DRIVING AT 45 MPH + A GRINDING NOISE STARTS COMING FROM THE FRONT, NO BRAKE PEDAL, THEN A SHAKING SENSATION ON THE STEERING WHEEL, THE ABS/VCS LIGHTS START BLINKING. PULLED OVER AND THEN IT STOPPED. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
STARTED WITH BOTH VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS ON. IN BOTH WARM AND COLDER TEMPERATURES, THE CAR ABS ENGAGES. FEELS LIKE DRIVING OVER GRAVEL. CAR PULLS TO ONE SIDE OR ANOTHER, AND BRAKING SEEMS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. THIS BECAME MORE AND MORE COMMON. IT STARTED ONCE EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS, TO ALMOST EVERY TRIP. TOYOTA READ CODES AND STATED THAT IT WAS YAW RATE SENSOR THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. OVER A COST OF $1800. WE CHANGES IT AND THE CAR ACTED NORMALLY FOR 1 DAY. A DAY LATER THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND THE SKIDDING OCCURRED AGAIN. EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE YAW RATE SENSOR AND PERFORMING A 0-POINT CALIBRATION, THEY READ THE CODES, AND SHOWED THE FOLLOWING: C0371 YAW RATE SENSOR OUTPUT SIGNAL MALFUNCTION C1208 STEERING POSITION SENSOR OUTPUT SIGNAL MALFUNCTION C1234 MALFUNCTION IN YAW RATE SENSOR C1271 LOW OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF RIGHT FRONT SPEED SENSOR C1272 LOW OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF LEFT FRONT SPEED SENSOR C1273 LOW OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR C1274 LOW OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF LEFT REAR SPEED SENSOR C1275 ABNORMAL CHANGE IN OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF RIGHT FRONT SPEED SENSOR C1276 ABNORMAL CHANGE IN OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF LEFT FRONT SPEED SENSOR C1277 ABNORMAL CHANGE IN OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR C1278 ABNORMAL CHANGE IN OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF LEFT REAR SPEED SENSOR C1279 DECELERATION SENSOR IS FAULTY C1281 MASTER CYLINDER PRESSURE SENSOR OUTPUT SIGNAL IS FAULTY THEY ESTIMATED THAT THE COST OF REPAIRING ALL OF THESE SENSORS WAS APPROX $4500. THE LIKELIHOOD THAT ALL OF THESE SENSORS GAVE OUT AT THE SAME TIME, TO ME IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY. THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS CAR'S BRAKING SYSTEM AND THIS SEEMS TO BE AN EXPLOIT OF YET ANOTHER SHORTCOMING OF THIS CAR. CURRENTLY IF THE CAR SITS IDLING FOR MORE THAN 10 MINS, THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS COME ON REGARDLESS OF TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR TAILGATE LATCH BECAME FRACTURED AND AS A RESULT, IT PREVENTED HIM FROM OPENING THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 137,000.
AFTER COMING BACK FROM TRIP, ME AND MY FAMILY WERE HEADING HOME (WE WERE ABOUT 2 MILES FROM HOME), AND UPON COMING TO A RED LIGHT, I STEPPED THE BRAKE PEDAL ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, AND THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP; BUT WHEN THE GREEN LIGHT TRAFFIC CAME ON, AND AS SOON AS I LET GO OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND ABOUT TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR JUST STALLED ( ALSO WITH BATTERY LIGHT ON INDICATION LIT, CHECK ENGINE ON, ABS LIT, VSC TRAC LIT, VSC OFF LIT, BRAKE LIGHT INDICATION LIT, ABS LIGHT). SO, FIRST THING I DID IS TURN OFF THE ENGINE , PUT THE CAR IN THE PARK GEAR ( AT THE SAME TIME MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL), BUT AS SOON AS I TURN ON THE ENGINE, PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND LET GO OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. NEXT THING I DID IS LET 2 PEOPLE PUSH THE CAR WHILE IN NEUTRAL TO PUT THE CAR IN A SAFE PLACE WHERE THERE IS NO TRAFFIC, UPON THEM PUSHING THE CAR, THEY LEFT, AND THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING EVEN NO ONE PUSHING IT, AND CAME THE SCARIEST 20 SECONDS OF MY LIFE, CAR MADE A LOUD ANNOYING GRINDING SOUND, CAR STILL MOVING, EVEN WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE ON, MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, KEY REMOVED FROM IGNITION, CAR PLACED IN PARK, IN OTHER WORDS I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE CAR. AFTER 20 SECONDS, THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, AND WE GOT OUT OF THE CAR SCARED AND SHAKING, I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO DIE THAT DAY, BUT THANK GOD THE CAR STOPPED, OR MAYBE MY KIDS ANGELS HELPED AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. ALSO GOOD THING THERE WAS NO HEAVY INCOMING TRAFFIC, THERE WAS 1 OR 2 CARS ONLY IN THE WAY THAT STAYED OUT OF OUR WAY. I NEED HELP, TOYOTA HAS TO RECALL AND FIX IT BECAUSE IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND ALSO IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO, IF NOT I WILL BE REPORTING THESE TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND THE LOCAL STATE CONSUMER AGENCY. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC STOP AND WHEN THE ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE AND VEHICLE STALLED WITH THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE WAS SPORADICALLY RECURRING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
AFTER DRIVING MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 4X4, 70 MPH FOR 45 MILES, THE VEHICLE MADE AN ABRUPT RIGHT HAND TURN ON ITS OWN. THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM LOCKED THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO TURN RIGHT. LATER THAT WEEK MY MECHANIC REPLACED THE YAW SENSOR. SINCE THEN, THE TRUCK HAS BEHAVED AS EXPECTED. I JUST HEARD A FRIEND ALSO HAD A 2001 4X4 TOYOTA TACOMA AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED, ALTHOUGH HIS VEHICLE ROLLED 5 TIMES AND THERE WERE SEVERAL INJURIES. HE HAD ABOUT 135000 MILE ON HIS VEHICLE. *TR
ON FREEWAY CRUISING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS WITH NO WARNING AT ALL, LOSS OF POWER AND UNABLE TO ENGAGE GEARS. IT IS NOW IN THE SHOP MECHANIC SAYS IT IS THE PLANETARY GEARS IN TRANSMISSION AND WILL REQUIRE A REBUILD. COST $3500. *TR
DRIVING THE FAMILY FROM CO TO CA. ON THE LAST LEG BETWEEN LAS VEGAS AND LOS ANGELES. CRUISING ALONG AT 75 WHEN THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS CAME ON. MY TRUCK IMMEDIATELY BRAKED AND PULLED TO THE LEFT WHILE DECELERATING. LONGEST 5 SECONDS OF MY LIFE. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE TO MY IMMEDIATE LEFT. TAKING IT TO A DEALER SHORTLY FOR CONSULTATION. SOMEONE WILL GET HURT IF THIS IS NOT ADDRESSED! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE EXTERIOR REAR LIFT GATE LATCH BECAME FRACTURED AND DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NOT AN INTERIOR LATCH TO OPEN THE LIFT GATE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,380. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON A SMOOTH PAVEMENT THE VSC/TRAC SYSTEM ENGAGES FOR NO REASON. SOUNDING OFF THE INTERNAL CHIME AND TURNING THE VSC/TRAC LIGHTS ON THE DASH. THE ABS SYSTEM KICKS IN AND GRINDS ON THE BRAKES. LOSS OF STEERING IS PRESENT AS THE VEHICLE PULLS TO ONE SIDE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE RACK AND PINION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT REPLACED BRAKE CALIPERS AND ROTORS, 4 NEW TIRES AND AN ALIGNMENT WAS PERFORMED IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT SIX MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR INSPECTION AND FAILED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION AROUND THE ENTIRE SUB FRAME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. ALSO, THE CONTACT STATED THAT ON THE WAY HOME WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SWAY VIOLENTLY. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE EXHAUST AND SUB FRAME WERE CRACKED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 199,026.
THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS CAME ON. THE SEQUOIA MADE A SCRUBBING NOISE AND THE VEHICLE SKIDDED LEFT AND RIGHT A FEW TIMES. SCARY! THE LIGHTS REMAINED ON. THEY WENT OFF LATER THAT NIGHT, BUT HAVE COME BACK ON AT LEAST THREE OTHER TIMES SINCE THEN. THE VEHICLE HAS SKIDDED ALL BUT ONE TIME. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS. I HAVE SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS BUT NO RECALLS OR HELP. THE SPEED DOES NOT MATTER AND THERE IS NO WARNING THAT THIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. HELP! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH THE TRACTION CONTROL, VSC TRAC AND THE SLIP WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE THEN BEGAN TO BRAKE INDEPENDENTLY. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE PULLED INTO THE RIGHT ABNORMALLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED FIVE TIMES WHEN THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 154,000.
