FIRST THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THEN THE VSC OFF LIGHT FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY THE VSC TRAC LIGHT. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT, AS THE LIGHTS ONLY STAY ON FOR A DAY OR TWO THEN DON'T COME BACK ON UNTIL A FEW DAYS LATER. I HAVE CHECKED THE RECALL DATABASE FOR MY VEHICLE AND IT IS NOT INCLUDED, ALTHOUGH THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECALLED ON OTHER VEHICLES MATCHING MY VEHICLE'S GENERAL DESCRIPTION. I LIVE IN A VERY WET AREA OF THE COUNTRY AND RELY ON THIS SYSTEM TO WORK PROPERLY. FROM WHAT I CAN READ THROUGH ONLINE FORUMS, TOYOTA NEEDS TO TAKE A LOOK AT EVERY VEHICLE THAT IS EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE, AS IT APPEARS TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE WIDESPREAD THAN FIRST THOUGHT. *TR
GOING AROUND A TURN IN THE MOUNTAINS AT A SLOW SPEED, MY TRACTION CONTROL KICKS IN AND THERE IS A GRINDING NOISE, I LOOSE THE USE OF THE BRAKES COMPLETELY UNTIL THE TRACTION CONTROL TURNS OFF. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME MY SPRINGS AND SHOCKS WERE BAD. I REPLACED ALL 4 OF THE SPRINGS AND SHOCKS AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SCARY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, A LOUD BANGING NOISE EMITTED FROM THE FRONT END OF VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER CHASSIS WAS RUSTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
THE VSC TRAK LIGHT COMES ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND WILL REMAIN ON UNTIL I TAKE THE VEHICLE IN TO MY MECHANIC. IT WORRIES ME THAT THERE MAY BE SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS OCCURRED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, OVER AN OVER AGAIN. CAN THIS BE FIXED PERMANENTLY? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V312000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER, THE PART NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WE HAD A STEERING LEAK, SO WE BROUGHT OUR VEHICLE FOR REPAIRS. THE MECHANICS DISCOVERED THAT OUR FRAME HAD ADVANCED AND UNSAFE LEVELS OF EROSION AND BREAKDOWN, FAR BEYOND THE AGE AND CONSIDERED CARE OF THE VEHICLE. WE FOUND THERE WAS A FRAME RECALL ON OUR MAKE AND MODEL, BUT TOYOTA IS SAYING IT EXPIRED TWO WEEKS BEFORE (JULY 31ST). WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED ONCE ABOUT THIS OR ANY OTHER RECALL FOR THE SEQUOIA, BUT RECEIVE OTHER NOTICES FOR OUR OTHER TOYOTA REGULARLY. TOYOTA IS DOING NOTHING TO ASSIST IN REPAIR OR TRADE IN (WE PURCHASED AS A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED TOYOTA FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, MCGEE IN HANOVER MA THREE YEARS AGO) AND WE ARE LEFT WITH A FAMILY VEHICLE THAT WE OWE $6K ON, YET HAS NO SALE OR TRADE IN VALUE DUE TO IT'S COMPROMISED STATE, AND ONE WE CAN'T DRIVE OUR CHILDREN IN. WE INVESTED NUMEROUS REPAIRS DUE TO THE VEHICLES AGE RECENTLY ($2K THIS WINTER, ALONG WITH NEW TIRES, ETC), ANTICIPATING THIS, LIKE OTHER TOYOTAS WE HAVE OWNED, WOULD GET US A COUPLE MORE YEARS. AFTER OPENING A CASE WITH TOYOTA AND REACHING OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP, WE ARE LEFT FRUSTRATED AND WITH NO OPTIONS, AND STRESS AND COST ARE ACCUMULATING AS WE DEAL WITH CAR RENTALS, ETC.DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE DON'T HAVE A CAR AND CANNOT AFFORD TOTAL REPLACEMENT AT THIS TIME. WE BOUGHT THIS 2003 SEQUOIA LIMITED 2 WHEEL DRIVE NEW, AND IT HAS BEEN A GOOD CAR OVER ALL. BUT THE VSC TRACS, BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE FLASHED ON AND OFF SPORADICALLY AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS, WHEN DRIVING AND OR WHEN BRAKING. THEY USUALLY DON'T EFFECT THE CAR, BUT RECENTLY WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THEM ALL COMING ON WHEN BRAKING, AND WE SEEM TO LOOSE POWER AND THE POWER STEERING IS LOST MOMENTARILY UNTIL WE COME