ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT TURNED ON TOGETHER. THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WHICH IS DUE TO THE CORROSION OF THE SENSORS ON THE RARE WHEELS. WITH ABS LIGHT TURNED ON, THE VEHICLE IS INCAPABLE OF APPLYING ABS WHEN REQUIRED DURING BRAKE, CREATING A HIGH SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE VEHICLE SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR AND FAILED TO GO BACK INTO DRIVE. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT IT WAS A SHIFT FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 112,000.
DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT INTERSTATE. SPEED LIMIT WAS 70 MPH. ROAD SURFACE WAS WET. DROVE OVER WATER, ENGINE ABRUPTLY SURGED, SIMILAR TO PUSHING ACCELERATOR TO FLOOR. FRONT END VEERED ABRUPTLY LEFT. I APPLIED BRAKES. CAR SPUN BACKWARDS. REAR RIGHT WHEEL MADE CONTACT WITH THE METAL CABLE-TYPE BARRIER ON LEFT SIDE OF HIGHWAY. *TR
I RAN INTO A LIGHT POLE IN A PARKING LOT ON JANUARY 13, 2013 IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, MAKING A TURN INTO PHARMACY PICKUP LANE BEHIND THE CVS STORE. THE DRIVER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I SUFFERED 8 FRACTURED RIBS AND NUMEROUS LACERATIONS. I SPENT 4 DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL, AND @ 3 WEEKS IN REHAB. I LOST APPROXIMATELY 4 WEEKS OF WORK. I STILL HAVE SCARS AND NECROTIC BUMPS ON MY CHEST WALL. VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. AS FAR AS I KNOW IT'S IN THE LANDFILL. I AM BEGGING ONLY FOR NO MORE RECALL NOTICES TO BE SENT TO ME.
ON JAN. 6TH, WE HIT A DEER ABOUT 10 MILES FROM HOME, AND THROUGH OUR INSURANCE HAD THE CAR TAKEN TO A LOCAL BODY SHOP WHERE IT WAS FIXED. REPAIRS WERE MADE AND A FEW MONTHS LATER THE ABS & BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND WOULDN'T TURN OFF. WE CONTACTED THE INSURANCE AND THEY TOLD US TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE BODY SHOP, WHERE THEY WOULD SEND TO TOYOTA FOR REPAIRS. TOYOTA INFORMED US THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES, THE BODY SHOP ORDERED A USED LKQ ABS ACTUATOR. TWO PARTS WERE ORDERED, THE FIRST ONE BEING INCORRECT, AND WAS INSTALLED AND WE PICKED UP THE CAR. A FEW MONTHS LATER, TO AVOID BEING IN A CAR ACCIDENT, I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND NOTICED THE CAR PULLED HARSHLY TO THE LEFT. I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT UNTIL MY SPOUSE HAD SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES TO AVOID A CAR PULLING OUT IN FRONT OF HER, THE CAR LOCKED UP, THEN STARTED TO SKID TO THE LEFT ALMOST CAUSING HER TO CRASH INTO THE VEHICLE SHE WAS TRYING TO AVOID. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA TO ASSESS THE PROBLEM, AGAIN, IT WAS THE ACTUATOR. ANOTHER LKQ USED ACTUATOR WAS PURCHASED AS PER OUR INSURANCE GMAC, AND IT WAS THE INCORRECT PART. THE CORRECT PART WAS ORDERED THE 2ND AND 3RD TIME, BUT BOTH WERE DAMAGED AND UNUSABLE. GMAC FINALLY ALLOWED THE BODY SHOP TO ORDER A NEW PART VIA TOYOTA. THIS IS THE 6TH ACTUATOR THAT WAS INSTALLED AND WE PICKED UP OUR CAR ON AUG. 30TH 2013. THE NEXT DAY, I DECIDED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO TEST IF THEY WERE WORKING ACCORDINGLY, AND WAS SURPRISED TO DISCOVER THAT THEY PULL EXTREMELY HARD TO THE LEFT. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND REALLY HOPE THAT THE PROBLEM CAN BE CORRECTED. IF THE BODY SHOP AND TOYOTA HAD REALIZED THE EXTENT OF THE REPAIRS FROM THE BEGINNING, THE VEHICLE WOULD'VE BEEN CONSIDERED TOTALED, THE CAR IS WORTH APPROX. $10,000. THE TOTAL OF ALL REPAIRS DONE SO FAR TO-DATE SINCE THE ACCIDENT ARE APPROX. $9500. *JS

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO A POLE, AND THEN A PARKED VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONSUMER STATED HER VEHICLE WAS RECALLED, THE FIRST TIME SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR A FLOOR MAT PROBLEM, AND THE SECOND TIME WAS FOR AN ACCELERATION PROBLEM. UPDATED 01/14/13
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE POWER WINDOW FAILED. THE WINDOW REMAINED CLOSED AND COULD NOT BE OPENED. THE OTHER WINDOWS IN THE VEHICLE WOULD OPERATE INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS WITHIN THE POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH. THE DEALER APPLIED A SPECIAL GREASE, HOWEVER THE FAILURE RECURRED AND WAS NOT RESOLVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,230. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,678.

