CERTAIN CARS FROM TOYOTA HAVE A KNOW EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. MY CAR IS ONE OF THEM. MY CAR, WHILE OLDER, HAS LESS THAN 56K MILES ON IT. LAST YEAR, THE MILEAGE DROPPED PRECIPITOUSLY-- BY 10 MPG, IN FACT. SINCE THEN, MY LOW OIL LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON IN LESS THAN 3,000 MILES. TOYOTA WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE REDEFINED WHAT IT MEANS TO BURN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL-- 1 QUART EVERY 1200 MILES ISN'T A PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THEM. THOUSANDS OF TOYOTA OWNERS NOW FIND THEMSELVES WITH CARS THAT BURN OIL, HAVE REDUCED MPG, AND NO RECOURSE WITH TOYOTA. MY CAR HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER 5 TIMES SINCE LAST YEAR-- ALL BECAUSE OF THE OIL ISSUE. THIS CAR IS NOT WHAT I BOUGHT. I BOUGHT A CAR THAT WAS ECONOMICAL, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, AND GOT GOOD MILEAGE. TOYOTA SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REDEFINE WHAT ACCEPTABLE OIL CONSUMPTION IS! I NOW FIND MYSELF IN THE UNFORTUNATE SITUATION OF HAVING TO CARRY A QUART OF OIL WITH ME EVERYWHERE I GO BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHEN MY CAR WILL RUN OUT OF OIL. OF COURSE, I'M NOW STOPPING EVERY 190 MILES OR SO TO PUT GAS IN THE CAR BECAUSE OF BAD MILEAGE (USED TO BE AROUND 350 MILES). WHY IS NTSA LETTING THIS GO?
DRIVING 55 MPG AROUND CURVE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC STEERING LOCKED UP HARDLY ABLE TO PULL.OFF SIDE OF ROAD. HAPPENED AGAIN TODAY JULY 25 2015 GOING 60 DOWN BUSY HEY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND STEERING FROZE HAD TO GET OF TO THE SIDE AND RESTART THEN IT WAS ABLE TO STEER BUT BATTERY.LIGHT FLICKERS HA D BATTERY LREPLACED DAY BEFORE.
I WAS DRIVING AT 25MPH WHEN THE RED BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT WITH MUCH DIFFICULTY. I SHUT THE CAR OFF TO GO INTO A STORE TO LET THEM KNOW I WAS GOING TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED AND WENT BACK TO MY CAR AGAIN TO RESTART. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. HAD I NOT BEEN ON A HIGHWAY GOING 55 I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT SINCE I HAD A DIFFICULT TIME TURNING THE WHEEL AT ALL.
I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ON SIDE STREET AND I HEARD A LOUD THUMP (ALMOST LIKE I WENT OVER SOMETHING) MY CAR STOPPED GOING FORWARD OR BACKWARDS. I COULD NOT USE THE GEARS. I HAD NO WARNING. THE CAR JUST STOPPED MOVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY COMPLAINT. I DON'T KNOW IF TOYOTA DID NOT SERVICE THE CAR CORRECTLY. I AM NOT TOLD THE PRICE WILL BE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 2,500-4,500 CAR WAS TOWED AND I WAS TOLD IT NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION. I HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THE CAR AND SERVICED IT MOSTLY AT THE TOYOTA DEALER. *TR
ENGINE HESITATES/STUMBLES AND RPM NEEDLE FLUCTUATES AT SPEEDS UNDER 60MPH
THE CAR FAILED TO START, THE BATTERY WAS EXTREMELY HOT AND HAD NOT WATER IN IT. CHANGED THE BATTERY, THE CAR STARTED PROPERLY; HOWEVER, ONCE SET TO DRIVE IT HESITATED A BIT, AS IF IT WERE CHOCKING FOR LACK OF GAS BUT IT HAD GAS. DROVE ON AND AT ABOUT SPEED OF 40 MPH STEERING BECAME HARD TO HANDLE, AC AND ENGINE CUT OFF. RESTARTED IT DROVE BACK HOME... JUST MADE THE LAST PAYMENT ON THE CAR, CAR WAS REGULARLY SERVICED AT THE DEALER.
DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY IN CLOSED POSITION AT ANY TIME. IT IS HANGING DOWN ABOUT 45 DEGREES FROM THE ROOF HEADLINER, PARTIALLY BLOCKING THE DRIVER'S VIEW AND PRESENTING AN OBVIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. IN ADDITION, AN INJURY HAZARD EXISTS IN THE EVENT OF A FRONT END CRASH, SINCE THE DRIVER'S HEAD WILL IMPACT THE SUN VISOR FIRST. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS OTHER REPORTS OF THIS DESIGN FLAW.
THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR HAS BEGUN TO DROOP WHEN PLACED IN THE UP (TOUCHING THE ROOF) POSITION OR IN THE DOWN (BLOCKING THE SUN). I NOTICED THIS IN JUNE 2015 AND HAS SIGNIFICANTLY GOTTEN WORSE. THERE WAS NO ONE INCIDENT THAT CAUSED THE VISOR TO FALL AND THIS SEEMS TO BE MORE THAN JUST A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE. THERE IS NO WAY TO MANUALLY TIGHTEN THE VISOR AND IT NOW FALLS DOWN WHENEVER I BRAKE, TURN OR STOP THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN HIT IN THE HEAD WHEN LEANING FORWARD TO LOOK IN MY BLIND SPOT WHEN MERGING AND HIGH SPEEDS AND THE VISOR FALLING SCARED ME. TOYOTA KNOWS THAT THIS IS AN DESIGN FLAW WITH 2006-12 RAV4S, AS PER THE DEALERSHIPS I SPOKE WITH AND WITH CUSTOMER CARE. BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE PART. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY STATED THE ONLY WAY THEY WILL DO A RECALL IS IF ENOUGH CUSTOMERS COMPLAIN TO NHSTA ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND DEFECTIVE VISORS SHOULD BE REPLACED BY TOYOTA.
SUN VISOR IS CAUSING HEAD INJURIES, THIS DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR KEEP DROPPING AT EYE LEVEL AND HIT ON THE HEAD WHILE WE ARE DRIVING DUE TO DEFECTIVE MECHANISM AND LOCKING PARTS WITHIN THE SUN VISOR THIS IS HAPPENING FOR LAST 4 YEARS. KINDLY HAVE MANUFACTURE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE AND HAVE THEM REPLACE THIS SUN VISOR.
DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY IN POSITION, DROPPED DOWN AND BLOCKED VIEW OF ON COMING TRAFFIC
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A TURN, THE POWER STEERING SEIZED AND SEVERAL WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE BATTERY AND SENSORS WERE CHANGED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 79,800.
ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, I WAS COMING TO A STOP WHEN MY FOOT BOTH THE GAS PEDAL AND THE BRAKE AT THE SAME TIME. THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD A FEW FEET, BUT COULD OF LUNGED ME INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 40 YEARS NUMEROUS VEHICLES, BUT THIS IS ONLY CAR THAT I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. COULD YOU PLEASE ADDRESS IT BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED?
DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR HANGS LOOSELY DOWN IN FRONT OF DRIVER. HAVE HAD TWO CLOSE CALLS WITH STAYING ON ROAD WHILE TRYING TO DEAL WITH DEFECTIVE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED UNDER A MANUFACTURER RECALL WHERE ALL FOUR TIRES WERE ALIGNED. THE DEALER USED AN EPOXY RESIN ON THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE NEAR THE TIE ROD ASSEMBLIES AND THE FRAMING. MONTHS LATER, AFTER THE MANUFACTURER RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO RECEIVE AN ALIGNMENT AND TWO INDEPENDENT MECHANICS STATED THAT THE EPOXY PREVENTED THE TIRES FROM RECEIVING A REAR ALIGNMENT. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT ONLY THE FRONT ALIGNMENT COULD BE PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE DEALER REFUSED TO REMEDY THE REMOVAL OF THE EPOXY RESIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION RELATING TO TOYOTA'S WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION - ZE7. I KNEW MY ENGINE CONSUMED OIL CHRONICALLY SINCE AT LEAST 75,000 MILES SO WAS NOT SURPRISED WHEN THIS WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT CAME IN THE MAIL. HOWEVER, WHEN I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET TESTED, THEY SAID IT PASSED THE TEST (THIS WAS IN APRIL 2015 AT ABOUT 135,000 MILES). I WAS FRUSTRATED AND SHOCKED. I THOUGHT I WAS STUCK WITH NO OTHER OPTIONS. RECENTLY, WHEN ADDING OIL I NOTICED I WENT THROUGH 2-2.5 QUARTS IN A WEEK. THAT'S WHEN I INSISTED ON ANOTHER OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. IT FAILED THIS TIME, BUT ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, IT WAS TOO LATE FOR THEM TO COVER AS I WAS OVER THE TERM OF 150,000 MILES (CASE #1803133073). I ASKED FOR OTHER ALTERNATIVES SINCE I BELIEVED THE ORIGINAL TEST TO BE FLAWED (ALLOWING FOR 1-1.5 QUARTS OF OIL CONSUMPTION WHEN THE OWNER'S MANUAL RECOMMENDS OIL CHANGES AT 5,000 MILES. SINCE THE CAR ONLY HOLDS JUST OVER 4.5 QUARTS OF OIL, NO OIL WOULD BE LEFT AT OVER 4,000 MILES). AT THE RATE OF CONSUMPTION, I WORRY ABOUT EXCESSIVE ENGINE HEAT LEADING TO FIRES AND OBVIOUSLY EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE ENGINE. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A 'WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT' AND INSTEAD A RECALL AS THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION IN THE 2AZ-FE TOYOTA ENGINE IS WELL DOCUMENTED AS A DESIGN FLAW OR ENGINEERING ERROR WITH THE PISTON RINGS NOT BEING LARGE ENOUGH TO DRAIN OIL OR NOT HAVING ENOUGH HOLES, TRAPPING THE OIL AND CAUSING OIL BURNING. TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR POOR ENGINE DESIGN AND ANY SAFETY ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH IT. AT A MINIMUM THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT SHOULD BE EXTENDED FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED MY OIL LIGHT COMING ON, I PULLED OVER TO CHECK KNOWING I JUST RECENTLY HAD THE OIL CHANGE ABOUT A MONTH AGO BUT I DO DRIVE ALOT, WHEN I CHECKED MY DIPSTICK I FOUND NO OIL ON IT. MARCH 27, 2015 AT 2:40 PM. SUNNY, 38, CLEAR ROAD CONDITIONS. EXITING OFF US 43 AND SOUTH ONTO US 41 AT APPROX. 40 TO 45 MPH. THE CAR SUDDENLY JERKED TO LEFT, THEN SWERVED TO THE RIGHT. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS BUT DID NOT BRAKE. STEERING WAS DIFFICULT BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. THE CAR FELT(ALTHOUGHI AM NOT SURE) AS THOUGH IT WENT UP ON TWO WHEELS EACH TIME IT SWERVED TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. THE CAR CAME TO A STOP AND I WAS ABLE TO MOVE IT TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I LOOKED BENEATH THE CAR AND SAW AN APPROXIMATELY 10 INCH ROD WITH THE STICKER THAT SAID "RECALL SAFETY". I TOOK A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE BROKEN PART, CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I BELIEVE IF I HAD BEEN GOING 65 MILES PER HOUR I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO HAVE ANY CONTROL AND MAY HAVE ROLLED OVER INJURING, OR WORSE MYSELF AND OTHERS. *TR
