R/R SWAY BAR END LINK BROKEN. UPPER AND INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT BROKEN.
I HAD A FRONT END CRASH WHEN DRIVING 60-65 MPH ON I-94 ON FEB 4 2016, SKIDDED ON ICE NEAR ALEXANDRIA MN, AND COLLIDED NEAR FENCE. THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. NO INJURIES. STATE PATROL REPORT FILED-CASE #716900207. COUNTRY INSURANCE CLAIM-205-006-8259. IT WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. TOYOTA IS NOT GIVING ME A PROPER RESPONSE, JUST GAVE THEIR CASE #:CASE #1602060045.
I HEAR A CLUNK, POP, OR KNOCK-TYPE NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. TOYOTA WAS ACUTELY AWARE OF THIS ISSUE (PLEASE SEE ATTACHED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ST001-08) AND HAD TO REDESIGN THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. UNFORTUNATELY, TOYOTA HAS NOT TAKEN THE STEPS TO RECALL ALL EFFECTED VEHICLES AND REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE PART. I URGE THE NHTSA TO TAKE IMMEDIATE STEPS TO FORCE TOYOTA TO ISSUE A RECALL AND MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS AS THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN WITNESSED IN A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE 06-07 TOYOTA RAV4 VEHICLES.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION BEGAN AROUND 115K MILES. ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH 3K MILE OIL CHANGE (1.5K MILES IN) OIL LIGHT GOES ON, DIP STICK CONFIRMS ALMOST NO OIL. FOR THE NEXT 1.5K MILES NEED TO ADD 2-3 QUARTS (I ADD 1 QT AT A TIME TO SAVE $, ALWAYS KEEP A QUART IN THE CAR AND LARGER AMT IN THE GARAGE). DEALER SAID IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THERE IS WIDE BODY OF EVIDENCE ON FORUM SITES THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM (HTTP://WWW.TOYOTAPROBLEMS.COM/TRENDS/EXCESSIVE-OIL-CONSUMPTION/) AND THERE'S AN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE ISSUE, BUT NO RECALL.
DRIVING 50 MPG AROUND CURVE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC STEERING LOCKED UP HARDLY ABLE TO PULL.OFF SIDE OF ROAD. HAPPENED AGAIN TODAY 2 TIMES AND HAPPENED AT LEAST 5 TIMES BEFORE IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS.STEERING FROZE HAD TO GET OF TO THE SIDE AND RESTART THEN IT WAS ABLE TO STEER BUT BATTERY.LIGHT FLICKERS. THREE OTHER LIGHTS ON THE LEFT OF THE DASHBOARD STAYED ON AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. WENT TO PEP-BOYS AND I WAS ASKED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY DUE TO LOW VOLTAGE. BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND ONE DAY LATER SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN.
OIL CUMSUMPTION RECALL. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD POP ON ONLY A FEW WEEKS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. BROUGHT THE CAR BACK IN 1200 MILES AFTER THE OIL CHANGE, AND THEY SAID THE CAR FAILED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST, AND THAT I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THEY HAVE A FIX. FOUR MONTHS LATER I AM STILL WAITING. HAD ANOTHER OIL CHANGE NEAR THE END OF MARCH, I INQUIRED ON WHAT THE STATUS WAS FOR THIS FIX, THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE THIS IS A LARGE NATIONAL RECALL THAT I WAS ON THE BOTTOM OF A REPAIR LIST, AND THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE PLANT IN THE UNITED STATES MAKING PARTS FOR THIS RECALL. THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT I HAVE BEEN MOVED UP TO NUMBER 5 ON THEIR WAIT LIST. TOWARD THE END OF APRIL, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN. I FIRST CHECKED THE DIPSTICK, AND THERE WAS NO OIL ON IT. I REFILLED THE OIL MYSELF AND IT TOOK A FULL 5 QUARTS. NOW THERE IS OIL ON THE DIPSTICK, STILL HAVE YET TO HEAR A THING FROM TOYOTA. WHY ARE THEY MAKING ME WAIT? ARE THEY WAITING UNTIL THE WARRANTY ON MY CAR EXPIRES SO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR? IN MY OPINION, TO MAKE ME HAVE TO WAIT THIS LONG IS NOT RIGHT. TOYOTA IS A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY AND SHOULD HAVE THE PARTS READY ESPECIALLY FOR A RECALL OF THIS MAGNITUDE.
DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 75MPH AFTER ABOUT 5 HOURS WHEN A BUNCH OF WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON (INCLUDING BATTERY, AIR BAG, AND BRAKE), MY POWER STEERING FAILED AND MY SPEEDOMETER QUIT WORKING. PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND LET MY CAR SIT FOR A MINUTE, RESTARTED MY CAR AND THREE DIFFERENT LIGHTS CAME ON (VSC, CHECK ENGINE AND SLIP INDICATOR) AND MY CRUISE CONTROL WOULDN'T WORK ANYMORE. MY CAR CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 110,000 MILES. THIS IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE; THIS IS A DEFECT. FROM READING ONLINE, THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME ISSUE. THIS COULD BE A FATAL DEFECT AND SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY POWER STEERING HAS FAILED WHILE DRIVING.
THE CAR IS CONSUMING AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL AT ALL TIMES. IT HAS INHIBITED TRIPS AND ADDED UNFORESEEN COST TO THE CAR BETWEEN OIL CHANGES.
TAKATA RECALL. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AMMONIUM NITRATE INFLATOR IS NOW SUSPECT ACCORDING TO TOYOTA. A REPLACEMENT PART WILL NOT BE IN THE PIPELINE FOR QUITE A WHILE AT BEST. TOYOTA REFUSES TO REMOVE THE EXPLOSIVE BECAUSE IT'S A "SAFETY ITEM." IT DEFIES COMMON SENSE. I WANT IT DISABLED UNTIL THEY CAN FIX IT. WHAT KIND OF MORON WOULD DRIVE AROUND WITH A LOADED GUN AIMED AT THIS HEAD? ARE YOU GUYS LISTENING?
APRIL, 2015 TOOK RAV4 IN FOR RECALLS. AFTER RECEIVING THE VEHICLE BACK PERIODICALLY IT WOULD FAIL TO ACCELERATE. I THOUGHT THE COMPUTER WOULD MAYBE ADJUST ITSELF. IT DIDN'T. IT PERIODICALLY STALLS OR FAILS TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN RUN OVER SEVERAL TIMES. CALLED TOYOTA OF DENTON TODAY. THEY DENIED THAT ANYTHING THEY DID WOULD HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT, EVEN THOUGH WE DROVE THE VEHICLE 60K MILES AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. I HAVE TWO TOYOTAS AND DENIAL OF A PROBLEM IS FIRST ON THE LIST IT SEEMS. THIS DRIVE BY WIRE SHOULD BE OUTLAWED.
LEFT FRONT INPUT SEAL HAS LEAKED FLUID TWICE NOW. FIRST TIME WAS 9/25/2012 @ 56,516 MILES. SECOND TIME WAS ON 1/12/2016 @ 101,753 MILES. MY INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR SERVICE, CORAM PRECISION AUTO OF CORAM, NY WENT TO TOYOTA TO GET THE SEAL NEEDED TO FIX THE LEAK BOTH TIMES AND ASKED TOYOTA PARTS COUNTER IF THEY KNEW OF A RECALL AND THEY SAID NO. THEN THEY ASKED WHY THEY HAD SO MANY SEALS IN STOCK IF THERE HAD BEEN NO RECALLS. I AM ON THIS WEBSITE AND DON'T SEE ANY RECALLS EITHER BUT I WONDER IF ANY COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED. NOTE: I HAVE SEVERAL RECALLS FOR MY TOYOTA RAV4 FOR GAS PEDAL AND NOW FOR THE 'REAR DIFFERENTIAL COUPLING' WHICH EXTENDS MY WARRANTEE UNTIL 2017 FROM TOYOTA AND FROM NHTSA FOR MY DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG IN 2014 BUT CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ON THIS WED SITE. TOYOTA IS A WELL KNOWN GLOBAL AUTO COMPANY WITH HIGH STANDARD AND HIGH PERFORMANCE AUTOS. IT'S TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR AN ENGINE TO CONSUME OIL AFTER 60,000 MILES. THE LOW MILEAGE ENGINE MALFUNCTION IS TOTALLY DUE TO BAD QUALITY MANUFACTURING PRACTICES, LOW STANDARDS OF QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE WHICH MAY CAUSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN LOSSES AND PENALTY FOR THE TOYOTA 01/15/2016 FILE NUMBER: 1512120607 MOTOR SALES COMPANY. ONLY IN CALIFORNIA OVER 