LOWER BALL JOINT WENT BAD. HAD IT FIXED THREE TIMES FIR THE SAME ISSUE AND IT STILL IS NOT WORKING RIGHT. I WAS TOLD BY AUTOMATIC THAT IT COULD BE A MANUFACTURER DAMAGE BECAUSE THE BALL JOINTS IT SHOULD NOT KEEP WEARING OUT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE ABS, LOGIC, AND CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 177,000.
I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE NEAREST DEALER LOCATED NEAR MY HOME AND I TOOK MY RECALL LETTER I MUST OF SAT THERE FOR 2 HOURS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SPEAK TO ME ABOUT THIS RECALL ISSUE BUT GOT THE RUN AROUND FOR 2 MORE HOURS FINALLY A REP APPROACHED ME AND ASKED IF I COULD COME BACK ANOTHER DAY. I REQUESTED A LETTER OR SOME KIND OF DOCUMENT TO VERIFY MY COMPLIANCE WITH THE LETTER I RECEIVED BUT WAS DENIED. MY SPARE TIRE FELL OFF DURING THIS ACCIDENT THANK GOD NO ONE WAS HURT. *TR
MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE PAST 5 MONTHS MY 2001 SEQUOIA WILL SUDDENLY APPLY THE BRAKES STRONGLY WHILE DRIVING, SOMETIMES CAUSING THE STEERING TO PULL TO THE RIGHT. THANKFULLY THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN SHORTLY AFTER BEGINNING TO DRIVE, SO THE SPEEDS HAVE BEEN MUNICIPAL SPEED, RATHER THAN HIGHWAY. AT THE SAME TIME, A WARNING BELL SOUNDS AND THE VSC AND ABS LIGHTS COME ON IN YELLOW. SOMETIMES WHEN I START THE VEHICLE, THE VSC AND ABS LIGHTS ARE ALREADY ON, SO THE SUDDEN BRAKING DOES NOT OCCUR. IF THE LIGHTS ARE OFF, I HAVE LEARNED TO PREPARE FOR THE SUDDEN BRAKING. I WILL TAKE THIS TO TOYOTA BEFORE THE SNOW FLIES HERE IN NORTHERN NY BECAUSE THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY HAZARD, AND COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WHEN THE ROADS ARE SNOW AND ICE COVERED. *JS
The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while approaching the vehicle, she noticed rust and corrosion on the undercarriage of the entire vehicle. The contact stated that she had received a manufacturer recall notification and the vehicle was taken to the local dealer who sprayed the undercarriage with a rust coating inhibitor to prevent the undercarriage from rusting however, the failure occurred. The contact took the vehicle to another local dealer Millennium Toyota (257 N. Franklin St, Hempstead, NY 11550, (516) 874-2581) who inspected the vehicle and stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
WHILE DRIVING FORWARD FROM A STOPPED POSITION ON A FLAT, LEVEL, PAVED ROAD WITH THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AT 72, THE VSC (VEHICLE SKID CONTROL) ACTIVATED AND NEARLY PULLED ME INTO THE LANE NEXT TO ME. THERE WERE NO POT HOLES OR ANYTHING IN THE ROAD THAT WOULD'VE CAUSED IT. IT STOPPED AFTER A FEW SECONDS AND THEN AGAIN, ABOUT TWO MINUTES LATER AT A 25MPH SPEED , THE SYSTEM ACTIVATED AGAIN AND I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE BRAKES OR STEERING WHILE THE SYSTEM WAS ACTIVATING. THE CAR IS GREAT SHAPE, ONE-OWNER, WELL MAINTAINED AND THERE SEEMS TO BE A HISTORY WITH TOYOTA AND THE VSC SYSTEM. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS THAT THE VSC PUT ME IN. *TR
WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE VSC TRAC LIGHT CAME ON, THE VEHICLE STARTED GRINDING WHILE I WAS PRESSING THE GAS AND BRAKES. THE VEHICLE FELT AS IF IT WAS LOOSING POWER, I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL BECAUSE CAR WAS LOSING POWER AND CONTROL. THE ABS LIGHT ALSO CAME ON AND VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING VERY BADLY. THIS HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES WHILE I'M DRIVING VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO BE SERVICED FROM THE DEALER BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. I WILL TALK WITH AN ATTORNEY ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS BECAUSE I AM VERY AFRAID OF A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE AND KIDS. *TR

