TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. IN 2011, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LIFTGATE LATCH FRACTURED. THE LATCH WAS REPLACED BY CULVER CITY TOYOTA (9077 WASHINGTON BLVD, CULVER CITY, CA 90232); HOWEVER, THE LATCH FRACTURED AGAIN AND THE TAIL LIGHT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ORDER FOR THE DEALER TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE, THEY HAD TO OPEN THE LIFTGATE, BUT WERE UNABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 227,557.
THE STEERING COLUMN JACKET AND CONTROLLER CRACKED FROM NORMAL WEAR. THESE 2 PARTS HOLD THE GEAR SHIFT AND GUIDE THE VEHICLE IN PARK,REVERSE AND DRIVE. WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN THE PARK POSITION BUT DUE TO THE CRACKED PARTS THE VEHICLE WAS ACTUALLY IN REVERSE WITH OUT MY KNOWLEDGE. THE VEHICLE COULD BE TURNED OFF ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO MOVE FREELY. THE STEERING COLUMN COVER WAS REMOVED AND REVEALED WERE NON-SUPPORTIVE PARTS THAT WERE NEEDED FOR THE RANGE OF MOTION AND FORCE FOR THE GEAR SHIFT OVER TIME AND POSSIBLE INADEQUATE DIE CAST METAL.
2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. CONSUMER STATES THAT TOYOTA HAS INHERENT BRAKING SYSTEM DEFECTS AND POSSIBLE DEFECT IN THE DRIVE SHAFT *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AT 16,117 THE DEALER FOUND THE FRONT ROTORS WERE RUSTED AND THE BRAKE PADS WERE WORN DOWN REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND RESURFACING THE FRONT ROTORS. AT 20, 230 MILES, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER FOUND CODE C1247; SKID CONTROL ECU HAD AN INTERNAL FAILURE. AT 35,999 THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE DEALER FOUND CODES C1247 AD C1223; ABS CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION AND INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. THE DEALER ALSO FOUND THE DRIVE SHAFT YOKE NEEDED MODIFICATION. ADDITIONALLY, THE FRONT SEAT BELTS TIGHTENED TO THE POINT WHERE THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO MOVE FORWARD TO LOOK OUT THE SIDE VIEW MIRROR. *JB
WE HAD TIRES CHANGED, THEN THE SKID LIGHT CAME ON WE LOST POWER ON THE FREEWAY THE CAR FISH TAILED MY HUSBAND CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER THINKING THAT THERE WAS NO WAY CHANGING TIRES COULD MAKE OUR 2004 SEQUOIA LOSE POWER, THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS I AM FRIGHTENED TO DRIVE MY CAR THE LIGHT COMES ON I LOSE POWER AT 70MPH THIS COULD CREATE SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I HAVE READ LOTS OF OTHERS EXPERIENCING SAME PROBLEM THESE SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IS EXPERIENCING VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL ISSUES THAT I BELIEVE POSE A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO MY FAMILIES SAFETY. UNDER ACCELERATION, THE VEHICLE THINKS IT'S LOSING TRACTION AND ENGAGES THE TRACTION CONTROL BY REDUCING POWER. ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WHILE ACCELERATING INTO TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE BOGS DOWN. THIS IS HAZARDOUS FOR US, AND FOR OTHER DRIVERS. THIS WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE 2003 MODEL OF THE SEQUOIA AND TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL. I'VE CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY CLAIM THE RECALL DOESN'T APPLY TO THE 2004 MODEL EVEN THOUGH IT'S EXPERIENCING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. *TR
ON MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THE VSC TRAC LIGHT AND TRAC OFF LIGHT ARE BOTH ON. THEY WILL NOT GO OFF. SO I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS WORKING. I READ ON MANY FORUMS AND I AM NOT THE ONLY EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEMS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA NEEDS TO CORRECT IT. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING VEHICLE AND SHE HAD NOTICED A BANG OR THUMP COMING FROM THE CAR. SHE HAD NOTICED PRIOR THAT THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT HAD COME SPORADICALLY. THE TRAC, VSC, AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON AND HAVE STAYED ON SINCE. THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS HAVE BEEN TURNED TWICE SINCE THEN BECAUSE FOR WHATEVER REASON THE ROTORS ARE WARPING. THE FRONT BRAKES GRIND NOW AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT, IS TO TURN THE ROTORS. CHECKED INTO THE REPAIR, BUT UNABLE TO AFFORD $2,000 TO FIX A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE LOVE THE VEHICLE BUT HATE THE PROBLEM THAT WE ARE HAVING AND DISAPPOINTED WITH TOYOTA. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HORN WOULD ONLY OPERATE INTERMITTENTLY WHEN ENGAGED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE CONTACT PAD BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 160,000. UPDATED 09/21/11 *BF UPDATED 09/28/11
WHILE DRIVING THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I TRIED TO MAKE A TURN AFTER THE STOP SIGN I REALIZED THE SKID LIGHT WAS ON FOR FEW SECONDS AND I FELT IF I LOST THE VEHICLE CONTROL.
