PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT GOES OUT AND ONLY TURNS BACK ON WHEN I TOGGLE LIGHT SWITCH OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN. THIS OCCURS MULTIPLE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND IT CAUSES DIFFICULTY VISUALIZING TRAFFIC SIGNS ON THE RIGHT SIDE AT NIGHT. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM AS OF YET. I'M HOPING TO SEE A SAFETY RECALL OF THE PROBLEM CONSIDERING THE QUANTITY OF PRIUS OWNERS AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HIGH INTENSITY (HID) HEADLIGHTS WOULD BECOME INOPERABLE INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A WIRE DEFECT THAT CAUSED THE SHORTAGE IN THE HEADLIGHTS. THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT WAS REPLACED FOR $400 AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. LESS THAN SIX MONTHS LATER, THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WAS REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE ENTIRE LIGHTING ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED FOR $350 AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS LESS THAN 48,000. UPDATED 04-17-09 UPDATED 04/21/09.*JB
MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS WAS PURCHASED NEW, AND WITHIN A YEAR, I BEGAN EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH MY HID HEADLIGHTS. MY DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT WOULD FLICKER, THEN GO OUT -- ONLY TO TURN BACK ON IF I COMPLETELY TURNED THE LIGHTS OFF & BACK ON AGAIN. TOYOTA REPLACED THAT ONE AFTER I COMPLAINED THAT I HAD ONLY HAD MY CAR A YEAR, AND THESE BULBS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE "LONG-LASTING." NOW, MY PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING. THIS TIME, TOYOTA SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT PAY TO REPLACE THE SECOND HEADLIGHT, AND IT WOULD COST ALMOST $500 -- FOR ONE LIGHT! ONE MONTH LATER, AFTER THE 2ND HEADLIGHT BEGAN WORKING INTERMITTENTLY, NOW MY DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT HAS STOPPED WORKING AS WELL. I HAVE NEVER HAD SO MANY LIGHTS GO OUT ON A CAR THAT I HAVE DRIVEN EVER -- ESPECIALLY ONE THAT IS JUST NOW 2 YEARS OLD!! I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED, AND FEEL THAT MY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ON THE AUTO IS COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE AND UNSAFE. *TR
TO:NHTSA.WEBMASTER@DOT.GOV SUBJECT:TOYOTA PRIUS 2007 MODEL COMMENTS: ALTHOUGH MY DEALER HAS RUN A COMPLETE BATTERY OF COMPUTER TESTS, NO EXPLANATION IS APPARENT FOR THE VEHICLE ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN AT HIGH SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE AND IT IS TERRIFYING. THE TWO INSTANCES WERE A COUPLE OF MONTHS APART. BOTH TIMES, I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD DRIVEN 10-20 MILES WITHOUT A PROBLEM. ONCE THE GAS PEDAL WAS PHYSICALLY JOLTED UP, THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED. WHEN IT IS OCCURRING, THE BRAKES DO NOT SLOW IT DOWN BY MORE THAN 3-4 MPH. MY DEALER IS A-1 TOYOTA IN NEW HAVEN. *TR
I HAVE AN INTERMITTENT HEADLIGHT PROBLEM. THIS HAS CAUSED ME TO BE PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE FOR A FAULTY HEADLIGHT. WHEN I TURN THE POWER OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN, THE HEADLIGHT USUALLY COMES BACK ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THE CAR. DEALERSHIP SAYS IT'S NOT A PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA OR THE DEALERSHIP IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BECAUSE IT ISN'T A CONSISTENT PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. *TR
