I OWN A TOYOTA PRIUS 2007 AND I EXPERIENCING BRAKES NOT ENGAGING AS THEY SHOULD WHEN APPLIED. I NOTICE MY ABS VSC BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON MY DASHBOARD. I TOOK IT IN TO A SHOP AND WAS TOLD I HAVE A BAD ABS ACTUATOR. I RESEARCHED IT ON THE RECALL LIST AND IT WAS LISTED BUT EXPIRED IN DEC 2017. TOYOTA SHOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM. THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM.
STARTED GETTING BRAKE ACTUATOR FAILURE NOISES IN MY 2007 PRIUS BACK IN MARCH 2020 AND TOOK IT TO THE WEST COAST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN LONG BEACH, CA. THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ABS SYSTEM EVEN THOUGH THE GRINDING NOISE I NOW KNOW IS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROBLEM WAS GOING OFF. THE OTHER DAY THE ABS LIGHT WARNING CAME ON AS WELL AS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT. I PULLED OVER ON WASHINGTON BLVD AND ARLINGTON IN LOS ANGELES AND WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND STARTED TO MOVE FORWARD I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE BRAKES AND TURNED THE CAR OFF IMMEDIATELY. FROM WHAT I'VE READ THIS IS EXTREMELY COMMON! TOYOTA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY'S ON MANY OF THEIR VEHICLES TO 10 YEARS BUT THERE WERE NO RECALLS SO IF THIS PART MALFUNCTIONS A DAY AFTER THE WARRANTY THEN YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK. THE BRAKE SYSTEM IS JUST ABOUT THE MOST DANGEROUS PART TO FAIL. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE SAME THING HAPPENED AT A HIGHER SPEED.
2007 PRIUS 144K MILES WHEN PROBLEM 1ST OCCURRED. CAR SERVICED REGULARLY - OIL CHANGED EVERY 3500 MILES. MASTER WARNING LIGHT WOULD COME ON RANDOMLY WHEN TURNING OR GOING UP/DOWN HILL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS RUN REPEATEDLY (AT TOYOTA AND AT LOCAL MECHANIC) NOTHING EVER FOUND. 12/2016 BROUGHT CAR TO TOYOTA SERVICE COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING INITIALLY. 2+ HOURS LATER TOLD OIL IS VERY LOW WHICH MADE NO SENSE; NO OIL SPOT IN GARAGE, CAR PASSED INSPECTION AND WASN'T DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE . WAS TOLD THE 'OIL WARNING INDICATOR' WAS LIT DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE OIL WARNING LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. EVER. (OIL INDICATOR SHOULD COME ON WHEN CAR IS STARTED AND REMAIN ON -BRIEFLY IF THE OIL IS LOW. IT DOES NOT.) TOLD TECH THAT ONLY THE MASTER LIGHT COMES ON AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES. NEVER GIVEN AN EXPLANATION. PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. MASTER INDICATOR ONLY COMES ON WHEN THERE IS ALMOST NO OIL. LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED I ADDED 4 QTS. OF OIL, DROVE 687 MILES AND HAD TO ADD ANOTHER 4 QTS. AT THIS POINT I HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL EVERY TIME I GET INTO THE CAR.
