NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2002 Toyota Sequoia. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
They should not have towed my car
I was driving my 2002 Toyota Sequoia on the freeway at approximately 65 mph on the [XXX] when suddenly the vehicle made a beeping noise and the VSC Light and TRAC Light came on. The vehicle suddenly lost control in the wheels and tires and suddenly decelerated out-of-nowhere. Due to the sudden, abrupt movement and loss of control, the vehicle nearly flipped over. It was an extremely dangerous, possibly life-threatening situation. Thankfully, I was attentive and alert and had both hands on the wheel and was able to get the vehicle in control. This happened before two times and this would be the third time. I have taken the vehicle to several different auto repair shops and they have been unable to pin point and fix the problem. Because this issue continues to happen and puts me into dangerous situations repeatedly, I firmly believe that this is a bigger malfunctioning/defect problem that Toyota needs to address and fix. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My vehicle has randomly been flashing vbs/abs/traction control lights. Sometimes nothing happens other than the flashing lights. Other times I’ll be driving & when going around a curve my car makes a beeping noise (sounds like the abs noise activated) & I’ll feel a pulsing under the brake & hear a grinding sound. It doesn’t allow me to brake effectively. Another time I was coming to a stop behind a car at a red light. It was clear as day, roads weren’t wet & I couldn’t have been going over 10 mph. When hitting my brakes, my steering wheel kind of glided back & forth for a sec and it felt like my tires “floated”in the same motion as wheel until it stopped.
Component/System Failed: The frame of my 2002 Toyota Sequoia has severely rusted, resulting in a gaping hole. It is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The rusted frame jeopardizes my safety and renders the vehicle unsafe for use. Confirmation: A mechanic has confirmed the rust issue. Manufacturer Inspection: Toyota has not inspected my Sequoia’s frame. Warning Signs: There were no warning lamps or messages related to frame rust prior to the failure; it became evident during my recent inspection. The gaping hole in my Sequoia’s frame is not due to normal wear and tear but rather Toyota’s poor manufacturing practices. Shockingly, Toyota issued a “limited service campaign” for similar rust issues in other vehicles, but I was never informed. This lack of transparency is unacceptable. It is clear that Toyota’s decision to implement a limited service campaign, rather than a comprehensive recall, reflects a blatant disregard for the safety and satisfaction of its customers. By prioritizing cost-cutting measures over ethical responsibility, Toyota has failed to uphold its duty to consumers and the people who sustain its business. Toyota’s actions have revealed a disturbing trend of prioritizing profits over people. The company’s failure to adequately address known issues with rusted frames speaks volumes about its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Despite numerous complaints and documented cases of frame rust, Toyota’s response has been inadequate. I urge Toyota to take immediate action. Inspect and replace my Sequoia’s frame promptly. Prioritize consumers over profits. Restore my faith in the brand that I once trusted.
Advance rust on car frame
While driving on a curved road, the vehicle made a grinding sound with flashing VSC off and Trac off lights, as it pulled violently to the right and almost ran off the road with my two children in the back seat. This was an extremely scary incident. I 1. While driving on a curved road, the vehicle made a grinding sound with flashing VSC off and Trac off lights, as it pulled violently to the right and almost ran off the road with my two children in the back seat. This was an extremely scary incident. I do understand that many first generation Sequoia owners have reported similar incidents and that there were no recalls, however, I think this is a serious enough issue that will cost innocent people their lives. I was able to pull a reading from the OBD2 and it says there is a fault with the Yaw Rate Sensor. Please help before this causes someone's death. The frame and attached components of the 2002 Sequoia are rusting at alarming rates. Seemingly surface quickly turned into structurally penetrating rust (I.e. holes in the frame rails). Additionally rocker panels and wheel arches show signs of significant penetrating rust. Pieces of rusted metal were found under the car on my driveway recently.
Frame of vehicle is rusting. Never reserved any recall notifications. Called toyota supervisor said not covered missed deadline. Now have to pay $2000 + for undercoating. Toyota should pay for it they are refusing. I am not the only one not being g notified.