PROBLEM WITH ECU UNIT, VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHT COMING ON IN VEHICLE. THE BRAKES WERE RECENTLY CHANGED AND IT IS NOW MAKING A SCREECHING NOISE. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. WHEN I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE AND TOOK IT TO TOYOTA FOR SOME OTHER RECALL THEY TOLD ME THAT MY ECU UNIT NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. THE ECU UNIT IS NOW ON RECALL BUT THEY ARE RESTRICTING IT TO ONLY 2003 MODEL. I HAVE A 2004 & IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM THE 2003 HAS. I FEEL SORRY FOR ALL THE MONEY THEY HAD TO PAY OUT WITH OTHER DEFECTS BUT I FEEL IF THERE IS A PROBLEM THEN THEY SHOULD OWN UP TO IT AND FIX IT. MY VEHICLE IS ALSO LOSING POWER ON TURNS AND I THINK IT IS FROM THIS SAME ISSUE BASED ON THE FORUMS I HAVE READ. THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN MAKING TURNS IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT HAD THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED LAST WEEK AT MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. NOW THE ENGINE LIGHT IS STAYING ON AS WELL AS THE VHS TRAC AND TRAC OFF INDICATOR LIGHTS. THE CAR JERKS WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN INTERMITTENT FOR TWO MONTHS BUT IS NOW ALL THE TIME. *TR

THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY .THE VEHICLE WILL ALSO DRAMATICALLY DE-ACCELERATE. THERE IS ALSO A SMELL LIKE SMOKE. AFTER SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF AND LATER RESTARTING ALL WAS OK. TOYOTA IS VERY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. SUCH A PROBLEM OCCURRING ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE LEADING TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WITH POTENTIAL FOR NUMEROUS FATALITIES. TOYOTA HAD A RECALL FOR EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM ON IT"S 2003 MODEL, BUT NOTHING FOR THE 2004. CONSIDERING THEIR MOST RECENT PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION I CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE EXPECTED BY NOW THAT THE NHTSA WOULD HAVE INVESTIGATED AND MANDATED THAT TOYOTA CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT...NOT AFTER THE FACT. AGAIN, THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED FACT ON TOYOTAS OWN WEBSITE. NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED TO NO AVAIL. THEIR REFUSAL TO RECALL AND RECTIFY THE SITUATION SHOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL TO THE NHTSA. IF I HEAR NOTHING MORE ON THIS MATTER, I WILL ASSUME NEITHER TOYOTA NOR THE NHTSA IS CONCERNED ABOUT THIS POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS DEFECT. *TR
DUNLOP AT20 GRANDTREK P265/65R17 TIRE BLOW OUT. THIS NEW TIRE WITH ONLY 18K MILES ON IT COMPLETELY FELL APART WHILE DRIVING ON I-4 TRAVELING AT 50 MPH THROUGH THE CITY OF ORLANDO. I WISH I COULD UPLOAD A PICTURE, BUT THE END RESULT IS THAT THE TIRE SEPARATED FROM THE RIM IN A SHREDDED CIRCULAR PATTERN. ODD AND VERY FRIGHTENING. THE TIRE WAS MANUFACTURED IN 09. THE OTHER NEW TIRES ON THE CAR SEEM FINE. *TR
