WHILE DRIVING STEERING SUDDENLY GOT HARD. THEN IT WAS NORMAL AGAIN FOR A BIT. I NOTICED THAT AFTER MAKING LEFT TURN IT WAS HARD TO STEER RIGHT AND VICE VERSA WHEN TURNING RIGHT. CHECKED POWER STEERING AND WAS GOOD. RESEARCH ON FORUMS SUGGESTED A EXPOSED KNUCKLE ON A PART 45203A CALLED SHAFT, STEERING INTERMEDIATE, NO.2. AFTER LUBRICATION TO THE KNUCKLE AREA THE STEERING HAS IMPROVED THOUGH NOT 100%. PART SHOULD INCLUDE AT A MINIMUM GREASE FITTINGS FOR LUBRICATION, PREFERABLY A TYPE OF PROTECTION FROM EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS SUCH AS A RUBBER BOOT. THIS LOSS OF STEERING MAY RESULT IN THE OPERATOR LOSING CONTROL OF VEHICLE. *TR
I HAD THIS VEHICLE INSPECTED BY TOYOTA AND THEY STATED SURFACE RUST ON FRAME. THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 47000 MILES AND THE RUST IS NOT SURFACE RUST, IN MY OPINION, FOR THE MILEAGE. THE VEHICLE WILL CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE IF TOYOTA DOESN'T DO SOMETHING ABOUT REPAIRING OR REPLACING THE FRAME. TOYOTA HAS RECALLED 1995.5 THROUGH 2004 AND HAVE REPAIRED OR REPLACED FRAMES. TOYOTA NEEDS TO CONTINUE THEIR RECALL TO INCLUDE LATER VEHICLES WITH RUSTING PROBLEMS. IF TOYOTA DOES NOT STEP UP TO CORRECT THIS RUSTING PROBLEM IT WILL, IF IT HASN'T ALREADY BECOME A NATIONAL SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR
I TOOK MY TRUCK TO GET IT INSPECTED AND THEY SAID THERE ARE HOLES IN THE FRAME A LARGE AS MY HAND. IT WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION AND CANNOT BE DRIVEN. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MY 2 LITTLE SONS AROUND IN THIS VEHICLE WHICH HAS BEEN UNSAFE FOR A LONG TIME. THE HOLES ARE BIG ENOUGH TO HAVE STARTED YEARS AGO AS A SMALL HOLE WHICH MAKE THE TRUCK UNDRIVABLE. I HAVE A NICE LOOKING TRUCK THAT CANNOT BE DRIVEN. THE 1ST GENERATION TACOMAS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS SAME REASON. WHAT IS TOYOTA GOING TO DO? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AND MAKING A LEFT TURN, AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD FROM UNDER THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT LATER DISCOVERED THAT THE METAL STRAPS USED TO SECURE THE FUEL TANK TO THE VEHICLE HAD RUSTED AND FRACTURED, CAUSING THE RIGHT FRONT SECTION OF THE FUEL TANK TO HANG FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT THE FRACTURED METAL STRAP WOULD MAKE CONTACT WITH THE DRIVE SHAFT WHENEVER THE CONTACT WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,000. ..UPDATED 04-22-14 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER WAS CHARGING HIM $1900 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. TWO MORE STRAPS BROKE, WHEN THE DEALER PUT THE VEHICLE ON THE RACK, WHICH CAUSED THE TANK TO FALL PULLING OUT THE GAS LINES AND WIRING, AS WELL AS CRACKING THE TANK. UPDATED 04/23/14.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE, HE NOTICED THE FRAME UNDER THE MOTOR MOUNT WAS DETERIORATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED, DETERIORATED, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000. UPDATED 04/17/14*LJ *TR
