2011 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO CAR HACKING ISSUE. *LD
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ON MY VEHICLE FOR THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH SCOTT CLARK TOYOTA ON 13000 E INDEPENDENCE BLVD, MATTHEWS, NC 28105. THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT DO THE RECALL UNLESS I PAID THEM OVER $400 TO REPLACE ANOTHER PART IN THE WIPERS. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLES WIPERS AND TOLD I DID NOT NEED THE PART REPLACED JUST DO THE RECALL. THEY REFUSED. SO, TO DATE MY RECALL HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THEY GAVE ME NO PAPERWORK TO CORROBORATE MY CLAIM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE IN A PARKING AREA APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY SURGED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE RPMS RACED AND THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE CRASHED INTO TWO OTHER VEHICLES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED WHIPLASH DUE TO THE FAILURE, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR CENTER TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES AND FURTHER INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE TO DETERMINE IF THEY MAY BE ABLE TO INVESTIGATE THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000.
AT APPROXIMATELY 67,000 MILES (OR LIKELY MUCH SOONER), THIS 4WD VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LEAKING SEAL IN THE LEFT REAR DIFFERENTIAL/AXLE. THE LEAK WAS DISCOVERED BY THE DEALER DURING A RECENT VISIT TO HANDLE SEVERAL OUTSTANDING RECALL ISSUES. FROM DOING EXTENSIVE ONLINE RESEARCH, THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD AND COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 4WD RAV4S. IT IS A VERY COSTLY REPAIR (AS MUCH AS $800 AT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER), SO I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT THE NTSB INVESTIGATE THE RAV4 REAR DIFFERENTIAL SEAL LEAKS FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL OR TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. PLEASE NOTE THAT TOYOTA ALREADY ISSUED A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION (Z4F) WHICH EXTENDS THE NEW VEHICLE LIMITED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY FOR A REAR DIFFERENTIAL COUPLING ISSUE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT SHOULD EXTEND TO THE REAR AXLE SEALS AS WELL. FAILURE OF THE REAR SEAL(S) CAN OF COURSE LEAD TO TOTAL FAILURE OF THE POWERTRAIN AND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. I HAVE ATTACHED A PHOTO SHOWING THE LEAKING LEFT REAR AXLE SEAL.

WE RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL NOTICES NHTSA 16V-096 AND 15V-577 STATING WE WILL BE NOTIFIED WHEN A REMEDY IS AVAILABLE. I HAVE CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD I WOULD BE CONTACTED WHEN THE PARTS CAME IN (THEY HAD TO BE ORDERED). I HAVE CONTACTED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER WHO SAID THAT WOULD CHECK INTO THE MATTER AS TOO MUCH TIME HAS ELAPSED IN THIS REPAIR PROCESS AND THEY WOULD ALSO CONTACT ME. NEITHER THE DEALER OR CORPORATE HAS FOLLOWED TROUGH WITH THE REPAIR PARTS OR REPAIRS. I STILL CANNOT GET THE RECALLED REPAIRS COMPLETED. I DON'T TRUST CORPORATE TOYOTA OR THEIR DEALERSHIP IN THEIR HANDLING OF THESE RECALLS. I DEMAND THAT NHYSA INVESTIGATE AND REPORT TO ME THEIR FINDINGS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AT 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE INDEPENDENTLY ALTHOUGH THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS BEING DEPRESSED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO PARK TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000.

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED WHILE A PASSENGER WAS SEATED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V096000 (SEAT BELTS). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000.

HERB CHAMBERS TOYOTA OF BOSTON 32 BRIGHTON AVENUE, BOSTON, MA 02134 (617) 787-1700 REFUSES TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO REMEDY THIS RECALL NOTICE. I CALLED TO REQUEST IT AND THEY TRANSFERRED ME TO SALES. AS SOON AS I SAID I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A NEW VEHICLE AND SAID I WANTED TO SCHEDULE SERVICE FOR A RECALL REMEDY, THEY DISCONNECTED ME. WHEN I CALLED BACK, I HAD TO DESCRIBE AND RE-DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM OVER AND OVER AND THEY KEPT TRANSFERRING ME AROUND TO VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS, STATING THEY THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REMEDY SERVICE. THEY KEPT INSISTING ON TRANSFERRING ME TO SALES, WHERE AGAIN THEY TRIED TO SELL ME A NEW VEHICLE AND DISCONNECTED ME WHEN I SAID I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A NEW VEHICLE.

