NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Toyota Corolla. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I turned my car on and every light on the dashboard is practically on. It’s saying my (EPS) has failed and now it’s become hard to steer the vehicle. And none of my electrics as far as cruise control work and my speedometer isn’t working nor is it presenting me digital numbers on my dash.
The contact owned a 2012 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while parking in a post office parking lot and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle experienced sudden and unintended acceleration, crashed into a tree, and shut off. There was no warning light illuminated before or after the crash. There was no property damage. The air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained a hematoma and pain in the right arm. The contact's friend transported the contact to Urgent Care, where the contact received medical assistance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it was totaled by the insurance company. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The contact stated that she had reported a similar incident to NHTSA via mail in 2012. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.

air bag needed to be replaced after I replaced it before on a previous recall. NEED ANOTHER RECALL
The airbag (driver's side) was replaced in 2019 per a recall at a dealership in Columbia, MO. My wife and I have since moved to [XXX] . We took the car to a local mechanic (closer to our house) for basic work, such as an oil change/tire rotation. During the vehicle inspect, they said the airbag failed test (image attached). We got the work done (cost about $1,000). The dealership was not pleasant to work with and said the mechanic was "not Toyota certified" and "she should have drove to a Toyota dealership". The initial 2019 airbag replacement was under a 12-month warranty. This is the basic warranty for all repairs, which I understand. However, airbags are supposed to last longer than 4 years. The car was not in an accident. This is a either a faulty manufacturer/design. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Context: My wife replaced the driver’s side airbag per the 2019 Toyota Corolla recall at a Columbia, MO dealership. We’ve since moved to North Carolina. The airbag light and maintenance light came on, and we took it to the mechanic (Christian Brothers Automotive) close to our new home. They ran a diagnostics report on 9/14/2023 to determine the airbag on the driver’s side needed to be replaced. I have documentation of this report with the error code. I got the work done at the mechanic because my wife did not feel comfortable knowingly driving with a faulty vehicle. I tried contacting corporate customer service as well as the dealership that did the original replacement in 2019. I was told that all repairs only have a 12-month warranty. While I understand this is the policy, I do not agree that an airbag replacement should be charged out of pocket after 4 years of replacement. Studies have shown that airbags should last the lifetime of the vehicle. Either the original 2019 replacement was not correctly executed, or the vehicle manufacturer needs to issue another recall. I also tried contacting the “goodwill” department of Toyota Corporate and was unsuccessful in getting a reimbursement. I am requesting a full reimbursement of the airbag replacement cost and labor for a grand sum of $1,166.77.

It does not make sense to me that an airbag should last 4 years, and we should have to pay $1,200. In addition to this, the service manager at the Columbia, MO (Joe Machen’s) Toyota was extremely unprofessional. He said that my wife should have drove (with an inoperable airbag) to a Toyota dealership, which came across as unethical in my opinion. I would like to officially request a reimbursement of “good will” from Toyota. I have a work order and a paid receipt to provide any evidence that is required. If this message does not pertain to your role within Toyota, please pass this message along to the appropriate department/individual. I am happy to answer any questions and can be contacted at [XXX] . I sincerely appreciate your attention to this matter. Faulty airbag - needed to get it replaced. Forced to pay for whole thing.
Airbag needed to be replaced....again. This vehicle has had many recalls before, but now I am forced to pay for an additional replacement. Airbags are supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. Toyota not covering this $1000 expense is ridiculous and unsafe.