40 CUSTOMERS REPORTED COMPLAINS TO CALIFORNIA BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR A DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIR OVER THE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION OF TOYOTA RAV4. THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES COMPANY IS REQUIRED TO CORRESPOND WITHIN THREE BUSINESS DAYS UPON RECEIVING THIS LETTER TO PREVENT FURTHER LEGAL COMPLAINT BY THE PLAINTIFF. HEREBY THE PLAINTIFF DEMAND THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES TO ISSUE A FULL REFUND IN AMOUNT OF $ 1395.63 FOR THE COST RELATED TO THE AUTO PARTS DAMAGED AS THE RESULT OF ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION. THE DAMAGED TO THE FOLLOWING AUTO PARTS AND SERVICES (PUMP ASSY, BELT, THERMOSTAT,GASKET, GEAR ASSY, PLUNG, TENSIONER, GASKET, INSPECT BLOCK AND OIL CONSUMPTION HEAD) WAS CAUSED AS THE RESULT OF ENGINE MALFUNCTIONS. HERBY THE CUSTOMER IS LOOKING FOR PROMPTED RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES PRIOR TO HIS/HER FURTHER COMPLAIN TO CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIR WHICH MAY LEAD TO A RECALL ON THE TOYOTA RAV MODEL, AND CAUSES THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES TO PAY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON PENALTY, AND FEES TO GENERAL PUBLIC. (ATTACHMENT 1 COPY OF THE SALES RECEIPT AND THE REPAIR'S WORKSHEET).
OIL INDICATOR LIT UP. I CHECKED THE DIP STICK AND OIL WAS WELL BELOW MINIMUM LEVEL. I ADDED 2 QUARTS OF OIL. MY RAV4 HAS MORE THAN 1000 MILES LEFT BEFORE THE SCHEDULED 5K OIL CHANGE AND NEITHER HAS IT BEEN 6MOS YET. BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY PERFORMED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. CAR MILEAGE WAS 87000. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK AFTER 1000MILES AS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. THE TEST TURNED OUT NEGATIVE. COUDN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE AS THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE WERE A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS BUT NO ASSOCIATED RECALLS REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. ANOTHER PROBLEM IN MY RAV4 IS WHEN STEPPING ON THE BRAKES, IT ACCELERATES FIRST BEFORE STOPPING. AGAIN THERE WERE NO RECALLS ABOUT IT.
ENGINE OIL LEAKS & VIBRATION COME FROM THE ENGINE WHEN YOU BRAKE
NOTICED CLUNKING IN STEERING WHEN TURNING EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT. LOOKED UP PROBLEM ON INTERNET AND FOUND THAT IT IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. ACCORDING TO INTERNET THERE OVER 400,000 COMPLAINTS. CALLED TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THERE IS A TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON THE PROBLEM AND IT REQUIRES REPLACING STEERING SHAFT. I ALSO READ ON THE INTERNET THAT VEHICLES WHO REPLACED THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT OFTEN HAVE TO REPLACE IT AGAIN. THIS SEEMS TO ME THAT TOYOTA CAN NOT FIX THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM AND NOW IT BECOMES THE OWNERS RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP ON CHANGING AN INTRICATE PART TO DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES. WHY WITH SO MANY FAILURES HASN'T YOUR AGENCY WARNED THE PUBLIC OR IS NHTSA SAYING THERE IS NO ISSUE OR SAFETY CONCERN. PLEASE INFORM ME THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT A PROBLEM AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT AND I DON'T HAVE TO SPEND $800.00 TO FIX IT.
