THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION OF THIS COMPLAINT. MY WIFE AND CHILDREN WERE NEARLY INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT YESTERDAY DUE TO SUDDEN UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION IN OUR MINIVAN. BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER THAT IT MAY BE DRIVERS ERROR, AS EVIDENCED BY THE MYRIAD OF DISCUSSION ON THIS MATTER ON THE INTERNET, THE PROBLEM WAS CONFIRMED BY THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND ME; THE VAN CURRENTLY IS STUCK IN FULL ACCELERATION UPON STARTING---I TESTED THIS NUMEROUS TIMES YESTERDAY AND TODAY. THERE IS NO OBSTRUCTION TO THE THROTTLE CABLE, PEDAL, NOR A FLOOR MAT ISSUE. I HAVE CLEARLY CHECKED THESE ITEMS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE BUT APPARENTLY THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED/ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA OR NHTSA. THANKS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE CHANGING THE REAR LIGHT BULB, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THERE WAS NO SAFETY LATCH TO RELEASE AN OCCUPANT IF THEY BECAME TRAPPED IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. SHE IS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESIGNED WITH THAT FEATURE; THEREFORE, NO COMPENSATION WOULD BE PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 111,000.
5 MONTHS AGO MY SON WAS DRIVING MY CAR AND IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND HE COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO STOP EVEN WHEN HE PUT ON THE BRAKE. WHEN I GOT THE CAR, I STARTED THE ENGINE AND IT LUNGED FORWARD, BUT I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE JUST RACED. I ULTIMATELY TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE TOOK IT SOMEWHERE ELSE WERE THEY REPAIRED THE PROBLEM AFTER TWO ATTEMPTS. MY CAR DID NOT HAVE ANY DRIVER SIDE FLOOR MATS IN IT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. I TURNED LEFT INTO A PARKING SPACE AND PULLED FORWARD. WHILE STILL IN DRIVE, RATHER THAN STOPPING, THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE SLOWLY, RAN OVER A WOODEN PARKING BARRIER, AND CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE WALL A FEW FEET AWAY. *TR
THE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON OUR 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN QUIT WORKING. AFTER A MORNING OF RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I FEEL COMPELLED TO COMPLAIN AS THIS IS EVIDENTLY A RECURRING PROBLEM. IT CAN BE OPENED MANUALLY WITH MODERATE EFFORT. *TR
MY 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE (CAME ONLY WITH THIS ONE POWER DOOR) DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. IT DID NOT OPEN BY PRESSING THE BUTTON, IT WORKS TO CLOSE BUT NOT TIGHT. WHEN I CHOOSE TO USE IT MANUALLY, IT IS SO HEAVY THAT THE CHILDREN HAVE NOT ENOUGH STRENGTH TO OPEN IT. THEY HAVE TO EXIT THE CAR FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE OTHER THAN ON THE CURB SIDE. IT PLACES THE PASSENGERS IN DANGEROUS SITUATION, AS WELL AS TO THE DRIVER IF HE HAS TO COME OUT OF THE CAR TO HELP OPEN THE DOOR AT THE CURB SIDE. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT DOOR SHOULD BE OPERATED AS LIGHT AS THE OTHER DOOR WHEN IT IS IN THE MANUAL MODE AND THE COST TO FIX IS TOO MUCH (ABOUT $2,000) TO AFFORD. *TR
PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE/OPEN ELECTRONICALLY OR MANUALLY. THE BUTTON TO TURN OFF THE ELECTRONIC OPEN/CLOSE DID NOT WORK. TOYOTA SERVICE COULD NOT FIX. HAD THEM CUT CABLE SO CAN CLOSE AND OPEN DOOR MANUALLY. UNTIL THE CABLE WAS CUT, DOOR COULD NOT BE USED TO EXIT VAN. *TR
