I WAS ISSUED A WARNING TICKET FOR HAVING ONE HEADLIGHT OUT. WHEN I TRIED TO INVESTIGATE THE FAILED HEADLIGHT, I COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM... EVERY TIME I LOOKED AT MY HEADLIGHTS THEY WERE BOTH ON AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL. ONE WEEK LATER I WAS DRIVING IN THE DESERT ON A ROAD WITH NO STREET LIGHTS AND BOTH HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING OVER 45 MPH WHILE HEADING INTO A CURVE. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE CAR UNDER CONTROL AND ARRIVE SAFELY AT A STOP, AS IT WAS PITCH BLACK OUTSIDE. I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON TO RESTORE LIGHTING, BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN 5 MINUTES LATER. WEATHER CONDITION WAS MID-70'S AND A CLEAR DRY NIGHT. WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THEY SAW ONE HEADLIGHT GOING BAD AFTER LEAVING THE LIGHTS ON FOR TEN MINUTES, BUT WOULDN'T DEAL WITH THE OTHER HEADLIGHT OR INVESTIGATE ANY PROBLEM THAT MAY HAVE LED TO THE INCIDENT. THEY INSISTED THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND THAT THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD TEST IT IS IF I PURCHASED AND PAID FOR INSTALLATION OF 2 NEW HID LAMPS... OVER $800. THEY SAID TOYOTA'S OFFICIAL POSITION WAS TO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT AND THAT BOTH LAMPS MUST BE REPLACED. THEY WOULD NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO TESTING THE BALLAST, NOR WOULD THEY ADDRESS WHY BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED WITHIN LESS THAN A WEEK OF ONE ANOTHER. ULTIMATELY, THE DEALER'S SOLUTION WAS TO TELL ME TO JUST TURN MY LIGHTS ON AND OFF REAL QUICKLY. *TR
THE MATERIAL IN THE TRUNK DOOR HANDLE IS DISSOLVING AND OR DISINTEGRATING. I RECENTLY RESEARCHED THE DEFECT ON THE INTERNET AND OBSERVED WHAT I WAS EXPERIENCING HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY DOCUMENTED IN OTHER COMPLAINTS. IN A RECENT VISIT TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE I PRESENTED WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE REPAIR WAS OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THERE WOULD BE A CHARGE IF I WANTED THE REPAIR. THE CHARGE IMO WAS EXCESSIVE FOR SOMETHING THAT IMO WAS A BUILT IN DEFECT AND DESERVES A RECALL. *TR
FAILED COMPONENT IS THE RUBBER COVER ON THE TRUNK/HATCH SWITCH. HEAT HAS SPLIT THE COVER COMPROMISING THE INTEGRITY OF THE ELECTRICAL SWITCH. HEAT HAS MADE THE RUBBER A STICKY MESS. THIS HAS MADE THE TRUNK/HATCH DIFFICULT TO OPEN, IMPOSSIBLE FOR MY WIFE. REPAIRS FOR THIS MISTAKE MADE BY TOYOTA WILL COST $65 FOR THE PART AND AS MUCH AS $150 FOR LABOR. SOME DEALERS APPARENTLY HAVE PAID FOR REPAIRS IN SOME AREAS OF THE COUNTRY. I'M AWARE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE RUBBER COVER IS DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE MADE GOOD BY TOYOTA. IF, IN AN EMERGENCY ONE IS UNABLE TO ACCESS THE HATCH FOR EQUIPMENT; CABLES, EXTINGUISHER, SPARE TIRE, FLARES, ETC., THIS COULD BE SEEN AS A SERIOUS THREAT TO INJURY OR WORSE.
THE RUBBER COVER ON THE REAR HATCH LATCH HAS DETERIORATED SO SEVERELY THAT THE LATCH HANDLE WILL NO LONGER WORK. THE RUBBERIZED COVER HAS BECOME GOOEY AND STICKY, AND COMES OFF ON YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU TOUCH IT. THERE IS NO ALTERNATE TRUNK RELEASE ON THIS VEHICLE, SO WITH THE HANDLE MECHANISM GUMMED UP BY THE DETERIORATING RUBBER COVER, THERE IS NO WAY TO ACCESS THE TRUNK OF THE VEHICLE. THIS PIECE HAS BEEN DETERIORATING OVER THE PAST THREE TO FOUR YEARS. WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO HOLD OFF FOR A TOYOTA RECALL ON THIS PIECE, BUT NOW WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED.
