THE RH (PASSENGER) HEADLIGHT TURNED OFF. THIS WAS NOT A BURNT OUT BULB, BECAUSE AFTER TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF FOR A FEW SECONDS AND TURNING THEM BACK ON THE HEADLIGHT WOULD COME BACK ON. AFTER DRIVING A LITTLE WHILE IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED MANY TIMES UNTIL THE HID BULB WAS REPLACED, BUT THEN AFTER HAVING A NEW BULB FOR ABOUT A MONTH THE PROBLEM CAME BACK, BUT THIS TIME TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF THEN BACK ON WOULD NOT TURN THE RH HEADLIGHT BACK ON. THE RH (PASSENGER) HEADLIGHT WILL NOT TURN ON AT ALL NOW.
THE RUBBER TRUNK RELEASE IS CRACKED, MELTED AND DOES NOT FUNCTION IN COLD WEATHER. IT IS A STICKY GOOEY MESS IN HOT WEATHER. THE ESTIMATE TO REPLACE IT IS $187. IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE DEALER CLAIMS IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. I THINK THAT IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO OPEN A DOOR TO YOUR CAR, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. HOW, FOR INSTANCE WOULD I BE ABLE TO REMOVE MY SPARE TIRE IN THE EVENT OF A FLAT TIRE. BIG SAFETY ISSUE. WHAT IF I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE ONLY ACCESSIBLE WAY OUT WAS THE HATCHBACK? BIG SAFETY ISSUE. REALLY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE GAUGES ALL FAILED. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND WAS TOLD THAT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON I-10 WESTBOUND WHEN THE RED TRIANGLE LIGHT CAME ON. I PULLED OVER AND READ THE BOOKLET WHICH SAID TO GET IMMEDIATE HELP. I DROVE IT ABOUT 5 MILES AND PULLED INTO WEST COVINA TOYOTA. THEY PERFORMED HEALTH CHECK CODE POA2B AND C23128. SOMETHING WITH THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL OR ASSEMBLY. AFTER 4 DAYS THEY COULD NOT TELL ME WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE, SO I HAD IT TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT AND PAID $2800 FOR A REBUILT TRANSMISSION. I WAS WITHOUT MY CAR FOR 5 WEEKS! I BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CORRECTLY DIAGNOSE THIS AND IT PROBABLY IS RELATED TO OTHER COMPLAINTS OF EITHER POWER TRAIN OR ELECTRIC OR DASHBOARD LIGHTS. *TR
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM ON DRY AND WET ROADS HAVE ADVERSELY EFFECTED BRAKING ON MY 2007 PRIUS FOR AS LONG AS I'VE OWNED IT (SINCE 10/2010). WHEN THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM ENGAGES WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE WITH YOUR FOOT THE CAR SLIGHTLY ACCELERATES (OR JUMPS/LUNGES) FORWARD FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND BEFORE THE BRAKES THEN ENGAGE. ON 11/02/2012 THIS ISSUE CONTRIBUTED TO A COLLISION. WITHOUT THIS "GLITCH," I MAY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP MY CAR COMPLETELY (AS I WAS ALREADY ONLY GOING VERY SLOWLY). ON PREVIOUS VISITS TO THE DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT'S "JUST THE WAY THE CAR IS BUILT" AND THAT THERE'S NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO CHANGE IT. *TR
I PURCHASED MY 07 PRIUS FROM A DEALERSHIP IN SEPTEMBER OF 2012. THERE WAS ONLY 1 PREVIOUS OWNER & AT THAT TIME MY CAR'S MILEAGE WAS AROUND 55K. I COMMUTE 1 HR AND 20 MINUTES TO WORK (ONE WAY) & MY FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED AFTER DROPPING MY SON OFF AT DAYCARE EARLY IN THE MORNING, ALMOST A MONTH AFTER PURCHASING MY CAR. I NOTICED MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT WAS OUT. WHEN I GOT INTO MY CAR, I TURNED THE HEADLIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON. BOTH MY HEADLIGHTS CAME BACK ON SO I DIDN'T THINK TWICE ABOUT IT. AFTERWARDS, ALMOST EVERY MONTH I NOTICED MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT TURNED OFF, WHICH STARTED TO CONCERN ME, BUT AFTER GETTING QUOTES ON HOW MUCH THE REPAIRS WOULD BE I KNEW IT WOULD TAKE SOME TIME FOR ME TO BUDGET THE COSTS INTO MY