THE CONTACTED STATED SHE NOTICED WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR WHEELS ALL AROUND WERE RUSTED AS SEEN THROUGH THE HUB CAPS, WHICH HAVE CUT OUT DIVISIONS THAT ALLOW THE WHEELS TO BE VIEWED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. THEIR ONLY RESPONSE WAS IT WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. THE CONTACT WROTE TO THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY OFFERED TO SELL THE CONTACT NEW WHEELS FOR $700 AND GIVE HER $300 BACK. DETERIORATING, DEFECTIVE RUSTING WHEELS ARE A SAFETY HAZARD AND ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT LIVES IN FLORIDA AND KEEPS THE VEHICLE IN A GARAGE. AT 68,000 MILES, THE CONTACT NOTICED THIS DEFECT. UPDATED 02/11/13

GAS INTAKE PIPE CRACKED SO WARNING LIGHT SHOWS ON DASH. TOYOTA WON'T FIX AS PAST THE THREE YEARS FROM DATE WE BOUGHT IT, WONDER IF A FIRE COULD HAPPEN? *TR
A WEEK AGO AFTER PICKING MY SON, I NOTICED THAT WHEN I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL OF MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA TO A CERTAIN POINT, MY WHOLE STEERING WHEEL WAS MOVING AND MAKING A GRINDING NOISE. I BROUGHT IT TO COPELAND TOYOTA THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED MY NEW CAR BACK IN 2008. MON. 9/10 I CALLED TO OBTAIN THE STATUS OF MY VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD A BOLT CAME OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AND THEY WERE "TRYING" TO GET THE BOLT BACK IN. NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR WOULD SAY A BOLT FALLS OUT A NEW BOLT GOES IN, NOT "TRYING" TO GET BACK IN. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE WORST THAT WOULD HAPPEN IS THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN. I FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA AS I AM NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY ( 1 YR AND 4,000 ML OVER). LATER MONDAY, TOYOTA STATED THAT THE BRACKET OF THE STEERING COLUMN IS THE ISSUE AND THE WHOLE UNIT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I ASKED THE SERVICE DEPT, I WAS DEALING WITH; IF THIS FELL UNDER "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" HE TOLD ME IT DID NOT. TUESDAY 9/11, I HEARD BACK THE TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE PAYING FOR THIS AND THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BILL, THAT IS JUST OVER $2000.00. I SPOKE WITH [XXX] AT THE DEALERSHIP WHO IS THE SERVICE MANAGER & HE HIMSELF MENTIONED THAT THIS IS A "UNIQUE CASE." REGARDLESS IF IT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR NOT, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, ONE THAT IS NOT FROM NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND I CERTAINLY DID NOT CREATE. I WAS TOLD THAT I HAVEN'T HAD MY CAR SERVICED THERE FOR A YEAR, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT DEALERSHIPS COSTS FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE IS