WHEN I USE THE AUTOMATIC LOCK OPENER AND UNLOCK THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR OR CLICK TWICE TO UNLOCK ALL DOORS IN THE VEHICLE, WITHIN A MINUTE, AUTOMATICALLY LOCKS ALL DOORS AGAIN. KNOWING THAT I COULD EASILY GET LOCKED OUT, I CALLED A TOYOTA SALESPERSON TO ASK WHY IT WAS HAPPENING OR WHAT I COULD DO TO FIX IT. HE DIDN'T KNOW AND SUGGESTED BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE. OUT OF TOWN THIS PAST SATURDAY EVENING, I WAS LOADING THE BACK OF MY VEHICLE AND SET MY KEYS DOWN INSIDE. WHEN I HEARD THE CLICKING NOISE OF ALL THE LOCKS LOCKING, I REMINDED MYSELF TO GET THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE. A MOMENT LATER, I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL, AND DISTRACTED, SHUT THE BACK DOOR. EVEN THOUGH I HAD UNLOCKED ALL DOORS MOMENTS AGO, THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY RE-LOCKED ALL DOORS EVEN WITH THE BACK DOOR OPEN. I CALLED TOYOTA'S ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. TO MY SURPRISE, I WAS TOLD THAT LOCKOUTS ARE NOT A COVERED SERVICE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE AUGUST 7TH. AT FIRST, THE SERVICE ADVISOR AGREED THAT THE LOCKS SHOULD NOT BE WORKING THE WAY THEY ARE AND SAID THAT HE WOULD GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. AFTER WAITING TWO HOURS, HE SAID THAT THE LOCKS ARE WORKING CORRECTLY, AND THE WAY THEY WERE DESIGNED TO WORK. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN I WAS LOCKED OUT, I WAS CLOSE TO HAVING PUT A TWO YEAR OLD IN THE VEHICLE WITH THE TEMPERATURE NEAR 100 DEGREES. THE ONLY TIME I WANT THE LOCKS TO LOCK AUTOMATICALLY IS AFTER I'VE STARTED THE VEHICLE AND AM DRIVING. THIS IS NOT A SAFETY FEATURE INCLUDED WITH THE RAV 4. I WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE DEALER RESPONSE, AND I WOULD LIKE THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED. IF THE LOCKS TRULY ARE DESIGNED TO LOCK AUTOMATICALLY WITHIN 30 SECONDS TO ONE MINUTE, WHETHER A DOOR IS OPEN OR NOT, I WOULD LIKE TOYOTA TO PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION OF THE BENEFIT OF THIS DESIGN. GET A CLUNKING IN STEERING,, TOOK IT TO DEALER BAD INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT.. THEY HAVE A TSB ON IT,, BUT WONT FIX DUE TO IT CURRENTLY BEING OUT OF WARRANTY, AM CONCERNED ABOUT STEERING ISSUES AND CAUSING A ACCIDENT. TOYOTA HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND WONT RECALL,, HAS TO THINK STEERING PROBS CAN BE A MAJOR RISK HAZARD,, SINCE THEY KNEW ABOUT IT IN 2008 READ FORUMS.. AND SEEMS TO BE A MAJOR WIDESPREAD ISSUE NOTJUST MINE..WILL IT TAKE SOMEONE GETTING KILLED BEFORE THIS IS BROUGHT TO LIGHT? *TR
CLUNKING NOISE IN STEERING WHEEL WHEN TURNING RIGHT AT SLOW SPEEDS MOSTLY. SOMETIMES WHEN TURNING LEFT. CLUNKS 2 OR 3 TIMES ON THE TURN ,WHILE MAKING THE RIGHT TURN MOSTLY..IT DOES THIS ALL THE TIME NOW .I TOOK MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALER A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO AND HAD A MECHANIC RIDE WITH ME .. I COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM MORE THEN A COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT THE MECHANIC COULDN'T HEAR IT. HE SAID TO BRING IT BACK IF IT CONTINUES. TOYOTA HAS NO BULLETINS ON THIS PROBLEM FOR THE RAV4, HOWEVER THEY HAVE SERVICE BULLETINS ON THE PRIUS AND THE HIGHLANDER MODELS ON THIS SAME PROBLEM.. I MENTIONED THIS TO THE DEALER, HE SAID THEY WEREN'T RELATED?? THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST. *JB