TO A STOP, AND SHUT IT OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES. THIS HAPPENED MOST RECENTLY LAST WEEK WHEN COMING INTO AN INTERSECTION DRIVING ABOUT 30MPH, AND ALL OF THE VSC, TRAC, AND BRAKE LIGHTS ABRUPTLY CAME ON, THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE, AND IT SEEMED TO HAVE LOST ELECTRICAL POWER, TRYING TO COME TO A STOP, I COULD NOT STOP IN TIME FOR THE INTERSECTION, BUT WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO AVOID BEING HIT BY CROSS TRAFFIC, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE. IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING FELL APART UNDERNEATH. I INSPECTED IT AND SAW NOTHING, BUT KNOW THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD ADDRESS AND PAY FOR BEING A RECALL ITEM. I CALLED THE TOYOTA HOTLINE AND WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER FOR THIS ISSUE, WHICH WAS A RECALL IN 2010. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, AND THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE. STATED IT WAS A BAD COMPUTER, AND SOME VSC MODULE SENSOR? DIDN'T STATE TOYOTA WOULD COVER THE COST OR HELP WITH THE COST. EVEN THOUGH THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN ISSUE WITH TOYOTA SEQUOIA'S FOR YEARS, AND WAS A RECALL ITEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD RESULT IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. WHY WOULD TOYOTA NOT COVER THE COST TO FIX THIS IF IT IS A RECALL ITEM? I WANT IT FIXED BUT WITH THE MILES I HAVE ON IT, DON'T WANT TO SPEND MUCH MONEY ON IT, ESPECIALLY AN ITEM THAT IS A RECALL PROBLEM WITH MANY LIKE MINE. WHAT SHOULD I DO? WAIT TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT, HIRE A LAWYER, AND SUE? FRUSTRATED TOYOTA OWNER IN TEXAS. *TR
THE VSC, AND TRAC, AND BRAKE LIGHTS ALL LIT UP WHILE COMING INTO AN INTERSECTION, WHERE I HEARD A GRINDING CLUNKING NOISE IN THE DRIVE TRAIN, AS I TRIED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, COASTED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, MADE OTHERS BRAKING TO AVOID ME AS I STEERED AWAY FROM THEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY OVER THE YEARS BUT THIS WAS THE SCARIEST, AS IT HAPPENED GOING INTO AN INTERSECTION. IT HAS HAPPENED BACKING OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY SEVERAL TIMES, ON THE HIGHWAY SEVERAL TIMES. TOYOTA DOESN'T WANT TO TIE THIS ISSUE TO THE RECALL REGARDING THE VSC ECU TRAC LIGHT RECALL FROM SEVERAL YEARS AGO. I'VE TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO ESCALATE THIS ISSUE WITH TOYOTA MOTOR CO. *TR
WE WERE NOTIFIED EFFECTIVE JULY 2014 TO NOT HAVE PASSENGERS IN THE FRONT SEAT DUE TO FAULTY AIR BAGS. DUE TO THE SIZE AND MAKEUP OF OUR FAMILY, THIS MAKES OUR VEHICLE UNUSABLE FOR THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH IT WAS PURCHASED. IT HAS BEEN 7 MONTHS SINCE WE FIRST BECAME AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. WE HAVE HAD TO BORROW OR RENT CARS WHILE WE WAIT FOR THIS TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE IS OUR ONLY VEHICLE WITH TOWING CAPACITY. WHEN CAN WE EXPECT REMEDY? I'M SURE THERE ARE FAMILIES IN MORE DIRE STRAITS THAN US. *TR
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA FOR MY '03 SEQUOIA LIMITED AND TOOK IT TO KOLOSSO TOYOTA (APPLETON, WI) FOR FRAME INSPECTION AND APPLICATION OF A MATERIAL THAT PREVENTS CORROSION, DUE TO A RECALL, IN 2014. I CALLED KOLOSSO TO SCHEDULE MY TRUCK TO BE SEEN WELL BEFORE THE DUE DATE OF 7-31-14, IN JUNE 2014. KOLOSSO SAID IT HAD TO ORDER THE SPECIAL "KIT" TO APPLY MATERIAL TO MY FRAME AND SCHEDULED MY INSPECTION AND APPLICATION FOR EARLY AUGUST 2014, AFTER 7-31-14 (DUE DATE). THEY SAID THE KIT WOULDN'T ARRIVE UNTIL AUGUST AND THERE WAS NOTHING ANYONE COULD DO. EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE BECAUSE THE KIT WOULDN'T EVEN BE AVAILABLE UNTIL AUGUST 2014. I RECEIVED A FRANTIC CALL FROM KOLOSSO ON 7-13-14 