EXTREMELY PRICEY AND I DIDN'T GO THERE FOR OIL CHANGES AND TIRE ROTATIONS, I DID BRING IT IN FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE. WHEN HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF ANY CAR COMPANY DROPPING YOUR STEERING COLUMN TO CHECK BOLTS DURING A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHECK? CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND PARKED IN A PARKING LOT ON A NORMAL DAY, I CAME BACK TO IT TURNED THE CAR ON AND SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT OF THE POWER WINDOW CONTROLS ON THE DRIVER SIDE, I TURNED OF THE CAR RIGHT AWAY, THE SMOKE GOT WORSE AND THEN THERE WERE FLAMES. I WAS PICKING UP A FRIEND FROM WORK AT A CAR DEALERSHIP AND SOME PEOPLE WORKING IN THE BODY SHOP HELP ME PUT OUT THE FIRE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THE WINDOW CONTROLS, DOOR HANDLE AND DOOR TO SOME EXTANT MELTED AND WERE DESTROYED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP PULLEY AS FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
MY VEHICLE STARTED EMITTING A HIGH-PITCHED WHINE NOISE ON 8/17/12. I WENT TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FIRST THING IN THE MORNING ON 8/18/12. THE SERVICE INTAKE PERSON VERIFIED THE PRESENCE OF A WHINE NOISE BUT COULD NOT IDENTIFY ITS CAUSE, SUSPECTING THAT IT MIGHT BE THE ALTERNATOR. HE COULD NOT TAKE CAR IN UNTIL MONDAY, 8/20/12, DUE TO A STAFF SHORTAGE. SINCE I WAS NOT TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, I CONTINUED DRIVING IT. LATE THAT SAME DAY, THE VEHICLE STARTED OVERHEATING. I PULLED TO THE CLOSEST AUTO SERVICE; THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND IMMEDIATELY REPLACED THE FAILED WATER PUMP. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS IS COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. I NEEDED AN OPERABLE VEHICLE AND THE DEALERSHIP WAS CLOSED AT THAT TIME. I BELIEVE I HAVE A RIGHT TO GET REIMBURSED FOR THIS REPAIR BY THE TOYOTA DEALER. *TR

THE CONTACT MERGED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED THE VEHICLE HAD OVERHEATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
WHEN DRIVING, STEERING REQUIRES CONSTANT ATTENTION AS IT DRIFTS BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT OFF CENTER MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. VEHICLE, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, WILL SOMETIMES GIVE THE FEEL OF HYDROPLANING OR BEING BUFFETED BY STRONG CROSS WINDS(VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS). THIS VEHICLE IS UNSAFE AS IT REQUIRES YOU TO FOCUS ALL OF YOUR ATTENTION DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE CAR JUST TRYING TO KEEP IT BETWEEN THE LINES. ANY DISTRACTION SUCH AS READING A HIGHWAY SIGN FOR 2 SECONDS CAN FIND YOU DRIFTING INTO ANOTHER LANE OR OFF THE ROAD. THE SUDDEN FEELING OF HYDRPLANING IS EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS AS ONE CAN OVERSTEER TO CORRECT.