WATER LEAKING IN ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AND PASSENGER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. BECAUSE INTERIOR OF CAR IS BLACK DID NOT NOTICE LEAK UNTIL MOLD AND MILDEW STARTED TO FORM AND CAUSE ORDER IN THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE OCTOBER OF 2007. MOST RECENTLY DID NOT NOTICE LEAK UNTIL FOOT SLIPPED OFF OF BRAKE FROM SOLE OF SHOE BEING WET. MY CONCERN IS THE POSSIBLE MOLD AND MILDEW AND FOOT SLIPPING OFF OF BRAKE OR GAS PEDDLE FROM SOLE OF SHOE BEING WET. THE CAR HAS BEEN IN FOR SERVICE FOR THIS ISSUE APPROXIMATELY 4 TIMES WITH NO PERMANENT SOLUTION BEING REACHED. TOYOTA 800 CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT CONTACTED REGARDING PROBLEM AND WAS ISSUED A CASE NUMBER (200806260919). I WAS CONTACTED BY CASE WORKER TOLD THAT THIS WAS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE BECAUSE LEAVES WERE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. BUT ON THE SERVICE RECORD STATES THAT NO CAUSE COULD BE DETERMINED AND THAT THEY CLEANED OFF CONDENSATION DISCHARGE TUBE AND ORDERED THE CAR DETAILED TO REMOVE ODOR, WHICH WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL. *TR
I BOUGHT A NEW 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 V6 SPORT. AFTER A YEAR I GOT A CLUNKING NOISE FROM THE STEERING SHAFT WHEN I WAS TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT AT LOW SPEED. I HAD AROUND 15,000 MILES. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME AFTER THE CHECK UP THAT IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE STEERING SYSTEM. AFTER A YEAR MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR WAS SURPRISED BY THE NOISE. SHE HAD A NISSAN QUEST FOR 15 YEARS AND NEVER EXPERIENCED SUCH A BAD RIDE AT LOW SPEED. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF ABOUT $1500 TO FIX IT. IS OUT OF WARRANTY. LOOK LIKE THERE IS A PROBLEM GENERATED BY A BAD ENGINEERING DESIGN AND TOYOTA MFG. KNOWS ABOUT. WHY THEY DON'T STAY BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND RECALL IT FOR REPLACEMENT WITH A BETTER DESIGN INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT? *TR
THE ENGINE ON TOYOTA RAV 4 STARTED TO RACE AT MAXIMUM RPMS WHILE I WAS PARKING THE CAR. FORTUNATELY IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. I PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR BUT THAT DID NO GOOD. I TURNED THE KEY OFF AND THEN RESTARTED THE CAR. THE PROBLEM REPEATED. I DID THIS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE ENGINE STARTED TO IDLE NORMALLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER,BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I' WAS CONCERNE DTHE PROBLEM WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN WHILE DRIVING.*AK
I BOUGHT MY BRAND NEW TOYOTA RAV 4 IN AUGUST 2006. I USE IT VERY LIGHTLY MOSTLY TO COMMUTE TO WORK WHICH IS ABOUT 10 MILES. ABOUT 9 MONTH LATER, I HEARD A SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES. WHEN I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THE FRONT BRAKES NEED TO BE CHANGED. I ARGUED THAT THE BRAKES HAVE TO BE DEFECTIVE SINCE WITH MY PREVIOUS CAR I CHANGED THE BRAKES ONCE IN 16 YEARS. THE DEALER ARGUED THAT I HAVE TO BE AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVER THAT WHY I WORE THE BRAKES SO FAST AND THAT IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. THIS PROBLEM WAS REPEATED TWICE AFTER THAT. THIS MEANS THAT IN LESS THAN 4 YEARS. I CHANGED THE FRONT BRAKE PADS TWICE AND THE REAR BRAKE PADS ONCE. I FOUND THIS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL. SO FAR I HAVE SPENT ALMOST $1000 TO REPEATEDLY CHANGE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. RECENTLY I BELIEVE I FOUND THE PROBLEM. WHEN I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR SPEEDS VERY EASILY AND VERY FAST. HOWEVER, WHEN I RELEASE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR DOES NOT SLOW DOWN SPONTANEOUSLY. THE GAS PEDAL TAKES AN UNUSUALLY LONG TIME TO GO TO THE IDLE POSITION. HENCE, I HAVE TO USE THE BRAKES MUCH MORE FREQUENTLY WHICH WEARS THEM OUT VERY FAST. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND FIXED. I AM GOING TO THE DEALER TOMORROW. *TR