To whom it may concern, I recently purchased a 2002 Toyota sequoia. I brought the truck to a local shop for a (overall assessment of the vehicle) since I just Purchased it. The shop owner ( I have their name address if needed). The chassis is rusty and has holes sue to rust. If someone can get back to me It’s much appreciated
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia equipped with Michelin Tires, Tire Line: Latitude Tour, Tire Size: P265/70/R16, DOT Number: APJ6001X1814. The contact stated he was informed at a State Inspection that the vehicle had failed the inspection because there was a large crack in the tread of all four tires. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 13T006000 (Tires); however, the tire size was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the tires were not covered. The tires were replacement tires. The tires were not replaced. The tire failure mileage was approximately 33,000. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle made an abnormal grinding sound and hesitated to respond. The contact depressed the brake pedal a second time, and the vehicle stopped. The ABS warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving and depressing the brake pedal. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
While driving on a highway at about 60 mph, my vehicle made a loud grinding noise while the steering felt very difficult to control and then the VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF lights both came on. I got off the highway and pulled over to a parking lot to inspect the vehicle, but I did not see anything that would cause the vehicle to do that. After a few minutes, I restarted the vehicle and while driving on local roads to get home, the same thing happened again. I was extremely worried for the safety of my wife and children in the vehicle. After reading a few Toyota owners threads online, this seems to be a very familiar pattern with these Toyota Sequoias, and I strongly believe that this will result in very serious injuries or possible deaths if Toyota does not issue a recall to fix the problem causing such dangers for drivers. Please investigate the matter to save lives. Thank you!
Rack and pinion rusted out and had to be replaced. It cracked in the middle of the highway and left me inching to safety. Never fully recovered 186k, frame is fully rusted and will not pass inspection due to faulty oxygen sensors and excessive rust and corrosion. Will need to replace exhaust to input a new sensor at 4k Vechicle is fully operable and functional but cannot pass inspection without the safety of rust treatment or replacement It’s a great vechicle but unfortunate that the 2002 series is left out of the recall . There are a lot of early generations that have these issues and although the trucks are reliable and have a long life , are undriveable because they can’t pass inspection. Please consider extended the rust recall to 2001-2003 Sequoias. This was my grandfathers truck and really would like to keep his memory in the family and drive my grandfathers truck as it still runs perfectly but has on going issues with rust and frame issues . There was an extended warranty for 2002 Sequoias that expired in 2014. This is a point where most Sequioas weren’t experiencing this issue. Dealership or recall will not honor and denied any claim for rust It is unfortunate because I am now disabled and love my Sequoia so much and was hoping to drive to appointments and gain my health back. It has become more than I am able to afford to fix an entire frame of the vehicle. It’s evident that early generations all that his issue but has not been honored for repair. I’ve repaired things over the years with hopes to pass inspection and now have insight as to what the real issue is. The excessive rust and damage to the frame.
On parkway 50 to 55 mph driver side ball joint broke. Truck could of flipped or hit another vehicle. Could of caused damage to my body or death. No warning of impending breakage. I do have pics of broken balljoint and it did cause damage to driverside fender. Frame is rusting. Worried about frame unsafe could brake at any time. Toyota refuses to check and replace.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that upon coming to a complete stop, the traction control system would independently activate, causing the vehicle to suddenly stop upon acceleration. The contact stated that the traction control light would intermittently illuminate during the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure and they informed him that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The contact was referred to NHTSA for assistance. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 270,535.
The frame of the vehicle has severe rust and now has holes in the frame, making it unsafe to drive and possibly causing an accident. Meticulous care has been taken of this vehicle and it is never taken off road or abused. I’ve had several other vehicles and have never had this frame rust safety issue.
The frame is rusting out in the key places needs to be replaced or remedied for future vehicles
While driving around 50 mph, the traction control and vsc warning lights illuminated and the brakes started locking up, which made me seem like the traction control kicked in. The front wheels started seizing and the vehicle started jerking in middle of the highway. I had to pull over and have a cousin pick up my parents that were riding in the car and had to restart the vehicle. I was able to drive it home with the problem happening again right as I was taking my exit to my home.