MONTHLY EXPENSES. AFTER ANOTHER MONTH OR SO, I FOUND MYSELF DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 55 WESTBOUND (CARY, NC) AT AROUND 9PM AT NIGHT & BOTH OF MY HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY SHUT OFF. HIGHWAY 55 DOES NOT HAVE MUCH LIGHTING IN THE FIRST PLACE & I AM VERY LUCKY THAT MY 2 YEAR OLD SON WAS NOT WITH ME. I PANICKED BUT QUICKLY TURNED MY HEADLIGHTS OFF & ON AGAIN. FORTUNATELY, THEY TURNED BACK ON. NOW ALMOST EVERY MONTH, & ASIDE FROM ONE OF MY HEADLIGHTS FAILING NEARLY EVERY 2 DAYS, BOTH OF MY HEADLIGHTS RANDOMLY SHUT OFF. IN FACT, MY HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF AGAIN THIS MORNING AT AROUND 5:45AM DURING MY COMMUTE TO WORK ON HIGHWAY 55. I DID SOME RESEARCH BUT FOUND TOYOTA HAS ONLY AGREED TO PAY FOR REPAIRS FOR '04-'09 MODELS (WITH THE SAME HID HEADLIGHT ISSUE) THROUGH THE EARLIER OF 5 YEARS WARRANTY AND 50,000 MILES OR REIMBURSE DRIVERS WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID TO HAVE THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. I'VE ALREADY CONTACTED TOYOTA AT 1800-331-4331 AND FILED A COMPLAINT BUT I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR (AT 102K MILES) WAS NOW INELIGIBLE FOR THIS PROGRAM. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE AN OFFICIAL RECALL TO AVOID ANY SEVERE ACCIDENTS IT CAN CAUSE FOR OWNERS WHO CANNOT AFFORD UPFRONT REPAIRS. *TR
DRIVING AT 65 MPH IN HEAVY EVENING TRAFFIC THE RIGHT REAR STRUT FAILED WHEN THE RETAINER NUT AND SPACER CAME OFF AND THE STRUT/SHOCK ABSORBER CAME OFF THE MOUNT. I LOST CONTROL OF THE PRIUS BUT MANAGED TO PULL OFF TO THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER WITHOUT A CRASH. *TR
FOR THE PAST YEAR, THE RUBBER SURFACE OF THE REAR HATCH RELEASE HAS BEEN GOOEY, LEAVING BLACK MARKS ON MY HANDS. THE FUNCTION OF THE RELEASE HAS BEEN ERRATIC. OFTEN, I CAN'T RELEASE IT AT ALL. IT SEEMS PARTICULARLY BAD IN COOLER WEATHER. I'VE READ THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM AND FIND IT SURPRISING THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THESE VEHICLES TO REPLACE THE ASSEMBLY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WEATHER STRIPS ON THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER WINDOWS WERE PEELING FROM THE BOTTOM. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH ANOTHER MODEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT WATER COULD POSSIBLY ENTER THE VEHICLE AND CAUSE DAMAGE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 104,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST THAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO BECOME DIFFICULT TO KEEP IN THE PROPER LANE OF TRAFFIC. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST LOSS REMAINED AT ALL SPEEDS INCLUDING STANDING STILL AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE TOYOTA DEALER CHECKED THE STEERING AND "RESET" THE STEERING COMPUTER AND TORQUE SENSOR WHICH RETURNED THE STEERING TO NORMAL. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THE LOSS OF POWER ASSIST RETURNED. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THE SAME PROCEDURE OF "RESETTING" THE STEERING COMPUTER WAS PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WENT BACK TO NORMAL AGAIN ! THE DEALER STATED "NO" FAULT CODES WERE EVER PRESENT, AND TOYOTA DENIED HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE 2007 STEERING SYSTEM. I BELIEVE THE STEERING COMPUTER DOES NOT PROPERLY STORE THE TORQUE SENSOR ZERO POINT, THUS SHOULD BE REPLACED. THE TOYOTA DEALER DISAGREED AND TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WAS IN PERFECT OPERATING CONDITION. MY CONCERN IS THE STEERING WILL LOCK UP OR DO SOMETHING TERRIBLE AND CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT ! *TR