WE HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 THAT HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM FOR AT LEAST THE PAST TWO YEARS. WE HAVE BROUGHT IT IN THE OUR MECHANIC ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS AND ALSO TO THE DEALERSHIP. THERE WAS A RECALL NOTICE LAST YEAR AND WE HAD THE REQUIRED TESTING DONE TWICE IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH OF 2016 BY THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIMED THE CAR PASSED THE TEST AND WAS NOT DEFECTIVE. HOWEVER THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. THE WE HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE TESTING WHICH HAS ONLY JUST EXPIRED IN OCTOBER 2016. THIS PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED PRIOR TO THE EXPIRATION OF OUR WARRANTY BUT TOYOTA CLAIMED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. WE HAVE ALWAYS FOLLOWED THE MANUFACTURERS SUGGEST MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE AND HAVE THE SERVICE RECORDS IN OUR POSSESSION. IN THE LAST YEAR TO 18 MONTHS TO TWO YEARS WE WOULD HAVE TO BRING THE CAR IN MORE FREQUENTLY THAN THE MFG RECOMMENDED SERVICE SCHEDULE, AS IT WAS NOT MAKING MORE THAN 2000 MILES BEFORE THE CHECK OIL LIGHT WOULD COME ON. MOST RECENTLY AS LITTLE AS 1200 MILES.
OUR 2007 RAV4 IS CONSUMING/BURNING OIL AT AN EXTREME RATE. THERE IS NO OIL LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE. WE ARE ADDING A QUART EVERY 2-3 WEEKS. WE HAD THE DEALERSHIP PERFORM THEIR "TEST" (THREE TIMES) WHEN THE RECALL CAME OUT OVER A YEAR AGO. AT THAT TIME WE WERE TOLD OUR VEHICLE DID NOT MEET THE CRITERIA TO BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. (RECORDS WILL SHOW THAT PRIOR TO THE RECALL EVEN COMING OUT, WE HAD TAKEN IT IN FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION...SO WHEN THE RECALL CAME OUT WE HOPED IT WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM.) WE WERE SHOCKED WHEN WE WERE TOLD IT DIDN'T "QUALIFY". WE HAVE JUST CONTINUED ADDING OIL...THEN IN AUGUST OF 2017 WE SPENT NEARLY $2,800 TO HAVE REPAIRS DONE THAT WE HOPED WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. TO OUR SURPRISE, THE OIL HAS BEEN DEPLETING AT AN EVEN FASTER RATE THAN BEFORE! SO WE TOOK IT BACK IN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO PERFORMED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST DONE UNDER THE PRIOR RECALL, AND WERE TOLD IT FAILED MISERABLY THEN! WE UNDERSTAND THE RECALL PERIOD HAD EXPIRED, BUT THE VEHICLE STILL HAD UNDER 200,000 MILES ON IT WHEN IT FAILED. HOW DOES A VEHICLE GET RECALLED ONLY FOR A CERTAIN WINDOW OF TIME, WHEN WE WERE TOLD IT DOESN'T MEET THE CRITERIA - AND AFTER THAT WINDOW IS "CLOSED" THE VEHICLE FAILS THE TEST? WE ARE APPEALING TOYOTA'S DECISION NOT TO COVER THIS PROBLEM UNDER THE RECALL. WE HAVE BEEN LOYAL TOYOTA CUSTOMERS FOR DECADES AND REQUEST YOUR CONSIDERATION IN THIS MATTER.
LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT AND WHILE BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY NEAR THE STEERING WHEEL. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN 2007 AND WITHIN 2 YEARS (~30000 MILES) THE SAME ISSUE HAD OCCURRED AND TOYOTA DEALER REPLACED THE PART UNDER WARRANTY. WITHIN 6 YEARS OF THE FIRST OCCURRENCE I AM FACING THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO TOYOTA FOR A FREE REPAIR BUT TOYOTA HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE THE PART UNDER PRODUCT DEFECT. THIS IS A PRODUCT DEFECT AND ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE AND HENCE TOYOTA SHOULD MAKE A NATIONAL RECALL.