THE PASSENGER-SIDE SLIDING DOOR (MANUAL) ON OUR 2001 SIENNA BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS APPROX. 6 MO. AGO, WITH THE INSIDE BUTTON TO OPEN THE DOOR INTERMITTENTLY STICKING - HAPPENED BOTH IN OPEN & CLOSED POSITIONS. OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY CONCERN, BOTH FOR BEING ABLE TO CLOSE THE DOOR IN ORDER TO DRIVE, AND FOR OPENING THE DOOR PARTICULARLY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. AT THE BEGINNING, A GOOD "WHACK" ON THE DOOR WOULD USUALLY RELEASE THE BUTTON, AND THE DOOR WOULD FUNCTION. NOW, THE DOOR IS NOT WORKING AT ALL - THANKFULLY, IT IS IN THE CLOSED POSITION, BUT IT IS TOTALLY NON-FUNCTIONAL AS WE CANNOT OPEN IT AT ALL. HAD ONE OR TWO EPISODES OF THE DRIVER-SIDE DOOR GETTING STUCK OPEN - THE LATCH HAD A PROBLEM THAT PREVENTED CLOSURE (SEEMED THAT THE LATCH GOT INTO THE "LOCKED" POSITION SOMEHOW WHEN DOOR WAS OPEN, AND THEN WOULDN'T RELEASE IN ORDER TO CLOSE IT). NOW, THE REAR HATCH LOCK/LATCH IS NOT WORKING EITHER. WE CANNOT OPEN THE HATCH, WHICH IS EXTREMELY INCONVENIENT AND ALSO ANOTHER SAFETY CONCERN. IF ANY EMERGENCY WOULD HAPPEN WHICH WOULD REQUIRE US TO EXIT THE VEHICLE QUICKLY (OR IF WE NEEDED TO BE RESCUED FROM THE VEHICLE), THE ONLY DOORS THAT ACTUALLY WORK ALL THE TIME ARE THE TWO FRONT DOORS. THIS IS A HUGE CONCERN TO ME, PARTICULARLY IF WE HAVE PASSENGERS RIDING IN THE 3RD ROW SEATS. WE HAVE NOT YET TAKEN IT TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR - HAVE NOT HEARD OF GOOD OUTCOMES FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM, AND DON'T WANT TO SPEND A TON OF MONEY. *TR
I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS TO TOYOTA ABOUT MY 2002 SIENNA REGARDING STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THEY HAVE CHECKED THE CAR AND TOLD ME THEY FOUND NOTHING. THE CAR IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AT HIGH SPEEDS. *TR
WE OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN. ALL BUT 1 OF 5 DOOR HANDLES ON THIS VAN HAVE BROKEN AND THE DOOR HANDLES ON EACH OF THE 4 DOORS (EXCEPT PASSENGER FRONT) HAVE CRACKED AND BROKEN CLEAN OFF THE DOOR. CURRENTLY, THE DRIVER SIDE IS TAPED ON. I FEEL THAT THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO 1 BY USER WEAR. HOWEVER, I'M NOT INCLINED TO BELIEVE THAT ALL COULD BREAK SO EASILY FROM USER WEAR AND TEAR. THIS CREATES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD IN ACCESSING THE VEHICLE IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS AS CLEARLY THE ONLY ACCESS WILL BE THROUGH WINDOWS AT SOME POINT. *TR
ENGINE OIL LIGHT CAME ON, THEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, ENGINE SHUT OFF, NO OIL PRESENT IN ENGINE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE VEHICLE HAS DILL-ACP VALVE STEMS, MODEL TR-413. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE VEHICLE STRUCK A GUARDRAIL AND WAS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES AVAILABLE. SHE RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR THE VALVE STEMS ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2008. UPDATED 10/20/08 *BF
THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ALUMINUM ALLOY WHEEL RIMS ON MY TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN SHOW FATIGUE BREAKS. WHEN I ASKED A TIRE SHOP TO ROTATE THE TIRES, THEY NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE RIMS WAS SO BAD THAT THEY REFUSED TO PUT THE WHEEL BACK ON THE CAR. THE CRACK IN THIS ONE WAS VERY VISIBLE AND WAS SLIGHTLY VISIBLE IN ANOTHER. I HAVE REPLACED ALL FOUR RIMS, BUT I KEPT THE WORST ONE AND HAVE TAKEN PHOTOS THAT CLEARLY SHOW THAT ONE OF THE SPOKES IS BROKEN OVER MOST OF THE WIDTH OF THE SPOKE. THE CRACK IS VISIBLE FROM THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE RIM. I WOULD LIKE TO FORWARD THESE DIGITAL PHOTOS, IF YOU WILL PROVIDE AN EMAIL ADDRESS. *TR
