THE LATCH ON THE TAILGATE ON MY 2001 SEQUOIA HAS NOW BROKE 3 TIMES. TODAY IT WAS ACTING FUNNY. I BROUGHT IT INTO SCHAUMBURG TOYOTA. INSTEAD OF WARRANTING IT SINCE IT WAS REPLACED FEBRUARY 20, 2008, THEY PUT WD40 ON IT AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. TONIGHT I OPENED MY BACK DOOR AND IT BROKE AGAIN. WE BROUGHT IT BACK IN AND THEY WON'T COVER IT. *TR
THE "VSC OFF" AND VSC SKID LIGHTS CAME ON AND HAS REMAINED ON TO THE PRESENT DATE. WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON ALL VSC FUNCTIONS STOPPED. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. REPAIR WAS NOT UNDER ANY WARRANTY. AN ESTIMATE OF APPROXIMATELY $2200 WAS GIVEN TO REPLACE THE VEHICLES ECU. NO REPAIR WAS MADE. OCCASIONALLY THE VEHICLE WOULD LOSE POWER UNDER MODERATE ACCELERATION FOR A BRIEF PERIOD (USUALLY LESS THAN 2 SECONDS) AS IF SOMETHING HAS CUT POWER 20-30%. I SUSPECT IT WAS THE VSC SYSTEM TRYING TO CUT ON OR ENGAGE. THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED FOR SOME TIME. VEHICLE NOW HAS 178000 MILES. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE, EVERY SERVICE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL UNIT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE FAILURE HAS NOT RECURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
THE VSC COMPUTER ON MY TOYOTA SEQUOIA IS ACTING UP AS MANY MEMBERS ON THE TUNDRASOLUTIONS MESSAGE BOARD HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES AND BASICALLY TO FIX IT THE WHOLE COMPUTER NEEDS REPLACED FOR A HEALTHY SUM OF MONEY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ECU (ENGINE CONTROL UNIT) FAILED. THE TRACTION, SKID CONTROL, BRAKE, AND ENGINE LIGHTS WERE ALL ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. HE EXPERIENCED NO VEHICLE PERFORMANCE ISSUES, BUT WAS ALERTED TO THE FAILURE BECAUSE OF THE LIGHTS. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE ENGINE COMPUTER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $2,400. THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT ASSIST. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 105,000.
WITH NO PRIOR WARNING SYMPTOMS, THE "VSC TRAC" "VSC OFF" BRAKE" AND ABS" LIGHT COME ON IN MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. IT STARTED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO JUST ONCE IN A WHILE, BUT NOW IT HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY TIME I PUT THE CAR IN MOTION. IT SEEMED TO ME AT FIRST THAT IT HAPPENED MOST FREQUENTLY WHEN THE WEATHER IS COLD (THE HIGH 30S IS ABOUT AS COLD AS IT EVER GETS HERE, THOUGH.) THE LIGHT ON THE DASH INDICATING VCS/TRAC, VCS/SC (SKID CONTROL), ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ARE SHOWING FAILURES. THE DEALER WANTS $ 2100.00 TO FIX. *TR
VSC / TRAC CONTROL SYSTEM FAILURE ON 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. *TR
TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC AND BRAKE ARE INTERMITTENTLY COMING ON. *TR
2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA- 48K MILES..VEHICLES TRACTION CONTROL AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING THE CAR. JUST BEFORE THE LIGHTS COME ON, THE CAR SHAKES AND MAKES A GRINDING NOISE, PULLS TO THE RIGHT, AND LOSES POWER. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE THE CAR. ANYWHERE FROM 1MIN TO 15MIN FROM THE START OF DRIVING. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS ONCE THE VEHICLE IS UP TO SPEED, WE HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN IN TO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE CAR PULLED SO VIOLENTLY AND DIDN'T HAVE POWER. THE CAR WILL SHAKE AND PULL AND THE ONLY WAY WE'VE GOTTEN IT TO STOP IS BY STEPPING ON THE BRAKE AND REDUCING SPEED (LESS THAN 30 MPH). AFTER WE REDUCE THE SPEED, THE TRAC AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON AND THE CAR IS DRIVABLE UNTIL YOU CYCLE THE IGNITION. IT'S PRETTY SCARY. MY FATHER-IN-LAW TOOK THE CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS IS SKID CONTROL ECU FAULTY, MUST REPLACE. DTC CODES C1363 AND C1234. THE COST THEY QUOTED HIM WAS $2415.99 + $200 LABOR. WE HAVEN'T DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE NEW ECU BECAUSE WE FEEL ITS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY OR SHOULD BE A TSB. I'VE SINCE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT OTHER SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOYOTA'S RESPONSE IS TO JUST REPLACE THE ECU. SOME OF THEM EVEN GOT INTO ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND SHAKING. *TR