I PURCHASED THE CAR USED 12/3/11 WITH 12,716 MILES. WITHIN 6 MONTHS I WOULD HEAR A GRINDING/SCREECHING NOISE WHEN STARTING THE CAR. THIS WOULD HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY ON COLD STARTS. I HAD TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE WITH THE DEALERSHIP FOR OVER A WEEK FOR THEM TO FINALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE. ON 7/13/12 THEY REPLACED THE TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY AND THE CAMSHAFT GEAR. TO DATE, THE CAR HAS ONLY 52,700 MILES AND THE NOISE APPEARS TO HAVE COME BACK. I HAVE CHECKED THE BATTERY, ALTERNATOR AND STARTER AND THEY ARE FINE. I HAD ORIGINALLY PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH 6 YEAR/100,000 MILES AND WAS TOLD THAT JANUARY 1, 2015 THAT EXPIRED. SO, I HAVE A DEFECTIVE CAR WITH CAMSHAFT ISSUE THAT RETURNS? I AM FRUSTRATED BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY STORIES OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS RE-OCCURRING ISSUE EVERY 30,000 MILES (HTTP://WWW.CARCOMPLAINTS.COM/TOYOTA/COROLLA/2009/ENGINE/ENGINE.SHTML). I KNOW THERE IS A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE CAMSHAFT, BUT FEEL IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL. NEITHER THE CUSTOMER SERVICE OR WARRANTY CARRIER ARE WILLING TO WORK WITH ME AND THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE ONE CAN BECOME STRANDED OR BLOW A ROD DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. *TR

THE CONTACT THEN POURED WATER DOWN THE DOOR PANEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER PLANNED ON DOING SO, BUT HAD NOT YET DONE THAT. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000.
VERY STRONG VIBRATION HAS BEEN PRESENT IN MY STEERING COLUMN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHICH TOLD ME IT WAS THE REAR STRUTS. REPLACED THEM $600.00. THE MECHANIC NOTED IN HIS NOTES THAT VIBRATION WAS STILL BAD UPON RELEASING THE CAR TO ME. I WAS TOLD I NEEDED NEW TIRES AND BALANCING. I TOOK IT ELSEWHERE AND HAD NEW TIRES AND BALANCING DONE. THE PROBLEM STILL PRESENT TODAY. I TOOK IT IN AGAIN TODAY AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NOW MY ROTERS. NEW PADS, ROTERS AND ANOTHER ALIGNMENT WITH REAR BRAKES CLEANED AND RE BALANCE ANOTHER $450.00. THIS WHOLE TIME I HAVE BEEN FEELING THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE STEERING COLUMN. NOW I LEARN THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION REGUARDING MY MAKE AND MODEL FOR THAT YEAR. I AM TO GET MY CAR BACK THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL WANT SOMETHING INVESTIGATED IF THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. *TR
I HAVE AUTOMATIC LOCKS AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THEM UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FROM INSIDE OR OUT IN THE UNLOCKED POSITION. ALL OTHER DOORS WORK NORMALLY. I TRIED USING MY KEY TO UNLOCK IT AND THAT ALSO FAILED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH A BROKEN CABLE WHICH THEY REPAIRED. IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *JB
MY AIR BEG LIGHT COME ON AND DON'T GO AWAY. I RECEIVE A LETTER FROM TOYOTA ABOUT AIR BEG RECALL. THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND SAY THEY WILL FIX IT. I WENT THERE AND THEY TOLD THEY DON'T HAVE THE PART AND THEY WILL ORDER IT AND TOLD ME TO WAIT. IS BEEN A YEAR AND THEY NEVER CALL ME BACK. I RECEIVE A SECOND LETTER FROM TOYOTA ABOUT THE SAME AIR BEG RECALL AND SO L CALL THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THEY SAY THE PART IS NOT AVAILABLE AND TELL ME TO WAIT. I DON'T THINK THEY DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. BECAUSE I'M DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH A DEFECTS CAR, I'M CONSTANTLY WORRY. I JUST WANT MY CAR TO BE FIX BEFORE IS TOO LATE.