The left rear frame broke away from rear sway bar. I was just leaving my house when I heard a thunk. I noticed the problem when I turned onto the faster road as I accelerated the whole backend moved right, pushing the front end left (into oncoming traffic). Letting up on the accelerator cased the reverse to happen, the back end swung left and the front turned right. So, glad it happened slower streets and not the highway. There was a limited service recall on this model to coat with a rust proofing paint and we had the service done in 2012. This failure would have probably killed someone if it had happened on the freeway or cloverleaf. These vehicles should be either repaired by Toyota or off the road.
I WENT TO THE MECHANIC TO HAVE MY WHEELS ROTATED; HE SAID THE ENTIRE FRAME IS RUSTED OUT AND MAY BE A DANGER TO DRIVE. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO AS THERE ISN'T AN EASY FIX TO REPLACING THE FRAME. THE MECHANIC SAID THE ONLY FIX IS REPLACING THE FRAME. I HAVE A FAMILY OF 8 PEOPLE WHO DEPEND ON THIS VEHICLE
DRIVER'S SEAT BELT BUCKLE WILL COME UNBUCKLED WHILE DRIVING, THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING AND I IHAVE HAD TO RE-BUCKLE IT AND IT MAY STAY BUCKLED OR IT CAN COME OUT AGAIN. I AM AFRAID IF I WAS TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT THAT THE SEAT BELT WILL BECOME UNBUCKLED AND NOT HOLD ME IN THE SEAT.
My vehicle frame was cracked and very unsafe to drive. My inspection cannot passed until I fixed the crack developed on the frame. Inside the car the weather strip is cracked all side.
THE VEHICLE WAS RAISED TO PERFORM AN OIL CHANGE, AND THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED THE FRAME HAD HOLES IN IT FROM RUST. HE EXPLAINED THAT THE ENTIRE BODY AND SUSPENSION WAS CONNECTED TO THIS, AND IF A COMPONENT CAME LOOSE THE VEHICLE COULD CRASH. TOYOTA WAS NOTIFIED ABOUT THE ISSUE, BUT DID NOT TAKE ACTION.
THE FRAME IS RUSTED SO BAD CHUCKS OF THE FRAME ARE FALLING OUT CAUSING PROBLEMS TO SWAY BAR, THE MOTOR WAS BASICALLY LAYING SIDE WAYS TOWARDS THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT PANEL. I HAVE SEVEN CHILDREN WE DEPENDED ON THIS VEHICLE TO GET US EVERYWHERE WE NEEDED TO BE. NOW ITS SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BC WHEN THE CHUCK OF FRAME FELL OUT IT CAUSED SWAY BAR TO DROP DOWN CAUSING ME TO ALMOST WRECK WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE SUV . I WAS DRIVING DOWN KY 344 VANCEBURH KY, 41179 AT APPROXIMATELY 10:00 A.M TRAVELING TOWARDS ROUTE 57 TOLLESBORO KY 41189
WELL I TOOK THAT TO A SHOP TO GET THE STEREO WORKING WHICH THE OWNER TOLD ME AFTER TWO HOURS IT WON'T BE READY UNTIL TOMORROW SO I LEFT IT THERE WITH THE DEPOSIT WENT BACK THE NEXT DAY AFTER WORK JUST TO PICK IT UP UNTIL I GOT HOME START OBSERVING THAT MY ANTI SECURITY ALARM WASN'T WORKING WELL WHILE OBSERVING I NOTICED THAT THE DOORS WEREN'T THE SAME COLOR AS THE TRUCK THEN I NOTICED MY SUNROOF WAS IN IT THEN STARTED NOTICING THAT THE VIN NUMBER WAS IN PLACES I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE AND NOW I WENT TO THE DMV LOGGED IN CHECK MY VIN NUMBER AND PLATES IT SEES THAT IT'S BEEN PUT UP FOR SALE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING, THE TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT, VSC TRACK AND AN UNKNOWN WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE BRAKES STARTED TO GRIND INDEPENDENTLY WITH AN ABNORMAL SOUND. ADDITIONALLY, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER WITH AN ALARM SOUNDING INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WILL LOSS POWER. THE VEHICLE ALSO JERKED AND PULLED WHILE ACCELERATING. THE CONTACT TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE NORMAL HOWEVER AFTER DRIVING FOR A WHILE THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V176000 (ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL, TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 99,860.
DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN 35 MPH ROAD AND ESC LIGHT STARTS FLASHING, DASH BEEPING, ANTI LOCK BRAKES START SURGING WITHOUT PRESSING PEDAL. CAR SHAKING. COME TO A STOP. AFTER 10 SECONDS, BEEPING STOPS, ESC STOPS FLASHING. TRAC OFF AND VSC LIGHT COME ON AND STAY ON. CAR DRIVES FINE NOW WITH LIGHTS ON. MECHANIC SAID NEED NEW BRAKES AND YAW SENSOR OUT OF CALIBRATION PROBABLY DUE TO BRAKES. REPLACED ALL BRAKES AND ROTORS, RE-CALIBRATED YAW SENSOR FOR $1000. SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN 600 MILES LATER. THIS TIME WHEN IT HAPPENED, MY 18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING. SHE WILL NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANYMORE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I RESEARCHED AND MANY 2002 SEQUOIAS HAVE THIS PROBLEM, SOMETIMES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2003 SEQUOIAS, THEY NEED TO COVER THIS YEAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS SHAKING VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS UNDER THE VIN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 220,000.
GRINDING NOISE, BEEPING, WARNING LIGHTS FLASHING, DIFFICULTY STEERING, DIFFICULTY BRAKING, CLUNKING WHEN BRAKING, VSC AND ABS LIGHTS ON. VERY SCARY. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH. IT ALSO HAPPENED WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING IT. VERY INTERMITTENT. I WAS GOING STRAIGHT, NO TURNING, NO BUMPS IN THE ROAD. SO RANDOM. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE MUCH ON YOUTUBE AND THE INTERNET AND THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SCARY SITUATION. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD AND MUST BE FIXED! I HEARD THEY RECALLED THE 2003'S BUT NOT THE 2002'S BUT THEY HAVE THE SAME PARTS. I WILL SEND PICTURES OF OTHERS WHO HAVE SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. IF YOU GO TO THE WEBSITE I SENT YOU WILL FIND MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING. I AM SENDING ONLY A SAMPLE. PLEASE DO SOMETHING. SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD, WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IS! I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT MUCH SINCE IT HAPPENED. I HAVE BEEN VERY DISTRACTED SINCE MY BOYFRIEND PASSED AWAY. I DID CALL THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AFTER IT FIRST HAPPENED AND ALSO THE NATIONAL NUMBER FOR TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THERE IS NO RECALL. YET! GO TO CARPROBLEMZOO.COM AND INPUT "BRAKE GRINDING NOISE OF TOYOTA SEQUOIA ABS AND VSC. I TRIED TO UPLOAD DOCS BUT THEY WERE THE WRONG FORMAT.