THE RUBBER COVER TO THE EXTERNAL TRUNK LATCH HAS MELTED TO THE POINT WHERE IT IS EITHER GOOEY TO THE TOUCH IN WARM WEATHER OR FROZEN SOLID AND IMMOVABLE IN COLDER TEMPERATURES. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE, AT TIMES, DUE TO THE INFLEXIBILITY OF THE RUBBER I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE TRUNK AND, THUS, ACCESS THE SPARE, ANY OF MY REPAIR TOOLS, OUR EARTHQUAKE KIT, FLARES, JUMPERS, ETC. THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE INTERNAL METHOD FOR OPENING THE HATCHBACK/TRUNK. TOYOTA NEEDS A RECALL OF THIS DEFECTIVE PART AS THE COST TO REPAIR IT IS EXORBITANT, QUOTED TO ME AS $352. *TR
AT AN INTERSECTION, THE PRIUS WAS STRUCK ON THE DRIVER SIDE BY A 1999 DODGE CARAVAN. THE FRONT AIRBAGS IN THE DODGE DEPLOYED AND THE DRIVER WAS NOT INJURED. THE PRIUS' CURTAIN AND SIDE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE PRIUS DRIVER SUFFERED HEAD AND BRAIN INJURY, INJURIES TO NECK, UPPER TORSO AND EXTREMITIES. INFORMATION WAS SUPPLIED BY LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE. *TR
TOYOTA PRIUS DASHBOARD FAILED IN IDLE AND WHILE DRIVING POSING A DEATH RISK DUE TO MILEAGE PER HOUR NOT DISPLAYING AND THE INABILITY TO SHUT OFF YOUR CAR WHEN STOPPED THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER AND TOYOTA NEEDS TO RECALL THE WHOLE TOYOTA PRIUS AND GIVE EVERYONE THERE MONEY BACK FOR OVER PAYING FOR THIS CAR IN 2007. *TR
DURING COLD WEATHER I LOSE ALL ODOMETER SPEEDOMETER BACKUP LIGHT GAS GAUGE . BACK UP LIGHTS HAVE CAUSED A LOT OF CLOSE CALL WHEN I'M BACKING UP ONE TIME I GOT CLOSE TO HITTING A PEDESTRIAN BECAUSE THEY DID NOT KNOW I WAS BAKING UP I HAVE RAN OUT OF FUEL ON THE FREEWAY AND I NEVER KNOW HOW FAST I'M GOING. THIS PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED AND TOYOTA KNOWS A BOUT THE PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT ISSUE A RECALL. *TR
WE HAVE HAD SOME UNSEASONABLY HOT WEATHER HERE RECENTLY; ON THE DAY IN QUESTION THE CAR THERMOMETER SAID IT WAS 91 DEGREES IN FULL SHADE. THE RUBBER GASKET COVERING THE HATCH OPENING SWITCH WAS ATTACHED WHEN I PARKED. WHEN I CAME BACK, IT LOOKED LIKE THE GASKET HAD LITERALLY MELTED OFF ONE OF THE SCREWS; THE COVERING WAS JUST HANGING ON TO SCREW ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE BY A FEW GOOEY THREADS. THAT LEFT A MELTED, TAR-LIKE RESIDUE ON THE HATCH OPENING SWITCH. NOW THE SWITCH IS COVERED IN GUNK AND NEARLY INOPERABLE. THE PRIUS DOES NOT HAVE A TRUNK RELEASE, AND WITHOUT A REPAIR THE HATCH IS NEARLY INACCESSIBLE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE HATCH ON THE PRIUS IS A SAFETY ACCESS POINT (THE LARGEST ON THE VEHICLE); THE HATCH IS ALSO THE ONLY WAY TO ACCESS THE BATTERIES STORED IN THE REAR IN CASE OF FIRE OR ACCIDENT. WHEN I GOOGLED THE ISSUE, I FOUND MULTIPLE REPORTS IN HOT WEATHER AREAS OF EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE, BUT I FOUND NO OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY HERE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, AND DEALERSHIPS KEEP THE PART ON HAND IN HOT WEATHER FOR EXACTLY THIS REASON. *TR

WHEN DRIVING THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT WILL GO OUT. WHEN YOU TURN THEM BACK ON THE HEADLIGHT COMES ON JUST FOR A MINUTE OR TWO. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ISSUE AND IS VERY UNSAFE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO FIX THE PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT.
2007 PRIUS REAR HATCH LATCH MELTED OFF. THE REAR HATCH WILL NOT OPEN. THERE IS NO WAY TO GET TO EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT AND SPARE TIRE. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE. PLEASE ISSUE A NATION RECALL AS THIS REPAIR IS NOT COVERED BY UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
REAR HATCH LOCK HAS SOFT PLASTIC COVER WHICH MELTED IN MY HAND WHEN TRYING TO OPEN CAR. PLASTIC COVER TURNED BLACK AND SOFT AND STICKS TO SKIN WHEN YOU TOUCH TO OPEN THE CAR. LOCK ALSO NOW DOES NOT OPEN PROPERLY NOW DUE TO ELECTRICAL PROBLEM IN THE PART. SHOULD BE RECALLED.