2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. NO CRASH YET. INCIDENT IS ALL 3 BRAKE LIGHTS IN THE DASH ON(BRAKE,VSC,TRAC OFF). AFRAID OF BRAKES FAILING. RESEARCH SHOWED TOYOTA NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE AND MAKING CONSUMER PAY OUT OF POCKET UP TO 2000$ FOR SOFTWARE REPAIR TO THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER. THE VSC WARNING LIGHT AND SOMETIMES BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WILL COME ONE IN 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THERE APPEARS TO BE NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE BUT IT LOOSES POWER WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND HESITATES WHEN YOU ARE MAKING A TURN. TOYOTA HAS COME OUT WITH A RECALL FOR SEQUOIA 2003 AND HAVE A TECHNICAL BULLETIN DISCUSSING 2003 - 2005, HOWEVER TOYOTA REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING SINCE MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE CURRENT RECALL. *TR
VSC CONTROL LIGHT IS ON AND VEHICLE HAS LESS TRACTION CONTROL, CAUSING ME TO DRIVE IT SLOW AND VERY CAREFUL TO AVOID LOSS OF CONTROL. THE SEQUOIA MODEL ONE YEAR PREVIOUS HAD AN ISSUE, I BELIEVE THE 2004 MODEL DOES AS WELL. ALSO BRAKE REPLACEMENT OCCURS TO FREQUENTLY. I REPLACE MY BRAKES MAKE REPAIRS 2-3 YR. THE SAME OCCURED WITH MY TOYOTA FORERUNNER. TOYOTA NEEDS TO BEEF UP THEIR BRAKING SYSTEMS. IT IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND YEARS. *TR
2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE REAR DOOR (HATCH) EXTERNAL DOOR HANDLE FAILS MID WAY DURING NORMAL OPERATION LEADING THE DOOR TO CONTINUOUSLY BE AJAR DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. DOOR HANDLE IS DISABLED AND THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO OPEN/CLOSE DOOR (THERE IS NO INTERNAL HANDLE). TOTAL FAILURE. LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATED THAT THIS PART FAILS OFTEN ON TOYOTA SEQUOIAS AND TOYOTA SIENNAS. SEARCH OF INTERNET WEBSITE REVEALS FAILURE IS DUE TO USE OF "CHEAP PLASTIC PARTS" ON THIS ESSENTIAL PIECE OF VEHICLE EQUIPMENT. *TR

NOTICED TRAC DEFECT LIGHT ON,VSC LIGHT ON,ENGINE LIGHT ON. THE TOYOTA SERVICE PEOPLE STATED IT NEEDED A VSC CONTROL ECM THAT WILL COST OVER $1600 AND SO WE ARE WAITING TO HEAR IF THERE WILL BE A RECALL AS THERE ARE MANY,MAY COMPLAINTS LISTED WITH YOU AND ON OTHER WEBSITES. *TR
SPORADICALLY, ON DOWNHILL WITH SPEED WHEN APPLYING BRAKES A CRUNCHING SOUND MADE, AUDIBLE WARNING SOUND AND WARNING LIGHT APPEAR. RELEASE AND REAPPLYING BRAKES RESET WARNINGS LIGHTS AND SOUND. LAST WEEK, ON A FLAT SURFACE THE SAME SOUND WAS MADE, THE WARNING LIGHT SOUNDED AND LIGHTS (VSC TRAC AND BRAKE) APPEARED. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AS NOTED IN OWNERS MANUAL. THE SKID CONTROL ECU IS DIAGNOSED AS NEEDING REPLACED. DEALER REPLACED COMPUTER MODULE AND I WILL SEE IF THIS CORRECT PROBLEM. CONCERNED AS THE VEHICLE PULLS A TRAILER AND THE BRAKE PROBLEM DESCRIBED HAS HAPPENED WHILE TOWING. *TR
ON FRIDAY, JULY 30, 2010, MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 SUDDENLY DISENGAGED IN THE MIDDLE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC WITH LOSS OF POWER; DASHBOARD LIGHTS VSC, BRAKE, AND TRAC LIGHTS, ILLUMINATING, LOUD METAL SKIDDING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH, AND SUBTLE BURNING SMELL ALL HAPPENING SIMULTANEOUSLY AS IT CRUISED IN FATIGUE-MODE THE REST OF THE WAY. SCARED THE LIFE OUT OF ME AS ALL I COULD DO WAS PRAY THAT A TRACTOR TRAILER WAS NOT BEHIND ME IN FULL SPEED AS THEY SO OFTEN DO ON MAJOR ROADWAYS. AS THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO GLIDE AND DRIVERS HONKING FOR ME TO CLEAR THE WAY, I PROCEEDED TO NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I REACHED CLOSEST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT. FOR THEM TO EXAMINE ROOT CAUSE OF ISSUE. RATHER THAN THEM EXPLAINING TO ME WHY ISSUE OCCURRED, THEY QUICKLY CONCLUDED NEED FOR ABS SKID CONTROL COMPUTER, PART# 89541-0C062, WITH DIAGNOSTIC TEST RESULTS DTC1223 ABS CONTROL, C1247 STROKE SENSOR, AND C1310 ACTIVE BOOSTER SOLENOID AND WANTED TO CHARGE $$$$ NUMBER OF THOUSAND DOLLARS. I CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE NOT SATISFIED WITH RESULTS AND CORP SUGGESTED I GET DATA FROM DEALERSHIP'S DIAGNOSTIC FOR FURTHER ANALYSIS BY MY SELLING/HOME DEALERSHIP. I ASKED SERVICING DEALERSHIP FOR DATA AND THEY ADMITTED THEY HAD ERASED IT AND IT WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE; AND SAID THEY CANNOT LOOK INTO BLACK-BOX UNLESS MANDATED BY LAW OR BY CORPORATE TECH SUPPORT. I THEN WROTE TOYOTA PRESIDENT MR. STEVE ST. ANGELO AND HE FORWARDED IT TO EXEC. CUSTOMER RELATIONS. CUSTOMER REL VOWED TO PAY REPAIRS ON REIMBURSEMENT TERMS IF I FIND TOYOTA DEALER WHO IS WILLING TO REPAIR THE TRUCK. I CALLED SERVICING DEALER AND THEY REFUSE TO FIX WITHOUT SAME-DAY PAYMENT BY TOYOTA CORPORATE. I ASKED MY SELLING/ DEALERSHIP WHO AT FIRST AGREED TO REPAIR THE TRUCK THEN RENGAGED STATING THAT SINCE FORMER DEALERSHIP "ERASED THE CODE" THEY HAVE NO WAY OF CONFIRMING ISSUE AND IF CHANGED ABS BOX AND TRUCK'S FURTHER ISSUES LATER, THEY WOULD BE HELD LIABLE. IN MEANTIME, I AM URGENT NEED OF MY TRUCK; PLEASE HELP. *TR
THE TRAC CONTROL OFF AND VSC LIGHT ALONG WITH BRAKE LIGHT COME AND WE LOSE ACCELERATION AND POWER STEERING. THE CAR ALMOST COMES TO A STOP. ALSO THERE IS A CRUNCHING NOISE COMING FROM THE BRAKES. WE KEEP TAKING IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY KEEP REPLACING PARTS. ALREADY REPLACED THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER. IT DID NOTHING STILL HAVE PROBLEMS. THEY ARE REPLACING THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY TOMORROW. IT COST ME 2,000 AND THEY STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE REVERSING FROM A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE ABRUPTLY STOPPED AS IF THE BRAKES HAD INDEPENDENTLY ENGAGED. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER COULD POSSIBLY HAVE MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STOP. A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS NOT PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE VEHICLE SKID CONTROL WOULD ENGAGE WHILE IN TRAFFIC AND COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A CRASH. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000 AND THE CURRENT WAS UNKNOWN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT 5 MPH AND APPLYING THE BRAKES. THE INTERLOCK BRAKE SYSTEM THEN INDEPENDENTLY ENGAGED, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE SKID, ABS AND VSC WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BRAKE BOOSTER, MASTER CYLINDER, AND THE ABS COMPUTER SKID CONTROL AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE ,YET ADVISED IF THE COMPONENTS WERE EVER UNDER RECALL, HE WOULD POSSIBLY BE REIMBURSED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,996 AND THE CURRENT WAS UNKNOWN.