2007 RAV4 USES AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED WITH APPROXIMATELY 146,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 4,000 AND I HAVE HAD TO ADD 2 QUARTS OF OIL TO THE ENGINE. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THE SAME SITUATION AND TOYOTA IS DOING NOTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE OIL INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT CHECKED THE OIL AND NOTICED THAT THE OIL TANK WAS EMPTY. THE CONTACT ADDED FOUR QUARTS OF OIL AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED AN OIL CHANGE. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND TO BRING IT BACK AFTER 1,100 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AT 1,100 MILES. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT QUALIFY FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION SERVICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. HELLO, MY WIFE OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 WITH 108,000 MILES ON IT. IT RECEIVED AN OIL CHANGE AT 103K MILES, AND I JUST BROUGHT IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A SUSPICIOUS (AND LOUD) TOP END NOISE, AND THE ENGINE APPEARED TO BE EMPTY OF OIL WHEN THE DEALERSHIP CHECKED IT. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS, OTHER THAN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON AT PRECISELY THE RIGHT TIME TO INDICATE THE NEXT OIL CHANGE. ALSO NO PUDDLES OF OIL IN THE DRIVEWAY. THIS APPEARS TO MAKE ME (AT LEAST POTENTIALLY) AN INTERESTED PARTY IN THE TOYOTA OIL CONSUMPTION DEFECT CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT , APRIL LAX, ET AL. V. TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION, ET AL., CASE NO. 14-CV-01490, IN THE U.S. DISTRICT COURT FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN RECOMMEND A COURSE OF ACTION FOR ME AT THIS TIME.

IN ADDITION, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED NECK, BACK, AND HIP INJURIES THAT DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.

AT 51,000 MILES, THERE IS A HEAVY RATTLE IN THE FRONT END WHEN DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. AFTER REPLACING SEVERAL PARTS, LOCAL MECHANICS NOW TELL ME THAT THE RACK AND PINION STEERING GEAR NEEDS REPLACEMENT. THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT PROBLEM THAT IS THE SUBJECT OF TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN #T-SB-0319-08. I DO NOT FEEL ANYTHING ABNORMAL IN THE STEERING WHEEL, STEERING IS SMOOTH AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT NOTICEABLE DRIVING ON SMOOTH ROAD SURFACES. THE NOISE SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE WITH TIME, SO I AM CONCERNED THAT THE STEERING COULD FAIL ALTOGETHER.

I PURCHASED MY RAV4 USED ABOUT 12 MONTHS AGO. WITHIN THE PAST 3 MONTHS I'VE NOTICES PROBLEMS WITH MY STEERING. SLOW TURNS MAKE A CLUNKING SOUND WITH LOOSE MOVEMENT AND VIBRATION FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. INITIALLY I WAS TOLD IT WAS A BAD STRUT, WHICH I REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO GET A LITTLE WORSE BY THE DAY. IN CHECKING ONLINE I SEE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME NATURE, SOME RESULTING IN SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. IT APPEARS THAT THE RACK & PINION ASSEMBLY IS DEFECTIVE SINCE THE PROBLEM IS SO WIDESPREAD. I HAVE NOT SEEN A RECALL ON THIS AND WONDER WHY SINCE STEERING IS SO ESSENTIAL TO THE SAFE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. I WILL BE CONTACTING MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE DEPT. TO SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE.
MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 HAS SOME CLUNKY NOISE AROUND 46,000 MILES, BUT RECENTLY IT IS GETTING LOUDER. IT BECOMES A MAJOR CONCERN FOR MY FAMILY AND ME; THEREFORE, I HAVE BROUGHT IT IN TO A CAR REPAIR SHOP (FIRESTONE) TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED. THE RESULT CAME BACK TO BE THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND RACK. I CALLED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, BUT THEY SAID THAT IF I ONLY HAVE A EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY WILL REPAIR IT WITH FREE OF CHARGE AND THAT THE WARRANTY ONLY COVERS UP TO 36,000 MILES. IF NOT, THEY WILL CHARGE ANOTHER 130 SOME DOLLARS TO JUST DIAGNOSED AGAIN, BUT WILL WAIVE IT ONCE I DO THE REPAIR WITH THEM. AFTER DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, IT APPEARS THAT MORE PEOPLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. IT SEEMS TO BE A WIDER PROBLEM FOR THIS TYPE MODEL OF CAR. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND PRIOR TO THIS THERE WERE VARIOUS REPLACEMENT RECALL SUCH AS THE SUSPENSION, GAS PEDAL, AIR BAGS, AND ETC. HOW COME THIS ISSUE ISN'T ON THE RECALL LIST?
THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT, LOUD CLUNK SOUND FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS EVENTUALLY DETERMINED THAT A REAR STABILIZER LINK WAS CORRODED AND FAILED. PARTS ON BOTH SIDES WERE REPLACED BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER.