VEHICLE AT REPAIR SHOP TO BE INSPECTED AND FAILED DUE TO RUST PERFORATION OF FRAME. BROUGHT IT TO DEALER AND THEY TOOK PICTURES AND SENT TO TOYOTA AND STILL WAITING. THEY STATED UP TO 2004 YEAR MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR SAME PROBLEM BUT NOT THE 2005 YEAR MODELS WHICH MAKES NO SENSE AS 2005 IS A NEWER MODEL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY ARE DOING RECALLS IN THE BOSTON AREA FOR THIS PROBLEM AND IT SHOULD COME TO NY SOON. HOWEVER, THIS MAKES NO SENSE AS RECALLS ARE NATIONWIDE AND NOT AREA SPECIFIC. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND WE WOULD LIKE THIS FIXED AT TOYOTA'S EXPENSE. WE DID HAVE THE CAR UNDERCOATED AND RUST PROOFED WHEN WE BOUGHT THE CAR. *TR
I WAS PULLING INTO A CURB PARKING SPACE WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE ON MY TRUCK ACCELERATED. MY FOOT WAS ALREADY ON THE BRAKE SO I PUSHED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BUT I WAS SLOWLY MOVING FORWARD ANYWAY. MY BRAKES WERE SMOKING FROM TRYING TO STOP MY TRUCK. I HIT THE BACK OF A PARKED CAR AND PUSHED IT APPROXIMATELY TWO PARKING SPACES BEFORE I THOUGHT TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF. *TR
THE FRAME IS RUSTED AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. *TR
I WAS PULLING INTO THE GARAGE; AS I BEGAN TO BRAKE TO BRING THE TRUCK TO A HALT, THE ENGINE RACED AND THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES STARTED GOING OFF AS I STOOD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE TRUCK PROBABLY WOULD HAVE GONE THROUGH THE BACK OF THE GARAGE HAD I NOT THROWN THE GEAR SELECTOR INTO NEUTRAL. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I'VE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE, BUT IT'S THE FIRST TIME I HAD OTHERS IN IT WITH ME AND FIRST TIME I WAS WORRIED ABOUT GETTING THE VEHICLE STOPPED BEFORE AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED. I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER IF THIS VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD. I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE APPROPRIATE COURSE OF ACTION IS. THE PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS ONCE IN A WHILE, SO IT SEEMS LIKE TAKING IT TO THE DEALER WOULDN'T PRODUCE ANY RESULTS. *TR
I WENT TO GET MY 2005 TACOMA INSPECTED TODAY AND IT FAILED BECAUSE THERE IS A HOLE IN THE FRAME BY THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL. I'VE BEEN THE ONLY OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND WAS COMPLETELY SURPRISED THAT THE FRAME HAS STARTED TO RUST TO THE POINT WHERE THERE ARE HOLES IN IT. THIS TRUCK IS PRIMARILY DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY AND WEAR AND TEAR IS PRETTY MINIMAL. INSPECTING THE FRAME AFTERWARDS, THE ENTIRE FRAME IS RUSTED. THIS ISSUE WITH MY TRUCK IS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. I CAN PROVIDE PICTURES IF NEEDED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FRAME WAS PERFORATED DUE TO RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE WAS CONFIRMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FRAME ON MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA PRE RUNNER IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT DUE TO A FLAW IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THE RECALL WAS 3 MONTHS PAST THE DATE OF THE END OF THE RECALL. NOW MY VEHICLE HAS LARGE CRACKS IN THE FRAME AND IS NO LONGER SAFE. THIS ISSUE STILL EXISTS IN THE 2005 MODEL AND MUST BE ADDRESSED FOR PUBLIC SAFETY. THERE WAS A RECALL THAT COVERED THIS PROBLEM UP UNTIL THE END OF 2004. MINE WAS PURCHASED IN THE BEGINNING OF 2005. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS TRUCK AND IS BEING IGNORED BY TOYOTA. THEY ARE FAILING TO REPAIR THIS AND PICKING AND CHOOSING IF THEY INFACT WANT TO REPAIR SOME TRUCKS AND NOT OTHERS. TOYOTAS OPTIONS ON THE FACT THAT MY TRUCK HAS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT THAT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. PLEASE HELP!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, WHO STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000. UPDATED 02/19/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED AS OF FEB 10, 2014, HE WAS STILL WAITING ON THE DISTRICT REP TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. UPDATED 02/24/14
I TOOK MY TOYOTA TACOMA, 2005 IN FOR A NEW HEADLIGHT. THE TOYOTA DEALER SAID THAT THE INSPECTION WOULD RUN AT MONTH'S END AND WOULD I LIKE TO TAKE CARE OF THE INSPECTION WHILE I WAITED RATHER THAN MAKING A SECOND APPOINTMENT. I SAID "YES", PLEASE DO THE INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN SAID THE TRUCK FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO A RUSTED FRAME. HE CALLED ME BACK TO VIEW THE RUSTED OUT FRAME, WHICH I DID TO MY SHOCK AND HORROR - THERE WAS A LARGE WHOLE! LOOKED UNSAFE! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE - CLEARLY DEFECTIVE FRAME. THEY SUGGESTED I TAKE THE TRUCK BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TOYOTA DEALER WHICH I DID - ALTHOUGH NOT SURE WHY THEY COULD NOT DEAL WITH 'TOYOTA" THEMSELVES. THE ORIGINAL DEALER SAID THE FRAME REPLACEMENT / REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE COST WOULD BE BETWEEN $10,000 - $14,000. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE, THE TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 53K MILES. TOYOTA IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ORGANIZATION THAT PRIDES ITSELF IN SAFETY AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, TOUTING ITS VEHICLE LONGEVITY STATUS! THIS EXPERIENCE PROVES OTHERWISE AND PUTS THE PUBLIC AT RISK OF INJURY OR/AND DEATH. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED. ALSO, THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE MOTOR MOUNTS AND THE BRACKETS WERE CORRODED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 192,000.
UPON INSPECTING THE UNDERSIDE OF MY 2005 TACOMA, I DISCOVERED HOLES IN BOTH SIDES OF THE INNER FRAME BEHIND THE FRONT WHEELS THAT HAD RUSTED RIGHT THROUGH THE FRAME. THE RUST CONTINUES TO SPREAD AND THE HOLES ARE GETTING LARGER. *TR
SUMMER 2012 THE CROSS MEMBER HOLDING THE SPARE TIRE FELL OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. NOW (JANUARY 2014) A LARGE (THREE INCH) PERFORATION HAS APPEARED IN THE FRONT FRAME. THE TRUCK FRAME IS ROTTING OUT FAST. *TR
MASSIVE AMOUNT OF FRAME RUST, WORRIED ABOUT SAFETY. REVIEWED BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER AND TOYOTA REP THAT HAPPENED TO BE AT DEALERSHIP. WAS TOLD THAT RUST WAS NOT NORMAL AND PICTURES WERE TAKEN, TOLD THAT IT WAS DOCUMENTED BUT NOT TO EXPECT FURTHER ACTION. *TR
PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY TO PARK MY 2005 TACOMA AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY TACOMA ACCELERATES FORWARD AND PLUNGES INTO THE REAR END OF MY 2000 CORVETTE WHICH WAS PARKED IN MY GARAGE, AND DOES $1321.22 IN DAMAGE. THE FORCE FROM THE TACOMA KNOCKED MY CORVETTE ABOUT 3 FEET FORWARD INTO A FREEZER IN THE GARAGE. I WAS APPROXIMATELY 6 FEET BEHIND THE CORVETTE, AND THE CORVETTE WAS IN GEAR AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS APPLIED, WHEN THE TACOMA SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD. I HAVE BEEN PARKING IN SAME LOCATION OR 9 YEARS AND THIS HAS NEVER OCCURRED BEFORE. I HAVE HAD ALL RECALLS DONE CONCERNING THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM WITH THE TACOMA. THIS WAS NOT A PEDAL PROBLEM, IT IS A TOYOTA PROBLEM. IF HIS HAD HAPPENED AT A INTERSECTION WHO KNOWS WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED. SOMEONE NEEDS TO "FIX" THIS PROBLEM. *TR