On March 30, 2023, at approximately 7:10 pm, my son was involved in an auto accident with his 2012 Toyota Corolla and his airbags did not deploy. His vehicle was impacted on the driver’s side fender and bumper. He was traveling, approximately 50 mph in the center lane. The other vehicle that was involved had their airbags deploy. My son did experience chest, shoulder and neck pain from the impact. He was taken to Baylor-Scott and White Hospital for his injuries. The vehicle was inoperable and towed to the Lewisville impound for storage. The Flower Mound Police Department responded to the accident and an accident report was completed. On March 05, 2020, I received a notice for the Airbag Safety Recall for VIN 5YFBU4EE1CP051025. On April 03, 2020, I received a payment of $62.25 for the Takata Airbag Product Liability Litigation, No. 1:15md-02599-FAM. On May 19, 2020, the Toyota Corolla was serviced at Lone Star Toyota pursuant to the safety recall. An Airbag Harness Kit was installed.
There was a paint recall for my car that expired in 2022. My car’s paint didn’t start peeling until 2023 and I wasn’t informed of the recall. I found out through a Reddit post. The paint peeling is not my fault and I should not have to pay for it.
Dealer have no time to fix it
My Corolla flipped over upside down going 30 miles an hour. I collided with another vehicle that was stopped in the opposing lane of travel to turn left. We both barely were over center the line at impact that somehow caused my Corolla to roll upside down. Some how this did not deploy the safety airbags either. The airbags are not my complaint; but rather that I managed to flip upside down going 30 mph from a driver side collision. I’m writing in an attempt to understand why it wasn’t just an impact, but actually flipped the vehicle over. Also, why the safety airbags, which were recalled and repaired, did not engage upon impact. I just replaced the transmission 3 weeks prior to this bizarre accident, that may have totaled my vehicle. It’s still sitting in my garage because new investments had just been made to keep it in good shape for another year (transmission, tires, headlights, plate renewal, etc). I was planning to purchase a new Toyota suv the following spring or shortly after. Unfortunately this collision has derailed all future ambitions regarding my mode of transportation and forced me to purchase an extremely old Toyota Avalon in order for me to function in my daily life as a single parent. I am very fortunate to have escaped any serious injuries considering I was upside down, hanging from my seatbelt, and even more grateful that I had not gotten my 9 year old daughter yet. I was in route to pick her up around 4pm when it happened. I would love some insight or science as to why or how that could have happened. *side complaint- the grill of my Corolla has fallen off twice unnoticeably (and I purchased and replaced with a new one both times). Why are either the fasteners not stronger or why isn’t the bottom of the vehicle itself not stronger. It’s the flimsiest plastic which shouldn’t be used on something meant to transport the most precious cargo. I’ve noticed it is very common for many Corollas to be missing the grill piece since it’s become a “thing”.
While driving on the highway the sunroof unexpectedly exploded
Paint it's peeling of on randomly spots that it should not have peeling I called toyota recall center and there is nothing they can do since there are no recalls for this models on paint

MY CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH A 2ZR-FE ENGINE AND IT IS KNOWN ISSUE FOR ALL THOSE ENGINES AS IT EXHIBIT A MIL "ON" WITH DTC P219A (BANK 1AIR-FUEL RATIO IMBALANCE) PRESENT. AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD INTERMITTENTLY COME ON EITHER WHILE IN MOTION OR STOPPED IN GEAR USUALLY DRIVING
CORROSION TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER HOSE OCCURRED IN THE METAL PIPE PORTION OF THE COOLER LINE, SPECIFICALLY THE TOP LINE, (NOT SURE IF THAT'S 'IN' OR 'OUT') CAUSING A LEAK IN ATF. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT CORROSION TO BOTH BOLTS THAT HOLD THIS LINE IN PLACE AND CAUSED THE BOLTS TO SNAP WHEN TRYING TO REPLACE THIS LINE.
THE HORN STOPPED WORKING. TOYOTA VERIFIED IT IS THE ELECTRICAL BEHIND THE DASHBOARD, WHICH WILL COST $475.00 TO REPAIR. I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 89 WHEN THE CAR I WAS PASSING STARTED VEERING INTO MY LANE. I WENT TO USE MY HORN AND IT DID NOT WORK! VERY SCARY SITUATION.
MY AIRBAG WAS RECALLED I GOT IT FIXED AND NOW THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON. I TOOK IT BACK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WORK THEY DID. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR 3 YEARS WITH NO LIGHTS ON AND NOW, AFTER I GET THE RECALL FIXED, A LIGHT COMES ON AND ITS NOT RELATED?
I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR A RECALL REPAIR AND IT WAS RETURNED DAMAGED WITH A PIECE HANGING OUT. THE DEALER ADMITTED THAT THEY KNEW THERE WAS DAMAGE AND OPTED NOT TO TELL ME. I CALLED CORPORATE TOYOTA AND TOLD THEM I WAS CONCERNED THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT COMPLETED PROPERLY AND WAS ADVISED I WOULD NEED TO PAY TO HAVE IT INSPECTED BY ANOTHER DEALER AND HAVE THE RECALL PROPERLY REPAIRED, OR I CAN TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER THAT DID NOT INITIALLY PERFORM THE REPAIR CORRECTLY. I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THAT THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE SINCE THE VISIBLE COMPONENTS WERE NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY. THE DEALER I WENT TO HAS PROVEN INCAPABLE OF PROPERLY PERFORMING THIS REPAIR. IN SUMMARY, THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT PROPERLY PERFORMED AND CORPORATE TOYOTA ADVISED THAT I WOULD NEED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR IF I TAKE IT TO A REPUTABLE DEALER. *TR