WHILE LOOKING INTO A REAR SUSPENSION PROBLEM, IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE REMEDY FOR RECALL 13V-383 WAS NOT PERFORMED PROPERLY ON ONE SIDE OF THE CAR. NOT ENOUGH EPOXY WAS USED ON ONE END OF THE SUSPENSION ARM, SO THERE IS A GAP IN THE EPOXY THAT EXTENDS TO THE ADJUSTING TUBE NUT. THAT SIDE IS ALSO OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER DID NOT REDO THE FIX AS REQUESTED. THE SERVICE MANAGER FORWARDED A PHOTO TO A DISTRICT REP TO MAKE A DECISION. OVER TWO WEEKS NOW WITHOUT A RESPONSE.
TOOK A TRIP FROM WA.STATE TO UTAH.HAD OIL CHANGED AND CHECKED BEFORE DEPARTING. CHECKED OIL IN UTAH AND SAW THAT OIL WAS WAY DOWN. BOUGHT MORE OIL FOR TRIP HOME.WE USED ABOUT 4-5 QRTS FOR ENTIRE TRIP. TOOK CAR TO TOYOTA DEALER TO DO OIL USAGE TEST. AFTER TEST DEALER SAID IT DID NOT USE ENOUGH OIL TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WE ARE VERY UNSATISFIED WITH THIS RESULT AND ARE WONDERING WHAT TO DO NOW. AFTER READING MANY BLOGS WE SEE THAT THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA IS NOT VERY EAGER TO FIX. FROM PARKED, AS THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, VEHICLE RESPONSE RESEMBLED HAVING PARKING BRAKE ON, AND A GRINDING NOISE EMANATED FROM THE REAR AXLE, CENTER. DROVE UNDER 20 MPH TO TOYOTA DEALER, WHICH DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE DRIVESHAFT/DIFFERENTIAL COUPLER, WITH METAL SHAVINGS AROUND THE DRIVESHAFT WHERE IT ENTERS THE DIFFERENTIAL COUPLER. TOLD THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AS THE REAR WHEELS COULD LOCK UP, AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. REPAIR COSTS: PARTS $1,300 PLUS TAX; LABOR - 3 HOURS ($400). TOYOTA ISSUED SERVICE BULLETING TBS 0080-13, AND SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT WAB 2190.
SINCE 2015 I WAS INFORMED BY THE ELGIN TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DURING MY OIL CHANGES THAT MY TOYOTA 2007 RAV4 HAD VIRTUALLY NO OIL. THE DEALERSHIP REPLENISHED IT AND 1000 MILES LATER THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON AND NO OIL WAS REGISTERED ON THE DIPSTICK. SEPT 2015 I WAS FINALLY TOLD ABOUT AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WHICH THEY SAID I PASSED YET OIL WOULD DISAPPEAR NOW WITHIN 800 MILES. THEY AGREED TO DO ANOTHER OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND DURING THAT TIME THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON SO I DROVE TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS IN ST. CHARLES, IL. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE CAR AND THE ELGIN DEALERSHIP SHOULD HAD NEVER PASSED MY CAR. I HAD TO DO A 3RD OIL CONSUMPTION TEST BECAUSE I WAS A FEW MILES OVER THE REQUIRED MILEAGE FOR THE 2ND TEST TO BE VALID. IN FEBRUARY 2016 I FAILED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND THEY PUT ME ON THE WAIT LIST AND TOLD ME THEY'RE OUT OF PARTS TO FIX THE CAR. DESPITE REPEATED PHONE CALLS TO SERVICE MANAGER AND OPEN CASE AT THE RECOMMENDED TOLL FREE # I HAVE NOT BEEN TAKING CARE OF. THE CAR CAN NOT DRIVE EVEN 400 MILES WITHOUT ME REFILLING THE OIL. THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND THE DISTRICT MANAGER DID NOT APPROVE A RENTAL CAR. I AM A PROFESSIONAL BUSINESSWOMAN AND HAVE TO GO UNDER MY VEHICLE EVERY 2 DAYS! I HAVE TO PURCHASED A 5 QUART JUG OF OIL EVERY TWO WEEKS AND WAS TOLD TO KEEP MY RECEIPTS BECAUSE THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME, WHICH AT THIS POINT I DON'T BELIEVE THEM BECAUSE THEY DON'T APPEARED TO HAVE ANY ATTENTION ON FIXING THE PROBLEM. I'M WORRIED MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION WILL BLOW ITS ENGINE WHICH IS WHAT TOYOTA PROBABLY WANTS TO HAPPEN SO THEY CAN BLAME ME AND THAT'S ONE LESS PERSON THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH. THE SUN VISOR LOST THE ABILITY TO SHADE THE SUN CAUSING A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION WHEN DRIVING INTO THE SUN. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS MODEL.