MY CAR HAS HAD EVERY OIL CHANGE AND CHECK UP AS PRESCRIBED. I WAS ABOUT 500 MILES AWAY FROM NEXT REQUIRED OIL CHANGE. I NOTICED WHEN I STEPPED ON BRAKE THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. PULLED INTO GAS STATION AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE CAR. THEY ADDED 3 QUARTS OF OIL. I CALLED TOYOTA AND BROUGHT CAR IN. THEY ADDED 4/5 QUARTS OF OIL, AND TAPPED UP EVERYTHING INCLUDING DIP STICK SO I COULD NOT CHECK THE OIL. TOLD ME I HAD TO DRIVE 1,100 TO 1,300 MILES AND THEN COME BACK. I WAS QUITE UPSET, BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO KNOW IF OIL WAS LEAKING AGAIN, SINCE THEY TAPED THE DIP STICK. CALLED CORPORATE WAS TOLD TO TAKE TAPE OFF DIP STICK. HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE 1,100 MILES BUT OIL IS A LITTLE BELOW THE 2 DOTS. I CALLED TOYOTA, TOLD THEM I HAD TO BE IN RALEIGH FOR WORK AND ASKED THEM TO JUST FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID I HAD 2 CHOICES, DELAY MY EMPLOYMENT UNTIL I HIT THE 1,100 MILES FOR A RE CHECK OR LEAVE FOR RALEIGH AND IF OIL LIGHT COMES ON HAVE CAR TOWED TO TOYOTA. REALLY, I AM 62 AND TRAVELING WITH 2 BIRDS IN THE HEAT OF THE SUMMER. THEY TOLD ME IF I GET TO 1,100 MILES AND OIL IS LOW IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY WILL ADD MORE OIL SO I CAN GET TO RALEIGH AND THEY WILL CALL TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS. REALLY? I HAVE TO LEAVE FOR RALEIGH THE 19TH OF MAY THANKS
HEARD "POP" SOUNDS FROM REAR WHILE DRIVING CAR. STOPPED TO EXAMINE CAR BUT DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING UNUSUAL. RESUMED DRIVING AND SHORTLY AFTERWARDS THERE WAS A LOUD POP AND IMMEDIATELY THE CAR BEGAN SWERVING AS IF IT WERE ON A SKATING RINK - VERY SCARY. MANAGED TO GET CONTROL OF THE CAR AND CAME TO A STOP. REAR RIGHT WHEEL WAS INCLINED TOWARDS THE SIDEWALL OF THE CAR, NO IDEA WHAT HAD CAUSED IT TO HAPPEN. DROVE VERY SLOWLY TO AUTO MECHANIC JUST 1 BLOCK AWAY, SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE AFFECTED AREA. CAR WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING A BROKEN RIGHT REAR TIRE ROD AND THE AFFECTED TIRE HAD BEEN STRIPPED SINCE IT HAD BEEN LEANING AGAINST THE SIDEWALL. THIS OCCURRED DESPITE HAVING MADE MULTIPLE VISITS TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN FEBRUARY, 2014 FOR RELATED RECALLS AND ACTION TAKEN TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT. OBVIOUSLY, ACTION TAKEN BY DEALERSHIP WAS INSUFFICIENT TO PREVENT THIS POSSIBLE DEADLY SITUATION FROM OCCURRING. *TR
TRANSMISSION STARTED TO WHINE,. BEARINGS. *TR
MY VEHICLE HAS AN OIL CONSUMPTION RECALL. THE VEHICLE BURNS OIL THUS A RECALL TO CONDUCT TESTING. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE TO TEST THE OIL CONSUMPTION. HOWEVER, THEY SCREWED THE TEST RESULTS BY OVERFILLING THE OIL TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THERE WAS NO OIL BURNING ONCE THE TEST WAS COMPLETED. THEY WANTED ME TO DRIVE BETWEEN 1200-1400 MILES THEN LOOK AT THE DIP STICK. BUT THEY OVERFILLED THE OIL ON PURPOSE TO EFFECT THE RESULTS. *TR
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION: CHECKING THE OIL ON THIS 4 CYLINDER ENGINE SHOWED THAT IT WAS DOWN 1 1/2 QUARTS IN ONLY 1,500 MILES. THE LOCAL DEALER FOUND NO OIL LEAKS. *TR
I STARTED AN EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WITH WESTCHESTER TOYOTA ON 2-27-15 AND FAILED ON 4-7-15. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT I AM A WAITING LIST AND IT IS UNKNOWN WHEN MY ENGINE WILL B OVERHAULED. MY CURRENT RATE OF OIL CONSUMPTION IS 10 QUARTS OF OIL FOR 3000 MILES AND THIS HAS STEADILY INCREASED. MY EXHAUST IS COATED IN BURNT OIL AND I FEAR THE ENGINE WILL SEIZE AT SOME POINT. YET I AM ON A WAITING LIST FOR OVER A YEAR WITH NO REPAIR DATE IN SITE.