I WAS DRIVING ON CA HWY 101 AT 7:30PM WHEN I SMELLED, THEN SAW SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM THE DRIVER-SIDE DOOR. LUCKILY, I HAD A GALLON OF DRINKING WATER WITHIN REACH. I POURED IT ON THE FIRE WHILE SWERVING TO THE MARGIN SO AS TO AVOID COLLISION. I EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND DISCONNECTED THE WINDOWS-SWITCH PANEL. APPARENTLY, A SHORT-CIRCUIT IN THE WINDOW SWITCHES IGNITED THE SOUND-INSULATION MATERIAL THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRE-PROOF TO BEGIN WITH. THE FIRE MELTED MOST OF THE DRIVER-SIDE PLASTIC DOOR COVER AND PARTIALLY FRIED THE SWITCHES AND ASSOCIATED WIRING. I FOUND THE ARTICLE 'BURNING TOYOTA CAMRY/RAV4 WINDOW SWITCHES PROMPT NHTSA INVESTIGATION' AND MANY OTHERS THAT EXPLAINED EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO MY TOYOTA DEALER WHO INSPECTED THE CAR. I ASKED THE DEALER TO REPAIR THE CAR AT NO COST TO ME BECAUSE, OBVIOUSLY, THE FIRE RESULTED FROM AN INHERENT DEFECT. WITH THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON IT WAS DIFFICULT TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AS NO ONE SEEMED TO RECOGNIZE THE MEANING OF HAZARD LIGHTS.I LET THE CAR REST AND WHEN I STARTED IT EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE AND I DROVE TO REVERE WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I PARKED THE CAR IN THE NORTHGATE SHOPPING MALL AND WHEN I RETURNED A FEW HOURS LATER THE AUTO WAS TOTALLY DEAD AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO WINTHROP. THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE DEAD BATTERY THAT THEY REPLACED AT A COST OF $129.00. THEY TOLD US TO DRIVE LOCALLY FOR A WHILE. SO FAR THE PROBLEM HAS NOT RECURRED. WHAT STARTED OUT A $20,000.00 PURCHASE FOR SAFETY AND RELIABILITY HAS BECOME SOMETHING ELSE. WE WOULD LIKE AN EXPLANATION ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND WE UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. WHEN SOMEONE SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THE AIRBAG SENSOR DOES NOT CORRECTLY JUDGE WHO IS SITTING THERE. THIS IS A COME-AND-GO PROBLEM. SOMETIMES THE ERROR LIGHTS COME ON WHEN THEY SHOULDN'T:THE "BUCKLE SEATBELT" LIGHT FLASHES EVEN WHEN THE SEAT BELT IS BUCKLED. THE "AIRBAG OFF" LIGHT ALSO FLASHES (THE LIGHTS COME ON TOGETHER), EVEN THOUGH THE PERSON IN THE SEAT IS A NORMAL-SIZED ADULT. THE (NON-DEALER) MECHANIC ALSO TOLD US IT WAS SOMETIMES SENSING A LARGER PERSON THAN WAS THERE, SO IT COULD TURN THE AIRBAG ON WHEN IT SHOULDN'T. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE ENGINE WOULD START BUT RUNNING IN ABNORMAL SOUND WITH CONSTANT BIG VIBRATIONS. LOOKING UP ONLINE TO SEE IF THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE 2009 COROLLA, I AM SURPRISED THIS IS WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM AND THAT TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT IT AND EVEN ISSUED THE REPAIR THE BULLETIN. ACCORDING TO THE BULLETIN, THIS NOISE WAS CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY, WHICH AFFECT 2009-2010 COROLLA AND MATRIX. I WAS GOING TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPOT IN THE WORK PARKING GARAGE. AS I MOVED MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL TO THE BRAKE, MY FOOT KNOCKED THE FLOOR MAT CAUSING IT TO JAM UNDER THE GAS PEDAL. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO ACCELERATE INTO A CONCRETE POLE DESPITE BOTH OF MY FEET BEING ON THE BRAKE. I HAD THE RECALL FIX DONE TO MY CAR TO INSERT THE PLASTIC PIECES TO HOLD THE MAT IN PLACE PROPERLY AND WAS ASSURED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS WOULD NEVER BE A PROBLEM; HOWEVER, THEY WERE SMALL PIECES OF PLASTIC AND THE MAT WAS COMPLETELY UNATTACHED FROM BOTH OF THEM. THE CAR CONTINUED TO ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE AFTER IT WAS STUCK ON THE BARRIER UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO PULL THE FLOOR MAT OUT FROM UNDER THE ACCELERATOR. THE PIECES WERE ONLY INSERTED INTO THE CARPET AND NOT THE FLOOR BOARDS, AND THE RESPONDING OFFICER SAID THEY PULLED OUT REALLY EASILY. HE WAS ALSO CONCERNED THAT THE AIRBAG IN THE CAR DIDN'T DEPLOY IN THIS SITUATION DUE TO THE ACCELERATION AND AMOUNT OF FRONT END DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND SUGGESTED SOMETHING MIGHT ALSO BE WRONG WITH IT. *JS