OUR 2007 RAV4 WAS SERVICED AT A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER ON 8/11/2015. THE REAR ALIGNMENT WAS FOUND TO BE OUTSIDE OF THE SPECIFIED RANGE. THE REAR SUSPENSION ARMS (TIE RODS) WERE INSPECTED AND THE ALIGNMENT WAS ADJUSTED LAST YEAR AS PART OF RECALL 13V-383. AN EPOXY WAS APPLIED TO MAKE THESE PARTS NON-ADJUSTABLE AND SEAL THEM TO PREVENT CORROSION THAT HAS LED TO PART FAILURES. BOTH REAR TIE RODS ON OUR VEHICLE HAD ACTUALLY BEEN REPLACED IN JANUARY 2012 AFTER SUCH A FAILURE CAUSED US TO CRASH. CORRECTING THE REAR ALIGNMENT NOW REQUIRES REPLACING THESE PARTS AGAIN AND RE-APPLYING THE EPOXY FROM RECALL 13V-383, AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. I WAS QUOTED $750 + TAX ($660 ON TOP OF THE USUAL $90 ALIGNMENT CHARGE). WE HAVE NOT YET HAD THIS FIXED. I WROTE TO DANIEL C. SMITH OF NHTSA IN JUNE TO POINT OUT THIS PROBLEM BASED ON OTHER REPORTS, BEFORE REALIZING OUR VEHICLE WOULD HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. IF THE EPOXY DOES NOT PREVENT THE PART FROM ADJUSTING OUTSIDE OF SPECS, HOW WELL IS IT SEALING TO PREVENT CORROSION? NHTSA INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA KNOWS OF 19 CONTINUED FAILURES IN VEHICLES THAT HAD REMEDY 13V-383 APPLIED (THE SECOND REMEDY FOR THIS SAFETY DEFECT). 12 REPORTS WERE FOR COMPLETE TIE ROD SEPARATION. TOYOTA SHOULD ALSO TRACK THESE ALIGNMENT CHANGES AS A POTENTIAL PRECURSOR TO FAILURES.

I AM NOW SEEKING FREE LEGAL CONSULTATION TO SUCCESSFULLY RESOLVE THIS MATTER TO RECOUP THE PURCHASE PRICE, ALL SUBSEQUENT REPAIRS, LEGAL FEES, AND DAMAGES FOR BEING STRANDED ON THE HIGHWAY DURING A LONG DISTANCE VACATION MILES FROM HOME. RECEIVED NOTICE FROM TOYOTA REGARDING WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ZE7 AFTER ENGINE FAILED THAT RAV 4 HAD AN EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. ATTACHED ARE PICTURES OF MELTED ENGINE PARTS OF AN ENGINE THAT HAD REGULAR OIL CHANGES.
JUST GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AND WAS DRIVING ON CITY STREETS.STARTED HEARING SOME CREAKING NOISE, AND THEN A FEW CLUNKS AND A BANG/POP AS I WAS GOING AROUND A CORNER AT ABOUT 3-5MPH I PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY IN FRONT OF ME. I SEE MY RIGHT REAR TIRE HAS CAVED IN AND IS RUBBING AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL WELL. AFTER JACKING UP THE CAR AND TAKING THE TIRE OFF I SEE THE ENTIRE BRAKE ASSEMBLY IS ROTATED IN, AND THE BOLTS HOLDING IT TO THE REAR SUSPENSION ARE BENT OUT OF PLACE. PERHAPS THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE BAND-AID EPOXY FIX FOR THE TOYOTA REAR SUSPENSION RECALL. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE!