THE DEALER SAID THAT THE SENSORS BEHIND MY BREAKS WERE DEFECTIVE. MY ABS AND CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT WORK. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR. CAN YOU HELP. THE DEAL SAID IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE I CAN USE MY BRAKES THE OLD FASHION WAY BY PUMPING THEM. ABS DOES NOT WORK. WHAT CAN I DO. TOYOTA SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE RAVE4. *TR
OIL BURNING RECALL. MY CAR RAV4 BURNS OIL AT LEAST ONE QUART PER 1200 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO REPLACE ANY PART DUE TO THE 1200 MILES TEST DRIVING. TOYOTA SENT ME AN ENHANCEMENT WARRANTY NOTICE ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF OIL BURNING. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ME. WE PAID SO MUCH YET WHAT WE GET IS A DEFECT ENGINE IN A NEW RAV4. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL AND TOYOTA IS RESPONSIBLE TO FIX THE RINGS AND OTHER PARTS THAT ARE REQUIRED TO REPLACE IN ORDER TO STOP THE PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR BAG NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE DRIVERS SIDE HEATED LEATHER SEATS BECOME EXCESSIVELY HOT AND THEY HAVE TO BE SHUT OFF WHILE IN USE. AFRAID OF FIRE- OR ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE OIL WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED BEFORE THE REGULAR MAINTENANCE OIL CHANGE TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED BY THE MECHANIC THAT THEY WERE CONDUCTING AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THE MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THERE MAY BE AN ISSUE WITH THE PISTONS AND THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED TO CHECK THE OIL EVERY WEEK TO MAKE SURE IT WAS TOPPED OFF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,600.
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR SUDDENLY LOSES ALL ELECTRICITY, ALL THE LIGHTS, EVERY LIGHT INDICATOR, THE RADIO ARE OFF. THE ENGINE STOPS RUNNING AND THE CAR STOPS IMMEDIATELY. TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC TO TAKE A LOOK BUT HE COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. ALSO TOOK IT TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THE TECHNICIAN INSPECTED IT AND RAN A DIAGNOSTICS TEST BUT COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM EITHER.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION THIS IS MY SECOND COMPLAINT ON THIS ISSUE BECAUSE AFTER FINALLY FINDING A BETTER DEALER (TOWNE TOYOTA, LEDGEWOOD NJ BAD, TOYOTA OF MORRISTOWN GOOD) I HAD THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST PERFORMED. I FAILED (DUH, BEEN ADDING EXTRA OIL BETWEEN CHANGES FOR TWO YEARS WITH NO LEAKS ON THE DRIVEWAY). I WAS A MONTH OUT OF "EXTENDED COVERAGE" FOR VEHICLES 10 YEARS FROM DATE OF FIRST USE. FRIENDLY DEALER SAID TO CALL HQ AND PLEAD MY CASE. I DID AND AFTER SOME FRIENDLY CUST SERV REP, WAS STILL TOLD SOL. I HOPE SOMEONE GETS A CLASS ACTION GOING. I WILL BE GETTING THIS REPAIRED BY MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND WILL NEVER BUY TOYOTA AGAIN. (EVEN MY BRZ SICKENS ME A BIT SINCE TOYOTA HAD A HAND IN IT).