REMEDY FOR WINDSHIELD WIPER ISSUE IS NOT BEING FIXED IN A TIMELY MANNER. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST A YEAR AND STILL NO REMEDY. THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE RAINIEST SUMMERS EVEN IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA WITH FLOODS AND RECORD RAINS AND I DON'T TRUST MY WIPERS ANYMORE BECAUSE THE RECALL SAYS THEY COULD STOP WORKING AT ANY TIME. I DON'T THINK THAT TOYOTA UNDERSTANDS THAT ARIZONA GETS RAIN--AND LOTS OF IT--AND THINGS RUST. NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO MY WIPERS YET BUT IT'S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR SINCE THE RECALL AND NOTHING. I TOOK CAR TWICE AND NOBODY BEEN ABLE TO HELP 'ME EVERTIME THEY TELL ME TO COME BACK BECAUSE THEY DONT THE EQUIMENT OR THEY DONT HAVE TIME.. THIS HAPPEND AT A ROCKVILLE/GAITHERBURG LOCATION.

I RECEIVED A LETTER SAYING THAT I HAD A RECALL ON THE REAR OUTWARD SEAT BELT. I CALLED ON 7/25/16 AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE A REMEDY TO THE PROBLEM. I TOLD THE REP THAT THE LETTER SOUNDED LIKE THEY HAD A SOLUTION "DEALER WILL INSTALL PLASTIC COVERS OVER THE METAL SEAT FRAME." THE REP INFORMED ME THAT ALTHOUGH A SOLUTION WAS FOUND, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PART. I CALLED ON 8/10/16 AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PARTS ARE NOT IN. I CALLED ON 10/6/16..SAME THING...PARTS ARE NOT IN. NOT SURE WHY IT TAKES 3 MONTHS TO GET THIS PART. I THINK MY CAR ALSO HAS AN ISSUE WITH THE WIPER MOTOR AND I NEVER HEARD BACK REGARDING THAT EITHER.

I WAS NOTIFIED IN 2013 OF THREE (3) RECALLS NOTHNG HAS BEEN DONE TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER AND THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID "THERE IS NOT SAFETY PROBLEM AND I HAVE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE AND NORTHING IS WRONG' I FORCED THE ISSUE AND THEY DID AN "INTERIM" FIX. IS NOT THREE YEARS A LONG TIME FOR THEM TO BE GETTING THE PARTS AS THAT IS THE EXCUSE I WAS GIVEN BY THE SERVICE MANAGER.
I HAVE A DEFECTIVE VVT-I GEAR ON MY 2011 RAV4. UPON RESEARCHING THE DIAGNOSIS FROM MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER (DAVID MAUS TOYOTA), I DISCOVERED THAT TOYOTA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS ENGINEERING FLAW SINCE 2010 AND HAD PUT OUT A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (T-SB-0146-10) SO THAT DEALERSHIPS WOULD KNOW HOW TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART. MY VEHICLE'S VIN # IS SPECIFICALLY LISTED ON THIS TSB AS AN EFFECTED VEHICLE. ALSO, THERE ARE MANY OF FORUMS, ONLINE, OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOYOTA IS REFUSING TO REPLACE THESE PARTS FOR OWNERS. THIS IS NOT A WEARABLE PART. IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO BE REPLACED AND IT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR (APPROX. $2,000) WITH NO DISCOUNTS. I SHOULD MENTION THAT I HAVE BEEN DILLIGENT WITH MY CAR'S MAINTENANCE AND CAN PULL MOST (IF NOT ALL) OF MY OIL CHANGES, IF NECESSARY. APPARENTLY, THE SAME ISSUE WAS DISCOVERED WITH CERTAIN LEXUS MODELS, BACK THEN, AND THEY DID A RECALL FOR THOSE VEHICLES BUT NOT THE TOYOTA MODELS (CAMRYS, HIGHLANDERS, RAV4S, SIENNAS, AND VENZAS WERE ALL AFFECTED FROM THIS PARTICULAR FACTORY FROM THE YEARS OF 2009-2011). I FILED A CASE WITH TOYOTA'S CORPORATE OFFICE (CASE # 1606011778) AND THEY OFFERED A $400 REFUND AFTER I PAID FOR THE REPAIR. THIS IS JUST NOT ACCEPTABLE, IN MY VIEW. YES, THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT THIS IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL BACK IN 2010 WHEN THEY DISCOVERED IT AND DITRIBUTED THE TSB. I OFFERED TO PAY FOR THE PART (AT TOYOTA'S COST) IF THEY COVERED THE LABOR (THAT IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE COST TO THE REPAIR), BUT THEY WOULD NOT BUDGE. IT IS A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE, AS WELL, BECAUSE I AM A SINGLE MOTHER. THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND OPERATING THE VEHICLE WITH A MALFUNTIONING VVT-I GEAR IS CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. I AM ATTACHING THE TSB WITH THE LISTED AFFECTED VIN #S.