THE TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC AND ABS LIGHTS ON MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA CAME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY AND REMAINS ON. ON ONE OCCASION, MY VEHICLE LOST POWER WHILE I WAS DRIVING WHEN THE SYSTEM ENGAGED. I REPORTED THIS DIRECTLY TO TOYOTA SINCE THIS IS HAZARDOUS AND IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT OCCURRED WITH MANY OF THE 2003 SEQUOIAS WHICH RESULTED IN A RECALL BEING ISSUED. MY VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE TOYOTA PERSONNEL THAT I SPOKE WITH SAW THIS AS MY ISSUE AND NOT ONE OF TOYOTA AND ISSUED ME A REFERENCE NUMBER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WOULD BE MY RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT WITH ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS FILED REGARDING THIS ISSUE THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND DO SOMETHING. IT SEEM AS IF A DEATH OR INJURY IS NECESSARY TO MAKE THEM STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR MANUFACTURING DEFAULTS. *TR

THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT BEGIN TO ACCELERATE AGAIN UNTIL THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN TO A LOWER UNKNOWN SPEED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY AND WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE WITHIN THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS THE VEHICLE STABILIZATION CONTROL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE ECU REPLACED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 70,000.

THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 80,000.

THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO ALSO STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR WARRANTIES AND THAT HE HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 53,000.

2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA -- KNOWN FOR GAS GAUGE PROBLEMS. THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES IF STOPPED ON AN OPEN ROAD OR ON HIGHWAYS FOR FAULTY METER. CAN NOT RELIABLY TELL IF THE GAS IS FULL OR EMPTY. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED. IT'S A REAL SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

BRAKE LIGHT HAD BEEN COMING ON WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND WHILE DRIVING FOR AT LEAST THE LAST 6 MONTHS. THIS LAST WEEK THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALONG WITH VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAD THE DEALERSHIP CHECK THE SUV AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS FAILURE IN THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALSO TOLD THE DEALERSHIP THAT 4 WHEEL DRIVE WAS HARD TO ENGAGE, BUT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *TR
OUR 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA FREQUENTLY LOSES POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF BETWEEN 60 AND 70 MPH BECAUSE THE VSC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM UNNECESSARILY ENGAGES. THIS OCCURS IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS, INCLUDING WHEN IT IS SUNNY OUT AND THE ROAD IS COMPLETELY DRY AND SMOOTH. WE HAVE NOTICED THAT THIS USUALLY HAPPENS AFTER A FULL FILL-UP OF GASOLINE. WHEN THE VSC ENGAGES, THE DASH INDICATOR LIGHT FLASHES EACH TIME WE TRY TO REAPPLY THE ACCELERATOR. WE EITHER HAVE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AND RECRANK THE CAR TO GET THE VSC TO STOP ENGAGING, OR SIMPLY COAST TO 20 OR 30 MPH -- AGAIN, ON THE HIGHWAY IN TRAFFIC -- AND SLOWLY REAPPLY THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN BEFORE THE VSC STOPS ENGAGING ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO REGAIN SPEED. WHEN LOSING POWER AND THEREFORE SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY, WE'VE HAD CARS NEARLY REAR-END US. WE CALLED TOYOTA AFTER WE LEARNED THAT THEY ANNOUNCED A VOLUNTARY RECALL OF '03 SEQUOIAS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, AND WERE TOLD THAT WE'D HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR OURSELVES. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IS NOT THE RESULT OF ANYTHING WE DID TO THIS VEHICLE. *TR