KINDLY, MY CAR IS TOYOTA COROLLA 2012, I PURCHASED IT FROM SAUDI ARABIA, AND THEN I EXPORTED IT TO MY MOTHER COUNTRY ( EGYPT ). IT IS MANUFACTURED TO ARAB GULF SPECIFICATIONS AND I AM THE FIRST OWNER, I AM WRITING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT MY CAR DASHBOARD. THREE MONTHS AGO, I FOUND THAT THE DASHBOARD BEGAN TO MELT AND BECAME STICKY BY THE HEAT OF THE SUN, IN ADDITION TO; IT CREATES AN UNSAFE GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD WHILE DRIVING. AFTER SEARCHING FOR A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT MANY COSTUMERS HAVE FACED THE SAME PROBLEM AND WAS SOLVED BY TOYOTA CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN EGYPT "TOYOTA EGYPT" REFUSED TO REPLACE THE MELTING DASHBOARD WITH A NEW ONE BECAUSE MY CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, BUT REGARDLESS OF MY CAR'S AGE, IS THE DASHBOARD SUPPOSED TO MELT ! THEREFORE, I WANT TO KNOW YOUR RESPONSE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. KNOWING THAT, I DO NOT EVER PUT ANY MATERIALS ON THE DASHBOARD. PLEASE FIND THE ATTACHED PHOTOS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND UNDERSTANDING
THE CAR WAS STATIONARY. I WENT TO BUCKLE THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEATBELT BEFORE GOING GROCERY SHOPPING AND SPRINGS CAME FLYING OUT OF THE BUCKLING MECHANISM. THE SEATBELT NO LONGER WORKS. *TR
THERE IS A DEFECT ON THE INTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR. I ATTACHED A PHOTO, NOTICE THE BLACK MARKS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MIRROR...THESE WILL GET LARGER OVER TIME AND AFFECT VISIBILITY. THIS ALREADY HAPPENED WITH THE ORIGINAL INTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR, WHICH WAS REPLACED AT BREDEMANN TOYOTA IN PARK RIDGE, IL. THIS MIRROR IS NEVER TOUCHED, SO THIS IS VERY ODD. *TR

HORN ONLY WORKS WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT AND WON'T WORK WHEN THE WHEEL IS STRAIGHT. NO MATTER IF THE CAR IS MOVING OR NOT THE PROBLEM IS FIXED BY REPLACING THE CLOCK SPRING, A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD THIS ISSUE IN COROLLA (2010 -2012)
POWER CONTROL VALVE GETS STUCK CLOSED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACK LIGHT COMES ON THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WHEN I GOT THE CALL NEW IT HAS 30 TIMES T CANT USE MY CRUZ CONTROL AFTER 50 MILES IT IS RESET ITSELF ALL GOES BACK TO NORMAL OR I PUT A SCAN TOOL ON AND RESET IT
TAKATA RECALL I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL. I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIR BAG HIT MY LEFT ARM WHEN IT DEPLOYED. I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL AFTER MY INSURANCE COMPANY COMPLETED AN EVUALATION ON MY TOYOTA CAROLLA. WITH IT NOT BEING FIXED IT MAY HAVE DECREASED THE VALUE OF MY CAR.
WAS IN A FRONT END COLLISION AND AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I T-BONED ANOTHER VEHICLE.
AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON DASHBOARD AS WELL AS PASSENGER SEAT BELT LIGHT CONTINUOUSLY BEEPING TO BUCKLE SEAT BELT. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED MULTIPLE PARTS AND ISSUE CAME BACK AFTER 4 MONTHS. DEALER NOW IS CLAIMING THAT AIR BAG INFLATOR IS THE ISSUE. RECALLED PARTS WERE REPLACED PREVIOUSLY. DEALER DOES NOT SEEM TO BE 100% CERTAIN WHAT THE ISSUE IS AND IS REPLACING PARTS AT CUSTOMER'S EXPENSE.

I HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE IS A VERY STRONG WAVE EFFECT ON THE FRONT AND REAR WINDSHIELD THAT COVERS THE LENGTH OF THE GLASS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND A SERIES OF WAVES OF VARIABLE WIDTH THAT COVER THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD. IT SEEMS AS IF THE THICKNESS OF THE GLASS VARIES. THE OBJECTS CHANGE SHAPE WHILE DRIVING. IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO OBSERVE THE APPROACHING TRAFFIC AND DISTANCES. WHEN YOU TRY TO TURN IT IS VERY DIFFICULT. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO CONCENTRATE ON THE ROAD DUE TO THE DISTORTION PRESENT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE EFFECT IS SIMILAR TO LOOKING THROUGH GLASSES THAT HAVE THE WRONG RECIPE, OR WEARING TOO STRONG READING GLASSES. I AM WORRIED ABOUT HAVING AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THIS SITUATION. DRIVING THE CAR CAUSES MIGRAINES AND HEADACHES.
IGNITION KEY GETS EXTREMELY HOT DURING NORMAL OPERATION IN NORMAL CONDITIONS AND NORMAL EXTERNAL TEMPERATURES. THE KEY GETS TOO HOT TO REMOVE FROM THE IGNITION AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF DRIVING BETWEEN VA AND FL OR FL AND VA. ISSUE HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN VA AND MD/DC OR WITHIN VA N TO S. KEY GETS SO HOT THE ONLY WAY TO REMOVE FROM THE IGNITION IS WITH THE KEY RING. ISSUE HAPPENS ON BOTH KEYS. ISSUE HAPPENS ALL YEAR ROUND AND WORSE IN SUMMER MONTHS.
BRAKES ON VEHECLE STARTED GETTING VERY LOW ON PEDAL AND SLOW TO STOP . MECHANIC WORKED ON IT REPLACED MODULATOR AND OVER $500. LATER BRAKES STILL NOT WORKING . ANOTHER MECHANIC (ANOTHER ($500) STILL WORKING ON VEHECLE WITHOUT LUCK AS PART THAT'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROBLEM IS ATTACHED TO THE COMPUTER AND DEALERSHIPS WILL SELL WHOLE COMPUTER AT APROXIMA $4000.00 . HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR USED PART FOR PAST 6 MONTHS (UNABLE TO USE WE) AND EVERY SHOP STATED THAT PART IS PROMPTLY REMOVED FROM CRASHED VEHICLES AS IS A RECURRENT PEOPLE LOOKING FOR IT. ALSO WAS NOTIFIED THAT TOYOTA COROLLA 2012 BRAKE SYSTEM WAS CHANGED ONLY FOR THAT YEAR AND AGAIN YEAR AFTER SAME SYSTEM TILL NOW ... AT EVERY REPAIR SHOP I'M TOLD: ' THAT IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THAT CAR'...
I'M HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THERE ARE MULTIPLE ERROR CODES AND THE DEALERSHIP CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. THEY THINK IT'S THE AIRBAG MODULE. TOYOTA HAS HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE AIRBAG SYSTEM NOT JUST THE TAKATA. BUT THIS ISSUE IT DISABLES ALL THE AIRBAGS AND BEEPS TO BUCKLE YOUR SEATBELT. THERE SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE SO I'D LIKE YOU TO LOOK INTO IT.
TALARA RECALL I CALL TO MAKE AND APPOINTMENT ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND THEY TELL ME TO CALL ME BACK WITH THE DAY TO BRING THE CAR TO TOYOTA I'M STILL WAITING ON A CALL THEY NEVER MAKE AND APPOINTMENT AND NEVER CALL ME PLEASE I NEED TO REPAIR MY CAR