IT WAS CLEAR AND DRY ON THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. THE HOV LANE WAS DRY AND NEWLY PAVED. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 65-60 MPG WHEN I SAW BRAKE LIGHTS. I BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND STEP ON THE BRAKES AT ABOUT 300 FEET. SUDDENLY, I NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WAS NOT STOPPING, BUT RATHER THAT IT HAD ALREADY STOPPED! AT APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET AWAY FROM THE CAR, I PRESSED MY BRAKE PETAL TO THE FLOOR. AT 20 FEET BEHIND HIM, I SAID TO MYSELF THAT MY VEHICLE HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO STOP BEFORE HITTING HIM. BUT SOMETHING HAPPENED AT THIS POINT. IT FELT LIKE SOMEONE WAS PUSHING MY VEHICLE FROM THE BACK (IT WAS NOT BEING PUSHED), OR THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, OR THAT THE ABS SYSTEM RELEASED THE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES. THE RESULT WAS THAT I REAR-ENDED THE VEHICLE. ALTHOUGH OUR AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, NEITHER I NOR MY PASSENGER HAD CONTACT WITH THE AIRBAGS. I WAS PROBABLY GOING LESS THAN 15 MPH AT IMPACT. WHEN BRAKING, I NEVER FELT THE TATTLE-TELL FEELING OF A PULSATING BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM GOES INTO EFFECT. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS SYSTEM IN THE PAST WHEN DRIVING IN 4-WHEEL DRIVE IN SNOW AND DRIVING OFF ROAD. THE ABS SYSTEM WOULD TAKE THE BRAKING CONTROL AWAY FROM ME, WHICH HAS CAUSED SOME PROBLEMS. THIS HAPPENED IN 2009 (OFF ROAD) AND 2010 IN DEEP SNOW. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO EXAMINE MY BRAKING AND ABS SYSTEM. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. IF THE ABS IS AT FAULT, THIS WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2010 AND THE FIRST TIME ON DRY ROAD. THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR MY VEHICLE SAY THAT IT ONLY TAKES 126 FEET TO MAKE A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND SOLD BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THEY WILL HOLD IT FOR ONLY 4 DAYS FOR INVESTIGATION. THE VEHICLE WAS RECALLED AND SERVICED FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA REGIONAL OFFICE ON 02/27/2014, BUT THEY WILL NOT DO AN INVESTIGATION. *TR
STARTED HEARING RUBBING/GRINDING TYPE NOISE COMING FROM FRONT END. INSPECTED AND FOUND LF CV AXLE LEAKING GREASE, SO THOUGHT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM THERE. REPLACED LF CV AXLE, AND THE NOISE DID NOT GO AWAY. INSPECTED FURTHER AND FOUND DRIVERS SIDE FRAME WHERE THE MOTOR MOUNT BRACKET IS WELDED TO CRACKED, CAUSING THE MOTOR TO FLEX AND THE FAN TO RUB ON THE FAN SHROUD. CONTACTED TOYOTA, WHO INSTRUCTED ME TO GET IT INSPECTED AT A DEALERSHIP. TOOK TO TOYOTA DEALER, WHO TOLD ME THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF DRIVER ABUSE, NO RUST, NOT REALLY ANYTHING THAT SHOWED WHY THE WELD HAD BROKEN, BUT THAT TOYOTA DID NOT WANT TO DO ANYTHING DUE TO