RECENTLY PURCHASED VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 4 MONTHS AGO. HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY GO OUT WHILE DRIVING, ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND AT TIMES WILL NOT STAY ON. THEY MAY WORK FOR DAYS AND THEN SUDDENLY WILL START GOING OUT. ONE HEADLIGHT, BOTH HEADLIGHTS, HI BEAMS, LO BEAMS, NO PATTERN TO WHAT GOES OUT OR WORKS WHEN PROBLEM STARTS TO OCCUR. EACH TIME HEADLIGHTS ARE TURNED OFF AND BACK ON THE RESULT OF WHAT IS WORKING OR NOT WORKING IS DIFFERENT. AT TIMES TURNING ON HIGH BEAMS RESULTS IN ALL LIGHTS GOING OUT AT THE SAME TIME. PRESENTS A DANGEROUS SITUATION MAKING IT UNSAFE TO BE CAUGHT AWAY FROM HOME WITH THE CAR AT DUSK. MY 19 YEAR OLD SON SPENT HIS HARD EARNED MONEY TO BUY THIS TOYOTA FOR TRANSPORTATION WHILE AWAY FROM HOME AT COLLEGE. TOYOTA IS UNWILLING TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR COSTLY REPAIRS IN A HIT AND MISS GAME OF LETS THROW MONEY AT THE PROBLEM REPLACING PARTS TRYING TO RESOLVE IT UNTIL THEY "FIX IT". I HAVE NO COMFORT THAT THE PROBLEM IS EVER FIXED REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH MONEY IS SPENT SINCE THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND MAY NOT BE SEEN FOR WEEKS AT A TIME. HOW CAN TOYOTA GET AWAY WITH NOT ADDRESSING THIS SAFETY HAZARD? *TR
MY TOYOTA PRIUS HAS A RUBBER HATCH LATCH COVERING THAT HAS MELTED AND HAS TURNED TO A GOOEY SUBSTANCE THAT ATTACHES TO YOUR FINGERS WHEN BEING OPENED. IT APPEARS TO HAVE IMPACTED THE EASE OF OPENING THE HATCH. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTY TO OPEN THE HATCH. FOR EXAMPLE IF THE TIRE IS NEEDING TO BE CHANGED I AM AFRAID THAT THE ENTRY MAY BE HINDERED DUE TO THE APPARENTLY DEFECTIVE LATCH COVER. WHAT I WOULD LIKE IS FOR NHTSA TO FOLLOW UP WITH TOYOTA ON WHY THIS PART HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. THE RUBBER COVER ON THE HATCH RELEASE HANDLE OF MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS MELTED INTO A STICKY, BLACK TAR SUBSTANCE. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO OPEN. PLEASE HELP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS RANDOMLY SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER, BUT THE SPECIFIC REPAIRS WERE UNKNOWN AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.
THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WILL GO OUT AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING. BY TURNING BOTH HEADLIGHTS 'OFF THEN ON' THIS SEEMS TO CURE THE PROBLEM FOR A FEW MINUTES, HOWEVER, INEVITABLY THE PASSENGER HEADLIGHT WILL TURN OFF AGAIN ON IT'S OWN. THE DEALER REPLACEMENT COST FOR THIS IS $400 WHICH IS EXCESSIVE FOR A HEADLIGHT. REPLACING IT MYSELF REQUIRES REMOVING THE BUMPER AND SKID PLATE, WHICH IS RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT JUST TO REPLACE A SIMPLE HEADLIGHT. REGARDLESS, I DON'T THINK THE HEADLIGHT IS BURNING OUT BECAUSE THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ONLINE. IT SEEMS LIKE MORE OF AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE TOYOTA SHOULD DEAL WITH. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE GEAR SHIFTER FAILED. AS A RESULT, WHENEVER HE ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE THE VEHICLE WOULD SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR'S HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY TURN OFF WHETHER IT BE THE RIGHT OR LEFT LIGHT. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE THE LIGHT TURN ON AGAIN IS TO FLIP YOUR HEADLIGHTS OFF THEN ON AGAIN. AND EVEN THEN, THE LIGHTS WOULD SEEM TO DO THE SAME THING BUT IN SHORTER INTERVALS OF TIME. I HAPPENED TO RECEIVE A TICKET FOR "DRIVING WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS" WHEN IN FACT THEY JUST TURNED OFF WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE. I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR INTO TOYOTA WITH THIS BEING A POPULAR MANUFACTURING DEFECT AMONGST OTHER 2006-07 PRIUS MODELS, BUT TO MY SURPRISE, THE COST FOR BULB REPAIR WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $660. EVEN AFTER SUCH PAYMENT WAS GIVEN AND REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED, THAT WOULD NOT FULLY GUARANTEE A FULL FIX ON THE PROBLEM. *TR
