NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Toyota Corolla. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I have only had the car for a year and a half, and I have already had to replace the battery which was less than 2 years old, all 4 tires (2 at 40000 miles and 2 at 48000), and now the engine wiring harness somehow got severed and has to be replaced which is almost $6k repair!
I was going to work on 12/15/2022. There was a stop sign and I needed to take a right turn in order to join the freeway-10 east highway to head on to work. it was about 6: 40 am approximate time. There were too many cars ahead of me at the stop sign. My brakes failed to hold on while I waited for my turn. There were at least 3-4 cars ahead of me. Therefore I did not want to hurt anyone or any other car ahead of me. Therefore I veered off to my right-hand side where there was some space and tried to stop the car but it did not do so. Therefore, My car had to hit the high-way pole to come to a stop. The airbags deployed and hit me more to my right side. The car got totaled as per California casualty insurance information. I am glad to be alive. I went later to the hospital as there were no direct visible injuries.
1. First problem I had with my 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE: SAFETY RECALL 20TA07 (Backup LampsMay Become Inoperative) - 10.29.2020 2. Second problem was with the software draining the battery way too rapidly, which made me unable to start my car. I had to have a tow truck come by and he was able to recharge the battery (he knew to do that with my car instead of towing it away, because he was seeing this type of issue with this type of car a lot). I took it to my local toyota dealership and had them inspect it. They told me that they need to update the software of the vehicle and that I should not be having this problem again after. *EL1934 FIRMWARE UPDATE (5.21.2021)* 3. Third problem I had was with the temperature gauge. The needle pointer in the dash did not go up and stay in the middle between C & H. It stayed closer to C (cold). It took longer than it should have to heat up the interior of the car when I turn the heat on in the morning. I took it to my local toyota dealership and after they inspected this issue, they told me that they needed to replace the thermostat unit. *MA001 THERMOSTAT ASSEMBLY* (3.19.22) 4. Fourth problem is with the transmission. I felt jerking motions from the car when accelerating and when braking-coming to a stop. **26312 CAR JERKING UPON ACCELERATION /FOUND TRNSMISSION CODE /NEED NEW TRANS ASSY UPON INSPECTION AND HEATLH CHFCK FOUND CODE P07457F AND PO7757F SOLENOID A B BOTH STUCK OFF /REST MEMORY /NO CHANGED /FOUND NEED NEW TRANS MISSION ASSY /REMOVE AND REPLACE TRANMISSION ASSY AND PERFORM RESET AND INITIALIZATION/PERFORM HYDRULIC AND ELECTRICAL TEST /NO PROBLEM FOUND /PROBLEM AT THE TRANSMISSION ITSELF CAR JECKING UPON ACCELERATION** Transmission, Automatic - Replace* (12.10.2022) I found out online that the transmission problem was known for 2018-2020 corolla hatchbacks, but Toyota did not replace it immediately. There should be a general recall for the transmissions for these vehicles ASAP!
While operating our 2020 Toyota Corolla hybrid at a slow speed in a parking lot, we began to apply the brakes as we pulled into a parking stall. As the brakes were applied , the vehicle suddenly lunged forward with abrupt force. Both tires left acceleration marks on the painted concrete curb and the vehicle struck a large concrete pillar with such force that the pillar was partially dislodged from the ground. The vehicle was brought to a Toyota dealership and the sales management was notified of the incident. We also filed complaint with the Toyota Corporation. We were contacted by a Toyota Corporation representative and were told that they would conduct the vehicle inspection. Several weeks later we received a letter from the Toyota Corporation legal department which informed us of their findings. The letter conveyed that no defect was discovered and the incident had not been captured in the vehicle's computer. We informed the Toyota dealership of the results. The only assistance offered was their willingness to sell the vehicle at auction, which we adamantly declined. At this time we are making arrangements to have the vehicle towed to a recycling lot for destruction.
Front passenger side brake caliper was rusted and seized. At the time of this issue the car is two years old and had 40k miles. The car has lived its entire life in western North Carolina with me being its only owner. It has never been driven in salty conditions other than twice to the beach. The dealership refused to fix this safety issue under the platinum warranty I purchased because it is "Enviromental". This is a major safety concern. I have a 1997 suburban which gets drove in salty conditions every winter and has never one had an issue with its calipers or any operational part rusting.