WHILE I WAS WORKING LITERALLY 2 HOURS AWAY IN MILWAUKEE, WI THAT MY TRUCK HAD TO BE INSPECTED IN APPLETON THAT DAY IN ORDER FOR THE RECALL TO BE VALID. KOLOSSO SAID IT WAS THEIR FAULT FOR SCHEDULING ME IN AUGUST 2014 BUT TOYOTA SUDDENLY DEEMED 7-31-14 THE ABSOLUTE DEADLINE FOR THE RECALL. SO I HAD TO LEAVE WORK UNEXPECTEDLY TO DRIVE 2 HOURS AWAY FOR INSPECTION. AN EXTREME INCONVENIENCE! THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT COMPENSATE ME IN ANY WAY FOR MY UPSET. THEY PLACED ALL BLAME SQUARELY ON TOYOTA. I SAID, AS A CUSTOMER, I HAD DONE EVERYTHING THE DEALERSHIP SAID AND I HAD DONE NOTHING WRONG. THIS ARGUMENT WAS BETWEEN KOLOSSO AND TOYOTA BUT I WAS PENALIZED. AS OF THIS DATE, 2 YEARS LATER, KOLOSSO HAS STILL NOT APPLIED THE SPECIAL COATING TO MY FRAME TO PREVENT CORROSION. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A CALL FROM THEM TO SCHEDULE THIS.I FEEL THIS IS ILLEGAL. I COMPLIED FULLY WITH THE RECALL BY THE DEADLINE. I HAVE RECEIVED NO INDEMNIFICATION IN ANY CAPACITY. AND SINCE THAT TIME, I'VE GOTTEN RECALL NOTICES FOR OTHER THINGS BUT IF KOLOSSO WON'T HELP ME, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? THEY'RE A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I AM A COMPLETELY DISGUSTED TOYOTA VICTIM WITH A BODY FRAME THAT IS LIKELY CORRODED.
2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LIMITED FRAME RECALL ISSUES. BOUGHT NEW FROM DEL TOYOTA IN PENNSYLVANIA (DEALER # 9001) HAVE HAD SEVERAL UNRELATED/POSSIBLE RELATED RECALLS SINCE PURCHASE. JULY: RECEIVED MAILING FROM TOYOTA IN REFERENCE TO POSSIBLE FRAME RECALL. SET UP DEALERSHIP APPT. 7/24/14: DROPPED OFF CAR @ DEALERSHIP FOR RECALL REVIEW, PROVIDED WITH RENTAL FOR 2 DAYS, AFTER THEY FORGOT ABOUT US IN THE WAITING AREA. IN 24H DEALERSHIP NOTIFIED US: NO RUST & WILL APPLY RUST PROTECTANT COATING. 24H LATER: NOTIFIED BY DEALERSHIP: FOUND A HOLE ON CROSS MEMBER THAT HOLDS THE TRANS ON LEFT SIDE. SPOKE WITH HEAD OF MAINTENANCE REGARDING ISSUE & RESOLUTION. OUTCOME: FRAME REPLACED @ NO COST BUT, IF CERTAIN PARTS ARE BROKEN DURNING THE REMOVALS OR INSTALLATION THE COST IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY. THE FRAME WILL TAKE 1-2 MONTH TO ORDER. TOLD THAT THEY WILL NOT OFFER A RENTAL DURING THAT TIME & THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE "I WOULDN'T LET YOU LEAVE IF IT WASN'T SAFE." INITIATED A TOYOTA CLAIM NUMBER, SHOULD BE CONTACTED BY CASE MANAGER WITHIN 24 BUSINESS HOURS. NO CONTACT YET. UPON RESEARCHING LIKE ISSUES WITH THE SAME MAKE/MODEL/YEAR. A LARGE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE ARE HANDED A VERY LARGE BILL AFTER THE FRAME INSTALLATION & ARE CONTINUING TO HAVE ISSUES STEMMING FROM THE FRAME REPLACEMENT. THE COSTS ARE NOT BEING COVERED BY TOYOTA. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY VEHICLE IN FEAR THAT I WILL CRASH/BE INJURED OR CAUSE SOMEONE ELSE TO CRASH/BE INJURED. VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT TOYOTA IS NOT STANDING BEHIND THEIR RECALL/SERVICE. *JS
THE VSC OFF/ TRAC OFF AND CHECK ENGINE AND BRAKE LIGHT ALL CAME ON. THE BRAKE STARTED TO JUMP AND THE CAR PULLED HARE TO THE LEFT. I TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON THE PROBLEM WENT A WAY BUT THE LIGHTS ALL CAME BACK ON. HOWEVER THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR SEQUOIA AND I HAVE SEEN NO SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL, TRACTION CONTROL, AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS SUDDENLY REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
THE VSC CONTROL SYSTEM HAS NEVER WORKED CORRECTLY...ITS BEEN NOTHING BUT A PROBLEM FROM THE TIME WE BOUGHT IT