AS I DRIVE DOWN A HIGHWAY, GRAVEL ROAD, DRIVEWAY, STREET, ANYWHERE, GOING SLOW OR THE SPEED LIMIT, ALL OF A SUDDEN MY VSC LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL START FLASHING ACCOMPANIED BY AN ALARM IN THE DASH, CAUSING THE CAR TO MOMENTARILY FEEL ALMOST AS IF ITS HYDROPLANING. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WILL GO BACK TO NORMAL BUT THE LIGHTS WILL STAY ON. SOMETIMES IT DOES IT 2-3 TIMES EACH TIME THE CAR IS TURNED ON. IT HAS ALSO BEEN DOING IT WHEN I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THEN GO TO TAKE OFF AGAIN IT WILL FLASH THE LIGHTS AND MAKE A WEIRD GRINDING NOISE FOR ABOUT 5-10 SECS NOT LETTING THE CAR MOVE AT ALL. THEN IT WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN START MOVING AGAIN. I HAVE 7 KIDS THAT RIDE WITH ME DAILY AND I FIND THIS EXTREMELY SCARY. IT'S BEEN HAPPENING FOR 6/01/2020 TO NOW/PRESENT/DAILY/
VEHICLE BODY (UNDERSIDE) WHICH ONLY HAS 130000 MILES IS TOTALLY RUSTING OUT. CAR HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. TOYOTA REPLACED THE UNDERCARRIAGE IN THE PAST DUE TO RUST ISSUES BUT THEY HAVE RETURNED AND CORROSION IS EXCESSIVE. *TR
I JUST BOUGHT MY JEEP YESTERDAY 2/29/2020 AND I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT AND IT FEELS LIKE IT'S ABOUT FALL APART, SO I CHECKED UNDERNEATH THE CAR AND THE SUB FRAME IS RUSTED SO BAD IT CAN'T EVEN GO ON A MECHANICAL LIFT BECAUSE I TRIED TO GET AN OIL CHANGE AND THEY COULDN'T DO IT AND I CAN'T EVEN GET BRAKES ON IT BECAUSE IT'S TO RUSTED... I HAVE 4 CHILDREN IS THIS IS NOT SAFE I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DECELERATE INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT PARKED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE WITHIN TWO MINUTES, AND CONTINUED DRIVING TO HIS DESTINATION. THE CONTACT STATED HE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 165,000.
WHEN I START THE VEHICLE THE TRAC OFF AND VSC TRAC LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH. AFTER DRIVING A SHORT TIME THE VEHICLE BEEPS AND GOES INTO A SKIP AND BREAKS TO ONE SIDE. IT CORRECTS ITSELF IN A SECOND. SOMETIMES IT BEEPS AND NO SKID. THIS STARTED A YEAR AGO. FREQUENCY WAS A FEW TIMES A YEAR THEN. NOW IT HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. I BELIEVE TOYOTA ADDRESSED THE ISSUE ON 2003'S, BUT NOT 2002'S. MOST OF TIME THE VEHICLE IS ON CITY STREETS WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND IT IS MORE LIKELY TO HAPPEN AFTER DRIVING A FEW MINUTES. IT ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN I AM DRIVING STRAIGHT.
WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION THE VSC TRAC LIGHTS COME ON AND THE BRAKES ACTIVE ON THEIR OWN CAUSING THE CRACKING NOISE AND A ROUGH JERK MOTION TO THE CAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BOTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS EVEN WHEN DRIVING 10 MILES PER HOUR
I FORGOT TO MENTION IN COMPLAINT 11282925 THAT SOME OF THE DOZEN PARTS NEEDED TO FIX THE VSC PROBLEM HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED BY TOYOTA. SO I COULD PAY THE DEALERSHIP THOUSANDS TO REPLACE SOME OF THE POSSIBLE CULPRITS BUT THE REAL PROBLEM COULD BE THE ITEMS THAT TOYOTA DISCONTINUED. TOYOTA CANNOT ISOLATE WHAT THE EXACT PROBLEM IS AND HAS TO REPLACE POSSIBLE CULPRITS TO SEE IT IT FIXES THE PROBLEM. AFTER ALL OF THIS AND A HUGE REPAIR BILL COULD STILL HAVE THE HIGHWAY SAFETY PROBLEM IF THE FAULTY PART(S) ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED. REPLACING ITEMS ONE AT A TIME AND THEN DRIVING IT ON THE HIGHWAY TO SEE IF IT'S SAFE IS NOT A GOOD STRATEGY. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL AND FIX ALL ITEMS AT THE SAME TIME AND ALSO PRODUCE THE PARTS THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED AS A WAY TO POSSIBLY TRY TO COVER UP THEIR NEGLIGENCE.
ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS RECENTLY WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN A STRAIGHT LINE MANNER, THE REAR BRAKES EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT HAVE AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGED CAUSING MY SEQUIOA TO JERK TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEED. MY VEHICLE JERKS VIOLENTLY, A BUZZER SOUNDS, AND THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS ILLUMINATE AND REMAIN ILLUMINATED. IF THOSE LIGHTS ARE ILLUMINATED IT NO LONGER DOES THIS; HOWEVER, IF THE LIGHTS ARE NOT ILLUMINATED IT'S A COIN FLIP WHETHER BEING JERKED TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE ON THE HIGHWAY. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DOESN'T KNOW WHAT PROBLEM IS. APPARENTLY IT COULD BE A DOZEN DIFFERENT THINGS AND THEY HAVE TO START REPLACING EACH ONE AT A TIME TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY. TO REPLACE EVERYTHING IS SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS, PROBABLY MORE THAN THE BOOK VALUE OF THE VEHICLE.
JUST BOUGHT A USED 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND QUICKLY FOUND THAT I CAN NOT PULL OUT INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC WITHOUT PLENTY OF GAP IN SAID TRAFFIC.I HAD UNHOOKED THE BATTERY TO DO SOME WORK ON IT AND NOW IT WILL HESITATE FOR 1.5 TO 3 SECONDS WHEN YOU EASE FROM A STOP.I HAVE SEEN ON OTHER SITES THAT IT IS CALLED THE HESITATION OF DEATH.I NOTICE ON THE DASH THE (CAR WITH THE SLIPPING) LIGHT COMES ON AND THERE ARE SOME RELAY NOISES UNDER THE DASH.I DON'T SEE THE VSC LIGHT COME ON OR THE ABS LIGHT COME ON.I DID CALL MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO EXPLAIN MY EXPERINCE AND THEY CLAIM TO HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE.THEY TOLD ME JUST TO DRIVE IT AND IT SHOULD WITHIN A FEW DAYS IT SHOULD RELEARN ITSELF.I TOLD THEM I JUST DROVE A 650 MILE TRIP WITH IT AND ITS BEEN A WEEK OR TWO SINCE I UNHOOED THE BATTERY WITH NO CHANGE.SHE SIMPLY JUST WISHED ME LUCK AND THAT WAS IT.AS A UPDATE I CHANGED THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS IN WITCH LOWERED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IN THE MASTER CYLNDER WITCH TURNED ON ALL THE VSC WARNING LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHT AND THE HESITATION WENT AWAY AS LONG AS THE LIGHTS WERE ON.UNFORTUNTALY I TURNED IT OFF AND FILLED THE BRAKE FLUID TO MAX LEVEL AND THE HESITATION CAME RIGHT BACK AND THE VSC WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF.NOTHING TO INDICATE OR GIVE A DIRECTION TO A REPAIR.I SEE THE REPORTS ABOUT THE 2003 SEQUIOA HAVING A RECALL BUT NOT THE 2002.IF THEY ARE THE SAME PART NUMBERS I THINK FOR ALL SAFTY FACTORS ON BOTH YEARS THEY SHOUD BE HONERING THE 2002 UNDER A SAFTY RECALL.NOT REALLY SURE WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT.DO I SELL IT,TRADE IT IN, THE DEARSHIP DIDNT OFFER ANY TRUE HELP OR EVEN MENTION THE RECALL ON THE 2003 SEQUIOA. THEY WERE NOT TO FORTH COMING WITH INFO ON THIS PROBLEM THAT SEEMS TO BE WELL KNOWN ON A TOYOTA FORUM PAGE.
DURING DRIVING ON FREEWAY WITH CLEAN DRY ROAD CAR HAS BEEPING ALARM ON, VSC TRACTION LIGHT ON AND SVC LIGHTS LIT UP WHILE THE CAR SHAKES LINE THE BRAKE IS ON BY ITSELF FOR SHORT PERIOD (3 SECONDS). THEN BOTH WARNING LIGHT VSC AND OFF AND VSC TRACK LIGHT IS ON STILL UNTIL THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AN HOUR AFTERWARD. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE THE CAR SLOWLY ON A LOCAL STREET AFTER PICKING UP MY SON AFTER SCHOOL, THE BRAKE STARTED SHAKING THE CAR AND VSC OFF AND VSC TRACK LIGHTS ARE ON AGAIN. I DRIVE THE CAR WITH CAUTION EVERYTIME AFTER THAT BUT THE OCCURANCE DOESN'T HAPPEN EVERY TIME NOR BEING RECREATE. IT HAPPENED EVERY FEW THOUSAND MILES UNEXPECTEDLY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS . I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A FIX BY THE MANUFACTURER AND HAVE THEM PAY FOR IT. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR MANY SAME CARS .