I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN WITH 76,400 MILES. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS NEW PURCHASED IN LATE 2000. # . ANYHOW, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR NEAR OUR HOME ON AUGUST 2, HIT THE BRAKES MODERATELY HARD TO AVOID STRIKING A DEER, AND THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE DISINTEGRATED. IT WAS REPLACED TODAY BY CHIPPEWA AUTO, LOCATED NEAR HERE. THEY TOLD ME, AND GAVE ME THE PIECES, THAT THE RIGHT FRONT ROTOR BROKE LOOSE FROM ITS MOUNTING AND BROKE IN HALF, BECAUSE OF CORROSION. FURTHERMORE THE LEFT FRONT ROTOR WAS IN DANGER OF DOING THE SAME, AND WAS CRACKED LOOSE FOR 2/3 OF IT CIRCUMFERENCE. I COULD SUPPLY YOU THE PIECES FOR BOTH ROTORS, OR I COULD SEND SEVERAL DIGITAL PHOTOS BY E-MAIL. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED, ESPECIALLY FROM SOMEBODY LIKE TOYOTA AND THEIR VAUNTED QUALITY PROGRAM. IS THERE A RECALL ON THIS? IT COST ME $235.48. PAUL GARNER *TR
I PURCHASED THE SEAT AND RECEIVED IT MID-APRIL. I INSTALLED IT USING THE LATCH INTO OUR VAN FOR ABOUT 2 WKS AND THEN IT GOT MOVED TO OUR CAR AND WAS INSTALLED BY THE SEATBELT. WE THEN MOVED IT BACK TO THE VAN INSTALLING IT WITH LATCH FOR A LONG TRIP AND THE LATCH WAS STUCK OPEN SO WE HAD TO INSTALL IT USING THE SEATBELT. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN CE. IN THE PAST 1.5 YEARS ALL DOOR HANDLES HAVE SEPARATED FROM THE CAR. THIS INCLUDES THE DRIVER, PASSENGER, REAR DRIVER, REAR PASSENGER AND TAILGATE DOORS HANDLES. THESE HANDLES ARE MADE FROM PLASTIC AND CRACK AND BREAK OFF AT THE HINGE POINT. I DON'T BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF BREAKAGES OF THESE HANDLES CAN BE CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND CERTAINLY WITH TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND TWO ADULTS MAKING USE OF THE VEHICLE WOULD CONSTITUTE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THIS PROBLEM IS A DEFECT OF DESIGN OR WORKMANSHIP OF THE HANDLE AND THE COST TO REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $350 PER HANDLE. IT IS A SERIOUS THREAT SHOULD THEY BREAK AT THE IMPROPER TIME OR FOR EMERGENCY ACCESS TO THE AUTOMOBILE. I HAVE ADDRESSED MY CONCERNS WITH TOYOTA AND THEY DON'T BELIEVE THERE IS A NEED TO CORRECT. I AM FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT MY 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE WITH DUAL POWER SLIDING DOOR. THE POWER MALFUNCTIONED WITH ONLY 60000 MILES ON IT. NOW I KNOW MANY PEOPLE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE THIS QUALITY AND SAFEY ISSUE. I TURNED IT INTO MANUAL DOOR. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
OUR 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING GAS PEDAL PROBLEMS FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. FROM A STOPPED POSITION, THE GAS PEDAL STICKS UNTIL EXCESSIVE PRESSURE IS APPLIED. WHEN THE ACCELERATOR FINALLY ENGAGES, THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD. THIS PROBLEM MAKES THE VEHICLE FRIGHTENING TO DRIVE. THE FIRST TIME WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT (TOYOTA OF SANTA MARIA, CALIFORNIA) ABOUT THIS ISSUE WAS FEBRUARY 2008 (ODOMETER 101,112). THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD US THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT SERVICED THE THROTTLE BODY AND LUBRICATED THE EXPOSED THROTTLE CABLES. THE GAS PEDAL RESPONDED BETTER. IN NOVEMBER 2009 WE STARTED EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM AGAIN AND ON DECEMBER 10, 2009 WE TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT (ODOMETER 111,596). WE REQUESTED A SIMILAR SERVICE TO SEE IF IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMED TO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY HAD DONE ON THE PREVIOUS VISIT TO 'FIX' THE STICKY GAS PEDAL. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND WE TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME. WITHIN THE SAME DAY THE ACCELERATOR WAS STICKING. WE FELT UNSAFE DRIVING OUR TWO SMALL CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AND PARKED IT IN THE GARAGE FOR A MONTH UNTIL WE COULD TAKE IT BACK TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ON JANUARY 11, 2010 WE BROUGHT IT BACK AND INSISTED THEY FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WE WERE ASSURED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL WITH OUR VEHICLE, PERHAPS JUST SOME CARBON BUILD UP ON THE THROTTLE BODY PLATE. WE DIDN'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE HOME AND LEFT IT AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE IT HAS REMAINED TO THIS DAY. ON JANUARY 21, 2010, TOYOTA ANNOUNCED A RECALL DUE TO A STICKING GAS PEDAL THAT, IN PART, DESCRIBES OUR ISSUE. OUR 2001 SIENNA IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE NOTICED WATER ON THE FLOOR OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEN IT WOULD RAIN. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 94,000.
2001 TOYOTA SIENNA... THE PLASTIC DOOR HANDLES ARE BREAKING OFF... THE RIGHT, REAR SLIDER HANDLE BROKE OFF IN 2007. .NEXT THE LEFT, REAR SLIDER HANDLE BROKE OFF... THIS WAS DANGEROUS SINCE THE CHILD LOCK WAS ON PREVENTING OPENING THE DOOR FROM EITHER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE WITH THE CHILDREN TRAPPED INSIDE...NOW THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE HAS BROKEN.....TOYOTA DEALERSHIP CHARGES $89.73 FOR EACH HANDLE NOT INCLUDING INSTALLATION....IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME PLASTIC FATIGUE IS THE PROBLEM...3 OF 4 HANDLES HAVE FAILED IN PAST 3 YEARS...I CONTEND THESE HANDLES AS WELL AS THE FOURTH REMAINING WERE AND ARE DEFECTIVE. *TR
LEFT OUR HOME ABOUT 1045A. PUT VAN INTO "DRIVE" AFTER PULLING OUT OF DRIVEWAY IN REVERSE. UNABLE TO STOP WITH THE BRAKES AT STOP SIGN, APPROX 0.1 MILES FROM START. CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN, THROUGH THE STOP SIGN, THROUGH A RIGHT HAND TURN, THROUGH A LEFT HAND TURN. ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS "STUCK" AND COULD NOT GET IT LOOSE. BRAKES HAD NO EFFECT, INCLUDING ATTEMPTS AT EMERGENCY BRAKE USE. WENT UP A HILL HOPING TO SLOW THE VAN, BUT VAN INCREASED ACCELERATION. TREE WAS HIT WITH CENTER OF FRONT BUMPER. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. ENGINE CONTINUED TO "REV" AFTER IMPACT. EXITED VEHICLE. RIGHT FRONT TIRE EXPLODED, SEVERELY DAMAGING RIGHT FRONT QUARTER PANEL AREA/COMPONENTS. *TR
2005 TOYOTA SIENNA DRIVER SIDE DOOR MADE A LOUD POP WHEN OPENING. CUSTOMER STATED SHE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD HER IT WOULD COST 300 TO 400 DOLLARS. CONSUMER WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY SIENNA'S HAVE THIS PROBLEM. *KB THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THAT THE WELD ON THE DOOR HINGE WAS BROKEN. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A COLLISION CENTER AND WAS TOLD THE PRICE WOULD BE $250.00 DOLLARS. THE DEALER DID AGREE TO PAY HALF OF THE COST. *JB