VEHICLE OFF AND ON THE STABILITY CONTROL KEEPS MALFUNCTIONING AND IS DOING QUIT OFTEN TOOK IT IN AND DEALERS SAYS IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME BUT WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT COST ALOT OF MONEY TO GET IT FIX AND WHEN IT COMES ON THE HIGHWAY TRUCK STALLS AND IS VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY CAUSE IT CAUSES IT TO STALL OR SLOWS IT DOWN IT OCCURS OFTEN. *TR
ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, THE VSC/ABS/SKID LIGHT CAME ON A FEW DAYS. WE TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY INDICATED THAT THE VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL ECU HAS FAILED. WE ARE TOLD THAT WE NEED TO REPLACE THIS AT A COST OF $2,400. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM, CATCHING FIRE, ETC. AND THIS PROBLEM IS LIFE THREATENING. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA SHOULD STEP UP AND FIX THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT CHARGING ME. *TR
THE SEQUOIA HAS A VEHICLE SKID CONTROL (VSC) THAT IS SUPPOSED TO ACTIVATE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS INVOLVED IN A SLIDE OR SKID OR SOME KIND. HOWEVER, THE VSC TENDS TO ACTIVATE ON IT'S OWN AND DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE ACTIVATION CAUSES THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE TO SLOW THE WHEEL CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO PULL DRASTICALLY TO THE RIGHT FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES AT 30-45MPH ON SMOOTH, STRAIGHT ROADWAY. IT IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE AND A CRASH IS BOUND TO HAPPEN. I FOUND SEVERAL MORE COMPLAINTS ON THE ISSUE ON-LINE AT TUNDRASOLUTIONS.COM. I STILL OWN THIS VEHICLE AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. TOYOTA SAYS THE UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THE PARTS MAN STATED HE SELL OR REPLACES 7-8 VSC UNITS PER WEEK. *TR
2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA 103K HAS HAD THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHT COME ON INTERMITTENTLY FOR THE PAST YEAR. HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN AT ABOUT 30K AND THE COMPUTER WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. WHEN IT HAPPENS IT IS JUST DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN IDEAL CONDITIONS. IT WILL GO OFF WHEN YOU SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTART IT. AFTER LOOKING ON THE INTERNET I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. I WANT IT TO BE SAFE WHEN MY WIFE AND KIDS ARE IN THE CAR AND I HAVE LOST FAITH IN THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR
FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUIOA'S VSC, BRAKE, AND ABS LIGHTS ARE "ON" AND THE ABS AND VSC SYSTEM NO LONGER WORKS. A CERTIFIED DEALER (FIORE TOYOTA; 1480 SOUTH MAIN ST; FALL RIVER, MA, 02724) ATTEMPTED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED THE BRAKES (FRONT/REAR) AND THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR AND A TUNE UP FOR $1300, BUT THE VSC, ABS, AND BRAKE LIGHTS ARE STILL ON. FIRORE HAS NO IDEA WHAT TO DO AND CAN NO LONGER HELP ME FIX THE PROBLEM. I NOW DO NOT HAVE ABS AND STABILITY CONTROL IN THE SNOWY NORTHEAST! *TR