THE CONTACT NOTICED A BUZZING AND GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE TRACTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. *TR
FRAME ROT AND HOLE/PERFORATION THROUGH FRAME FOUND WHILE INSPECTING THE 2001 SEQUOIA FOR THE "LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN C0D (SPECIFIC 20 COLD CLIMATE STATES ONLY) - CORROSION-RESISTANT COMPOUND APPLICATION TO THE VEHICLE'S FRAME". DEALER INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA WOULD REPLACE THE FRAME FOR FREE BUT THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $6,000 TO REPLACE SUSPENSION, BRAKE LINES AND EXHAUST COMPONENTS REMOVED IN THE PROCESS. DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REUSE THE COMPONENTS REMOVED AS PART OF THE FRAME REPLACEMENT. THESE COMPONENTS ARE FUNCTIONING TODAY AND DO NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE ONLY REASON THE DEALER GAVE FOR THE ADDITIONAL COST IS THAT THEY WOULD NOT RE-INSTALL THE EXISTING PARTS. SOUNDS LIKE A BAIT AND SWITCH SCAM. TOYOTA OFFERS TO INSPECT THE CAR AND PERFORM A NO-COST RECALL TO FIX A SERIOUS MANUFACTURERS DEFECT FOR $6,000. THERE IS NO WAY TO PERFORM THE RECALL WITHOUT INCURRING THE ADDITIONAL COSTS. *TR
TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY AT A SPEED OF 55 MILES THE VCS TRAC CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON AND THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED WITH OUT ME HITTING THE BREAKS, I LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING FOR A SLIGHT SECOND, THE TRUCK SWERVED TO THE LEFT, IT ALMOST CAUSE ME TO HIT A CAR ON THE LEFT OF ME ON THE FREEWAY. ONCE I TURNED THE CAR OFF, THE VCS TRAC LIGHTS TURNED OFF, THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE STREET AT A LOWER SPEED OF 45 MILE THE VCS TRAC LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH AND THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND THE TRUCK SWERVED TO THE LEFT, THE LIGHTS STAYED ON AGAIN UNTIL I TURNED OFF THE TRUCK. *TR
I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON THE FREEWAY ALL OF A SUDDEN THE VSC TRAC TURNS ON AND MY STEERING WHEEL JERKED TO THE RIGHT ALMOST HIDING THE VEHICLE ON THE RIGHT LANE.. I NOTICED A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE TRACTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED.ITS VERY HARD TO SLOW DOWN. ITS IF I HIT A PUDDLE OF WATER BUT THIS WAS ON A SUNNY AND CLEAR DAY. THIS HAPPENED NUMEROUS OF TIMES. NOW THE TRUCK JUST SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY DUE TO THE SCARE OF DRIVING IT AND SOMEONE GETTING KILLED. *TR
I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 120,000 MILES ON IT AND ON 3/3/13 I HAD A VERY BAD INCIDENT HAPPEN WITH THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC). THE PROBLEM HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN LESS THAN A MILE. I WAS DRIVING ON SUNNY DAY ON A STRAIGHTAWAY ABOUT 35 MPH BOTH TIMES WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE THE VSC LIGHT CAME ON AND THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY, THE BRAKES PEDAL FELT LIKE SOMETHING HAD BROKEN WITH IT, AND IT WOULD NOT ALLOWING ME TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CAR FOR LACK OF A BETTER WAY TO WORD IT WAS ACTING LIKE IT WAS POSSESSED. AT THIS POINT I HAVE VERY LITTLE CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE AND I HAD TO DO SOMETHING ASAP. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ON A VERY STEEP DOWNWARD BANK. I WAS LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND I WAS VERY LUCKY TO HAVE NOT BEEN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. I HAD 2 ADULTS AND 4 CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND I FEEL LUCK THAT THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT AND NO ONE WAS HURT OR KILLED! I AM NOW AT THE POINT THAT I?M SCARRED TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE. 1.ON DRY PAVEMENT CIRCULAR ENTRANCE/EXIT RAMPS THE VEHICLE SKID CONTROL SYSTEM KICKS IN AT ABOUT 35-40 MPH WHICH IS NOT ONLY ALARMING BUT POSSIBLY DANGEROUS IF SOMEONE IS TAILGATING. I'M ASSUMING THIS IS SOMETHING RELATED TO PULLING G FORCES SINCE IT'S NEVER DONE THIS IN A STRAIGHT LINE. 2.I TESTED UNDER BOTH 2WD AND 4WD AND IT BEHAVED THE SAME. 3.WHEN I KICKED IN THE VSC OFF BUTTON UNDER 4WD BEFORE ENTERING THE RAMP, THE VSC DID NOT KICK IN, SO THAT SEEMS TO BE WORKING. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A SHOPPING MALL PARKING LOT AT 5 MPH. OUR VEHICLE SHUDDERED AND SWERVED TO THE RIGHT WHILE A BUZZER WENT OFF & THEN THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE NEXT TWO INCIDENTS OCCURRED OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY BETWEEN 20-25 MPH. ON BOTH OCCASIONS OUR VEHICLE LOST CONTROL AND VEERED TO THE RIGHT BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS LIFE SAFETY DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY TOYOTA FOR THE 2003 SEQUOIA'S AND BY THE VAST AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS SHOULD EXTEND TO EARLIER MODELS AS WELL. I RECENTLY TOOK OUR SEQUOIA INTO A MECHANIC AND THEIR TROUBLE SHOOTING REVEALED THAT THE SKID CONTROL ECU WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, COSTING OVER $3400. *TR
VEHICLE FRAME FAILURE DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST. FRAME RECALLED AFTER WE RECEIVED A LETTER TO HAVE FRAME INSPECTED. LOCAL DEALER INSPECTED AND FOUND IT QUALIFIES FOR RECALL AND CAN BE REPLACED, HOWEVER, THE MANIFOLD AND CATALYST, AND TIMING BELT, ETC. LIKELY WILL BE DAMAGED IN FRAME REPLACEMENT SINCE THEY ARE RUSTED TO FRAME. THE QUOTE TO REPLACE THOSE ITEMS MORE THAN VEHICLE IS WORTH--CAR IS TOTALED DUE TO FAILING PARTS AND RUST. WE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA AND WE WERE POLITELY TOLD THAT ONLY THE FRAME IS COVERED IN RECALL. VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT GIVE US ANY COMPENSATION TOWARD ANOTHER VEHICLE SINCE THIS VEHICLE IS NOW TOTALED IN IT'S VALUE (IF EXHAUST SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED IN ADDITION TO FRAME). WE ARE PROCEEDING WITH REPLACEMENT AND WILL SEE WHETHER THE EXISTING EXHAUST SYSTEM CAN BE SALVAGED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL IN REGARD TO FRAME RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN CONFIRMED THAT THE FRAME WAS INDEED RUSTED. IN ADDITION TO THE FRAME RUST, THE SHOCKS, EXHAUST AND THE POWER STEERING LINES WERE ALSO FOUND TO BE RUSTED. THE DEALER WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO ANY COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN THE FRAME. THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT: AS I WAS DRIVING THEN SUDDENLY THE TRUCK STARTED TO BEEP AND MOVES BACK AND FORTH AND MADE A BRAKING SOUND. AND I WENT INTO THE SIDE AND HIT A SMALL POST AND THE SEAT BELT TIGHTEN. NOW MY BACK HAS BEEN HURTING ME SINCE. AND SOME LIGHTS WERE ON. THE VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS WERE ON. LAST YEAR MY CAR WHILE TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 50 MPH JUST COLLAPSED. MY BALL JOINTS FELL COMPLETELY OFF. MY THE GRACE OF GOD I WASN'T KILLED BECAUSE I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE. THE 2000-2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VEHICLES SHARE IDENTICAL FRAME CROSS MEMBER AND SPARE TIRE MOUNTING ARRANGEMENTS IN WHICH EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE REAR CROSS MEMBER AND SPARE TIRE MOUNTING LOCATION CAN CAUSE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE REAR CARGO LOAD FLOOR WHICH WOULD RESULT IN A ROAD HAZARD. THIS SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE OR MOUNTING BRACKET COULD CAUSE A CRASH. ALSO, CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER COULD AFFECT THE REAR BRAKE LINES AND THE PROPORTIONING VALVE, RESULTING IN DIMINISHED BRAKING CAPABILITY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 192,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

