TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR AXLE SEAL WAS LEAKING. HE WAS CONCERNED THAT IT COULD LEAK ON THE BRAKE ROTORS. THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR THE FAILURE FOR FREE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE SAME FAILURE IN 2004. HOWEVER, SINCE THERE IS AN UPDATED SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THE FAILURE, HE FEELS HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR AGAIN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 84,000.
SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER DURING ACCELERATION OF TOYOTA 2001 VEHICLE ON THREE OCCASIONS. *TR
BRAKE, ABS, SKID CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ON , DEALER SERVICE CHECKED AND RECOMMENDED REPLACING BATTERY WHICH WAS DONE BY THEM. FOLLOWING DAY WARNING LIGHTS STILL ON INTERMITTENTLY , RETURNED TO DEALER FOR SERVICE BUT THE WARNING LIGHTS WOULD NOT COME ON WHILE THE DEALER HAD IT. WAS ADVISED IT WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, JUST MALFUNCTIONING WARNING LIGHTS. NOW( OCTOBER 2007) THE LIGHTS ARE ALWAYS ON AND WHEN RETURNED TO DEALER FOR SERVICE AGAIN WAS TOLD THIS TIME IT WAS THE SKID CONTROL ECU, AND RECOMMEND REPLACING SKID CONTROL ECU. WAS ALSO TOLD IT THAT THE ABS AND SKID CONTROL WERE NOT FUNCTIONING WHEN LIGHTS WERE ON SO HANDLING WOULD BE AFFECTED (SAFETY ISSUE ). AT THIS TIME I AM GATHERING INFORMATION ON WHETHER IT SHOULD BE REPLACED OR NOT. *TR
FAILURE OF VEHICLE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER ON 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. VEHICLE LOSES CRITICAL SAFETY FUNCTIONALITY. REPAIR AT TOYOTA DEALER QUOTED AT $4,000. *TR
ON FRIDAY, MAY 25, 2007 AT APPROXIMATELY 2:45PM, MY WIFE (BELINDA) WAS TRAVELING ON THE NORTHBOUND 57 FREEWAY TRANSITIONING TO THE WESTBOUND 210 FREEWAY. AT THIS POINT, SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HYSTERICAL, SHE STILL MANAGED TO NAVIGATE THE VEHICLE OVER TO WHAT IS A QUASI SHOULDER ON THIS TRANSITION ONLY TO EXIT THE VEHICLE, EXAMINE THE AFFECTED AREA (PASSENGER FRONT WHEEL), TO FIND THAT THE WHEEL ITSELF HAD COME APART FROM THE VEHICLE LOOKING LIKE A \"PANCAKE.\" IT WOULD ONLY BE A FEW MOMENTS BEFORE PASSERSBY STOPPED STATING TO HER (AFTER THEY HAD EXAMINED THE DAMAGE) THAT HER BALL-JOINT HAD BROKEN ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER PARTS OF THE SUSPENSION. SHE WAS LUCKY SHE WASN'T KILLED (OR, MY ENTIRE FAMILY FOR THAT MATTER ON A TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO WE HAD TAKEN ONLY THREE WEEKS BEFORE THIS DATE). MY WIFE TELEPHONED ME ON MY CELL PHONE, AT WHICH POINT I CALLED THE AUTO CLUB FOR A TOW. SHORTLY AFTER, A CHP OFFICER HAD APPEARED ON THE SCENE AS WELL AS A TOW-TRUCK DRIVER. TRAFFIC WAS BACKED UP FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES. HOWEVER, BOTH THE CHP PERSON AND THE TOW-TRUCK DRIVER STATED MORE SPECIFICALLY THAT, THE LOWER BALL-JOINT HAD FAILED. MY WIFE WAS PETRIFIED. WHEN I GOT IN THERE, A SERVICE-WRITER (I HAVE HER CARD SOMEWHERE ELSE) HAD ALREADY UNDERTAKEN A SEARCH TO SEE IF MY VEHICLE FELL UNDER A RECALL. I FOUND IT CURIOUS THAT SHE\'D DO A SEARCH FOR THIS SPECIFIC RECALL IF SHE DID NOT ALREADY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE (AS IF SHE HAD SEEN THIS EXACT KIND OF DAMAGE BEFORE). IN OTHER WORDS, I AM REASONABLY CERTAIN THAT SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE TRUCK WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. AS OF THIS MORNING, I SPOKE WITH THE SYMES SERVICE MANAGER (LOUIS) WHO IN TURN STATED THAT HE SPOKE WITH HIS \"AREA DIRECTOR\" \"TOMO.\" HE INSTRUCTED HIS SERVICE MANAGER, LOUIS, TO TELL ME THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT BE TAKING CARE OF THIS AS IT DOES NOT FALL WITHIN THE VEHICLES RECALLED. *TR