WHILE DRIVING AROUND A CORNER ON CITY STREETS, BRAKING SUDDENLY BECAME VERY DIFFICULT, AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SKID WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. A HIGH-PITCHED ELECTRONIC SQUEAL CAME FROM THE DASHBOARD, AND THE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT, ABS LIGHT, VSC LIGHT, AND MASTER WARNING LIGHT ALL TURNED ON. THESE ARE ALL LISTED AS SYMPTOMS OF A FAILED BRAKE ACTUATOR. AFTER CONTACTING A LICENSED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, I WAS DIRECTED TO THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE DEPARTMENT. AFTER BEING ESCALATED TO A SUPERVISOR, I WAS INFORMED THAT TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT THAT THE WARRANTY EXTENSION THEY USED TO COVER IT EXPIRED IN 2017, AND THEY REFUSED TO COVER THE COST OF REPLACEMENT (~$3000). I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE CAUSE FOR A SAFETY RECALL, AS IT HAPPENED SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. IT WAS PURE LUCK THAT THIS DIDN'T RESULT IN A CRASH.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 70 MPH WHEN THE BREAK LIGHT, ABS LIGHT, AND TIRE LIGHT ALL CAME ON ACCOMPANIED BY A HIGH PITCH BEEPING. AS I ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER THE BREAKS WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. WHEN I CONTACTED TOYOTA ABOUT THE ISSUE THEY LET ME KNOW IT WAS A PROBLEM THEY WERE AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT DIDN'T BELIEVE THAT HAVING YOUR BREAKS GO OUT WAS GROUNDS FOR A RECALL. I WAS ALMOST INVOLVED IN A HIGH SPEED CRASH WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO STOP BECAUSE OF THIS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING, A CODE ILLUMINATED INDICATING TRANSMISSION WOULD LOCK FOR SAFETY AND TO PLACE THE VEHICLE ON A FLAT SURFACE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HE ARRIVED AT HIS RESIDENCE AND POWERED OFF THE ENGINE, THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER NOR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200,000.
I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY IN HOUSTON (INTERSTATE-10) AND MY CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED. I WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED DUE TO THE CAR STOPPING SUDDENLY WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. THERE WAS ONLY A NARROW SHOULDER AND I HAD TO WAIT FOR THE TOW TRUCK. THE ISSUE IS THE INVERTER PUMP WHICH WAS A RECALL IN 2011 (12V536000) AND THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TO CALL TOYOTA US HQ. AFTER TWO WEEKS, MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS, AND ZERO FOLLOW THROUGH FROM TOYOTA, I AM STILL WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING CAR. THE TOTAL LACK OF CARE AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM TOYOTA IS APPALLING AND FRANKLY RECKLESS. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE ON THE CAR AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE. MY WIFE AND I ARE BLESSED THAT WE WERE ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THE STALL ON THE HIGHWAY UNSCATHED; HOWEVER, THIS CAN HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE AT NIGHT AND PERHAPS THAT PERSON(S) WILL NOT BE SO LUCKY.
I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY MY BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, ABS WARNING LIGHT, AND OTHER LIGHTS CAME ON AS WELL AS A CONSTANT BEEPING NOISE. THE BRAKES ALMOST STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY; IT ONLY WORKED ABOUT 10%. MY FOOT WAS ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR WAS STILL MOVING. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER, BUT THIS ISSUE LEFT ME IN A COMPROMISING POSITION FOR MY SAFETY AND COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT FROM IT. THE WARNING LIGHTS GO AWAY AFTER TURNING OFF THE CAR, BUT THEN THEY COME BACK ON RANDOMLY. BASED ON WHAT I'VE READ ONLINE ON SIMILAR ISSUES, I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE ACTUATOR.