MY SON WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A U-TURN AND WAS HIT BY A CAR GOING THE SAME DIRECTION. HIS HEAD BROKE THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW AND THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE AIR BAG IN THE OTHER CAR DID OPEN.
ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK ON THE FRONTAGE ROAD ALONG I-5. MY TIRES HIT THE GRAVEL AND I LOST CONTROL. I WENT THROUGH THE GRASS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD DOWN A DIP AND LANDED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS. I BEGAN TO ROLL AND ROLLED THE CAR FROM SIDE TO SIDE AT LEAST 15 TIMES. A ROW OF TREES IS WHAT STOPPED ME. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING AND I WAS STILL BUCKLED IN THE DRIVERS SEAT. I HAD TO KICK OUT THE WINDSHIELD IN ORDER TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. I WENT TO EMERGENCY THAT NIGHT WHERE I WAS X-RAYED AND CHECKED OUT. I ENDED UP WITH ONLY MAJOR BRUISING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY, THE CHP THAT RESPONDED WAS SURE I WAS DEAD. THEY TOLD ME THEY EXPECTED TO SEE A DEAD BODY IN THE CAR. I BARELY ESCAPED WITH MY LIFE AND THE AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED IN THE CAR. *JB
THE HEAD LIGHTS JUST GO OFF WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING AND YOU MUST TURN THEM OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN TO GET THEM TO WORK .I ALREADY HAD THIS REPAIRED AND IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN AND TO MY KNOWLEDGE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL AND OBVIOUSLY ITS A SAFETY HAZARD. *TR
THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT FREQUENTLY FAILS TO TURN ON. SOMETIMES IT TURNS ON, THEN SHUTS OFF WITHIN THE COURSE OF A DRIVE. SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T TURN ON AT ALL. IT SEEMS LIKE IT MUST BE A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, AS THE BULB ITSELF CONTINUES TO LIGHT, IT JUST DOESN'T LIGHT ALL THE TIME. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT, IN THE MEAN TIME, IS PERFECTLY FINE AND NEVER HAS PROBLEMS, WHICH ALSO SUGGESTS SOME KIND OF ELECTRICAL/CONNECTOR ISSUE. *TR
WHEN I STARTED MY PRIUS AND THE DASH LIGHTS DID NOT COME ON (FUEL GAUGE, MILEAGE, SPEEDOMETER ETC). I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND THE BACKUP CAMERA PICTURE DID NOT APPEAR ON THE SCREEN. THE SCREEN WAS ON BUT CONTINUED TO SHOW THE CONSUMPTION SCREEN. I THEN PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND HIT THE POWER BUTTON AND THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN POWER OFF. I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE THEN PARK AND REVERSE THEN PARK SEVERAL TIMES HITTING THE POWER BUTTON AFTER EACH TRY AND THE CAR EVENTUALLY POWERED OFF. I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND HEADED TO THE GOLF COURSE AND CALLED TOYOTA AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE SAME DAY. THE NEXT TIME I GOT IN THE CAR (ABOUT 4 HOURS LATER) THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON AND I DROVE HOME AND THE CAR POWERED OFF NORMALLY. I CANCELLED THE APPOINTMENT AT TOYOTA FOR NOW AND WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THE SERVICE PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS PULLED OVER WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT BY KANSAS HIGHWAY PATROL AND ADVISED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT HEADLIGHT WAS OUT. I EXITED A FEW MILES UP AHEAD AT WICHITA AND SPENT THE NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING I DROVE TO MY ORIGINAL DESTINATION OF ENID, OK AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, AND THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG BECAUSE THE HEADLIGHT WORKED PERFECTLY. SINCE THEN, I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THAT HEADLIGHT WORKING ONLY INTERMITTENTLY AND I'VE TAKEN IT TO MY HOME DEALERSHIP IN COLUMBIA, MO (MACHENS TOYOTA) AND BEEN TOLD THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN STOPPED IN THIS CAR BY LOCAL POLICE