RIGHT HEADLIGHT WILL NOT STAY LIT. GOES ON AN OFF RANDOMLY. TURNING OFF THE SWITCH AND BACK ON WILL TURN THE LIGHT ON FOR A RANDOM AMOUNT OF TIME. NOTHING DONE YET TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA IMPLIES THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST TO GET IT FIXED. MANY REPORTS ON WEB INDICATE THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2008 PRIUS. IT MAY BE AN OVER HEATING OF THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS THE LIGHTS AND TYPICALLY COST $1500 TO $2000 TO GET IT FIXED. LAST NIGHT IT WAS 46% AND IT STAYED LIT FOR THE 27 MILE TRIP HOME FROM WORK. SUMMER MONTHS IT FADES OUT AFTER THE FIRST 5 MINUTES OF DRIVING. *TR
SIMILAR TO THE REPORTED BRAKING INCIDENTS WITH THE 2010 PRIUS, MY 2007 PRIUS LOSES BRAKING RESISTANCE WHEN DRIVING OVER A ROUGH SURFACE SUCH AS POT HOLES. WHEN I BRAKE OVER POT HOLES, THE YELLOW WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP (SYMBOL IS A CAR OVER WAVY TIRE TRACKS), AND THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER, EVEN WHEN FULLY DEPRESSED. BRAKING WORKS ONCE I AM OVER THE ROUGH SURFACE, BUT THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY, MANY TIMES. ALTHOUGH LACK OF BRAKING HAS NOT LED TO AN ACCIDENT IN MY CAR, IT IS A VERY FRIGHTENING SITUATION TO BE IN. *TR
HEADLIGHTS GO OUT INTERMITTENTLY AND OUT REMAIN UNLIT. THIS HAS OCCURRED FOUR TIMES IN A YEAR AND A HALF. AT ONE POINT IN TIME BOTH LAMPS WENT OUT AT THE SAME TIME. THE DEALER MAINTAINS THAT THIS IS NOT AN ON GOING ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. EACH TIME I HAVE GONE IN FOR REPAIR THE DEALER MAINTAINS THAT THE PROBLEM IS EITHER THAT THE BULB IS, LOOSE, BURNT, OR DEFECTIVE. THESE BULBS ARE IN EXCESS OF $150.00 EACH. *TR
I HAVE A TOYOTA PRIUS 2007 THAT HAS TRAC ( TRACTION CONTROL) . IT HAS CAUSED ME TO SLIDE OFF THE ROAD AND LOSE CONTROL ON ANY SLICK SURFACE. I HAVE A PATIENT WHO JUST TOTALED HER PRIUS ON AN ICY ROAD AND SHE HAD BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH LOSS OF TRACTION DUE TO TRAC. *TR
CAR FAILED TO STOP ON HILL IN SNOWY DAY -- ANTILOCK BRAKES FROZE. BRAKES ALSO WERE WEAK IN SNOW IN GENERAL. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER AND ASKED FOR SNOW TIRES. THEY SAID IT WOULDN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE, AND THAT PRIUSES WERE JUST BAD IN THE SNOW. I TRADED THE CAR IN FOR A CAMRY HYBRID IN THE SPRING TO AVOID GOING THROUGH ANOTHER WINTER WITH IT. *TR
HEADLAMP BULBS BURN OUT VERY QUICKLY LEADING TO REPEATED CHANGE OF THE BULBS AT $250 A PIECE. *TR
I OWN A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS, AND SINCE I HAVE HAD THE CAR I HAVE CONTINUOUS ISSUES WITH MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY WHILE TRAVELING OVER UNEVEN ROAD SURFACES, POTHOLES AND BUMPS, SO I DON'T THINK IT'S JUST AN ISSUE WITH THE 2010 MODELS. I ASKED MY DEALER, OLATHE TOYOTA IN OLATHE, KS, ABOUT IT LAST YEAR AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS JUST PART OF THE AUTO-CORRECT SYSTEM THAT'S AN ADVANCE FEATURE INSTALLED IN THE CAR AND FOR ME NOT TO WORRY... THAT WAS HOW IT WAS SUPPOSE TO WORK THEY SAID. HOWEVER, YOU MOMENTARILY LOSE CONTROL OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND SOMETIMES THE STEERING EVEN AUTO CORRECTS ITSELF BUT NOT ALWAYS IN THE RIGHT WAY...I HAVE HAD SEVERAL INSTANCES OF IT HAPPENING AND CORRECTING IN A WAY WHERE IT ALMOST CAUSED ME TO WRECK. IT'S SO NERVE RACKING THAT I TRY AND AVOID BUMPS OR POTHOLES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. TO ADD TO MY CONFUSION THOUGH, I RECEIVED A FLOOR-MAT RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA BACK IN NOVEMBER 2009 BUT NEVER RECEIVED ONE ABOUT A RECALL ON THE PRIUS GAS-PEDAL. BUT AREN'T THE FLOOR-MATS WHAT TOYOTA ORIGINALLY SAID WAS WRONG WITH THE SYSTEMS BEFORE THEY ADMITTED TO THE