WE NOTICED THE RED TRIANGLE LIGHT AND SO WE CHECKED THE ENGINE OIL. THE DIP STICK WAS DRY. I PUT OIL IN THE ENGINE AND THE RED TRIANGLE WENT AWAY. I KEPT AN EYE ON THE OIL LEVEL OCCASIONALLY I NEEDED TO PUT MORE OIL IN THE ENGINE. 3 MONTHS AFTER TAKING THE CAR FOR A REGULAR OIL CHANGE AT THE TOYOTA DEALER THE RED TRIANGLE CAME UP AGAIN AND THIS TIME I SPOKE TO THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE ISSUE. THE RESPONSE WAS THAT IT WOULD BE EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR THE CAR AND THE BEST SOLUTION WAS TO BUY A NEW CAR. I WAS NEVER TOLD ABOUT THE 2011 TSB FOR EXCESS OIL CONSUMPTION THAT TOYOTA HAD ISSUED. TODAY, JULY 17TH, 2020,I CALLED THE DEALER TO ASK ABOUT THE TSB, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE TSB HAS BEEN OUT FOR 10 YEARS SO I HAD HAD UNTIL 2017 TO QUALIFY. I DO NOT BELIEVE I EVER RECEIVED A LETTER NOTIFYING ME ABOUT THE ISSUE. HAD I RECEIVED THE NOTIFICATION I WOULD BEEN THE FIRST PERSON IN LINE AT THE DEALERSHIP. ALSO, MY STEERING WHEEL FEELS LIKE IT IS LOOSE, IF THE SPEED IS OVER 45 MPH IT FEELS UNSAFE, THE SLIPPERY SENSOR LIGHT COMES ON WHEN I AM TURNING THE WHEEL SLIGHTLY ON A DRY ROAD, AND THERE IS AN EXCESSIVE NOISE INSIDE THE CAR EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS CLOSED. THIS HAPPENS DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING. I AM ABOUT TO DONATE THE CAR SO THAT IT CAN BE USED FOR PARTS. I LOVE THE CAR NOW I KNOW TO CHECK WITH NHTSA WHEN I PURCHASE MY NEXT CAR.
HATCH IS DIFFICULT TO OPEN AND GETS STUCK IF YOU DON'T FULLY PULL THE LATCH FREE. REGARDLESS OF THE DIFFICULTY OPENING AT TIMES, THE HANDLE IS MELTED AND LEAVES A STICKY BLACK "TAR" ON YOUR HAND EVERY TIME YOU OPEN THE HATCH. MY HUSBAND AND I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS OR ARE 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND SINCE PURCHASING VEHICLE A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AGO SHE HAS ALREADY HAD FOUR OR MORE INSTANCES OF HER CAR DYING AND MAKING HER LOSE ALL CONTROL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR GOES INTO NEUTRAL ON ITS OWN AND WILL NOT GO BACK INTO DRIVE OR ANY OTHER GEAR THE CAR BECOMES IMMOBILE WITH NO ABILITY EVEN STEER OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OR SHUT THE CAR OFF OR PUT IT IN PARK ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS COME ON BRAKES BECOME GLOWING RED HOT AND SEVERE ISSUES WITH LIGHTING AND MOISTURE. *TR

THE MAIN COMPUTER BOARD SHORTED OUT CALLED THE DEALERSHIP FOUND OUT IT WAS RECALLED 2007-2016 BUT SEARCHED FOR INFORMATION OR SOMETHING UNABLE TO FIND INFORMATION THE CAR STAYED RUNNING UNABLE TO TURN OFF DASHBOARD SPEED AND TRANSMISSION WAS DARK UNABLE TO PUSH BUTTON TO TURN OFF CAR. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT A SLOW SPEED UNDER 5MPH AND SIMULTANEOUSLY THE BRAKES BECAME VERY HARD, THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND A VERY LONG HIGH PITCHED BEEP CAME ON. IT WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. MY DEALER CHECKED AND THE BRAKE ACTUATOR FAILED AND THE CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE. THE FIX IS OVER $2000. THE CAR HAS ONLY 118,000 MILES.
BRAKES STOPPED WORKING WHILE IN MOTION. DEEMED UNSAFE AND NOT TO BE DRIVEN. NO PRESSURE IN BRAKES. BRAKE ACTUATOR HAS GONE BAD. $1700 PART TO FIX PLUS LABOR.
I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK NAVIGATING THROUGH BUSY TRAFFIC WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM FAILED IN MY VEHICLE. SO BASICALLY MY WHOLE BRAKING SYSTEM FAILED, AND I WAS HAD TO DRIVE MY CAR TO A STOP WHICH WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT SINCE I HAD NO BRAKES. I WAS A DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE IT FAILED DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC. SO, NOW, I AM LEFT WITH A VEHICLE WITH NO BRAKES. IT'S NOT DRIVEABLE BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE.