VIOLENT SHAKING OF VEHICLE WHILE MERGING ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH. FAILURE OF VSC ON 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. REPLACED 3 PARTS....YAW SENSOR, BRAKE BOOSTER AND CPU. OLD CPU PART IS IN MY OFFICE. SPENT CLOSE TO $2000 ON REPAIRS AND TOYOTA'S HQ IN CALIFORNIA RESPONSE WAS "OUT OF WARRANTY". *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT A RATE OF 70MPH THE VSC TRAC AND TRAC CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CAR DECREASED IN SPEED AND VEERED TO THE RIGHT, CAUSING ME TO MOMENTARILY LOOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. PER OWNER'S MANUAL TOOK CAR INTO DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTIC. PER CODES OBTAINED VIA DIAGNOSTIC DEALER SUGGESTS REPLACING YAW CONTROL SENSOR AND ECU. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE MYSELF IT SEEMS TO BEAN ISSUE WITH THE 2001 SEQUOIA AND ITS ECU, YAW CONTROL SENSOR, AND THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR THAT COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS HARM OR INJURY IF NOT CORRECTED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH THERE WAS A LOUD THUMP IN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL AREA, AUTOMATICALLY THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE WAS APPLIED . THE VSC OFF AND TRACTION LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND RELEASED IT, WHICH ALLOWED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE TO RELEASE AND THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY AGAIN. FOUR DAYS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE VSC OFF AND TRACTION LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE WHILE DRIVING, BUT THEN DIM AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY DISABLED THE VSC SENSOR TO PREVENT THE FAILURE FROM RECURRING. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 47,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,700. UPDATED 09/10/08. *LJ UPDATED 09/12/08. *JB JUN 10, 2008, WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH THERE WAS A LOUD "THUMP" IN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL AREA, AUTOMATICALLY THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE WAS APPLIED, THE VEHICLE VEERED TO THE RIGHT, THE VSC OFF AND THE VSC TRACTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS WELL AS A MOMENTARY INDICATION OF THE VEHICLE SWERVE INDICATOR CAME ON, I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, SLOWED AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM. A VISUAL INSPECTION INDICATED NO APPARENT PROBLEM. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THE VSC. OFF AND THE VSC TRACTION INDICATORS REMAINED ILLUMINATED, THE VEHICLE APPEARED TO HANDLE NORMALLY AT SPEED SO I CONTINUED ON MY TRIP FROM VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. TO DENVER, CO. I COULD NOT TURN THE ILLUMINATED LIGHTS OFF WITH THE MANUAL SWITCH. ONCE I ARRIVED IN DENVER, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MOUNTAIN STATES TOYOTA WHERE THE YAW RATE SENSOR WAS UNPLUGGED. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND THE SENSOR REMAINS UNPLUGGED
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD STARTING HEARING WEIRD NOISE COMING FROM ENGINE ARE. I MADE IT HOME AND NEXT DAY I WAS DRIVING TRIED TO ACELERATE AND IT WOULDN'T . ENGINE KEPT RUNNING BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE HAD TRUCK TOWED HOME(62 MILES) CAR IS A 2001 WITH 118000 MILES NEVER WOULD THINK THIS WOULD HAPPEN TO TOYOTA..PLS HELP. *TR
I BEGAN TO NOTICE OVER A YEAR AGO THAT THE HEADLIGHT HIGH-BEAM INDICATOR WAS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF INTERMITTENT OPERATION IT CEASED ILLUMINATING ALTOGETHER. MY LOCAL MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA HAD TOLD HIM THAT THE ENTIRE COMBINATION METER WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED TO REPAIR IT (THIS WAS NOT ENTIRELY ACCURATE). I RECENTLY FOUND ONLINE THAT A NUMBER OF OWNERS REPORTED THAT THEIR HIGH BEAM INDICATORS WERE NOT WORKING, AND THAT A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN HAD BEEN PUBLISHED TO REPAIR IT. WHEN I PULLED UP THE SERVICE BULLETIN I NOTED THAT IT REQUIRED A WIRING CHANGE IN ADDITION TO REPLACEMENT OF A VERY EXPENSIVE ECU. IT IS MY CONTENTION THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIR OF THIS EXPENSIVE MODIFICATION SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS WIRED IMPROPERLY TO BEGIN WITH AND SINCE THERE ARE SUBSTANTIAL SAFETY IMPLICATIONS FOR VEHICLES DRIVING WITH HEADLIGHTS ON BRIGHT WHEN THE DRIVER IS NOT AWARE OF IT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN THE VEHICLE WOULD DRIFT TO THE RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE ABS SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55000.
VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL/TRACTION CONTROL COMPUTER DEFECT. *TR
I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AUTO SR5 AND THERE ARE 5 LIGHTS ON STEADY. THE VSC,TRACK,STABILITY,ABS, AND BRAKE LIGHTS. THE LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ON FOR A FEW YEARS. THE CAR DRIVES FINE, BUT THE ABS AND THE TRACK DOES NOT WORK. THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER HAS BEEN CHANGED, WITH NO HELP. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALER, BUT HAVE NOT BEEN THERE BECAUSE OF THE MONEY THEY WANT TO CHECK OUT THE CAR. FROM READING ON THE INTERNET, THE PROBLEM SOUNDS LIKE A VSC UNIT. I SCANNED THE CAR, AND THERE ARE NO CODES. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE MIGHT BE A RECALL ON THE VSC UNIT. THE DEALER SAYS NO, BUT I AM FILING A COMPLAINT ABOUT SAFETY BECAUSE THE VSC AND THE ABS DOES NOT WORK. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR
1. APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. 2. BRAKE(!), VSC, TRAC OFF AND ABS WARNING LAMPS ARE ALL ON. FAILURE OCCURS EACH TIME THE VEHICLE IS USED. THE FAILURE OF THESE SYSTEMS RENDER THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, SKID CONTROL AND 4WD SYSTEMS INOPERABLE. THIS CREATES AN UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITION THAT MAY RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. 3. FAILURE HAS NOT YET BEEN RESOLVED. DISCUSSION WITH MANUFACTURER HAS YIELDED NO RESULTS. LOCAL DEALER HAS BEEN RELUCTANT TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM AS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. COST OF REPLACEMENT IS CURRENTLY PROHIBITIVE FOR CONSUMER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS EXCESSIVE RUST UNDERNEATH THE CARRIAGE AND FRAME OF HER VEHICLE, FROM FRONT TO BACK. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE RUST WAS NORMAL AND NOT AN ISSUE. THE TOYOTA MANUFACTURER ALSO STATED THAT IT WAS NOT AN ISSUE AND NO REPAIRS COULD BE PERFORMED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
WHILE DRIVING 40MPH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OVERDRIVE DID NOT ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS SEEN BY THE TOYOTA DEALER AND AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO DETERMINED THE OVERDRIVE WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REBUILT. I SHOULD OF LOOKED IN THIS WEBSITE BEFORE I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE PLEASE HAVE TOYOTA RECALL THIS DEFECT AND REPAIR OUR VEHICLES. I LOVE THE CAR, I HATE THIS COSTLY PROBLEM. TOYOTA SHOULD MAINTAIN US FAITHFUL IN THEIR QUALITY AND HONESTY BY REPAIRING OUR VEHICLE BEING IT WAS FIRST GENERATION. *TR
THE BACK HATCH HAS BROKEN 5 TIMES IN THE LAST 5 YEARS. IT WILL NOT LAST MORE THAN 12 MONTHS AT A TIME. VERY COSTLY TO REPAIR AND VERY DISAPPOINTING NOT TO BE ABLE TO USE THE HATCH WHEN BROKEN. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAILING AND HAVE NOTICED NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS ON SAME MODEL VEHICLE. MANUFACTURER APPARENTLY HAS DONE NOTHING TO ASSIST THE CONSUMER WITH THE COST TO REPLACE. *TR
UNDERSIZE BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE CAUSES HIGH HEAT AND WARPING OF THE BRAKE ROTORS RESULTING IN VIOLENT SHAKING AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONTROL. *TR

MY VSC ENGAGES AT TIME WHILE TRYING TO MERGE ON TO THE INTERSTATE WITH DRY PAVEMENT, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOOSE POWER, I HAD A TRACTOR TRAILER JUST ABOUT RUN IN TO THE BACK OF MY SEQUOIA BECAUSE OF THIS. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED . *TR

NORMAL VEHICLE USAGE WITH ONLY 66,000 MILES AND ALL ABS, VSC WARNING LIGHTS ARE ON WITH ANTI-LOCK AND ANTI-SKID COMPUTER DISABLED RESULTING IN NO ABS OR SKID CONTROL. DEALER REPORTS TO ME THAT IT IS A $2,200 "COMPUTER" NEEDING REPLACED, ONLY 6,000 MILES OUT OF POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE CONTACT NOTICED RUST UNDER IT TOWARDS THE REAR. A FEW YEARS LATER, WHILE HAVING THE VEHICLE SERVICED, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE UNDERCARRIAGE WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. SHE WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER FRACTURED AND THERE WAS AN UNKNOWN PIPE LEAKING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE LEAKING PIPE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE SEVERE RUSTING AND FRACTURED HAND BRAKE WERE NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 75,000.