PARKING BRAKE DISINTEGRATED INTO A PILE OF PARTS. I HAD HAD THE BRAKE REPLACED TWICE, AND WAS DETERMINED TO FIND OUT HOW THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED WHEN I DRIVE AND BRAKE NORMALLY. I HAD 6 MECHANICS LOOK AT IT EXTENSIVELY UNTIL THE LAST ONE FIGURED IT OUT. WHAT WE DETERMINED: 2003 SEQUOIA'S BRAKE DESIGN SWIVELS THE GRIPPING "WINGS" (C-SHAPED) FROM ONE SINGLE PIN (OR POINT) TO GRIP THE CENTER TO HOLD THE CAR IN PLACE. THIS DESIGN ALLOWS THESE TWO "WINGS" TO CATCH ON EACH OTHER. SINCE THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE AND GO IN REVERSE, I AM FORCED TO GO "FORWARD", TO UNHITCH THESE TWO PIECES, IN ORDER TO BACK UP. (NEWER DESIGNS USE TWO PINS FOR THE TWO BRAKE "WINGS", SO THEY DO NOT CATCH ON EACH OTHER.) I HAVE LEARNED THE ONLY WAY AROUND THIS WAS TO ALWAYS PARK IN A PLACE THAT I CAN PULL FORWARD. SINCE THAT IS NOT USUALLY POSSIBLE, I AM NOT ABLE TO SET THE PARKING BRAKE MOST TIMES. I END UP RELYING ON MY ENGINE TO HOLD THE CAR IN GEAR TO KEEP IT FROM ROLLING...NOT A SAFE WAY TO PARK! I DO BELIEVE THERE WAS A RECALL ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS, BUT THEY MISSED MY 2003 MODEL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE MY ENGINE MAY NOT STAY IN GEAR ONE OF THESE MOMENTS. CAN ANYONE HELP?
TL* TAKATA RECALL. THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V285000 (AIR BAGS). THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
AT RANDOM TIMES, THE VSC AND BRAKE LIGHTS WILL COME ON. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. THEY SEVERELY GRIND AND STOPPING IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO COMPLETELY TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART. I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO TOYOTA MANY TIME OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL YEARS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS I HAVE CHILDREN RIDING IN THE VEHICLE!! TOYOTA EITHER SAID THERE IS NOTHING WRONG OR THAT A SENSOR WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED WHICH COSTS APPROXIMATELY $1600.00. THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH OLDER SEQUOIAS AND SHOULD BE A RECALL. IT SHOULD BE FREE OF CHARGE TO THE OWNER! I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING TOYOTA DID NOT DO RIGHT! *TR

THE HANDLE THAT OPERATED THE HATCH IS VERY FRAGILE AND BREAKS FREQUENTLY. THIS PLASTIC HANDLE BREAKS ON A 1-2 YEAR BASIS AND THE REPAIR COST IS OVER 400 DOLLARS TO REPLACE THE HANDLE. OPENING THE HATCH IS NOT POSSIBLE WHEN THIS BREAKAGE OCCURS AND ANYTHING THAT WAS PLACED IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WILL BE DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO RETRIEVE. ALSO, WHEN THE HATCH IS CLOSED AND THE LATCH IS BROKEN, NONE OF THESE VEHICLES CAN GAIN ACCESS TO THEIR SPARE TIRE WHICH IS LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE AND IS REMOVED USING A TOOL THAT IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE WHEN THE HATCH IS OPEN. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA FOR UNDERCARRIAGE RUSTING. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR TREATMENT. THEY KEPT THE VEHICLE OVERNIGHT AND I PICKED IT UP THE NEXT DAY. SIX MONTHS LATER (I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHEN IT HAPPENED BECAUSE WE HAVE MORE THAN ONE VEHICLE), WHILE DRIVING THE SEQUOIA, WHICH I NEVER HAD PROBLEMS WITH BEFORE, I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING AS I DROVE THE VEHICLE AND THOUGHT THAT WITH THE NEW TREATMENT IT WAS JUST BURNING OFF THE EXCESS. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE, I LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE ROTORS HAD RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT I COULD RUB MY HAND ON THEM AND RUB THE METAL OFF. I PICKED UP VEHICLE AND THIS CORROSIVE CHEMICAL IS DRIPPING OF THE VEHICLE AND IS NOT DRYING. CONCERNED FOR ENVIRONMENT AND ALSO, I HAVE NO IDEA OF HOW VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED ASSURING THAT THE FRAME IS SAFE.

I DISCOVERED VERY QUICKLY THAT THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEIR VSC / ENGINE / AND BRAKE LIGHTS BECOMING ACTIVATED.