SOMETIMES WHEN I START MY CAR, THE SPEEDOMETER, FUEL LEVEL AND ODOMETER CLUSTER DISPLAY GOES BLANK. I DO HAVE A SPEEDOMETER APP ON MY PHONE. I HAVE USED TIPS FROM PRIUS OWNERS ABOUT HOW TO GET THE DISPLAY BACK ON. I STILL BELIEVE THIS MAY BE A PROBLEM FOR NORMAL DRIVERS. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN I START THE CAR.
WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY ON MY WAY BACK TO HILO FROM KONA DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT ON MY 2007 PRIUS AND OUT OF NOWHERE I LOST BREAKS FOR A TIME AND IT WAS A TERRIFYING EXP AND I M HAPPY I M STILL ALIVE. BREAKS CAME BACK WITH WARNING SIGNS ON DASHBOARD THAT THERE IS A FAILURE IN THE BREAK SYSTEM, ABS AND OTHER. CALLED HILO TOYOTA DEAL MORE THAN 5 TIMES AND EACH TIME I GIVE THEM THE VIN NUMBER THEY HANGUP ON ME IN A RUDE WAY WITHOUT GIVING ANY EXPLANATION WHY THEY ARE CUTTING THE CALL. FROM THERE WEBSITE I MANAGED TO START A TXT MESSAGE AND ASKED FOR APPOINTMENT TO SEE WHAT'S WRONG AND PAID 170$ AND THE RESULT WHERE THAT MY BREAK SYSTEM HAVE A RECALL ON IT AND MY CAR IS AT 118 000 MILES SO THE RECALL EXPIRED IN 2017 AND THEY ASKED ME 3500$ TO FIX THE BREAK SYSTEM INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. AFTER MANAGING TO CALL TOYOTA MAIN OFFICE THEY STARTED A CASE FOR THIS PROBLEM AND ON MONDAY THEY WILL GIVE A FINAL ANSWER IF THEY WILL CHANGE THE FAILING RECALL BREAK SYSTEM OR NOT. ALSO I MANAGED TO CONTACT TOYOTA HONOLULU AND I KNEW FROM THEM THAT TOYOTA HAWAII IS A DIFFERENT ENTITY FROM TOYOTA MAINLAND AND THAT THE SAFETY RECALLS NEVER EXPIRED AND THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE BREAK SYSTEM INVOLVED IN THE REPORT NO QUESTIONS ASKED. HERE I AM REPORTING THIS TO NHTSA AS TOYOTA IS GAMBLING WITH PEOPLE LIVES WHO STILL DRIVING PRIUS WHICH MIGHT LOSE BREAKS AT ANY TIME AND MIGHT ENDUP IN DEATH RESULT. I HOPE NHTSA WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AND ASK TOYOTA TO CHANGE ALL THOSE DEFECTED BREAK SYSTEM FROM MANUFACTURES BEFORE MORE AMERICAN FAMILIES DIES FROM BREAK FAILURE WHICH WHERE NEVER CHANGED BECAUSE THE DEALER PREFER PROFIT ON SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE.
WELL KNOWN ABS ACCUMULATOR FAILURE, LOUD BEEPING NOISE, CAN'T DRIVE CAR SAFELY, HIGH MILEAGE CAR AND WILL BE REPAIRING IT, MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE PART IS SEVENTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS $1700 WHICH IS A LOT FOR SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS BRAKES AND WITH SUCH A HIGH FAILURE RATE ON ALL OF TOYOTA'S HYBRIDS. THIS PART NEEDS TO BE AVAILABLE FROM 3RD PARTIES SO I AM NOT FORCED TO DEAL WITH JUNK YARD ABS THAT IS JUST AS LIKELY TO FAIL BECAUSE OF A FLAWED DESIGN.