ABOUT 1YR AGO VSC TRAC, TRAC OFF, ABS, & BRAKE LIGHTS ALL COME ON AND STAY ON. MY SYSTEM FOR THESE BRAKING FEATURES NO LONGER WORK. I FOUND OUT FROM RESEARCH THIS IS VERY COMMON ON THE 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT I OWN AND WAS TOLD TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO HELP GET IT RECALLED BY TOYOTA. THE REPAIR IS 2 SEPARATE COMPUTERS THAT CAN BE AS MUCH AS 2200 DOLLARS TO REPLACE. *TR
WE HAD A 100,000 MILE SERVICE WITH A TOYOTA DEALER. SHORTLY AFTER THE VSC/ABS LIGHTS STARTED COMING ON WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED IN DRIVE. THEY INSIST IT IS THE SKID CONTROL AND ECU COMPUTERS THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE IDENTIFIED A NUMBER OF OTHER CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. (VSC) PROBLEM ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WAS TOLD THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR IS BAD/ NOT WORKING AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.. *TR
I WAS DROPPING OFF MY WIFE AND 4 MONTH-OLD TWINS @ THE AIRPORT. SHE WAS GOING ON A VACATION W/ HER MOM AND SISTERS. WHILE GETTING HER CHECKED IN, OUR 9-YEAR-OLD TWIN GIRLS AND 3 YEAR-OLD GIRL WERE SITTING IN THE CAR. WE WERE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE CAR BUT COULD NOT SEE IN THE BACK W/ THE DARK TINTED WINDOWS. IN THE MEAN TIME, ONE DAUGHTER, WHO WAS SITTING IN THE 3RD ROW, MIDDLE SEAT OF OUR 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, BECAME TANGLED IN THE AUTOMATICALLY LATCHED SEATBELT. AS SHE ATTEMPTED TO GET FREE, SHE ONLY GOT FURTHER TWISTED. HER TWIN SISTER THEN YELLED TO US, HER PARENTS. WE OPENED THE TRUNK AND FOUND HER PURPLE AND STRUGGLING TO BREATHE. THE WORST THING IS THAT WE COULDN'T UNLATCH THE BELT, NOR COULD WE UNTANGLE HER. WE STARTED YELLING FOR SOMETHING SHARP TO CUT THE BELT (THE AIRPORT IS NOT THE BEST PLACE TO FIND SOMETHING SHARP) AND AT THE SAME TIME WE GRABBED THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION TO ATTEMPT TO STICK INTO THE LATCH IN HOPES OF UNLATCHING THE BELT IN AN ALTERNATIVE WAY. IN WHAT SEEMED AN ETERNITY OF HELPLESSNESS, THE SKY CAP FOUND SCISSORS AND CUT THE BELT... AT THE SAME TIME, I RELEASED THE BELT FROM THE LATCH W/ THE HELP OF THE KEY. JUST AS OUR DAUGHTER PASSED OUT, WE WERE ABLE TO UNTANGLE HER FROM THE BELT. FORTUNATELY, WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY GET HER BREATHING AGAIN. POLICE AND PARAMEDICS WERE CALLED. A REPORT WAS FILED. ALL COMMENTED ON THE POOR DESIGN OF THIS MIDDLE BELT! HOPEFULLY OUR NEAR TRAGEDY WITH A HAPPY ENDING WILL PREVENT ANYONE ELSE FROM A TRAGIC ENDING! VSC AND VSC TRAC WARNING LIGHT STAYING ON TOYOTA SEQUOIA TURNING TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM OFF. VEHICLE CAN LOOSE TRACTION DURING DIFFERENT ROAD CONDITIONS. OVER $2000 TO FIX FROM DEALER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, WHICH INDICATED THAT THE ABS AND ANTI-SKID SYSTEM FAILED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE ABS; HOWEVER, THERE WAS FAILURE WITH THE ANTI-SKID SYSTEM. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE ABS COMPUTER FAILED. THE DEALER MADE THE REPAIR AND PAID FOR 30% OF THE PARTS. THERE HAD BEEN NO OTHER FAILURES SINCE THE REPAIR, BUT THE CONTACT FELT THAT IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,800.