TWICE, ADVISING HER THAT THE HEADLIGHT IS OUT, AND I'VE BEEN TOLD THIS SAME THING BY FRIENDS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. IT SEEMS THAT THE HEADLIGHT WORKS INITIALLY WHEN TURNED ON, THEN IT CEASES TO BE ILLUMINATED AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE OR SO. IF I GO AHEAD AND TURN THE LIGHTS COMPLETELY OFF AND THEN TURN THEM BACK ON, IT WILL WORK AGAIN FOR A MINUTE OR TWO AND THEN GO OUT AGAIN. I HAVE "GOOGLED" THIS AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND SOME CONSUMERS HAVE SPENT UP TO $2600 TRYING TO GET VARIOUS PARTS REPLACED AND STILL, THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SERIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND I CANNOT OR WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TRYING UNSUCCESSFULLY TO REMEDIATE THIS IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE! *TR
THE TAILGATE SWITCH HAD A RUBBER COVER THAT IS MELTING AND BECOME NONFUNCTIONAL AT TIMES. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON MANY PRIUS. THE BREAKDOWN STARTS AFTER WARRANTY RUNS OUT IN MANY CARS. *TR
THE HATCHBACK RELEASE LATCH OF MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS DEGRADED ("MELTED" ALMOST). IT NO LONGER FUNCTIONS PROPERLY, AND I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE BACK HATCH DOOR EASILY. SOMETIMES IT REQUIRES CONSIDERABLE EFFORT TO GET IT OPEN. I AM CONCERNED THAT IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE DOOR OPEN. THIS IS A MAJOR CAUSE FOR CONCERN AND IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RUBBER ON THE TRUNK MELTED AND LEFT A BLACK TAR SUBSTANCE ON HIS HAND WHENEVER THE TRUNK WAS OPENED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED DAILY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
THE TRUNK HINGE HAS MELTED, IT LOOKS LIKE THE PLASTIC ON THE HINGE HAS COME APART THUS NOT ALLOWING THE TRUNK TO CLOSE. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER TWICE NOW WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW WITH MY PRIUS 2007 WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES. THE CAR STUTTERS WHEN IT CHANGES FROM HYBRID TO GAS. SERVICED ONLY BY TOYOTA. WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR A RECALL I ASKED THEM TO FIX THE PROBLEM . THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM AND CALLED IN A SPECIALIST AND SUBSEQUENTLY WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS TYPICAL WEAR ON A CAR THIS OLD (5 YEARS, 59,000 MILES). THIS WAS FROM A REPAIR SPECIALIST SENT FROM TOYOTA WHEN THE REGULAR SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. I DRIVE ON HIGHWAY S EVERYDAY TO WORK AND HOME AND I AM A NERVOUS WRECK, WORRYING THAT THE CAR WILL JUST COME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS WHEN I GO THRU A CAR WASH THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT GETS MOISTURE INSIDE. WHEN I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE SERVICE DEPT AT TOYOTA I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $600 TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT. THIS WAS WAY BEFORE IT HAD FALLEN OUT OF WARRANTY (36,000) BUT OF COURSE THEY DID NOT TELL ME THAT IT WAS COVERED, IN FACT THEY TOLD ME WHAT IT WOULD COST TO REPLACE! NOW THE BULB IS ALSO FLICKERING ON AND OFF IN THIS SAME HEADLIGHT. DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. TOYOTA QUOTED ME $270.00 TO CHANGE THE LIGHT BULB. THE REASON I WAS GIVEN WAS THAT THEY HAVE TO TAKE OFF THE ENTIRE FRONT BUMPER TO CHANGE AN $11.00 BULB AT AUTOZONE. WE WERE TOLD THAT IF MY HAND WAS SMALL ENOUGH I COULD TRY TO DO IT MYSELF. I CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE, AND WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA WAS DISCOUNTING THE BULB, IT NORMALLY SHOULD COST $420.00. THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 50,000 MILES BUT DID NOT ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE EITHER. I ONLY FOUND OUT BECAUSE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS DRAGGING ITS FEET IN DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM SO I CALLED CORPORATE AND MENTIONED THE MOISTURE PROBLEM AND THAT WAS HOW I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS NOT ONLY MY CAR. *TR