Battery and alternator died causing power steering to fail and wheels to lock up. Should not happen on a car this new, brought to dealer and charged me $740 to fix it.
DOORS FILL UP WITH RAIN WATER AND WATER IS SLOSHING AROUND INSIDE DOOR FRAME. NEED DOORS REPLACED DUE TO ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS BEING DAMAGED BY MOISTURE CORROSION.
While driving I heard water sound in my car like a wave and checked the car and finally realized that passenger side door in front is holding water . When moving the door back and forth you can hear it. I have heard it before and the noise stop it’s been raining and The wave back again.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle emitted an abnormal slushing sound. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that upon parking and inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the abnormal sound was coming from the front driver's side door. The contact then moved each door of the vehicle from side to side and noticed that the failure occurred on the front passenger's side door and the front and rear driver's side doors. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions and the water was drained from the doors; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they would cover the repair of the vehicle. The contact stated that it had been two months and the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that he was concerned for his safety as he was a disabled veteran. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
Car hydroplaned and spun out. It collided with a cement barrier on the front, back, and drivers side. Car was deemed a total loss. No airbags deployed at any point. Drivers safety put at risk as she hit her head on the driver's side door. Car displayed the message "ABS system malfunctioned" once Car came to stand still. Also, daughters car seat detached from the seat belt lock, sending her car seat sideways. Locks did not keep her secure.
Code P2688115 engine maintenance required sign turned on at around 41000 miles. Other people having similar problems with coolant bypass valve. Suspect that coolant bypass valve safety standards might be at fault.
The latch around the front passenger tire was off when I bought the car and findley Toyota would not fix it and stated every time I wen in that there was a rattle on the front passsenger tire. They knew there was a problem and they wouldn't fix it and told me that it wouddl cast me $2,500
My vehicle has 20k miles on it and during acceleration, the CVT would not upshift was bouncing off the rev limiter. I had no controls over the Paddle Shifts or Electronic manual shifter controls. Tried to accelerate again, and bounced off the rev limiter again. Shortly after the CEL came on and the vehicle went into LIMP mode causing me to lose control of accelerator pedal, and the car drastically decelerated on its own until about 35mph Yes. Transmission is currently at shop awaiting for replacement unit This issue happened during a driver education event, and therefore was not on public roads with other pedestrians. Had this happened on a highway during merging or passing on a highway, this could have caused an accident by not having control of car's deceleration, and no warning brake lights to drivers behind me could have caused other drivers to rear end me Yes. The issue was reviewed by 2 dealers and both reported the CVT was faulty and needed replacement Yes. CEL came on, and was displaying codes P2757 and P2820. Dealer pulled the following codes: P275600- Torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid control circuit performance/stuck off P281F00- Pressure control solenoid j performance/stuck off (2 trip detected) P281F71- Pressure control solenoid j performance/stuck off actuator stuck
2020 Toyota Corolla EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) Issue. The message "EPB Shift Interlock Function Activated" is being shown since last few months. This message never appeared in the past 2.5 yrs since I purchased the car, started showing up up only now. I took it to the dealership and they asked to keep brakes pressed while starting the car. I now keep my brakes pressed and start the car, and still I keep getting this error message. I have documented this issue and is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTXosvPffMo Please help Toyota help address this issue. Not sure something is not working as expected in the car or if something is started to fail in the car with EPB and so it's showing up the message. The message looks like information message and looks like harmless message, but why its showing up now, i.e after 2.5 yrs of use and never before. So, that's needs to be investigated, if there is any long term impact.