I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A CERTIFIED USED 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH ONLY 25,000 MILES ON IT. I'VE NOTICED THAT STEERING THIS VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, CAN BE A CHALLENGE. ON FEBRUARY 24, 2012, I CALLED TOYOTA AND REPORTED MY INCIDENT. THEY PROVIDED ME WITH THE CASE NUMBER 1202242199. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, THEY HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS ISSUE IN THE PAST, BUT TO ME IT IS UNREASONABLE THAT THE THROTTLE BODY SHOULD FAIL SO SOON. I HAVE HAD THIS COROLLA FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS, AVERAGE ABOUT 700 MILES PER WEEK - DRIVE IT DAILY. I HAVE HAD NO SIGNIFICANT ISSUES WITH IT UNTIL THE PAST MONTH OR SO IN WHICH I HAVE EXPERIENCED TWO "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" EVENTS. IN BOTH CASES I WAS TRAVELING AT A VERY LOW SPEED, ABOUT 10 MPH OR SO IN PARKING LOTS. WHILE COASTING / BRAKING WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, SUDDENLY IT WAS AS IF THE BRAKE PEDAL TURNED INTO AN ACCELERATOR PEDAL! I FELT ALL OF THE BACK-PRESSURE THE BRAKE PEDAL NORMALLY HAS LEAVE AND IT WENT ALMOST COMPLETELY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. AT THE VERY SAME INSTANT THE ENGINE REVVED AND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AND THE CAR "LEAPED" FORWARD. IN BOTH CASES THIS LASTED ONLY A FEW SECONDS THEN THINGS WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THERE WERE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE PANEL WARNING OF ANYTHING WRONG. IN BOTH CASES MY FOOT WAS CLEARLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND NOWHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I VISUALLY INSPECTED THE FLOOR MAT AND THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO INTERFERENCE BETWEEN IT AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS CAR HAS ALREADY HAD ALL OF TOYOTA'S "RECALL" REMEDIES APPLIED TO IT AND COULD BE EASILY ASCERTAINED BY EXAMINING THE MAINTENANCE RECORDS AT BUTLER TOYOTA OF MACON, GEORGIA. I WOULD LIKE IT IF SOMEONE COULD EXAMINE THE CAR'S COMPUTER (NOT THE TOYOTA PEOPLE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS)TO SEE IF THESE EVENTS WERE RECORDED OR NOT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE WIRE THAT CONTROLLED THE WINDOW SWITCH SHORTED, CAUSING THE PASSENGER WINDOW MOTOR TO BURN. AS A RESULT, BOTH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
MY CAR RECENTLY GOT RECALL REPAIR.AFTER THE REPAIR DONE, MY CAR BECAME TAKE A LOT GAS ON DRIVING.THEN I TOOK BACK TO DEALER , DEALER JUST SAID WAS FUEL SYSTEM NEED CLEAN. I THINK THAT IS BIG ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC AND LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE DEALER MODIFIED THE ACCELERATOR, REPLACED THE ROTORS AND THE CABLES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 124,000.
CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO SEVERAL ISSUES WITH VEHICLE *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE HE HAD TO RETURN TO THE DEALER FOUR TIMES FOR A REPAIR ON THE LEFT SIDE B PILLAR. ALSO, THE PASSENGER SIDE FENDER WAS LOOSE, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOPPED WORKING THREE TIMES WHILE IT WAS RAINING AND A PLUG WIRE WAS BAD, DUE TO A BAD CONTACT.