THEIR SOLUTION IS TO BUY NEW VISORS. THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT TO TIGHTEN IT MYSELF. IT IS UNSAFE AND $250 FOR NEW VISORS. FROM REPORTS ON THE WEB, MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE CREATING AN UNSAFE VEHICLE. *TR
OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM MALFUNCTION (ECU). TOYOTA IS REFUSING TO COVER THE REPAIR SINCE THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. WAS ADVISED AT THE DEALERSHIP (KENDALL TOYOTA) THAT THIS MALFUNCTION WILL PREVENT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG FROM DEPLOYMENT IN EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. THE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION IS NOT SPECIFICALLY A WEAR N TEAR ITEM AND I FIRMLY BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE COVERED BY TOYOTA. RAV 4 HAS HAD MULTIPLE RECALLS BUT NONE FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

IN DEC 2014 MY CAR EXHAUST WAS LOUDER THAN USUAL, THE REPAIR SHOP NOTED THAT THE FRONT CENTER CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS RUSTED AND PERFORATED AND REPLACE IT AT AT COST OF $1844.11. IN JAN 2017 TOYOTA ISSUED SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN G0Y REGARDING THIS EXACT ISSUE, CLAIMING IT WILL EITHER FIX RUSTED SYSTEMS OR REIMBURSE THOSE WHOSE SYSTEMS WERE ALREADY RUSTED AND REPLACED. I SUBMITTED MY REQUEST FOR REIMBURSEMENT, RESPONDED FOR A REQUEST FOR MORE PAPERWORK, AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DENIED WITHOUT EXPLANATION. TODAY WHEN I CALLED FOR MORE INFO, I WAS TOLD THAT THE DECISION CANNOT BE APPEALED (NFI). SHE FINALLY SAID THAT THE REPAIR SHOP NOTE DID NOT MENTION RUST. OTHER VEHICLES HAVE A GENERALLY STRAIGHT STEERING SHAFT IN LINE WITH THE STEERING WHEEL AXIS AND NO ABRUPT CHANGES IN ALIGNMENT. THERE APPEARS TO BE SIGNIFICANT DISCUSSIONS ON TOYOTA RELATED WEBSITES OF SIMILAR RAV4 STEERING SHAFT PROBLEMS. BOUGHT THE CAR WITH 86,226 MILES ON IT. CHECKED THE OIL AT 91,103 AND FOUND ONLY A HALF A QUART OF OIL IN THE PAN. CHANGED THE OIL AT THAT TIME AND THEN HAD TO ADD ANOTHER QUART AT 92328. ENGINE IS BURNING WAY TOO MUCH OIL. *TR

THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO INSTALL REAR TOW ADJUSTMENTS ON BOTH REAR SIDES OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER A REAR SUSPENSION RECALL IN AUGUST OF 2014; HOWEVER, THE REMEDY FAILED. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATED THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO NOT HAVE A REAR END ALIGNMENT AND CAUSED UNUSUAL WEAR AND TEAR ON THE REAR TIRES. SINCE SEPTEMBER OF 2016, THE CONTACT HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR TIRES THREE TIMES. THE RECALL DETAILS WERE NOT PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 160,000.