WE TRIED TO OPEN THE BACK HATCH AND THE HANDLE WAS BROKEN. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO OPEN THE HATCH. BECAUSE OF THIS, MY HUSBAND HAD TO CRAWL OVER THE SEATS AND PULL OUR HEAVY LUGGAGE OUT THE OTHER DIRECTION WHILE THE SHUTTLE WAS WAITING TO TAKE US TO THE AIRPORT. WE HAD TO SPEND $200 TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM IN ADDITION TO OUR OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. *JB
IN 2007, I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA SEQUOIA TO WORK AND IT STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY. I TOOK IT TO A SHOP THEY TOLD ME THAT MY TRANSMISSION FAIL AND IT COST ME $3500.00. I CALLED TOYOTA FOR SOME ASSISTANCE THEY DID NOT EVEN CARE ABOUT. *TR
OWNER OF 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WHO'S TRANSMIISION HAS FAILED AND REQUIRES NEW TRANSMISSION. MANY POSTINGS ON INTERENT WITH THE SAME ISSSUE OF FAILURE DUE TO SO CALLED OVERDRIVE PLANETARY GEAR DEFECT. SHOULD BE A NATIONAL RECALL.
THE THROTTLE BODY SENSOR FAILED NUMEROUS TIMES CAUSING MY FAMILY TO LOSE ALL ACCELERATION ON A VERY BUSY HIGHWAY. I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY AND GET A TOW TO THE TOYOTA DEALER (DAVID MAUS) AND THEY THOUGHT INITIALLY THAT THE WHOLE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ($2000+) BUT AFTER THE MECHANIC CLEANED THE SENSOR IT RESOLVED THE ISSUE THUS FAR, ITS BEEN THREE MONTHS WITHOUT RECURRENCE. I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THIS IS A CHEAP FIX AS I BELIEVE OTHERS NOTED HERE THAT THE DEALERSHIP ONLY OFFERED REPLACEMENT AS A SOLUTION. I DID HAVE A SECOND QUOTE DONE ELSEWHERE JUST TO BE SURE AND THEY WERE GOING TO REPLACE THE WHOLE THROTTLE BODY AS WELL WITHOUT TRYING AN ALTERNATIVE. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE AND GET A SECOND OPINION. *TR
TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HE WALKED AROUND THE BACK OF THE 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 68000 FAILURE MILEAGE HE NOTICED THAT THE LATCH WAS BROKEN AND WOULD NOT OPEN, ALSO THE REAR HATCHBACK APPEARED CLOSED, BUT IT WOULD NOT FULLY LATCH. THE HATCHBACK WOULD POP OPEN WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED TWICE. *AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE VERSA-TRACK STABILITY CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER HAS NOT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST OCCURRENCE. AS OF JULY 9, 2007, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 116,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
VSC TRAC/VSC OFF LIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY TURNS ON, REGARDLESS OF DRIVING CONDITION, SPEED OR WEATHER. *TR
FRONT SUSPENSION, LOWER CONTROL ARM, BALL JOINT SEPARATED WHILE BACKING THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL COLLAPSED AND FOLDED UNDER THE WHEEL WELL CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE SUSPENSION, AXLE, AND VEHICLE BODY. *JB
2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHEN I SHIFTED FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE THE ENGINE ROARED TO A FULLY RACING ENGINE AND ACCELERATED FORWARD. HARD BRAKING COULD NOT SLOW THE VEHICLE AND IT HIT THE BACK OF A 2004 HONDA MINI-VAN THAT WAS PARKED, DOING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE BUT CAUSING NO INJURIES. *JB
I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, PURCHASED USED IN 2004. IN 2006, THE ABS,VSC,BRAKE LIGHTS BEGAN TO LIGHT UP INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER A FEW MONTHS, THEY CAME ON & STAYED ON. THE DEALER DID A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND SAID IT WAS A COMPUTER PROBLEM AND WOULD COST $2500+ TO FIX. THIS SEEMS LIKE A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW BY TOYOTA, AND CAUSES AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE CONDITION. I WOULD EXPECT A RECALL DUE TO THE NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS.
WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT TOYOTAS, I THOUGHT I SHOULD FILE MY COMPLAINT ABOUT MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT 70 MPH WHEN MY FRONT RIGHT WHEEL SUDDENLY FLEW OFF! THE CAR SLAMMED DOWN ON TO THE PAVEMENT AND LUCKILY THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD IN WYOMING. THE PINS THAT THE LUG NUTSSCREW ON TO WERE ALL SHEERED OFF. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING 25-70 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARS A NOISE COMING FROM THE VSE AND THE TRACK OFF LIGHT ILLUMINATES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATES AS A RESULT OF THIS INTERMITTENT FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CAUSE OF FAILURE COULD POSSIBLY BE THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR, BUT THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE FAILURE WOULD GO AWAY. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED WAS DRIVING AT 60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY WITH 110000 MILES ON VEHICLE WHEN HE HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM TRANSMISSION. AT WHICH POINT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT CHANGE GEARS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CONTACT THEN HAD THE VEHICLE TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHERE THEY TOLD HIM ALL OF THE GEARS WERE DAMAGED*AK THE TECHNICIAN FOUND METAL SHAVING IN THE TRANSMISSION PAN. THE TRANSMISSION HAD SEVER INTERNAL FAILURE. UPDATED 01/19/07. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT NOTICED FLUID LEAKING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING AND THE REAR FRAME WAS CORRODED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
BADLY DECOMPOSING FRAME SINCE PAST 5 YEARS, CAN POKE A FINGER THROUGH FRAME RAILS, COMPROMISING SUSPENSION ATTACHMENT POINTS/WELDS. 229,000 MILES, GARAGED 100%, 11 YEARS OLD. TOYOTA CLAIM FILED, CASE 1111161824. TOYOTA IS TELLING DIFFERENT CLAIMANTS DIFFERENT THINGS, TOLD ME THE TUNDRA IS THE ONLY VEHICLE EFFECTED AND THAT FRAMES ARE BEING REPLACED. ON EDMUNDS.COM/SEQUOIA FORUM/ I SEE THAT TOYOTA IS REPLACING SEQUOIA FRAMES OR BUYING VEHICLES ABOVE KELLY BB PRICING. THEIR REPRESENTATIVE WHO HELPED ME FILE THE ABOVE CLAIM TOLD ME, AND I QUOTE "TOYOTA HAS NO CURRENT COMPLAINS ABOUT THIS SEQUOIA FRAME ROT PROBLEM". THAT IS AN OUT AND OUT LIE. ONE TOYOTA MECHANIC ADVISED ME TO NOT DRIVE MY VEHICLE AND ESPECIALLY NOT TO TOW ANYTHING WITH IT, AND THAT THE TUNDRA FRAME IS THE SAME AS SEQUOIA - SAME PLACE OF ASSEMBLY TOO?. EFFECTIVELY, TOYOTA HAS MADE MY INVESTMENT IN THIS VEHICLE WORTHLESS AS I CANNOT SELL IT, NOR WILL IT PASS INSPECTION, DESPITE THE INTERIOR AND DRIVE TRAIN BEING VERY SERVICEABLE. A FAILURE AT SPEED OF THIS FRAME OR SUSPENSION COMPONENTS BY UNAWARE OWNERS CAN CAUSE CATASTROPHIC RESULTS. TOYOTA OWNS ITS OWNERS 1. AN ALERT ABOUT POSSIBLE DANGERS 2. A CONSISTENT RESPONSE, ONE THAT DOESN'T MUDDY THE WATERS WITH ACCUSATIONS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SUBJECT TO ROAD SALT. 3. A REMEDY FOR OWNERS SO THEIR INVESTMENT IS NOT REDUCED TO ZERO AND THEY HAVE ALTERNATIVES FOR SAFETY. I WILL BE CONTACTING A LAWYER AND THE LOCAL TV STATION. I HOPE WE CAN RELY ON THE NHTSA TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTION: 1. START A SERIOUS INVESTIGATION ABOUT THIS SAFETY DEFECT; MANY EFFECTED VEHICLES ARE NOT NEARLY AS OLD AS MINE, NOR FROM NORTHERN STATES WHERE ROAD SALT IS USED 2. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THE DEALER TOLD THE CONSUMER THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG, AND IT WAS PROBABLY A LOOSE GAS CAP. WHILE DRIVING, THE VSC ACTIVATED, THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. UPDATED 09/15/06. *JB