SLIDING DOOR LATCHES GET STUCK SOMETIMES IN THE OPEN AND SOMETIMES IN THE CLOSED POSITION. WHEN DOORS ARE CLOSED WE ARE UNABLE TO PUSH THE BUTTON INSIDE OR USE THE OUTSIDE HANDLE TO RELEASE THE LATCH AND OPEN THE DOOR. IF THE DOOR IS OPEN WHEN THIS HAPPENS WE ARE THEN UNABLE TO CLOSE THE DOOR AS IT WILL NOT LATCH. WHEN THE DOOR REMAINS OPEN THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND THE VAN IS UNDRIVEABLE AS DOING SO WOULD PUT THE PASSENGERS AT RISK. WHEN THE DOOR IS STUCK IN A CLOSE POSITION IT MAKES EXITING THE VEHICLE DIFFICULT WHICH WOULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE IF THERE WERE AN EMERGENCY AND A QUICK EXIT WERE NECESSARY. IT ALSO MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FASTEN OR RELEASE A CHILD FROM A SAFETY SEAT LOCATED IN THE BACK 2 ROWS OF SEATS. THE BACK HATCH LATCH HAS ALSO BROKEN. A LIGHT SQUEEZE OF THE HANDLE WHILE TRYING TO OPEN THE HATCH CAUSED SOMETHING TO SNAP (A SMALL PLASTIC PIECE FELL OUT) AND SINCE THIS IS THE ONE AND ONLY HANDLE/LATCH TO OPEN THE HATCH I AM NO LONGER ABLE TO USE THE HATCH NOR OPEN IT TO SEE WHAT PART NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE TWO SIDE DOORS WORK OCCASIONALLY BUT THE BACK HATCH IS NOW COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. SIMPLY PUT I HAVE HAD 3 OUT OF MY FIVE DOORS FAIL WITHIN A MONTH WHICH I FIND ABSURD. PLEASE NOTE THE VEHICLE IS IN GOOD SHAPE OTHERWISE AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA LE/XLE
TWO ISSUES ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA WITH 113K MILES: 1) REAR LATCH HANDLE BROKE APART WHILE ATTEMPTING TO OPEN THE REAR HATCH. THE PART THAT BROKE IS PLASTIC. THE BREAK OCCURRED WHILE TRYING TO OPEN THE LATCH UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. CONSEQUENCE OF THIS PART FAILURE: UNABLE TO OPEN THE REAR HATCH. CORRECTION: TOYOTA DEALER HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MECHANISM (COSTING ME $200). 2) WHILE INVESTIGATING THE BROKEN LATCH ISSUE, I OBSERVED THAT THE MECHANISM THAT PHYSICALLY LATCHES THE REAR DOOR (TO THE MINIVAN BODY) WAS LOOSE. THE THREE SCREWS THAT SECURE/ATTACH THIS LATCHING MECHANISM IN PLACE WHERE BACKED HALF-WAY OUT. FAILURE: NO FAILURE HAD OCCURRED. AFTER STOPPING FOR REGISTRATION, MY SON AND I GOT BACK INTO OUR 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN TO CONTINUE ON TO OUR PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED SITE AT A CUB SCOUTS "JAMBOREE". I THINK THAT I HAD A SEIZURE (I DON'T REMEMBER ANYTHING AT THIS TIME). NEITHER I NOR MY CHILD WAS BUCKLED IN, AND WE TRAVELED ACROSS A FIELD AND ACROSS A SMALL CREEK, WITH THE END RESULT THE HEAD-ON COLLISION INTO THE FAR SIDE OF THE CREEK. I WAS BADLY INJURED, AND MY SON WAS DECLARED "BRAIN DEAD" 5 DAYS LATER. NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, AND I AM NOW REPORTING IT BECAUSE IF THEY HAD, WE MAY HAVE HAD AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT RESULT. ON OCTOBER 28,2006, MY SON AND I RETURNED TO THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT, THE NC STATE HIGHWAY PATROL DRIVING TRACK. ONCE THROUGH REGISTRATION, WE RE-ENTERED THE 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN. UNFORTUNATELY, WE DID NOT USE THE SEAT BELTS, SINCE WE COULD SEE THE SPOT WE HAD BEEN ASSIGNED. SOMETIME DURING THIS MOVE, I MUST HAVE HAD A SEIZURE, SINCE THE ONLY THING I REMEMBER IS SOMEONE HELPING ME