I’ve owned my 2020 Toyota Corolla since April of 2019. Around June of 2022 I noticed a sloshing/ swooshing sound. I didn’t think much of it, but it kept doing/ hearing it. Finally I got tired of hearing the noise, and started to look for where the noise was coming from. I then realized there was water in my rear doors. I didn’t know what to do since once I realized what was happening or how it was happening, my warranty period had just passed, since at this point I have owned the vehicle for over 3 years. I kept researching and found the article attached in pdf. I was able to complete the work myself. At this point I am now worried the interior will have rust, since the water would sit there for days/ weeks after it rains. I think this resolves the issue of getting the water to exit the doors, but I don’t believe it resolves how the water is entering the vehicle. I truly believe this car will rust out from the inside, and will be left paying for the bad manufacturing of Toyota, with regards to this vehicle, and possibly a dangerous vehicle issue, as the rust will compromise the integrity of the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the steering momentarily malfunctioned causing the vehicle to drift into the opposite lane. The contact indicated that while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle started drifting into the left lane and would not respond when the steering wheel was turned to the right. The contact immediately depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that moments later the vehicle drove normally. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who identified steering failure codes but indicated that the failure was due to a low-powered battery. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 30,000.

When using cruise control, all warning lights come on while driving - check engine, parking, abs, everything. It stays like this for about a week and then stops until the next time you use cruise control. I have taken to the dealer and they acted like it wasn’t a problem and turned off the lights but it still keeps happening.
The vehicle stalled after the car had been turned on for 2 minutes; I do not believe there were any warning signals beforehand. I had been stopped at a light, and then almost immediately when I was able to proceed, it stalled while I was turning right. I WAS able to start it immediately, after turning it off completely. This is the second time this vehicle stalled, the first being in August 2020 after only 600 miles (it was new when purchased in March 2020), and at somewhat faster speed (10 mph). Both times, it spent several days at the Toyota dealer where it was purchased--this last time, eight days--and the mechanics were never able to duplicate the problem. I had hoped that they would inspect the fuel pump, knowing that millions of Corollas from 2019 and 2020 had been recalled for this issue, but I was told that it would be a very lengthy job and that there were no signs to indicate fuel-pump problems. In other words, Toyota was not authorizing that inspection. Thus, I am having to take back the vehicle with the mystery unsolved, and with the risk of another stall happening again in future. I am feeling lucky that I was not rear-ended, since the traffic was pretty heavy this last time.
There was a recall for vehicle shutting down when driving it was suppose to be taking care of back in October of 2022 and it continued to happen once in a while now it is happening more often and it is dangerous in the middle of traffic the engine just shut off with no warning now they are saying nothing is wrong and it out of warranty it is dangerous to drive there is going to be a accident
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the contact stopped and the seat belt failed to restrain as designed, causing the contact to lunge forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that no failure was found. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 5,000. The VIN was not available.
Since March of 2022 I have noticed a sloshing sound from the driver's side door and both rear doors. The sound continues, especially when I break and when I open the doors. The vehicle has not been in any accident at all. I made an appointment specifically to get that looked at on April 11th, however, the Toyota dealership in Woodbridge, VA completely ignored my request and instead did an oil change, which was not needed, as one had already been done the month before. When I complained they said it would cost $150 to get a diagnosis test done first. From looking at T-SB-0121-20, that is the same issue I am experiencing.
UNKNOWN While driving my car will cut off and a power steering message will appear, but when its serviced at the dealership they show no issue with the power steering. It cuts off suddenly without notice. One time i was at a light in traffic, another time i was waiting on a car to pass to pull out onto a busy highway
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact's wife stated while driving approximately 65 mph when the rear passenger side tire exploded without warning which resulted in the contact losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a retaining barrier. The contacts wife sustained chest bruises but did not seek medical treatment. The vehicle was towed to the parking lot and a police report was taken. The contact stated tmps warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer to be inspected. The manufacturer was informed of failure and is awaiting a response. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.
I am not sure what the component is but I am driving and as I accelerate the gas my car will lose power to increase speed. If I am at the stop sign or stop light and I proceed to go the car will stall and not get going once I place my foot on the gas. I have reached out to the dealer by phone and when I have obtained service I am being advised that it's nothing. But I have experienced it on multiple occasions and even had an accident and nothing is being done to resolve the issue. I know that it can't be normal for the vehicle to do that and I am tired of getting the run around in regards to it. I was able to see that there has been a recall but do not see that it is in regard to me vin number. Can you please assist me with this matter. I should not be in the middle of driving or at a stop light and not able to accelerate my vehicle to a regular speed. I would like to have this matter looked into by a different Toyota dealer. Also it happens randomly and when I take to the dealership nothing is ever done and the issue is constantly being ignored. I am being told that due to no check engine light being on that my car is fine and its not. I don't want to lose my life due to the fact that I have purchased a faulty car and have not been made aware of any issues to protect my safety.