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE TRACTION CONTROL ACTIVATED AND PULLED THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT WHICH CAUSED THE REAR BRAKES TO WEAR; A CRASH ALMOST OCCURRED AS A RESULT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE O2 SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE 02 SENSOR BUT 150 MILES LATER, THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED AGAIN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 137,000.
OWNER OF 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT INFREQUENTLY HAS AN ISSUE WHERE OUT OF NOWHERE THE VSC DEVICE ACTIVATES. THE VEHICLES FRONT LEFT WHEEL STARTS TO GRIND AND YOU CAN HEAR THE DEVICE GOING FRANTICALLY UNTIL IT STOPS ON ITS OWN. NORMALLY IT IS BRIEF AND THE 'VSC OFF' LIGHT COMES ON, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHERE IT HAS HAPPENED AT HIGH SPEED CAUSING DISTRESSING SITUATION. TOYOTA DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT IT COULD BE A DEFECTIVE CONTROL MODULE, BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND AN OBVIOUS CAUSE. THEY CLEANED THE SENSORS AT THE WHEELS AND WHERE THE CONNECTION HOOKS TO THE DASHBOARD FOR VSC OFF BUTTON. I WROTE TOYOTA IN HOPES THAT THEY WOULD OFFER ASSISTANCE, BUT THEY RESPONDED WITH THE TERMS OF THE WARRANTY AND THAT THERE WAS NO ISSUE. *TR
WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HILL AND THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WENT CRAZY WE SKIDDED OUT AND THEN THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL/SLIP LIGHTS WENT ON. THEY STAYED ON UNTIL WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACE SOME BRAKE SENSORS THAT WERE CORRODED. ON THE WAY HOME IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THE TRACTION CONTROL COMPUTER WAS REPORTING THAT THERE WERE STILL BAD SENSORS, BUT THE SENSORS WERE FINE, SO THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE TRACTION CONTROL COMPUTER. AFTER A WEEK IN THE SHOP IT FINALLY CAME BACK WORKING. A TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM SHOULD NOT THROW YOUR CAR OUT OF CONTROL AND RUN YOU OFF THE ROAD. THE DEALER SAID THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEN SO MUCH CORROSION UNDER A VEHICLE BEFORE. THEY SAID THAT THE FRAME, EXHAUST, SPARE TIRE, AND BRAKE COMPONENTS AS WELL AS VARIOUS OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS LOOKED TO HAVE WHAT THEY WOULD CALL EXCESSIVE CORROSION. THEY SAID I SHOULD TAKE IT UP WITH WHOM I BOUGHT IT FROM. I THINK THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE TUNDRAS ARE HAVING WITH CORROSION AND SHOULD BE LOOPED INTO THE SAME INVESTIGATION. THE SEQUOIA, I WAS TOLD WHEN I BOUGHT IT, WAS DESIGNED ON THE SAME FRAME, AND DRIVE TRAIN AS THE TUNDRA WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY THE CORROSION IS EFFECTING SIMILAR BRAKING SYSTEMS AND THE SPARE. I WOULD LOVE FOR SOMEONE TO INVESTIGATE THIS. I WOULD HAVE HATED FOR ANYTHING TO HAPPEN TO MY FAMILY WHICH WAS IN THE CAR WITH ME. *TR