BATTERY IN 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WENT DEAD. PUT THE BATTERY ON CHARGE. AFTER CHARGING WAS COMPLETE I PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION TO START THE CAR. I STARTED THE CAR AND SMOKE POURED OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND OPENED THE HOOD TO FIND THE ABS COMPUTER SMOKING WITH FLAMES. I QUICKLY PUT OUT THE FLAME WITH A THICK BLANKET AND NOTICED SMOKE SHOOTING THROUGH A HOLE BURNED IN THE COMPUTER. MY 2004 SEQUOIA FAILS TO ACCELERATE FROM A START WHEN ENTERING A TURN AT THE SAME TIME, THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS FLASH ON THE DASHBOARD. IT TYPICALLY DOES THIS WHILE TURNING, MAKING A LEFT OR RIGHT HAND TURN FROM A STOPPED POSITION. MY CAR IS DUE AN OIL CHANGE AND I AM PLANNING ON TAKING IT TO THE DEALER THIS WEEKEND AND I INTEND TO TELL THEM OF THIS ISSUE. I SEE TOYOTA HAS A RECALL FOR 2003 MODELS. MY WIFE WAS EXITING THE HIGHWAY IN OUR 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WHEN SHE HEARD BEEPING COMING FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND NOTICED THE VSC/STABILITY LIGHT ON. SHE APPLIED THE VEHICLE BRAKES ON THE EXIT RAMP AND HEARD A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE WEATHER CONDITIONS AT THE TIME OF THIS EVENT WERE DRY AND SUNNY. SHE WAS FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM OTHER VEHICLES THAT IT IS UNDETERMINED IF ANY INCREASED BRAKING DISTANCE HAPPENED AS A RESULT OF THIS. RIGHT AFTER THE BRAKING/GRINDING, THE VSC LIGHT WENT OUT AND NORMAL OPERATION RESUMED.

THE CONTACT STATED THERE WERE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE REGARDING THE VEHICLE SKID CONTROL UNIT AND BELIEVED THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THE FAILURE TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
I HAVE A 2004 SEQUOIA AND I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE VSC, TRAC, ABS, AND BRAKE LIGHTS RANDOMLY COMING ON FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. I ONLY HAVE 105,000 MILES. THE BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF REGULARLY (MOSTLY ON MORE THAN OFF). HOWEVER WITH THE OTHER LIGHTS IT IS VERY RANDOM. UPON BRAKING, I WILL EXPERIENCE A LOUD GRINDING SOUND, THE CAR JERKS/WHIPLASH MOTION, THE CAR IS HARD TO STOP AND MANAGE AND THEN ALL THE LIGHTS COME ON AFTER THIS OCCURS. IT ALL HAPPENS WITHIN 3-5 SECONDS TOTAL BUT THE LIGHTS STAY ON UNTIL THE CAR IS TURNED OFF. IT MAY DO IT 2-3 MORE TIMES OR MIGHT NOT DO IT AGAIN FOR A WEEK OR EVEN AS LONG AS A MONTH. I SIMPLY WAS COASTING FROM A FAST FOOD SPEAKER TO THE WINDOW TO PAY AND I EXPERIENCED IT AND IT ALMOST PUSHED ME INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IT HAS DONE IT WHEN BREAKING COMING UP TO A RED OR YELLOW LIGHT. I LET OFF THE BRAKE WHEN IT DOES IT AND PRESS AGAIN AND IT MAY DO IT 2-3 TIMES UNTIL I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP OR MIGHT NOT DO IT AGAIN ONCE I RELEASE THE BRAKE THE FIRST TIME. IT IS DIFFICULT TO DETECT BECAUSE IT OCCURS AT DIFFERENT TIMES, DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT BRAKING SPEEDS AND MIGHT NOT DO IT AGAIN FOR A WHILE. FOR 3 YEARS I HAVE PUT UP WITH THIS. I GO TO THE DEALER AND NOTHING CAN BE PROVEN UNLESS LIGHTS ON AT THAT TIME. WHEN I WENT TO THE FIRST PLACE I COULD GET TO BEFORE THEY WENT OFF THEY HOOKED IT UP TO A MACHINE AND 6 POSSIBLE PROBLEMS CAME UP. I HAVE READ THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR 2003-2004 MODELS AND YOU FIX ONE THING AND THATS NOT THE ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS A COMPUTER/BRAKE COMMUNICATION FLAW. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WITH THE COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM FROM INDIVIDUALS EVEN ON THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION BOARD PAGE THAT THIS IS NOT CONSIDERED A RECALL. THE REAR DOOR LATCH FAILED, MAKING THE DOOR INOPERABLE. USE OF THE DOOR FOR ENTRY AND EXIT WAS IMPOSSIBLE, CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD. REPAIR OF THIS LATCH FAILURE IS EXPENSIVE ($400 - $700) AND INCONVENIENT. THE DESIGN OF THE PART AND THE MATERIAL USED (PLASTIC) APPEARS TO BE AT FAULT. A HEAVIER DUTY METAL PART IS NOW AVAILABLE FROM AFTER MARKET PARTS DEALERS. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE COMMON AND WIDESPREAD JUDGING FROM A DISCUSSION WITH A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER AND JUDGING FROM THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AND INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. *JS
I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LTD 2WD. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN APRIL 2009. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE MY EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT WOULD SPORADICALLY COME ON WHILE DRIVING WITH NO OTHER EFFECTS. SEVERAL LIGHTS TURNED ON IN JANUARY 2010 WHICH INCLUDED THE VSC, TRACTION CONTROL OFF, AND CHECK ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AND I WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT TO TOYOTA. THEY ALSO PRINTED OUT A SAFETY BULLETIN THAT INCLUDED MY VEHICLE WITH EXACT PROBLEMS ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER YEARS OF THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA . I HAD THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED BY TOYOTA AND THEY STATED I NEEDED A NEW SKID CONTROL COMPUTER, WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE($1100-$1300). HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD THAT THIS MAY NOT FIX THE SOLUTION AND I MAY NEED A MASTER PRESSURE SENSOR(SEVERAL HUNDRED MORE DOLLARS AT LEAST). I ASKED IF THERE WAS DAMAGE SOMEWHERE OR WAS IT A MALFUNCTION WITH THE COMPUTER AND THE SERVICE MAN STATED IT WAS A MALFUNCTION. I INQUIRED IF THIS WAS WARRANTED, BUT HE STATED NO. I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME VEHICLE. NUMEROUS PEOPLE STATED THEY PAID TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED, BUT THE PROBLEM CAME BACK AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS. HALF OF THE PEOPLE POSTING THEIR ISSUES STATED THEY HAD SERIOUS MECHANICAL ISSUES AS A RESULT OF THIS MALFUNCTION RESULTING IN FIRES, AUTOMATIC SHUT OFFS, LOW ACCELERATION, ETC. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY DRIVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE, BUT AM VERY AFRAID THAT THIS MALFUNCTION IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. *DT

THE FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH IN LARGE, WEIGHT-BEARING AREAS. SOME OF THE HOLES ARE 3 INCHES OR MORE IN DIAMETER. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. TOYOTA HAD A RUST PROOFING RECALL AROUND 2012. THEY SPRAYED SOME TAR-LIKE MATERIAL ON IT WHICH DID NO GOOD. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND HAVE TAKEN GOOD CARE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS FRAME IS EVERY BIT AS BAD AS ALL THE SEQUOIA FRAMES TOYOTA RECALLED AND REPLACED FROM MODEL YEAR 2005 ON. I DESERVE THE SAME TREATMENT AS THE LATER OWNERS WITH THEIR RUSTED FRAMES. LESS IMPORTANT BUT ANNOYING IS THE RUST ON THE BODY OVER THE LEFT READ WHEELWELL WHICH IS GLARINGLY OBVIOUS WHEN A PASSENGER OPENS THAT DOOR. YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH THAT PART OF THE BODY. IT HAPPENED WITHIN A FEW YEARS OF PURCHASE.