THE 2007 PRIUS ENGINE AND SAFETY WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON WHILE DRIVING AND THE CAR STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS HAS OCCURRED 4 TO 5 TIMES IN THE LAST 4 MONTHS. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY HAVE DRIVEN IT, KEPT IT OVERNIGHT, AND COULD NOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THE THIRD TIME, THE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE 12 VOLT BATTERY, WHICH WE REPLACED FOR $348.85. THE CAR STALLED AGAIN - SAME SAFETY CONCERNS - STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. LUCKILY THE CAR BEHIND ME DID NOT HIT ME AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A SIDE STREET. THERE WAS NOT ANY POWER. THE WINDOWS AND AIR CONDITIONING WERE NOT WORKING AS WELL. I SAT IN THE ARIZONA HEAT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND THAN GOT IT TO START BY PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK OVER AND OVER. ALL SAFETY WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, AS I DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS SHAKING AND IN TEARS, FEARFUL FOR MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF OTHERS AS I DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP LESS THAN TWO MONTHS SINCE THE 12 VOLT BATTERY HAD BEEN REPLACED. I HAVE GOTTEN THE CAR SERVICED AT THE DEALERSHIP AS STATED IN THE MANUAL - EVERYTIME. THE STALLING OF THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING AND THE LACK OF THE DEALER TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS OF GRAVE CONCERN. I AM VERY LUCKY THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN REAR-ENDED OR KILLED WHEN THE CAR HAS STALLED. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AND IT APPEARS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED IN MANY PRIUS VEHICLES. THE DEALERSHIP KEEPS SAYING THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO HAPPEN TO PROTECT AMERICANS THAT DRIVE THESE CARS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL REASONS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT SUDDENLY CAUSING A TOTAL LOSS OF ASSISTED STEERING. WHICH CAUSED AN ABRUPT CHANGE IN STEERING ABILITY ALMOST CAUSING ME TO HIT A CAR WHILE TURNING. THE DEALER DETERMINED IT WAS THE ECM AND NEEDED A NEW ONE AT AN ASTRONOMICAL COST OF OVER $1000 TO FIX. *JS

HID HEADLIGHT RANDOM FAILURE WHILE DRIVING PRIUS. UNRELIABLE TO DRIVE VEHICLE DURING THE NIGHT. *TR
ABOUT A YEAR AGO, THE PASSENGER HEAD LIGHT STARTED GOING OUT. WE WOULD SELECT THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON AND THEY WOULD COME ON. THIS WOULD HAPPEN A COUPLE OF TIMES IN A 30 MILE TRIP. MORE RECENTLY BOTH HEAD LIGHTS WOULD START GOING OUT. SOMETIMES IT IS THE LEFT, SOMETIMES IT IS THE RIGHT, SOMETIMES IT IS BOTH HEADLIGHTS. IT IS GETTING MORE AND MORE FREQUENT. TODAY, AT 6:30AM (STILL VERY DARK OUTSIDE) BOTH HEAD LIGHTS WENT OUT APPROX 6 TIMES IN A 30 MILE TRIP DOWN THE INTERSTATE. I HAVE TALKED TO TOYOTA ABOUT THE ONE HEADLIGHT BEFORE AND THEY SAID THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WILL NOT COVER ANY CARS OVER 70,000 MILES. THEY SAY THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WILL NEVER GO OUT. FOR ONE LIGHT, IT IS $400. READING FORUMS THEY SAY IT CAN BE A COMPUTER MODULE WHICH RUNS APPROX $3500. I BELIEVE THAT THIS VEHICLE IS INCREDIBLY UNSAFE IF BOTH OF THE HEADLIGHTS ARE GOING OUT WHILE AT HIGH SPEEDS (OR EVEN ANYTIME WHILE IT IS DARK OUTSIDE). *TR
HID HEADLIGHTS FAILED, GO ON AND OFF AT RANDOM TIMES. IT STARTED AT 45,000 MILES AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THEM AT NO COST TO ME AND NOW THE LIGHTS ARE FAILING AGAIN AT 109,000. I WAS TOLD NOT TO TURN THEM ON DURING DAYLIGHT TO HELP THEM LAST LONGER. I USE THEM DURING THE DAY, DEPENDING ON WHAT ROAD I AM ON FOR SAFETY REASONS. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT LIGHTS SHOULD FAIL SO FREQUENTLY.