AFTERMARKET LIFT AND OVERSIZED TIRED. LIFT WAS ALREADY INSTALLED ON VEHICLE WHEN PURCHASED AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA CORPORATE TOLD ME THEY DID NOT WANT TO HELP BECAUSE VEHICLE IS OUT OF FACTORY WARRANTY. THE STEERING SHAFT IS DIRECTLY UNDER THE PART OF THE MOTOR THAT IS SAGGING DOWN, AND I AM AFRAID IF IT WERE TO BREAK COMPLETELY IT MIGHT STOP THE VEHICLE FROM BEING ABLE TO TURN. ALSO, IS THERE NOW EXTRA STRESS ON ANY OF THE WIRING? IS IT FLEXING AND POTENTIALLY BREAKING ANY FUEL LINES? I HAVE DONE SOME REASEARCH ON THIS, AND FOUND A LOT OF PEOLPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES WITH THEIR TRUCKS. TOYOTA HAS STARTED PUTTING UPDATED FRAMES WITH MORE SUPPORT FOR THE MOTOR MOUNTS ON THE 2007 MODELS, KNOWING THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THE 05/06S, BUT ARE REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND FIX THE ONES THAT HAVE BROKEN. *TR
DURING A REPAIR VISIT TO TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER I WAS INFORMED THAT MY FRAME WAS RUSTING IN SEVERAL PLACES. I WAS TOLD THAT AT THE PRESENT TIME THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE BUT THAT THE RUST WOULD CONTINUE AND LEAD TO AN UNSAFE CONDITION. TOYOTA IS AWARE OF RUSTING PROBLEMS WITH PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS. I SEE THAT THE 2004 AND EARLIER MODEL YEARS WERE RECALLED FOR RUSTING FRAMES. DEALERSHIPS WAS ALSO AWARE OF AN INCREASE IN FRAME RUSTING CASES IN 2005 TACOMA TRUCKS AS WELL. TRUCK ONLY HAS 66,000 MILES AND WAS NOT USED FOR HEAVY HAULING. REPAIR OR REINFORCEMENT IS NOT AN OPTION. ONLY REMEDY OFFERED BY TOYOTA WAS FOR ME TO REPLACE THE FRAME AT A COST OF $13,000. I FEEL THIS IS AN UNSAFE DESIGN FLAW THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. *TR
FRAME AT PASSENGER SIDE MOTOR MOUNT IS CRACKED AND FAILED. BECAUSE IT'S VERY UNUSUAL FOR A TRUCK FRAME TO CRACK, NOTIFIED TOYOTA (HILO, HAWAII) OF THE PROBLEM AND ASKED IF THERE IS A RECALL TO ADDRESS IT. TOYOTA SAID IT'S NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND THERE IS NO RECALL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE FRONT PORTION OF THE FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE TAILGATE OF THE VEHICLE LACKS THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY TO SERVE ITS INTENDED PURPOSE. SINCE THE TAILGATE IS DESIGNED TO BE OPENED TO A FLAT POSITION FOR LOADING OR UNLOADING ITEM(S) PLACED IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK IT WILL CERTAINLY REQUIRE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF STRENGTH FOR THIS PURPOSE. I NOTICED THAT MY TAIL GATE WAS NO LONGER STRAIGHT ACROSS WHEN IN THE CLOSE POSITION BUT HAD A CONCAVE APPEARANCE. I WORRIED THAT THE TAIL GATE MAY COME UNLATCHED WHILE IN THE UP POSITION OR WORSE BY COLLAPSING BY FOLDING IN THE MIDDLE IF USING IT TO CARRY A PARTIAL LOAD. I LOAD MY 4-WHEELER IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK AT TIMES AND DUE TO THE SHORT BED HAVE TO LEAVE THE REAR TIRES RESTING ON THE TAIL GATE. THE WEIGHT, ALTHOUGH NOT EXCESSIVE, SEEMED TO POSSIBLY BE THE CAUSE OF THE DISTRESS ON THE TAILGATE. I REMOVED THE INTERIOR COVER AS WELL AS THE TOP TAILGATE COVER FOR INSPECTION. MY INSPECTION DID REVEAL TWO CREASES IN THE TAILGATE TOP SECTION (WHEN IN THE CLOSE POSITION) ABOUT 18" FROM THE RIGHT TOP AND THE SAME DISTANCE FROM THE LEFT TOP SIDE. I CALLED TOYOTA TO SEE IF ANY POSSIBLE RECALL WAS