GOT 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA 02/2001 MANY PROBLEMS. ONE IS VSC SYSTEM WARN LIGHTS ON, TOTAL ACTIVATION OF VSC SYSTEM FOR NO REASON. 8/04 BROUGHT TO DEALER, VSC WARNING LIGHTS ON AND SOMETIMES POWER CUT,VERY DANGEROUS! DEALER FOUND "YAW RATE SENSOR MAY POSSIBLY BE MALFUNCTIONING, BUT EVERYTHING WORKING ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS NO PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. VSC SYSTEM WORKING AS DESIGNED. OK TO RETURN TO SERVICE." 7/06 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. BROUGHT TO DEALER 8/3/06, TOLD NOTHING WRONG, PROBABLY LOOSE GAS CAP. WE HAD HEARD THAT EXCUSE BEFORE. 8/18/06 ON A TRIP FROM CT TO SC, VSC OFF/ VSC TRAC OFF WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND BEEPED. ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION, PARKED CAR FOR 1 HOUR. DROVE ABOUT 1 MI VSC SYSTEM FULLY ACTIVATED BROUGHT US TO COMPLETE STOP IN TRAFFIC, ALMOST REAR ENDED! TOOK TO LOCAL DEALER (8/21). $191 LATER WAS TOLD IT WAS A SENSOR MALFUNCTION NOT A SAFETY ISSUE WHAT SO EVER. SERVICE REP SAID "ABSOLUTELY NOT A PROBLEM TO DRIVE TO CT PERFECTLY SAFE". 3 HOURS LATER VSC OFF /VSC TRACK OFF WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. ON OUR LAST STOP WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF AS USUAL BUT DID NOT COME BACK ON RIGHT AWAY. INSTEAD VSC SYSTEM WENT INTO TOTAL ACTIVATION ON I81 AT 70 MPH! LUCKILY WE WERE IN RIGHT LANE. MADE IT TO NARROW SHOULDER. GOT VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL, THE SHOULDER HAD RUN OUT AND WE WERE ABOUT 1 FT FROM HITTING THE GUARDRAIL. WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A 40 CAR PILE UP WITH MANY DEATHS! BROUGHT VEHICLE TO OUR LOCAL DEALER. PROBLEM SO DANGEROUS THAT I DON'T WANT TO GET IN THIS CAR AGAIN! I WILL NEVER FEEL SAFE OR TRUST TOYOTA SERVICE AGAIN. TOYOTA NEEDS TO EDUCATE DEALER SERVICE DEPTS AND RECALL THIS VEHICLE BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. THIS IS ONLY ONE OF MANY PROBLEMS WE HAVE HAD WITH THIS CAR AND TOYOTA SERVICE. WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR HURT TWICE (NOT JUST THIS INCIDENT) BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTIONS AND TOYOTA SERVICE MISTAKES. WE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF TOYOTA'S REPUTATION FOR SAFE, QUALITY-BUILT VEHICLES. WE GOT NEITHER! *JB
DT*: CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE'S SKID CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL WERE MAKING THE VEHICLE VERY SLOW. NO MATTER HOW FAR DOWN THE GAS PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE WOULD STILL NOT OBTAIN THE REQUIRED POWER FROM THE ENGINE. THE TRACTION CONTROL AND SKID CONTROL WERE ALSO NOT BEING CONTROLLED BY THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER. THIS PROBLEM STARTED A YEAR AGO AND WAS MORE COMMON DURING THE SUMMER SEASON. THERE WERE NO ACCIDENTS REPORTED TO THESE INCIDENCES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP HOWEVER THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE SKID CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL COMPUTER WERE NOT WORKING AUTOMATICALLY, THE BRAKES WOULD CONTINUE TO OPERATE SAFELY.