GAS PEDAL IN THE OTHER MODELS, SO WHY DIDN'T I RECEIVE A GAS PEDAL RECALL LETTER AS A 2007 PRIUS OWNER, IF IT REALLY WASN'T THE FLOOR-MATS THAT THEY RECALLED? NEEDLESS TO SAY, I'M A CONFUSED 2007 PRIUS OWNER WITH HUGE CONCERNS OVER THE SAFETY OF MY CAR THAT I STILL OWE MONEY ON. SHOULD I TALK TO MY DEALER AGAIN ABOUT THE BRAKING/AUTO-CORRECT SYSTEM/GAS PEDAL ISSUES ? TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AT 2-3 MPH, THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT BROADSIDED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. TOYOTA PRIUS 2007 HEADLIGHT WORKS INTERMITTENTLY. *TR
WE OWN A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS 4-D HYBRID HATCHBACK. FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS THE HEADLIGHTS ON THE CAR TURN OFF RANDOMLY AFTER THE CAR IS STARTED. SOMETIMES IT IS ONE LIGHT OR THE OTHER AND SOMETIMES IT IS BOTH. THIS HAPPENS WHETHER ON DIM OR BRIGHT. THE CORRECTION IS TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON, WHICH RESOLVES THE ISSUE FOR A LITTLE WHILE. ON A ONE AND HALF HOUR DRIVE (DAILY COMMUTE) THIS TAKES PLACE 3-4 TIMES. THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE LIGHT FAILURE IS EITHER LIMITED VISIBILITY ON THE SIDE THAT IS OUT OR LOSS OF VISIBILITY IF BOTH LIGHTS GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME. THE TOYOTA DEALER WILL ONLY REPLACE THEM IF I PAY FOR THE REPAIR OF THEIR DEFECT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH THE ELECTRONIC GEAR SHIFT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL GEAR AND THEN INTO REVERSE AND HE HAD SHIFT INTO DRIVE. HE STATED THAT OCCASIONALLY HE DID NOT NOTICE THAT THE GEAR SHIFTED INTO REVERSE UNTIL HE WAS BACKING INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE DEALER MADE TWO ATTEMPTS TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED SINCE THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
HEADLIGHTS (HID) BOTH WORK INTERMITTENTLY EVERYDAY SINCE CAR WAS ONE YEAR OLD. *TR
I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS THAT HAS THE HID LIGHTS. THE LIGHTS SOMETIMES GO OUT WHEN DRIVING, EITHER THE RIGHT OR LEFT. THIS HAD STARTED ONCE THE CAR ROLLED OVER 36000 MILES (AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED) I CANNOT AFFORD TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WHICH I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ESPECIALLY WHEN THE DEALER I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM SAYS IT WILL BE AROUND A $1300 REPAIR. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM IF THE LIGHT SOMETIMES TURNS OFF BUT THEN WORKS LATER. I DID NOT CARE IF THE CAR I BOUGHT HAD THE HID LIGHTS OR NOT. THE CAR ON THE LOT HAD THE HID LIGHTS AND IT WAS GOING TO COST MORE TO DOWNGRADE THE LIGHTS AND HAVE ANOTHER CAR BROUGHT IN. HAD I KNOWN I WOULD HAVE THIS KIND OF PROBLEM I WOULD HAVE PAID TO HAVE THE STANDARD LIGHTS. *TR

CONSUMER STATES THAT THE HEADLIGHTS BEGIN TO FLICKER OR HAVE INTERMITTENT FAILURE. *KB THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE PARTS WOULD BE FREE OF CHARGE, BUT HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LABOR. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. HE STATED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO START THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE BATTERY DIED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE SAT FOR MORE THAN TEN DAYS. THE DEALER CHARGED THE BATTERY AND THERE HAD BEEN NO FURTHER OCCURRENCES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE BATTERY CABLES SHOULD BE DISCONNECTED WHEN THE VEHICLE SITS FOR 7-10 DAYS IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE REMEDY WAS UNSAFE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 5,800.