THIS IS IN REGARD TO THE TOYOTA GAS PEDAL RECALL. I HAVE A 2006 RAV4 AND DID IN FACT EXPERIENCE AN ACCELERATION PROBLEM ONCE BACK IN 2007 OR 2008. IT WAS VERY BRIEF AND THE CAR RECOVERED QUICKLY. I WAS ONLY GOING 35 OR 40. I PLAYED WITH THE GAS PEDAL AND IT STOPPED. IT DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN, BUT NOW AM CONCERNED BECAUSE ACCORDING TO THE VIN NUMBER AND YEAR OF MY CAR, IT ACTUALLY ISN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND MAYBE THE RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED. *TR
I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 4CYL, 4WD. I CURRENTLY HAVE JUST UNDER 15K MILES AND I'VE HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE CAR HESITATING (OR THE THROTTLE LAGGING). AT TIMES, USUALLY ONE A WEEK OR SO, IF I PUSH ON THE GAS PEDAL WHEN I NEED TO SPEED UP, IT'S AS IF NOTHING HAPPENS. I HAVE TO LET THE PEDAL GO AND PUSH IT AGAIN TO SPEED UP. IT USUALLY HAPPENS IF I'M TRYING TO MERGE INTO FASTER TRAFFIC, OR AT TIMES WHEN I'M TAKING A SLOW TURN AND THEN GO TO SPEED UP AFTERWARDS. *TR

CLUNKING NOISE IN STEERING WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT. WAS OCCASIONAL AT FIRST NOW IS CONSISTENT. BROUGHT IN WHEN UNDER WARRANTY WHEN NOISE WAS INCONSISTENT NOW THAT NOISE IS CONSISTENT AND WARRANTY IS UP THEY WON'T PAY FOR IT. *TR
TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4. WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE THE CVS, ABS, 4 WHEEL DRIVE, AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS REMAINED ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE AND FOR AS LONG AS 1 WEEK. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE, BUT THAT THEY WOULD RESEARCH IT. AS OF THIS DATE THE DEALER HAD NOT INFORMED THE CONTACT OF THEIR FINDINGS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17,000, AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,000. *AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 11,500 MILES BECAUSE THE ROTORS WERE FAILING. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN SQUEALING AND GRINDING VERY BADLY 4,400 MILES LATER. WHEN SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY STATED THAT THE NOISE ORIGINATED FROM THE REAR BRAKES, IN BETWEEN THE VACUUM AND THE ROTORS. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THE SYSTEM WAS POORLY DESIGNED. THE POSSIBLE MILEAGE IS 16,700 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,500. THE CONSUMER PROVIDED REPAIR INVOICES. UPDATED 08/27/07 *TR
TOYOTA TSB-0308-08 FOR A STEERING CLUNK ON 2006 AND LATER TOYOTA RAV4'S SHOULD BE A RECALL, BEFORE STEERING GOES OUT IN THESE VEHICLES. THE TSB INDICATES THAT "BEEFED UP" STEERING SHAFTS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. BUT MANY CARS ARE NOW "OUT OF WARRANTY" BECAUSE THE DEALERS CLAIMED NOT TO BE ABLE TO HEAR THE NOISE. NOW THAT MANY OF THESE CARS ARE OUT OF WARRANTY, THE COST TO FIX IS EXCESSIVE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS AND FIX THIS PROBLEM ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE THERE IS A FATALITY FROM IT. ANY TOYOTA FORUM ON THE INTERNET HAS SCORES OF COMPLAINTS FROM RAV4 OWNERS, AND STORIES OF INDIFFERENCE ON THE PART OF THE TOYOTA DEALERS. PROBLEM: STEERING AUDIBLE CLUNK AND THE FELL OF THE CLUNK, WHILE TURNING LEFT OF RIGHT AT LOW SPEEDS. *TR