THE REAR TRUNK RELEASE HAS MELTED AND THE TRUNK CANNOT OPEN OR IF IT DOES REQUIRES MUCH EFFORT. POSES A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
DRIVERS SIDE HEADLIGHT FAILS INTERMITTENTLY. FIRST FAILURE WAS AT 39K MILES. *TR
THIS IS A WELL PUBLICIZED PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM NOW OCCURS MULTIPLE TIMES EVERY DAY> I TOOK POSSESSION OF THIS VEHICLE IN MARCH, 2011 AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO VERIFY THAT THE PROBLEM WAS OR WAS NOT OCCURRING FROM THE FIRST DAY I HAD THE VEHICLE.. I FIRST NOTICED THE RANDOM AND VARIABLE HEADLIGHT FAILURE ABOUT FOUR MONTHS AGO... IT OCCURS ON A REGULAR BASIS NOW.... AND IS TEMPORARILY "FIXED" BY CYCLING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH.... IT IS NOT ALWAYS THE SAME HEADLIGHT THAT FAILS, WHICH SHOULD TELL YOU IT IS NOT THE BULB... WHICH SO MANY DEALERS ARE HAPPILY CHARGING TO REPLACE. MY VEHICLE NOW HAS OVER 84000 MILES ON IT AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS.... SO WHOEVER DECIDED THAT 50,000 MILES IS A REASONABLE CUT-OFF FOR TOYOTA'S RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM.... I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE THINKING... THOUSANDS OF CARS DO NOT FAIL OVER 5 MODEL YEARS STARTING AT AS LOW AS 20,000 MILES FROM "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AGING AND FAILURE".... THIS IS A SERIOUS AND INEXCUSABLE DESIGN FLAW WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE LONG LIST OF RECALLS WHICH TODAY'S TOYOTA IS COMING TO BE KNOWN FOR.... DRIVERS SIDE HID HEADLIGHT IN MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS WENT OUT TWICE IN 5 MINUTES WHILE DRIVING. I WAS ABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE BOTH TIMES BY TURNING THE LIGHTS COMPLETELY OFF AND BACK ON. THE FIRST TIME THE LIGHT WENT OUT, A DRIVER NEXT TO ME NOTIFIED ME AS I WAS GETTING ON THE INTERSTATE. I PULLED THE CAR OVER ON THE INTERSTATE, TURNED THE LIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON, WHICH RESOLVED THE ISSUE. THE SECOND TIME THE DRIVERS SIDE LIGHT WENT OUT WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE DARK INTERSTATE AT NIGHT AT APPROX. 60 MPH. THIS WAS WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF THE FIRST INCIDENT. *TR
MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENTLY STARTED TO FLICKERED OFF. THIS ISSUE HAS NOT GONE AWAY SINCE IT STARTED. HAD HUSBAND CHECK TO SEE IF THERE WAS A LOOSE CONNECTION. NO LOOSE CONNECTIONS. WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE OTHER PRIUS OWNERS WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, AND THERE ARE OTHERS WITH EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUES! WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO TWO TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS WITHIN GERMANY WITH NO RESOLUTION BUT EXPENSIVE BILLS DUE TO THE MECHANICS HOOKING IT UP TO COMPUTER SYSTEMS TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE HEADLIGHTS OF MY PRIUS ARE HID AND AT 60,000 THE RIGHT LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY BEGAN TURNING OFF RANDOMLY AND NOW BOTH ARE DOING IT IN THE MATTER OF A MONTH. SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHILE ENTERING ONE OF THE STATE OF WISCONSIN EMISSION TESTING CENTERS FOR ANNUAL REQUIRED TEST. I HAD 10 TO 15 SECONDS TO RESPOND AFTER THE CAR TOOK OFF. I PLACED BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP, AS THERE WAS NO TIME TO TRY ANYTHING ELSE. I HAD TO CHOOSE TO HIT THE TESTING CENTER OR A POST; I MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO HIT THE POST. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. INSURER DECLARED PRIUS A TOTAL LOSS. THIS REALLY SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE - WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL? 2. THE BACK-UP CAMERA OFTEN STOPS WORKING FOR A FEW DAYS AT A TIME. ENGINE OIL DISAPPEARS CONSTANTLY. THERE IS NO APPARENT LEAKAGE OF ENGINE OIL. HAVE TAKEN TO TOYOTA DEALERS DURING SERVICING MANY TIMES SINCE THAN AND MENTIONED THE PROBLEM. THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY IT IS HAPPENING. IN ORDER TO KEEP ENGINE OIL IN RECOMMENDED LEVEL I HAVE BEEN POURING RECOMMENDED GRADE ENGINE OIL (5W30) EVERY OTHER WEEK.
THE REAR HATCH RELEASE ON MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS BEGUN TO DETERIORATE AND TURN INTO A RUBBERY AND STICKY BLACK MESS. THIS ISSUE INTERFERES WITH THE USE OF THE HATCH AS THE RUBBER NOT ONLY GETS ON YOUR FINGERS BUT APPEARS TO BE BLOCKING THE RELEASE MECHANISM. THE DETERIORATION STARTED DURING THE SUMMER OF 2011. THE ISSUE HAS WORSENED AND YESTERDAY I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE REAR HATCH WHATSOEVER. *TR
THE BACK LATCH COVERING HAS A VINYL(?) COVERING WHICH HAS BECOME STICKY AND THE LATCH ITSELF IS DIFFICULT TO OPEN, RESULTING IN CONTINUED ATTEMPTS. IT IS A HINDRANCE TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE TRUNK AREA AND THUS ACCESS TO THE SPARE TIRE IF NEEDED. *TR
ANOTHER COMPLAINT REGARDING THE RUBBER COVER OF THE 2007 PRIUS HATCH RELEASE/LATCH. THE RUBBER COVERING HAS DETERIORATED AND DEGRADED IN A WAY THAT CAUSES IT TO MELT AND BECOME STICKY IN WARM OR HOT WEATHER; TOUCHING THE COVER CAUSES THE MATERIAL TO STICK TO FINGERS, AND IS VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE, REQUIRING THE USE OF A SOLVENT CLEANER. IN COLD AND FREEZING WEATHER, THE COVER BECOMES VERY STIFF AND NOT FLEXIBLE, AND IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PRESS, CAUSING THE HATCH TO BE IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN. THIS IS A BASIC OPERATIONAL PROBLEM, RENDERING THE HATCHBACK NON-FUNCTIONAL - IT CAN'T BE OPENED, OR IF IT CAN BE OPENED IT LEAVES A SUBSTANCE ON THE DRIVER'S BODY. ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE, AS WHEN THE HATCH CAN'T BE OPENED THIS IS ESSENTIALLY BEING LOCKED OUT OF THE TRUNK WHERE THE SPARE TIRE AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT ARE LOCATED. DEALER WILL CHARGE APPROXIMATELY $300 FOR PART AND LABOR TO REPAIR THIS. I'VE CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS: "IT IS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY, AND THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS, SO TOYOTA WILL NOT BE COVERING THIS REPAIR." I DID A SEARCH IN THE NHTSA COMPLAINT DATABASE AND FOUND 147 OWNERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. VERY DISCOURAGING AND IRRESPONSIBLE THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND ASSIST OWNERS WITH RESOLVING THIS ISSUE.