I HAVE A TOYOTA PRIUS 2007. I HAVE 2 SAFETY ISSUES THAT I HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER ABOUT BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIX SO THEY IGNORED MY CONCERNS AFTER REALIZING THEY COULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. FIRST PROBLEM IS THE HEAD LIGHTS. WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT THE HIGH BEAMS DO NOT SHINE ON THE ROAD BUT SHINE INTO THE TREES. THEY SAY THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENTS FOR IT. ALSO PEOPLE THINK I AM SHINING MY HIGH BEAMS AT THEM WHEN I AM NOT. THEY ARE JUST TOO HIGH....ALSO THE HEADLIGHTS DO NO ILLUMINATE THE SIDES OF THE CAR AND ROAD SO WHEN MAKING TURNS AT NIGHT YOU CANNOT SEE WHERE YOU ARE TURNING. I HAVE TO APPROACH TURNS VERY VERY SLOWLY BECAUSE I CANNOT SEE THE ROADS WHEN TURNING. EVERYONE THAT DRIVES MY CAR COMPLAINS ABOUT THIS NOTICEABLE PROBLEM HOWEVER TOYOTA WONT ADDRESS IT BECAUSE THEY SAY THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT. 2ND PROBLEM THEIR SLIP DIFFERENTIAL. WHETHER THERE IS SNOW ON THE GROUND OR NOT WHEN THE TIRES START TO SLIP THEY LOOSE ALL POWER TO THE WHEELS. I HAVE BEEN IN INTERSECTIONS WHEN THIS HAS OCCURRED AND WAS ALMOST HIT. EVEN WHEN TRYING TO DRIVE OVER THE STOP IN THE CAR WASH...SOMETIMES I AM UNABLE TO POWER OVER THE BUMP. I GET STUCK OFTEN. AGAIN TOYOTA SAYS THIS IS A NORMAL FUNCTION OF THE CAR. NOT SOMETHING I WOULD EXPECT FROM A $24,000 CAR. OUR VALUES HAVE PLUMMETED AND THERE IS NO RECOURSE FOR IT. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH AT NIGHT, ONE OF THE FRONT HEADLIGHTS WOULD SUDDENLY SHUT OFF AND OCCASIONALLY BOTH OF THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD SHUT OFF WHICH MADE IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. THE CONTACT HAD TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTART IT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE IS FAMILIAR WITH NHTSA, PE09019, EXTERIOR LIGHTING, HEADLIGHTS INVESTIGATION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50,000.
THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2007 PRIUS KEEP GOING OFF. ONE WAS REPLACED DURING WARRANTY PERIOD. THE CAR WAS LESS THAN A YEAR OLD. THE OTHER WENT OUT 4 MONTHS LATER, LESS THAN 18 MONTHS OLD AND WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. LIGHTS THAT LAST THAN 18 MONTHS ARE DEFECTIVE. I HAVE BEEN REPEATEDLY APPROACHED BY OTHER PRIUS OWNERS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS. *TR
2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. IN THE 3 YEARS SINCE WE'VE OWNED THE CAR, WE HAVE NOTED ABOUT 10 TO 15 TIMES THAT THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD WHEN WE HAVE APPLIED THE BRAKES WHILE GOING OVER A BUMP. IT IS ALWAYS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL BEING ACTIVATED. IT HAS NEVER BEEN AT HIGH SPEED, BUT WE HAVE FELT THAT WE ARE NOT ABLE TO BREAK FOR A SECOND OR TWO. AFTER LEARNING OF PROBLEMS WITH OTHER PRIUS MODELS, WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH OUR VEHICLE. WE ARE CONTACTING OUR DEALER TO SEE IF THERE IS A FIX AVAILABLE. WE HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF THIS ISSUE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING OVER ANY POTHOLES IN THE ROAD AT SPEEDS OF OVER 10 MPH, THE TRACTION WARNING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE ALSO MADE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THEY WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CONTACT CONFIRMED THAT THE BRAKES FELT AS IF THEY WERE "LOCKING." THE MANUFACTURER AND A LOCAL DEALER WERE CONTACTED, BOTH OF WHICH WERE NOT WILLING TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE HEADLIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY FAILED TO OPERATE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BULBS IN BOTH HEADLIGHTS. THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNDER 1,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,400. UPDATED 03/04/10. *LJ UPDATED 05/10/10
2007 TOYOTA PRIUS - BRAKES IF DRIVING OVER A POT HOLE, BUMP, OR ANY OTHER NON-FLAT SURFACE, THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK, THE CAR THRUSTS FORWARD, & THE "ABS" LIGHT FLASHES. THIS IS LIKELY THE CAUSE OF AN ACCIDENT I HAD SLIPPING OFF THE ROAD APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. *TR
RANDOM, INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF EITHER HID HEADLAMP. STARTED AROUND 48,000 MILES. TURNING THE HEADLAMP SWITCH OFF AND ON AGAIN REIGNITES THE FAILED LIGHT, UNTIL THE NEXT RANDOM FAILURE. THE DEALER IS REPLACING THE COMPUTER(S) THAT CONTROL THE LIGHTS. THEY WANT TO REPLACE THE LAMPS, BUT THEY COST $400, AND ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA PRIUS UP MY LONG AND FAIRLY STEEP DRIVEWAY OVER ABOUT AN INCH OF SNOW WHEN THE POWER SUDDENLY KICKED OUT BECAUSE OF "THE TRAC" SYSTEM AND I SLID BACKWARDS INTO A TREE. IT HAPPENED A SECOND TIME WITH JUST A SMALL DUSTING OF SNOW. I GUIDED IT INTO THE MOUNTAIN BUT DAMAGED THE EXHAUST SYSTEM RUNNING OVER A ROCK. I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY PREVIOUS CAR WHICH WAS A SATURN SEDAN. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 30 TIMES SINCE WE BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW. SOMETIMES YOU CAN JUST GO OUT AND BANG ON THE HEADLIGHT AREA AND IT COMES ON, AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T AND YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE BULB. THE REAR HATCH IS POORLY DESIGNED WITH NO INDOOR RELEASE. I KEEP INJURING MY HAND AND NECK TO GET IT OPEN, OFTEN HAVING TO TAKE PAIN PILLS, GET THERAPY THE NEXT DAY AFTER STRAINING MY NECK TRYING TO LIFT UP ON THE TINY LITTLE GRIP AREA WITH MY HAND. THE LATCH WILL NOT RELEASE ON THE FIRST TRY AND WHEN THE TEMPS ARE BELOW FREEZING I OFTEN CANNOT GET IT TO OPEN AT ALL. HOW IS ONE SUPPOSED TO GET A SPARE TIRE OUT? WHEN IS IT ZERO DEGREES OUT ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THEIR REAR DOOR OPEN WITHOUT TAKING OFF ONE'S GLOVE. THIS HATCH WILL NEVER OPERATE WITH A GLOVED HAND ATTEMPTING TO OPEN IT. IT IS ALSO NOT SAFE TO HAVE TO FUMBLE AROUND IN PARKING LOTS ATTEMPTING TO SQUEEZE BETWEEN PARKING PLACES TO LOAD ITEMS PURCHASED WHEN ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO EASILY DEPOSIT ITEMS IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED BY TOYOTA. THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE UNLESS THE CAR WOULD JUST HAPPEN TO EXPERIENCE THE BEHAVIOR DURING A TEST DRIVE. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT SINCE THE 2010 RECALL THE DEALERSHIP WAS BEING INUNDATED WITH HYPOCHONDRIAC OWNER'S REPORTING IMAGINED PROBLEMS. I THINK THOSE OWNER'S ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE LIKE ME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,000.