VEHICLE SKID CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON AND WOULD GO ON AND OFF. IT STARTED AROUND 30,000 MILES AND WOULD LIGHT UP AFTER GOING OVER A SMALL BUMP OR DURING A TIGHT TURN. AT 67,000 MILES IT WENT OFF AT 60 MPH DURING AN ON RAMP ACCELERATION RESULTING IN A VIOLENT SHANK OF THE VEHICLE AND DANGEROUS STOP. A CRASH WAS AVOIDED. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID BRAKE BOOSTER, YAW SENSOR, AND CPU ERROR. ALL THREE REPLACED OVER A 18 MONTH PERIOD STARTING WITH YAW SENSOR. TOTAL RESULTING IN $3000 OF REPAIRS. I HAVE OLD CPU AND TOYOTA HAS BEEN CONTACTED 6 TIMES AND THEY REFUSE TO ASSIST IN REPAIR COSTS. I FEEL THIS WAS A FAULTY CPU UNIT INSTALLED. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40MPH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OVERDRIVE DID NOT ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS SEEN BY AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO DETERMINED THE OVERDRIVE WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REBUILT.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHENEVER THE CONTACT APPLIES THE BRAKES HE NOTICED THAT THE ABS SYSTEM AND TRACTION CONTROL WOULD ACTIVATE REGARDLESS OF THE DRIVING SURFACE, THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED THAT HE COULD HEAR A SOUND SIMILAR TO LEAKING AIR COMING FROM THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT HAD THE ABS SENSOR AND ALL COMPONENTS OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM REPLACED, HOWEVER THE CONTACT STILL NOTICES THE LEAKING AIR SOUND COMING FROM THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED SINCE IT WAS LAST SERVICED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS APPROXIMATELY 138000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 78000.
VSC LIGHT WAS COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY. VEHICLE(SEQUOIA) WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE SKID CONTROL ECU. THE VSC LIGHT STARTED COMING BACK ON INTERMITTENTLY APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY TOYOTA SAID IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $2400 TO FIX. SINCE THE LIGHTS ONLY CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY WITHOUT ANY OTHER PROBLEMS AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO SPARE I DIDN'T GET THE REPAIRS DONE. WHILE HAVING MY ROTORS TURNED AT THE DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC SAID THEY NOTICED THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON. THEY SAID THEY WORKED ON MY VEHICLE FOR 3 HRS(AT NO CHARGE-JUST DOING ME A FAVOR)) TO TRY AND REMEDY THE VSC LIGHT PROBLEM. WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE WARNING LIGHTS AND ABS LIGHTS WERE COMING ON, I STARTED HEARING WARNING BEEPS, THE CAR STARTED VIBRATING VIOLENTLY AND PULLED TO THE RIGHT. SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME! I PULLED OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. OF COURSE THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS SKID CONTROL ECU AND WOULD COST $2400 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF THIS CAR AND WOULD FIX IT IF I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. 1) OVERLY SENSITIVE TRAC COMPUTER WILL CUT POWER WHEN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC, CAUSING A POTENTIAL SITUATION FOR AN ACCIDENT. 2) TRAC-OFF AND VSC-OFF LIGHTS WILL ILLUMINATE, FAULT CODES SHOW THAT VSC COMPUTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, LEAVING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT TRACTION CONTROL OR STABILITY CONTROL OR ABS BRAKES. MANUFACTURER WILL NOT COVER UNLESS STILL UNDER BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. HAPPENS AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK. *TR
HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT SHUT OFF AFTER THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. ALSO, A BUZZING NOISE COMES FROM THE FUSE BOX WHILE THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON. AS A RESULT OF THE HEADLIGHTS STAYING ON, THE BATTERY RUNS DOWN. THE ONLY WAY TO START SEQUOIA IS TO JUMP/BOOST WITH ANOTHER CAR/BATTERY. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND THE FRONT LEFT BALL JOINT IS MAKING A POPPING NOISE. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME THEY ARE NOT OFFERING A REMEDY CAMPAIGN FOR THE 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THEY HAVE A REMEDY CAMPAIGN ON THE SEQUOIA AND TUNDRA FOR 2002-2004. THEY ARE NOT OFFERING A REMEDY CAMPAIGN FOR THE 2001 SEQUOIA EVEN THOUGH THE FRONT ENDS ARE THE SAME. I AM CONCERNED NOT ONLY FOR MY FAMILY, OTHER OWNERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THAT WALK, RIDE AND DRIVE ON OUR PUBLIC ROADS. WHEN THE BALL JOINTS FAILS THE VEHICLE WILL WRECK AND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES TO ALL PEOPLE IN THE VEHICLE OR CLOSE TO THE ACCIDENT. DRIVING SOUTH BOUND ON RT. 301 IN BOWIE, MD. BEGAN TO SLOW AND MOVED RIGHT INTO THE EXIT LANE TOWARDS MOUNT OAK RD. WEST BOUND. HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LEANED OVER TOWARD THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT WHEEL. IT BECAME EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKING POWER WAS GREATLY REDUCED AND THE SEQUOIA WAS BASICALLY UNCONTROLLABLE. WAS ABLE TO STEER SLIGHT TOWARDS THE RIGHT TO AVOID BEING PULLED BACK INTO TRAFFIC. IMPACTED A SAFETY MEDIAN, DESIGNED TO PROTECT CARS ENTERING THE HIGHWAY FROM THOSE EXITING THE HIGHWAY, AND CROSSED COMPLETELY OVER IT THE WHEEL HUB HAD SEPARATED FROM THE LOWER CONTROL ARM. THE TIRE, WHEEL RIM, HUB, STEERING RACK, STEERING TIE ROD, CONTROL ARMS, BRAKE LINES, DRIVE AXLE, ETC. HAD ALL BEEN DAMAGE SEVERELY. PICTURES OF THE SCENE SHOW A SINGLE SKID MARK FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL CLEARLY. THE SINGLE SKID MARK INDICATES THAT ONE WHEEL WAS NOT ROTATING AT ALL, WHILE THE OTHER THREE WERE ROTATING FREELY, OR UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. I FOUND NO MY 2001 RECALLS. I LATER FOUND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 05V225000 INDICATING A RECALL DUE TO FAILED BALL JOINTS IN THE 2002-2004 SEQUOIA. THE SEQUOIA MODEL WAS FIRST AVAILABLE AS A MY2001 AND INITIAL INTRODUCTION WAS LATE IN 2000. MY2002 STARTED IN THE LATE SUMMER OF 2001. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SO QUICKLY AFTER THE MODEL INTRODUCTION TOYOTA WOULD MAKE MAJOR CHANGES IN THE SUSPENSION AND/OR BALL JOINTS. IT WAS BY LUCK ONLY THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO THE SUSPENSION FAILURE, TOYOTA NEEDS TO REACT QUICKLY AND NOTIFY MY2001 OWNERS OF THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT. NOT ONLY DID THE SUSPENSION FAIL, CAUSING THE WHEEL TO MOVE BACK AND JAM INTO THE REAR WHEEL WELL AREA, BUT IT SEEMED TO CAUSE AN ALMOST TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY. I BELIEVE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES RESPONDED TO THE LOCKED FRONT WHEEL BY MODULATING THE POWER TO THE OTHER WHEELS RESULTING IN LESS BRAKING FORCE. *JB
ONE COMPLAINT IS THE TRANSMISSION FAILED STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE THEN FAILED TO MOVE ANY MORE HAD TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION AT MY COST WITH NO HELP OFFERED BY THE DEALER. AND FAILED AT 90,000 MILES. NEVER NOTICED ANYTHING LEADING TO THIS REGULAR MAINTENANCE DONE. *TR

UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION ON A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA REGISTERED TO A MOTHER OF 4. INCIDENT OCCURRED ON I85 AT MILE-MARKER 104 IN BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH CLEAR, DRY CONDITIONS. SQUEALING BRAKES AND SEVERE WARPED ROTORS CAUSING VIBRATIONS WHILE BRAKING. CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS NOTIFIED THAT CALIPERS AND ROTORS ARE INSUFFICIENT FOR THE VEHICLE. TSB ISSUED TO REPAIR IF UNDER WARRANTY, OTHERWISE COST IS $2000. AFTER ONE WEEK OF DRIVING, FOLLOWING A REPLACEMENT OF THE ROTORS AND PADS, NOTICE AN EXTREME VIBRATION. DISCOVERED THAT THE ROTORS ARE HEATING UP REAL FAST. NOTIFIED THAT THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE BRAKES TO FAIL IF NOT FIXED