The windshield wiper switch assembly (column stalk/switch) malfunctions intermittently, sending unintended signals that activate the wipers despite the stalk being firmly in the OFF position. The component is still installed in the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. Suspected part numbers include 84652-06400 or similar variants. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Sudden, unexpected wiper activation (typically 1-2 wipes, occasionally more) while driving creates a serious distraction and safety hazard. It can startle the driver, cause momentary loss of vehicle control or focus (especially at highway speeds or in traffic), and briefly obstruct vision. This risk is heightened during rain, when wipers are needed but behave erratically, or during acceleration/turns where vibration triggers it—potentially leading to accidents. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, the Toyota dealership has not reproduced or confirmed it during short test drives, as the issue is highly intermittent and occurs mainly after warmup from extended driving (20+ minutes), on hot days or after parking off for ~1 hour in heat/vibration. Similar cases reported by other 2020 Corolla owners on Reddit (r/COROLLA) and Toyota Nation forums were eventually diagnosed and fixed by replacing the wiper switch due to worn internal contacts/PCB from heat/vibration. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle was brought to a Toyota dealership, but no detailed inspection or repair occurred due to lack of replication. No inspections by police, insurance, Toyota corporate (manufacturer), or others have taken place. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps, messages, dashboard indicators, or prior symptoms
The steering makes a thumping noise. The car also veers off to the left or right while driving. I had a front-end alignment performed by the dealer. It still does the same thing. I did take it to the Dealer, twice and they claimed there was no issue. I've never heard a thumping noise in any other car that I've owned. I have not had an accident but there is something going on with the steering of the car. I'm not sure if the steering column was broken or attempted to be stolen. There are scratches around the ignition switch that were there when I bought the car.

While driving my car it turned off and it was hard for me to turn and all my lights was hard to steer and all the lights on the dash board turned on and they was not turning off and I got in. A wreck by me not being able to turn and hit a bush and my car got total
At slow speeds and stop and go driving the car suddenly stalls. The car was taken into a Toyota service center and they were unable to find an error code or replicate the problem. This has happened twice in a week.
We rented a 2020 Toyota Corolla from Hertz at the McCarran Airport Las Vegas NV and almost past out while driving due to Carbon Monoxide poisonings. My wife was sick 3 out of the 4 days while this auto was being driven in our possession. At first our sickness was thought to be motion sickness or maybe from something we ate. It wasn't until we drove this car out of town when we both my wife and I started getting very sick weak dizzy and vomiting. We tried to drive out to the Hover Dam but stop about 10 miles short. After a brief rest we decided to had back to Las Vegas. Just outside of Las Vegas I could hardly breath and had all the same symptoms previously stated. Luckily I was able to get out of traffic and pulled off the high stopping at the first place I was able to pull into. I believe that If I didn't do so I would have passed out and may have caused an accident. Roadside assistance stated this is a common thing in Toyota's. My concern is how many of these cars are rentals and how many people may have been in accidents and the driver blamed? Please google 2020 Toyota Corolla Carbon monoxide poisoning for morning formation. Feel free to call me at [XXX] for more details. My son was driving on the freeway when one tire came off the wheel. He lost control and hit by truck on the passenger side. There's only 8000 miles on the car.
Transmission stuttering at steady speed more pronounced on inclines. Violent skipping or slipping on acceleration
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the driver’s side front seat belt buckle mechanism malfunctioned and failed to lock as designed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. The Vin was not available.
"Engine maintenance required" - Coolant bypass valve is the cause
Newly bought vehicle won't start when key is turned in ignition. Problem is a repeat problem and vehicle was repeatedly towed to dealer (Gosch Toyota). Dealer said there is nothing wrong with the car . Dealer admits he can't reproduce the problem and paperwork I've obtained from them indicates they may not have even tried. Car has major safety issue and is unreliable which is an explanation falling on deaf ears at Gosch. So it remains parked in my driveway. I refuse to put anyone in my family into it because of obvious safety issues. Car is totally unreliable if one can't rely on it to work .