THE ACCIDENT WITH MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA I BELIEVE IS DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE HAS MANY FEATURE THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO REACT IN SITUATIONS OF MINOR ICE AND/OR SLIDING. THE SLIDING LIGHT, OR "VSC/TRAC INDICATOR" (PG. 158 OF OWNER'S MANUAL), COMES ON EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE SLIDES. EVEN WHEN THE CAR SLIDES SO SLIGHTLY THAT YOU CANNOT FEEL IT, THAT LIGHT WOULD COME ON TO WARN THE DRIVER OF THE POTENTIAL HAZARD, ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL "IF THE VEHICLE IS IN DANGER OF SLIPPING OR THE FRONT WHEELS SPIN, THE INDICATOR FLASHES TO INDICATE THAT THE VSC/TRAC HAVE BEEN ENGAGED. A BUZZER (INTERMITTENT) SOUNDS TO INDICATE THAT VSC IS OPERATING." THE CAR WAS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES. AS I WAS TRYING TO SLOW DOWN, I COULD INSTANTLY TELL MY BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONDING. I HIT THEM HARDER, STILL NO RESPONSE. I HAD BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES PUSHING DOWN WITH ALL MY FORCE & STILL FELT AND HEARD NOTHING FROM THE CAR. USUALLY IN SUCH CASE, EVEN IF THE VEHICLE IS SLIPPING, THE DRIVER SHOULD HEAR A TRIPPING NOISE, THAT THE ANTILOCK BREAKS ARE RESPONDING OR AT LEAST ATTEMPTING TO. BUT NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. THE SLIDING LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON, THE CAR DID NOT REACT TO ME HITTING THE BRAKES OR EVEN SHOW ANY SIGNS OF STRUGGLING TO, & THE ANTILOCK BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. ALSO, I JUST HAD 4 NEW MICHELIN HYDROEDGE TIRES INSTALLED JUST A FEW WEEKS PRIOR, (RANKED #1 BY CONSUMER REPORT), MAKING ME BELIEVE THAT THE BRAKES WERE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE. LASTLY, THE CAR HAS BEEN WELL-MAINTAINED SINCE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED FROM THE DEALER, & ALL MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DONE ONLY AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, INCLUDING A 27 POINT INSPECTION WITH EVERY OIL CHANGE, & ALL RECORDS OF SUCH ARE AVAILABLE. I UNDERSTAND OF COURSE THAT ICE TRUMPS ALL, INCLUDING VEHICLE SAFETY MEASURES, BUT I STILL BELIEVE STRONGLY THAT THE CAR DID NOT REACT AS IT SHOULD HAVE ON A MECHANICAL AND TECHNICAL LEVEL WHATSOEVER. *TR
2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. CONSUMER STATES ISSUES WITH SCREECHING NOISE *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE NOISE WOULD OCCUR, WHEN SHE STARTED THE VEHICLE, FOLLOWED BY THE BATTERY LIGHT ILLUMINATING. THE BATTERY LIGHT WOULD EVENTUALLY GO OFF AND THEN THE VEHICLE WOULD MAKE THE SCREECHING NOISE AGAIN. THE PROBLEM STARTED INTERMITTENTLY IN OCTOBER AND ONE DAY IT COMPLETELY DRAINED THE BATTERY. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND THE ISSUE CONTINUED, BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. WHEN THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, THEY INFORMED HER THE PROBLEM WAS THE DRIVE BELT, WHICH WAS REPLACED. THE NOISE CONTINUED AND A HOT BURNING SMELL APPEARED AFTER THE SCREECHING NOISE. THE CONSUMER WENT TO GET A SECOND OPINION AND WAS INFORMED THE PROBLEM WAS THE CLUTCH PULLEY IN WHICH A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED, BUT NOT FOR HER MODEL. THE CONSUMER THEN WENT BACK TO THE DEALER WITH THE NEW INFORMATION AND WAS TOLD SHE NEEDED A NEW ALTERNATOR. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE IDLING IN A STRANGE MANNER. THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY VIBRATED AND IDLED VERY LOW WHEN STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. *JB