MY VEHICLE SEEMED TO BE HAVING A RECURRENT PROBLEMS WITH HEADLIGHTS. INITIALLY IT STARTED WITH RANDOMLY TURNING OFF . I TRIED TO GET THIS INVESTIGATED BY THE DEALERSHIP BUT WAS TOLD THAT THESE ARE SOMETIMES DRIVEN BY WEATHER CONDITIONS AND COULD HAPPEN. WIRES ARE NOT LOOSE. I SEE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND SEE THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT DONE A RECALL ON THIS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT AS YOU DIM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS, THE LIGHTED SYMBOL FOR THE EMERGENCY FLASHER LIGHT SWITCH GOES COMPLETELY DARK BEFORE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS DO. SO, ON A DARK NIGHT, YOU DIM THE LIGHTS TO MAKE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS JUST BRIGHT ENOUGH TO READ, WITHOUT EXCESS REFLECTION OR DISTRACTION, AND THE EMERGENCY FLASHER SWITCH BECOMES INVISIBLE BECAUSE ITS LIGHT WENT COMPLETELY OUT BEFORE THE OTHER INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS DID. THIS INCREASES DISTRACTION AND REDUCES REACTION TIME WHEN YOU NEED TO FIND AND TURN ON THE EMERGENCY FLASHER LIGHT SWITCH. I DOUBT THIS PROBLEM IS LIMITED TO JUST MY CAR. THE SIMPLE SOLUTION (EVERYTHING SEEMS SIMPLE TO THE GUY NOT DOING THE WORK) WOULD BE TO DESIGN AND WIRE THE DASH PANEL LIGHTS SO THAT THE EMERGENCY FLASHER SWITCH LIGHT STAYS A LITTLE BRIGHTER THAN ALL THE OTHER LIGHTS, AS THEY ALL DIM. THAT WAY, THE SWITCH YOU MIGHT MOST NEED IN A HURRY WILL BE VISIBLE, EVEN IF YOU HAVE DIMMED YOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS. REAR LATCH FOR THE HATCHBACK DOOR IS INOPERABLE IN COLD WEATHER (+/-<40*), THE DOOR LATCHING RELEASE MECHANISM FREEZES AND CANNOT BE OPENED. IN HOT WEATHER (+/->80*) THE COVERING FOR THE MECHANISM MELTS AND IT GETS ALL OVER YOUR HANDS AND IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OFF. THE FREEZING ASPECT OF THIS DEFECT IS DANGEROUS WHEN THE BACK CANNOT BE OPENED. I HAVE TALKED WITH TOYOTA ABOUT THIS BUT THEY WILL NOT OFFER MUCH HELP IN RESOLVING THE PROBLEM. PASSENGER HEADLIGHT WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING. WHEN I WENT TO REPLACE IT THE NEXT DAY, THE LIGHT WAS WORKING. TODAY (DEC 30, 2011) PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. *KB
THE HATCHBACK HANDLE/RELEASE IS SOFT AND GOOEY, AND AT TIMES THE RELEASE TO OPEN THE HATCHBACK WILL NOT WORK. GOOEY BLACK SUBSTANCE GETS ALL OVER HANDS AND FINGERS WHEN YOU TRY TO "POP" THE HATCHBACK. UNABLE TO GET THE TRUNK TO OPEN ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS. THERE IS NO INTERNAL RELEASE SWITCH INSIDE THE CAR. SINCE THE SPARE TIRE IS IN THE TRUNK, THERE COULD POTENTIALLY BE NO ACCESS TO THE TIRE. OBVIOUSLY, IF I AM UNABLE TO ACCESS THEM, THE FAILURE COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS BODILY INJURY OR DEATH TO THE PASSENGERS, INCLUDING MY CHILDREN. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA REQUESTING THAT TOYOTA CORRECT THIS PROBLEM ON MY CAR, BUT THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT: 1) THEY ARE UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM; 2) MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND I DO NOT HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY; AND, 3) THEY WILL NOT FIX THE CAR. DO PEOPLE NEED TO GET INJURED OR DIE BEFORE TOYOTA REACTS? *TR