PROPERLY. MY SAFETY COULD BE JEOPARDIZED BY THIS DEFECT. VEHICLE COST IS $40K WITH ADDITIONAL COSTS TO CORRECT A KNOWN DEFECT DISCOVERED AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRES. I EXPECT MORE FOR MY INITIAL EXPENSE. DIAGNOSTIC CHECK OF VEHICLE REVEALS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND/OR A SENSOR WITHIN THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY THAT IS PRONE TO INTERMITTENT FAILURE ON THIS VEHICLE. REPLACEMENT OF THE PARTS IN QUESTION ARE PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE (OVER $1,000) AND ONLY COVERED UP TO 3YR/36K MILE ON THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A DEFINITE FAILURE TREND PRESENT IN THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THEM, GIVEN THE TSBS THAT EXIST FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE LAST TIME THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED, SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE, HAD RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE SERVICE TECH INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THAT TOYOTAS REGIONAL FACTORY TECHNICIAN NEEDED TO VERIFY THEIR OWN ASSESSMENT AND APPROVE THE WARRANTY WORK TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM HE ALSO STATED VERY SPECIFICALLY THAT THEY HAD NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8TH, 2004 GLENN KASHIMA, SERVICE DIRECTOR FROM TUSTIN TOYOTA CALLED ME. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE FACTORY TECHNICIAN HAD BEEN OUT TO LOOK AT THE CAR. HE HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, AND DETERMINED THAT THE CAR WAS OPERATING WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS. HE TOLD ME THAT I COULD PICK THE CAR UP. I MADE IT CLEAR THAT THIS WAS UNACCEPTABLE. FIRST THEY TELL ME THAT THE HAVE IDENTIFIED A PROBLEM, HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE, AND IT WILL BE COVERED BY MY WARRANTY. THEN THEY TELL ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13TH, 2004 I WENT TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I SPOKE WITH GLENN KASHIMA. HE AGAIN REITERATED THAT THE CAR WAS OPERATING WITHIN SPECS. THIS IN SPITE OF HIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE FACT THAT HIS OWN TECHNICIAN HAD DUPLICATED THE PROBLEM, ETC. HE TOLD ME THAT HE HAD ASKED HIS TECHNICIAN IF HIS FOOT HAD BEEN PUSHING STRONGLY ON THE BRAKE WHEN HE HAD DUPLICATED THE PROBLEM, OR ONLY LIGHTLY ON THE BRAKE. GLENN TOLD ME THAT HE HAD BEEN ASKED THIS BY THE TOYOTA FACTORY GUY. HE DESCRIBED THAT HIS OWN TOYOTA TRUCK DOES THAT..THAT IF YOUR FOOT IS NOT PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKE THAT WILL HAPPEN. I ASKED, ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT IF THE CAR IS STOPPED, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE SUFFICIENTLY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE STOPPED, THAT THE VEHICLE WILL LURCH FORWARD WHEN THE A/C ENGAGES? HE NODDED HIS HEAD AND SAID,"YES."*AK
FAILURE REGUARDING TO TIRES....IN PARTICULAR TO TOYO TIRES / OPEN COUNTRY, 265/R70/16. HE PROBLEM IS A SAFETY ISSUE, THE TIRES ARE CRACKING IN THE TREAD GROOVES. AND NOT JUST ONE TIRE ALL FOUR TIRES, TO TOP THAT ALL OFF THESE ARE THE SECOND SET....THE FIRST ONE'S WERE ALREADY REPLACED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE ORIGINALS HAD ONLY LESS THAN 10,000MILES WHEN I, HAD NOTICED THE CRACKING, TOYO TIRES REPLACED ALL FOUR BECAUSE OF THE DEFECT( ALL FOUR TIRE WERE CRACKED). THE REPLACEMENT SET ALSO CRACKED THE SAME WAY, BUT I, HAD JUST NOTICED THE DEFECT....ALMOST 45,000MILES LATER (AGAIN ALL FOUR TIRES ARE CRACKED THE SAME WAY. I HAVE BEEN TOLD DIFFERENT AND CHANGING STORIES. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW ARE THESE TIRES SAFE....I'M WORRIED ABOUT MY FAMILIES SAFETY, ARE THESE TIRES GOING TO EXPLODE AS THEY DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY(WE HAVE A LARGE SUV). THIS DEFECT SHOULD BE CHECKED OUT. I CAN SEND A COPY OF THE BILLS AND THE AUTHORIZATION NUMBERS FOR THE REPLACEMENTS (SECOND SET / ALL FOUR). ALSO I AM WILLING TO SEND THE TIRES.