ACTUALLY, THIS WAS NOT AN "INCIDENT". RATHER IT WAS ME CRAWLING UNDER THE TRUCK TO SCRAPE SOME RUST OFF OF THE FRAME. WHAT I FOUND WAS ABOUT A ONE FOOT LONG RUSTED "SLIT" IN THE FRAME. IT DID NOT LOOK SAFE TO ME, SO I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER TO INSPECT. (COST ME $25.) I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS SAFE FOR NOW, BUT WOULD SOON NOT BE SAFE. THE TOYOTA FIELD SPECIALIST SAID THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. LOOKING ONLINE, I SEE COUNTLESS CASES OF ROTTING FRAMES ON THIS YEAR SEQUOIA. THINGS I SEE ONLINE FROM OTHER OWNERS (USING MY WORDS): "THE FRAME IS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IT WAS MADE WITH EITHER INFERIOR MATERIAL OR BAD COATING. THE TACOMA (WITH THE SAME FRAME) HAS BEEN COVERED BY TOYOTA." LOTS OF UPSET PEOPLE OUT THERE! NOT SURE WHAT TO DO... DON'T FEEL RIGHT ABOUT SELLING IT... DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT TOO MUCH. ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2012 I HAD MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 170,334 MILES SERVICED AT PRIME TOYOTA IN WEST ROXBURY MA DUE TO THE RECALL FOR FRAME CORROSION. IT WAS DETERMINED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE FRAME QUALIFIED FOR RUST PREVENTION COATING WHICH THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE APPLICATION. ON JUNE 12, 2015 I HAD PERFORMED PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE ON SAME VEHICLE NOW WITH 225,345 MILES THE INSPECTION OF FRAME REVEALED SEVERAL SITES OF RUST THROUGHOUT THE FRAME IN SOME CASES THE RUST HAS ROTTED THROUGH. I WAS ADVISED SINCE THE MANUFACTURER PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED PREVENTIVE MEASURES IN 2012 THEY ARE NO LONGER LIABLE AND WOULD NOT REPLACE FRAME AT THEIR COST. HENCE MY COMPLAINT FOR A FAIR RESOLUTION. I AM AWARE THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH SIMILAR VEHICLES BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

WIFE WAS PULLING OFF FROM A STOPLIGHT WHEN THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM LIGHT (SKIDDING CAR ICON) AND WARNING BUZZER CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A LOUD GRINDING SOUND, VIBRATING, AND PULLING TO THE RIGHT. SHE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER, TURNED IT OFF, AND CALLED ME TO COME SWAP VEHICLES WITH HER. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, OF COURSE, THE SYMPTOMS HAD GONE AWAY. SEVERAL DAYS LATER ON A FAMILY TRIP, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE AT 65-70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING SHE HAD DESCRIBED. WE PULLED OVER, THE NOISE STOPPED, AND THEN THE VSC/TRAC AND TRAC OFF CAME ON. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FIX. TOO MANY VEHICLES HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, OVER SEVERAL PRODUCTION YEARS (2003'S ACTUALLY HAVE A RECALL FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE). HOWEVER, READING VARIOUS FORUMS HAS MADE ME THINK TOYOTA DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS. BUT IT'S DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CHECKED OUT. *TR

VEHICLE'S TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED WHILE DRIVING ON DRY FLAT PAVEMENT. VSC AND TRAC CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON, VEHICLE PULLED HARD TO THE RIGHT, MADE LOUD GRINDING NOISE, AND WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL STEERING AND BRAKING. THIS CONTINUED FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE MINUTE, STOPPED, AND THEN DID IT AGAIN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO FATAL ACCIDENT IF IT OCCURS AT HIGHER SPEEDS. IT HAPPENED WITH OUR CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND SCARED EVERYONE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAS HAPPENED TO US, BUT APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL.