I BROUGHT MY CAR IN A FOR FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT BECUASE I REPLACED FOUR TIRES. THE REAR TIRES COULD NOT BE ALIGNED BECAUSE THE THE NUTS FOR ADJUSTING THE REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT WERE FROZEN AND COULD NOT BE REMOVED. IN ORDER FOR THE CAR TO BE ALIGNED, THE REAR TIRE ROD NEEDS TO BE REPLACED PER TOYOTA CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS BACK IN AUGUST 2013 ( FOR 2006-2011 RAV4), HOWEVER, MY PARTICULAR VIN NUMBER DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL THUS I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET IN ORDER TO FOR MY CAR TO BE ALIGNED CORRECTLY (REPLACED THE REAR ROD). I FEEL THAT THIS VIN AND OTHERS SHOULD HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE RECALL.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO A LOCAL DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SHOCKS WERE LEAKING OIL AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SHOCKS WERE NOT REPLACED. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE (INTERIM NOTICE) FROM TOYOTA ON 4/20/2016 REGARDING WIPER MOTOR LINK CORROSION ON MY 2011 TOYOTA RAV4, NHTSA RECALL 15V-577.IN THE INTERIM NOTICE IT STATES THAT AN INTERIM REPAIR WILL BE PERFORMED AT NO CHARGE. I CALLED TWO (2) TOYOTA DEALERS AND BOTH SAID I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE FINAL REPAIR NOTICE. YET IN THE TOYOTA LETTER TO THEIR DEALERS DATED 2/25/2016 IT CLEARLY STATES THAT INTERIM REPAIRS WILL BE MADE TO VEHICLES LISTED IN PHASE 2 (F2S), COLD WEATHER CLIMATE STATES. IT ALSO STATES THAT IN THE NOTICE THAT I RECEIVED. THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME CONFUSION BETWEEN TOYOTA AND THEIR DEALERSHIPS REGARDING INTERIM REPAIRS BECAUSE WHAT THE DEALERS ARE SAYING IS NOT WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE LETTER THAT I RECEIVED.

WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AT SLOW SPEED UNDER 20 MPH IN SNOW THERE IS NO BRAKING ACTION AND THE CAR ROLLS TO A STOP. THE BRAKES ACT AS IF THEY ARE NOT WORKING AT ALL. I AM A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER WITH MULTIPLE DRIVING SCHOOLS. EVEN WHEN YOU LET OFF THE BRAKES AND REAPPLY IT'S AS IF THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN DISABLED. NEEDLESS TO SAY IT MAKES FOR A DIFFICULT STOP IN SNOW. I KNOW HOW ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WORK THESE ARE NOT. ON DRY PAVEMENT I HAVE HAD NO ISSUES.