THE FIRST INDICATION THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WAS THE FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2019. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A COUNTY ROAD WHEN THE LIGHTS INDICATOR LIGHTS FOR THE TRAC AND VSC STARTED FLASHING AND BEEPING WHEN I DROVE OVER SOME BUMPS. THE LIGHTS WOULD NOT GO OFF EVEN WHEN PRESSING TRAC OFF. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTED IT AND THE LIGHTS WERE OFF BUT ONLY FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES INTO MY DRIVE. I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THE AGENT SAID HE DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE SYSTEM AND I WOULD HAVE TO BRING IT BACK FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THAT NIGHT I WAS GETTING READY TO GO OVER A RATHER LARGE BRIDGE WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE CAR JERKED TWICE TO THE RIGHT WITH THE SECOND EVENT PULLING ME OFF THE ROAD. IT WAS EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING AND TERRIFIED US ALL. THANK GOD IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE BRIDGE OR UNDER OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES. THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS CAME ON AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TIME AS THEY HAD BEEN OFF. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND ESSENTIALLY THEY SAID THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THANKFULLY I AM A EXPERIENCED DRIVER BUT IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF MY KIDS, I DON'T KNOW IF THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN OF NO HELP. THE CAR IS SITTING IN MY DRIVE. I IMPLORE YOU TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE THIS FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED.
WHEN DRIVING AT 70MPH OR HIGHER A LIGHT COMES ON AT THE DASH BOARD VSC TRAC OFF THE CAR LOSES SPEED AND VEERS RIGHT TO LEFT ALMOST LOOSING CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL A DIAGNOSTIC GAVE ME A CODE C1234 WICH IS RELATED WITH THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM YAW RATE SENSOR / COMPUTER RECALIBRATION. THIS SENSOR IS SUPPOSED TO LAST THE LIFE OF THE CAR.
TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS, CAME ON WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH IN SUNNY WEATHER IN DEERPARK TEXAS. TWO DASH LIGHTS CAME ON CONNECTED TO TRACTION FAILURE? I HAVE NOT EVER SEEN THESE LIGHTS ON BEFORE. I SEE THE 2003 MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR THS PROBLEM. WHAT ABOUT MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA?
AT 247,000 PLUS MILES THE ABS SYSTEM WOULD SUDDENLY ENGAGE GOING AROUND SHARPER CURVES ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65+ MPH. RECENTLY THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGED AT 32 MPH AROUND A SHARPER CURVE ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD. I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER IN AUGUST 2019. AS OF FEBRUARY 2020 IT IS STILL NOT FIXED, DESPITE SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY. BESIDES BEING NERVE WRACKING, IT IS A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY IN SNOW AND ICE, THAT SHOULD QUALIFY FOR A RECALL.