OUT OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. ONCE AT THE HOSPITAL, I LAPSED INTO A COMA, WHICH WAS TO LAST FOR THE NEXT 18 DAYS. ONCE I WOKE UP, I WAS TOLD THAT MY SON HAD DIED, AND WAS BURIED. IT WAS STATED TO ME THAT WE WEREN'T WEARING OUR SEAT BELTS. I SAID, "WHAT ABOUT THE AIRBAGS?" THEY HADN'T DEPLOYED, IT TURNED OUT. I REALIZE THAT WE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SAFE IF WE HAD BEEN WEARING OUR SEAT BELTS. BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT THE AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED, SINCE THE ESTIMATED SPEED AT TIME OF IMPACT WAS 50 MPH. SINCE WE HAD GONE THROUGH A CREEK, AND SLAMMED INTO THE OPPOSITE CREEK BANK IN A BASIC HEAD ON COLLISION. I ALSO KNOW THAT THINGS WOULD HAVE BEEN CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT IF THE AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED, SINCE BOTH MY SON AND I SUSTAINED TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES (TBI'S) . ONCE I WAS ABLE TO USE A COMPUTER, I RESEARCHED AIRBAG FAILURES IN TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND FOUND NUMEROUS INCIDENTS AND ANECDOTES OF OTHER PEOPLES'S EXPERIENCE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM - FAILURE OF THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY, WHEN IT WAS CLEARLY OBVIOUS THAT THEY WERE NEEDED. I ALSO WONDERED ABOUT THE COMMONALITY OF THE PROBLEM, AND BEGAN TO SUSPECT A COMPANY-WIDE POLICY TO MAKE IT VERY HARD FOR THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY, SINCE IT WAS A HOT TOPIC THEN TO TALK ABOUT AIRBAGS AS AN ENEMY, SINCE SOME REPORTS WERE NOTING ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES ATTRIBUTED TO THE AIRBAGS' MIS-DEPLOYMENT. I AM NOT AT PEACE WITH THE TOYOTA COMPANY'S USUAL DENIAL OF ANYTHING NOT WORKING PERFECTLY AND PROPERLY AND THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE INVOLVING THEIR AIRBAGS.
CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN FOR 15 MINUTES, BRAKES WORKED, WAS PARKED FOR 30 MINUTES AND UPON PULLING OUT OF DRIVEWAY REALIZED BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION. WAS ABLE TO BRAKE THE CAR WITH PARKING BRAKE. I HAD TWO INCIDENTS OF TIRE FAILURE ON THE HIGHWAY WHERE THE TIRES JUST CAME APART AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH. THE FIRST TIRE HAD ABOUT 40K MILES ON IT AND THE 2ND TIRE HAD 50K MILES ON IT. I HAD A CLOSE CALL, BUT NO ACCIDENT. *NM

2001 TOYOTA SIENNA LE, PURCHASED NEW, STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS. "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON WHEN VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 25,000 PLUS/MINUS MILES. UNDER WARRANTY, TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE OXYGEN SENSOR WITHOUT A CHARGE. HOWEVER, DURING THIS PROCESS, THE "BEEP" SIGNAL YOU HEAR WHEN LOCKING-UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE WITH REMOTE KEY WAS DISAPPEARED. THIS IS ALSO FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 35,000 MILES. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SAID IT IS DUE TO A DIRTY VACUUM HOSE, THEY CLEANED IT WITH A CHARGE LITTLE OVER $100.00. THEN I BROUGHT MY VAN TO STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA (SAN JOSE, CA) WHERE I BOUGHT THE SIENNA VAN FOR REPAIR. AFTER THE TOYOTA TECHNICIAN OPENED UP FOR INSPECTION, I LATER WENT THERE TO TOOK SOME PHOTOS OF THE CONDITIONS, I FOUND OUT THAT THE MAIN CAUSE FOR THE MALFUNCTION OF THE SHIFTER WAS A BIG PIECE OF CAST IRON (APPROX. 