THE CONTACT HAD A CHILD PASSENGER WHO WOULD NEED TO USE THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE SEAT BELT AND THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED BY THE MANUFACTURER TO USE THE CENTER SEAT BELT UNTIL THE REMEDY AND PART WAS SUPPLIED TO THE DEALER, WHICH WAS UNACCEPTABLE TO THE CONTACT. I RECENTLY HAD THE CHARCOAL CANISTER THAT FILTERS GAS FUELS FAIL. THIS CAUSED TEH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON. IN ADDITION THOUGH, THIS FAULT TOOK OUT 2 SAFETY SYSTEMS DUE TO THIS CODE. AFTER THE LIGHT CAME ON MY BRAKE ANTI SKID SYSTEM AND CRUISE CONTROL WERE INOPERABLE. I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL. IN MY OPINION, JUST BECAUSE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON SHOULD NOT CAUSE 2 SAFETY SYSTEMS TO BECOME INOPERABLE! WHY NO DISABLE THE AIRBAGS TOO. THE ANTI SKID SYSTEM HELPS YOU MAINTAIN STABILITY ON WET ROAD. I LIVE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WHERE THE ROADS ARE WET A LOT. I SEE FAILURE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL IS ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE. I USE CRUISE HABITUALLY SO KEEP ME UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT. I HAD TO DRIVE WITHOUT THESE 2 SYSTEMS FOR A MONTH TILL PARTS WERE AVAILABLE.
THE RECALL IS ANNOUNCED IN FEB 2010, 6 MONTH LATER NOW IN AUG 2016, THE REMEDY IS STILL NOT DONE.
WHILE DRIVING 55-60 ON A HIGHWAY, MY ANTI-SKID WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, THE 4WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT A HALF HOUR LATER, FOLLOWED BY THE ENGINE LIGHT APRX 1 HR LATER. THE FOLLOWING MORNING, WHILE DRIVING, THE CRUISE CONTROL WENT OUT ON ME, THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY SLOWED AND I NOTICED THE CRUISE LIGHT FLASHING ON AND OFF. THE REMOTE START DID NOT WORK ON DAY #3, AS I TRAVELED TO HAVE THE CAR REPAIRED AT SERRA TOYOTA, TRAVERSE CITY, MI. THE SERVICE TECH TOLD ME THAT "THE MECHANIC LITERALLY POURED WATER OUT OF THE EVAP CANISTER, WE HAVE SEEN OTHER RAV'S W THIS PROBLEM AND WE HAVE A BULLETIN ON IT, SO TOYOTA IS AWARE. THE CANISTER IS FAULTY, WHICH ALLOWED ROAD WATER, (VERY WET, SLUSHY ROADS AT TIME), TO GET IN AND DAMAGE THE WIRING." THE SERVICE TECH ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE NEW CANISTER/HOSE REPLACEMENT SYSTEM ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE. I EMAILED TOYOTA JAPAN, THEY HAD "HENRY KERRY OF TOYOTA EXECUTIVE HEADQUARTERS, TORRENCE, CALIF CALL ME. MR. KERRY STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RELATED TO OVERFILLING THE GAS TANK. I TOLD HIM THAT THE TECH SAID "(THEY) LITERALLY POURED WATER OUT AND THEY HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM PREVIOUSLY." MR. KERRY ADVISED THAT "I SHOULD HAVE TALKED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER TO GET THE FACTUAL INFO." BOTTOM LINE: I FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT ELECTRICAL FAILURE COULD OCCUR, DUE TO CANISTER/HOSE FAILURE AND THAT A NEW PART HAD BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH, ONCE INSTALLED, WOULD PREVENT (ROAD) WATER FROM SHORTING OUT THE WIRING. WHILE OUT OF STATE DEALERSHIP REPLACE PURGE VALVE- SEEMED OK, BUT THEN ON 1/25/16 WAS BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY HAD FOOT ON BRAKE AND FELT ENGINE RACING, PUT INTO PARK WITH RACING ENGINE, TURNED KEY OFF RESTARTED AND SEEMED OK HAD GARAGE CHECK COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING NO CODES SHOWING CURRENTLY BACK AT DEALERSHIP TO PUT ON THEIR COMPUTER. THIS IS AN ON-GOING ISSUE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, BUT DOES NOT HAPPEN ON ANY REGULAR BASIS SO IT HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED BY ANY GARAGE YET. PLEASE HELP

WHILE WASHING WITH A MICROFIBER CLOTH AND GARDEN HOSE WITH LESS THAN 20,000 MILES AND ONLY 4 YEARS OLD BLIZZARD PEARL PAINT IS PEELING OFF IN LARGE CHUNKS. 1.5 YEARS OUT OF WARRANTY. TOYOTA WILL NOT MAKE THIS RIGHT. I REALIZE SAFETY MAY NOT BE EMINENT BUT IN THE LONG RUN RUSTED METAL WILL LEAK WATER IN ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS.