AN INDIVIDUAL IN OKLAHOMA IS TRYING TO SELL THIS VEHICLE WITH A ROLLED BACK ODOMETER. I'M NOT SURE IF THEY ARE KNOWINGLY DOING IT BUT THEY ARE SELLING IT AS HAVING 130000 MILES WHEN THE LAST REPORTED WAS 283000
AFTER DRIVING ROUGHLY 40 MINUTES ON A STRAIGHT DRY HIGHWAY AT A CONSTANT 70 MPH, MY VSC OFF AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS SUDDENLY CAME ON FOR NO REASON, ACCOMPANIED BY A LOUD HIGH-PITCHED ALARM. THE STEERING FELT LIKE IT WAS DRAGGING, WAS GRINDING, AND PULLED TO THE RIGHT. FELT LIKE SOMETHING WAS BREAKING APART. VERY SCARY SINCE I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE WITH NO SHOULDER. I DECREASED MY SPEED TO ABOUT 60 AND MOVED TO THE RIGHT HAND LANE. AFTER SEVERAL SECONDS, THE ALARM AND GRINDING/DRAGGING STOPPED JUST AS MYSTERIOUSLY AS IT STARTED BEFORE I'D EVEN GOTTEN TO AN EXIT. THE LIGHTS STAYED LIT. BEFORE I USED THE VEHICLE AGAIN, I INFLATED THE TIRES FROM 32.5 TO 35 PSIA, JUST IN CASE THAT MIGHT HAVE CONTRIBUTED. THE NEXT DAY, I DROVE ON THE HIGHWAY FOR 40 MINUTES WITH NO PROBLEM, BUT ON THE WAY BACK HOME, THE SAME THING RECURRED AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES, AGAIN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON A STRAIGHT SECTION OF DRY ROAD. THIS TIME THE DRAGGING AND GRINDING WAS WORSE AND THE ALARM LASTED MUCH LONGER. AGAIN, IT MYSTERIOUSLY STOPPED AS I WAS PREPARING TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY. SEARCHING SIMILAR ANECDOTES SEEMS TO IMPLY A KNOWN FAILURE OF THE YAW SENSOR. THAT SENSOR HAS TRIGGERED THE LIGHTS TO COME ON FROM TIME TO TIME EVER SINCE 2002, BUT IT NEVER CAUSED THE LOUD ALARM OR STRUGGLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE BEFORE. THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL ITEM. I THINK I'M GOING TO HAVE TO DISABLE THE VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL FEATURES OF THE VEHICLE BY REMOVING THE FUSE JUST SO I CAN KEEP DRIVING IT.
I DIDN'T REALIZE WHAT THE LIGHTS MEANT BEING ON WHEN I BOUGHT IT UNTIL I WAS ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE 4HRS AWAY AND SUDDENLY THE STEERING STARTED VEERING OFF TO THE OTHER LANE AND SWERVING. I COULD NOT DRIVE PAST 40MPH ON THE INTERSTATE THE REST OF THE WAY AND ALMOST CRASHED INTO OTHER VEHICLES AND OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN YOU SWITCH LANES THE VEHICLE PULLS YOU TOO FAR AND IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS. I HAD TO BREAK THE ABS FUSE TO GET BACK HOME AND EVEN THEN IT STILL VEERS OFF WHEN TRYING TO SWITCH LANES AND I CAN'T GO PAST 60 OR SO. I DON'T SEE HOW THERE ARE THIS MANY COMPLAINTS AND MANY ACCIDENTS AND ALMOST ACCIDENTS TO NOT HAVE EVERYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MALFUNCTION TO BE CONSIDERED NOT DANGEROUS ENOUGH FOR A RECALL. I'M THANKFUL MY KIDS WERE NOT WITH ME DURING THAT TRIP.
SUNROOF GLASS FLEW OFF MY VEHICLE ON HIGHWAY SPEED 65-70 MPH. I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5. I PURCHASED A GLASS AND WHICH WAS MUCH LARGER THAN THE VEHICLE HAD REORDERED ANOTHER GLASS AND RECEIVED THE SAME THING. WHEN DOING A BIT OF RESEARCH FOUND OUT THAT TOYOTA SR5 DON'T COME WITH A SUNROOF (BOUGHT VEHICLE 2011) I WAS UNAWARE SINCE IT WORKED PERFECTLY FINE. WHEN I FOUND THE PRODUCT MANUFACTURER AND SEARCH ONLINE FOUND THAT HOLLANDIA 700 BY WEBASTO COMPANY HAVE A RECALL FOR THAT MODEL. SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS MODIFIED WILL I BE HELPED OR ASSISTED IN ANY WAY? THANK YOU

THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHT COMES ON WHEN DRIVING. THERE IS A SOUND WHEN I HIT A POT HOLE OR HIT THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE IS THEN A LITTLE UNSTABLE.THIS HAPPENS ON THE STREET AND THE INTERSTATE. WHEN I HIT THE BRAKE THERE IS A LOUD SOUND AND THEN THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHT COMES ON.THIS IS SCARY. THIS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS ON AND OFF.THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING WHEN DRIVING SLOW AT 10 MPH OR 60MPH.