IN PLACE TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO SUCH RECALL. I ASKED IF THEY RECOMMENDED ANY REMEDY FOR THE CONDITION THAT I DESCRIBED AND THEY SUGGESTED A COMPANY THAT DOES AFTERMARKET TRUCK MODIFICATIONS. IF THIS TAILGATE ISN'T DESIGNED TO CARRY A LOAD THAN A PERMANENT WARNING SIGN SHOULD BE CLEARLY VIEWED FROM THE TAILGATE POSITION AT OR NEAR THE HANDLE OR THE FLAT SURFACE WHEN THE TAILGATE IS LOWERED. SINCE IT IS APPARENT THAT AT TIMES A LOAD WILL TRAVEL ACROSS THE TAIL GATE MOVING INTO THE BED CAVITY OR BE REQUIRED TO REST ON THE TAILGATE, IT SHOULD MEET ALL LOAD REQUIREMENT THAT COULD BE REASONABLY ANTICIPATED. *TR
ON THE TOP PART OF MY HOOD ON MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA PRE-RUNNER. THE PAINT IS CHIPPING/ FLAKING OFF TO WHERE THE METAL IS BEING SHOWN. THE PAINT EVERYWHERE ELSE ON MY TRUCK IS FINE, EXCEPT ON THE TRIM AROUND THE WHEEL-WELL IS FADING. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS WITH THE REAR CONSOLE LATCH WHICH CLOSES AND OPENS THE CONSOLE BROKE AFTER EIGHT MONTHS OF DRIVING MY TRUCK. THE LATCH DID FEEL LIKE IT WAS STICKY UNTIL I CLOSED THE TOP PART OF THE CONSOLE AND THE LATCH BROKE OFF. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE IT OFF MYSELF BUT I EVENTUALLY FOUND OUT IN ORDER TO REPLACE THAT PART I WOULD HAVE TO BUY AN ENTIRE NEW CONSOLE FOR A PART I TOOK OFF IN LESS THAN THIRTY SECONDS. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA NOW FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS ABOUT EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME OF MY 2005 TACOMA. I HAD EVEN REPORTED IT ON HERE BEFORE DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF RUST. MY TRUCK WAS AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE MANAGER WANTED TO SHOW ME 2 HOLES IN MY FRAME AS A RESULT OF RUST. ONE HOLE WAS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GOLF BALL AND THE OTHER ABOUT THE SIZE OF A MARBLE. I HAVE DONE SOME MORE RESEARCH AND NEAR ALL OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT RUST ON THE SECOND GENERATION TACOMAS ARE IN THE SAME LOCATION. THE HOLES ARE ON BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE RIGHT NEXT TO THE CAT. CONVERTS. APPARENTLY TOYOTA HAS REPLACED SOME OF THE SECOND GENERATION FRAMES BUT IT IS ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. IRONICALLY THAT HAVE CHANGED THE FRAME SLIGHTLY ON THE 2009-2013 AND HAVE INCLUDING A PLASTIC SHIELD OF SORTS IN THE LOCATION OF MY HOLES. IT SEEMS TO ME THEY REALIZE THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT OWN UP TO IT LIKE THEY HAVE IN THE PAST WITH THE 98-2004 MODELS. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM AS THEIR ARE MANY OTHERS THAT ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION AS I AM IN RIGHT NOW. THE TRUCK LOOKS GREAT ON THE OUTSIDE BUT NOW IS A DEATH TRAP DUE TO THE FRAME. *TR

LAST MONTH I LOOKED UNDERNEATH MY TRUCK AND DISCOVERED SIGNIFICANT FRAME RUST. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AREAS ARE BETWEEN STEEL FRAME COMPONENTS THAT ARE RIVETED TOGETHER. RUST HAS FORMED BETWEEN THESE PLATES AND IS PUSHING THEM APART. THERE IS UP TO 3/8" DEFORMATION BETWEEN PLATES. THE PLATES WERE ORIGINALLY IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER. THE PLATES ARE STILL IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER AT RIVET POINTS. THE CONDITIONS OF THE CONCEALED PORTIONS OF THE RIVETS ARE UNKNOWN. THE RUST IS LOCATED PRIMARILY UNDER THE TRUCK BED, BUT THERE IS SOME UNDER THE PASSENGER CAB. AN INTERNET SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN MISTREATED AND HAS FOLLOWED ALL MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE. I AM ALSO AWARE OF THE 2001-2004 TACOMA FRAME RECALL. 