEANWHILE I WILL BE FEARFUL EVERY TIME I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL, WHICH I HAVE YET TO DO! 3 NEW TIRES AND 2 NEW RIMS IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY - IT COULD HAVE BEEN MY LIFE! I REALIZED I WOULD SOON BE APPROACHING THE CAR AHEAD OF ME, SO I LOOKED IN MY MIRRORS AND OVER BOTH SHOULDERS TO DETERMINE THE LOCATIONS OF OTHER VEHICLES. I WANTED TO CHANGE LANES SO THAT I HAD MORE TIME TO ATTEMPT OTHER CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. WHEN I BEGAN THE LANE CHANGE AND WHILE MY VEHICLE WAS CONTINUING TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE SPUN OUT AND I HIT THE CENTER DIVIDE HEAD-ON. THE ACCIDENT STALLED THE MOTOR. A HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER ARRIVED ON SCENE, BUT AFTER ARRIVING HAD TO LEAVE TO GO TO A MAJOR-INJURY CRASH. *TR