HID LIGHTS GOING OFF WHILE DRIVING. ONE LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY GOING ON AND OFF. TURNING LIGHT SWITCH OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN TURNS THEM BACK ON. HAVE SEEN ONLINE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS PROBEL
OUR DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING OUR 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS TO WORK IN THE DARK IN RUSH HOUR ON THE HIGHWAY, DRIVING STRAIGHT, AT HIGHWAY SPEED, IN LOS ANGELES, AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSTANTLY BLACKED OUT, WITH THE CAR COMPLETELY DEAD AND HALTED. IT COULD NOT EVEN BE SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL! THE CAR STOPPED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. SHE CALLED 911, AND A WRECKER WAS DISPATCHED TO LIFT THE CAR OFF THE FREEWAY. THANKFULLY SHE WAS NOT INJURED OR KILLED! I THEN RESEARCHED THE LIKELY CAUSE AND DIAGNOSED IT EXACTLY. IT WAS THE "HYBRID WATER PUMP" ALSO KNOWN AS THE "INVERTER PUMP," PART #G9020-47031. THAT PART WAS RECALLED IN 2012, NHTSA RECALL # 12V536000. I HAD IT TOWED TO A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALER, NORTH HOLLYWOOD TOYOTA, TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. THAT DEALER LOOKED UP THE VEHICLE'S RECORDS AND SAID THE RECALL HAD BEEN PERFORMED IN 2013. WAS IT REALLY? IF SO, THEN A RECALLED PART THAT CAUSES A COMPLETE, INSTANT BLACKOUT ON A PRIUS ALREADY FAILED AGAIN. THE RECEIPT FOR THE REPAIR IS ATTACHED, INCLUDING THE NHTSA RECALLED PART #. THE REPAIR COST $699.09 + TAX, AND CAUSED AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS INSTANT STOPPAGE OF THE VEHICLE ON A JAM-PACKED HIGHWAY. I E-MAILED TOYOTA USA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO APPEAL THE SITUATION, AND THEY SENT ME A REPLY AND ASKED THAT I CALL THEM. ON THE CALL, THEY CLAIMED THERE IS NO RECOURSE FOR ME TO PURSUE. I'M A 51 YEAR OLD U.S. ARMY OFFICER VETERAN AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED OR KNOWN OF ANYTHING THIS SUSPICIOUS AND DANGEROUS IN THE AUTOMOBILE SPACE. THE ABS BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY IS FAILING ON MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS, CREATING UNPREDICTABLE AND DANGEROUS BRAKING. IT IS A $3,000 REPLACEMENT THAT, UP UNTIL THE END OF 2017, TOYOTA WAS REPLACING AT NO CHARGE, BUT NO LONGER, UNDER A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM, ZG1, ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE. I WENT ON LINE AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR 2007 TOYOTAS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE JUST A VOLUNTARY "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT," BUT A MANDATORY RECALL TO FORCE TOYOTA TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT. THIS DEVICE RUNS ALMOST CONSTANTLY WHEN IT SHOULDN'T, CREATES A DRAG ON THE CAR THAT HAS CUT MPG IN HALF, IS PROBABLY WEARING OUT THE BRAKES PREMATURELY, AND CAUSES DANGEROUSLY SLOW ACCELERATION FROM A STOP THAT HAS RESULTED IN SOME NEAR ACCIDENTS. I PRESUME THE ABS FUNCTION WOULD NOT WORK WHEN CALLED UPON. THE REPAIR COST IS ABOUT HALF THE RETAIL VALUE OF THE CAR, AND IT SEEMS UNFAIR THAT JUST BECAUSE THIS SHOWED UP AFTER THEIR PROGRAM ENDED, I HAVE TO FOOT THE ENTIRE BILL, OR JUNK A CAR THAT IS OTHERWISE IN PERFECT SHAPE. THERE ARE 150K MILES ON THE CAR, LOW FOR A TOYOTA OF THIS AGE. I HAVE ATTACHED THE TOYOTA ZG1 LETTER THAT I FOUND ON LINE. PLEASE CONSIDER AN IMMEDIATE RECALL ON THIS BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AND MAKE TOYOTA FIX IT FOR EVERYONE.
ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS, THE DASH DOES NOT LIGHT UP(SPEED, GEAR SELECTIONS , GAS LEVEL, ETC) WHEN THIS HAPPENS YOU CAN NOT SHUT THE ENGINE OFF OR REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY WHICH ARE BIG SAFETY ITEMS WHEN YOU HAVE TO PARK AS YOU CAN NOT LOCK THE DOORS AND ALL INFORMATION ON THE LARGE DISPLAY DOES NOT WORK OR ANY OF THE DASH DISPLAY SO YOU HAVE NO INDICATION OF SPEED, ENGINE WARNINGS ETC. I PURCHASED MY 2007 PRIUS FROM MY LOCAL COUNTY AND NOW THEY HAVE A 2009 PRIUS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ALL PRIUS SHOULD BE RECALLED BY TOYOTA, REGARDLESS OF AGE AND FIXED A IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS BE A PROBLEM WITH THE PRIUS. THE ESTIMATE I HAVE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM IS APPROXIMATELY $1,200 AND THIS SHOULD BE FIXED BY TOYOTA AS A DEFINITE RECALL SAFETY PROBLEM. IT IS A START, STOP PROBLEM WHEN YOU CAN NOT SHUT OFF THE ENGINE OR REMOVE THE KEY AND WHILE DRIVING NO SPEED INDICATION.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER CAR TO WORK, AN AUDIO WARNING AND LIGHTS ON THE DASH CAME ON INDICATING THAT THE ABS SYSTEM HAD A PROBLEM. SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. SHE STARTED THE CAR AND THE LIGHTS HAD RESET AND NO SOUND. LATER IN THE DAY SHE STARTED HER CAR AND THE SYMPTOMS HAPPENED AGAIN BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS MUSHY. I GOT THE CAR HOME AND LOOKED AT THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKE PADS AND REPLACED THINKING THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. IT DID NOT WORK. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I FOUND WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE, TOYOTA HAD A ITEM CALLED A BRAKE ACTUATOR THAT SEEMS TO FAIL AFTER SOME TIME.AFTER READING SOME FORUMS IT SOUNDED LIKE THERE WERE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. TOYOTA WANTS AROUND $6,000 TO REPLACE THIS UNIT AND IT ISN'T AS EASY AS REPLACING A COUPLE OF BRAKE PADS.
THE DASHBOARD WOULD NOT LIGHT UP EVEN OF THE CAR IS ON AND CAN BE DRIVEN.IT WON'T STOP THE CAR. THE CAR WAS STOPPED AND I JUST STARTED IT BUT THE DASH BOARD WOULD NOT LIGHT UP THE SPEEDOMETER AND GAS LEVEL.
FOR A FEW MONTHS, THE LEFT HAND SIDE FRONT HEADLIGHT HAS GONE OUT, IF I TURN THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN, IT COMES BACK ON. HOWEVER LAST NIGHT, WHILE DRIVING ON A DARK NC HIGHWAY BOTH LIGHTS WENT OUT. THEY CAME BACK ON WHEN I TURNED THE LIGHTS ON AN OFF AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES. IT IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT I SEE MANY OTHER PRIUS OWNERS EXPERIENCE. IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE BOTH LIGHTS HAVE BEEN GOING OUT FOR SOME TIME, SINCE DRIVING ON DARK COUNTRY HIGHWAYS AT 70 MPH IS NOT SOMETHING I REGULARLY DO.
HEADLIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY FAIL. SOMETIMES ONE HEADLIGHT WILL GO OUT AND OTHER TIMES BOTH. SO FAR, IF I DETECT ONE OR BOTH HEADLIGHTS ARE OUT, TURNING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH OFF AND BACK ON WILL CORRECT THE PROBLEM. DEPENDING ON STREET LIGHTING, I AM NOT ALWAYS ABLE TO DETECT IF THE HEADLIGHTS ARE OFF UNTIL ANOTHER CAR FLASHES TO LET ME KNOW OR I ENTER A DARK ROADWAY WHERE IT BECOMES OBVIOUS.
THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE EXTENSION SHAFT IN THIS CAR WAS RECALLED AND REPLACED IN 2015. THIS PART WAS NOTICED TO BE FAILING AGAIN BY THE MECHANIC WHILE IN FOR AN UNRELATED ISSUE. THE MECHANIC DEEMED THE CAR TO BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS IF THIS PART FAILED WHILE DRIVING I WOULD HAVE BEEN WITHOUT ANY STEERING. BOTH THE DEALER AND I FEEL THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS, WHICH THEY HAVE DECLINED, BUT EQUALLY AS IMPORTANT THAT ALL THE OTHER CARS INVOLVED IN THIS RECALL SHOULD BE CHECKED. THERE IS ALSO NO WARNING LIGHT OR ANY INDICATION FOR THE DRIVER THAT THEY MAY BE UNSAFE. THE RECALL NOTICE WOULD NOT SCAN BUT TOYOTA REFERENCE NUMBER IS BELOW. DASHBOARD TROUBLES SHUT OFF AND DONT SHOW DASHIGHT NOTHING
STEERING WHEEL DEFROSTER CONTROL PANEL STOPPED WORKING, ALL THE REST OF THE CONTROLS ARE OPERATIONAL EXCEPT THE DEFROSTER PORTION. SEEMS THE CLOCKSPRING IS MALFUNCTIONING. AS THE SAME PART IS PROVIDING SIGNAL FOR ALL THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS AND POSSIBLY THE AIRBAG, THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN TO ME.
I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (HEARTLAND TOYOTA) THAT MY ANTI-LOCKING BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) PUMP ACTUATOR IS FAILING ON MY 2007 PRIUS WITH ONLY 87,000 MILES. THE COST TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM IS $3500-$4000. APPARENTLY TOYOTA CAME OUT WITH AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO COVER THIS PROBLEM A WHILE BACK BUT LIMITED IT TO SITUATIONS OCCURRING PRIOR TO 12/31/2017. I CONTACTED TOYOTA "CUSTOMER CARE" IN AN EFFORT TO FIND OUT WHAT IS MAGICAL ABOUT THE 12/31/2017 END DATE. THEY HAD NO GOOD ANSWER. I'M TOLD THE BRAKES COULD FAIL AT ANY TIME WITH NO WARNING. CURRENTLY THERE IS JUST AN UNUSUAL PRESSURE RELEASE SOUND WHEN BRAKING AND ACCELERATING. NO DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS ARE LIT.
SIMILAR TO THIS COMPLAINT (NHTSA ID NUMBER:11268053) I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING TO KEEP BOTH OF MY HEADLIGHTS WORKING FOR OVER A YEAR NOW. I HAVE TRIED REPLACING THE LIGHTBULBS AND THE BALLASTS WITHOUT SUCCESS. BOTH THE REGULAR LIGHTS AND THE HIGH BEAMS TURN OFF ABOUT EVERY COUPLE OF MINUTES AND SOMETIMES FASTER. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE, AT TIMES, DUE TO THE INFLEXIBILITY OF THE RUBBER I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE TRUNK AND, THUS, ACCESS THE SPARE, ANY OF MY REPAIR TOOLS, OUR EARTHQUAKE KIT, FLARES, JUMPERS, ETC. THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE INTERNAL METHOD FOR OPENING THE HATCHBACK/TRUNK. TOYOTA NEEDS A RECALL OF THIS DEFECTIVE PART AS THE COST TO REPAIR IT IS EXORBITANT, QUOTED TO ME AS $352.