My car was sold with the odometer rolled back (fraud odometer). I bought with 6074 miles and when I went to the Toyota for maintenance they reported me more than 88.000 miles.
VEHICLE IS JERKING AND SHUTTERING WHILE IN MOTION BETWEEN 4-20MPH COLD OR HOT AND A/C ON OR OFF. THIS OCCURS BEFORE BRAKING AND SEEMS TO JERK FORWARD. TENDS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN IN PARKING LOTS. THIS ISSUE IS ACCOMPANIED BY AGGRESSIVE ENGINE SHAKING AND ALL PASSENGERS CAN FEEL THE ROUGH IDLE. THIS ISSUE IS PROGRESSIVE GETTING WORSE WITH TIME OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, SPARK PLUGS WAS THE ASSUMED ISSUE FROM TECHNICIAN. FIRST DIAGNOSIS WAS SPARK KNOCK. REPLACED SPARK PLUGS, DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. SECOND DIAGNOSIS WAS "OFF CENTER STEERING WHEEL CAUSING STABILITY CONTROL TO OVERRIDE DRIVER THROTTLE INPUTS AND LEAD TO JERKY OPERATION" CASE IS ONGOING AND A RESOLUTION HASN'T BEEN PROVIDED OR SOLVED. TOYOTA CORP. IS OPENING AN INVESTIGATION/CASE.
Message on dashboard that says, "Engine Maintenance Required. Visit Dealer." This message came on at around 31,000 miles and I was told it was three different things all different prices at my dealer. So, I looked into it and found out it was the Coolant Bypass Valve, and asked the dealership about it and they said 700 dollars to replace. I did not want to pay that much especially since I saw online others were having the same problem. Message still pops up to this day when I turn on my A/C. Car now has around 205,000 miles on it and is six years old.

The contact leased a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving at 62 mph, another vehicle was driving above 100 mph, crashed into the rear driver side bumper and moved up to the rear driver side door. The vehicle then bounced into the front driver side door ripping off the driver's side view mirror and continued driving. The contact's vehicle slid upon impact and the contact hit his head on the roof of the vehicle then hit the front driver's door window. The contact's right side hip hit the center console. No air bags were deployed. A police report was filed. The contact did not receive medical attention on the scene but later went to the hospital for hip injuries. The vehicle was not towed and the contact was able to drive the vehicle after the collision. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a claim was opened. The manufacturer wanted to inspect the vehicle, however the vehicle rental company had already repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 16,535.

THE WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID SPRAYS OVER THE CAR ONTO CARS/ROAD BEHIND THE CAR. THE WASHER FLUID ALSO SPRAYS INTO THE CAR OF THE SUNROOF IS OPEN. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPORTS THAT IT'S 'OPERATING AS DESIGNED' AND DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS IS CONCERNING BECAUSE IT COULD DISTRACT THE DRIVER BEHIND ME WHEN I TRY TO CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD AND THEY COULD RUN INTO MY VEHICLE, POSSIBLE CAUSING A MULTI-CAR CRASH.
WAS ON A HEAD ON COLLISION THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO OPEN NO BREAKS OR INDICATION THAT THE BREAKS WERE FAILING.ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE SHOP SHORTLY AFTER THE BATTERY EXPLODED SED .NOW THE CARE IS TOTALLY FOR ALL THE FROND END DAMAGE AND THE COST OF THE BATTER WOULD BE TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS.I WAS DRIVING INTERSTATE 15 IN RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA REAR END THE CAR IN FRONT.
I WAS HIT FROM BEHIND BY A SPEEDER IN WHICH CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGES TO MY VEHICLE. NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I WAS ADVISED WHEN PURCHASING THIS CAR THAT TOYOTA CONNECTS DETECTS CRASHES AND THAT THE EMERGENCY SYSTEM WOULD CALL THE CAR. UNFORTUNATELY, NOT ONLY DID THE AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOY BUT THE EMERGENCY SYSTEM DIDN'T NOT CALL THE VEHICLE AS I WAS ADVISED. MY VEHICLE HAS DEFECTS AND THE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW THINKING IT COULD KEEP ME SAFE DRIVING. THE MANUFACTURER HAS HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED ME AND FAILED TO ADHERE TO VEHICLE SAFETY.