2005 TACOMA FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO A HOLE IN THE FRAME FROM RUST. VEHICLE INSPECTED BY THE DEALER FROM WHICH IT WAS PURCHASED. HAD PURCHASED VEHICLE JUST LESS THAN ONE YEAR EARLIER, SECOND OWNER. NO ACCIDENTS AND WELL CARED FOR. IRONICALLY ENOUGH, WE BOUGHT THIS TACOMA TO REPLACE THE 1998 TACOMA WE LOST DUE TO A FRAME RUST PROBLEM IN THE TOYOTA BUYBACK PROGRAM. DEALER DID FIX AT NO COST UNDER USED CAR WARRANTY. REPORTED ISSUE TO THE TOYOTA USED CAR SALESMAN WHO SOLD US THE TRUCK AND HE STATED HE WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY FRAME RUST ISSUES ON 2005 TACOMAS. AFTER A CURSORY INVESTIGATION I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE. APPARENTLY TOYOTA HAS NOT THOROUGHLY ADDRESSED FRAME RUST ISSUES THAT PLAGUED EARLIER MODELS. WENT TO DRIVE HOME FROM WORK AND SAFETY BELT ON RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SIDE PULLED ALL THE WAY OUT, WILL NOT RETRACT. HAVE HAD MANY ISSUES WITH THE SAFETY BELTS SINCE BUYING THE TRUCK, SUCH AS FOLDING UP, NOT RETRACTING ALL THE WAY, GETTING CAUGHT, BUT NONE AS BAD AS THE CURRENT ISSUE. RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA REGARDING THE SEAT BELTS IN THIS ACCESS CAB MODEL, BUT WAS INFORMED TODAY BY THE DEALER IN PLACERVILLE THAT THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE SEATBELTS ON THESE ACCESS CAB MODELS ARE AFFECTED BY THE OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE REAR DOORS, AND HAVE A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW. WHILE DRIVING I NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD STICK WHEN ROUNDING A CURVE. THEN IT WOULD BE OK . AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION AND ABOUT 200 MORE MILES THE STEERING WHEEL HAD A LOT OF PLAY IN IT MOVING FROM SIDE TO SIDE WITHOUT MOVING THE TIRES. FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWED THE UNIVERSAL JOINT FOR THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT HAD NO BEARINGS LEFT IN IT. SCARY.. *TR
LAST FALL, I WAS ADVISED BY A PRIVATE GARAGE THAT MY 2005 TACOMA HAD EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST. I BROUGHT IT TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND I SHOULD NOT DRIVE IT UNTIL THE FRAME WAS REPAIRED. I OPENED A CASE WITH TOYOTA AND HAVE HEARD NOTHING. I WROTE LETTERS TO THE GM AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN LAKEWOOD, NJ AND THE REGIONAL MANAGER IN NJ, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE GONE UNANSWERED. I CANNOT SELL THE VEHICLE NOR TRADE IT IN THE SHAPE IT IS IN, NOR SHOULD I BE USING IT (ALTHOUGH I MUST). THERE IS A HOLE IN THE BOXED PART OF THE FRAME THAT IS ABOUT 8" LONG AND 2-3" HIGH. THERE MAY BE MORE BY NOW. THE RUST HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT IT IS STAINING MY DRIVEWAY, WHICH IS BLACKTOPPED! I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF TOYOTA'S REPUTATION. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013: WHILE MANEUVERING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, AND THROUGH THE 90 DEGREE TURNS OUT OF A SUBURB IN WASHINGTON STATE ON THE WAY TO I-5 NORTHBOUND, THE STEERING OF MY WELL-MAINTAINED 6 SPEED MANUAL 2005 ACCESS CAB TOYOTA TACOMA TRD 4WD FELT ALTERNATELY STIFF AND LOOSE, AS THOUGH THE WHEEL WAS RATCHETING. THE WHEEL FAILED TO RETURN TO CENTER, REQUIRING CONSTANT EFFORT THROUGH ALL POINTS OF STEERING, WITH SPECIAL CARE REQUIRED TO OVERCOME THE HIGH AND LOW PEAKS IN RESISTANCE. NEGOTIATING TURNS HAS BECOME AN IMPRECISE, PHYSICALLY DEMANDING AND THEREFORE UNSAFE EXERCISE. WHILE I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE, AT MY OWN EXPENSE, THE ISSUE SEEMS TO BE A COMMON COMPLAINT ON THE WWW.ARFC.ORG WEBSITE, AND IS LIKELY ASSOCIATED WITH A FAULTY UNIVERSAL JOINT IN THE STEERING ASSEMBLY. THIS PROBLEM SOUNDS TO ME EVERY BIT AS SERIOUS AS THE GAS PEDAL/FLOOR MAT INTERFERENCE RECALL FOR WHICH I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN RECENT YEARS. THIS IS A LOSS-OF-CONTROL HAZARD THAT NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION, AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA DIRECTLY AS A SAFETY RECALL. I WAS TRAVELING DOWN AN INTERSTATE WHEN A REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. THE TIRE IS A TOYO CROSS COUNTRY A/T. HE TIRE SEPARATED COMPLETELY LEAVING THE SIDEWALLS ON THE RIM AND THE TREAD & BELTS & REST OF THE TIRE TORE OFF IN ONE PIECE. LUCKILY, THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT/ INJURY. IN AUGUST 2013 WHILE I WAS LIVING IN MEXICO TAKING CARE OF MY ELDERLY FATHER MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA AY 67K MILES STARTED HAVING NOISES IN THE SUSPENSION AREA . WHILE I AM NOT A MECHANIC I WAS REFERRED TO A MAN NAMED ADRIAN WHO SPECIALIZED IN SUSPENSIONS AND BRAKES . HE DROVE MY TACOMA AND DISCOVERED THE NOISE WAS CAUSED BY CRACKED LEAF SPRINGS ON THE REAR OF MY TRUCK , I TOO WAS UNDER THE TRUCK AND SAW THE CRACKS AND BREAKAGE . I CONTACTED TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER CARE AND WAS BASICALLY TOLD " YOUR TRUCK IN NOT UNDER WARRANTY SO YOU WILL HAVE TO FIX THE TRUCK YOUR SELF ". I DROVE MY OTHER VEHICLE AS THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE VEHICLE WAS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AS IT WAS . I ORDERED SOME NEW LEAF SPRINGS AND HAD THEM SHIPPED FROM SUMMIT RACING , THEY WERE THE FEW SHOPS TO OFFER INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING . WHEN THE PARTS CAME IN I HAD MY MECHANIC INSTALL THEM FOR A VERY REASONABLE $120 USD . I SAW THAT THERE WERE MANY OWNERS OF TRUCKS LIKE MINE THAT HAS SIMILAR PART FAILURE SO KNEW THE PROBLEM WAS MORE THAN TOYOTA WAS TELLING AND THEY WERE STILL NOT ADMITTING THERE WAS A PROBLEM. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA AND SEEING THAN NEARLY 700,000 VEHICLE LIKE MINE WERE AFFECTED . I HAD ALREADY REPAIRED THE VEHICLE AS I NEEDED TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT AND THOUGHT THERE MIGHT BE IN THE FUTURE SOME REIMBURSEMENT . I HAVE NOW WAITED OVER TWO YEARS FOR A REIMBURSEMENT FROM TOYOTA AND THEY KEEP ASKING FOR A WRITTEN STATEMENT THAT THE BROKEN LEAF SPRINGS "WERE NOT FROM SOME OTHER EXTERNAL FORCES" AND I KEEP GETTING THE RUN AROUND FROM TOYOTA'S IRRITATING CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE . I STILL OWN THE TRUCK , STILL OUT THE $722.97 ,AND STILL EXASPERATED THAT TOYOTA WOULD BE SO UNREASONABLE WITH A CUSTOMER . CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME IN THEIS REGARD TO RECOMMEND SOME AGENCY TO HELP SOLVE THIS ?