THE HEAD LIGHTS TURN OFF, WHILE DRIVING, WHEN TURNED OFF, AND ON AGAIN IT COMES BACK ON. TOYOTA WILL NOT REPLACE THE LIGHTS BECAUSE WE ARE OVER 50000 MILES. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE PRIUS HIGH INTENSITY HEAD LIGHTS, AND THE WHOLE COMPONENT SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH A BETTER VERSION. HATCH LATCHES SHOULD NOT MELT DOWN IN 2-3 YEARS, AND ACCESS TO THE HATCH IS A LIFE SAFETY ISSUE. WHILE DRIVING OUR CAR, THE DRIVER SIDE LIGHT HAS BEEN SHUTTING OFF. IF YOU TURN THE LIGHT OFF AND ON IT USUAL COMES BACK ON. RECENTLY WE HAVE HAD BOTH LIGHTS SHUT OFF ON THEIR OWN WHILE DRIVING. THEY ADMITTED THIS WAS A PROBLEM BUT OFFERED NO REMEDY OTHER THAN TAKING IT TO THE DEALER. NOT ONLY IS THIS A VERY EXPENSIVE PROBLEM, IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I WAS DRIVING ON A DARK COUNTRY ROAD WHEN THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF, AND I WAS ESSENTIALLY DRIVING BLIND FOR A SHORT TIME. ENTIRE DASHBOARD WENT BLACK (SPEEDOMETER, FUEL GAUGE AND OTHER INDICATOR LIGHTS ALL QUIT PROVIDING READINGS) AND THE ENERGY MONITOR SCREEN PANEL, WHILE STILL LIT, QUIT PROVIDING DATA (THE MILES SHOWN ON THIS PANEL WERE STUCK AT 107). THEREFORE, NO SPEEDOMETER READINGS WERE AVAILABLE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I HAD EXTREME DIFFICULTY TURNING THE PRIUS OFF WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION--DEPRESSED AND HELD POWER BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES, WITH FOOT ON BRAKE AND AUTO IN "PARK". RADIO AND AIR CONDITIONING KEPT RUNNING, DOOR WOULD NOT LOCK AND THE ENERGY MONITOR STILL SHOWED BACKGROUND INFORMATION. OTHERWISE, PRIUS DROVE NORMALLY. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED IN LAST TWO WEEKS. AFTER SEVERAL TRIES, HOLDING POWER BUTTON DOWN FOR SEVERAL SECONDS, I FINALLY DID GET THE PRIUS TO SHUT OFF. AND, WHEN RESTARTED, THE DASHBOARD APPEARED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. NOT HAVING DASHBOARD INDICATORS WHILE DRIVING IS DISTURBING, BUT AUTO COULD BE OPERATED. NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN VEHICLE OFF IS MORE PROBLEMATIC BECAUSE IT IS DIFFICULT TO TELL PRIUS WAS NOT SHUT DOWN (THE FAN CONTINUES RUNNING WHEN THE CAR SHUTS DOWN NORMALLY AND ELECTRIC MOTOR IS ALMOST SILENT)--MY INDICATION WAS THAT THE RADIO WAS STILL ON AND AIR CONDITIONING WAS STILL RUNNING. I CAN BEST DESCRIBE IT AS BEING A VISCOUS BLACK GLOB LIKE ROOFING TAR. TO OPEN THE HATCH, YOU HAVE TO TOUCH THIS BLACK GOO EACH TIME, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO OPERATE THE HATCH RELEASE. I THOUGHT THAT THIS MIGHT BE A SINGULAR ISSUE, BUT HAVE FOUND THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL CAR OWNERS, PARTICULARLY IN FLORIDA AND CALIFORNIA. I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND NOTICED AN INCREASE AFTER A PARTICULARLY HOT SPELL. TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THIS, AND IS SELLING THE ENTIRE WIRING HARNESS FOR $96 PLUS REPAIR COSTS, AND HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT RECALLING THIS. FROM A SAFETY PERSPECTIVE, THIS MEANS YOU CAN EXPERIENCE EXTREME DIFFICULTY OPENING THE REAR HATCH (A LIFE SAFETY ACCESS POINT), AND WILL GET STICKY BLACK TAR ON YOU FROM THE MELTED DOWN RUBBER COVER OF THE EXTERIOR HATCH RELEASE HANDLE.