LIKE MANY OTHER 2006 RAV4 OWNERS, I HAVE EXPERIENCE THE SO-CALLED "CLUNKING" NOISE WITH THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS APPEAR TO BE A KNOW PROBLEM (DESIGN FLAW) WITH THIS MODEL, YET TOYOTA FAIL TO TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY AND INITIATIVE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. DO WE HAVE TO EXPERIENCE SUCH CATASTROPHIC EVENTS AS THE "ACCELERATION ISSUE", BEFORE TOYOTA DECIDE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? *TR
EARLY ON IN OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE A LIGHT 'CLUNKING' NOISE COULD BE HEARD WHILE TURNING THE VEHICLE. NOISE PROGRESSIVELY BECAME WORSE. I REPEATEDLY REPORTED THE INCIDENT TWICE TO THE DEALERSHIP - TOYOTA LAKE CITY, SEATTLE, WA, PRIOR TO EXPIRATION OF VEHICLE WARRANTY. EVERY TIME I WAS ADVISED THE DEALERSHIP STAFF WAS "UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE". CURRENTLY, THE NOISE IS EXTREMELY LOUD, AND THERE'S A 'POPPING' FEEL IN THE STEERING COLUMN/STEERING WHEEL, COUPLED WITH A LOUD CLUNK. I'M CONCERNED FOR MY, AND MY FAMILY'S SAFETY, HOWEVER I DON'T HAVE $800.00 TO REPAIR AN ITEM WHICH SHOULDN'T BE HAVING ISSUES. NOTE: I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 VIN#[XXX], WHICH IS BEGINNING TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUE AS 2006 TOYOTA RAV4. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND TOYOTA IS FULLY AWARE OF THE ISSUE VIA TSB# ST001-08. TOYOTA HAS DEVELOPED A "NEW" STEERING SHAFT WHICH REMEDIES THE ISSUE. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL, FOR IT IMPACTS A LARGE MAJORITY OF THE RAV4 OWNERS - ANOTHER TOYOTA ISSUE WHICH THEY KNOW ABOUT, BUT TRY TO HIDE! WHEN I MAKE A TURN AT SLOWER SPEEDS THERE IS A LOUD CLUNK COMING FROM THE TIRES AND I FEEL IT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES FROM ABOUT 25 MPH TO STOP FOR TRAFFIC AT A LIGHT. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKE THE ENGINE ACCELERATED AND I HAD TO STAND HARD ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP FROM HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE ENGINE SPEED CAME BACK TO NORMAL. AT THAT TIME I DOUBLE CHECKED MY FOOT POSITION ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND AM CONFIDENT THAT I WAS IN NO WAY CONTACTING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. *JB
INCIDENT NO INJURIES SO FAR I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 PURCHASED IN MEXICO SERIAL# TMZD31V865021536 THERE ARE TWO INCIDENTS REPORTED WITH DEALER IN MEXICO BUT NO RESPONSE AT ALL: 1. THE PASSANGER SEAT EXCESIVELY VIBRATES AND WOBBLES WHEN NOBODY IS SEATED, I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT POSES A RISK; I HAVE HAD THREE PREVIUOSLY NEW VEHICLES AND NEVER I HAVE SEEN A SEEN VIBRATE AND MAKE NOISE AND RATTLES BY ITSELF WHEN YOU ARE ON THE ROAD AND NOONE IS SEATED. 2. WATER LEAK FROM THE HEBA OR AIRCONDITION UNIT, I HAVE AT LEAST 4 INSTANCES IN WHICH WATER LEAKS FOM THE IP OR DASH, THE WATER POSSES A RISK OF ELECTRICA SHORT OR MAJOR MAILFUNCTION, IS COMMING FROM INSIDE THE DASHBOARD IN THE PASSANGER SIDE ! PLEASE HELP, DEALER DO NOTHING, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS POSSES A RISK MY GUESS IS YES. I'M REPORTING HERE BECAUSE IN MEXICO THERE IS NOT AN ENTITY AS THIS ONE AND THIS VEHICLE IS ALSO SOLD OVER THE USA. THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED OVER JAPAN AND IS THE VERY SAME THAT TOYOTA SELLS IN AMERICA. *NM

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN AND ECU MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RELATED SERVICE BULLETIN. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 60,000.