1/2" THICK) THAT SERVES AS A MAIN FRAME OR BRACKET FOR ALL OTHER COMPONENTS IN THE ASSEMBLY FOR SUPPORT OF THEIR MOVING MECHANISM BROKE IN HALF ( HAVE PHOTOS TO PROVE IT) LITERALLY. SINCE IT APPEARS AS A "DEFECTIVE PART" OF THE SHIFTER AND NOT A "WEAR & TEAR" CONDITION, I 'VE REQUESTED TOYOTA CORP. (BOTH LOCAL & HEADQUARTES) TO REPLACE IT WITH FREE OF CHARGE. THE REQUEST WAS DECLINED DUE TO WARRANTY POLICY BEYOND 30,000 MILES/ 3 YEAR. THEN TOYOTA CORP. AGENT THAT HAVE THEY SEEN OR HEARD ANYTHING SIMILAR LIKE MY CASE, NOBODY COULD CONFIRM IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM OF "WEAR & TEAR" BEYOND WARRANTY PERIOD. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED TOYOTA OF CLIFTON PARK TO TELL THEM AND TOOK IT THERE THE FOLLOWING MORNING. THEY GAVE US TWO OPTIONS, ONE FULL REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF APPROX 1,340 + TAX OR TO HAVE THEM ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE GLUE AND WE WOULD HAVE TO LET IT "CURE" FOR A FEW DAYS. WE DIDN'T DRIVE IT FOR APPROX 8 DAYS AND TWO DAYS AFTER DRIVING IT, IT FLEW OFF AGAIN, THIS TIME I WAS ALONE AN COULDN'T GRAB IT AND IT BLEW OUT AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE CAUSING PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THAT CAR. WE TOLD TOYOTA ORIGINALLY THAT IT HAD TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, YOU DON'T DRIVE AROUND AND EXPECT THE WINDOWS TO BLOW OUT OF YOUR CAR. THEY SAID BECAUSE WE WERE OVER OUR 50000 MILES THEY WOULDN'T BE RESPONSIBLE. NOW IN ADDITION TO THEM NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR A DEFECTIVE MOONROOF, THEY ALSO GAVE US BAD ADVISE ON FIXING IT. THEY TOLD US ONLY ONE VERY EXPENSIVE OPTION AND THEN ONE VERY CHEAP. AFTER METLIFE SENT AN ENGINEER FROM AN INDEPENDENT COMPANY DID WE FIND OUT THEY USED AN APPOXY THAT ISN'T MEANT FOR FIXING SUNROOF'S OR CARS. *JB

THE BUTTON GOT STUCK FROM THE INSIDE WHICH PREVENTED THE DOOR FROM LATCHING SHUT. THIS HAD HAPPENED MANY TIMES BEFORE BUT WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE BUTTON POPPED OUT AND THE DOOR WOULD SHUT. BUT ON ONE OCCASION THE BUTTON POPPED OUT AND THE DOOR STILL WOULD NOT SHUT. WE HAD TO DRIVE HOME HOLDING THE DOOR SHUT THE ENTIRE WAY! OF COURSE, THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE WITH OUR 2 YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED AT THE DEALER (AGAIN NOT UNDER WARRANTY), BUT THE DOOR STILL CAN NOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE, OR THE BUTTON GETS STUCK IN. #3- CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND A DIAGNOSTIC TEST REVEALED THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS- IDLE AIR CONTROL, BANK 1 SENSOR (MOST LIKELY OXYGEN SENSOR), LEAKY CHARCOAL CANISTER. WE FIXED THE IDLE AIR CONTROL SINCE THAT WAS CAUSING THE VAN TO NOT START AND STALL. THIS REPAIR WAS ALMOST $700, AND NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE WE HAD GONE OVER 36,000 MILES. WE DID NOT FIX THE OTHER TWO PROBLEMS LAST MONTH DUE TO COST. THE VAN OVERHEATS AND CAN NOT BE DRIVEN. WE WROTE A LETTER TO TOYOTA AND TALKED TO THEM VIA PHONE. THEY TOLD US THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BECAUSE OUR VAN IS NOT A LEGAL US VAN- IT IS WAS BUILT IN CANADA. WE BOUGHT IT AT A TOYOTA DEALER IN ROCHESTER, NY AND WERE NEVER TOLD IT WAS CANADIAN. I SUSPECT THE PROBLEM HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, SPECIFICALLY THE 50-MONTH OLD BATTERY. BUT EVEN IF THE BATTERY IS LOW ON POWER, WHY SHOULD THE DOOR LOCKS BE INOPERABLE? SHOULD THE LOCKS AUTOMATICALLY REVERT TO THE OPEN POSITION IF THERE IS INSUFFICIENT ELECTRICAL POWER?