CAR ROLLS AWAY WHEN PLACED IN PARK AND IGNITION OFF. NOTICED MULTIPLE TIMES. VIDEO AS WELL. VEHICLE WAS PARKED, IGNITION OFF AND KEY ARE OUT. I LOCKED AND CAR, CAME BACK TO LOAD IT AND LEANED AGAINST THE CAR. THE CR JUST STARTED TO ROLL DOWN THE STREET. I RECORDED VIDEO. THEN I TURNED ON THE CAR, THE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGES PROPERLY.
WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, THE HEADLIGHTS WILL RANDOMLY TURN OFF. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND SCARY. PLEASE HELP!
BRAKE AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AFTER I REPLACED THE 12V BATTERY. I NOTICED THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE-EFFECT WAS STRONGER AND IT RESULTED IN THE CAR PULLING SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO TESTED THE CODES AND REPLACED THE ABS RELAY. THAT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND HE RECOMMENDED TOYOTA SERVICE. I TALKED WITH A TOYOTA SERVICE REP WHO TOLD ME THERE WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH SOME PRIUS BRAKES AND ASKED THAT I GIVE HIM THE VIN. HE SAID THERE HAD BEEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO REPLACE THE ABS BRAKE CONTROLLER ASSEMBLY BUT IT HAD EXPIRED SOME TIME AGO. HE SAID THE COST TO FIX THIS WOULD APPROXIMATE $3500. OTHERWISE THE CAR IS IN GOOD SHAPE AND I WOULD EXPECT THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT ANOTHER 100,000 MILES OR PERHAPS MUCH MORE. A TYPICAL AMERICAN-MADE CAR WITH AN ABS FAILURE WILL STILL BRAKE NORMALLY - JUST NOT HAVE THE ABS FEATURE. THE PRIUS WILL NOT! THE TOYOTA SERVICE REP SAID IT SHOULDN'T BE DRIVEN AS IT IS TOO DANGEROUS AND MY EXPERIENCE CONFIRMS THE MALFUNCTION.

THE PARAMEDICS TRANSPORTED THE CONTACT TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL WHERE SHE SUFFERED FROM INJURIES TO HER CHEST AND BACK. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SANSONE TOYOTA (90-100 US-1, AVENEL, NJ 07001, (732) 815-0500) WHERE THE BRAKES WERE SERVICED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOW YARD AND DEEMED DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND SENT AN INVESTIGATOR TO CHECK THE VEHICLE'S BLACK BOX. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO FAILURES FOUND ON THE BLACK BOX AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW ON PUBLIC FORUMS, IT APPEARS THE BULB IS PERFECTLY FINE AND THERE'S SOME TYPE OF ELECTRICAL ISSUE/CONNECTION PROBLEM THAT CAUSES PROBLEMS WITH THE BULB. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS ON AND IN-MOTION ON ANY STREET.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AUTONATION TOYOTA PINELLAS PARK (727-231-1423, LOCATED AT 8501 US HIGHWAY 19 NORTH, PINELLAS PARK, FL 33781) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS AN UNKNOWN RECALL IN 2017. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,000.

ABS ACCUATOR FAILURE. THIS IS A VERY KNOWN COMMON FAILURE FROM TOYOTA . THEY WILL NOT COVER IT. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. IT HAS TO DO WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM OF MY CAR.

I CAN'T AFFORD THIS SO MY MECHANIC INSTALLED A USED PART AND STILL THE ABS ALARM ON! THIS PART HAS A RECALL THAT EXPIRED IN JAN 2018. CAN TOYOTA DO THIS FOR ME? THE CAR CAN STILL BE DRIVEN FOR A LONG TIME. THIS PART IS SUPPOSED TO LIVE MUCH MORE THAN 115K MILES AND PROBABLY MORE THAN 300K MILES.