MY 2006 RAV 4 HAS HAD A SERIES OF FRONT END PROBLEMS DATING FROM JAN 2007 TO APRIL 2009. IT HAD BEEN IN THE SHOP 9 TIMES (WARRANTY WORK) WITH NUMEROUS PARTS BEING REPLACED BEFORE TOYOTA HAD THEIR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REP COME AND LOOK AT IT. THEY ENDED UP REPLACING JUST ABOUT ALL OF THE FRONT END COMPONENT PARTS EXCEPT THE STEERING. THAT WAS THE 10TH TIME THE CAR WAS IN. NOW AFTER 21 MONTHS THE SOUND IS BACK AND I CAN EVEN FEEL VIBRATION KNOCK IN THE STEERING. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW IN JULY 2006. MILEAGE AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE WAS 4847. MILEAGE IN APRIL 2009 WAS 26737. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 41800. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR WITH THE FEELING THAT SOMETHING IS GOING TO BREAK WHILE I'M MAKING A SHARP TURN. *TR
IN JUNE 2006, I PURCHASED A NEW 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4 SPORT. GREAT VEHICLE. I DRIVE 100 MILES A DAY ROUND TRIP TO WORK. AS OF 1/12/07, THERE ARE 15,725 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. AROUND 12,500 MILES, I NOTICED A STRANGE GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEN MAKING A HARD RIGHT OR LEFT TURN (TURNING INTO A PARKING PLACE OR MY DRIVEWAY). I TALKED WITH THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THE FIRST ATTEMPT WAS TO HEAVILY LUBRICATE THE STEERING AS I WAS TOLD EVERYTHING WAS DRY. THE CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED FOR AN OIL AND LUBE EVERY 4,000 MILES. THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A NEW RACK AND PINION STEERING UNIT. THE DEALER FORGOT TO ORDER THE PART. AFTER A WEEK AND A HALF, I CALLED TO FIND OUT THAT THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER AS THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE'S STEERING. WHEN I ASKED IF I WAS SAFE DRIVING 100 MILES A DAY, AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE, I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT A SAFE SPEED OF 40 MPH. (I INFORMED THE DEALER THAT I WOULD BE KILLED ON THE FLORIDA ROADS IF I DROVE THAT SLOW. - THEY AGREED.) AGAIN, I ASKED IF I WAS SAFE. THEN I WAS TOLD THAT ALTHOUGH THE PART WAS ON BACKORDER, THAT THEY WOULD SEE WHAT THEY COULD DO. I WAS CALLED WITHIN AN HOUR AND TOLD THAT THE PART WOULD BE IN WITHIN A WEEK. THE NEW RACK AND PINION UNIT AND GEARS WERE INSTALLED YESTERDAY. ADDITIONALLY, A RECOMMENDED WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS DONE, AND IT FEELS AS IF THE FRONT BRAKES WERE ADJUSTED. THE VEHICLE FEELS GOOD, BUT THE CRUNCHING NOISE IS STILL THERE. DOES TOYOTA HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING ON THESE VEHICLES? IF SO, I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED. I TRADED MY CHRYSLER FOR THE TOYOTA SO THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE TO GO TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE ALL OF THE TIME. THE REAL QUESTION IS: AM I SAFE????? *NM
THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT HAS BEEN LOOSE SINCE 30,000 MILES ON MY 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4. THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLITEN OUT, BUT THE MECHANIC CLAIMED THAT HE COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. IT CAUSES INCONSISTANT STEERING WHEN BACKING UP AND TURNING. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS COULD CAUSE A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CAPABILITY AT HIGH SPEEDS. THIS HAS BEEN A WIDELY REPORTED PROBLEM WITH THE TOYOTA RAV 4 AND TOYOTA WILL NOT REPLACE THE PART.