MY VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL LIGHT WENT ON AND MY VSC/TRAC SENSOR AND ABS LIGHTS WERE GOING ON AND OFF FOR ABOUT 5 DAYS. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND I LOST ALL ACCELERATION AND HAD TO PULL OF THE ROAD TWO TIMES OVER A 4 MILE STRETCH. THE FINAL TIME, WHICH CAUSED ME TO GO FOR A REPAIR WAS, AT A STOP SIGN WHERE I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE WHEN MY SKID LIGHT CAME ON AND THE GAS PEDAL BECAME UNRESPONSIVE FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS. I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH AN ONCOMING VEHICLE BUT WAS SCARED AS I HAD MY ONE YEAR OLD IN THE VEHICLE AND FELT HELPLESS. I GOT AN ESTIMATE FROM TWO DEALERS AND ONE CAME IN AT $2,000 STATING THE WHOLE THROTTLE NEEDED REPLACING WITH THE SENSOR. THE SECOND DEALERSHIP SPENT 8 HOURS EXAMINING IT AND DECIDED TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE CONTROL SENSOR AND THIS SEEMED TO FIX IT WITHOUT ANY ADDED EXPENSE. THIS DEALER ONLY CHARGED ME $55 FOR A CHECKUP!! THERE HAVE BEEN NO RECURRENCE OF THIS ISSUE THANK GOD! THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL!! *TR
THE BRAKES ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SHUDDER PERIODICALLY, RESULTING IN AN UNEASY FEELING THAT THE VEHICLE MAY NOT STOP CORRECTLY. *JB
VSC TRAC WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON WHILE DRIVING. IF YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON THEY GO AWAY. I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER SEVERAL TIMES UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THEY COULD NEVER GET IT TO FAIL. THEY TOLD ME TO COME IN WHEN IT IS FAILING AND THEY COULD THEN LOOK AT IT. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON INTERMITTENTLY FOR YEARS NOW. I AM CONCERNED THAT IT WILL FINALLY FAIL COMPLETELY AND MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. WAY TO MANY OF THESE SEQUOIA'S ARE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR THIS TO BE AN ISOLATED ISSUE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND FIX THIS AS IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. TR
FRONT BRAKE VIBRATION ON 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE ISSUE WAS ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER IN TSB BR005-02 AND NEVER TREATED AS RECALL. PREVIOUS OWNER WAS NOT TOLD ABOUT THE TSB AND REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS AT HIS OWN EXPENSE THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER THE WARRANTY AND BRAKE CALIBER ASSEMBLIES AND PADS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED AS PER TSB. TOYOTA IS NOW REFUSING TO REMEDY THE ISSUE CLAIMING THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF THE WARRANTY. *JB
MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAD AN ISSUE WITH "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 77,000 MILES. IT PULLED THE P0155 CODE THAT INDICATED FAILURE OF OXYGEN SENSOR. TOYOTA HAD AT LEAST TWO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON THE ISSUE SHOWING THIS PROBLEM AS WIDELY KNOWN. WHAT IS MORE, ON TUNDRA VEHICLES (THAT HAVE THE SAME ENGINE)TOYOTA RECOGNIZED THE ISSUE BY EXTENDING THE WARRANTY ON SENSORS AND ON THAT SPECIFIC CODE UP TO 90000 MILES. THE REPAIRS COST WAS ALMOST $340, PULLING THE CODE (5 MIN) AND REPLACING THE SENSOR (15 MIN) WAS CHARGED AT 2 HRS OF LABOR. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE REFUSED TO COVER REPAIRS.