TOYOTA ALSO INFORMED THAT WATER PUMP IS FAILING. THROUGH INTERNET RESEARCH, THESE ARE EXTREMELY COMMON ISSUES THAT SHOULD BE RESOLVED BY TOYOTA AND PEOPLE SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR SUCH AN EXTENSIVE PROBLEM. *TR
FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM ON 11/10/2014 WHEN APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT. THE RAV4 TOOK LONGER THAN NORMAL TO COME TO A STOP WITH GREATER FORCE REQUIRED TO STOP. ONCE FULLY STOPPED, THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING WITH LOW RPM'S (~500) AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON ALONG WITH VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS. WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME, BUT EXPERIENCED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AT EVERY STOP LIGHT / STOP SIGN. CONTACTED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN TUCSON IMMEDIATELY AND SCHEDULED EMERGENCY SERVICE FOR THE NEXT MORNING. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM WITH TWO ERROR CODES (P0171 AND P0174 - LEAN AIR/FUEL MIX). WAS TOLD THEY SUSPECTED A BAD TANK OF GAS. TOYOTA ADDRESSED ONE OPEN RECALL (SERVICE CAMPAIGN BST - REFLASH BRAKE CONTROL COMPUTER) ON MY VEHICLE BUT DID NOT INVESTIGATE THE ERROR CODES, ONLY CLEARED THEM. THE FOLLOWING DAY WHILE DRIVING HOME, THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED. ALMOST NO BRAKE PRESSURE AND BARELY ABLE TO STOP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC, AND TRAC LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATED AGAIN. LOW IDLE SPEED AS WELL. CONTACTED A DIFFERENT LOCAL MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION. WAS INFORMED THE BRAKE BOOSTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO DAMAGE IN THE DIAPHRAGM CAUSING LOSS OF VACUUM PRESSURE (WHICH HELPED EXPLAIN THE TWO ERROR CODES RELATED TO LEAN AIR/FUEL MIX). TOTAL REPAIR BILL OVER $1000. JUST LUCKY NOBODY WAS INJURED DUE TO FAILING BRAKE SYSTEM ON TOYOTA'S PART. *TR

BUT BESIDE THAT AT TIMES ENGINES FEELS LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO STOP AND IDLE FALLS BELOW 400 RPM SHAKING OR VIBRATING THE WHOLE CAR FOR GOOD 3-5 SECOND AND THEN SPIKES BACK UP JUST ENOUGH TO SLOW DOWN THAT VIBRATION A BIT. AT THIS POINT MY FOOT IS STILL ON BRAKE. NO CHECK ENGINE OR ANY OTHER LIGHTS ON. *TR

THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING; HOWEVER, WHEN RESEARCHED ONLINE THERE IS A PENDING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST TOYOTA AND THERE WAS ALSO A SERVICE BULLETIN IN 2011 ADVISING THE DEALERSHIPS TO REMEDY PROBLEM. AT THAT TIME MY CAR WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN UNDER WARRANTY BUT SINCE IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO COVER IT. THEY ESTIMATE COST BETWEEN $4-6000. *TR
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. ENGINE LOCKED. AFTER CONTACTING TOYOTA MAIN HOTLINE TO ALERT THEM OF THE PROBLEM. THEY PROVIDED ME WITH INFORMATION TO TEST THE OLI CONSUMPTION AND TO TAKE THE RESULTS TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. AFTER COMPLETING INITIAL TESTING, THE DEALERHSHIP INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS NOT BURNING OIL. THE VEHICLE STILL WAS BURNING OLL. TOYOTA SUBSEQUENTLY ISSUED A NOTICE THAT THE VEHICLES WERE BURNING OIL AND THAT THEY WOULD SEND A PART TO THE DEALERSHIPS TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP THEN INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE WAITING ON THE PARTS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE PARTS NEVER ARRIVED AND NOW MY ENGINE HAS LOCKED DUE TO INSUFFICIENT OIL. I WANT TO BE MADE WHOLE.
THE VISOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DOES NOT STAY UP AND COMES DOWN DURING DRIVING AND CREATES A SAFETY HAZARD WHERE IT BLOCKS OUR VIEW WHEN DRIVING. THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET OF THIS ISSUE WITH SEVERAL TOYOTA MODELS (RAV4, HIGHLANDER ETC.), YET TOYOTA HAS 'NOT' ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS SERIOUS DEFECT AND SAFETY ISSUE! I HAVE ALREADY HAD TO TAKE MY TOYOTA IN FOR 4-5 RECALLS ON OTHER ISSUES SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2007! TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS VISOR ISSUE IMMEDIATELY! *TR