THE BOLT HOLDING THE LOWER PART OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT TO THE VEHICLE (BOTTOM PART OF "B" PILLAR) BECAME DETACHED, LEAVING SEAT BELT ATTACHED ONLY AT UPPER MOUNTING POINT. SEAT BELT WAS RENDERED INOPERABLE. IT APPEARS THAT THE BOLT WAS NOT TIGHTENED DURING THE ASSEMBLY OF THE VEHICLE. *JB

THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THE FRONT END DAMAGE WILL NEED TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE THEY CAN DIAGNOSE ERRORS IN THE COMPUTER. MY 2006 RAV4 HAS DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL) ALONG WITH THE OPTITRON DASH (LCD DASH THAT IS LIT WHENEVER THE CAR IS RUNNING - AS OPPOSED TO THE DASHBOARD BEING LIT ONLY WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE TURNED ON). ON THE RAV4 TOYOTA ONLY PROVIDES A SMALL ICON TO LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR HEADLIGHTS ARE ON. WITH THE OPTITRON DASH AND DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS I AM ABLE TO GET INTO MY CAR AT NIGHT, SEE THE LIGHTED DASH AND LIGHT COMING FROM THE HEADLIGHTS AND ERRONEOUSLY BELIEVE THAT MY FULL NIGHTTIME HEADLIGHTS ARE ON (INSTEAD OF THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS). THE PROBLEM WITH THIS SETUP IS MY TAIL LIGHTS ARE NOT ON. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS RUNNING W/O TAIL LIGHTS AT NIGHT COULD CAUSE REAR-END COLLISIONS. TOYOTA TPMS SYSTEM ON RAV4 NOT USABLE WITH SECOND SET OF (SNOW) TIRES. WHEN I PURCHASED AN ADDITIONAL SET OF TOYOTA RAV4 OEM RIMS FOR SNOW TIRES, I WANTED TO PUT TPMS RECEIVES ON THOSE RIMS. WHEN I CALLED MY TOYOTA DEALER, THEY SUGGESTED THAT I NOT PURCHASE AN ADDITIONAL SET OF TPMS VALUES AS MY RAV4 COULD ONLY HOLD ONE SET OF TPMS DATA. THEY INSTEAD SUGGESTED THAT I IGNORE THE TPMS WARNING LIGHT, OR COVER IT UP WITH A PIECE OF BLACK ELECTRICAL TAPE. *JB
I BOUGHT THE CAR BACK IN AUGUST 2006 AT TOYOTA DEALER. THERE WERE CLUNKY SOUNDS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN AFTER COUPLE MONTHS OF PURCHASE. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO DEALER TO REQUEST FOR A FIX BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THE CLUNKY SOUNDS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS NORMAL AS THE WAY THE IT CAME FROM TOYOTA FACTORY. THERE WAS NO FIX TO CORRECT THAT CLUNKY NOISES FROM STEERING WHEEL ON THAT DAY. I HAD TRUSTED TO TOYOTA'S ADVICE ON THAT DAY AND KEPT DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL OTHER MECHANICS AND FRIENDS TOLD ME THAT MY CAR NEEDED TO BE FIXED WITH THE STEERING WHEEL SINCE THERE HAD BEEN CLUNKY NOISES WHEN THEY TESTED DRIVE ON MY CAR. THE SOUNDS ALWAYS CAME UP WHEN I MOVED THE STEERING WHEEL. I CALLED TOYOTA SERVICE AROUND 06/2014 ABOUT THE CLUNKY NOISE SINCE THE CONDITION GOT WORSE. I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY SO THERE IS NOTHING FROM TOYOTA TO HELP FIXING THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA TOLD ME THAT THERE WOULD BE RECALL IF THERE HAD BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD. I WAS ADVISED TO WAIT FOR A RECALL. FOR SAFETY CONCERN, I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AFTER MY CONVERSATION WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE ON 06/2014. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP HAD QUOTED WITH A FIX FOR $600 FOR THE PART NOT INCLUDING THE LABOR. THE CLUNKY NOISE WAS CAME FROM THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING WHEEL SHAFT. I COULD NOT AFFORD TO FIX BECAUSE THE PRICE WAS TOO EXPENSIVE SO I HAD TO KEEP THE CAR CONDITION AS IT WAS. TOYOTA SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY COMPLAINTS FROM 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 OWNERS WHO HAVE THE SAME THIS INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. ENGINE HESITATES UPON ACCELERATION FROM STANDING START, CREATING AN UNSAFE SITUATION. *JB
MY NEARLY NEW (3000 MI.) 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE WITH ALL FOUR WHEELS LOCKING UP SOLIDLY. AN EXPERT FROM CALIFORNIA HAD TO BE CALLED IN TO ANALYZE THE PROBLEM, SINCE THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAD NEVER SEEN APROBLEM LIKE THIS. THE PROBATIBLE CAUSE OF THIS FAILURE WAS MENTIONED TO ME MY MAKING A PANIC ACTIVATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL WHICH DEMAGED A BRAKE SWITCH LOCATED ABOVE THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE SWITCH,ITS SUPPORT BRACKET, ALL BRAKE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS HAD TO BE REPLACED AND WERE SHIPPED TO THE HOME OFFICE.THE REPAIR TOOK THREE WEEKS. MY SUV WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH THE BRAKE SWITCH THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE CAUSED THE COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE IN THE SAME LOCATION AS IT WAS BEFORE. I PURCHASED A TOYOTA 2006 RAV 4 IN JANUARY OF 2006 AND HAD THE CAR SERVICED AT THE TOYOTA DEALER PER THE SCHEDULED FACTORY MAINTENANCE SUGGESTIONS. IN OCTOBER OF 2006, I WAS TRYING TO AVOID RUNNING A YELLOW LIGHT ON PEACHTREE STREET IN ATLANTA, AND ACCELERATED HARD TO AVOID THE YELLOW LIGHT. THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AND WAS OUT OF CONTROL. EVEN THOUGH I LIFTED MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE PEDAL. AFTER GETTING THROUGH THE INITIAL SHOCK I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL, THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO THE RED LINE AND I TURNED THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF. AFTER WAITING FOR A MINUTE I RESTARTED THE CAR IN PARK AND THE ENGINE IDLED NORMALLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND AFTER INSPECTING IT HE TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I RECENTLY TOOK MY CAR INTO MY TIRE DEALER FOR A TIRE ROTATION AND THE MECHANIC NOTICED THE PROBLEM RIGHT AWAY AND SAID THAT I NEED TO GET IT FIXED ASAP. THEY SAID THE ROTORS HAD TO BE CUT, SO THEY CUT THEM AND PUT NEW BRAKES ON THEM. THE PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN IN LESS THAN A MONTH. I DRIVE A LOT IN THE HIGHWAY, SO I PUT SOME MILES IN THE RAV4. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT AGAIN, AGAIN AND AGAIN BECAUSE THEY KEPT ON MAKING NOISE AND I WAS AFRAID THE RAV4 WOULDN'T STOP WHEN I PUT ON THE BRAKES. AFTER THE 3RD TRY BECAUSE THE BRAKES WERE STILL MAKING NOISE AND THEY WEREN'T STOPPING CORRECTLY AND THE PEOPLE AT THE DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT ME LIKE I WAS CRAZY. THEY SAID THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. I CHANGED TO ANOTHER TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. AT THIS DEALERSHIP, FIRST THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG, BUT THEY TOOK A RIDE WITH ME IN THE RAV4 AND REALIZED WHAT I SAID. THEY PUT NEW FRONT ROTORS AND NEW FRONT BRAKES. WHEN I WENT TO GET THE RAV4, I TOLD THEM THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. THEY SAID TO TRY IT OUT FOR AT LEAST 500 MILES BEFORE THEY PUT THE REAR ROTORS. THAT WAS AT 18,000 MILES. AT 19,000 MILES I TOOK IT BACK BECAUSE THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. THEY PUT THE REAR ROTORS AND BRAKES. NOW, AFTER FIVE MONTHS AND 8,000 MILES IT STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS TIME, THE LIGHTS ARE TURNING ON FOR BRAKES, 4WD, ABS, VSC ARE TURNING ON. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE FRONT BRAKES ARE COMPLETED GONE AND THE ROTORS NEED TO BE CUT. I COMPLAINT BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY 8,000 MORE AND THEY WERE USED IN THE TURNPIKE. THEY SAID THE LIGHTS WENT ON BECAUSE THE BRAKE FLUID WENT VERY LOW. I STILL HAD TO PAY TO PUT ON MY BRAKES AND CUT THE ROTORS. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE LIGHTS OF BRAKES, 4WD, ABS, VSC TURNED ON AGAIN. I AM AFRAID OF DRIVING THE RAV4 AND IT WON'T STOP IN TIME AND THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. *JB
HESITATES TO ACCELERATE. IT WOULD NOT GO OVER 20 MPH FOR OVER 2 MILES. I LIVE RIGHT OFF A MAJOR HIGHWAY, AND WHEN I TRY TO PULL ON HIGHWAY, CAR DOES NOT WANT TO GO. I HAD IT TO THE DEALER ABOUT 4 TIMES, BUT THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO GO. ONCE THEY CLAIMED IT WAS THE FLOOR MAT JAMMING UNDER THE GAS PEDAL. THEY KEPT IT FOR A WEEK AND FOUND NOTHING. ALSO, THEY LOOKED ON A WEBSITE AND FOUND NO OTHER COMPLAINTS. I AM VERY UNHAPPY. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO.*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4. SHE WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH WHEN SHE TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN. THE DRIVER STATED THAT SHE TRIED PLACING BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT IT DID NOT HELP. EVENTUALLY THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN. SHE ALSO TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BUT THEIR RECORDS INDICATE THAT THERE WAS A BRAKE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 500. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 28,000.
INTERMEDIATE STEERING LINKAGE MAKES A POPPING NOISE. CONDITION HAS BEEN ADDRESSED UNDER TSB ST 001-08: HOWEVER THIS CONDITION HAS GROWN STEADILY WORSE AND WE FEAR MAY LEAD TO STEERING FAILURE. TOYOTA DEALER WILL NOT REPAIR UNDER 36,000 MILE WARRANTY AS 36 MONTHS HAVE ELAPSED SINCE OUR PURCHASE OF THIS NEW CAR. PLEASE ADD OUR COMPLAINT TO YOUR DATA BASE WITH THE HOPE THAT TOYOTA CAN BE FORCED TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS FACTORY STEERING DEFECT. *TR