THREE WEEKS AGO, AS I WAS DRIVING ON AN EXPRESSWAY AT A SPEED OF 55 MPH, MY HOOD JUST POPPED OPENED AND HIT MY WINDSHIELD WITH A FORCE OF DYNAMITE. LUCKILY I DIDNT GET PANIC AND LOOKED THROUGH THE CLEARANCE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ARCHED HOOD AND SLOWLY STOPPED THE VEHICLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. NOBODY GOT HURT. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THIS DEALER, THEY FOUND THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH WAS FAULTY AND WAS LEFT OPENED THAT SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THE HOOD TO COME LOOSE IN CASE SOMEONE LIFT THE HOOD OPENER FROM INSIDE BY MISTAKE. (THERE IS A TENSION SPRING IN LATCH MECHANISM THAT KEEPS THE HOOK ENGAGED TO KEEP THE HOOD FROM FREEING WAS NOT STRONG ENOUGH) I ASKED THE DEALER IF THIS FAULTY LATCH WOULD BE COVERED UNDER TOYOTA SAFETY PROGRAM BUT WAS REFUSED AND PAID FOR IT OUT OF MY POCKET. I HAVE INFORM TOYOTA ABOUT THIS INCIDENT AS WELL AS TO ADVISE TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY AND AT LEAST PAY FOR MY REPAIR COST OF THE LATCH AND OTHER DAMAGES DONE TO MY CAR DUE TO THIS INCIDENT. I COULD HAVE LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND HAD RUN INTO SOMEONE ELSE. I AM IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PROFESSION AND WOULD SUGGEST TAKING A DEEPER LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM SINCE I KNOW ANOTHER PERSON WHO HAD IDENTICAL PROBLEM WITH THE SAME MODEL YEAR. BUT TOYOTA CORPORATION, AFTER WRITING THEM TWICE INSISTS THEIR VEHICLES HAVE NO PROBLEM. MAY BE OTHER PEOPLE DOESNT WANT TO TAKE TIME TO WRITE WHAT THEY HAVE FACED. BUT TWO SIMILAR INCIDENTS CANNOT BE A CO-INCIDENT. I WANT THIS REPORT TO BE KNOWN TO OTHER 2001-TOYOTA SIENNA OWNERS SO THEY BECOME AWARE OF THIS SEEMINGLY SMALL UN- REPORTED BUT DEADLY PROBLEM THANKS SYED N MASOOD. *JB
THE VAPOR VALVE, WHICH USUALLY STOPS THE REFUELING WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FILLED UP, HAS BEEN FAULTY. IN ESSENCE, WHEN TRYING TO FILL UP A GAS, THE PRESSURE IN THE GAS TANK BUILDS UP AND STOPS THE GAS PUMP FROM REFUELING EVERY 1 TO 2 GALLONS IT HAS TAKEN US MANY GARAGE VISITS, INCLUDING TOYOTA DEALERS, TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY. TOYOTA USA REFUSED TO COVER THE PROBLEM SINCE THEY CLAIMS THAT OUR CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY (TOYOTA SIENNA LE 2001). WE ONLY CONTEND THAT THIS DEFECT WAS DUE TO THE FAULTY ORIGINAL INSPECTION AT THE FACTORY AND ASK THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS OWN PRODUCTS. *JB
THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT RETRACTOR WOULD NOT RETRACT. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
CONSUMER WAS DRIVING AND FELL ASLEEP.. AFTER WAKING UP THE VEHICLE WAS IN A DITCH, AND ALL THE OCCUPANTS WERE ASLEEP IN THE VEHICLE. THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS TO BE INSPECTED.*AK
WHEN I GOT HOME PUT VEHICLE IN PARK EXITED VEHICLE WITH IT STILL RUNNING. VEHICLE JUMPED INTO GEAR HIT MY GARAGE CAUSING DAMAGE TO GARAGE. *JB
VEHICLE SURGED BACKWARDS AT HIGH SPEED WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE.*MR *JB