I BOUGHT A NEW PRIUS 2007 IN DECEMBER 2006 FROM LIBERTY TOYOTA IN NEW JERSEY. THE CAR IS GARAGED, SERVICED REGULARLY, AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP SOMETIMES. WE COMPLAINED ABOUT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AT EVERY SERVICE, AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO GET AN ERROR CODE, AND HENCE COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND CORRECT IT. UNLESS TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM, AND CODES THE SYSTEM FOR SUCH ERRORS, OF COURSE THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT GET A CODE. I ALSO POINTED OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT WE KNEW SOMEONE WHO HAD AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE HER STEERING IN HER PRIUS 2006 LOCKED-UP AND THAT THE 2006 PRIUS HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR FAULTY AIR BAGS (RECALL ID FROM NHTSA: 06V096000) AND ELECTRIC STEERING POWER ASSIST SYSTEM (RECALL ID FROM NHTSA: 06V188000). WE WERE THEN TOLD THAT THE 2007 MODEL COULD NOT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE 2006 MODEL BECAUSE TOYOTA WOULD HAVE FIXED IT. THE RECALL ON 2006 MODEL STEERING WAS MADE ON MAY 31, 2006. IT WAS MUCH TOO LATE FOR THE 2007 MODELS. THEY WERE ALREADY SHIPPED OUT OF JAPAN. FRUSTRATED BY THE UNRESPONSIVENESS OF THE DEALERSHIP, I CALLED TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE NUMBER AND I WAS TOLD BY AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE THAT I SHOULD CALL THE DEALERSHIP. IF I WANTED TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP, I WOULD NOT BE CALLING TOYOTA. I THEN SENT AN EMAIL COMPLAINING, NOW OVER A YEAR AGO, THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE, BUT NEVER HEARD FROM TOYOTA. . EVER SINCE THE STEERING PROBLEMS SURFACED, WE HAVE STOPPED USING THE CAR EXCEPT FOR VERY SHORT RUNS SO THAT THE BATTERY GETS RECHARGED. WHEN THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM (TRAC) ENGAGES ON THESE ROAD SURFACES, I LOSE THE ABILITY TO BRAKE AND ALSO LOSE POWER TO THE ENGINE SIMULTANEOUSLY. I HAVE HAD FOUR (4) NEAR-ACCIDENTS DUE TO THIS SAFETY PROBLEM. 1.SNOW COVERED (1 INCH OF SNOW) GOING DOWNHILL (SLIGHT HILL)- LOST BRAKES AFTER TRAC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ENGAGED WAS UNABLE TO STOP CAR - WENT THROUGH STOP SIGN. CAR WENT ONTO BUSY HIGHWAY (50 MPH ZONE) AND WOULD NOT STOP. LUCKILY NO CARS WERE COMING AND I AVOIDED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. 2. SNOW COVERED (1 INCH OF SNOW) GOING DOWNHILL - LOST BRAKES AFTER TRAC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ENGAGED AND ALMOST CRASHED INTO CARS THAT WERE SLOWING DOWN AHEAD OF ME. 3. SNOW COVERED (1 INCH OF SNOW) GOING UPHILL - TRAC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ENGAGED AND I LOST ALL ENGINE POWER AS I WAS TURNING LEFT UP A STEEP HILL. I ALMOST CRASHED INTO LARGE ROCKS AT THE ROADSIDE. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID A CRASH. 4. SNOW COVERED (1 INCH OF SNOW) DRIVING ON FLAT ROAD SURFACE. I TURNED OFF OF SNOW COVERED ROAD INTO A PARKING LOT AREA. TRAC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ENGAGED AND I LOST THE ABILITY TO BRAKE. MY CAR WENT AT LEAST 15 FEET IN THE PARKING LOT AREA BEFORE STOPPING. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO PARKED CARS THERE AND I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT. A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH TRAC AND LOSS OF ENGINE POWER ALSO OCCURS ON THE HILLY ROAD LEADING UP TO MY HOUSE. WHEN THE ROAD IS SNOW COVERED (1 INCH OF SNOW) OR ICY THE TRAC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ENGAGES AND I LOSE ALL POWER TO THE ENGINE. IT MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET MY CAR UP THE HILL DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER WHEN TRAC ENGAGES! *TR
